Book Description

At the seashore . . .

High tide rushes in to fill a sandy basin with water. At first glance, it may seem like an ordinary puddle. But look again. Do you spy the ochre sea star or the tentacles of the giant green anemones? Look even closer. Now can you see the hermit crabs and turban snails, the barnacles and periwinkles?

In lyrical prose, Barbara Brenner reveals the fascinating happenings in one small place. She explains the recurring formation of tide pools and the remarkable interdependence of their creatures. Tom Leonard’s brilliant illustrations take you underwater to a secret world. His detailed, lifelike depictions of sculpins and mussels, algae and seaweed, show the splendor that dwells in the most unexpected places.

So stop. Observe. Explore your natural world. If you look closely enough, you will surely find . . . one small place that is home for many things.

Superb illustrations, attention to detail, and one of the most charismatic and appealing mammals around combine to make Giant Pandas a sure hit, with its fascinating account of the natural history and behavior of the giant panda. Gail Gibbons' beautiful illustrations transport the reader to the rugged mountains of northern China that giant pandas call home. One third grader wrote: "I would read this book over and over and it would NEVER get boring. This book is a wonderful way to learn." The conservation message that is woven throughout the book provides a realistic though hopeful conclusion to a book that will enthrall children and parents. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars An excellent introductions to wetland habitats
Once again, Gail Gibbons has done a wonderful job introducing 4 to 8 year olds to another natural realm. In Marshes and Swamps, Ms. Gibbons writes and shows through her illustrations where both freshwater and saltwater wetlands are found, how they developed and are maintained, the plants, animals, invertebrates, plants and insects who live there, and why they are threatened by humans. The book explains a bit about freshwater marshes, saltwater marshes, freshwater swamps, and mangrove swamps. Marshes and Swamps can launch a great classroom unit on the importance of wetlands to migratory birds, on food chains, on pollution and its impact on the environment, on the different adaptations of plants and animals to wet/brackish/salty environs. I am using this book with my third grade classroom and it is so full of information that we will use it for a month. Wading Into Wetlands, by the National Wildlife Federation is a great companion book of hands on activities that enhance the Gail Gibbons Marshes and Swamps book. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars This book is better than a one-star!
A very quick read, granted, but the illustrations are beautiful. This is the kind of book youngsters will want to look at again and again. I haven't compared it to Yolen's other books, so maybe I would give it less, but for now it deserves a 4.

1-0 out of 5 stars "Welcome to the Ice House" by Jane Yolen
Owning wonderful "Alphabeastiary" and "Owl Moon" by Yolen mistakenly led us to this book. Text is barely verbal and vacant, certainly not any great addition to our science collection, as Booklist review tends to indicate. Splitting a sentence between four pages is not our idea of reading. Any parents who are reading for literary enhancement should find something else. The star we give is for illustrations, nothing more. The illustrator should have put as much effort into the interior as she did the cover. Too bad, overall disappointment. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Parents and Children BOTH Read
This is one of the books in the We Both read series which is a wonderful series that encourages parents and children to read together. The pages on the left side are for the parents to read. The pages on the right are for the children. This book tells a little bit about all 4 seasons. The information on the parents side is wonderful. The information on the children's side is a little more simplistic. ("It is windy in the fall.")There is some very good basic information about seasons in this book but I felt they tried to make this book a little too long (40 pages) and therefore tried to stretch too much on the childrens pages. I would recommend this series of books to parents who like to read with their children for K-1st grade readers. ... Read more
