5-0 out of 5 stars What a great book!
My son and I LOVE reading this book...I get a kick out of the art history puns and the sophisticated content and he loves the pictures and the story of Pigasso and Mootisse (both of which he now says frequently). I highly recommend it and would say it's one of my favorites.

5-0 out of 5 stars A "Moosterpiece"
When Pigasso Met Mootisse is a wonderful parody detailing the rivalry, feuding and eventual friendship of artists Pablo Picasso and Henri Matisse. Nina Laden's creative and witty text, full of wordplay and puns, will have adults and children alike, laughing out loud and also offers the subtle lesson of acceptance and respect for others and their work. But, it's her bold, bright, busy and humorous illustrations that will mesmerize youngsters and older art lovers will enjoy finding the "pig" and "bull" representations of Picasso's and Matisse's best known works. The biographical afterword, discussing their lives, painting and relationship, will enhance the story and give children a better understanding of these two great artists. This is a marvelous, vivid picture book, perfect for kids 4-8; a hilarious story for the ears and a visual feast for the eyes.

5-0 out of 5 stars Family Favorite
I have been reading this to my children now 6, 5, and 3, since it's release in '98. It is still a frequent request. It, also, has sparked a deep interest in all my children for art. We have been to several art museums, and they all always try to find the 'Pigasso' or 'Mootise' paintings.

5-0 out of 5 stars A fun and enjoyable book
We have shared art and artists with our son ,who just turned three, since he was an infant. He knew a Picasso from a Monet by 26 months. He just got this book for his birthday and he loves it. I love it to as well as the mini bios in the back of the book.
We have paired it with Picasso and Mattisse for kids.(Great art board books for little guys.)

5-0 out of 5 stars Eye candy for kids
I have read this to both of my daughters many times. They are 2.5 and 5.5years old. They actually sit still for the whole thing. The art is incredible. If you have even heard of the real artists you will enjoy the author's excellent ability emulate the artists' style. It is a beginning to introduce children to art and understand how much fun art can be. I feel like I should by another just in case something happens to my original book! ... Read more

The barnyard rooster crows and Jack wakes up -- hungry, of course! What does he want for breakfast? A big pancake! But first, Jack's mother needs flour from the mill, an egg from the black hen, milk from the spotted cow, butter churned from fresh cream, and firewood for the stove. Will Jack ever get his pancake?

With his trademark vibrant collage illustrations and a lively text, Eric Carle has created a mouthwatering tale for young readers. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Great food book
This is a great book about where food comes from. One morning Jack decides he wants a pancake for breakfast. His mother tells him "Fine," but first he has to go get the wheat from the field and winnow it and then take it to the mill and help mill it. He also has to collect an egg from the chicken, milk the cow, churn the butter, and cut firewood for fuel for the stove. By the time his pancake is finally ready to eat, he's really hungry!

5-0 out of 5 stars This book fascinated the kids.
Pancakes, Pancakes! is another beautifully illustrated Eric Carle book for the youngsters. My son likes nothing better than a huge plate of pancakes for breakfast and was attracted to this book immediately upon viewing its cover depicting a large, happy pancake.

Pancakes, Pancakes! tells the story of a hungry little boy who wakes one morning with a craving for pancakes. He asks him mom for pancakes but she's too busy and tells him to collect the things needed to make them instead (they apparently don't sell the frozen ones in this story). He's a good little boy and does so without complaint. He has to make the flour (by hand!), wait for the hen to lay an egg, milk the spotted cow, churn the butter and so on until he has all of the ingredients assembled. Frankly, I was surprised this poor child didn't complain and then collapse from exhaustion! Finally, the sweet boy gets his pancakes and all ends well.

My kids were riveted to this tale and especially enjoyed the illustrations. They were particularly fascinated by the page containing a picture of the ingredients the boy collected. The story also invited a lot of questions (my kids are used to microwave pancakes and were quite bewildered by the lengths the boy had to go to for breakfast). They both seemed to enjoy it very much and, best of all, it held their attention and made them think and ask questions instead of zoning out while I read. All of this combined with the beautiful art work makes Pancakes, Pancakes! a keeper for us.

5-0 out of 5 stars Pancakes, Pancakes!
The story "Pancakes, Pancakes!" is a wonderful book for children. Eric Carle is a great author and has many other good children's books. This story is about a boy who wants pancakes for breakfast but has to do the work to get it. He has to get the wheat, butter, milk the cows, get eggs from the chickens, and build a fire and everything just so that his mother can make him a big pancake. I think this book teaches kids that you have to work to get what you want. Overall, it is a good story and I think kids can learn from it.

5-0 out of 5 stars Pancakes, Pancakes
If you and your kids (ages 2-7) like to eat pancakes. You will surely enjoy helping them make pancakes with you in the kitchen after reading this yummy (though not edible) book. Your taste buds will salivate and you'll be heading to the cabinet to check for ingredients to help your little ones make fresh pancakes.

5-0 out of 5 stars Pancakes, Pancakes!
Pancakes, Pancakes has been my favorite "elementary" book for years! I love this book even now and I am in middle school. Eric Carle is a great children's author. I have about every one of his books he has ever written. The illustrations are beautiful to look at and the stories are so appealing to young readers. Great job, Mr. Eric Carle!!!!!!!! ... "'Always chicken feed! Day after day--year afteryear--I'm sick of it!' squawked Big Brown Rooster."

In this deliciously imaginative book by sisters Janet Stevens and Susan Stevens Crummel, a hungry and fed-up rooster suddenly recalls hisfamous Great-Granny, a fabulous chef who penned a book of recipes for future generations. He hunts down her cookbook--The Joy of CookingAlone by L.R. Hen.

Rooster carefully turned the pages. "So many recipes--and I thought she just baked bread! Look at the strawberry shortcake!... Yes sirree--just like Great-Granny, I'll be a cook! COOK-A-DOODLE-DO-O-O!"

Upon settling down with this remarkable tale, every child's naturalcuriosity for cooking will likewise come bursting forth. There is a greatbasic story here, with plenty of creative spins on The Little Red Hen. In this version, Rooster--rebuffed by Dog, Cat, and Goose just like his Granny was--finds companionship in the kitchen with Turtle, Iguana, and Potbellied Pig. As Turtle reads the recipe aloud, Iguana continuously confuses the instructions to great comedic effect, Amelia Bedelia-style.(He tries to cut butter with scissors and beat an egg with a baseball bat.)Pig, on the other hoof, asks over and over for a chance to taste the batter.("Looks mighty dry in there," said Pig. "Perhaps I should taste it.") Stevens's sure, friendly illustrations evoke a tremendous amount of character and activity in lightning-fast time. Take, forexample, the cooking hats all the creatures don when they get to the kitchen:Turtle sports a copper-bottomed soup pot on his head, Iguana wields a candy-striped oven mitt, and Pig is wearing a kitchen towel, tied kerchief-style. They're ready!

Scattered through the story are sidebars with cooking tips that offer information on the ingredients, measurements, and techniques mentionedin the text. (Even if kids don't want to read them, they're quite handyfor adults answering questions while reading.) Kids will love this lively, slapstick story of teamwork in action, and no doubt will want to try making strawberry shortcake! Fortunately, the recipe for"Great-Granny's Magnificent Strawberry Shortcake" is in the back. (Ages 4 and older) --Jean Lenihan ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Reading fun in the kitchen
Crummel and Stevens do not disappoint with this book that is wonderfully designed to bring children into the story by way of their stomach. This book is a rescipe for fun and games in the kitchen with your children. Be sure to participate by making the strawberry shortcake along with the characters in the book.

5-0 out of 5 stars Delicious Entertainment!
Look out Amelia Bedelia! Big Brown Rooster and friends are cooking strawberry shortcake and the misunderstandings abound! Literal interpretations and great illustrations make this an extremely entertaining picture book. Read the book, create the shortcake, and eat it! The recipe included in the text is fantastic.

5-0 out of 5 stars outrageous animation !
The animal's expressions are SO animated that it is a visual DELIGHT as well as a fun read ! What a treat !

5-0 out of 5 stars My 3 and 4 year-olds' favorite - educational and fun!
This is a great book that has lots of depth. My three year old loves the repetition and the characterisation, without realizing he's learning concepts and facts about food and cooking. It's clearly their favorite book.

5-0 out of 5 stars A must have book for your collection!

5-0 out of 5 stars So much fun!
This is a great book - full of good old fashioned rhyming fun. That's why my husband and I love it. Our toddler loves the colorful, charming illustrations. Either way, it's a winner and on our top ten list!

5-0 out of 5 stars Mrs. Wishy-washy Delights Again
I teach kindergarten, and my students have read all the books about Mrs. Wishy-washy and her animals. This book has the same fun, joyful tradition of the other stories. The children's immediate comment was "Read it again!". One child wanted to write to Joy Cowley to see if she was going to write another one. This book is a winner.

5-0 out of 5 stars Fun To Read
I have recently purchased this book for my 2 year old and she cannot put this book down. The pictures are wonderful and full of color. The pictures are so big and the story plot is not that long so that for non readers it is just great and lots of fun to read. Suggestions, make noises as you read the few lines and have them call out and descripe the colors and animals seen on the pages. I truly recommend this book because most importantly my daughter loved it and I loved seeing her face. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars fun and unique clay illustrations!!
I've been reading this book since I was young and still immensely enjoy it, mostly because of the illustations. Edith Chase uses a different kind of medium for the pictures...clay! The blended colors and textures are eye-catching and witty...very appropiate for children of all ages.

The text is actually a rhyme written by a different author before the whole book came together. I'm pretty sure Edith Chase rewrote it, though. The rhythm of the words make them fun play for your voice.

The story itself is about a cute calf and his loving mother living on a farm. The calf nurses, eats, runs, plays, and grows...children can definitely relate to this book. ... Read more

Beginning readers to keep them reading...and laughing.

Minnie and Moo are cows, best friends, and the drollest duo to come along since Frog and Toad. "We could do that," says Moo to Minnie, as they watch the farmer quit work and hang his hat on a nail. "Do what?" Minnie asks. "Drive that tractor," says Moo, ever the dreamer. "I have been thinking. What hoes the farmer have that we do not?" "Hands and feet," says Minnie, ever practical. "No," says Moo. "Boots and a hat." And buoyed by that undeniable logic, the two set off on a drive that they believe takes them to the moon. 5-0 out of 5 stars A great book!
I purchased this book for my library and read it regularly during my storytimes to pre-schoolers. I have also read it to the kids during the Summer Fun program. The story lends itself very well to reading aloud and is a very entertaining book for all ages. I enjoy it so much, I've decided to buy a personal copy.

5-0 out of 5 stars ABSOLUTELY HILARIOUS
I bought Minnie & Moo go to the Moon for my 4-year old daughter. While reading it to her, I laughed so hard I could hardly continue the book. It's a great story for children and adults alike. I liked it so much I went back and bought 5 more copies to send to family & friends to read. My office mates even bought copies for themselves. A wonderful hilarious story.

5-0 out of 5 stars Minnie and Moo Go to the Moon
My children love this book. We have checked it out from the library so many times I figured I might as well buy it. The cows are so loveable and the story even appeals to adults.

5-0 out of 5 stars Minnie and Moo, two wacky cows, go for a unique tracker ride
This uproariously funny book had every one --adults included -- laughing throughout. Minnie, always the logician, decides that all she needs to drive the farmer's tracker are his boots and hat. A skeptical Moo joins her for a tumultuous ride through the farm yard, passed a flying pig to...the moon? We loved the magic words the cows used to get the tracker started. The moonsters looked suspiciously like angry, featherless chickens. ... Read more

"6:32 a.m. This is the farm. My partner, Bill, and I wereworking the barnyard shift. It was peaceful. Quiet. Then we got thecall."
Much of this fowl-filled homage to Dragnet (DUM DE DUM DUM!) will be loston kids--and a few grownups, for that matter. But that doesn't make thisstraight-faced send-up of that famous crime-partner show--and a dozen-odd fairytales thrown in for good measure--any less funny.

"So you're saying you were robbed, is that right, ma'am? What exactly is missingfrom the nest, ma'am? Eggs, ma'am? Chicks, ma'am?" But it turns out that it'speppers that have gone missing--a peck of "perfect purple, almost-pickledpeppers." But nobody was talking: "We had Horner in the corner and were tryingto make Little Boy Blue quack." Then our intrepid pair of web-footedinvestigators gets a break in the case when a tub of "tartest tasty tomahtoes"turns up missing. DUM DE DUM DUM!

It's just more wit from the wonderful Margie Palatini, who brought us Piggie Pie and Zoom Broom, backed up on thisassignment by the spirited illustrations of Richard Egielski. (Ages 4 to 8)--Paul Hughes ... Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars Cute
Dragnet (dum de dum dum), nursery rhymes (Little Boy Blue), James Cagney (you dirty rat), and Hawaii 5-O (Book 'im, ducko) all contribute to this clever detective tale, and the typeface looks like typewriter type, just as a detective's report would have looked before computers.

The inventive use of other sources and the logical detection of the plot make this a winner for adults. I can't wait to see how my four-year-old grandson likes it.

Parts of some illustrations didn't seem to have anything to do with the story, but the lettuce leaf hanging from the dirty rat's chin is perfect, though obvious.

If the children you read to like mysteries, try the Nate the Great series by Marjorie Sharmat. They are easy-to-read books and great logic puzzles for the young.

5-0 out of 5 stars Fun for both children AND parents alike
What a fun and funny book Margie Palatini has written--and Richard Egielski's cartoonish yet deadpan illustrations complement it beautifully. Palatini has taken the "Dum de dum dum" theme from TV's long-ago "Dragnet" and applied it here to a barnyard mystery. Sounds simple, and simplistic, but she soars in weaving into the story all sorts of fairy tale and nursery rhyme goodies--not to mention wonderful wordplay, like:

"A lot of squawking going on down in the coop area, Ducktective Web. Looks like fowl play. Report says feathers are flying. Chief says we should check out the chicks."

"Chicks?"

"Check."

"Let's fly." DUM DE DUM DUM . . .

Palatini works in Peter Piper and his pack of pickled peppers (upping the ante by calling them perfect and purple as well), a falsely accused Little Boy Blue who offers the alibi that HE didn't do it because he was under the haystack, fast asleep--which the witnesses then confirm with: "The sheep were in the meadow. Cows in the corn." Swing back again quickly to the "Dragnet" end of things and the author makes one of the suspects an actual Dirty Rat (aptly named Ratzo).

This is fun for children and possibly even more fun for their baby boomer parents. It's a great read.

4-0 out of 5 stars A cop show tailor made for the preschool set
Let's say you're a parent that loves nothing more in the entire world than to sit down and watch a little "Dragnet" on the telly. Now let's say you're that same parent, but you'd like to instill the wonders of Jack Webb in your little one. Enter Margie Palatini and Richard Egielski's, "The Web Files". More "dum de dum dum"s than you could shake a fist at.

Bill and Web (partners) are working the barnyard shift when they hear trouble ah-brewing. Someone's been pirating a peck of purple peppers (ready for pickeling). It's off to confront he usual suspects, when our heroes get a lead. In the end, you can rest assured that the dastardly villain will have met his just desserts and our brave ducktectives can work another day.

There are people who will buy this book, read it over and over, and love every minute of it. They'll revel in the exceedingly terrible puns that crop up with frightening regularity. They'll soak up the detective atmosphere (a combination of "Dragnet" and Ed McBain). They'll never get bored with this puppy, and that's all right. There really are some nice things in this book. Egielski's adept illustrations compliment the rising action, best displayed in a scene in which a variety of fairy tale characters hound the police precinct with tales of woe. I was especially taken with the third degree our heroes give a distraught Little Boy Blue.

As for myself, the aforementioned scenes are gold. But the puns.... lordy begordy the puns. Admittedly I have a low pun tolerance. If you can read the following sentence without twitching, then this is undoubtedly a good book to get: "A lot of squawking going on down in the coop area, Ducktective Web. Looks like fowl play. Report says feathers are flying. Chief says we should check out the chicks." You get the idea. I, personally, had problems with that sentence, but that's just me. Other people will adore this book. It does have some nice touches here and there and is chock full of enough movies and cop shows to bring a chuckle every other page. If you like a good rousing yarn and don't mind slightly painful text, this is the perfect book for a dark and rainy night. Hint: Have your kids hum the "Dragnet" closing music when the book's villain is tried and convicted. The book supplies all the "Dum de dum dum"s itself.

5-0 out of 5 stars The Web Files
Hysterically funny book, especially for Dragnet lovers. Third and Fourth graders love the book, second graders don't get all the humor. Well worth a fifteen buck investment.

5-0 out of 5 stars A wacky, hilarious detective tale
The Web Files is a wacky, hilarious detective tale set in a barnyard with two ducks as heroes. Dum De Dum Dum. Styled on the old Dragnet series model, the tale unfolds with minimum clipped dialogue and lots of implied action humourously expressed by the color illustrations of Richard Egielski. This school age child's book's style is contagious. Be prepared for repeat requests to read this one aloud. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Stuart Little
Stuart Little is a mouse that is about 2 inches tall. Stuart is part of the family of the Fredrick.C.Littles. He has a friendly but shy manner. He's very smart for a mouse but his size gives him trouble sometimes. His life is an adventure when he sets out on the age of seven,he trys to find his dearest friend,Margalo, a friendly little bird who stayed with the Littles in their Boston Fern.

Stuart Little is an interesting book. I enjoyed reading it beacause it was funny and it had interesting vocabulary. There were some sad parts in the book. This Book got me absorbed into it.

I would recommend this book for children of the ages of 8 to 12. If you like fantasy stories then you would love this book. If you are a person who likes certain kinds of fantasy books then you should probably enjoy Stuart Little because you may get absorbed into the book. Also if you like fantasy books that have animals in it that talk and you like the Author E.B.White then you'll like this book.

5-0 out of 5 stars a great author with three great books to share!
All three books are pretty good. Charlottes web is the best with a cute little pig named wilbur longing for a friend. Stuart little is also a good book. You get to see the world through the eyes of a mouse. The third book-Trumpet of the swan-is only ok!

5-0 out of 5 stars The Triple Crown of White's Fictional Work
My 6-year-old daughter and I throughly enjoyed all three stories.

Most Creative Story: The "Trumpet Swan" because of the way White takes the reader to different places and settings through the eyes of Louis the Swan.

Most Profound Story: "Charlotte's web". Of all my years of education it took this simple book to grasp a real appreciation of nature and the web of life.

Funniest Story: "Stuart Little". Most of us have on more than one occassion laughed ourselves to tears upon reading, hearing, or watching some funny event. My last time occurred when reading about the trials and tribulations that Stuart had to endure in order to wash himslef in the morning (Picturing him swinging a mallot to turn on the hot water was for me hysterically funny!). I found the Stuart Little of this book much more cute and amusing than the one in a recent movie with the same title.

5-0 out of 5 stars The Trumpet of the swan
Louis is the main character and he is a swan. He can't talk to other swans. Sam Beaver, a boy takes Louis to school, where he learns to read and write. But this isn't work to other swans and actually Louis was in love with the beautiful swan, Serena, and she spurns hin because he was defective. And Louis's father, the old cob, does a difficult thing. He stoles a trumpet so his son would be able to win his love. Louis wins on his love and pay the trumpet money.

5-0 out of 5 stars Stuart Little is a good book
Stuart Little is a mouse and he is a great help around the house, but sometimes he gets into trouble, like when he got dumped in the garbage dump. I think it's cool how a human mommy and daddy had a baby who is a mouse instead of a kid. I like how Stuart liked Margalo the bird.

Kids that should read this book should be 4 or up. ... Read more

Black and White is an interesting title for a book that aims to prove there's no such thing as black and white. But read on and you will see that irony and playful deception are running themes in this multidimensional, nonlinear picture story, which was awarded the 1991 Caldecott Medal. In it, a normal-looking cow contains a robber literally pointing at one of the plot's various possible outcomes, which remain tentative as long as they are formulated by young readers. Seeing new angles and clues every time they open the book, these readers will probably astound adult onlookers with their excitement and ease at navigating the unknown in a literary medium akin to interactive multimedia. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Great for younger, advanced readers
This book is a great book for kids to read by themselves. It's a series of seemingly four separate, odd stories (two stories on each page). One story is about a boy on a train, the other about kids and their parents' routine, the third is about passengers waiting for a train, and the fourth is about Holstein cows. They're all very odd stories; the parents come home wearing newspaper, Holstein cows are difficult to see, and there are pieces of newspaper flying in the air like snow.

Kids will enjoy this book because each time you read the stories, a different meaning occurs. The writing is creative and arranged imaginatively according to the words. There are some larger vocabulary words that may need to be looked up, such as avalanche, embankment, and udder. Because of the four stories and strange situations, this book would probably be more appropriate for more advanced readers in 2nd and 3rd grade. I even had to read it four times to figure out the stories and how they're related.

5-0 out of 5 stars Particularly lovely
I enjoyed this book. Not knowing what to expect, my husband and I read each of the four stories individually. After finishing one we'd start over and begin with another. Macauley should be lauded for the different modes of art he employs, if nothing else. The watercolor illustrations of a boy on a train differ nicely from the pen and ink drawings of the two kids and their crazy parents. Most enjoyable, perhaps, is the series of train station commuters, waiting for the train and slowly going mad. Kids will enjoy following the escaped criminal (complete with black mask and black & white striped shirt) as he runs from story to story throughout the book. This would not read especially well to a large group of children, seeing as how the pictures are particularly small and difficult to follow from a distance. Also some of these stories lack words altogether. But individual children will enjoy finding new and different details in each of the four tales. Altogether, a fascinating book.

5-0 out of 5 stars A Brilliant Example of Why a Picture Is Worth 1000 Words
This book clearly deserves more than five stars for its brilliant plot, fascinating design, terrific illustrations, and thought-provoking premise. This book will stretch the imagination and thinking of anyone who sees it, no matter of what age or intellect. And the process of doing the thinking will be enormous good fun.

The book starts with a warning. "This book appears to contain a number of stories that do not necessarily occur at the same time." Then you get hints. It might contain more than one story, or it might be four stories, or then again, four parts of one story. "Careful inspection of both words and pictures is recommended." You will be a story detective, not unlike someone trying to solve a crime after the fact.

Each page is divided into four stories, each of which generally takes up one-fourth of the page. They are located in the same position relative to one another so you can keep the story thread you are following straight. Each has a title.

"Seeing Things" is about a boy taking his first train trip alone. After a long, mysterious delay, he arrives at a large station to be greeted by his parents. His mother sympathizes with his difficult journey.

"Problem Parents" relates how perfectly normal, hard-working parents return from commuting to work one night wearing costumes made out of newspapers. Soon, they have their children costumed this way too.

"A Waiting Game" shows a crowd of adults waiting for the commuter train on an outdoor platform. Pretty soon they get bored, and the fun begins.

"Udder Chaos" starts with a cow licking a man in a convict suit, and shows how cattle provide camouflage for themselves and everything around them.

An occasional element from one of the stories crosses over, and shows up in another story. From these tiny steps, you can begin to unravel the tangled plot.

The book earned the Caldecott Medal for the best illustrated children's book in 1991. I think this is outstandingly illustrated, even for a Caldecott winner. The images carry the story much more than the occasional words do. Without the fascinating visual display of the book's concept, there would be no story here that you could unravel.

Upon rereading, you and your child will grasp additional meaning in the images and words. This will give you a lot to talk and think about. As such, you will welcome this over all of the books where you read the same story in the same way, over ... and ... over ... and ... over ... again.

One of the most difficult things for a child to learn is how subjective perception is. I think this book is terrific for making that point, and helping to create an appreciation for clear communication. I suggest that every family with children purchase and regularly read this book.

After you have enjoyed this book many times, I suggest that you think about where else a partial story is presented. For example, you and your child might go to a train station or airport and watch the people. You could make up stories about what you see. Then, I suggest that you go up and interview the people to hear what they think their story is.

Find the harmony, under the muddied surface of subjective, unfocused perception!

5-0 out of 5 stars One of the most fascinating books I have read
I got this book because of the Caldecott award, however, when I read it, I was amazed. I loved the four different stories, and how they were intertwined. It makes you realize; one small incident can impact so much.

5-0 out of 5 stars Oustanding Book For All Ages
I found this book to be good for all ages. I bought the book for my two young children and found out that my oldest at 13 also enjoyed reading the book. He found it interesting trying to figure out of the story all tied together. My youngest also enjoyed putting words of her own into the story because she is not yet able to read. It is a great book for all ages. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars An absolute must for any one working with young children.
I first came across this book while student teaching and fell in love instantly. I have used it for many theme units - letter (W), farm unit, and rhyming words unit. I have even made flannel board pieces to go along with the story and put in my literacy centers. My supervising teachers loved the flannel pieces so much they had me make them some also. You children/students will love this book and will in time learn to read it themselves, just as my kindergartners did. GET THIS BOOK :).

5-0 out of 5 stars Absolutely loved by children, the favorite on the shelf.
Be prepared to read it over and over again. The pre-schoolers laugh and giggle. They love to say "Wishy-Washy" and can't wait til the next page that opens up. A short enough book, even your littlest reader knows the next page.

5-0 out of 5 stars Ms Wishy-Washy is a delightful book for new readers.
Ms Wishy-Washy is a colorful picture book for new readers. The cow, pig, and duck see the mud, and they wade, roll, and waddle in it. Ms Wishy-Washy then scrubs each animal clean. Then guess what the animals do next?

The book presents one word change per page and gives the new reader enough repetitions so that the reader learns the repeated words. The illustrations are marvelous. Children love this book, but so do adults. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Introducing Reading
This book was reviewed in a graduate course in reading that I was taking. "I Went Walking" is a predictable print book. Such books are excellent in the very early stages of reading. Children memorize the book as you read it over and over and over again. Repetition the very thing our adult mind questions, children ask for repetition that they need. They learn to "read" you the book even when the book is not there. This stage of memorization is the first stage of reading. The child then moves to recognizing the words. For example, "Is this word 'cow'?" So both kindergarten teachers and parents can use this book. It is good to have a half dozen of these predictable print books at home. (Look up: Dorothy Butler's "My Brown Bear Barney".)

5-0 out of 5 stars This book is a treasure
I discovered "I Went Walking" when I taught first grade. It was a part of their literature series early in the year. I have no children of my own and I own both the board book and the paperback edition of this book because I love the illustrations and the rhythmical quality of the text. As someone who has professionally worked with children ages 2-12, I find that this kind of text is invaluable to early readers (ages 2-7). Children can easily pick up on the patterns in the sentences and begin developing many pre-reading skills (like being able to identify the left to right movement of written sentences). To find books that your young child will want to read over and over again is a jewel in their literacy development. To find books like this that you will want to read over and over again with your child is a treasure box of time shared!

4-0 out of 5 stars Good companion for Brown Bear, Brown Bear
This is just like the Brown Bear book. I love Julie Vivas' illustrations. Repetitive text makes it easy for your child to read with you (or to you!).

3-0 out of 5 stars Perfect for Big Book usage
I developed a lesson plan for 1st grade students using the big book version of this book. The "what is coming next" theme of the book is perfect for young children to form predictions.

5-0 out of 5 stars Get this AND "Brown Bear, Brown Bear, What Do You See"
Our son loves this book. In his shorthand he calls it "walking" and asks for it regularly when we sit down to read. I read a review that indicated this book is too similar to "Brown Bear, Brown Bear, etc." but I would disagree. Our son likes them both equally but they do not seem interchangeable to him (or to me for that matter). I would also echo the comment that the child character is appealingly ambiquous and could be either gender. The quality of the illustration and the story presented are delightful. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars SUPERB & COMFORTING Memories
The Tomten was my first and favorite childhood book. Today, I read it to my daughter as her bedtime story. It is her favorite book also. This book is the perfect comforting bedtime story for children of all ages. The author magically weaves fantasy and security into the story of The Tomten. Reading The Tomten gives you that "safe in the bed between your parents" feeling we all remember.

The author, Austrid Lindgren, passed away today. The world has lost a timeless treasure. Thank you Mrs. Lindgren. You will be missed by generations.

5-0 out of 5 stars How Comforting to Know the Tomten is On His Rounds
I have loved this book for over 40 years. The copy I have was printed in Sweden a long time ago but I am very glad that this story is available as a nicely affordable paperback because it's such a sweet and comforting tale that lots of children will love. The beautiful illustrations capture perfectly the crisp, cold, snowy atmosphere of a still winter's night as the Tomten, a small spirit and guardian of a humble farm homestead goes about on his secret rounds doing his caretaker duties in his gentle, loving way. He whispers encouragment to the sleeping animals and children. He has seen many hundreds of winters and so he knows that "winters come and winters go, summers come and summers go" and the wheel of the year turns on and on. I encourage you to read this to children to help them feel safe and cozy and snug in their beds on a cold, dark winter's night...maybe try it this Winter Solstice and be sure to keep a look-out for tiny footprints in the snow around your home.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent children's book
"The Tomten" by Astrid Lindgren is one of the most comforting books for children. The story remains with them through a lifetime. My 32 year old son and 35 year old nephew still would like to have "Tomten" books to read to the young ones in their families.

5-0 out of 5 stars What is a Tomten?
A tomten is a gnome like creature that stands watch while the rest of the world is sleeping. This old tale should be recommended reading for everyone. The tomten is disappearing with our grandparents and great-grandparents. This is a wonderful tale!

4-0 out of 5 stars WISH I WERE GOING TO PAREE ALSO
The appeal to me was simple. The group (farmer and his animals)
were in the countryside of France and they were going to Paris.
Ms. Stock, as illustrator, does a fine job of giving a sense of
place in her illustrations. I have been to Paris and I think she
captures its essence. And like me, the animals are "already planning their next trip."

A child of picture-book age, would have to have some pretty serious wanderlust to love this book for the same reasons that I do. But my 3 year old granddaughter loves the illustrations of the animals, particularly when they are doing very human-like things, such as visiting a museum and eating in a restaurant. "They are so silly" she exclaims, and then chuckles.

That is a four-star recommendation in my book!

4-0 out of 5 stars AN UPROARIOUS ADVENTURE
"How are you gonna' keep 'em down on the farm after they've seen Paree?" The answer to that question is you're not, at least in the case of Monsieur Monmouton's live stock.

Monsieur Monmouton is a farmer, and the proud owner of almost a dozen silly sheep, five inquiring geese, three avaricious goats, four almost contented cows, numerous pigeons, two plus size pigs, nine clucking chickens, a proud rooster, and one very put upon dog.

During the summer people would often flee Paris to picnic or camp in the farmer's pleasant fields. During the evenings some of his visitors would tell him about life in Paris, and when they left they invited him to visit them.

Much as Monsieur Monmouton wanted to visit that beautiful city and as much as he thought he needed a vacation, he had no one to look after his animals. The solution? He piled all of them into his old truck and took them with him.

What an adventure that was! The sheep couldn't wait to go to the Rue de Faubourg Saint-Honore to see the latest fashions, while the geese trotted off to the Seine for a boat ride. The Luxembourg Gardens were in peril when the goats arrived, and the cows strolled the Louvre.

Author/illustrator Stock pairs her story with glowing watercolor illustrations that fill the pages of this unlikely, uproarious adventure.

4-0 out of 5 stars MILK MAKERS
I understand why this was a reading rainbow book. It is a great experiment activity non-fiction book. This book exaplins how milk is processed. Most children most likely think that the milk in the fridge comes from the store. What they may not realize is that it comes from a farm miles away. This book goes into great detail how milk is made, and the makeup of cattle. it also gives brief descriptions of variuos types of cattle and dairy products. The illustrations use labels and bright colors. I think this is a good non-fiction book for children. It is in a language that they understand and it is easily read. The book is also very accurate as are all, her books. Gibbons was raised on a dairy farm and has made numerous trips to the dairy farm.
In close this is a good book for children, especially for a science unit. I would have this in my classroom library for childen to perhaps complete a report about milk or other products. Gibbons has a great series on the way variuos things are made.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent resource book on farming and dairy production

4-0 out of 5 stars Good Choice
The jeep series illustrations are always fabulous but the text doesn't quite live up to Sheep in a Jeep. It's still worth getting. I just wish it came as a board book.

5-0 out of 5 stars Humorous and realistic story about a group hike
This book is a hit with the 3-year-old I gave it to and with me. The rhymes are delightful, and the story describes the kinds of adventures and challenges that make hiking fun: route finding, weather, soggy snacks, group dynamics. It's a great way to prepare a child for what hiking involves

4-0 out of 5 stars Sheep can be pretty entertaining
This is a good choice for a toddler or preschooler who can't sit still for very long. My 1 yo son likes the sound of the words as he jogs back and forth over my lap. I like the illustrations; sheep with big pink faces are kinda cute. It's a good very early reader book since it rhymes and there are some repeating words.

It's nice to give a model of a hiking group who gets lost and comes out of it ok, for those beginning hikers who worry about that.

5-0 out of 5 stars Sheep Take a Hike

I love their surprising ending. I have loved following the five sheep and their seagull friend through their adventures. Young children who read with me love to look for the seagull, to spot the sheep with the knitting, and to find the rhymes on every page. The books are easy reading for the newest readers, with beautiful pictures on every page. ... Read more
