3-0 out of 5 stars Curious George
I like the Curious George books alot. Ever since I was little I can remember being read to Curious George books. They are funny books about a little monkey and I think thats why kids enjoy them, but they are kind of long and I think they might not hold kids attention for just being one story.

5-0 out of 5 stars This book is good for anyone.
I liked this book because it reminds me of me when I was a kid. I was very curious and I got in lots of trouble and my parents still loved me like the man in the yellow hat always loved George.

5-0 out of 5 stars A classic
No, your kids won't learn how to save the world from this book but it will make them laugh and they'll enjoy reading it. I think the lesson here is more that despite getting into trouble for being a silly little monkey, George can always count on the unconditional love of the Man in the Big Yellow Hat.

3-0 out of 5 stars Flies a Kite
This book doesn't really teach kids like some of the other books. The book is about a mokey, and it is always getting into trouble but never facing the consiqunces. I real life young kids are courious but they don't always excape like in the book. This book is a good adventure book but not a good learning book

2-0 out of 5 stars Not Good Ideals for our Children
Curious George always seems to be getting into incredible trouble, yet he always seems to escape the consequences. This book is giving our children an unreal view of how the consequences of their actions can be avoided. Curious George rates highly on the literature scale, but when reading this book to our children, they need to understand that the adventures George gets himself into are fictional. They need to understand that we need to be responsible for our actions, and consequences are needed to develop their moral character. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Reading is fun
This book is awesome!! Funny too. The reason i think it is funny is because the older brother puts his younger sister to the test on reading and he thinks she cant do it because she is younger. But then she proves him wrong and reads 10 words. And the deal was if she read 10 words he would buy her an ice cream cone. And she did so he bought her one. In the end it turns out the younger one can read and seems more smarter than the older one!

4-0 out of 5 stars A little fun between bro and sis.
In this book Arthur and his sister D.W. have a reading contest to see if she could really read. So D.W. could read after all and Arthur ended up taking back what he said about her. He said she couldn't read but he didn't know she could.

5-0 out of 5 stars Brilliant use of a simple medium to teach children to read.
One of many books in the Arthur series, Arthur's Reading Race, is extremely well designed, using stickers to ecourage and assist in the reading and learning of new words. On almost every page there is a word writen in blue which the child must match with a sticker. The kinestic activity of tieing the visual cue to the word enhances the learning process. Thematically, Marc Brown, couldn't have been more apropo, using the much loved Arthur character to challenge his younger sister, D.W., to read ten words. New readers, identifying with D.W., are immediately invested in discovering whether the novice is successful in meeting her older brother's challenge. Marc Brown, does not dissappoint his young fans, as D.W. manages to read ten words and receives her reward (an ice-cream). Brown uses humor extremely well eliciting delighted giggles from young readers as they follow D.W. and Arthur on this immaginative and educational journey. Other bonuses include a review activity, an additional sticker page which allows the child to create their own story, as well as excellent ideas/advice in a "Note to Parents" page.Unfortunately, this is one of very few Arthur: Step into reading books which I have been able to locate which offer the stickers and all the asociated activities. -Victoria Romani ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Curious George Strikes Again
Curious George and the Hot Air Balloon is another charming example of the magic Margret and H.A. Rey weave. Children will find this book enchanting. They will identify with George's curiousity, which causes trouble, and cheer when he saves the day. I enjoyed the delightful pictures. 5-0 out of 5 stars Good Lord, this brings back memories.
As a preteen I read every "Freddy the Pig" book except "The Clockwork Twins" and that only because my library couldn't find a copy of it. Reading these in order was one of the highlights of my trips to the local library. I'm delighted to see them being re-released in mass market editions. They are absolutely timeless and priceless additions to any child's collection.

4-0 out of 5 stars Freddy Takes Off
While not the best of the stories about Freddy the Pig, this novel is one of the better ones, coming at the end of the middle cycle. The first few books, while entertaining, were before Brooks really reached his stride as a writer, and shortly after this book he was coming down from his peak. Besides exploring outer space with several friends, Freddy must also help save the Bean family from inlaws who make a plague of locusts look like fun. Even Brooks'least Freddy book is head and shoulders above most other children's books, and most can be enjoyed by adults as well.

5-0 out of 5 stars 5 stars for Brooks
These books are the hidden gems of children's literature in the United States. They are all so warm, smart and fabulously funny. Freddy and the Space Ship is no exception. It sounds like a cliche, but these novels truly embody the spirit of timelessness. They are all a delight. Freddy and the Space Ship continues the formula, providing witty insights and familiar old characters to a new and exciting, albeit naive, story. Wonderful books. Every child, or child at heart should own one. ... Read more

I think Arthur Meets The President is a great book because the book was interesting and it's very fun to read. I like Marc Brown books because they're fun to read and I really understand the books that I read.

3-0 out of 5 stars Introduction to the President.
Arthur is so popular that my students tell me the names of the characters. This book will assist me in introducing the president and his role in the US government.

4-0 out of 5 stars Great Set Induction for lesson!
This book is a fantastic set induction to a unit or lesson on Presidents. The author provides a creative storyline to get the students interested in Presidents. The book disscusses a variety of different subjects relating to the president such as, the White House, diffferent sights in Washington, and how kids can write to the President and get a response. It can also be used to reinforce appropriate letter-writing structure. I recommend this book to anyone who wants to make the subject a little more fun for children. Of course, it is filled with fun stuff between Arthur, his pesty sister D.W., and friends.

5-0 out of 5 stars Everyone loves Arthur
I am a 1st grade teacher. My class and I always enjoy finding out about Arthur and his friends in the books written by Marc Brown. I especially like Arthur Meets the President. It's Christmas Eve and Miss Spider should be feeling full of cheer. But even in her cozy home, among wrapped gifts and the brightly decorated tree, there's something missing. It isn't until Miss Spider finds a friend with whom to share the joy of the season that her one Christmas wish comes true.

David Kirk's much-loved Little Miss Spider (Little Miss Spider, Little Miss Spider at Sunnypatch School, etc.) continues to warm the hearts of her fans in this touching, jolly holiday tale. Young readers will enjoy the image of Miss Spider and her new friend Asparagus Beetle making "snow butterflies" (like our snow angels, but made with lots more legs) and dashing through snow tunnels "mined by the mice." Kirk's startling and shiny illustrations complement his singsong verses to present this tender Christmas message of compassion and friendship. (Ages 4 to 7) --Emilie Coulter ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Christmas Storyteller
My little niece literally devours the Little Miss Spider series -- and sometimes, no review beats a two year old's reaction. On glossy paper rich with colors and gorgeous illustration, the simple story of Little Miss Spider on yet another adventure hypnotizes my little niece. This book is great for any young child who loves to read and enjoys being read to. Simple word play and rhymes are fun and interesting. The book itself is very small so it can be handled easier with children's hands and additionally, it isn't too long to induce tedium or boredom. All in all, it's a great little stocking stuffer.

5-0 out of 5 stars Oh what fun!
This was a cute and fun little book. It's wonderful and at this price you can't go wrong!

5-0 out of 5 stars people's instructor
A wonderfully written little trip from the beginning of... well, everything right through to the ascendancy of humans. Bryson's mastery of language and his ability to turn a phrase are put to good use in taking a look at the theories and science behind astrophysics, geology, archeology, paleontology, and several other "ologies" as well. The best part is that Bryson manages to cover all this without being boring or overly breezey.
Almost everyone will find some part of this book interesting. Even if you weren't a straight A student in science class back in high school or college, the bits of science you do know are probably woven into the grander tapestry of science and time in a way you'll appreciate.

5-0 out of 5 stars Funny and Cute
If you're feeling a little down, or just in the mood for a little laugh this is the perfect book for it. Filled with little wisdoms this book is funny and cute. They really made my laugh and some of them I could relate to. This book is filled with pictures from the old books, and if you've read them, or seen the old cartoons you might recongnize some of these senarios. One of my favorites is:

"If you are trying to find your way home, and keep finding yourself instead back at the same sand-pit, it may be that the sand-pit is following you about."

The book is filled with cute little wisdoms like that, many that are funnier. I really enjoyed the book, and I think everyone will.

5-0 out of 5 stars The simple things in life
I thought that this book was adorable and very sweet. It's perfect for all ages and it makes you notice the simple things in life and that sometimes people make things more complicated than they need to be. Winnie the Pooh definetly has the best advice on how to live a wonderful life and realize what is really important - friendship.

5-0 out of 5 stars This Book Is Funny!
This story is about Arthur going to a summer camp. He is nervous about going and gets homesick. He feels lonely at camp. At the end of the story he helps his team win and he finally loves camp. We liked this book because we love Arthur stories.

4-0 out of 5 stars Homesickness
This book tells about the time Arthur's parents decided to send him off to camp. Arthur isn't sure he wants to go, and is a bit homesick. The children at camp play pranks like setting off smoke bombs, putting frogs in people's beds, and hiding their clothes. Arthur writes home postcards about how lonely he is. He still manages to enjoy himself somewhat, however, when he helps his team win the intercamp scavenger hunt. Arthur fans may get a kick out of this book, as well as kids who dream of going to summer camp. The book about 700 words.

5-0 out of 5 stars Arthur goes to camp
This was a great book. It was about-facing fears and doing something you don't think you would like. Arthur has to go to camp and he thinks its horrible then he gets there and it starts out bad then gets better as soon as they figure out whose trying to scare them. They end up scaring them right back and winning the scavenger hunt and he has a great time. I think this is for ages 5-10. It teaches kids know matter how bad u may think something is it may not turn out so bad.

4-0 out of 5 stars Arthur Goes To Camp
In this book Arthur's parents send him to a summer camp with a few of his friends. Arthur wasn't pleased with the idea of spending a summer at camp and it seemed to only get worse. When spooky thing starting happening, the campers decided to investigate, and find out who had been playing the tricks on them, and at the same time, have fun. The book wasn't a bad read, kids between the ages of 3 and 5 would most likely enjoy it.

3-0 out of 5 stars Arthur Goes to Camp (Cloth)
This book gets three stars primarily because we love Arthur. This story, however, seems a little short changed. It appears that the text version cannot due justice to the idea of Arthur finally feeling comfortable at camp. Arthurs change of heart at the end is a little to quick for the kids to process comfortably. The illistrations are wonderful as always. ... Read more

We have made a game of anticipating what will appear with each tab pulled, and both my husband and I are amazed at our daughters ability to comprehend and memorize the different body parts and their function. Eloise gets more outlandish with each book in Kay Thompson and Hilary Knight's popular 1950s series. First published in 1951--when cold war sentiments were heating up--Eloise in Moscow showcases the highly undiplomatic exploits of our favorite precocious 6-year-old as she paints the town red with her beloved Nanny. Adults will relish this glimpse behind the Iron Curtain, complete with a foldout spread of the Kremlin that is positively suitable for framing ("Here's what they/ have in the Kremlin/ armor Easter eggs/ icons/ and clocks," "Ivan is terrible/ and is watching in this tower"). The usual pink, black, and white color scheme is absent here--Knight's pen-and-ink drawings are instead accented with a rich goldenrod, and in the foldout Kremlin, even oranges and greens.

After a three-week stay in Moscow with her colleague Hilary Knight, Kay Thompson had plenty of fodder for her distinctly Eloisian travelogue: the food ("It is difficult to know what to eat in Moscow/ There is no melon in season/ Nichevo"); the stilted English of their tour guide ("That house is Chekhov/ That house is Stanislavsky if you want to see it/ Noyou cannot it is reconstruction"); national security ("Our telephone had quite a bit of static/ so we talked about General de Gaulle/ to throw them off track/ Everybody listens to everything in Moscow"); and even the water ("The water is Russian so I brushed my teeth/ with/ pear lemonade and apple lemonade/ Actually I preferred/ the pear").

Children will be fascinated by the intricate, delicately skritched details of this 72-page picture book, but adults will surely be the most amused. Fortunately, in the wake of Eloise's Russian junket, the Kremlin wall is left standing, and there are no international repercussions. But is she, as she haughtily declares, an "absolutely darling little sweetnik"? Definitely nyet. And that's the way we like her. If your Eloise library is incomplete, which would be sad, be sure to investigate Eloise in Paris; Eloise at Christmastime; The Absolutely Essential Eloise (complete with historical scrapbook); or the original recipe, Eloise. 5-0 out of 5 stars Lite history of the Cold War
My girls and I love the Eloise series, this one included. The age group to understand this book is a bit older than the others, say 11 or 12. All the cold war references led to interesting discussions of the cold war and the failure of Communism.

On the light side this book reads very well out loud. It helps if you have a deep voice to say as the intra tourist guide "IS POSSIBLE TO SEE BOOK REVIEWS HERE." "IS NOT POSSIBLE TO HOLD BOOKS, BOOKS ARE SENT AFTER BOUGHT" (While not a quote from the book, it reads like it.)

The book's view of the world does feel dated. It's like reading a Cowboys vs Indian's book and having to explain that perhaps not all is as it appears. Russia is not what it was, but it's not the west yet.

The quality of the paper and the binding are excellent, it feels like it will last for multiple reading. There is a nice foldout of the Kremlin. Like all the Eloise books, the drawings are inked in one color, this one uses yellow to great effect. The paper jacket is an exact copy of the hard cover underneath which is great as the text on it is wonderful.

If you like the other Eloise books, you'll like this one.

5-0 out of 5 stars Do I recommend this book? "Oh Definitely Da."
Get out your woolies and fur hats, Eloise is going to Moscow! In the funniest of Eloise's many escapades, she travels to the Russia of the 1950s with Nanny, Winnie, and Skipperdee in tow. Apart from her usual hotel antics, including spying on the other guests and dinning on black caviar from the Caspian Sea, Eloise has many mischievous adventures at the Bolshoi Ballet, Red Square, and inside the Kremlin. While young children will not understand all the humor in this and other Eloise books, they certainly still love the outrageous heroine Eloise, who's expressions and intentions are so vividly portrayed by Hilary Knight's illustrations. Eloise in Moscow continues Kay Thompson and Hilary Knight's tradition of hilarious books for precocious grown-ups.

5-0 out of 5 stars Eloise Is Back
Eloise is back and more mischevious than ever. This time Eloise, Nanny, Weenie (her dog who looks like a cat), and Skipperdee (her turtle) are in Moscow. Eloise visits the ballet, and has a tour guide, but thinks someone is spying on her. "As you know there's no privacy in Moscow."

This is a must have for anyone's Eloise collection. So buy a copy, and charge it please.

5-0 out of 5 stars Moscow relived
As an Ex-Pat living in Moscow during 2001, I wanted a book to share with the little ones we know in the United States. This book is not only funny bit accurate. The middle pull out of the Kremlin is supurb and everyone who has received it from us has loved it. I have a copy of one myself so I can look back on my experiences living here and laugh at some of the same ones Eloise and I have had.

4-0 out of 5 stars Historical fun!
Children will love the comical adventures of everyone's favorite six-year-old in Soviet Moscow.

Adults will appreciate the look into American-Soviet relations forty years ago, and Hilary Knight's wonderful drawings of it.

Why not five stars? Maybe by this fourth Eloise book, the whimsy is a little predictable by now. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Guess the Secret...
I thought it was an awesome book. All those 6 characters put in one book makes it absolutely hysterical. I liked when Harry sends the letters to Song Lee--you can find the letter on page 9. My favorite character is Song Lee because she is different from Mary, and she likes Harry. You'll have to find out the rest....

5-0 out of 5 stars The Fire Breathing Pig!!
I am beginning to realize that I was severely deprived as a young child. The little corner library where I got my first library card actually had a pretty poor selection of books for young readers. As a result, I grew up thinking that there were only a few Freddy the Pig books. Actually Walter Brooks wrote 26 of them. That makes Freddy every bit the equal of the Hardy Boys and Nancy Drew. Many of these books are out of print now, and hard to find, but The Overlook Press has been gradually returning them to circulation. Set in the rural Northeast at a time (the late twenties and thirties), the books recall a time when the world seemed simpler and more full of grace. "Freddy and the Dragon" is the last Freddy novel, published in the year of Brooks death, 1958.

Returning from a jaunt around New England, Freddy and Jinx the cat find themselves less welcome in Centerboro then they are accustomed. Investigation reveals that many of the town's citizens have had property vandalized mysteriously. Witnesses reported sightings of several animals, including a pig. Since many people are naturally wary of talking animals, the suspect du jour for the humans of Centerboro is Freddy and some of his friends from the Bean farm. Our pig hero has no choice but to investigate before he is either jailed or lynched.

Freddy is aided by many friends, like Uncle Ben the inventor, J. J. Pomeroy the detecting robin, Samuel Jackson the mole (and professional conscience), and the adventuring spiders, Mom and Pop Webb. His first challenge is to track down a rogue bull and bring him to justice. Percy the bull has been doing a lot of the vandalism, but Freddy discovers that Percy, although a member of the gang, is really not a bad fellow, just high spirited. Once the bull is offered a chance to stay at the Bean farm and learn how to be a gentlemen he provides Freddy with many of the clues needed to track down Jack the gangster and his evil henchanimals.

What about the dragon? Well, when Freddy is terrorized by the headless horseman who picks up extortion payments he turned to Uncle Ben for help. After a lot of banging and clanking, Ben comes up with a 3 animal dragon suit that even breathes fire. Freddy's trusty dragon is used several times to great effect, eventually bringing the nefarious criminals to justice. This same spirit of inventiveness pervades the entire story and makes it a true delight. From an atomic car to a spider that uses car headlights to signal, the characters often do the entirely unexpected.

As a child I loved these books for the many exotic and wonderful characters, and the enjoyable parts they play. As an adult, I am surprised at the naturalness and simple honesty of the tales as well. There are good guys and bad guys, but justice somehow prevails. People (and animals) have good points and failings, but, on the Bean farm, diversity, mutual respect, and support are the main order of the day. I can find the foundation of many of my own beliefs in the pages of Freddy the Pig.

5-0 out of 5 stars Freddy and The Dragon, a GREAT book!
Someone is wreaking havoc in Centerboro, destroying gardens, stealing bicycles and breaking windows. Animal tracks, including pig tracks, are at the scenes of the crimes. The Bean animals are being accused of these crimes. Freddy attempts to track down the crooks, including a headless horseman, with the help of a friendly dragon! As always, there is lots of action.

If you like this book, you should try the other Freddy books. If you liked the other Freddy books, you will love this one--it was great! ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Blue's Friends
I got this book for my daughter when she was about 18 months old, and she loved it. Each page has an engaging drawing and a simple sentence about what friends do together (e.g., laugh, sing, play, share). My daughter especially enjoyed doing the sound effects written on each page (e.g., "hahaha", "lalala", and so on), and we would talk about friends in her life that she had done these various fun things with. It was a very nice book to read together, very interactive. ... Read more

A Babar classicnow back in print!

First published in 1978, this book turns Babar fans into detectives. Babar shows children that detective work is fun but not easy. When he, his family, and the Old Lady go to town for the unveiling of a gold statue, they soon find that a thief is on the loose. First, a piano is missing, then Babar's car disappears, and finally the statue isn't where it's supposed to be! With only a few clues and careful eyes, Babar, Arthur, and the Old Lady must track down the thieves and use their ingenuity to think of ways to capture them. AUTHOR BIO: Laurent de Brunhoff has been illustrating the Babar books since 1946, after his father, Jean de Brunhoff, illustrated the first titles a decade before. He has created more than 30 books about the world-renowned elephant and his family, most recently the best-selling Babar's Museum of Art and Babar's Yoga for Elephants.

4-0 out of 5 stars Simple But Sweet
This simple but sweet 'Arthur' work is probably aimed at a younger audience than the main targets of the T.V. show- 3rd graders, however, like all 'Arthur' works, it can appeal to all ages. The plot is something of a simple mystery that should work the brains of youngsters, and at least amuse the older readers. The illustrations are probably the best part of the book, each page is vividly illustrated in full color with plenty of ambient background details as well. My only complaint is that Marc gets some of the details wrong. For example, D.W. gets her face painted as a cat, and on the very next page, it is gone. Also, the number of pink stripes on outfit seems to keep changing. (Okay, okay, one gets bored.) Overall, excellent work though. ... Read more

Harry Potter is back at Hogwarts, his wizarding school, and thankful for it. He had the worst summer with the Dursleys, his aunt, uncle, and cousin, whom he hates. He met a house elf, who caused him to be locked in his room for 3 days, with next to no food at all. Then the Wesleys come to rescue him, in a flying car. But that is not all that happends, Harry and Ron can't get through the wall to the Hogwarts train that awaits them on the other side. Then they remember the flying car. After a rough journey to his school and an even rougher landing, Harry Potter thinks that it can't gets worse, but it does. A cat is found hanging on a lamp post in front of Harry, Ron and Hermione, not quite dead, but not really alive, it was Stunned. Then, even worse, a student is next. Everyone, but a couple of his friends thinks that Harry did it. And when people keep getting Stunned, no one belives that he is innocent. It is up to Ron, Hermione, and Harry to find out who is really doing it, before the Hogwarts students get killed off one by one......

Book Description

To celebrate Peter's birthday, Frederick Warne is publishing new editions of all 23 of Potter's original tales, which take the very first printings of Potter's works as their guide. The aim of these editions is to be as close as possible to Beatrix Potter's intentions while benefiting from modern printing and design techniques.

The colors and details of the watercolors in the volumes are reproduced more accurately than ever before, and it has now been possible to disguise damage that has affected the artwork over the years. Most notably, The Tale of Peter Rabbit restores six of Potter's original illustrations. Four were sacrificed in 1903 to make space for illustrated endpapers, and two have never been used before. Of course, Beatrix Potter created many memorable children's characters, including Benjamin Bunny, Tom Kitten, Jemima Puddle-duck and Jeremy Fisher. But whatever the tale, both children and adults alike can be delighted by the artistry in Potter's illustrations, while they also enjoy a very good read. Because they have always been completely true to a child's experience, Potter's 23 books continue to endure.

My 2 year old loves this story she calls it, the bunny's friend book. She enjoys this story more than Peter Rabbit. I think that the story is more eventful than Peter Rabit; and it is nice that the bunnies get to finish their adventure. I have read hundreds of stories to my daughter and we both find this one enjoyable my 5 month old also seems to enjoy it. She likes the colorful pictures. I guess you could say that everyone is happy when this story is chosen. If you like Peter Rabbit you'll like Benjamin Bunny. ... Read more
