5-0 out of 5 stars Fantastic!
My nine-month-old daughter LOVES Spot Goes to the Farm. She can lift all the flaps by herself. We love the board book edition -- it's so sturdy! This book is just plain fun! I can't recommend it enough!

5-0 out of 5 stars We love Spot
Spot the Dog books are a favourite with my girls. They love the simple stories that they can relate to (hiding, baking a cake, playing with others etc) and the lift-the-flaps always bring screams of delight even though we've read them many many times. As they grow I'm sure they'll be one of the books they learn to read with. The words are simple and the font easy to read. Lovely books to cuddle up with your children on your lap. They are also big enough to hold up and read to them as they sit in back seat on car trips.

5-0 out of 5 stars The best Spot book ever!
My baby and I love this Spot Lift the Flap book. Only this one and Where Is Spot is in this sturdy board addition. The farm animals are so cute! Spot goes out looking for baby animals and finds some pigglets and kittens. My favorite page is Spot in the duck pond looking for Duckling. My baby loves to lift-the-flaps and this book calms her down when she is fussy. One of the all time best baby books on the market to me!

5-0 out of 5 stars Make the spot books a part of your toddlers library!
Make the spot books a part of your toddlers library collection. These books are durable, quick and easy to read and the "lift the flap" aspect makes them perfect for toddlers to join in. In this book, Spot the dog and his dad are looking for baby animals on the farm. This is a theme that children enjoy. The pictures are large and colorful and the story is simple, yet entertaining. My toddler LOVES this book and yours is sure to love it too! ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Ferdinandus Taurus Excellent for Reviewing the Subjunctive
Ferdinandus Taurus is a great little book just for reading aloud in class. But for a review of the subjunctive primary and secondary sequences, it is truly outstanding. The students appreciate the repetitive vocabulary (like English versions of the Doctor Seuss books), for it means they are able to concentrate on the sequencing of the Latin subjunctive clauses with the indicative main clauses. The pictures, the story, and an increased interest in the subjunctive; it just doesn't get any better than this! ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars The crowing Chanticleer sings
Who would have thought that a Canterbury Tale would prove appropriate for children? Illustrator Barbara Cooney has adapted the "Nun's Priest's Tale" to picture book format, turning it into a tale that warns against flattery. I'm just glad she didn't think of adapting "The Wife of Bath" tale. Thank goodness for small favors, eh?

In this story a widow and her two daughters live by themselves in the countryside. The focus of the story rests squarely on their cocky (ha ha) rooster Chanticleer. A bird with a harem (the book flaps description, not mine) of seven hens, Chanticleer has a fairly restive life. One day, however, a sly fox comes with flattering words and tricks poor Chanticleer into closing his eyes. It is only through the rooster's quick thinking that he is able to escape the fox and get away.

I've never read the original tale, so I'm not certain how this story adds up against it. Needless to say, I found it a funny amalgamation of several Aesop stories. Flattery was always utilized by Aesop in ways similar to this tale. In fact, Chanticleer's escape from the fox is nothing so much as an alternate version of the old story about the fox and the crow with a hunk of cheese. Cooney's illustrations do much to help this tale along. Using gorgeous pen and ink drawings and selective sections of color, this books at times looks like nothing so much as a collection of cheery Edward Gorey prints. The tale is quick and clean and I imagine many children will be fond it this particular retelling. All in all, an enjoyable book.

5-0 out of 5 stars Chaucer's Tale Beautifully Told
Chanticleer and the Fox, an adaptation of the Nun's Priest's Tale, is a simple and delightful tale with a moral (or three) at the end. Chanticleer and the other characters learn about the dangers of failing to be watchful, talking when one should be silent, and trusting in flattery. Barbara Cooney's illustrations are simple and warm, yet she gives a glimpse of what life might have looked like for a family in the Middle Ages. The book is suitable for an early reader or for reading aloud to younger children, although older children and adults would enjoy it as well. If you want more Chaucer for older children, without the rhyme or Middle English, you might want to try The Canterbury Tales, Retold by Geraldine McCaughrean, Illustrated by Victor G. Ambrus. Some material in that book, however, might need some parental guidance for younger readers. Chanticleer and the Fox is appropriate for children of all ages.

4-0 out of 5 stars Great addition to children's literature collection
I have been looking for Newberry and Caldecott Award books for my 4 children and was happy to find this Caldecott Medal book from 1959. I love Barbara Cooney's "Miss Rumphius", and this adaptation of the Nun's Priest's Tale from Geoffrey Chaucer's "Canterbury Tales" was a delightful way to introduce my children to some classic literature. My girls got a glimpse of medieval times from the story and the illustrations, and I loved the simple way Barbara Cooney brought out the industry and economy of the poor widow as she takes care of her children, livestock and house. The pictures are precise and brilliant, but not overpowering. The description of Chanticleer elevates him from an ordinary rooster to a work of art. The story has the virtue of pointing out the folly of listening to flattery as well as the value of quick thinking on Chanticleer's part in a perilous situation. I didn't like the reference to trusting in dreams (nightmares), but felt I could incorporate it into a teaching point as I read it to my children. All in all, I am glad to add it to our collection. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars A family favourite!
I bought this for my second daughter when she was 10 months old, it quickly became her all time most loved book, and her 2 year old sister loved to read it with her. Now with a new baby in the family my now 2 year old and 3 1/2 year old still love it, and read along with it. They also now know to find the reason that their little brother is crying - does he want to play, feed, sleep etc. It is easy to read, discuss and involve your children in.

5-0 out of 5 stars WONDERFUL!
I love this book and so does my 19mo old daughter. We read it before every nap and at bedtime too. She will ask for it by name. The illustrations are beautiful and the story is so cute. It is a great book for kids who have younger siblings as it helps to explain why a baby cries and how parents respond. I highly recommend this book!

5-0 out of 5 stars We love it!
My 2 1/2 year old daughter and I checked this book out from our library, and I am now buying her a copy of her own. She LOVES it! I have the story memorized, so when my daughter gets fussy in the car, I just start reciting the book, boo hooing like crazy, and she cracks up every time. It's a great book!

5-0 out of 5 stars This a wonderful board book!
This book is one of my 11 month-old daughters favorite. She has loved it for the last 4 Months and is even now trying to imitate the sounds of the animals in the book. It is really easy to read with limited words and sounds so the baby is not bored. My daughter can pay attention through the whole book.

5-0 out of 5 stars A wonderful book for babies and toddlers
I was surprised to see the age range listed as 4 - 8. This is clearly a board book for babies. My 8-month-old sits through it happily and it's quickly become MY favorite book (hers is Brown Bear). The illustrations are adorable. The animals gestures are the perfect touch. Any parent with a boo hoo baby will fall in love with this book. ... Read more

Fell upon a farmer's lawn,

5-0 out of 5 stars Destined to become a bedtime classic!
Have you memorized Goodnight Moon? I have. And I read Owl Moon until I could hoot with the best of them too. But, beautiful as these books are, I was looking for something else to suggest when my two daughters (ages 6 and 2) screamed, "Goodnight Moon!" for the hundredth time. I found it. When Moon Fell Down is the perfect rhyming bedtime story. In lovely prose:

"The rye smelled sweet; the night winds whirled, circling moon in a misty wreath; And he gazed in awe at the wonderous world, the sky above and the earth beneath . . ."

When Moon Fell Down tells what would happen if the moon came down to earth one night. What would he see, and how would he see it? Sometimes soothing, sometimes surprising, this book's melodic text and dreamy artwork brings a smile to my children's faces and a tear to my eye.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent!
When Moon Fell Down is one of the most lyrical books I've read lately. Smith's words have a musical quality about them, and when you read them out loud, they give satisfaction both to the tongue and to the ear. There's also a wonderful playfulness to the story. This one is going to be a classic.

5-0 out of 5 stars A Lovely Bedtime Adventure.....
"When moon fell down one night.../Fell upon a farmer's lawn,/Rolled about in sheer delight/On fields he'd only shined upon." So begins Linda Smith's lovely picture book about a night the moon fell to earth. Having seen everything from only above for so long, the moon is eager to see the world from another vantage point. "He'd never seen the trunks of trees/Or blades below the farmer's plow./Moon didn't know a horse had knees,/But things were strangely sideways now." Moon meets up with a friendly cow and travels the night away on a delightful adventure through this small farming town, until at dawn a perturbed farmer sends both back where they belong. "Moon! he cried. This isn't right!/Cow, how dare you roam!/A moon belongs in the sky at night,/And a cow belongs at home."..... Ms Smith's evocative, rhyming text is soft, soothing and full of imagery and magic and beautifully complemented by Kathryn Brown's subdued, detailed and expressive artwork. Together, they've authored a charming bedtime story the entire family will share and enjoy, again and again. Perfect for youngsters 3-7, When Moon Fell Down is a treasure and a book that's sure to become a classic in the years ahead.

5-0 out of 5 stars I AM OVER THE MOON!
When Moon Fell Down, he could have had any kind of adventure on earth. But instead, he chooses to spend this one special night with a friendly cow, in a small town, looking at the world through a whole different perspective. As author Smith notes, "He'd never seen the trunks of trees/Or blades below the farmer's plow/ Moon didn't know a horse had knees/ But things were strangely sideways now." Not since Eugene Fields wrote Wynken, Blinken, and Nod have I read such lyrical text! At the end of Moon and Cows night of adventure, the farmer sets things straight, "Cow ran off to the bran to fret/ Moon rose above the town/ But niether one would ever forget/The night when Moon Fell Down." Brown's soft watercolors compliment Smith's soft text to create a book that feels organic and huggable. Perfect for bedtime!

5-0 out of 5 stars Sheer Delight!
This is one of those rare children's books which is absolutely perfect in every way, starting with the rhyme, guaranteed to bring a smile. The tale of Moon's adventure on earth begins: "Moon fell down one night/Fell upon a farmer's lawn/Rolled about in sheer delight/On fields he'd only shined upon." Moon quickly appreciates the wonders of his new point of view, having never seen the trunks of trees nor encountered horses' knees. When the farmer's cow hitches a golden ride on Moon, together they paint the town, arriving home to face the agitated farmer: "'Moon!'" he cried. "'This isn't right!/Cow, how dare you roam!/A moon belongs in the sky at night/And a cow belongs at home.'" Kathryn Brown's illustrations provide just the right blend of softness and whimsy to ensure this book a place on the classics shelf and in every child's heart. ... Read more

Book Description

A beautifully illustrated story of the Nativity

He was just an ordinary donkey, but on his back he carried a miracle. He carried the Virgin Mary to Bethlehem on the night she gave birth. Along the way he dreamed he was carrying a city, a ship, a fountain, and a rose. He dreamed he was carrying a lady full of heaven--and he was. Barbara Helen Berger's glowing artwork and lyrical text perfectly convey the beauty and majesty of the story of the Nativity.

"Like the Christmas message itself, this is simple enough for young listeners to understand yet full of complexities for older children and adults to ponder."--Booklist, starred review

5-0 out of 5 stars A poetic story of the Savior's birth
What a beautiful story. It is very moving. I highly recommend it.

5-0 out of 5 stars A Story For Everyone
I decided to write this review because I love this book very much, I love this author/illustrator's beautiful work and I love this timeless mythological story. People say and rightfully so that this book tells the story of the night of Christ's birth. One of the reasons that I love this book is that it tells this familiar story that actually predates Christ by centuries without ever once using the well-known names of Bethlehem, Mary, Joseph or Jesus. You see, it is told from the perspective of the humble little donkey that carried the Mother who was pregnant with Her Son. A little donkey would know nothing of names, nothing of salvation, nothing of the doings of kings or priests or tax collectors. By telling the tale from this humble perspective no one is excluded from it's sweet and graceful message. I am a Pagan and at Winter Solstice or Yule I celebrate the Goddess's labor and delivery of her beautiful Son/Sun, the light, the sacrificial king who comes to renew the world, as the wheel of the year turns from it's dark half unto it's light half. The message of hope and life that the returning and growing rays of the sun promise to the sleeping earth fills my heart with gladness. I begin to anticipate spring and I renew my faith in the wisdom and love of the Earth's cycle.
The pictures in this book are exceedingly beautiful and tell the tale of the little donkey's dreams as he walks along. He doesn't know that he is carrying the hope of the world on his back, but he feels the magic in his dreams and thinks of a magnificent city glowing with promise, a huge rose glowing with softness and beauty, a fountain that waters the desert and brings the barren world to life with lush plants, and a sailing ship that carries him over the waters on his path. Like all good myths this story is timeless and transcultural. The symbols of one path speak the same language as others. The text is surrounded by lovely blue forget-me-nots on many pages and I think it is a gentle reminder to everyone to remember the inclusive message of the Winter Solstice and of Christmas that sees us all as one, bravely and faithfully facing the darkness together with hope in our spirits and love in our hearts. Ms. Berger uses a wonderful jewel-like blue color in many of the illustrations and it evokes a serene and peaceful feeling that adds to the overall message of the pictures. The Queen of Heaven is draped in the softly glowing folds of a starry sky and her little baby son gives off a gentle glow in her arms. The story is so gentle and humble. I love this book because it tells a story that belongs to the whole world and it doesn't make anyone feel left out.

5-0 out of 5 stars a city, a ship, a fountain, and a rose...
"The Donkey's Dream" by Barbara Helen Berger is one of the most beautiful tellings of the nativity story that I have ever read. It is a crystal clear, beautifully simple look at the story of Jesus' birth and the journey that led up to it--all as seen through the eyes of the Donkey that carried Mary to Bethlehem.

As is usual with Ms. Berger's books, the illustrations are stunning. I am haunted by the forget-me-nots that frame these pages. The story is also told in an original, moving way...one that will not soon be forgotten.

I recommend "The Donkey's Dream" most highly. It would make a wonderful gift (especially at Christmas time) for any Christ-follower.

5-0 out of 5 stars The best "non-page-turner"
This fun book has a great rhythm you will want to keep turning the pages and keep up with the beat, but if you read this to your children you won't get to turn the pages at your desired pace because they will love the pictures. The illustrations are great. Filled with animals and each one has a personality, as does the main character (she becomes more and more frustrated as the story moves along and her home is filled with animals who take over her house). There are so many cute details in the illustrations you children will find more things to discover with many repetitions of the book. You will read this book many times if you own it. Sometimes with your children and maybe even on your own without them there to distract you!

5-0 out of 5 stars Funny Offbeat Story
This story adapts a traditional children's song by pulling it into our contemporary world. Most of us don't go to the market anymore to buy a whole pig or cow, and the illustrator highlights this gap in time by showing what happens when one woman does bring all these animals home. The result is both thoughtful and silly: I love a children's book that doesn't take itself too seriously!

As you can imagine, the animals run loose and create havoc in the kitchen while the overwhelmed woman goes back to the market for more things. Finally in desperation, she buys a bunch of vegetables and makes them all soup!

It's an artsy little story that you can read over and over again without getting bored. The illustrations are witty and creative throughout. I appreciate inventive touches in this book, like the black and white background juxtaposed against the color foreground. Also, I like the way the market background is reminiscient of an earlier time period, perhaps the 50's or 60's?

5-0 out of 5 stars My kids love this one!
My 4 and 2 year old just love this book. It is a very simple book and I do think the illustrations are very interesting and detailed.I ordered this online and when I received it and read it myself, before I read it to them, I didn't think they would like it much, well, I was wrong! The 5 star rating is from my kids, and they are the ones who love it, and for a kids book ,that is all that matters!

5-0 out of 5 stars Jiggety Jig

5-0 out of 5 stars This is Hilarious
I just loved this book - both the story and illustrations are so much fun. My girls and I laughed through it - the funniest part was that it is almost like our house. My husband brings home a different animal every week and they are always getting into everything. I also liked that the woman bought brown rice and lots of healthy food - nice to see in children's books. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars My 2 year old daughter loves this book!
As I am typing this review my two year old daughter is looking at the picture of the "Big Egg" book and saying "Big Egg!" Each night we read many books together. She picks them out as we go. I can always tell which books she prefers based on the order in which they are picked. "Big Egg" is always one of the first books to be read. She loves the simple language and colorful pictures and I enjoy reading it to her repeatedly. It's fun to "act" out the different animal voices the Hen encounters on her search for the parent of the "Big Egg."

5-0 out of 5 stars Sweet story that makes young readers laugh
Easy and fun to read, with nice values. The illustrations help make it funny also. A family favorite.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Beginning Reader
This was the first book that my daughter read on her own, and what joy she had on her face when she read the last page! A wonderful use of simple words and repitition makes this a great book for children just starting out to read. I wish there were more books like this one! Catherine, mom to Caroline

5-0 out of 5 stars I like this book because I was the first one to read it.

5-0 out of 5 stars GEM FOR YOUR COLLECTION
My daughter loves this book. I have read it a least 100 times for her. It teaches so many things in a simple way-numbers, colors, and animals. The pictures in the book look like watercolor paintings and the colors are not exact, but it is illustrated beautifully. I was not disappointed.

5-0 out of 5 stars My Daughters Favorite Book
My daughter was attracted to this book at 6 months and it continues to be her favorite book (now at 12 months). If I ask her to bring me a book, it's always this one. To me it seems to be the repetition of the similar phrases along with the colors and images that attracts her to it. It's hard, thick pages has stood up to her mauling and chewing on it.

I wouldn't use it as a learning tool as the illustrations, while colorful (great at 6 months) are hard to use as a counting tool and the animals while recognizable, aren't distinctive (ie. Goose and Duck are pretty much the same exect for color).

As a tool to keep her occupied and watch her grin ear-to-ear as we turn the pages together, it's outstanding!!

5-0 out of 5 stars moo moo brown cow
one of our favorite books! teaches colors, counting, animals, and is a charming story of how we can never have too many friends. a classic in any child's library.

4-0 out of 5 stars great book , not so great illustrations
My son four and my daughter two love this book. The colours are a bit off, eg the white duck is yellow, the red dog has a orange hue to it and the nine small fries are blurry making it hard for 2-4 year olds to count. I've changed the word white duck to yellow duck (using a sticker)because my son is beginning to read. My son has this book completly memorized just like brown bear, brown bear and is very proud he read it.

4-0 out of 5 stars GOod book, bad color
This book captured the attention of my 4 year old right away. It was because the concept is simple yet brilliant combination of rhyme, baby animals, color, numbers which all young children adore. The only problem with the book is the color of the illustrastions. For example the white duck was yellow. Sometimes you can barely make out the baby animals because the foreground and background colors were very close. But my son LOVES it. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Another gentle farm animal story from the author of Babe.
Dick King Smith, the author of MartinÕs Mice, is best known for Babe the Gallant Pig, which of course was turned into a movie that is a lot better known than any of his books. The movie is one of the best childrenÕs films ever, and the book is even better. But it does have one disadvantage. The British dialect in Babe, while charming, is so thick it is difficult for many American parents and teachers to read aloud, and for American children to follow. DonÕt get me wrong. I love Babe and have read it aloud several times. But it is not easy.

What I like about MartinÕs Mice is that it has many of the same qualities that made Babe such a joy, including the gentleness, the emphasis on kindness, and the quirky, understated humor, but without the heavy dialect. There are Britishisms sprinkled throughout the book, but they are manageable with an American tongue.

In terms of plot and character, MartinÕs Mice is not quite up to the standards of Babe. But then how many books are? Like Babe, Martin is a farm animal who marches to a different drummer. HeÕs a cat who loves mice. But he loves them as pets, not as meals. The novel focuses on how he learns to love them more as friends and equals than as pets. Martin is a sweet, gentle character, but there is no denying he does not have the charm of Babe. And the novelÕs plot seems a little disjointed. The ending felt like it sprang on us out of nowhere.

Still, my six-year-old daughter and I both enjoyed the book. If you are looking for a childrenÕs book full of nice, gentle humor and kind characters, this is a good choice.

5-0 out of 5 stars Wow!!!!!!!
This was an excliant book!!! I decided to read this book so I could get points in reading. It looked like a small and easy read. Boy, I would read this book any day. The detail and the way the story flows is amazing!I ahve never read about a cat who dosen't eat mice! After the middle of the story I wouldn't put the book down. I learned all about the mice and that mice are dows and bucks!!! Martain gets this great idea of keeping mice as pets! The first mouse he finds is pregnant, her name is Drusila. After the first groupe off cubs, Martin decides to find her another husband, his name is Cuthbert. The first groupe are all named numbers, the second are months of the year!!! After her gets taken away as a pet imself, he never sees Dursila or Cuthbert on till....

4-0 out of 5 stars Martin's Mice is a great book!
This is a really good book about a cat named Martin who befriends mice, even though that's not what cat's do. All his siblings call him a wimp, because they say he's afraid to catch a mouse; he knows he's not a wimp! He just doesn't want to eat a mouse! They're nice, why would he want to eat one? Martin keeps mice as pets upstairs in a bathtub. He does everything he can to keep them happy. But when they escape, he doesn't understand why they wanted freedom so bad. Only after he becomes a locked up housepet does he understand and escape himself to go back to his home. THE END ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars THE WONDER OF A NEW BABY
.

The illustrations in this book are powerful but very beautiful.

All the farmyard creatures are wide - eyed, with warm, welcoming friendly faces.

They all know something is going on. They all have simple questions to ask. There is something mysterious happening.

Their suspense and curiosity grows.

The arrival of a new baby in the farmhouse is a source of wonderment and delight.

3-0 out of 5 stars Great for a toddler with a sibling on the way
This book has incredible illustrations. They are what make the book worth noting. The animals are drawn from unusual perspectives. The horse looms over you (hard to do in a book, I'll admit!), the sparrow perches rather in your face. Small children--even tiny children--will be able to enjoy this book because of the pictures. The story is about a new baby that has arrived on a farmstead--that is what the bird heard. The rhyming text is sweet but predictable. This would be a great book for a toddler with a sibling on the way. (I know my toddler was hoping for one after we read this.) Note, however, that it is a simple book, probably best enjoyed by the under-four crowd.

5-0 out of 5 stars Beautiful artwork, rhyming text make this one a winner!
My 15-month-old son loves this book's barnyard animals and rhyming text about a mysterious newcomer to the farm. Is the "NEW ONE" a duckling or a piglet? Nope! Take a tour of the farm and find out for yourself with this delightful book.

This has been a great book for introducing my son to the idea that there's a "NEW ONE" coming to our homestead soon. It'll also make a great gift for another little boy I know who's going to be a big brother soon. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Selma is my new guru!
You'll find this book in the Juvenile section. It only has about 32 pages in it. You can probably read it standing next to the shelf in the Children's Area of your library or book store, but when you're done, you will know the secret of true happiness. Save yourself some time, Dr. Phil's book is a lot longer than this and it won't help you as much. Yes, it's the story of a sheep...but she has the answers to some tough questions. Then buy one for everyone on your gift-giving list! Read-Consider-and smile...

5-0 out of 5 stars The secret of happiness in a slim volume...
This was one of those rare finds - flipping through the pages in a toy store while the Christmas rush bustled behind me, I stood reading with a serene smile on my face. I immediately bought all copies, and ordered more for all my friends. This is not a children's book, it is a mother's book, which serves to bring us the perspective we sometimes need in our busy lives. This book was a bestseller in the author's native Germany, and I see it having a large following here due to it's sweet, simple message.

4-0 out of 5 stars Great for kids of all ages
Enjoyed the size, color and design of this little gem.
Nice, positive message with some repetition is fun for little ones.
Gentle irony is also a treat for the elders who may be reading to them.
