Book Description

The Farmer is a delightful, thought-provoking tale that children and parents will want to read again and again.Centered around the farmer and his animals, it is a story of patience, perseverance and faith. The book's message is powerful and timeless as it focuses on the qualities and values that build character.

The Farmer is a gentle, hard-working man who loves his animals and tends his fields with strong, caring hands. When a series of disasters destroys his crops, he is forced to sell some of his cherished animals to recoup losses and survive until the next planting.

The illustrations are richly detailed and filled with life and emotion. The artist has captured the farmer's broad scope of feelings, as well as those of his animals, as they cope with each misfortune. Parents and children will want to study the pictures carefully to pick out all the tiny details that make this such a charming story, and the surprise ending will warm the heart and have readers cheering for the farmer. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars The Original Artwork vs. The Book in Print

When I was a missionary, I ran into Mark Ludy, who wrote this book in Longmont, CO. As an artist myself, I found the illustrations to be quite breathtaking. Not only did I see his books in print, but I also saw the original artwork in very large frames and was quite impressed, so much that I'm buying "The Farmer" AND "The Grump" for my nephew this Christmas. In addition, you'll be glad to know your money is going to a good guy. He couldn't quite see our version of the gospel message as true; nonetheless, I was much impressed by his character.

I can't say much for the plot, as I didn't quite have the time to read it, but my review is unique enough to be helpful, eh?

Buy It! You won't be let down.

5-0 out of 5 stars BEAUTIFUL ILLUSTRATIONS AND WONDERFUL STORY!!
This book is wonderful for people of all ages, it is not limited to only children. The illustrations are beautiful, paying attention to every detail! The story is very inspiring for the children to read. In today's society, it has become difficult to find books that you can feel good about your children reading; this is one of those books. Everyone should own this book! I love all of the characters and the pictures. I cannot say enough about this book! BUY IT! You will be so happy when you do!

5-0 out of 5 stars a breath of fresh air in children's literature!
Children's literature needs books that are quality not only in illustrations but in content... Something that will lead the child to identify with the hero in the book, to want to be like him. This book, The Farmer is inspiring and warms the heart. One can really feel with the Farmer as he goes through his difficulties and one can share his joy in his triumph. I highly recommend it for all ages.

5-0 out of 5 stars Fantastic!
This is the kind of book you WANT your children to read and enjoy. Not only are the illustrations stunning and beautifully rendered but the story has had just as much thought and effort put into it as the pictures. This is quality children's literature. ... Read more

Book Description

The Fourth of July is no day for danger but that's just what's in store for the Bean Farm gang in Freddy and the Perilous Adventure. It all seemed so strange and exciting at first: Emma and Alice, Bean Farm's favorite ducks, and the intrepid Freddy, off for a glorious balloon ride to celebrate the nation's birthday. Of course, if Freddy and Emma and Alice and the other denizens of Bean Farm had known what was really in store for the brave aerialists in the Balloon Ascension they might just as well have remained quietly at home, listening to Freddy's poetry or to the boastful crowing of Charles. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars The Ducks Lead the Way
When Freddy, in a sudden burst of irrepressible impishness manages to convince Emma and Alice, the Bean Farm ducks, to go for a balloon ride, he little expects that he too will have to take part in the adventure. But Mr. Golcher, the balloonist is every bit as sly as Freddy and, in no time at all Freddy has agreed not only to give a speech, but to ride with the ducks. What he also didn't realize until he was on the way up was that Mr. Golcher was staying behind, and that our pig, along with the duck sisters were on their own. When it turns out that the balloon has a faulty valve our not quite intrepid adventurers discover that they are in for an extended voyage.

All is not lost by any means. Freddy talks a friendly bald eagle into bringing them a food basket from the Bean kitchen, they weather a stormy night, and see some splendid scenery. Eventually, as all things do, the balloon descends enough for Freddy to get it down. Freddy leaves the ducks with the balloon and, after borrowing a tuxedo from a scarecrow, heads off to investigate. He soon discovers that the worst has happened. Mr. Golcher, infuriated at the loss of his balloon has accused Freddy of stealing it and the police of several counties are trying to capture the pig and bring him to justice. It will take all of Freddy's vast imagination and the help of both the Bean animals and the entire Boomschmidt Circus to get him out of trouble.

The reader will find many familiar characters here. In addition to the denizens of the Bean Farm and the Circus, Emma and Alice's Uncle Wesley manages to return. In addition, there are parachuting mice, somersaulting ducks and an ostrich ticket taker. Nor can one leave out the noble eagle, Breckenridge, who inspires a whole burst of poetry from Freddy. By the time the book reaches its climax the reader will be completely entranced as animals display character and style that we lowly humans can only imitate.

One of the nicest things about Walter Brooks' world is that the inevitable moral lessons are demonstrated rather than taught. And demonstrated in a delightful, ingenious way. In 1942 Brooks uses two timid lady ducks to demonstrate that adventuring is not just for male chauvinists and that having the courage to stand up for your rights keeps bullies at bay. Freddy's honesty saves the day at the end, and, as always, the importance of friends gets a good plug. Best of all is that the right things to do are also fun to do. Freddy is the pig for all ages. ... Read more

Book Description

Adults, children, and reviewers have embraced the stouthearted Freddy the Pig since he and his Bean Farm chums first appeared in 1927. The Overlook reissues of this classic series-with almost 150,000 hardcover copies sold-have brought these timeless adventures to a whole new generation eager for a good time and a good laugh. As a recent USA Today feature about the Freddy phenomenon noted, the Freddy books brilliantly illustrate the cardinal virtues: "fair play and a good sense of humor."

In Freddy's Cousin Weedly, the irrepressible Freddy's cousin comes to Bean Farm, and what a timid soul he turns out to be. Jinx, the cat, decides to take charge of him, so as to help him get over his shyness and poor Weedly doesn't know what exciting events are about to occur. Does Weedly change? And what happens when Mr. and Mrs. Snedeker come to visit? Do they get what they came for?

This is the best of the Freddy the pig books in my opinion.

4-0 out of 5 stars THE LOST HAS BEEN FOUND!
Ever since third grade I have hunted for and read every Freddy book I could lay hands on, but FREDDY'S COUSIN WEEDLY was always among the missing.
Thanks are due the publisher and Amazon.com making this book available again. I was afraid it was a sort of one-off, or a minor book, but ordered it for Christmas and discovered a lost treasure. All our friends are there; Jinx the Cat, Mrs. Wiggins of the uncommon common sense, patient but indecisive Hank, and, of course, that paragon of poets, detectives, and pigs -- Freddy himself.
The book was obviously written after Brooks had hit his stride with the series, having a timeless quality and the morals clearly but unobtrusively stated. This book would've gotten five stars had I not compared it to FREDDY GOES CAMPING and FREDDY THE MAGICIAN. Compared to any other children's books, it gets the full five stars. Excellent! ... This is a favorite read aloud book a the library! Kids love the illustrations and enjoy the silly hens. It also teaches a wonderful message that we are special and unique and do not deserve to be ranked! We can all be princesses!

3-0 out of 5 stars Disappointed!
My children (5 & 6) and I were so disappointed! The artwork in this book was very pleasing, but the story just seemed so flat. The intended surprises were not very surprising, and the ending could have been predicted by anyone (even a chicken).

5-0 out of 5 stars The Most Wonderful Egg in the World
I liked this book. The king announces a contest to produce the most beautiful egg in the kingdom. Three chickens do just that but in three different ways. What's a king to do? I not only thought that it was a great story but that there was a simple lesson within its pages for both children and parents. This book is a must have for any one who has children who in constant competition for outdoing every one else in the family. Also, the book gives insight to the parents on how to deal with this competition when you think that each of your children posess special talent. Parents of multiples would especially enjoy this book. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Bilingual choice for active boy
Trying to bring up our children with english and german, this book offers a great opportunity to read, as the pictures are obvious and beautifully photographed, and I can translate quickly, without the need of a dictionary. My boy doesn't sit still for long, so single images are great, he can concentrate for as long as possible, without a story being interupted, if he's patient I can make a story around an item, if not we just move from image to image. I love the series, and we have the other titles as well.

4-0 out of 5 stars Good
I probably have about 6 books in the "My First" series and found this is yet another good book in this series. I like the way that the "My First" books categorize things (noisy animals, farm colors, etc.) and this one is well done. They are all essentially picture dictionaries and a bit boring for parents but our kids love looking at them.

5-0 out of 5 stars Fantastic!
This series of board books are fantastic.

I started collecting these for my daughter after she was given one at 6 months and this is what we started to read to her every night. She woud sit and demand it to be read over and over and over again. The board pages and are easy for baby and toddler to turn and the pictures (real photography not illustrations) are wonderful.

The farm one has lots of animals, fruit and vegetables and reading them over and over my toddler can now read and say the names of each thing herself while pointing to them. She recognises things she sees on her dinner plate and goes and gets the book to compare.

If your looking for a great picture book to share with your baby this is the one (and the series of books) to buy. You can never have too many books to read with your children.

5-0 out of 5 stars reading in louisiana
I bought this book for my 14 month old little boy. He loves it - he carries it around the house. Of course, he can't read it yet, but he loves to point at the different, beautifully pictured animals in the book and listen to me say their names. He can even point to some of them after I say their names now! I love this book - great for toddlers. Easy to read, durable!

4-0 out of 5 stars My first farm board book
We like the board book for several reasons. The bright colors and the shape of the animal characters. The board pages are great because they stand upright and are durable. The babies love the stimulation. It's a good way to encourage the development of colors and shapes while they are here in our Intensivecare Nursery. One of our baby who is on a ventilator for a long time loves to look at Zebra until he goes back to sleep. Thank you for letting me write this review. Books are great for

everyone. And we are very fortunate that the colorful books are available for sick infants as well. NICU RN ... Read more

This is a favorite of my 15 month old. He has had this book since he was about 6 months old and has enjoyed it since the start. All the Snappy books are fantastic and we have most of them. Snappy Farm Animals is colorful and simple to read. Babies love the colors and the animals. The farm starts out nosiy and slowly calms down as the animals go to sleep and the farmer waves goodbye.

5-0 out of 5 stars Good for young childres
I am buying the 2nd copy of this book for my 2 year old grandson. It is one of his favorite books but due to his age and the fact he looks at this book a lot, it has some torn pop-ups. The pictures and pop-ups are large and colorful and are a good learning tool for a young child because there is not so much on a page that it overwhelms them. I highly recommend this book.

3-0 out of 5 stars Freddy the Moralist
In 1944, Freddy went up against that violent young lout, Horace Winch, and taught him to be a weekend painter (in "Freddy and Mr. Camphor"). But that wasn't enough! In "Freddy and the Popinjay," published the next year, he's out to reform the rock-slinging thug, Jimmy Witherspoon, and his tight-fisted father. The title of this one could have been changed to "Freddy the Moralist."

If you get past the unusually overt uplift, "Freddy and the Popinjay" contains much pleasant humor at the Bean Farm and environs, as well as a family of dangerous wildcats (who may also be misunderstood).

Interestingly to students of the Bean mysteries, the animals spend some time in this one waxing nostalgic over the days when those fine lads Biram and Adoniram were with them, while giving no clue as to where they have gone.

When Ella and Everett disappeared from the series, they left not a wrack behind. Adoniram, however, left his bathing trunks.

5-0 out of 5 stars Near the top of my Favorite Freddies list
I don't recall reading Popinjay when I first discovered Freddy back in 1960 (or thereabouts), but I've just read the new Overlook Press 2001 reprint. This story features the familiar, lovable Freddy characters--and a few new ones--portraying a message that we all need to remember these days: Don't judge people by appearances.

5-0 out of 5 stars The Popinjay Goeth Before the Fall
This book was written just as Walter R. Brooks was hitting his stride as a writer, and is one of the better Freddy books. A robin friend of Freddy's needs glasses, and from there the story gets wilder. The book is great fun and, as in all the Freddy books, has some lessons to impart to the reader, one of them being that conceit is not only a vice, but a rather silly one. This lesson is taught, as always, without a preachy tone intruding on the story. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Proud Petunia Pleases
Petunia is a silly goose who finds a book and believes she'll be wiser if she's seen carrying it around. And the other barnyard animals actually think she *is* wiser because of it. The thing of it is, she's still just a silly goose, who gets her friends into all sorts of scrapes.

"Petunia" is a pleaser but gets a little too philosophical in the last two pages. That's okay-- the first pages and clean 1950s illustrations make up for it. A classic.

5-0 out of 5 stars Childhood favorite
Petunia was a fourth grade favorite of mine many years ago. Her "wisdom" was so cleverly revealed in the end that I kept the book checked out of the school library all year long.

5-0 out of 5 stars class play renews love for this classic
I was saddened to see that Petunia was out of print. I wanted to order a copy for each of the first grade students who I worked on this class play with this year. The book has a great moral to it, is hilarious to the younger set and has such cute illustrations. I remembered this book from my childhood and will order an out-of-print copy for my son. Any publishers out there--"Please reprint the Petunia books!"

5-0 out of 5 stars Petunia is perfect!
Petunia finds a book, and because she carries the book around, she thinks she's smart. However, when Petunia starts passing out advice based on her "knowledge", the barnyard is ripe for one calamity after another. Petunia and her friends are colorful and comical in the illustrations, and the problems her newfound intellect creates are clever and funny. And, it couldn't be a truly good children's book without a truly good lesson at the end - a little moral about books and their value. Perfection. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Librarians love it, too!
Deborah Bruss' Book! Book! Book! is a must-have for any home or school library. As an elementary school librarian, I find it a perfect way to introduce children to the joys of visiting the library. The simple storyline delights its readers as barnyard animals make their first trek to the library. Each animal, in its own language, asks the librarian for a book. First and second graders laugh when the hen gets what she wants. Then, still, another surprise comes on the last page. Tiphanie Beeke's illustrations draw the reader and the audience in. Bright, bold colors capture the interest of my students and make it an enjoyable book to share with a class. Book! Book! Book! is a favorite that my students ask me to read again and again.

5-0 out of 5 stars Barnyard Fun.....
The poor farm animals are bored. The kids have all gone back to school and left them alone. The horse hung his head, the cow complained, the goat grumbled, the pig pouted, the duck dozed and the hen heaved a sigh and squawked "I'm bored! And I'm heading to town to find something to do!" So off they all went. Soon they got to town and found themselves in front of the library. It looked like a good place to visit since the people coming out all had smiles on their faces, so the horse went inside, approached the librarian and said neigh neigh. The librarian just stood there and looked puzzled. The horse hung his head and left. Next the cow (moo moo) tried, then the goat (baaah baaah) and pig (oink oink), with the same results. Finally the feisty hen went inside and spoke "Book, Book, Book!" with different results..... Deborah Bruss has written a funny, gentle story that will capture your little one's imaginations. Her simple text is beautifully complemented by Tiphanie Beeke's cheerful, humorous, childlike illustrations and youngsters will enjoy all the entertaining detail on each page. Perfect for preschoolers, Ms Bruss' debut picture book is a winner.

Author Deborah Bruss and illustrator Tiffani Beeke have created a world where rules are broken and expectations are turned upside down. The punchline on the last page is only one part of the joke. Who wouldn't laugh at barnyard animals in the library, a blue horse, and storytime led by a cow? The book offers different levels of participation-barnyard noises for the youngest readers, and, later, repetitive phrases. Other readers will enjoy tracking the location of a well-read amphibian in each bright scene. All will enjoy the plucky animals who give up complaining, grumbling, and pouting when they discover the treasures in the public library. Book! Book! Book! is a perfect preschool storytime read!

5-0 out of 5 stars I love this book, book, book!
I love this book, book, book! Sure it's a good joke (one that Debbie Bruss has creatively adapted for children), but it's also a delightful story about finding entertainment and pleasure in the pages of a book. Tiphanie Beekman's illustrations are warm and engaging, simple but not simplistic, sweet, with fun details (watch for the ladybug and the mouse). The language is pleasing and direct and offers opportunities for kid participation. Parents and children alike will reach for this smile-provoking book again and again - as will teachers and librarians - it's a beautiful tool for demonstrating what Book! Book! Book! readers already know: sharing a good story is FUN!

5-0 out of 5 stars Book! Book! Book!
This book is an AWESOME book for children. I first heard someone read it in a preschool group and read with such expression that the children were giggling the whole time. Make sure you get loud and do the animal sounds when you read this book to your child! They'll love it. I plan to keep a copy of it on hand to read often. ... Read more

Book Description

When a big bad wolf moves to town, it would seem that the chicken sisters' fate is sealed, but in a clever twist, the eccentric trio saves the day. The unwitting wolf proves to be no match for the good intentions of these itching-sweater-knitting, off-key-singing, burnt-cookie-baking neighbors. Here's one wolf that's off to live with his mother!

4-0 out of 5 stars Cute story . . .
This is a cute story that my daughter enjoys reading. The illustrations are very nice. For adults, it may seem odd that the the characters are intolerant of the wolf's past (he is now old and harmless) and run him out of town, but this will be lost on kids. It is a humorous story, our 2 year old understands some of the humor, while other parts are geared toward the adult funny bone.

5-0 out of 5 stars Where's the sequel??!!
We have several great books of Laura Numeroff's in our library, yet I must say this is THE favorite of our 3 yr old boy, our 8 yr old girl and myself! These sisters are nutty - but darn smart - you will fall in love with them at your first reading. And believe me - you will be pulling this book out again and again to read. The illustrations are darling too. A true gem of a book for all!!

5-0 out of 5 stars A Wonderful Book!
After reading the quirky synopsis of this book I bought it for my daughter and have been reading it to her since her birth 11 months ago. She loves it! The illustrations are colorful and lush, the animals depicted are realistic without being scary. The story is perfect, not too long and kind to sleep-deprived parents (no tongue twisters!). It is cute, whimsical and snappy. This is a book you won't mind reading again and again and again...

5-0 out of 5 stars Self-confident sisters bring laughs for adults and kids
This is a great book, as the official reviews agree. I counsel parents who worry their kids won't feel confident or will be the target of teasing or gossip (because they were conceived w/ some extra medical help, for ex. - see my book Helping the Stork). These sisters have such joy and enthusiasm, undampened by their grumpy neighbors, and they win over everyone. Carol Frost Vercollone ... Read more

As Boo and Baa read scary goodnight books in their bunk beds, the lightssuddenly go out. "What now? What happened?" It was lightning! This wouldn't beso bad--it might even have been cozy--except that they both simultaneouslyrealize that they left the croquet set outside. "We have to go out and get it,"says Baa. This begins the tale of how wet Boo and Baa get. Frightened by thebathrobes on the clothesline (Boo thinks they are ghosts), they dive into theirplastic mini swimming pool, getting even wetter. Back inside, they wonderwhether non-bathrobe ghosts may really exist. "Boo!" says Boo. "Baa..." saysBaa, just as the lights come on again. We adore Olof and Lena Landstrom'ssimple, but wonderfully nuanced Boo and Baa books, including Boo and Baa in the Woods. (Babyto preschool) --Karin Snelson ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Thrilling page turner ;o)
We are big fans of Olof Landstrom and Boo and Baa so this book did not disappoint. Boo and Baa are two cute little sheep who seem to fall into one escapade after another and, true to form, they have another adventure in this book. There is fun and games, a thunderstorm, and possibly ghosts! What more you could you ask for in a story?

My three year old just loves the Boo and Baa stories and will actually sit still to lisen to them (quite a miracle, I assure you) so I highly recommend this book for those with energetic toddlers if you are trying to teach them to appreciate a good story. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Oh the places these goats go!
A tale of three escaped goats on an adventure. Though it follows the style of going on a bear hunt, the goats are not hunting anything. Nonetheless, they find an ogre who scares them back home. The text has a comfortably repetitious style that will invite listener participation. Karen Woodworth-Roman ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars My Kids Love This Book!!!!
I bought this book when my 5 year old daughter was 2 and it was a hit instantly. We read it over and over and over and over and over again. Now my 10 month old loves it too. I started reading it to her while she was eating in her high chair and now I am finding myself reading it to her 2-3 times a day! She loves it! She gets all excited trying to make the animal sounds. I highly recommend this book. I have always read it outright but now that I heard you can sing it with the shoo fly tune I'll have to try that.

5-0 out of 5 stars Exceptional Book!
I bought this book for my grandson who is 17 months old and he loved it from the first day. When he is ready to read, he runs to the book shelf saying, "moo, moo, moo". I sing the book to him to the tune of "Shoo Fly Shoo." The illustrations are very bright and attractive as well. Dylan and I highly recommend this one!

5-0 out of 5 stars Fantastic book, loved by preschoolers, toddlers, and ME!
I am former preschool teacher and borrowed this book from the library-just grabbed it off the shelf. My class loved this book and I would read it almost SIX times a day until it had to be returned. When the class was completely chaotic, this book would bring order to the room. Even after we returned the book, we would still recite the words. I read this book to my two-year old at home too and he also loved it, although he was not as enthralled as the older chilldren. I find myself singing the book while riding in the car to my children! I will definitely be buying it for my children and all other children that I have to buy gifts for!

5-0 out of 5 stars My kids love this book
This book is a family favorite and is fun for everyone, adult reader included. My kids (ages 6, 4, and 1) all crowd around to sing the silly song and look for the mouse on every page. The illustrations are colorful and lively and the "plot" (involving the snoozing farmer and the farm animals who keep sneaking into the house) is funny and appealing to mischievous kids. Definitely a winner!

5-0 out of 5 stars Shoo, Cow Don't Bother Me.
This story (which can be sung to "Shoo Fly, Don't Bother Me") tells about the mess and havoc a bunch of farm animals cause while lazy Tom Farmer is asleep on the hay in the barn. He eventually awakens to chase them away, but those barnyard critters are a lot smarter than Tom thinks. The book is written in a repetitive style using onomatopoeia (oink, oink oink; shoo, shoo, shoo; shhh, shhh, shhh) and contains some very fun and cartoony watercolor and pencil illustrations. It's also a lot of fun to look for the little white mouse that is hiding on each page. Preschoolers really enjoy this book and it is fun to read as well. ... Read more

Book Description

A fresh retelling by Byron Barton of the well-loved story of the little red hen who grows grain, threshes wheat, and feeds her chicks--all by herself, without any help from her lazy friends.

Mr. Barton's simple words, bold images, and imaginative use of color have made his many picture book perennial favorites with young children.

5-0 out of 5 stars Good Version for Toddlers
This book has been a favorite for the last several months. My son liked the repetition and the bright pictures from the start, and as he gets older (he's now 21 months) he also enjoys naming the animals and what they are doing. There is lots in the pictures for a toddler to talk about: planting seeds, cooking, kite flying, napping, and so on. I'm not wild about the artwork in this book, but then again I'm not its target audience--the simplicity seems to work great for young kids.

5-0 out of 5 stars A toddler favorite
My 17-month old daughter has loved this book for months already. It has a rhythmic text and lively pictures, plus it is about animals, which is always a hit with the toddler set.

5-0 out of 5 stars Perfect for Toddlers
My 3 year old son and I love this book. The story is simple with a repetitive refrain that little ones can become familiar with. The illustrations are perfect for the recommended age group; bright and simple with easy to pick out shapes, animals, and other figures. The overall message about helping others is a good lesson as well. ... Read more
