5-0 out of 5 stars go tim egan
this is a great book my favorite of them. I know him my parents are friend with him

5-0 out of 5 stars Visually entertaining with a story and look we grew up with
Tim Egan's books always seem to tickle a spot in me that remind me of stories and great times I had growing up. My niece HAD to have this book read every night for several months. It became so much her favorite that she brought it to school for favorite author show and tell. Now, my 2 year old has discovered it with its array of comical animals. He always laughs, especially at the antics of the duck. A sure fire winner with great moral lessons.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent Childrens Book With A good Moral to the Story

5-0 out of 5 stars my childhood as a book!
This was my all-time-favorite book growing up as a child--I literally read it until it was falling apart at the seams. I loved the wry humor of it and they way that it didn't "talk down" to kids, like a lot of other children's books in the seventies (as I remember them, anyway). When my mother and I learned it was going out of print (this was probably the late eighties), my mom bought all the copies she could find, and kept them in her closet to give to the young children her nieces and nephews kept having. And I think there is still the last copy hidded away in that closet for my as-yet-unborn child. I searched for it here on a lark, and I am so happy to see it back in print for a whole other generation to enjoy!! I definitely be buying copies for all the children of my friends!

5-0 out of 5 stars I LOVE THIS BOOK!!
I checked this book out so many times from the school library when I was little, that the librarian asked my parents to buy me a copy so that other kids could have a chance to check it out. The cats , by far, were my favorite part, especially MAX! If you know a child that likes animals, this is the book to get them!! It's fun, has great pictures, great humor, and is just my all around favorite book of my childhood!

5-0 out of 5 stars My favorite book for 20 something years.....now my son's too
I was 3 years or so when my mom starting reading me this book. It's one of the most memorable events of my childhood. Now my book is falling apart but my son, who is almost 4, can say every line with me. It is so charming and funny. Tonight I sat down to try and find a replacement for my old book and was delighted to find it on Amazon. All my friends want it for their children too. I hope Alice and Martin know who much it means to all of us. Thanks and keep it for generations

5-0 out of 5 stars Fondest Childhood Memories-Mine and Passed Down
This is the most memorable book of my childhood and adult life. I read it countless times as a child, and kept it safe until I was able to share this wonderful creation with my niece, Phylicia, and nephew, Mark. As a child, living in the country, books were all I had, and this one kept me content for hours. In turn, Fee and Mark grew to love it as it covered every animal they had been exposed to in their short lives. It gave them insight into the animal's personalities, how to treat them, how to care for them. They got to imagine having these types of pets of their own, and it made for many creative days for the three of us, reading and learning together.

3-0 out of 5 stars Reacuring Nightmares
This was my absolute favorite book as a young girl. I must have spent thousands of hours just looking over each characteristic of each animal. I used to have the same nightmare over and over as a child. It involved a mean, bad..., billy goat with red eyes. I haven't looked at this book for 5 minuets and 11 years. I just realized where my nightmares came from. It has been a phsycological breakthrough. Sam the Billy Goat. As I went on reading the book, now a full grown adult, there is some questions that raised about the evil characteristics of some of the animals. All I can say is beware...childrens books are powerful...ex: Where the Wild things are...enough rambling... ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Excellent book for readers intruged to learn about horses
Very good book, I own it. Excellent information at hand at any time. Origins, colors, uses and more of each breed. Just not enough color and I think it is a bit too long written for younger riders and horse lovers alike. Otherwise it would have gotten five stars for older enthusiasts but four is quite well overall.

5-0 out of 5 stars Loved it as a kid and still do!
I remember coming across this book in my school library when I was about 10 or 11 and being enchanted with Wesley Dennis' beautiful paintings, as well as the little stories Mrs. Henry told of each breed. Some are condensations of her other books, like Misty of Chincoteague and King of the Wind. Very informative, as they don't simply tell you dry facts but bring each breed to life in the context of a particular time and place. Definitely recommend it & any of Mrs. Henry's books to horse-crazy kids or adults!

5-0 out of 5 stars Album of Horses
Excellent book by Marguerite Henry and the work of illustrator, Wesley Dennis is still wonderful and fresh after all these years. I loved this book when I was a child, I love this book now. I am happy to be able to share it with my grandchildren.

5-0 out of 5 stars Another great Marguerite Henry Book
Marguerite Henry makes learning about horses a joy in this book. The illustrations by Wesley Dennis are just wonderful. Having been a horse crazy girl long ago, I can say that this would be a hit for any little girl who loves horses. This is a book that both adults and children can enjoy together.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great reference tool
My very first chickens are 2 months old now, and I've referred back to this book countless times, for help with making brooder boxes, when to remove the heat lamp, buying feeders/waterers, making our coop, treating diarrhea, when to switch feeds, how to tell a cockerel from a pullet (!), to find out if panting in 90-degree weather is normal (it is), etc., etc. It may be written for kids, but it is not condescending. I appreciate the practical and have-fun approach. I just read about the different chicken sounds, and learned that the cool sound my hens make when they're happy is called "singing." Get the book!

4-0 out of 5 stars Great book for children
This book is easy to read. I thought it was helpful even for the adult beginner. A great book for a child/parent project, 4-H or school raising chicks. 4 stars because I had to explain many of the words used to my child.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great advice for the novice wanting to raise chickens
Raising healthy chickens is a new experience for most kids today. Buying a few eggs to hatch or getting a couple of cute chicks at Easter is easy, but what happens when they start to get bigger! We know they eat and poop a lot but how do we help them survive to the point where they can actually lay an egg? What do you feed them? Where do you keep them? Can a chicken really make a good pet? You'll find answers to all these and many more questions in this wonderfully written and easy to understand book about raising chickens. Gail Damerow must have raised more than just a few birds because she demonstrates a solid understanding of the common and not-so-common issues facing the rural or urban chicken farmer ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars A lovely, quietly charming book about fatherhood
You could hardly do better than to get "The Little Green Goose" for any father, whether adoptive or biological. Adele Sansone's text is a miracle of economy, covering parenthood, adoption, geneaology, and more with a minimum of fuss and text.

The barnyard goose decides that he wants to be a father, but as he has no wife or other partner, he decides to adopt a spooky looking green egg found by the dog at the edge of a field. The goose settles himself on top of the eggs and waits and waits. When the egg finally cracks open, what emerges is some sort of lizard or dinosaur or who knows what--but it definitely is not a goose. Still, Sansone's goose dad utterly ignores the differences between himself and his new son and makes a natural (and skillful) parent. When the "green goose" decides to try to figure out what his real background is, he has little luck and ends up coming home to the goose--who, after all, is the only parent he's ever known.

The illustrations, by Alan Mark, are utterly charming. The "green goose" is splotched and splashed with color, while the goose is drawn sparingly and convincingly. This is, overall, a fun tale with subtle and valuable life lessons.

5-0 out of 5 stars a story of adoption that did not forget the story!
Wonderful book covering so many subjects in a short entertaining time. Father goose longs for a child, and adopts a very strange egg. After the little green goose is born, the baby chicks tease saying thats not really your mommy, you dont look anything alike. The little green goose goes around trying to find out who he looks like and then becomes lonely and returns home, realizing home is where you are loved. Great book for adoptive fathers. Also for those involved in transracial adoption. The story illustrates a fathers love and caring, the idea that families do not need to look alike, and all this is done with a tale that is good for its own sake. The illustrations are superb, my favorite is the final one, this great big green dinosaur-like creature (the little green goose) with the father goose laying on top of his head, one wing stretched out protectively over his child and both fast asleep. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Just a reaally nice book
A terribly fun book about individuality. It's about a dad so worried about what other people think and say about how he raises his boy that, he tries to persuade his son Elmer to do 'masculine' things like play baseball instead of bake or paint. But not every boy likes to play baseball (nor every girl bake) and though an outcast Elmer stays true to himself and amazes everyone with his unique abilities and insights. It's a predictable but beautiful tale, written by an author experienced in being unique and being true to that uniqueness (brilliant actor, gay-rights-activist Harvey Fierstein). I find any book written form experience is a book worth reading, a book which speaks form the heart and 'The Sissy Duckling' is no exception. I would even go so far as to say that this book, like many other children's books'The Little Prince by St.Antoine and The Butterfly by Jay Singh'is written for adults. Absolutely. It has a lot to say to people from all walks of life. A great book to read to your kids, to discuss in class, or give to someone terribly original who might need a little pick-me-up! Very pleased with this book!

5-0 out of 5 stars More Like the Sassy Duckling
The Sissy Duckling is a fabulous children's book. I write this glowing review not just because I am a fan of the supremely talented actor and author, Harvey Fierstein, but because the book is genuinely good.

The story of Elmer, the different, special ducking is unique. It is funny and touching.

Anyone who has ever had a son that was different from the other boys, a son who preferred dress-up to football, baking to Pokemon, will appreciate this book.

My son does not play football or rough and tumble sports. He would rather read about knights or pirates or Napoleon. He would rather dress up as a Ninja or King than kick a soccer ball. He is not like the other boys his age --- he is more sensitive and compassionate. He is fiercly loyal and terribly creative.

If you have a unique, special little guy in your life, this is the book for him.

Oh, and I like to think of Elmer as Sassy - willing to fly his own course - rather than Sissy.

3-0 out of 5 stars NOT QUITE RIGHT
I feel rather bad giving this book only 3 stars. I find the
story enjoyable, even wonderful. And I love the
illustrations. My problem with the book stems from the fact
that the lesson to be learned comes from some sort of heroics on
the sissy duck's part.

Within my extended family and within the family of my best friend
there are kids who are very different - one physically, one
mentally. The chances of their doing something really heroic is
as slim as it is for the rest of us. So will they be relegated
forever to be the butt of some kids' jokes and pranks on the
school grounds. Do they need to think less of themselves
because they cannot accomplish something very special that will
change the minds of the world about their right to an accepted
place in society.

This is an extremely difficult subject, one that does not
appear to be coming even close to being resolved. But I do hope
that kids do not come away with the message that it is up to
them alone to solve the problem, and that if they fail, it is
all their fault.

1-0 out of 5 stars WAKE UP AND SMELL THE COFFEE PEOPLE!
This cute little book by gay activist Fierstein is another veiled attempt to maneuver homosexuality into the mainstream. Of course there are boys who are not athletic, who prefer to cook, read, plant flowers, etc. There is nothing wrong with this. Fact is that the amount of testosterone created within any individual boy influences his aggressiveness and preferences dramatically. Doesn't necessarily mean he is gay, just more introspective. But I draw the line at encouraging young boys to dress up in their mom's clothing and high heels. This creates confusion and gender identity problems which will lead to much worse than teasing from other kids. Parents should talk with their boys about all their interests - open communication is imperative. However, caring parents should lead their kids away from an active homosexual lifestyle - not toward one.

2-0 out of 5 stars Bad choice of words
I guess I'm glad some "sissies" are loud and proud, but I have a problem with calling anyone a sissy. The book is amusing enough, but it leads to terrible stereotyping if children really take its message to heart. Basically, it says not only that it's okay to be gay (and I'm sure it is, because the media keeps telling me so), but then here's how you identify the gay people in your own neighborhood - boys who don't play sports well (or don't play at all), boys who dress up in mommy's clothing (as if mommy dresses in just frilly stuff these days), boys who like to cook (we would have starved in college if we hadn't figured out how to cook), et cetera et cetera. Oh, I get it - we're all sissies! Is that any way to treat your prospective customers, calling them sissies??? I think not. Quit calling me names, big-nose. ... Read more

2-0 out of 5 stars a bit much
My grandchildren really enjoy the Minnie and Moo books and I bought this one for them without really looking at it. I read it myself however, before reading it to them and was greatly disappointed by the references to the hamburgers as recently deceased acquaintances of Minnie and Moo. I have been a vegetarian for 13 years but do not feel it is appropriate to explain the reasons or images of slaughtering cows to my grandchildren before they are capable of handling this information. The story could have been just as much fun without the hamburger episode.

5-0 out of 5 stars Minnie and Moo Go Dancing
This is one of the funniest children's books I have run across in over 55 years of working with young readers! In the past year, I have seen one very solemn, shy, second grader read the book aloud to her class and, miracle upon miracle, become an out-going smiling child. During the same year, I have worked with a non-reading 5th grader, whose main ambition in life has become to be able to read Minnie and Moo Go Dancing on her own. AND, we are actually getting there! Thank you Denys Cazet!

1-0 out of 5 stars One of the worst
My husband and 5 yr. old daughter all agreed this was one of the rudest and most tasteless childrens' books we've ever read. Luckily we didn't waste a nickel on it...unfortunately the library did.

5-0 out of 5 stars One of the few easy reader books that's actually clever!
I got this adorable book for my kids -- but I think I like it even more than they do! It's for grades 1-3, so it's easy to read... but not simple-minded or boring like other early readers. My eight year old says, "This book is so funny! Minnie and Moo decide to go dancing, and there is a big mix-up with the cousins (humans!). I think every child should have this book -- THAT'S how funny it is. We also have "Minnie and Moo Go To The Moon" and that's just as good, too.

5-0 out of 5 stars This book is great!

Should definitley buy this book, if can afford it, should buy 2, one for the kid to play with, the other use to read it with him.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great book (but delicate!)
My 15 month old LOVES this book. I had never sung this song to her before we bought it but now it is a big favourite. She learned the words farmer and tractor from the book. She learned e-i-e-i-o. She loves the flaps, the pull tabs and the dials. However, she decapitated the three little pigs in the first few days and ripped the farmer right out of his tractor in another unattended moment with the book. I now give it to her only under supervision so I can protect its moving parts. I don't know at what age toddlers become less destructive. However, it seems like this book might be better for older toddlers, since the younger ones like mine will probably love it to pieces!

5-0 out of 5 stars E-I-E-I-O
E-I-E-I-O! Old McDonald Had a Farm brings to life the classic song through interactive, pop up cartoon pictures of a chugging tractor whose tires move, baaing sheep, clucking chicks, oinking pigs, and mooing cows who chew their cud and roll their eyes. Cony's use of pictures, which children can manipulate, adds zest to the experience of reading as children read (or sing along) to the tune of Old McDonald. It is a timeless song set apart by Cony's ingenious manipulation of the idea of a pop up children's book that will hold up to much use.

Book Description

It's bedtime on the farm, and Mother Hen is singing her chicks to sleep: "Gather round, my children, Cuddle as I sing, Let yourselves grow sleepy, Safe beneath my wing..." Mother Cow, too, begins to sing to her calf, and Horse, Pig, Sheep, and Goose all join in with their verses. To the farmer in his bed, it all sounds like so much clucking, mooing, neighing, and oinking...but to the animal babies, it's a beautiful lullaby. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars His constant favorite
My son just turned one yr old last week and this book has been his favorite for the last three months. "Goodnight Moon," is alright, and "If You Give a Mouse a Cookie" is a close second, but this one he loves. At first he would cuddle with me while I read it to him, but now that he is a little older he is determined to turn the pages himself. I have the paperback version and need to buy another copy as I've had to repair numerous pages while he learns how to turn paper pages. Poor book. I'd put it up until he's older, but he will look all over the living room for this one and then sit down in the middle of the floor and slowly "read" the book 2-3 times before he is ready for the next activity.

5-0 out of 5 stars The perfect lullaby
My 2 1/2 year old loves this book and song. The music is printed at the end - and it puts her right to sleep nearly every time. She sings the song whenever she is putting her animals to bed, and it is a lovely story! The illustrations are great for this age - I wholly recommend it!

5-0 out of 5 stars Great songs, story, and illustrations.
This is one of a few books that get the "again, again" rating from my 3 year old. He loves the song and story and of course the animals. If is running too long its easy to skip a couple of animals and get to the end w/o compromising the story.

4-0 out of 5 stars A Perfect Bedtime story book.
My two year old loves Barnyard Lullaby but can not resist closing her eyes to sleep as I read the last two lines on every-other page: "Go to sleep, my sweetheart, Tomorrow is a brand-new day". When we are not reading this story at bedtime, she loves to name the animals and make each one's sound. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Fun for parents and kids
It sounded kind of silly but we'd heard raves about this book series from one of our friends with a 2 year old so we ordered this one from Amazon. It is a well made (i.e. tough enough for tiny tots' hands) handsome little book. The story is simple enough, but the hook is that when you get to the part where each animal makes its sound, the page has a big hole where the animal's mouth is.You pick up the book, pushit against your lips and make the animal sound from the other side, pushing your lips through hole in the page. Our 3 year old son let out a huge peal of laughter to the first, and it kept his interest until the end. Then he demanded to hold the book and make the animal sounds. We're all getting better at the animal sounds and I can do a pretty mean cow now, if I do say so myself.

Highly recommended. Fun for all three of us. ... Read more

This book is great for the 3/4 year old. It's been one of my daughter's favorite since the day we received it. The animal noises are fun, but what seems to keep her interested is the emerging fox from out of the bushes. Ayear since we've been reading the book, she has it memorized and enjoysreading the book back to me with inflection and anticipation for the fox'sarrival. This is a great story time book as well.I've seen it keep 3-5 yearolds at the edge of their seat with the right librarian reading the story! ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Sweet book with a lesson
"Kiss the Cow" has become a favorite of my 2-year-old after a recent visit to my parent's house in VA. While there, we saw cows "up close and personal", although we did not kiss any! In this book, Annalisa is one of Mama May's many children; the most curious and most stubborn. After disobeying her mother, Annalisa milks Luella, the "magic" cow. She does not kiss her afterward, however, as is required to ensure future milk production. What happens next is a lesson in learning the consequences of your actions, without being preachy. Luella will not give milk again until Annalisa kisses her, which eventually happens after much cajoling by the children and Mama May. Phyllis Root's book "What Baby Wants" is cute, too.

5-0 out of 5 stars Pucker Up.....
"Mama May lived where the earth met the sky, and her house was as wide as the prairie. It needed to be. Mama May had so many children she couldn't count them all. Among Mama May's children was one called Annalisa. She wasn't the youngest, and she wasn't the oldest, but she was the most curious and the most stubborn..." Every morning Annalisa watched as Mama May milked their cow, Luella. First she sang her magic greeting song, and Luella gave Mama all the milk she needed for her many, many children. Then she sang her thank you song, and last, but not least, she gave Luella a kiss "right on the end of her velvety, brown nose." "Ughhh!" said Annalisa. "Imagine kissing a cow!" Annalisa watch the milking day in and day out, and wondered what it would be like. Finally she just had to find out for herself. She took her pail from the sandbox and ran down to the pasture. First she sang the greeting song, and Luella filled her pail with warm, sweet milk. Then she sang the thank you song. But when it was time to kiss the cow, Annalisa absolutely would not. The next day, when Mama May came to milk the cow, Luella was dry. No matter how much she sang and kissed, there was no milk for Mama May's children..... Phyllis Root's warm and engaging text is filled with wit and energy, and begs to be read aloud and shared. Will Hillenbrand's bright, expressive, and entertaining illustrations are filled with humor and playful, eye-catching detail. Together, word and art offer a preschool crowd-please that's sure to charm both young and old alike. With its happily-ever-after ending to set everything right once again, Kiss The Cow is a winner!

5-0 out of 5 stars very cute
This is a delightful new addition to my children's library. The illustrations are wonderfully fresh. The language is not too lengthy or involved, yet contains some wonderful descriptive references. For example, unless you are familiar with a dairy, you probably don't know that fresh cheese squeeks between your teeth. This is a book my two toddlers want to see again and again, and I can hardly wait to share it with my kindergarten class.
