In 1997, a 9-year-old nomadic reindeer herder came across a pair ofwoolly mammoth tusks buried in the frozen tundra of Siberia. Knowing that theivory in these tusks was worth a lot of money, young Simion Jarkov and hisbrother Gennadi removed the tusks and set out to sell them. But when a Frenchexplorer named Bernard Buigues heard about the discovery, he started wonderingif the entire mammoth carcass could be removed intact from the permafrost. Thusbegan the first recovery of a complete adult woolly mammoth.

Presented partially in diary form, Woolly Mammoth tells the fascinatingstory of the excavation of the Jarkov mammoth. Readers will also learn whatmammoths looked like, where they lived, what they ate, how they spent theirdays, and try to guess how they became extinct. Intriguing illustrations give asense of life hundreds of thousands of years ago, while photographs reveal thethrill of discovery and the scientific unraveling of the mystery surroundingthese ancient beasts. Young readers will even be given an opportunity to ponderthe ethics of DNA cloning. Windsor Chorlton's writing reflects the excitement ofthe scientists--and the world--even as he provides tons of basic (thoughremarkable) information. (Ages 9 and older) --Emilie Coulter ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Woolly Mammoth
I read Woolly Mammoth.
I though it was interesting because it tells you how they found it.
It talked about how they found and got the mammoths out of the middle of nowhere.
I think kids in grade 4 would enjoy this book.
I recommend this book because it is really interesting.

5-0 out of 5 stars Dig Deep Into the Past
This book is an excellent resource for the classroom
teacher of upper elementary students. Not only are there
numerous interesting & little known facts about the various
types of Mammoths, but one of the participants in the recent
Zarkov excavation shares every facet of the two-year
expedition to unearth a Mammoth that has been preserved for
23,000 years! The photos in this book are excellent, and it
serves as a companion to the Discovery video "Raising the
Mammoth." My fifth graders actually loved this documentary,
and were delighted that the book includes much of the same
information along with bits of trivia about these mysterious
creatures. My students are constantly passing this book
around to share with each other. This is AMAZING because they
don't like to read! I highly recommend this book for its
educational value. You won't be disappointed!

5-0 out of 5 stars Engaging Reading
During the summer of 1997 a young boy discovered mammoth tusks sticking out of the tundra in Siberia. This book documents the efforts of a team of scientists from around the world to remove the mammoth from the permafrost. Information about the behavior, migration, and extinction of mammoths is included. Photographs from the expedition, diagrams, and maps round out the text. The text also raises the question of whether or not it would be ethical to clone mammoths if it became scientifically possible. The ultimate answer is left to the student. This book would be a great addition to any middle school library. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars A Joyful Sillyness
Beware, you will need to pre-read this book to yourself before reading it aloud to a child! My preschool class has chosen this book once or twice a day since I brought it in. They wait eagerly for me to read the name of each new silly animal, laughing joyfully each time they hear about the "whoppabigamouse," "gulpawobbletusk," or the "snarlyhissopus." The pictures are delightful and colorful, and not at all scary. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars A wonderful book!
Even though this book is really written for older children, my 17-month-old son loves it too! We don't read the words to him, but he loves to look at the pictures and make elephant sounds. As he gets older, I'm sure he'll appreciate the information more, and my husband and I find it very interesting too.

The book is very well written and the pictures are great. I highly recommend it for all ages, especially if you have an elephant fan of your own at home!

5-0 out of 5 stars About a baby elephant born in the Woodland Park Zoo

5-0 out of 5 stars Propriety through pachyderm party participation!
Another delightful book by Sonia Levitin. This one is on party etiquette for young kids. Fun and silly illustrations get the point across as elephant gets ready to go to her first party.

The book starts with elephant's friend asking if she can bring a guest to Brenda's birthday party. When she gets the okay the preparations begin! Next there are many questions and answer opportunities regarding the proper attire to wear and what sort of gift to bring.

Some of the topics discussed include: How to get ready for the party and what type of manners you should exhibit when you bring a guest (stay close, introduce your friend and say something pleasant about your friend) and tongue-in-cheek discussions of how you should behave when introduced to the adults, if you break something, swing on the drapes and other wild animal behavior!

Taking turns, sharing, not being greedy, leaving pets alone, not snooping, washing hands after you use the toilet and saying Thank You are some of the other important points covered. The book even discusses that your gift stays with the birthday person!

The illustrations of elephant are charming with her apprehensive and excited looks -- and her pink bow worn especially for the party. A great read for small kids. Teaches manners and what to expect at a party.

5-0 out of 5 stars Lessons in manners disguised as a humorous story.
Young children will delight in the story of elephant's first invitation to a party and they will also learn social graces and etiquette along the way. In your face illustrations are as big as the party-going Pachyderm and will have your children squealing with joy at her preparations. A clever story that will hold your child's attention and pass on a few social graces at the same time.

5-0 out of 5 stars A delightful choice for reading with kids
Jeff Seaver illustrates When Elephant Goes To A Party, an intriguing picturebook story which invites young readers to take an interactive role in deciding what kind of gift Elephant should bring to a birthday party, and how to be a good guest. Parents will find When Elephant Goes To A Party a delightful choice for reading with kids: it's fun and packed with gentle reminders to kids on how to prepare for a social event. ... Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars The hurried elephant child
This book succeeds in presenting a message to parents if they read it to their young child. 5-0 out of 5 stars bernard's bath
My son is two years old and he loves this book. I had to read it to him four times the first night we had the book. The illustrations are fun and it is very easy to read. Plus the fact that bernard and his family are elephants doesn't hurt. ... Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars Psychedelic illustrations!
My son loves this book (and all lift-the-flap books) but the illustrations are a little too psychedelic for my taste. Great use of color, but there are a lot of other books he and I both reach for before this one.

5-0 out of 5 stars This is my 1 year old's favorite book
My 1 year old son got this for his birthday and loved from the first time I read it. He loves "peeking" under the flaps and finding the different animals. The bright colors are wonderful, and this is a nice change from the Board type books we usually read. You can use many voices for the different animals and he has learned the animal sounds from reading this book. It is fabulous and I am going to buy the other ones in the series.

5-0 out of 5 stars The only book our 10-month old sits still for!
He gets bored with regular old board books, but this one really captures his attention (he'll sit through it 2-3 times in a row!) There are many different animals, so you can use a lot of different voices. Cute illustrations.

5-0 out of 5 stars Fun and engaging
We've been reading this to our now one-year old for several months. He loves opening the flaps and seeing the animals behind them.

A real favorite for him and us. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Too good to be a book!!
This book is GREAT!! Saving Lilly is an excellent book for animal lovers. It is about a girl named Erin who wants to save all circus animals including an Asian Elephant called Lilly, from harsh whips, little food, and dirty cages. Erin and her entire class work very hard to help them. I love this book because it shows that when something bad is happening, and you don't like it, you complain about it instead of taking action! Somtimes in this book I felt like cheering on for Erin's class! This book has a great way of "hooking" you in.

5-0 out of 5 stars An awesome story for animal lovers!
This is one of the best books i've personally ever read. it's about two kids, Erin and David, who for TAG do research about lives of circus animals. They find a lot of them are cruelly treated. Their TAG teacher then plans a class trip to the circus. Erin and David find the circus their going to is one of the worst abusers of all! Then their teacher says they have to go. If you wanna know the ending, you gotta read the book. I recommend this book to everybody!
