4-0 out of 5 stars Not my personal favorite, but the kids love it!
I'll admit it...I hate reading this book again and again. There are so many animals to characterize that I lose track of which voice belongs to which animal. Well, too bad for me, because my 18 month old and 3 year old can't get enough of Chicken Little and all his buddies in their quest to tell the king "The sky is falling!" The illustrations are good, although nothing extraordinary, and this adaptation is very simplified with a non-threatening ending (there is no "Foxy Loxy" to trick and eat the animals, just a gentle and kind king and a good hearty laugh about Chicken Little's mistake). Older children may prefer the "danger" of Foxy Loxy in other adaptations, but my toddlers are crazy about this one.

5-0 out of 5 stars A delightful classic.
My toddler loves this book! She "reads" along as Chicken Little greets her friends. The repetition is perfect for this age group and the colorful illustrations are wonderful. ... Read more

Duck, Hen, and Goose are going on a picnic."It's such a lovely day!"They fill their basket with their three favorite foods...berries for Hen, apples for Goose, and pears for Duck, and off they go."Were going on a picnic!" they sang as they walked across the field."Now to find the perfect spot. This task seems to be harder than you'd think.None of the three can agree on the perfect place, and pretty soon three other forest friends, a mouse, a squirrel, and a rabbit are quietly following along. Each time our trio of friends sets the basket down, thinking they've found the perfect picnic spot, Mouse, Squirrel, or Rabbit jumps in, and eats some of their food. Finally, Hen, Duck, and Goose arrive back at their home. They haven't found a picnic spot, and for some "unknown" reason, their basket is very empty.Everything must have fallen out. What to do?Let's fill up the basket and "Off we go again..."Pat Hutchins has written a charming and amusing little treasure your kids will want to read again and again. Her spare, cheerful text is simple and repetitive, and begs to be read aloud. But it's her bright, colorful, and expressive illustrations that really steal the show.Youngsters will get a big kick out of watching the story unfold and being in on the secret, while their barnyard friends go on their merry way without a clue.Perfect for preschoolers, We're Going On A Picnic is a delight, and a wonderful addition to all home bookshelves. ... Henny doesn't know what to do. Every morning the irksome gnomelikeTomten steals her egg and takes it home to cook in his kettle and gobble up forbreakfast. But when she sees Goosey-Goosey sailing by with a gaggle of goslings,Henny is suddenly galvanized to do something. Will she never have chicksof her own? She consults her wise friend Hedgie the Hedgehog, who comes up witha clever plan guaranteed to give the Tomten a sharp lesson in appropriatebehavior.

Jan Brett's trademark illustrations--detailed watercolors bordered by intricateneedlepoint patterns---capture the charm and mischief of this Scandinavian-stylefolk tale set in Denmark. Each wide woven margin shows a hint in miniature ofupcoming events: Hedgie crawling under Henny's brooding basket, or the enragedTomten after being outwitted. Young readers will love guessing what Hedgie hasup his proverbial sleeve, and will rejoice with Henny at the unusual hatching ofher first brood of chicks. A warm, humorous, 100 percent satisfying story by thecreator of many picture book favorites, such as The Hat and The Mitten. (Ages 3 to 7)--Emilie Coulter ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars A delightful read!
Henny lays her egg every morning only to have the Tomken eat it for breakfast because he was tired of porridge. Then one day, Henny saw a goose walking with her goslings ~~ that awoken a deep desire in Henny's heart. How she wanted to have little peeps of her own! One day, Hedgie noticed Henny's depression and listened to her friend. Then Hedgie promised to help Henny.

What a clever little story ~~ with Hedgie finding different food for the Tromken to eat! When he threatens to eat Henny if she doesn't lay any more eggs, Hedgie comes up with a not-so-pleasant surprise! And everyone even the Tomken is happy.

The pictures are wonderfully detailed and the story is beautiful. My favorite design of this book is the quilt look of Brett's designs. It's cozy and homey ~~ perfect reading for children of all ages! It is also inspirational as well ~~ her art simply makes you smile.

5-0 out of 5 stars Homework Assignment
I liked this book becuase I liked finding out of Henny was gong to get any babies, and finding out if the Tomten was goiong to be tricked or if he was going to eat all of her eggs. It is hard to read the words in the book because of the colored pages. The words are good for 5 to 8 year olds to read. Hedgie has a lot of tricks, and helps Henny.

5-0 out of 5 stars Jan Brett...Wonderful, as Always
Poor Henny, all she really wants is to be a mother hen and have a bunch of baby chicks, just like her friend Goosey-Goosey. But that is not to be. For every morning, the Tomten comes and takes her newly laid egg for his breakfast. Enter Hedgie, the hedgehog with a clever idea and a few tricks up his proverbial sleeve. Early each morning, before the rooster crows and wakes the Tomten up, Hedgie takes Henny's egg and substitutes something else for it...first an acorn, then a strawberry, a mushroom and then a potato. And each day, the Tomten is left hungry. He becomes so angry that he threatens to eat Henny if she does not leave him an egg for breakfast the next day. Henny is scared and frantic, but Hedgie still has one last surprise left for that mean Tomten and an even bigger surprise for Henny.....Jan Brett, has written a simple, witty Scandinavian folk tale, starring her wonderful and always endearing, Hedgie. Her text is only outdone by her detailed, expressive artwork, complete with signature needlepoint border and clues, stiched in, of what's to come. Young children will be entranced as they listen to this humorous tale while following the illustrations and guessing at the story plot. Hedgie's Surprise makes a terrific gift and is a great addition to all home libraries.

5-0 out of 5 stars Charming and Clever!
Every morning Henny has her egg stolen by a porrige hating tomten. He steals the egg and cooks it up for his breakfast. Henny puts up with this until one day when she sees Goosey-Goosey swimming with her newly hatched goslings in the pond. Henny longs for a batch of chicks of her own! She begins to weep. Our hero Hedgie hears her crying and offers to help. The next day Hedgie substitutes an acorn for the egg in Henny's nest. The tomten finds it and cooks it up for his breakfast but it does not fill him up. The following days a strawberry, mushroom and then a potato are left for the tomten. They do not fill him up and the tomten threatens to eat Henny if she does not leave him an egg the next day! Hedgie comes up with the perfect plan to rid Henny of the Tomten! The next day the tomten gets the surprise of his life when he comes for the egg! He runs off and learns to enjoy porrige once again! This story is a winner from start to finnish. Jan Brett's beautiful pictures bring this story to life. ... Read more

Book Description

This very simple rhyming alphabet book takes on a subject dear to the author's heart: goats! These lovable, frisky animals prance throughthe pages, wreaking havoc and charming young children on each spread, from A is for Apple (a goat's favorite snack) to Z is for triplets Zig, Zag, and Zoe.

Patricia Polacco really knows her goats-she has raised more than a few herself at her Michigan farm-so her depictions of them are authentic and loving. And the easy, breezy alphabet text ("L is for lunch-get out of their way! M is for Munich; clothes taste better than hay.") will appeal to readers of all ages.

5-0 out of 5 stars FUNNY AND SUNNY
Popular children's book author and illustrator Patricia Polacco's love for the goats with whom she shares her Michigan farm is evident on the funny, sunny pages of this rhyming alphabet book.

Beginning with "A is for apple, the best treat of all. B is for Billy, what boy goats are called," and concluding with "Z...amaZing! Three babies came...Zig, Zag and Zoe will be their names," young readers are treated to vivid descriptions of what goats look like, what they're fond of doing, and their favorite foods.

Polacco's trademark bold watercolor illustrations of the animals and babushka wearing girls are eye-catching and whimsical.

5-0 out of 5 stars Richie's Picks: G IS FOR GOATS
I have now raised Nubian dairy goats for half of my forty-eight years. For most of that time I've resided in a small community across the country from where I was, myself, born and raised. I was enticed to move to Sebastopol, California--sight unseen--by Steven Schack, a late friend who was important in the goat dairying industry and who had adopted the community as his own while attending college nearby. I was motivated to seek out my little hillside spot in the country by the necessity of having a decent field in which to pasture my goats. "The farm" is now, in fact, the place where I have spent the largest chunk of my life.

Just as Steven convinced me to come, he also persuaded a number of well-known people in the goat industry to move here too. Shari and I even get to teach some of their children.

Thus, even though I only keep a modest herd these days, and even though my days of traveling eight or ten hours each way (through the night) to goat shows are many years behind me, I owe so much of whom I've become to having fallen in love back in the late 1970s with a little speckled goat kid, that I named Joyce (after a local politician). I have thousands of memories involving goats and friends with goats. Births and deaths. Backbreaking work rebuilding barns and erecting fences. The smelly, tedious work of shoveling out barns. The hot, sweaty job of shearing them for the show ring. Being handed a blue ribbon at a National Show. Lounging around outside with the does as they nudge me to be scratched, or tug at my hair to elicit my reaction. Watching the young kids hopping around in the tall grass like popcorn. Raising our children on the milk my goats produce.

Over my many years of involvement with children's picture books, I have always been delighted by the Nubian dairy goats that appear in many of Patricia Polacco's books. It has always been clear to me that Patricia has spent much time with the goats. Her goats' expressions are consistently reminiscent of ones I see in my own barn. When Patricia captures a goat they usually have ears that flop wildly and hooves that kick up ever so true to life.

G IS FOR GOAT is Patricia's celebration of goatkeeping. It will be a dangerous book in the hands of any persuasive youngster whose parents have enough room in the backyard for a family pet or a 4H project. Remember that Judith Viorst poem about Mother not wanting a dog? Well, there are going to be a bunch of mommies and daddies who are going to end up with a couple of Nubian does--like it or not--thanks to the joyfulness and appeal of this bouncy alphabet-of-goats book. Eating flowers, pulling carts, giving birth, climbing on things. Such is the life of goats.

An adorable introduction to one of the best friends you may ever have, my copy of G IS FOR GOATS is leaving here today with the pair of Nubian kids who I've just sold to a young couple and their preschool daughter.

And if you're ever around Sebastopol, you can stop by and chew a little cud with Beezus (one of the "old ladies"), Hollis Woods (this year's rambunctious firstborn), and the rest of our "girls." ... ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Classic Returns
My parents bought this book for me in 1973. It has always inspired me to try harder no matter what. I now share my copy with my children and plan to buy a copy for each of them. This book would make a wonderful first book for any child (a baby shower gift for my brother)or an addition to any adult's book collection. Buy it, share it and live by Ms. Mooley's moto "all it takes is a little practice and determination"

5-0 out of 5 stars Mrs. Mooley
This is an excellent children's book.I totally disagree with Hook's assessment that this is uninspired. It has inspired our family.Anytime something is difficult my 5 year old states "anything is possible with a little practice and determination".

This cow makes her dream possible even in the face of others laughing at her.A good lesson in "not having to go along with the crowd and peer pressure".

5-0 out of 5 stars My Two Year Old Can't Get Enough of This Book
Several times a day my two year old will place himself squarely in frontof my wife or myself and simply demand "Mrs. Mooley!"

That'sabout the best endorsement I can give for a children's book.

This taleis of a cow who is inspired by a misplaced book of nursery rhymes toaccomplish one -- the cow jumping over the moon.

All of the other animalslaugh at Mrs. Mooley as she practices for her attempt.Their laughterturns to wide eyed adoration as she clears the moon on her final attempt, just as dawn is breaking over the barnyard.

As Mrs. Mooley states: "all it takes is a little practice and determination."

5-0 out of 5 stars Entertaining, If Only To Me
The ending of this book has such a twist, that most children I've read this book to don't seem to get it. Actually, only a handful of parents seem to realize what just happened. But that doesn't detract from the fact the story of one incredibly hungry hen and one slowly starving fox is one of the more entertaining children's books to come out in 2001. The illustrations fit the story well, as does the use of repetition throughout the hungry hen's story. While I'm sure the fun twist can be seen coming a mile away, I won't ruin it here for people who don't read reviews. Needless to say, whether you're reading this to one child, or an entire classroom full of chilren, this simply told story entertains them all. ... Read more

This is another wonderful book by Phyllis Root. The pictures are beautiful and the story has a dreamy rhythm that will help your child fall asleep. This is also a counting book. My son who is three loves this book.

5-0 out of 5 stars A BEAUTIFULLY ILLUSTRATED BEDTIME STORY
This is a bedtime story you can count on - literally. Pastel and acrylic illustrations in moonlit tones follow the adventures of ten little sheep on their way to bed.

When their mother calls that it's time to go to sleep the ten sheep jump over the cucumber vine to play some more. But gradually one by one the lambs tire and fall asleep.

Youngsters will enjoy watching the lambs as they see blossoms close and ducklings close, all soft drowsy suggestions. In addition, young ones can practice their counting as they nod off.

"Ten Sleepy Sheep" is an imaginative bedtime story beautifully illustrated.

Book Description

"Look at those stars, Minnie," Moo says, wondering. "We can't be the only intelligent life in the universe." Lolling after hours in the farmer's hot tub, Minnie and Moo hardly suspect that aliens are landing just one hill to the west. We see the mite-sized, bug-eyed enemy in alternate chapters, peering through their snooper scope, revving themselves up for an invasion. They mistake the cows for giants, their horns for newfangled weapons, the steaming hot tub for a spaceship moments from liftoff. Minnie and Moo mistake the invaders are mosquitoes, and a hilarious battle ensues -- with an earth-saving flyswatter. ... Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars Minnie and Moo - Save your money
Positively the dumbest book I have ever read to my child. He loves cows, but hates this book, and so do I. It contains jokes he cannot understand, it's illustrations are lame and the premise of the story is stupid

3-0 out of 5 stars Minnie and Moo Save the Earth just average.
After my kids and I giggled through Minnie and Moo go to the Moon, we were eager for more adventures of these hilarious cows. In Minnie and Moo Save the Earth, we were a little disappointed. In the story Minnie and Moo are lounging in the farmer's hot tub when they see a comet that appears to land on the hill nearby. It is actually an alien space craft whose passengers believe Minnie and Moo are gigantic earth inhabitants. The hilarity in the first book stemed from the cows interpretation of events. For example, the farmer they believe cannot drive the tractor without his boots and hat. Therefore, they reason if they can wear the boots and hat they too can drive the tractor (very "far side"). This book was just lacking in the same silliness. However, the illustrations were great! ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Good book
The only reason I gave it 4 instead of 5 stars is that my husband and duaghters don't seem to like it as much as Sheep in a Jeep. I found it charming, well illustrated and well told.

I was disappointed that it was a paperback and not a board book. I might not have bought it if I had realized that because my daughters are a bit rough on books.

4-0 out of 5 stars to thine own self be true
This is probably my #2 pick of the Shaw/Apple sheep series (Sheep in a Jeep is my clear #1 pick, and that of most of the toddlers I know.)

This one has the most apparent message, which is both a positive (because I like the message) and a distraction from the silly fun of the sheep.

It's definitely worth geeting and reading mre than one of the sheep books, in part so you can learn the distinct personalities of the various sheep.

5-0 out of 5 stars LIKE SHEEP IN A CHINA SHOP
I love those funny sheep and the clever illustrations that accompany their humorous verse. This time, the jeep loving joy riding sheep are back in a tea shop and that tea shop will never be the same!

The verse is one all ages will appreciate. The story moves along fast enough to maintain the interest of pre-schoolers. The adorable sheep and the very funny story will certainly delight all readers.

5-0 out of 5 stars charming--great fun
I bought this book for my 18-month old. It's still a bit beyond her--she's still very into the lift-and-peek books. From mommy's perspective, however, I can say that this is one of the most inventive, clever stories I've read. The illustrations of the disgusted kitties make me laugh out loud every time I read the book, and the rhymes are sweet and funny.

4-0 out of 5 stars very cute, fun to read aloud
This is my favorite of the sheep books, with sheep in a jeep ranking close behind. The rhymes are simple and fun to read aloud. The vocabulary is challenging for a preschooler. The illustrations are clever. However, I pick it to read aloud more often than my daughter does. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars A stunning first book written by a talented FABULOUS author!
Krebs has written a delightful book that brings to life a glowing glimpse of "The Beeman." Seen through the eyes of a grandchild, this book invokes a warm town as gentle bee-keeping facts are given. Her book is an excellent addition to a family library or a classroom's apiary unit. I can't wait to see her other books.

5-0 out of 5 stars A honey of a book
This warm, appealing picture book about bee-keeping (and grandparenting) is a delight from beginning to end. The text is spare and rhythmic, perfect for reading aloud, and the illustrations are full of bright colors and cheerfully inviting. Bees tend to fascinate young children, even if they frighten them; this book offers an insightful, reassuring look at the pleasures of bee-keeping for a little girl and her grandfather. ... 4-0 out of 5 stars This is a cool funny book!!
This book is so cool, i recommend this book for readers who enjoy farm life and animals who lives on the farm, If I would rate this book on a 5-point scale, I would say it would be a 4..because the pictures could have been colourful instead of black and white, but overall I liked this book. Bye!

5-0 out of 5 stars Loved it!
This is an excellent book by an excellent author. I've never been disappointed in one of his books and this is one of his best! I wish it could have been longer or that there were a sequel to it. The main characters are Farmer Tubbs and a lot of animals that live on his farm. I recomment this book for anyone who likes pigs, animals, or humorous stories. It's probably more of a child's book, but I think everyone would enjoy it.

5-0 out of 5 stars Extraordinary!!
This book is very exciting I learned about how ACE the pig can communicate with his owner. He has alot of adventures. I would reccommend this book to any age I think it would brighten anyone`s day to hear about a big fat pig that made me laugh. It`s a book that you can`t put down but sometimes you have to . I would give it five golden stars. ACE the pig, Nanny the lamb and Megan, are all the people that live on Ted Tubbs Farm. ACE isn`t an ordinary pig If you want to find out why, you should read this book.

5-0 out of 5 stars Ace: The House Pig
This is another Dick King-Smith favorite of many people. This author has a way with words..............especially with Ace; he can understand HUMAN WORDS! He and his owner share a bond somehow; they can "understand" each other. Named Ace after the Ace of clubs (because he has a club-shaped birthmark), he doesn't want to go where his brothers and sisters are going, and he's prepared to do anything as long as he doesn't have to......he doesn't really have to do anything, though because of his talent, although he DOES makes peace with the farmer's pets, Megan & Clarence. Ace, along with lots of other King-Smith's pigs, is better than E.B. White's Wilbur.

5-0 out of 5 stars Ace: The Very Important Pig
This book will have you laughing down the aisle. It is a wonderful tale of a pig who can understand what his owner says. Ace can also let his owner know what he wants through grunts and squeals. Follow Ace from his pen to his television debut. This book is great for children of all ages, even adults. ... Read more
