For kids who can't get enough of television's Blue'sClues, this storybook with 63 stickers should help tide them over until the next episode. In this colorful paperback, the irrepressible Blue is off tothe farm with her earnest pal Steve, who asks readers to help identifyanimal tracks, figure out what kinds of animals belong on the farm, and decipher what Blue's favorite animal is by the clues left throughoutthe book. The illustrations consist of color-drenched, Teletubbies-style panoramas, superimposed withAstroturf, paper cutouts, clay figures, and what appears to be lettuce. The text is straight out of a scriptdesigned to get kids excited about sleuthing: "I was wondering," Steve asks, eyebrows skyward, "do you know what all these animals like to eat? Youdo? Will you get the animals their lunch? Great!" Your kids will hardlynotice this isn't TV! (Ages 3 to 6) ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Challenging and fun
My three year old nephew just got this book and loves it. He examines each page carefully and shouts "a clue! a clue!" whenever he sees the trademark blue paw print. He also informed me that he likes "that guy" meaning Steve, the genial young TV host. A cute book with lots of colorful stickers.

5-0 out of 5 stars Fun Fun Fun
Our daughter spends many hours reading and re-reading this book and interacting with Blue. It comes out for reading especially when Blue's on tv and she points at the book and tv and has really developed her learning and memory retention and recollection. The whole Blue's videos and books are a must and in association with parental teaching your child will improve greatly. Where was Blue many years ago for our other children. One of the best learning shows around. Our daughter is two years old and now has a great imagination and play skills, which, thanks to Blue and Steve, is improving each and everyday of Blues Clues. Buy this book, plenty of fun for your kids.

My son just loves Blues Clues. He has learned all the farm sounds from this book. I highly recommend it. My son is 2.

5-0 out of 5 stars my 4 year old's favorite book
This is my daughter's favorite book. It comes with 2 pages of stickers which go into the book. We had to work together to put the stickers in place and it was like doing a puzzle. Now it is HER book and she has changed around some of the stickers to make it even more hers.

5-0 out of 5 stars It was a fun way to learn about the animals on a farm.
It is one of the most fun ways for preschoolers to learn about both kinds of animals on a farm. Steve makes learning fun and exciting. The interaction of reality and make-believe is really refreshing. Keep up the good work.

Hilda Mae Heifer has lost her melodic mi-mi-moo!

A klunk on the head and now Hilda's simply not sure what sound to make.

Is it a mew, or an oink, or possibly a honk? With the eager help of the farm animals, Hilda is determined, once again, to sing her sensational moo. Which should most certainly be a MOO-MOOO-MOO-MOO.

Moo Who? is a raucous read-aloud for the youngest noisemakers.

5-0 out of 5 stars Outstanding in every way
This has been a favorite book of ours for years and years and years. "The Year at Maple Hill Farm" is written and illustrated by Alice and Martin Provenson. It documents, from January through December, the hard tasks and simple pleasures inherent in life on a farm--everything from bird migrations to the foaling of the horses to lazy summer days spent doing nothing more important swatting flies.

Humans and animals co-exist peacefully here. The illustrations are simple and gently colored, with subtle detail sprinkled throughout. The animals are given a great deal of personality (see especially the cats, who are wonderfully quirky) and the story itself, while utterly basic and free of frills, has an undertow of narrative propulsion that makes each page seem a natural outgrowth of the previous page.

I can't recommend the book highly enough. If you live in the country, you will recognize so much of what is here. If you live in the city, you will welcome the peaceful rhythms of this charming book. ... Read more

Book Description

The Freddy the Pig books have long been considered classics of American children's literature and with each reissue by The Overlook Press, this wonderful pig is charming his way into the hearts of more and more readers, adults and children alike. Freddy's Bean Farm is a frolicking place and Freddy--whether he's a pilot, cowboy, explorer, politician, or detective--will always save the day and be sure to have fun doing it.

In Freddy and Mr. Camphor Freddy is positively worn out from his job as President of the First Animal Bank and-- as if this wasn't enough responsibility for one pig!--his position as Editor of the Bean Home News. At the urging of the farm animals, Freddy answers an ad in the Bean Home News for a position as caretaker of a large estate for the duration of the summer. Freddy is a bit overwhelmed when what was meant to be a relaxing little respite from the world turns out to be a real challenge...but the pig will muddle through!

"They are the American version of the great English classics, such as the Pooh books or The Wind in the Willows."-- The New York Times Book Review

"There's a richness to the world of Bean Farm and a strong moral code that is timeless. . ."-- Los Angeles Times

3-0 out of 5 stars A Mild, but Pleasing, Freddy
Sometimes Mr. Brooks was able to come up with excellent titles for his novels; "Freddy and the Ignormus" will arouse anyone's curiousity, and "Wiggins for President" fairly jumps off the shelf. On the other hand, sometimes he wasn't; a neophyte reader discovering the title "Freddy and Mr. Camphor" on the library shelf might forgivably be tempted to shove it back in. Luckily, the book is stronger than the title.

"Freddy and Mr. Camphor" features two story lines; the primary involves Freddy becoming caretaker of a large estate and facing off against two sets of old enemies, the subsidiary involves insects pitching in to protect Victory gardens from themselves. The two stories are not tied together in any particular way, and do not represent Brooks at his best, but are certainly pleasant. Freddy fans will be pleased to see both Simon and The Winches, and Freddy's new friends, a pair of difficult hoptoads, are most amusing.

5-0 out of 5 stars Freddy Takes Care
It is hard to imagine it happening to Freddy the Pig, but gradually his busy life as pig, poet, banker, detective, and newspaperman was wearing him out. Even his good friend Jinx the Cat could see that Freddy needed a change. But Freddy didn't see how he could leave all his responsibilities. Finally, his salvation came in the form of a help wanted advertisement for a caretaker at the estate of the wealthy Mr. Jimson Camphor.

The job seemed perfect. Freddy got to live on a houseboat while he guarded the grounds and mowed the expansive lawn. If it hadn't been for a chance meeting with Waldo and Elmo, a pair of dejected hoptoads, Freddy would have thought he was in heaven. But the toads reveal that all is not well. Simon the Rat and his clan have moved into the Camphor attic and, in a fit of random destructiveness, have chewed away the faces on the portraits that are stored there.

Nor is that the worst of it. Mrs. Winch, the housekeeper, turned out to be the estranged wife of Zebedee Winch and his son Horace, whom the reader may remember from Freddy's trip to Florida, where he gave the animals no end of problems. This time is no different. Freddy is locked up, a plot is hatched against him and Mr. Camphor returns to find Freddy accused of vandalism and theft. A dejected Freddy returns to the Bean Farm, determined to undo the damage.

Of course, things are not perfect on the farm either Webb the Spider is on a campaign to convince the insects that they should abstain from eating the Victory Gardens that are providing extra food for the war effort. He is opposed by Zero, the anarchist horsefly, and appeals to Freddy for help. Certainly, a pig's work is never done.

Somehow, of course, all is made right, but it takes all of Freddy's ingenuity, the cooperation of the farm animals, and even an array of militant fleas to bring all the culprits to justice. In the world of the Bean Farm, teamwork, friendship, and an honest determination to do the right thing are the tools that make the difference. As always, Brooks' lessons are painless fun. He displays a touch for gentle yet satirical caricature that cannot help but please both his younger audience and us doddering, older readers who remember the days before noir fiction and, like Freddy, occasionally need to take a break

5-0 out of 5 stars Two foretrotters up for Freddy and Mr. Camphor!
Long after Walter Brooks has earned his eternal reward, he ismaking a paradise here on earth for fans of Freddy! Freddy andMr. Camphor is one of the best Freddy's out there. If you don't love Freddy, you'll love Mr. Camphor. If you don't love Mr. Camphor, there's always Bannister to adore. If not Bannister, well, there's Mrs. Wiggins, or Jinx, or the Webbs, or cousin Augustus and his relatives. One thing is certain, you won't leave this book without a new friend. Walter Brooks does for the animal kingdom what PG Wodehouse does for humankind by creating a happy fantasyland where nothing ever goes so wrong that it can't be undone, and it is always undone with wit and sagacity. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Entertaining and Educational
I read this book many times and recommended it as a Children's Librarian. This book is great for the young and the young and heart. I will never tire of this book. Bernard Most captures the way humans can act to someone who has just one thing different from his or her peers through the animals. The book shows that everyone may not be alike, but is to be accepted. This is great how the cow becomes friends with a pig that has a similiar problem to his own. This is a great book, especially for Toddlers.

5-0 out of 5 stars My daughter absolutely *loves* this book
My wife stumbled upon Bernard Most's books at a Zany Brainy store closing sale. She bought "Oink Ha!" and our daughter (2 years old) loved it. So from the description of this book, I bought it for her. It has now become her favorite book!

She thinks it's funny for a cow to oink and a pig to moo! And she loves the sounds they both make while learing to moo/oink (oinomoo, moink! ;0).

Bernard Most really has our daughter's number. He's a favorite around our house.

5-0 out of 5 stars wonderful barnyard humor
I would like to thank the author for creating a terrific picture book which is a surefit hit every time I read it to a group of kids. As a children's librarian, I have a few titles that are always winners, and this is definitely one of them! The children always respond to this silly story with its great barnyard sounds as the cow and pig try to learn the new "words" oink and moo. And it has a nice lesson about persevering, which is an added bonus. Fun stuff!

5-0 out of 5 stars So much fun!
My 3 year old son laughs hysterically every time we read this book (and we read it a lot!). The cow (who only says Oink) tries to teach the pig to say oink and the pig (who only can say Moo) tries to teach the cow to say Moo. The funny combinations of MOO and OINK just crack him up. (MOINK, MOOK, OIMOO, etc.) The other animals make fun of them, but they get the last laugh. We get such a kick out of how much he loves it.

5-0 out of 5 stars A Delightful Must Have!
From a parent and kindergarten teacher's perspective, this is a fantastic book. It is one of our family's favorites. We laugh throughout the book each time we read it. Bernard Most's simple and clever use of language and illustrations makes it a classic to read over and over. I have recommended this book to many parents and teachers. It is also a wonderful book for pre and emergent readers to read with adults. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Truly a classic animal tale
Babe captured my heart, as he was trying to save his own skin. This book is truly a classic animal tale, where the creatures take on believable and human emotions and personalities. We see intelligence, fear, hope, and love, in a heartwarming pig, and his other animal friends. The inter-species bond between Babe and his human farmer is delightful! I have read it several times, and each time, see another angle, in this Pig-Shepherd memoir. Should not be limited to any age group, because adults as well as children will be entertained.

5-0 out of 5 stars The Best Sheep-pig Ever
When I read the book I thought it was great. I think that Babe set a good example because he never gave up.Babe is a pig that wants to be a sheep-dog.But since he is a pig he can't.But he still tried and his owner entered him in the sheep dog trials.I dont want to spoil the ending for youso that is all I have to say.

5-0 out of 5 stars Babe the best pig
I had to read Babe in school. I didn't think I'd like it but I really did. I think Babe is very nice. He was always kind to others and never tried to be mean in any way. He got people (sheep) to obey him by just being kind. I think people in the whole world should read Babe and try to be like him.

5-0 out of 5 stars A delightful book!
Dick King-Smith has written a real gem! He is a genius at characterization. We are immediately caught up in the contrasting characters of the farmer and his wife. She talks a blue streak with never a pause for breath and turns and twists at great length in long and convoluted sentences that take up half the page, question after question and answering most of them herself. One susinct word suffices her husband.

The animal characters are even more rich! The loving mother sheep-dog takes poor little piglet Babe under her "wing". Loving and kind though she may be to Babe, she is completely rude and disdainful towards the "stupid" sheep. Babe learns the power of truly respectful kindness, and totally surpasses the dog in being able to manage the sheep herd and bring out the best in them.

As a teacher, I believe this has a message for us. I've seen some "benevolent dictators" in my day, who treat students as simpletons and get as much. Kindness, respect, and assuming intelligence go a lot further!

5-0 out of 5 stars Comparable to Charlotte's Web
It's impossible to not compare Babe to Charlotte's Web because it is also about a pig that is trying to save its neck. Babe really holds up well against the classic work. Babe (which is very much like the movie that came from it) tells a marvelous story and also contains a lot of depth. The short book tells the story of a pig who decides to become a sheep-dog (or sheep-pig). King-Smith relates humorous, exciting, and touching episodes of the pig's life until the novel reaches a splendid climax at the National Sheep-Dog Trials. The novel does have quite a bit to say about life. It speaks to overcoming traditional boundaries as Babe becomes a sheep-pig. The novel speaks to how fellow beings should be treated. Perhaps most importantly, Babe: The Gallant Pig speaks ... as Babe learns to treat the "stupid" animals (this is what they were known as prior to Babe) like sheep and ducks with politeness and friendship. Babe: The Gallant pig has a lot to say (particularly to children) and tells a great story. It certainly ranks among the top works of children's literature. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Twist & Ernest will bring a smile to your face!
Twist & Ernest is a book that will bring a smile to your face whether you are a child or adult. I could not wait to share it with my girls. We each have our favorite part, but we all agree Ernest is adorable. The story reminds us that everyone has something special to bring to a friendship, a friend can be found in anyone and true friendship is a wonderful thing.

5-0 out of 5 stars "Children will fall in love with the magic of Ernest!"
This is a wonderful story about friendship that captures the importance of accepting each other regardless of our differences. Children will fall for the determined little donkey, Ernest, as he gives the stubborn horse, Twist, a great life lesson in love and friendship. My 6 and 3 year old boys have taken these two characters into their imaginary worlds and now create their own adventures that take place on the farm. The illustrations are masterful and real, yet cuddly enough to capture the attention of pre-reading youngsters. The text is to the point and interesting as the story unfolds. You'll find yourself rooting for the donkey from the outset and when he finds success, you feel the warmth of the bond the two characters have discovered. We hope that there will be more work from this wonderful new author and look forward to reading more about our new friends, Twist & Ernest! ... Read more

It's springtime, and Farmer Brown is shearing his sheep: "Clip-clip,buzz-buzz, / He took their wool and left them fuzz." Naked, the pink-cheekedsheep begin to shiver as the temperature drops. They watch in dismay when FarmerBrown gathers up the bags of wool to deliver to Mr. Greene, who cleans and cardsit. "'BAAA!' they cried. 'We want it back!'" But their bleating is to no avail.Farmer Brown continues on his rounds, visiting the yarn spinner and the dyerbefore he finally realizes that his poor lambs are frigidly following him. Hescurries back to his farm and sets to work--knitting each one a bright, colorfulsweater!

The third in the Farmer Brown series, after Farmer Brown Goes Round andRound and The Thing ThatBothered Farmer Brown, this "yarn about wool" is as charmingly silly asits predecessors. Children can learn about the process of turning wool into theyarn that becomes the sweaters on their backs, while sympathizing with thesomewhat ineffective sheep who must become all tangled up in yarn beforeclueless Farmer Brown catches on to their plight. However, never let it be saidthat Farmer Brown doesn't have a heart. His magnanimous solution to the sheep'ssituation teaches a perfectly palatable lesson in thoughtfulness. 5-0 out of 5 stars Super great!
This tale of Farmer Brown has quickly become one of our family favorites. My two year-old loves the rhyming text, and my six year-old enjoys knowing how the wool is made into yarn and eventually into clothing. Also, as a teacher, it is wonderful to have such an educational book with interesting, rhyming text. We are looking forward to new adventures with Farmer Brown!

5-0 out of 5 stars From Sheep to Sweater and back to Sheep
This book is just wonderful. My 3 year-olds love it. It's silly and entertaining and also educational. If anyone in your family is a knitter, spinner or weaver buy it for them (no matter how old they are). It's a great book for grandparents who knit, etc. to share with little ones.In this time when we are more and more removed from the land this book does a great job of showing children how the sweater came to be on their back. You just can't go wrong with this one.

5-0 out of 5 stars Amusing, great for little ones.
This is a great book for 3-5 year olds. Everything rhymes, so it's fun to read and the "plot" is even better! The farmer shears his sheep, has it washed, carded, made into yarn and dyed. All the while, his sheep are chasing after him, wanting their wool back! Finally, the farmer knits them "brightly-colored cardigans" and from then on, the sheep can't wait to be sheared. If only life were that simple.... :)

5-0 out of 5 stars Farmer Brown Teaches Us Again
Not only is our favorite farmer up to many new adventures--this time fighting with sheep shearing, but this book is a great way to introduce young readers to the literary term "onomatopoeia". With the buzzes, clips, and host of animal noises, the term can be easily explained with a favorite character. This book shares what I love about all Teri Sloat's books, they are well written with great imagery and the pictures are excellent! ... Read more

Daisy is one darling duckling. But she does have a problem staying close to Mama Duck during their watery wanderings. "Come along, Daisy!" is the refrain of this simple, engaging picture book, as Mom tries to keep her distracted daughter under her wing: "But Daisy was bouncing on the lily pads." After all, Daisy has other fish to spy ... and frogs to play with. When "something big" stirs beneath her, and something screeches in the sky above, however, the dilly-dallying duckling hides in the reeds, shivering. What could that scary reed rustling be? Preschoolers will be delighted to discover it's only Mama Duck, once again asking her Daisy to come along.Jane Simmons's bold, bright illustrations are not only adorable, they are artfully composed. Youngsters ages 3 and older will be charmed and comforted by this sweet read-aloud about a mother's gentle protection.(Baby to preschool) --Karin Snelson ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars mother of a 2 1/2 year old
This book has been a favorite of my daugher's since she was 18 months old. She loves all the Daisy stories by Jane Simmons and requests them almost every night. The author has a wonderful way of making the story exciting for this age group. Her illustrations are marvelous. This book is a "must have" for all toddlers!

4-0 out of 5 stars Daisy is delightful
Daisy is a lovely little duck, winsomely illustrated... and she just can't help exploring her world. As a result, she loses track of her momma. When she discovers her loss, she becomes fearful. The author has managed to portray the isolation of the little duck and the dangers around her in a very simple but vivid way. Happily, Daisy is united with her momma after a few pages; however, enough time lapses that my 2 year old son beomes anxious about Daisy and her predictament. We cannot read the text as written and we focus on the happy reunion at the end. Even then, he goes on and on (for hours) about "Daisy stay close to momma" as he clutches my hand.

If your child does not demonstrate any separation anxiety, this book will be probably be great for him or her at any age. However, you may want to wait until your child is old enough to be comfortable with the content before you read this book (unlike us). As Jane Simmons' illustrations of this little duck are not to be missed, check out her other books if you have concerns about this one.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great story, good lesson, fun read!
This is such a great book for little ones. My 3 year old has enjoyed this book for quite some time now. There is a good lesson for Daisy (and your little ones) in that she learns not to wander from Mama Duck; something little 1-3 year olds are often learning themselves. The illustrations are lovely, and draw in the reader. My daughter is very interested in how things work out for little Daisy. I have even been called "Mama Duck" from time to time when she is snuggling up close, an endearing nickname my daughter picked up from this book. Very cute.
Jane Simmons has a way of keeping her stories simple enough for the little ones, yet interesting enough for the reader to read again and again. Nice work!

5-0 out of 5 stars Beautiful
These books are a pleasure to read and to look at !

This series of books are the favourite with my 9 month old daughter and me ! We have been enjoying these books for about four months now. I even recite them to my little girl when we are out walking to squeals of delight.

I have borrowed a lot of books from the library, so you could say I have done a lot of "road testing". I find the Daisy series to be in a different league to everything else. The illustrations in the Daisy series are delightful and the words are like poetry.

5-0 out of 5 stars We LOVE Daisy!
My two boys, 3 years and 15 months, absolutely adore this book. In fact, The little guy saw a Daisy picture in the art section at Target and went crazy until I figured out what he wanted. So now a picture of Daisy hangs in his bedroom. It was my first clue that there was more than one Daisy book. Now we are buying them all. We read this one about ten times a day! ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Small Pig
I thought this book was very funny but I still felt bad for the poor little pig who got stuck in the sidewalk, thinking it was mud. This book was very enjoyable and I recamend it for ages 6-9 year old children. This book teaches you that you shouldn't sit in wet concrete.

5-0 out of 5 stars Small Pig is excellent
This book appeals to both kids and adults because, along with the great, whimsical illustrations and easy-to-read words, the book also has all the elements of a great story. The irony of the farmer's wife vacuuming up a pigpen and of a pig getting stuck in cement are precious; there's just enough tasty sarcasm to make you grin as you read. My favorite line is when the farmer pulls over to ask what's going on, and the man replies, "Oh, nothing. Just a pig stuck in the sidewalk." Classic. The small pig's expressions are priceless; Lobel has great character development. Superior book.

4-0 out of 5 stars Small Pig
It's funny because the pig gets stuck in mud. The mom sucks the mud up with the vacuum cleaner. The pig runs away. The turtle bites the pig. The pig looks for mud.The pig is scared of the vacuum cleaner. The pig is cute because he has a bow on him. I like the book.

5-0 out of 5 stars I love Small Pig!
My sister and I have been fighting over who gets to keep thisbook for years now. Our grandmother used to read it to us when we'dvisit on Sunday afternoons. We still know the whole story by heart! This book is great-I love when the pig "sits down, and sinks down into the good, soft, mud"!

5-0 out of 5 stars A lifetime favorite, great story, even better illustrations
I first read Small Pig in 2nd grade... 25 years later, it's still my all-time favorite children's book. I've told friends about it and even though I haven't seen the book in years, I can still vividly remember the expression on the pig's face when he got stuck in the cement. As a learning disabled child (undiagnosed at the time, but I knew that reading was a chore nonetheless), I found the book not only easy to read, but I was in love with the expressive illustrations of the pig. An absolutely adorable character. It's a parable in many ways to the way a child feels when they don't get their way. The farmer and his wife loved this pig very much and it's obvious in the telling of the story. It's short enough to read as a bed-time story to your kids and even the "scary" parts are brief and even humorous. If more stars were available, I would add them. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Colors and Shapes.
Using vibrant colors and die-cuts this book creates the visages of various farm animals. The book appeals to babies and young toddlers and introduces them to various shapes and colors. The die-cuts used to create the various animals are brilliantly conceived. The youngest children at the day care always liked flipping through this book; the color combination really catches one's attention.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great starter book!
Toddlers love this book because of the vibrant colors. Very young children also enjoy turning pages in books so one-word pages are great. This book is also useful when teaching shapes and colors.

5-0 out of 5 stars My favorite, my childrens favorite.
This book is wonderful - it has my 3 and 4 year old girls rolling with laughter. They know all the rhymes and and sometimes say them before me.

We have had it almost a year and they still want to read it all the time. Fortunately it reads aloud so well that I am happy to oblige.

5-0 out of 5 stars Fix-It Duck
A great read-aloud for preschool through 2nd grade (at least). I love the way Jez Alborough has used the pages so creatively by varying the drawing "frames" and the text "boxes." Kids will love how Duck fearlessly bumbles through trying to fix one thing and then another, making things worse and worse. The tension builds throughout the book until the surprise ending. Make sure you carefully examine the two-page spreads at the beginning and end of the book. The first sets the stage for what's to come, and the last one gives closure to the story. It reminds me of WATCH OUT, BIG BRO' IS COMING! by the perspective used in the pictures, and the surprise ending.

5-0 out of 5 stars Watch Out...Here Comes Fix-It Duck.....
"Plop! goes the drip that drops in the cup. Duck looks down and Duck looks up. A leak in the roof. Oh, what bad luck! This is a job for...FIX-IT DUCK." Now, how to fix that roof. It's way too high to reach, so he drives over to his friend, Sheep's house to borrow a ladder. While there, he hears a "rattle, creak, and squeak." Sheep's window is stuck. Never fear...this is a job for Fix-It Duck. "He does what he can to close up the gap. He glues it, screws it, and gives it a tap." SMASH..... And so begins an entertaining chain of events story that will have little ones giggling as Fix-It Duck causes one mishap after another while trying to "help" his friends. Jez Alborough's lilting, rhyming text is engaging, and filled with energy, rhythm, and humor. Bold, bright, and busy cartoon artwork adds just the right touch to this hilarious misadventure, and sharp readers will notice the source of Duck's leaky roof trouble on the endpapers and title page (a running bathtub faucet), and will revel in the fact that they're in on the joke. Perfect for preschoolers, Fix-It Duck is a wonderful, manic romp that begs to be shared and read aloud, and a terrific sequel to Mr Alborough's Duck In The Truck. ... Read more
