5-0 out of 5 stars A humorous, gentle tale
The Wedding is a recommended and cheery picturebook by Eve Bunting about a country wedding featuring an anthropomorphic animals including the bride, the groom, and all of the guests. But it seems that one problem after another besets the organist, the chef, and the florist -- all of whom are struggling to get to the church on time. And where is the bride? The Wedding is recommended as being a humorous, gentle tale which very nicely enhanced for young readers with the fanciful color illustrations of Iza Trapani.

5-0 out of 5 stars A MERRY, WARM STORY
Few occasions are as exciting or as nerve wracking as a wedding.Further, that's one occasion when everyone wants each detail to be perfect. In lilting rhyme Eve Bunting relates the story of a wedding that almost wasn't.

As Miss Brindle Cow strolls along the path to town she listens to the wedding bells of Saint Michelle. She's surprised to find Pig sitting beneath a tree woefully examining a bandaged knee.Pig's the church organist, you see, and now can't get to the wedding.

Fortunately Brindle Cow is very kind hearted. She invites Pig to ride to the church on her back. It's not too long before they spy Pomeroy the turtle. He's the florist.Unfortunately a very slow florist who fears there'll be no flowers for the wedding at the rate he's going.

You guessed it - Brindle Cow invites Pomeroy to join Pig on her back. Before long a stranded duck, rabbit, and chipmunkjoin the pair riding to the church.

Thanks to the goodness of the Brindle Cow all arrived in plenty of time for the nuptials. You're going to have to guess who the bride might be.

"The Wedding" is a light hearted and loving look at a very special day.

5-0 out of 5 stars these books are a busy moms best friend!
Any of the 1001 things to spot books are wonderful! My twins girls have several of them and they can sit for the longest time playing with these books. They help with identifying objects, counting, color recognition, patience etc. I highly recommend them and we give them to their friends at Chirstmas and birthday parties. I haven't found them in any bookstores, I've only found then online. Moms, get your kids one of these books, you won't be sorry!!

Book Description

Getting there is half the fun with this pair, and along the way (past an electrical tower they think is the Eiffel), Minnie and Moo pick up a busload of equally adventurous animal friends from nearby Africa World, careen through a car wash they believe is China, and find themselves trading stories under a night sky in what they hope is America. The power and appeal of story itself has rarely been funnier -- or sweeter -- than in this slapstick extravaganza. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Minnie and Moo Go To Paris
Yes, this is a children's book, but then again, it isn't. I dare any person who calls themselves a grown-up to read any of the "Minnie and Moo" books and not get the urge to laugh out loud. Go ahead, though, and find a kid to read it to if you're too self-conscious to laugh out loud by yourself. There are plenty of opportunities to use your scary voices, animal noises and bus-driving-through-a-carwash sounds. Oh, yeah, and kids will love it, too. ... Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars Infantile garbage! A flaming insult to my intelligence!!!
They call this a book?! What a rip-off!!! First of all, it's only 25 pages long and contains only 17 words. Yeah, that's right. Only 17 words. That comes to about 24 cents per word. There is no plot to speak of. All it shows is pictures of various farm animals with a description of the animal next to the picture. For example, they show a picture of a hen next to the word "hen." Like, duh, I couldn't figure that out?! Is this author writing for infants, or what??

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Pictures
My son loves this book, he started at 6 months and still loves it at one and a half. Just pictures of animals and a label indicating what kind of animal it is. You get to do a lot of ellaborating.

5-0 out of 5 stars Keeps my five month old son very interested.
Robert and I read this book about twice a day. It is a small boardbook, so he can help turn the pages. No words, just pictures of cute farm animals. I get to add all the sound effects (mooo. bah-bah, quack-quack, etc.) Robert loves it!!! ... Read more

Book Description

Cowboy Gene loves his eight cows, and Cowgirl Sue loves her eight cows, and both of them like the fence that keeps their pastures--and cows--apart. But then a tornado blows through and takes the fence with it. The cows are mixed up, and Sue and Gene are in a muddle. Will they ever be able to figure out whose cows are whose?
An all-singing, all-dancing, hard-riding, and high-romancing story of a lasso-tossin' cowgirl, a tough-as-jerky cowboy, and the two herds of do-si-do-ing, polka-prancing, high-stepping heifers that bring them together.

5-0 out of 5 stars Sixteen Cows is aswesome!
I am not sure who enjoys this book more...me or my children! I love reading the rhyming verses and getting my kids involved by "Mooing". It's fun, the illustrations are great, and it's easily become a favorite book in our house!!!

4-0 out of 5 stars A rootin'-tootin' good read!
"Sixteen Cows" is one of those rare children's books that is not only fun for the kiddies, but may actually be more amusing for the adult reading it.

Lonely Cowboy Gene and lovely Cowgirl Sue share a fence, but despite their neighborliness and like herds of eight humorously named bovines, a bit of competition keeps the two at odds. The deus ex machina of a tornado rips down the fence and the cows do the rest, intermingling hopelessly, while refusing to hear the calls to come back to their respective sides. Forced to cooperate, the rival cowpokes finally drop the competition and work together. Can love be far behind?

Clearly there is plenty to like in the book. Many kids' picture books fall down in the text, but not here. Lisa Wheeler's long rhymes capture the reader's heart and flow nicely, complemented well by the sprawling, glowing, watercolor images of Kurt Cyrus. Together there is a synergy that makes this book oddly compelling. Little humorous touches abound - such as the cow names and the items tossed up by the tornado - that may mean more to adults than kids, so while my toddler son likes the book, his dad enjoys it even more. (At the cost of a star, the backstory of the book may be lost on the very young, who may not fully grasp love stories and weddings.)

With its large illustrations and silly/sweet story, this paean to the prairie is clearly designed to be read out loud and often. So pick out your best West Texas drawl, mosey on up to your favorite lil' pardner, and share the fun of "Sixteen Cows."

5-0 out of 5 stars A Rootin' Tootin' Good Time.....
Meet Cowboy Gene Biddle and Cowgirl Sue Waddle, neighbors and cow lovers, living peacefully on the western prairie. Each went about their daily ranch chores until it was time to call their cows home. Then with a loud and strong voice, each would sing their "come-home song," calling every cow by name. "Now Waddle Ranch was on a hill and sat right next to Biddle./And where each ranch's pasture met, a fence ran down the middle./So Biddle cows and Waddle cows were not in any danger/of getting mixed at grazing time and dining with a stranger." That is, until a fierce Arkansas wind blew that old fence "plumb clean away." Now with their cows all mixed up, what are a couple of cowpokes going to do to separate their herds and bring them home..... Lisa Wheeler's spirited and engaging, happily ever after, good-time story, complete with western dialogue, begs to be read aloud. Her entertaining, rhyming text is full of energy, humor, and wild west fun. Kurt Cyrus' bold and busy artwork captures the story beautifully, and is rich in expressive and charming detail. Together this duo have authored a playful and silly "love story" that is sure to keep your little cowpokes smiling and giggling to the very last page. So find out how sixteen cows finally brought these two lonely ranchers together, and enjoy.

5-0 out of 5 stars Romantic fun!
Our family loves this book! The rhyming text is an absolute delight to read aloud, and the story line is so much fun. The bridesmaid cows are hilarious. (Makes me want to go out and buy a cow!) This book will be read over and over again in our house. YEEHAW!

5-0 out of 5 stars ***SIXTEEN STARS***
Sixteen Cows is full of high-steppin' fun! Cowboy Gene and Cow Girls Sue's herds of cows get all mixed up one afternoon when a twister blows their fences down. Hilarity ensues as these two ranchers try to call their cows home. Lisa Wheeler's rhyming cattle calls are a hoot. My kids love reciting all of the clever cow names... "Sunflower! Baby Face! Button Eyes! Charlotte Grace! Jelly Roll! Peekaboo! Cinderbox! Bobbie Lou!"

Kurt Cyrus's beautiful, rich illustrations are breathtaking and add to the fun of this wild western lovestory.

A moo-sical tale not to be missed! ... Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars Freddy the Moralist
In 1944, Freddy went up against that violent young lout, Horace Winch, and taught him to be a weekend painter (in "Freddy and Mr. Camphor"). But that wasn't enough! In "Freddy and the Popinjay," published the next year, he's out to reform the rock-slinging thug, Jimmy Witherspoon, and his tight-fisted father. The title of this one could have been changed to "Freddy the Moralist."

If you get past the unusually overt uplift, "Freddy and the Popinjay" contains much pleasant humor at the Bean Farm and environs, as well as a family of dangerous wildcats (who may also be misunderstood).

Interestingly to students of the Bean mysteries, the animals spend some time in this one waxing nostalgic over the days when those fine lads Biram and Adoniram were with them, while giving no clue as to where they have gone.

When Ella and Everett disappeared from the series, they left not a wrack behind. Adoniram, however, left his bathing trunks.

5-0 out of 5 stars Near the top of my Favorite Freddies list
I don't recall reading Popinjay when I first discovered Freddy back in 1960 (or thereabouts), but I've just read the new Overlook Press 2001 reprint. This story features the familiar, lovable Freddy characters--and a few new ones--portraying a message that we all need to remember these days: Don't judge people by appearances.

5-0 out of 5 stars The Popinjay Goeth Before the Fall
This book was written just as Walter R. Brooks was hitting his stride as a writer, and is one of the better Freddy books. A robin friend of Freddy's needs glasses, and from there the story gets wilder. The book is great fun and, as in all the Freddy books, has some lessons to impart to the reader, one of them being that conceit is not only a vice, but a rather silly one. This lesson is taught, as always, without a preachy tone intruding on the story. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars LOVE, LOVE, LOVE this book!!
This is one of my toddlers favorite books. She loves the rhyming and the colors on the book and will ask us to read it over and over to her. Simply one of the best books to teach barnyard animals and their sounds to your children. I can't say enough praise about this book and how much my daughter loves it!!

5-0 out of 5 stars One of the BEST!!!
This book is simple yet fantastically fun and educational. My 7 month old loves to hear it and smiles as soon as I begin the first page. He can be in the throws of whaling anytime, anywhere and I begin to recite the rhyming animal noises and he just giggles! It is amazing how such a simple idea, so well written, can bring so much fun! You have to get this one!

5-0 out of 5 stars We love it!
My 20 month old twins can't get enough of this book! They love looking for the goose and making all the barnyard sounds. What a great book for our curious girls!

5-0 out of 5 stars abstract delight in the farmyard
I love this book--it's beautiful. This book is a delightful romp through the farmyard, with goose leading the way across the pages as she chases a butterfly, causing the ruckus with all the animals. The abstract artwork truly appeals to adults and, therefore, may be too difficult for very young children to comprehend: the pigs in the muck, the kittens in the hayloft, the pigeons in the rafters all might be a little tough for a baby to distinguish. But a parent rereading the book several times in a row will appreciate seeing Fleming's gorgeous art each time. My nine-month-old son reacts to the colors with glee and my imitations of the animals with laughter--this is definitely one of his favorites. I highly recommend this book.

5-0 out of 5 stars Animals from Old MacDonald's Farm Come Alive
This book for very young children is a presentation of Old Mac Donald's farm animals in delightful colors page after page. Fleming's style of "pulp painting" which she used to create images is very inovative. On each spread is an interesting combination of sculpture, painting and collage using bright colors. Among other natural materials, she used colored cotton pulp, ground coffee, kernels of oats and a piece of burlap potato sack that rendered texture on her artwork that one can almost actually feel and smell! In Barnyard Banter, the cows in the pasture moo, the hens in the henhouse cluck, and the pigs in the wallow muck. While she started the book with familiar animals. Fleming added new animals like the mice in the grain bin that squeak, the peacocks that shriek, the pigeons that coo, the crows that caw and the crickets that chirp. The little readers may have difficulty distiguishing the pigs from the background, but once they find the pigs' eyes and snouts, they will see that the pigs are having fun wallowing in the mud. Adults and kids will have fun sharing this books as they read, play and sing with it. Infants who are attracted with different sounds and voice intonations will be fascinated with the different sounds of the animals, not to mention their bright colors. One-year-olds can start pointing to the animals and later on imitate their sounds. The two's and three's can identify the animals and create their own sounds. Fleming also invites the kids to look for the goose that is hiding among the different animals in each spread. Children between one and two years old ae capable of spotting details and older kids will enjoy looking for partly hidden objects. Fleming made this game more interesting by showing only parts of the goose in some pages. For instance, in one page, only the beak of the goose in showing on the corner of the page. It will also be interesting to see, if the children will notice that a butterfly always hangs around with the goose. Infact, it was the butterfly that sort of provided the prelude and the postlude for the book because it was the only creature in the title page, and at the last page, the butterfly was being chases by the goose. Different kinds of games and activities can be shared between the child and the parent/adult with this book. Fleming's choice of types and size fro her text is also appropriate for the very young readers. Black bold and simple types were used to make it easy for the kids to identify the words or letters. The simple short sentences telling where the animals are located were written on straight lines on the top of the page, but the sounds that they make are written all over, which added interest to the page. The text are interesting and predictable and made use of various letter sound combinations like muck, cluck, moo, coo, caw, haw, squeak and shriek. It will be interesting how kids will react to the words wallow, paddock, hayloft and rafters which may not be common to city children's vocabulary. The bright red color for end pages easily attracts attention and provides a glaring contrast to the sunshiny yellow of the title page and the end page. The book might be too big for small hands but will fit perfectly on adult's lap. The size of the book, the big text and the bright pictures will be good for small group reading. As in other books on farm animals, it will be nice to end the reading with the singing of the old time favorite "Old MacDonald Had a Farm, e-i-e-i-o... ... Read more

Debería decirse Él topetea y no Él topeta.

5-0 out of 5 stars It helped me...
I used this book, en español, in my first grade class room that I volunteer in, with the bilingual and spanish speaking children. It was the first time that they had books read to them in their native language in school, the first time they had their native tongue recognized as an academic thing, and it helped to build their self esteem in learning to read and write spanish. I also have a friend who owns this book in Norwegan... I highly recommend it, in any language.

3-0 out of 5 stars What edition were you reading?
I highly recommend this book in any language! Ferdinand the Bull is a wonderful story with comical illustrations. The translated version that I have in castellano is well done. I use the story with my ninth grade Spanish classes mostly to demonstrate the use of the Imperfect and Preterite tenses. The book gives some excellent examples and is jampacked with vocabulary and cultural information. There is only one missing accent mark in the version I own and some "leismo"(common in Spain)which is the use of the indirect object pronoun "le" in place of a direct object pronoun.

1-0 out of 5 stars Mala edición y traducción

1-0 out of 5 stars Bad translation
The translation of this book is one of the worst ones I have ever seen. The text lacks accents, is full of major gramatical errors and includes literally translated sentences that have no meaning in Spanish. The publication of this translation is insulting to my language and my community. ... Read more

This is a beautiful picture book with a fun, rhyming story, and super illustrations! The poor flea has a cold and he sounds stuffy when he talks ("Does eddybody hab a tissue for be?"). He sniffles, sneezes, and wakes up the whole barn! There are lots of animal sounds to read, too, which little ones usually love. Great fun for your 3-6 year-old!

Entertaining and funny book. Nicely illustrated. Good for reading aloud, particularly if you include sounds (snoring, sneezing). My 3 yr old daughter really enjoys this one. She now recites it from memory.

3-0 out of 5 stars Great artwork, contrived story
I love love love the illustrations of this book. They're so full of colour, movement and personality. Lots of kid appeal! However, I feel that the artwork is its strongest point. While I appreciated the value in the repetition and the rhyming, I found the story and the rhyme itself very contrived. I felt as if the author was trying too hard to get the rhyme to fit neatly and compactly into the almost 30 pages that the story rests on.

That said, my 3 year old daughter loves this book and whenever she asks me to read it, I have to do so several times before I manage to redirect her attention towards a different book. She laughs hysterically whenever we get to the part where the flea sneezes. That reaction must count for something and probably has more merit than the opinion of her cranky mommy.

5-0 out of 5 stars Tumble-down wonderful
This is one of the best children's books we've read. Our 3 year old loves the repetition and after a couple of readings, has memorized the entire book. We have to read it every night before bed. It is a wonderful story, and the illustrations are fabulous. A must have for your child's library.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Book!
Any book that can make my three year old grand-daughter
laugh out loud deserves a five star rating. It was a delightful story, very easy to read. It is a favorite of ours, that will be read again and again. ... Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars Bah!
This story stinks! How dare the author of this book show selfishness like that and glorify it! The story is lame and evil. A dummy hen asks everyone one the Farm to help her bake some bread. They all have better things to do, so she does on her own. Then when it is all done, all their things are done, so they kindly ask if they could have a slice. She meanly refuses, and hogs all the delicious bread in front of the poor, starving animals. This story is a bad influnce on kids, because it glorifies gluttony and selfishness. This book ought to be banned. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars An Occasional Cow
This book was very exiting and adventurious. We liked it because it wasn't to long. We also liked it because there was this lady named "the pistachio women" and she hated flying on airplanes. It seemed like it would be a small childs book, but it was really for a 4th grade level. This book made me laugh and I really liked it.

5-0 out of 5 stars Occasional Cow
Occasional Cow is about this girl named Imogene. She always goes to camp but this year she can't, so she has to go to her aunt Bobo's house in Iowa. She has a hard time fitting in at first and then she gets to know them and starts playing with her cousins. She spies on their neighbor with them, with her new sunglasses. She is making the worlds longest gum wrapper chain. Her best friend is Eddie. I think you will like this book. I sure did.

3-0 out of 5 stars Mild country fun
An Occasional Cow tells the story of Imogene, who lives in New York City but spends all her summers at camp. When her usual camp burns down, though, her parents are desperate to find a place to send her. Aunt Bobo's farm in Iowa is their answer.

In Iowa, Imogene meets her cousins: Josephine, March, Annie Mae, and Nathan. At first, there's some minor clashes between Josephine and Imogene, as the girls are quite similar. As the summer progresses, the group becomes fast friends and shares adventures. They spy on their neighbors, climb the laundry shute, and struggle to train their pigs to curtsey so they can win the annual pig talent show.

An Occasional Cow is light, pleasant fare. There isn't much plot, and what there is is far from compelling, but some of the characters are engaging, and the narrative moves swiftly. There are also touches of humor. Horvath often appears, in this book and in others, to be paying homage to Edward Eager's writing style (there are phrases in all of her books that are more or less direct quotes from Eager's work), so perhaps it isn't too surprising that Cow reads like an Eager book with the magic replaced by more mundane activities.

The book's most serious flaw is its lack of any conflict. Horvath tries, and then discards, one conflict after another, but she just doesn't seem to be comfortable having any of her characters struggle or fight. For example, Imogene doesn't like being sent to camp - she'd prefer to stay in New York - and she hates the idea of going to Iowa. With a set up like that, it seems likely that the story will feature either Imogene's attempts to teach her parents to let her stay home, or Imogene's gradual conversion to loving her summers away. In fact, neither thing happens, because by the end of the second chapter, Imogene is entirely happy and settled into the country, without having changed her general attitude towards her summers at all. The remainder of the conflicts are handled precisely the same way - they show up briefly and are fixed within 15 pages.

All in all, this book is a nice diversion, nothing more, but it might be pleasant for young readers who enjoy light and cheerful stories. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Great book - cute and good values
This book is definitely worth having. Our 2 1/4 year old son (who likes tools and loves music) loved the twist on a familiar and loved song. The depiction of Old MacDonald as a sheep and as a female!!!! who has a woodshop!!!! makes this a must have book to balance out, for both boys and girls, the lack of gender-neutral characters and over representation of gender-stereotypes that is ubquitious in both books and songs. The sounds used for the various tools are not that good so you may want to make up your own but otherwise the pictures and text are good and what Old MacDonald and the animals are building makes for a cute surprise ending.

5-0 out of 5 stars Too CUTE!

5-0 out of 5 stars Well written, good values, a loveable heroine...
This is a favorite in our home. Reading is an important part of our day and like many parents, I've had to suffer through repeated readings of a story that charmed my child but bored me to death. This book is well-written (what a concept!) and a joy to read over and over and over and...well, you get the picture.

It offers simple yet important lessons young children can understand ("don't judge others simply by how they look" and "God doesn't make mistakes in how we're made") and offers parents a chance to have an age-appropriate conversation with their little ones about people who look or act differently, what can happen if you wander away from home, and how to handle scary situations (like getting lost). It also offers parents the chance to discuss the nature of God in a way that's very easy to understand. Cow learns that even when she's lost, God is with her and most importantly, no matter how many friends God brings her, He is the best friend!

This is truly one of the best books gracing my son's book shelf. Buy it now!

Book Description

Meet Clorinda!

Life on the farm is everything a cow like Clorinda could want, or so she thought. Then one Election Day, while up at dawn to travel to the distant city to cast her annual ballot, Clorinda is confused by the signs and stumbles into a performance of classical ballet instead. Bewilderment soon gives way to enchantment and she loses her heart to the magic of the dance. Clorinda's dream of becoming a bovine ballerina is set and she's headed for the big-city stage to start her career. Her mottoes, "Be bold and imaginative! Shoot for the sky!"

Robert Kinerk's witty and spirited verses combine with Steven Kellogg's effervescent and expansive artwork to introduce an endearing heroine. Irrepressible Clorinda will inspire standing ovations and cries of "ENCORE!" from picture-book readers of all ages. ... Read more
