3-0 out of 5 stars The Boy
BOY
BY: Roald Dahl

This book is an autobiography about the author's life.

In addition to his mother and father, Roald had five siblings, two brothers and three sisters. His father became wealthy selling ship supplies. He died when Roald was a baby.

Roald went to a preschool and kindergarten close to his home. The headmaster beat him with a cane after he and two classmates played a prank at a candy store. After this event, his mother was determined to send him to an English boarding school because his father had always believed that English schools provided the best education.

Roald had a difficult time at the boarding school because he was sent there at such an early age. One time he broke his pencil while taking a test and asked to borrow one from a classmate. He was accused of cheating and was beaten by the headmaster. Another time, he was so homesick he faked being ill. His mother came and took him to the doctor. The doctor advised him not to pretend to be ill and to return to school. The doctor never told Roald's mother that he was pretending to be sick.

One of the highlights of his stay at boarding school was that the Cadbury Candy Company sent samples of new candies they were testing. The students had to fill out a survey to tell the company which candies they liked best. Also, he learned photography and took pictures for the school. He even had his own darkroom.

Roald's boarding school experience was difficult but he learned to be a great writer of children's books as a result of the education he received.

The book was well written and easy to read with some exciting parts. It was not a book I enjoyed a whole lot. I really don't like autobiographies and it was hard for me to identify with the characters.

4-0 out of 5 stars A Good Read
BOY was a good read because I never got bored with reading it. Scenes such as the adenoid removal, his sister's operation when the Boy smelled the sweet smell of the chloroform, the mouse in the candy jar, the goat droppings in the pipe, the canings, were all full of detail and interest. I didn't expect Dahl to have such vivid, sour memories of his childhood. He suffered beatings and pain at his boarding schools, and this must have had a huge effect on his life or he wouldn't have mentioned the canings in such detail. The headmasters were mean old farts, who seemed to enjoy beating boys; they would smile and laugh and take their time about the punishment, most of which ended in a caning. Some parents might not like their children reading this book because of some of the gruesome scenes, which might affect their children's mental state. But it's the truth, and the truth hurts sometimes. Dahl makes fun of everything, especially stupid old adults, who cause all the problems in the world.

2-0 out of 5 stars Boy by Roald Dahl
Boy, by Roald Dahl, takes place in Norway, England, and Wales. His family lives in Wales and vacations in, his parents' former home, Norway. When Dahl was a kid, he was schooled in England. An important person is his beloved mother who raised him, and his sibling, single-handedly. Dahl's siblings were also important to him. Important childhood events are: when he dropped a dead mouse into a sweet shop jar owned by an evil woman; getting bullied by Boazers, which are like school prefect if you didn't know what a Boazer is; getting his adenoids removed; getting a job in Africa as a young man; and almost having his nose cut off in a car accident.
Our opoinion is Boy by Roald Dahl is boring, if you're like us, who like fiction books; it's an autobiography. It was also very boring because, he gave small details, and not all of our questions were answered. But, if you like non-fiction books, you'll probably like Boy.

5-0 out of 5 stars BOY by Roald Dahl
BOY is the most incredible book you could ever READ!!!If you haven`t read this book, then you don`t know very much about Roald Dahl,do you?BOY is about Roald Dahl as a child with his Papa and Mama, his brothers and sisters:Alfrild,Ellen,Elsa,Astin, and Radyr. It starts from the time he was born to the time he left school. There are some gross parts in this book but I can assure you that there are many, many silly parts in this book.I hope you will read and enjoy this book because it is an awesome book and you will enjoy this wonderful book,Boy.

5-0 out of 5 stars Terrific!
Usually, if an author writes really hilarious and original books, you don't expect their life to be just as great. And Roald Dahl's life isn't that way- his life is way more exciting!

When I first read this book, I couldn't believe that anyone's childhood could be that interesting. By the end, you'll believe... from The Great Mouse Plot to putting goat droppings in a pipe and smoking it,there's never a dull moment. A fantastic thing for a kid to discover, and for all who are a true kid at heart. ... Read more

Katie and the Mona Lisa is a truly excellent book. My 4 yr old daughter likes to both draw and read. This is ideal for our bedtime reading -- it engages her, helping to her develop her imagination and learn a bit about art. I'm looking forward to going to an art museum, where I intend to ask my daughter which painting she'd like to crawl into! I also can't wait to buy the others in the series. Honestly!

5-0 out of 5 stars Meet the Masters of the Italian Renissance
Katie is back visiting her favorite place, the art museum, with her Grandma. On this outing she stands in front of the picture of the Mona Lisa. "I wish I knew what is making you smile", she wonders. And with that, the Mona Lisa invites her into the painting. Katie steps over the frame and enters the world of the Italian Renaissance..... James Mayhew, author of Katie Meets the Impressionists, has written and illustrated another wonderfully inventive story, full of witty text and expressive artwork, that will transport youngsters back in time and send them on a very creative adventure. Poor Mona Lisa is sad and lonely, sitting in that chair without visitors for hundreds of years. So, Katie takes her "out" to meet new friends...They visit St. George from Raphael's St. George and the Dragon, dance with the beautiful women in Botticelli's Primavera and fly to Venice on Carpaccio's The Lion of St. Mark, causing a little trouble and leaving a bit of chaos in their wake. But fortunately, all is sorted out and put right in the end by the angel from da Vinci student's An Angel With a Lute. Katie and the Mona Lisa is an amusing and inspired story that will captivate children 4-8 with its magic and offers a terrific and imaginative introduction to the paintings of the Italian Renaissance.

5-0 out of 5 stars A Captivating Introduction to Fine Art
I bought this book for my two year old daughter, and she loves it! The story itself is charming. As "Katie" steps into and out of various paintings in the art museum, she meets the people in the paintings. The author includes a little fact about each painting and/or artist within the text of the story. At the end of the story, the author gives more detailed information about every painting included in the book. The illustrations are also fabulous! Our whole family enjoys this book, and now our 2 year old recognizes the Mona Lisa when she sees "her." ... Read more

"I look up now into the oval mirror and see barely a trace of the mud-splattered girl tearing through the woodland on her horse, or the barefoot girl wading at Schonbrunn... I have become what Mama set out for me to be. Majestic. A Dauphine and eventually a Queen."

So writes the headstrong 13-year-old Maria Antonia--future Queen of France--in her diary on October 23, 1769. In this engrossing addition to the Royal Diaries series (Elizabeth I: Red Rose of the House of Tudor, Cleopatra VII: Daughter of the Nile), Kathryn Lasky invents a diary of the young Marie Antoinette in 1769--the year she is to be married off to Dauphin Louis Auguste, eldest grandson of the French king Louis XV. Arranged marriages were common in that day and age--as the Empress Theresa (of the Holy Roman Empire of the Germanic Nations) sought to consolidate power among nations by marrying off her children. Thus, the future of Austria and France falls upon Maria Antonia's young shoulders.

To prepare her for this awesome responsibility, she must be trained to write, read, speak French, dress, act... even breathe.Things get even more grim as she is shipped off to the court of Versailles and introduced to her puffy, awkward future husband and confronted with the court's ridiculous customs. Marie--an opinionated and insightful young woman--mocks the court of "impeccable etiquette and manners" that makes up nasty rhymes about those they hate, but panics when her hair is mussed. Lasky has done an excellent job of creating a very human character in the young Marie Antoinette--one whom young readers will want to learn more about. Fortunately, her story is given plenty of context with an epilogue describing the history of the young Queen after 1769, a historical note offering an 18th-century context, a Habsburg-Bourbon family tree, and various portraits of the royal family. 5-0 out of 5 stars A look at Marie Antoinette as a vulnerable young girl.
The year is 1769; the place, Austria. The pressure is on thirteen-year-old Maria Antonia, youngest daughter of the Empress Maria Theresa, to excell so that she will be chosen to marry the future king of France. Antonia, as she is called, must learn French language, fashions, customs, and etiquette so that she can impress the king's messengers. She is given no time to act her age; when she does attempt to enjoy life as a girl should, she is severely punished. When she is sent away to France, her life is little better - she makes enemies of the mistress of the current king, who is the grandfather of her husband-to-be. She is forced to observe customs she can barely keep straight. And she is having a hard time getting along with her fiance. I viewed Marie Antoinette differently after reading this book. It was obvious from the book and the afterword that Marie and her husband were not trained well by their parents and teachers on how to become good rulers, and Marie had been taught from the time she was young that the most important thing was to look good. This is most likely why they became such bad rulers and ended up losing their lives.

5-0 out of 5 stars The Last Dauphine of France
"Marie Antoinette, Princess of Versailles" is a wonderful edition of the Royal Diary Series. Kathryn Lasky went all out on research and detail.

Born Maria Antonia, Marie Antoniette was the daughter of the Empress Maria Theresa of Habsburg. This book recalls her years before and during the early parts of her marriage with the Dauphin, Louis Auguste (soon to be Louis XVI). She loses many friends on her journey to become the future Queen of France, not knowing she would be the last.

This time in her life, depicts Antonia's (affectionately named by her mother and austrian friends) childhood in a naive carefree way such as it is with many young rich royals. The fussing of her marriage to Louis Auguste. The politics and the resentment given to Madame Du Barry, mistress of Louise Auguste's grandfather, King Louis XV. Lasky tells all, the culture, the fashion, the politics, and the ridiculous etiquette of the court at Versailles.

Marie Antoniette could have been a spoiled child as many thought but she was all too naive about the realistic world. She could have very well turned into that rueful Queen because of the arstictocrats and hypocrites at Versailles. Even though the story has 'happy' beginning, Toinette (affectionately named by Louis Auguste) will lead a tragic life to uprise the revolution of France and to end the French Moncarchy.

5-0 out of 5 stars Patience and You Will Win
This is the 3rd book in the Young Royals series. This historical novel is based on Catherine of Aragon, Henry VIII's first wife. This opens in 1533, as Catherine refuses to release King Henry VIII from their marriage, renounce her title, or recognize Anne Boleyn as queen. She is imprisoned in a "moldering castle" and allowed no visitors and no contact with her daughter, Mary. This book shows Catherine reflecting on her experiences, beginning with her voyage to England at age 15 to marry Prince Arthur. Their marriage, in name only, lasted 6 months until his death in 1502. Over the next 7 years, Catherine lives with increasing poverty and decreasing prospects of marrying England's new crown prince, Henry. It shows how she hard her life was. It gives you new insight into her life. I think this book is better from 12 years and up.

5-0 out of 5 stars A wonderful addition to the Young Royals series.
Catherine of Aragon was a young Spanish princess known as Catalina when she left her home in the summer of 1501 to sail to England. Catherine had known since childhood that she was betrothed to Prince Arthur, heir to the throne of England, and that one day she would have to leave Spain to marry him. Now that she is fifteen, that day has come. Arriving in England, Catherine has hope for her future. Arthur appears kind, and it seems they will at least be friends. But due to Arthur's poor health, their marriage is in name only. And just six months after the wedding, Arthur suddenly dies. Now Catherine finds her once-certain future in question. As a woman she is utterly powerless to make decisions about her own life, and can only wait while those in power determine her fate. Will she be returned to Spain so that her parents can negotiate a new marriage for her elsewhere -- or will she be married to Arthur's younger brother Prince Henry, the new heir to the throne of England? Carolyn Meyer brought the world of Tudor England to life in this novel. Catherine is portrayed as a real young woman with hopes and dreams, making her ultimate fate seem all the more tragic. Readers who enjoyed the author's other books in the Young Royals series won't want to miss this one.

5-0 out of 5 stars Another great young royals book
In the 4th book of Carolyn Meyer's Young Royals series, we meet another one of the Tudor women, Catherine of Aragorn, Henry VII's first wife out of six. It is 1501, and young Catherine of Spain is betrothed to Arthur, the heir to England's throne. She begins by writing of a her journey to England. What was to be a great union of two powers was not to be as Catherine describes her utter loneliness in the English court. Arthur is very sickly and unable to perform the duties of a husband to Catherine. Six mothes after marriage, Arthur dies, and Catherine's fate is thrown up in the air as Spain and England dispute the outcome. There are rumors that she will return to Spain, and also rumors that she will marry Henry. Catherine's life is thrown into chaos for the next 7 years, and she lives through a time of poverty while the two kingdoms fight over her drowry. Through it all Catherine is determined to become Queen of England one day. During this time she comes into acquaintence with Henry, Arthur's younger brother. Catherine takes a liking to Henry and in the end, she does marry Henry and become England's Queen, though quickly the happiness fades. This was another wonderful book in the Young Royals series. Catherine painted a very vivid image of her life in the English court and her feelings toward Arthur and Henry. Fans should definitely also read Mary, Bloody Mary, about Catherine's daughter, and Doomed Queen Anne, about Anne Boleyn, the woman who ultimately stole Henry's heart from Catherine. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Based on a true story from J. S. Bach's childhood
Sallie Ketcham's wonderful "Bach's Big Adventure" is that rare breed of book which manages to tie together a true story from a major historical figure's childhood with terrific illustrations--and throw in a palatable moral as well.

J. S. Bach apparently was quite a confident young man, boasting by the age of ten to all who would listen that he and he alone was the greatest organist in all Germany. His confidence pierced by the sarcasm and truthfulness of his elder brother (who reared him once their parents had died), Bach decides that he will go to hear a concert by the man his brother says IS the greatest--an organist named Reincken.

Suffice it to say that Bach is humbled by the experience and almost hesitates to join Reincken at the organ--but the elder man is encouraging and soon the two are playing a rollicking tune, much to the delight of both. Reincken cheers the young Bach who does, in time, become the greatest organist in Germany and beyond.

Ketcham's tale is well told, with generous doses of humor. Timothy Bush's watercolor illustrations are cartoonlike and serve to further humanize this great musician. The book is a success and a treat to peruse.

4-0 out of 5 stars Great Story For the Right Age Group
Probably best suited for 5-8 year-olds. It's the story of young Johann Sebastian Bach and his desire to be the greatest organist in all of Germany and the world. Through very good illustrations, and a compelling story, children and adults will be fascinated by this prodigy. The author passes on interesting tidbits of information of Bach's childhood that make for very good reading. However, children younger than 5 will probably tire easily of this story, since it runs a bit long.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Book that You Can't Put Down
This book is well written. Children will want to read it again and again. The author's humor adds sparkle to this historically based novel. ... Read more

Book Description

Though born without great beauty, wealth, or title, Anne Boleyn blossomed into a captivating woman. She used her wiles to win the heart of England's most powerful man, King Henry VIII, and persuade him to defy everyone--including his own wife--to make her his new queen. But Anne's ambition was her fatal flaw. This is the true story of the girl everyone loved to hate.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Book!
This book unfolds the life of Anne Boleyn, a ill-favored girl that lived under the shadow of her sister throughout her childhood. Anne's sister, Mary Boleyn, was the prominent type beauty during the 16th century in England. Mary had been the mistress of King Henry VIII. However, as young Anne came to England from the French court as a stylish graceful lady, she soon caught the eye of King Henry. Anne Boleyn played her "games" upon the men in the English court and did all she could to win the heart of King Henry, the most powerful man in the nation. Anne's ambitions and strong will guided her through her struggling to be queen, the every peril in her life, and her uncertain path to power. Anne Boleyn was a mysterious yet prominent female figure of the Tudor family and her only daughter, Queen Elizabeth I, became on of the most prominent rulers in history. Though Anne Boleyn was executed when King Henry lost his interest in her, Anne's wits and determination led her to the fullfillment of her words to Mary, "One day, I shall be queen and you will kneel before me!"

5-0 out of 5 stars Oh, beware, Mistress Anne...
"Wait and see - someday I shall be queen of England, and you will kneel at my feet!" declares thirteen-year-old Anne Boleyn haughtily and angrily to her show-off of an older sister, Mary. A mole on her neck, a sixth finger, dark-haired, thin-framed, and pale - how could such an "ill-favored child" amount to anything, her parents wonder. Don't underestimate her, Boleyn family. She inherited her ambitious nature from you, and she'll do anything to prove herself. She'll win the heart of hot-blooded Henry VIII one way or another.
Oh, beware, Mistress Anne. You don't know what you're getting yourself into. Henry cast aside one wife for failing to get him a legitimate male heir. What makes you so sure you won't fail, as well? Keep prodding and tantalizing, and you will get yourself in deep trouble...
I highly recommend this one. The Tudor family has always fascinated me, especially Anne Boleyn and her daughter Elizabeth, and I love a good historical fiction romance! You'll love it, too!

5-0 out of 5 stars Wonderful but hard to understand
This was a very good book. I love history and Henry the
VIII so this was perfect. It was a little hard to understand. But other than that I loved it!!!

3-0 out of 5 stars ...
This book like the others in the young royal collection was very well written but I thought it lacked some of the qualities that made it great. I (as a Henry VIII buff) loved how she protrayed Mary in Mary, Bloody Mary and I thought she was fair to her character and didnt look over her faults. I dont believe she did this in Doomed Queen Anne. Anne Boylen had her faults and if you look at history I believe it is evident that she very power hungry, and in many intaces very cruel. I believe the author glossed over that part of her character to make her appear more likeable.

5-0 out of 5 stars I loved every page of this book!
I loved this book, from beginning to end. It was so cool to see all these events in history from Queen Anne's own viewpoint. I learned a lot about her and about her interesting life. I have read all the other books in the Young Royals Series and Carolyn Meyer is now my favorite author. I would recommend the whole series to everyone, but this book was my favorite in this series. It was so well-written. I just couldn't wait to find out what would happen next. I also didn't want the book to end. I'd give this book more than 5 five stars! ... Read more

Eleanor of Aquitaine, wife to two kings, mother to two others, has been waiting in Heaven a long time -- eight centuries, more or less -- to be reunited with her second husband, Henry II of England. Finally, the day has come when Henry will be judged for admission. While Eleanor, never a patient woman in life or afterlife, waits, three people, each of whom was close to Eleanor during a time of her life, join her. Their reminiscences do far more than help distract Eleanor -- they also paint a rich portrait of an extraordinary woman who was front and center in a remarkable period in history and whose accomplishments have had an important influence on society through the ages. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Magnificent intro to one of history's most powerful women
I first read this book at least 15 years ago and have never forgotten it. This book and The Daughter of Time launched my ongoing love affair with British history. After reading this book, I was so inspired that I dressed as Eleanor of Aquitaine for Halloween; I was shocked and astonished to discover that she was far from a household name and I spent my entire evening of trick-or-treating explaining my costume. If more books for children were as historically accurate and entertaining as is Proud Taste for Scarlet and Miniver, I think more people would have recognized and appreciated my costume. E.L. Konigsburg writes some of the best children's books I've ever read and they stand the test of time- I enjoy reading them now as much as I did then. By writing about an often ignored yet fascinating woman, Konisburg opened my eyes to a range of historical characters usually excluded in traditional history books. I highly recommend this book for any child, but especially for young girls who are looking for more female characters to shape their understanding of world history.

4-0 out of 5 stars A Proud Taste for Scarlet and Miniver
"...Louis was too thickheaded to use this valuable tool, this queen, this restless beauty, this Eleanor." So begins the wonderful saga of the spirited Eleanor of Aquitaine, her husbands, sons and daughters. From her marriage with Louis of France to that of King Henry II of England, Eleanor shows through wit and compassion, abruptness and anger, readers learn the unforgettable story of this heroine, and exactly why she has earned her place in history. Told from the view points of Abbot Suger of St. Denis, the Matilda Empress, and King Henry's most faithful knight, William the Marshall, A Proud Taste for Charlotte and Miniver is not a book to be forgotten

5-0 out of 5 stars Fantastic book about a prominent figure
A Proud Taste for Scarlet and Miniver is a wonderful book about the life of Eleanor of Aquitaine. This book shows all stages of her life: her childhood in France, her first marriage to Louis VII, her second marriage to Henry II, every important stage of Eleanor's life.

Eleanor and her fellow story-tellers Abbot Suger, Matilda-Empress, and William the Marshal are well-portrayed, as are the people who made an impact on Eleanor's life. Everything that happened to her is drawn in deftly to the story; you barely realise that you are actually waiting for Henry's judgement.

This is a great introduction to an important figure in French and English history. If you're looking for a light read or a brief glance into the time period Eleanor lived in, this is the perfect book. It is great for the youngest children to the most interested historian. This is a definitely something to check out as soon as you can!

4-0 out of 5 stars A Proud Taste for Scarlet and Miniver
In 'A Proud Taste for Scarlet and Miniver', a teen named Eleanor of Aquitaine is married to Prince Louis of France. They live happily until the crusade, where she disobeys her husband, now King, and is very unpleasant after that. So Eleanor leaves that marriage behind, and marries King Henry. She feels that she has never met a person so devious and sharp-witted like herself, and becomes very pleasurable around him. She gives birth to three sons and one daughter, but they all disagree with each other. And to make it worse, King Henry is becoming more and more angry at both his sons and Eleanor. SO she lives in Aquitaine. But what will he do to Eleanor? Read this book!

Im not sure that I liked this book, because it was pretty hard to follow. It was an interesting read, and I would reccomend it to people that like medieval tales, but NOT anything like science fiction, like me. Only if you like fantasy and are willing to cope with a broken-up story, from several characters' points of view. Read something else instead.

5-0 out of 5 stars Amazing book
I love Eleanor very much. She was beautiful both inside and outside. She loved poetry, music, and art. She was strong and always fought bravely. She was a pioneer feminist.
I love the beautiful illustrations by E.L.Konigsburg, too. Great! ... Read more

Book Description

The story of Mary Tudor's childhood is a classic fairy tale: A princess who is to
inherit the throne of England is separated from her mother; abused by an evil
stepmother who has enchanted her father; stripped of her title; and forced to
care for her baby stepsister, who inherits Mary's rights to the throne. Believe it
or not, it's all true.
Told in the voice of the young Mary, this novel explores the history and intrigue
of the dramatic rule of Henry VIII, his outrageous affair with and marriage to the
bewitching Anne Boleyn, and the consequences of that relationship for his
firstborn daughter. Carolyn Meyer has written a compassionate historical novel about love and loss, jealousy and fear--and a girl's struggle with forces far
beyond her control.

4-0 out of 5 stars Horrific truths, but accurately entertaining.
If you have read the Royal Diaries series you would know how cruel Mary was to Elizabeth. Everything has a reason. Mary's life was royal, but cruel, cold, and without comfort. Maybe this is what led her to her horrible ruling later on. Mary Tudor was the daughter of King Henry IV (the terror of his wives) and Catherine of Aragon who was daughter of Isabel and Ferdinand of Spain. The story starts out when Mary is betrothed by her father to a man she never wishes to marry. Soon afterwards, Henry the IV has a liking towards Anne Boleyn. The so called witch has plans to marry the king and give him a son. Catherine of Aragon becomes completely pushed out of Henry's life. Henry sent her away and she died with an unhappy life. Henry pays Mary and the death of her mother no mind however. He cancels the betrothal to Mary's consent. He is too bewitched by Anne and marries her immediately. She is sickingly sweet in front of her husband, but when he is gone she is as cold and hard as ice to Mary and makes her bow to her. Soon afterwards Anne is said to be pregnant. She continues on being cruel. After Anne gives birth she is in despair to know that her baby is a girl. Anne makes Mary take care of her baby and change her diaper. Henry however goes mad and if I continue I will give the story away so I will stop right here....................

5-0 out of 5 stars The Other Side of the Story
This is a first-person account of "Bloody Mary", Queen Elizabeth I's older half-sister. "Mary, Bloody Mary" is fun to read and very well-written. I especially like the parts when she is excluded from her father's love. It really makes you feel for Mary - especially because it's all true! Although I have always disliked Mary for her cruelty to Elizabeth, this book gave a sympathetic look at how Anne Boleyn (and eventually Elizabeth) took away Mary's rights. While I was reading this book I, too, started to feel sorry for Mary, but it ended too soon for me to really feel sorry for her. And the epilogue reminded me that no matter how rotten a deal Mary got because of Anne Boleyn, she had no right to be so mean to Elizabeth (and the countless other people she murdered - hence "Bloody Mary").

5-0 out of 5 stars A novel to remember.
Ah, history! My favorite subject, and an intriguing thing. Mary has been brought to life, both her worried, youthful side, and her detremined and stubborn side, the part of her that made her known as Mary, Bloody Mary, England's queen. This story, taking place in her youth, is well decribed with utmost accuracy. Depicting the eventful life of Mary Tudor, you will plummet into the sixteenth century, and into the heart of a princess. When I picked this book up, I wondered if it would be like a fairy tale, saying how wonderful and fruitful Mary's life was, and I was surprised when I read the story. Instead of boring literature, it shows the real life of Mary, her feelings about her father, his new wife, and Mary's own half sister, and how confused on the inside she is, but how brave she trys to act. Showing how a young girl is forced into womanhood, this is a novel to remember.

5-0 out of 5 stars Absolutely Amazing
"Mary Bloody Mary" is one of the best books I have ever read! This book is full of adventure and suspence!I would definitely recommend this book to anyone who enjoys a good book on history. This book is definitely one of a kind!!!!

4-0 out of 5 stars Good read for pre-teens and teens
Mary, Bloody Mary is the story of Mary Tudor's pre-teen and teenage years written for that age-group. Told from the first-person point of view, Mary tells of Anne Boylen's increasing power over the king, the casting-off of Mary and her mother, the birth and care of Elizabeth and Anne's eventual downfall. The book ends with the marriage of Henry to Jane Seymour, making "Mary, Bloody Mary" an inappropriate title as that nickname was not earned until many years later.

On the whole, it's an fine book to give to early teens who are starting to, or maybe need to be encouraged to, develop an interest in history, the role of women throughout history, and strong female historical figures. ... Read more

Would my feet even touch the ground if I sat on the throne?

These are the words of lady Jane Grey, as imagined by celebrated author Ann Rinaldi. Jane would become Queen of England for only nine days before being beheaded at the age of sixteen.

Here is a breathtaking story of English royalty with its pageantry, privilege, and surprising cruelty. As she did in her previous novel Mutiny's Daughter, Ms. Rinaldi uses powerful, evocative writing to bring to life a teenage girl caught in the grip of stirring times.

Anastasia is a carefree young duchess, daughter of NicholasAlexandrovitch Romanov, tsar of all the Russias in 1914. While her fatherattends to the turbulent affairs of a vast and complex country, Anastasia'smajor concerns are how to get out of her detested schoolwork to play in thesnow, go ice skating, or have picnics. She wears diamonds and rubies, and everymorning her mother tells her which matching outfit she and her three sistersshall wear that day. Slowly a hint of future trouble enters her happy, pamperedlife. Anastasia's younger brother, the future tsar, is a hemophiliac--a"bleeder" who cannot stop bleeding if he is cut or bruised. Anastasia begins tolearn that all is not well in the outside world, either. Not everyone in Russiaworships her father as she does, and the Germans are about to declare war onRussia. Anastasia's world gradually deteriorates, as reported in her youthful, often playful journal.

As Russia entered World War I, hunger and poverty grew among the peasants, andthe Romanov ruling family began to lose favor, culminating in theirmurders--including Anastasia's--by Bolshevik revolutionaries. This fictionalizeddiary of the mischievous youngest daughter's last four years gives a fascinatingglimpse into a life of unlimited wealth--and the subsequent downward spiral.Historical notes, family trees, and photographs round out Carolyn Meyer'scompelling contribution to the popular Royal Diaries series. 5-0 out of 5 stars Another interesting Royal Diaries novel
"Anastasia: The Last Grand Duchess" was a great book that gave a much more realistic version of this young girl's life than the movies made about her!

12-year-old Anastasia has a wonderful time with her family, playing with her younger brother and father, reading her sisters' diaries, and visiting relatives. However, after her 13th birthday, her carefree life begins to change, when war breaks out with Russia. Continuing until she is almost 17, you will be amazed at the changes, generally not for the better, that take place in this teenager's life.

I really learned a lot about Anastasia, who lived not very long ago. The only thing I'd say against this book was that some years of her life were covered pretty briefly, but other than that, this first funny, and then serious novel was a great read! I'd definitely recommend it for ages 11 and up - I think this exciting book would appeal to a wide audience!

4-0 out of 5 stars My name is Tika
I thought this book was very good. It really portrayed Anastasia as a real girl, not just someone in a history textbook in school. Anastasia is a young, blue-eyed, blonde Grand Duchess, the daughter of Czar Nickolas and Czarina Alexandra, the rulers of all Russia in 1914. The book tells all about Anastasia's life, how she snoops through her older sisters' diaries, goes sledding, plays jokes and games and puts on plays and stuff, birthday parties, and family acquaintances. The beginning is very detailed, and I like the invitation on the first page. However, as the book goes on, the story becomes less detailed. Sometimes Anastasia writes only once a month or even less, and I almost felt as if the author was in a hurry to get to the end of the book so she could write more about the days leading up to the Romanov family's tragic death. But if you liked this book and want to learn more about the Romanovs, read "Anastasia's album," by Hugh Brewster, or especially read "Nicholas and Alexandra: Tsar."

5-0 out of 5 stars PERFECT! period!
I am very hard to please, and I critize anything when I'm not[just look at the review i wrote on Lady of Palenque], but this book about Anastasia Romanov, the youngest daughter of Tsar Nicholas and Tsarina Alexandra, is excellent! I loved it! It gives great information and I was never bored reading it! I have always been fascinated about Russian royal family, and this is perfect for anybody who wanted to know about the young Grand Duchess besides the information they get from text books! Ms. Meyer really out did herself, and i hope she continues to write just as well on the rest of her future books! I recomend this book to anyone who is a fan of the Royal Diary series and is interested in Anastasia. this is a must read!

4-0 out of 5 stars An amazing book about princess Anastasia Romonov
Anastasia The Last Grand dutchess is about a young girl describing her life as a rich princess.Through her life Anastasia describes her life living as world war one goes on,and also being a prizoner in her own home. This book tells you the whole story about a real princess named Anastasia. The book also is not to deep that only adults could read it probbily the ages throgh 9-14. Anastasia is a wonderful book that I say describes her life well and deserves 4 and a half stars.

5-0 out of 5 stars Anastasia, The Last Grand Duchess - Excellent Story!
Anastasia, The Last Grand Duchess is a wonderful yet sad story of 12 year old, Anastasia Nicolaviena. Last daughter of the last Tsar (sometimes spelled Czar) of Russia Nicolas II, her diary describes of the events in her life, such as when Russia was at war with Germany, when her father abdicated, and when her family was exiled, which led eventually to her tragic death at age 17 (how wrong is that? Her life was over before she had a chance to start it!). This book was a wonderfully written book, despite tragic events. If you are a new fan in the Royal Diary Series and are not sure where to start, I suggest reading Anastasia, The Last Grand Duchess first. Trust me, this book is worth it. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Watch out, Elizabeth
This story takes place in London, during the rule of King Henry VIII. He has two daughters, one to his first wife, Catherine, he had their marriage anulled and then married Anne Boleyn, who beared his second daughter, in which after he has her beheaded. Mary, was his first born, and Elizabeth his second. They were both told they were not fit to rule London. Their father has another child, though, a boy this time, in which is fit to rule.
At the palace in which Elizabeth is staying, she gets news that her father has died. Now they go to London, and Elizabeth's brother becomes King. But when things don't go well for him and he dies, Mary becomes Queen and restores the Catholic religion. Elizabeth, a prostentant, is forced to attend Catholic mass, and is no longer allowed to beleive the Prostentant religion. The throne isn't as close as she thinks, and her sister won't easily be persuaded to make her the heir.
This book was particularly good. I enjoy fantasy stories as well as historical fiction, so this one i loved. I also read Mary, Bloody Mary, which in my opinion, wasn't an exciting of a story. This book makes you think how difficult life was back in the 1500's with all the beheadings and so. I would reccomend this book to everyone who love to read. I personally give this book 5 stars.

5-0 out of 5 stars A fascinating portrayal of the young Princess Elizabeth.
As the daughter of King Henry the VIII and Anne Boleyn, the wife he had executed on false charges of adultery simply because she did not birth him a son, the young Princess Elizabeth was at various times pampered, scorned, or simply ignored by her father. She and her young half-brother Edward, the heir to the throne, were close. But Elizabeth and her half-sister Mary - daughter of the woman Henry divorced to marry Anne Boleyn - were barely civil to each other. Mary hated Elizabeth simply for her mother's identity. When the King dies and Edward is crowned, the two sisters manage an uneasy peace - until Edward dies and Mary becomes Queen. Now Elizabeth is in grave danger. There are many reasons her sister could want her out of the way. Elizabeth will need all of her wits if she is to survive the dangers of her sister's reign so that someday she can become Queen of England. This was a fascinating portrait of Elizabeth as a teenager and young woman. I highly reccomend this book.

3-0 out of 5 stars beware of princess elizabeth
I liked the book. I was fond of elizabeth. I did my projects on her when I had the chance, I like that she showed men who was the boss, and that she didn't need them for anything at all, Elizabeth was indepent. I would consider this book to who ever likes to hear stories about the royal familys, like I do. Elizabeth was mean when she got mad,but she never send any body to cute their heads off for pleasure.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Suspense Novel!
This book is a great one, I loved it! I liked how you never knew what was going to happen because there was twists and turns at every page! I would tell you my favorite part, but I don't have one, I loved it all! I want to read it over and over again. My favorite character was Elizabeth because she is just like me. I would have done the exact same thing if I was in her situation. If you are looking to find a great book, this is it. You will love "Beware, Princess Elizabeth!"

So far I've read it over 9 times (and no, I'm NOT exagerrating). After I read it once I had become a total Tudor freak. So,enough about me.The book starts off with Elizabeth learning that her fathers dead. And that her brothers King (it would be SCAREY if my brother were 'king').I love how Carolyn Meyer gives history a fun twist.Plus the book has only 1 bad word.I'll sum it down to this :if your considering buying this book DO IT !! ... 5-0 out of 5 stars A TREASURE FOR YOUNG READERS
The author, an associate professor at Michigan State University, has already educated and entertained young readers with the lives of two composers in "The Farewell Symphony" and "Pictures At An Exhibition." When paired with rousing watercolor and ink illustrations by JoAnn Kitchel, both of those books are small treasures, as is "The Heroic Symphony," which relates the life of Beethoven.

As the story opens Beethoven has it all - fame, fortune, and the ability to play the piano better than anyone in all of Europe. However, the music lovers who flocked to hear him have no idea that he is slowly losing his hearing. Desperate, hoping for a cure in the spring of 1802 Beethoven fled to a remote clinic.. But there was no help for him.

As Beethoven despaired a melody began to fill his mind, and he realized that if he could no longer play the piano he could compose. He knew that he wanted to write music that would not only entertain but would also inspire, so he searched for inspiration. One name came to him - a war hero, Napoleon Bonaparte.

Later, upon learning that his hero, Bonaparte, had crowned himself Emperor of France Beethoven attempted to destroy his months of work, but was stopped by a close friend. At length Beethoven scratched the name Bonaparte from his manuscript and wrote a new title, "The Heroic Symphony."

A CD recording of Beethoven's Symphony No. 3 ("Eroica" is included. It is performed by the Chicago Symphony Orchestra under the direction of Sir Georg Solti.
