5-0 out of 5 stars With this DK book you can both look and learn about horses
Having spent this week watching "Seabiscuit," "The Story of Seabiscuit," and "Seabiscuit: The Lost Documentary," it seemed like this would be a good time to find out more about the world of horses. My experience with horses in the real world is rather limited (I rode one on a Caribbean island, but it knew I was a weak master and did not want to obey). Fortunately, Juliet Clutton-Brock's look at "Horses" for the Dorling Kindersley Eyewitness Books series provides an informative guide to the world of horses and ponies.

There is a lot of information crammed into this volume, beginning with the first paragraph describing the horse family where we learn that the nearest relative to horses, asses, and zebras are the rhinoceroses and tapirs, and that a pony is a horse that has a height of less than 14.2 hands. The spectrum is demonstrated with a picture of the Shetland pony (8 hands) next to a Shire horse (19.2 hands). As is always the case with these DK Eyewitness volumes, each chapter consists of a two-page spread offering one main paragraph of text and then a series of illustrations with detailed captions. Clutton-Brock covers how horses evolved, looks at some of their ancient ancestors, and shows how the teeth change over the life of the horse. The bulk of the book looks at the various types of horses, from donkeys, mules and hinnies to war-horses, heavy horses, and sporting horses, as well as the various jobs horses have had in human history. Young readers will learn about the names for the different colors of horses and their markings, as well as how the horse changed life in North America once they were reintroduced by Columbus. As always the rich illustrations will get a lot of the attention, showing us ancient art depicting horses, dozens of different breeds, and a wide variety of the vehicles that horses have drawn.

About the only thing that seems to be missing from this rather comprehensive introduction to the horse are mention and pictures of some of the more famous horses from history. But you will not find mention or a picture of the likes of Secretariat or Man-O-War within these pages. When we are shown a horse whose name is remembered, such as Bucephalus, Rosinante, Black Bess, and Marnego, it is because of their riders (Alexander the Great, Don Quixote, Dick Turpin, and Napoleon Bonaparate respectively). But then, it was the famous horses of history and fiction, from Traveler to the Black Stallion, that I already knew about before I picked up this look at "Horses," so it is hard to criticize a book for performing its main function of providing new information instead of telling you what you already know. Whatever you know about horses, this book will teach you more.

5-0 out of 5 stars Picture Perfect -Horse of course
This is a well planned and wonderfully illustrated book on horses, with many great rare photos of exotic members of the horse family. I was truly delighted to find good close up pictures of equines that are on the endangered list and and text written in easy to understand english. For the child or the adult this is a must for the horseman's library. ... Read more

Book Description

Cowboy Gene loves his eight cows, and Cowgirl Sue loves her eight cows, and both of them like the fence that keeps their pastures--and cows--apart. But then a tornado blows through and takes the fence with it. The cows are mixed up, and Sue and Gene are in a muddle. Will they ever be able to figure out whose cows are whose?
An all-singing, all-dancing, hard-riding, and high-romancing story of a lasso-tossin' cowgirl, a tough-as-jerky cowboy, and the two herds of do-si-do-ing, polka-prancing, high-stepping heifers that bring them together.

5-0 out of 5 stars Sixteen Cows is aswesome!
I am not sure who enjoys this book more...me or my children! I love reading the rhyming verses and getting my kids involved by "Mooing". It's fun, the illustrations are great, and it's easily become a favorite book in our house!!!

4-0 out of 5 stars A rootin'-tootin' good read!
"Sixteen Cows" is one of those rare children's books that is not only fun for the kiddies, but may actually be more amusing for the adult reading it.

Lonely Cowboy Gene and lovely Cowgirl Sue share a fence, but despite their neighborliness and like herds of eight humorously named bovines, a bit of competition keeps the two at odds. The deus ex machina of a tornado rips down the fence and the cows do the rest, intermingling hopelessly, while refusing to hear the calls to come back to their respective sides. Forced to cooperate, the rival cowpokes finally drop the competition and work together. Can love be far behind?

Clearly there is plenty to like in the book. Many kids' picture books fall down in the text, but not here. Lisa Wheeler's long rhymes capture the reader's heart and flow nicely, complemented well by the sprawling, glowing, watercolor images of Kurt Cyrus. Together there is a synergy that makes this book oddly compelling. Little humorous touches abound - such as the cow names and the items tossed up by the tornado - that may mean more to adults than kids, so while my toddler son likes the book, his dad enjoys it even more. (At the cost of a star, the backstory of the book may be lost on the very young, who may not fully grasp love stories and weddings.)

With its large illustrations and silly/sweet story, this paean to the prairie is clearly designed to be read out loud and often. So pick out your best West Texas drawl, mosey on up to your favorite lil' pardner, and share the fun of "Sixteen Cows."

5-0 out of 5 stars A Rootin' Tootin' Good Time.....
Meet Cowboy Gene Biddle and Cowgirl Sue Waddle, neighbors and cow lovers, living peacefully on the western prairie. Each went about their daily ranch chores until it was time to call their cows home. Then with a loud and strong voice, each would sing their "come-home song," calling every cow by name. "Now Waddle Ranch was on a hill and sat right next to Biddle./And where each ranch's pasture met, a fence ran down the middle./So Biddle cows and Waddle cows were not in any danger/of getting mixed at grazing time and dining with a stranger." That is, until a fierce Arkansas wind blew that old fence "plumb clean away." Now with their cows all mixed up, what are a couple of cowpokes going to do to separate their herds and bring them home..... Lisa Wheeler's spirited and engaging, happily ever after, good-time story, complete with western dialogue, begs to be read aloud. Her entertaining, rhyming text is full of energy, humor, and wild west fun. Kurt Cyrus' bold and busy artwork captures the story beautifully, and is rich in expressive and charming detail. Together this duo have authored a playful and silly "love story" that is sure to keep your little cowpokes smiling and giggling to the very last page. So find out how sixteen cows finally brought these two lonely ranchers together, and enjoy.

5-0 out of 5 stars Romantic fun!
Our family loves this book! The rhyming text is an absolute delight to read aloud, and the story line is so much fun. The bridesmaid cows are hilarious. (Makes me want to go out and buy a cow!) This book will be read over and over again in our house. YEEHAW!

5-0 out of 5 stars ***SIXTEEN STARS***
Sixteen Cows is full of high-steppin' fun! Cowboy Gene and Cow Girls Sue's herds of cows get all mixed up one afternoon when a twister blows their fences down. Hilarity ensues as these two ranchers try to call their cows home. Lisa Wheeler's rhyming cattle calls are a hoot. My kids love reciting all of the clever cow names... "Sunflower! Baby Face! Button Eyes! Charlotte Grace! Jelly Roll! Peekaboo! Cinderbox! Bobbie Lou!"

Kurt Cyrus's beautiful, rich illustrations are breathtaking and add to the fun of this wild western lovestory.

It's Thanksgiving morning and Minnie and Moo, beloved bovines of Minnie and Moo and the Musk ofZorro and Minnie and MooGo to Paris, are sipping cocoa and eating cream puffs under an oak tree."We have so much to be thankful for," says Moo, "and yet I feel a sadness in theair." Her reverie is interrupted by the appearance of Zeke and Zack, two turkeyslurking in the tall grass nearby. "Hide us," they beg. Minnie and Moo directthem (and their 36 suddenly materializing friends) up the oak tree, and thefloodgates open. It's the chickens next. "The food chain... get it? No turkey...chicken is next," says the cocky rooster. Soon the chickens are up the tree, andthen a duck, six geese, two pigs, a flock of sheep, and an ostrich. When thefarmers finally arrive for their Thanksgiving picnic (with a tofu loaf shapedlike a turkey), they discover the first-ever Thanksgiving tree, whichmysteriously produces ostrich eggs and milk on demand. By the end of the day, everyone has plenty to be thankful for, and no one on the food chain (except thetofu) has been consumed.

5-0 out of 5 stars A breakthrough for vegetarians! :)
My grandchidren (4 & 5) and I are Minnie and Moo addicts. We laugh a lot when we read these books together. This Thanksgiving story is no disappointment. The idea of all these animals in the "old oak tree" is funny enough. Then, when the Farmers bring their guests to the tree for a Thanksgiving picnic we had tears in our eyes from laughing.

These books are wonderful read alouds as well as great beginning reader stories. You will want more after reading this book.It is tied with "Night of the Living Bed" in our house.

5-0 out of 5 stars I have a soft spot for cream puff addicted cows . . .
I love Minnie and Moo. Who could resist a cream puff addicted cow? Not me. Anyway, like the other books in the "Minnie and Moo" universe this is another story filled with silly fun and is quirkily different from most Thanksgiving stories. It's Thanksgiving and bovines Minnie and Moo are relaxing beneath a tree sipping away on hot cocoa and nibbling on cream puffs when thirty-six frantic turkeys beg need of their help. It's Thanksgiving and Mrs. Farmer's cousins are about for a visit. The turkeys, being turkeys, fear for their lives! Minnie and Moo hide the tribe of turkeys in the tree and settle in to finish their snack when they're accosted by a rather rude rooster and his flock of chickens who demand help. They're next in line in the food chain, you see. Before you know it Minnie and Moo have quite the zoo hidden within the tree. Happy chaos ensues as the farmer and his family decide to picnic beneath the tree.

Light, fluffy and filled with laughs this a good pick if your brain is a little drained and the kids are stressed.

5-0 out of 5 stars Minnie and Moo and the Thanksgiving Tree
This humourous and clever Thanksgiving tale leaves you chuckling about another cow mishap!!My preschool and early elementary children are valiant followers of Minnie and Moo.So when almost all the animals on the farm end up in a most unpredictable place, the kids read fast to the finish line to see how the cows will resolve the mess they cook up. It's delightful and does the trick to entrance my kids to read a good story more than once. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars A Pig Who Believed in Himself
This book is great for ages 3-7. Dumpy wants to be a dancer but no one thinks he should be because he is a pig. This book has very good illustrations and is very easy to read. At the end EVERYBODY starts to dance! That is why we gave it five stars.

5-0 out of 5 stars Delightful new children's classic!
I have given this book several times to children in the 6-8 year range and all have enjoyed it thoroughly (especially children who like to dance). The verse is delightful, the animals charming, and the message is very positive. If you want to give a gift but are afraid that the child has many of the older classic picture books, this one is a great choice.

5-0 out of 5 stars A wonderful story
This is a great book for kids, adults and music lovers. The story is a good lesson in believing in your dreams and trying to achieve them! Despite who you are or what you are, you can do most anything. This story has become one of our family favorite read-aloud books! Buy one for your favorite music teacher, too!

5-0 out of 5 stars Dumpy LA Rue
Dumpy La Rue is a fun book. I read it to a group of third graders and they loved the rhyming words and thought of more that would rhyme with them. The loved the pictures as well as the story. They wanted me to read it to them again and again!

5-0 out of 5 stars Fabulous!
Barnyard animals dancing, prancing, and spinning about! What is this clever book all about? A pig who wants to dance. Everyone tells him what he "should" be doing, or what "pigs" or "boys" do, but nobody lets him just be himself.

So, the rhyme isn't always perfect, but the words are still lively and fun. Kids probably won't notice that they are forced on occasion, as the story and illustrations will carry it through a few stumbles.

This book appeals to children and adults! Wonderful writing, fantastic illustrations, and fun, fun, fun for kids! Oh yes, and the very subtle, hidden message to kids: Don't let others discourage you from living your dreams! Be yourself! (Others just might follow your lead!)

Fantastic! One of the best books I have read to my kids in a long time! ... Read more

Book Description

Udderly hilarious!

Minnie and Moo are back in two new tales, the latest in the series that the Bulletin of the Center for Children's Books called "the cream of the beginning-reader crop."Moo longs for the days of heroes, the days of the derring-do of good-deed doers. As Juanita del Zorro del Moo and Dolores del Zorro del Minnie, our heroes roam the farm armed with an aerosol can of Zorro musk and a barbecue skewer, attempting to rescue the downtrodden. Can they free the chickens from the oppression of the rooster? Can they free the farmer's long underwear from being hung on the clothesline? Can they mind their own business? Of course not...they're Minnie and Moo. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Hilarious!
The Minnie and Moo books are some of the funniest I've ever read. I'm 48 and my daughter is 8, and I don't know who enjoys them more! We quote them all the time, and, after reading the library's copies, we're buying our own so we can always have them around to share the laughter. Thank you, Denys Cazet!

5-0 out of 5 stars We Could be Heroes--Just for One Day
This is a zany, beautifully illustrated children's book that will have most adults laughing as well.

Minnie and Moo are two cows whose main gift is the ability to give a gallon of milk each day. But Moo, wanting more, and inspired by a book of heroes called "The Musk of Zorro," persuades Minnie that they should and could be heroes. They take their cues from a misread "Zorro" book (or a version written just for cows): "Who was 'Zorro'?" Minnie asked. "A famous bull," said Moo. "...he dressed in black and scared away the bad guys with a sword...he marked their shoots with the letter Z." "I'll bet that scared then," said Minnie. [Get ready for punch line:] "That, and the smell, said Moo. The musk of Zorro put fear in their hearts."

So, armed with salvaged costumes. A sword attached to lipstick (to the notorious "Z" on the bad guys), and some deodorant substituting for the musk of Zorro, our two bovine heroines courageously and mistakenly battle a chicken (they thought it was "a fox"), and some pajamas hanging to dry ("bad guys"). While the ending is a little week, it conveys books' potential for imaginative adventure. With 48 pages, colorful illustrations, and two loveable cows featured in other Dorling Kindersley books. Recommended by DK for grades 1-3, this is a very funny book.

5-0 out of 5 stars We need more heroes like these!
After reading one too many books out in the fields, two cows allow their imaginations to get the best of them in this hysterical romp through the barnyard. Moo convinces Minnie that their farm is in need of some heroes, so the two bovines assume "exotic" names and, with the help of an old lipstick and a can of underarm deodorant, set out to save the world. Bright pencil and watercolor illustrations capture the cows as they liberate the chickens from the rooster, and save the world from the farmer's long underwear. Meanwhile they start a feud between the farmer's wife and her neighbor. The latest installment in the Minnie and Moo series is, like its predecessors, a wildly funny look at the misadventures of two overly imaginative bovines. This is a great addition to the early reader library for high-interest, low-level readers and others who will laugh out loud at the story and illustrations by award-winning author Cazet. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars If you like Border Collies...
A must have for Border Collie fanciers! Also makes for a good childrens book in general. The storyline is cute, the illustrations from cover to cover are beautiful, and the artist depicts the breed characteristics splendidly. I highly recommend it!

5-0 out of 5 stars A good book for a toddler's bedtime
My youngest very much enjoyed having the Kim Lewis books read to him from the ages of about one to four. They were his favourite books.
Kim Lewis started writing the books when her children were young because she could not find any books that showed farming as she thought it ought to be showed. The scenes reflect the Northumberland countryside where her husband is a sheep farmer. The children in the books are her children. Floss is/was their dog Fly.
They are a nice timeless read.

4-0 out of 5 stars Just Like Floss
I recently purchased Just Like Floss for my 4 year old, and it has become an instant favorite. Just like Floss tells the story of a border collie and her pups, and how the children on the farm go about chosing the puppy they will keep. The illustrations are beautiful, and the story line is one that all will enjoy. It reveals to even the very young reader, some of the characteristics of border collies. Having owned a border collie on a working farm, I enjoy reading this book to my daughter, as it brings back pleasant memories for her. I reccomend Just like Floss to owners of border collies or the general dog enthusiast. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Fun touchable picture book about a baby lamb's adventures
Little Lamb is a nice large picture book for children with pretty watercolor illustrations. The story is a very common one; baby animal plays with others, wanders off while exploring and is suddenly lost. Kind of mediocre in my humble opinion.
But you don't buy this book for the plot! No, the big draw for Little Lamb is the fascinating flocked pages that give a fun, fuzzy feel and matte appearance to only certain areas of the pictures. Every page has something to discover as kids have to touch all over to discover what parts are fuzzy and which are smooth. The lambs are always flocked of course, and other bugs, flowers and animals that should feel furry or soft to the touch are flocked, too. This will help to teach very little ones about the textures of nature.
I thought this would be a great book to add to the Easter selection on our coffee table. It doesn't have anything to do with the holiday, but the lamb theme and the pastel colors fit in beautifully. Most importantly, our kids (2 and 5) enjoy it. I can recommend this to anybody whose tots like interactive picture books, such as The Very Hungry Caterpillar by Eric Carle.

5-0 out of 5 stars An Easter book suggestion - could become a family classic!
I read this book in a mall book store today. It has delightful illustrations, in simple but bright colors. Not one of those overly hectic try to impress the art world books. The story is simple, with those repeat sentences that young listeners love to echo...or shout out. The animals have a fuzzy texture. I am ordering this for the grandchildren for Easter! And can't wait to read it to them. ... Read more

Most dairy cows are content to stand and graze and chew. But not Moo.She forsakes her life of "waving wheat" for ocean waves in Lisa Wheeler andPonder Goembel's witty and wonderful rhyming picture book Sailor Moo: Cow atSea. Children will be immediately swept up in the story of a cow who seeksbluer pastures and hoofs it to the bay: "Yo-ho-ho / And a shiver-me-be / Whoeverheard of a cow at sea?" The feline crew of a fishing boat agrees to take Moo onboard if she will pay her way in fresh milk. It's a deal: "Moo loved the way theocean sang. / 'Like moo-sic,' she would utter, / as rocking, rolling ocean waves/ would churn her milk to butter." Once aboard, she befriends her sea cousins, the manatees, which turns out to be fortuitous--when she's thrown overboard in a"sudden, savage gale," they come to her rescue. But, what's this? Thegoggle-sporting sea cows take her to a crusty cattle barge of pirates led by RedAngus! Moo is dismayed: "Moo's heart was pure, so she was sure / it must be amistake. / Looting steers? Cow buccaneers? / She felt her stomachs ache...." Butwhen Red Angus gazes into Moo's eyes, his heart warms and his rough edgessmooth: "In Moo he'd seen his dairy queen / and now he must reform." Adventure, romance, and darn-good storytelling combine with perfect meter, delightful puns(milk it, Lisa!), and fantastically lively, artful, and expressive illustrationsto make this one of our favorite picture books of the year. Highly recommended.(Ages 3 to 7) --Karin Snelson ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Buy This Book!
I've been looking for fun books to read to my 18 mo son and found a gem with "Sailor Moo". The rhythm, the humor, and the story are wonderful. This is a book you won't get tired of reading over and over (like many of the "bestsellers" out there!) This book is well worth the money 100x over!

5-0 out of 5 stars An "udderly" adorable book!!
My 3.5 year old & I first checked this one out from the library. We've since checked it out at least two more times... time to buy our own!! We both enjoy the wonderful & catchy poetry/music. And the illustrations are awesome!! You, of course, need to use your best pirate voice in some places; aaarrrrrgggghhhhh!!!! It's an owner to pass down for your children's children...

5-0 out of 5 stars Another Lisa Wheeler Delight!
"Sailor Moo: Cow at Sea" is another delightful picture book by Lisa Wheeler. This wonderful flowing rhyme tells a wonderful story of the pursuit of dreams, adventure, pirates and romance. Like Lisa's other books "Turk and Runt" and "Wool Gathering, A Sheep Family Reunion", she catches you up in her rhyme and makes you believe it is so. Lisa's sense of humor will make the adults giggle. This book is a must read for everyone young and old. Ponder Goembel was the perfect choice to illustrate this beautiful book.

5-0 out of 5 stars It's "moo-sic" to my 5yr olds ears!
I just checked this book out from the library and my son and I LOVE it so much I'm now ordering it from Amazon. I'm also getting another copy to give as a gift for a friend's son who is also turning 5 years old. I have now found a book I enjoy reading to my child as much as I enjoy reading "Oliva" to him. It's a winner!

Book Description

A spirited, quirky, and thoroughly modern remakeof the classic tale about an industrious henand the gastronomical rewards ofhard work and self-reliance

Kids love pizza, and they will love this cleverly illustrated, up-to-date retelling of the traditional Little Red Hen story. In this new version, the intrepid fowl spies a can of tomato sauce in her cupboard and knows it's time to make a lovely little pizza.

Children will enjoy following the process of making a pizza as the Little Red Hen--who can get no help from the duck, the dog, or the cat--buys an appropriate pan, kneads the dough, cuts and chops vegetables (and other stuff) for a fabulous topping, and bakes a humongous pizza ("It was lovely, but it wasn't little"). Despite many a "Not I," the duck, the dog, and the cat finally do help out (of course) in ways that will surprise and delight young readers.

Amy Walrod's exuberant, witty cut-paper art combines interesting composition with humorous expression and detail to create a world that gives a special accent to the offbeat adaptation.

5-0 out of 5 stars This book is GREAT!
This is a great twist on the story the little red hen. Instead of making a loaf of bread the little red hen is making a pizza and no one will help her. The pictures in this book are really interesting, they look like they were all formed from paper cut outs and there are lots of other abstract things going on in the pictures as well to discuss with your child. What my son and I love most about this book is that he can help tell the story. He loves the repetitiveness of the story and this book teaches children a wonderful lesson about sharing. I can't say enough good things about this book!

5-0 out of 5 stars A NEW LESSON FOR CHILDREN
I THINK THAT THE "UPDATED" VERSION OF THE LITTLE RED HEN HAS AN IMPORTANT LESSON, YES, WE ALL KNOW THAT IF YOU DON'T HELP, THEN YOU DON'T GET TO SHARE IN THE FINISHED PRODUCT, BUT THIS LESSON IS SHARING. THE LITTLE RED HEN HAS MORE THAN ENOUGH FOR HERSELF, SO IN THE END, EVEN THOUGH HER FRIENDS DIDN'T HELP, SHE SHARES. AND HOW MANY CHILDREN COULDN'T USE ANOTHER LESSON IN SHARING. THE ILLUSTRATIONS ARE EYE CATCHING, THE STORY IS GREAT. I LOVE THIS BOOK AS MUCH AS THE ORIGINAL. THIS IS NOT A REPLACEMENT ON THE FIRST, IT IS AN ADDITION.

5-0 out of 5 stars A charming hen
The Little Red Hen Makes a Pizza is a wonderful book terrifically illustrated in a memorable style. I loved reading this story to my girls. The Little Red Hen would be a charming friend (and neighbor) and makes a great addition to a bookshelf.

3-0 out of 5 stars A moral story with a new moral
I read this book to a student during some volunteer work. While I liked the way the classic story had been made more urban in order to be more associational for many readers, I was disappointed in two places.

The first is a little trivial, when the Hen needs cheese, it mentions all the cheese she has, including string cheese, but no mozzarella. Unfortunately, string cheese is mozzarella.

But my real problem is that the original moral of the story, that the lazy animals do not benefit from the Hen's hard work. Instead they all get some pizza and are guilt-tripped into helping clean up.

While I can accept the change in scenery (and pizza instead of bread), I have a hard time accepting that the moral has been changed.

5-0 out of 5 stars A teacher and mother
I read The Little Red Hen to my first grade students after my 4 year old came home from school reciting it. When I found this book, I read it to my class and they loved it. I was able to use a venn diagram to compare the two stories. It is a very cute book and the end surpised them! ... Read more
