4-0 out of 5 stars Every Little Bit Helps!
Elephant, Mouse, and all their friends work together and have fun. "Just a Little Bit" is a sweet story about friendship and teaches us all a great lesson. As it was inscribed to me by my friend, "Keep this book on hand to remind you at times when you may be tempted to give up on something, that it may just be that next little bit of effort, that little extra push that makes a world of difference." This book made me smile and I loved the illustrations too! ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Great for the Music Classroom
What a wonderfully easy book to read/sing with your students. This song also has a hand jive to go with it, but it is not located in the book. The melody isn't located there as well. A quick search on the internet will clue you in on both of those. A great book to read/sing with your students in the regular classroom or in the music classroom. I highly recommend.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great for toddlers too!
My daughter is 2 years old and enjoys the rhymes in this book. She has started to repeat some of them. Wonderful illustrations.

5-0 out of 5 stars It's what you remember...and a whole lot more!
I use this in the music classes that I teach. The kids love the part that everyone knows, but the authors have taken it a few steps further by adding additional verses. The verses are charming and make a great addition to this already established children's classic. The illustrations are hysterical and subtle. Make sure that you take time to examine them closely!

4-0 out of 5 stars Remember That Old Game?
I used to love playing the Miss Mary Mack hand clapping game with my little girlfriends, so when I found this book adaptation, I just had to have it.

I was definitely not disappointed. The illustrations are wonderful, and it just brings back so many childhood memories. I love that I'm going to be able to share that remembered fun with my child.

5-0 out of 5 stars A heart rending story....capable of bringing out so much....
I read this book with my 9 year old daughter....and we both cried....tears dried up but the pain lingered....
Why, oh why, did these animals have to suffer so much, they had'nt wronged anyone, they were not at war with anyone, papa? They needed to be looked after by humans, who had bought them here against their will, and those humans decided their fate with death? Why could'nt they be let loose in a jungle?
My daughter consulted an atlas, looked at the map of Japan and asked why could'nt the animals be taken to some remote part of the country which was less likely to be effected by war? Why was not the enemy told to stay away from the zoo which housed so many helpless and innocent animals, and for this the zoo could have been highlighted by placing lights or lighting fires all around it's boundary? Why did'nt mother nature come to their rescue? What must the animals have thought....their caretakers have become their killers....how betrayed and grief-stricken they must have felt? If the effects of war are so bad and sad, why is war not banned? I could feel her sadness....her turmoil...her helplessness. She was trying to find a way so that such things are not repeated, wars are stopped, and she came out with her own solution....she decided to type the whole story, word by word, and send it over email to all her friends and all email addresses that she could get hold of!! She also decided to set up a table beside her school gate, with this book on it, and request all visitors who came to attend the pet show being organised by her school on 4th Oct'02,which is the World Animal Welfare Day, to go through this book!
The questions she asked me were many....and many may have remained unasked in that young mind....I could feel her questioning justice, engaging her imagination and creativity to find alternative solutions, overflowing with compassion and empathy, maybe wondering about the indifference of mother nature, seeing the insanity and ravages of war, setting up of small but noble goals for herself....
This book conveys and wakens up more than just the futility and pain of war. Anti-war seeds have to be sown in an individual as she is the basic unit of society, changes there will ultimately change the society, and this has to be done at an early age. By what I saw in my daughter, the feelings this book evoked in her, I very very strongly recommend this book for everyone at every place.

5-0 out of 5 stars Good or bad
The first time I read this was when I started studying Japan. This book tells about possible things that could happen in matters of war.I read this book almost every day.Although it's sad I can finnish the book. But I can never finish the book without tears in my eyes. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Babar and the Ghost
In this book, Babar and his family go to the haunted Black Castle for a picnic. But while they are there it starts to rain, so they have to go inside and wait for it to stop. As they were waiting, the children went and roamed around. While they were roaming around the castle, they ran into a ghost. At first they were scared, but the ghost told them he was a good ghost. So he went home with them, but when Babar found out that the children had a ghost there, he sent the ghost straight home. The children were sad, but they knew that they could go and visit the ghost any time.
I liked this book as a child because I always thought that stuff with ghosts, haunted houses and stuff like that were interesting. My favorite character in this book was Zepher the monkey, he was kind of funny. So if you think you are interested in this kind of story, you should read it.

5-0 out of 5 stars My daughter loves this book
The Babar series is just wonderful for beginning readers. There are many qualities that parents will like- the cultural aspects, messages about responsibility, family, and community, as well as engaging, but not-too-complex plots for youngsters. My daughter particularly likes this one- it has just enough mystery and intrigue to interest her without confusing her. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Wow - A Beautiful Treasure of a Book
This book about a little boy who befriends the grouchy imperial elephant is one of the best children's stories I have ever read. The story line is simple, yet conveys a lot of messages, i.e. how Sing Lo develops empathy for the elephant's situation, how giving can be more fulfilling than receiving, how we all go to sleep more easily when we are well taken care of, etc. What a wonderfully rich book!
The illustrations in this book are absolutely exquisit. You just don't get tired at looking at them.
I have read this book many times to my sons. However, when this book was read to a group of us by another adult, I discovered so many new things I had not seen before. This is a must have for every child's library.

5-0 out of 5 stars RELEVANT YESTERDAY AND TODAY
Sun washed yet brilliant the unique illustrations of South African artist Jude Daly enhance this story of how a young boy learns to be helpful.

Sing Lo is the son of one of the wealthiest merchants in Peking. He's a rather spoiled child who has been cosseted since birth. One day during an outing in his rickshaw Sing Lo becomes bored, and asks his driver, Li, what might be the greatest sight of all. Upon learning that this extraordinary sight might be the Imperial Elephant, Sing Lo determines that is precisely what he wishes to see.

Cautioned by Li that the animal is reputed to be bad tempered since the death of the Emperor, Sing Lo decides to take him a gift of buns "glazed with honey and sprinkled with poppy seeds." When Sing Lo delivers them he learns that the elephant hasn't slept since the Emperor died.

What can Sing Lo possibly do to bring rest to the unhappy animal, and is he willing to expend time and energy to bring comfort to another?

This story, which is based on a bedtime tale told to the author by her father, is as relevant today as it was years ago.

5-0 out of 5 stars A magnificant children's story
My daughter received this beautiful book as a gift and we enjoy reading it again and again.
The story tells of a wealthy, sometimes seemingly selfish, young boy who rather unselfishly reaches out to the emporer's elephant who has not slept since the death of his beloved master. The little boy reacts lovingly and works diligently to ensure care and rest for the sad animal.
The art is bold and each page is a museum-goer's dream. The pictures jump off of the pages and work exquisitely with the text.
I cannot do this book justice, I know. Just find and read it to your children! ... Read more

A Babar classicnow back in print!

First published in 1967, this classic Babar is available in a new format.

Everything looks great for Babar and his family's trip to Paris-until his luggage gets mixed up with another passenger's at the train station-and Babar loses his crown! The search is on for the mysterious "Moustache Man" who has carried off the crown, and Babar becomes more and more concerned as the time approaches for his evening out on the town, where he'll be mortified to show up without it.

A fun mystery in which children can empathize with poor Babar, who must appear in public without everything "just so". AUTHOR BIO: Laurent de Brunhoff has been illustrating the Babar books since 1946, after his father, Jean de Brunhoff, illustrated the first titles a decade before. He has created more than 30 books about the world-renowned elephant and his family, most recently the best-selling Babar's Museum of Art and Babar's Yoga for Elephants.

Learn to count from 1 to 20 with the King of Elephants!

Babar, the beloved, best-selling elephant king, is back--and he's ready to help young readers master counting from 1 to 20. Ever the good father (and the good teacher), he lets his children, Pom, Flora, and Alexander master 1 to 10 on their own. During a walk with Zephir the monkey, they spy one maribou bird, two hot-air balloons in the sky, three race cars...

Then Babar personally teaches his children--and his young readers--to count to 20. At the end of the book, there is a special reward--a Royal Certificate that affirms the new skill: "I, Babar, King of the Elephants, do hereby proclaim that you have learned to count to 20."

Babar's Counting Book, first published in 1986, continues to delight youngsters--and to show them that numbers are all around them. ... Read more

Book Description

When Grandpa goes traveling, he sends home postcards. But these are no ordinary postcards, and Grandpa is no ordinary man. At the turn of the century, Sir William Cornelius Van Horne was one of the most influential businessmen in North America. While in Europe in 1909, retired railroad president William Cornelius Van Horne sent hand-drawn postcards to his grandson in Montreal. He loved to draw elephants: elephants standing at the rail of an ocean liner, elephants smoking cigars on trains, and of course, elephants with their “trunks all aboard.”

Author Barbara Nichol was inspired by this collection of elephantine epistles and has written the whimsical and fanciful verse that captures the turn-of-century spirit of Van Horne’s creations.

If you know Flora McDonnell's award-winning work through Flora McDonnell's ABC, I Love Boats, or I Love Animals, then you're already familiar with her bright, uncluttered, kid-friendly illustrations. Splash begins with two Indian elephants on a sun-soaked yellow background. "Hot, hot, hot!The elephants are hot!" the first page pronounces in large type. And indeed, the overheated elephants look down in the mouth, as do the panting tiger and the pained rhinoceros on the following pages. Relief comes when the baby leads its mother--and presumably the other animals--down to the water. The cool blue rushes to fill the pages, as the elephants squirt and splash, and the rhinoceros goes "Splosh."Refreshed and happy at last, the animals have the baby elephant to thank for the excellent idea--"What a happy, cool, clever little baby elephant!" This simple, winning picture book captures the pure exaltation of a run through the sprinkler on a hot, hot day. (Baby to preschool) ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Captivating and Unique
a lovely baby's introduction to Indian wildlife. There is so much infant literature already out there depicting the African savannah, this is a nice change. The illustrations are absolutely stunning--one feels the largeness of the elephants, the heat, the coolness of the water. The text is sparse, simple and energetic and keeps baby's interest. My 8 month old loves this book.

4-0 out of 5 stars A consistent pleaser
My son was given this book for his first birthday and it's been a consistent favorite since. The text is extremely simple and repetitive which I think is good for very young readers. I am sure this book is one of the reasons that "hot" was one of his first words. However, I think the main reason that he likes it is because we both bang the pages hard as I say "splash!" and likewise act out "whoosh sploosh" and "squirt squirt". For this reason our copy is looking pretty battered by now - but we've had a lot of fun along the way!

5-0 out of 5 stars A masterful presentation
Big, bold, and bright are words that describe McDonnell's expressive illustrations. Warm yellows and then cooler blue undertones subtly reinforce the heat, and subsequent refreshment you can almost feel along with the sweltering jungle animals who find a fun way to cool down on a hot, hot day-a rich accompaniment to the slim, streamlined, straightforward text. Well done!

5-0 out of 5 stars Great elephant book for little kids!!
The little elephant is hot and leads the other animals to the water for a drink and a splash. The pictures are beautiful and the words are simple and catchy. My 3 year old loves this book - and knows the entire story. Great book to initiate conversations about how to cool off during the hot summer, as well as talking about animal behaviors.

McDonnell's paintings are gorgeous, there's no two ways about it. That and the simple but exuberent plot make for a winner of a picture book for toddlers. ... Read more
