5-0 out of 5 stars Old Turtle
Wow...What a wonderful book! I would have to say this is probably one of the very best books I have ever read! Along with the amazing illustrations is a wonderful story of who the animals, mountains, the winds and the waters, the fish, and the rocks and the birds, and the trees see God. I think in a way it gives us a simile on how all of the different things of the earth could symbolize how all the different religions see God. But as the Old Turtle said God is all of the things that they said. God IS!
I would highly recommend this book to parents or teachers to read to children.
The Illustrations of the book are water colors and with how the author places the setting and talks about all the creations of the world I think it really ties the book and illustrations together. ~Kellie~

5-0 out of 5 stars A thought-provoking, smile-inducing, really groovy story
The Old Turtle is truly an incredible book that works on so many levels. The author incorporated his love of, and respect for, the environment, as well as his concept of God, into a very well-written, enjoyable story. The illustrations were beautifully done and work so well with the subtle, underlying theme of the story. While the book will surly be enjoyed by children of all ages, I purchased it for a Christmas gift for my 28 year old sister. Likewise, I intend to buy another copy for myself so that I can continue to enjoy it, and share it with my children when I have them. I wholeheartedly recommend this book to humans of all ages.

5-0 out of 5 stars This Is One Outstanding Book! Extraordinary!
I still have this amazingly and beautifully illustrated story book in hard cover with the "1993 ABBY Book of the Year Children's Book Award" gold sticker on the front. This book is a priceless gem that I have read to my children countless times.
Douglas Wood's phenomenal writing teaches us about honoring the diversities among nature, plants, trees, mountains, the ocean, and all of the different kinds of people on Earth.
Cheng-Khee Chee created the most beautiful watercolor illustrations that look brand new over a decade later in the hard cover edition, which is truly the only edition you would want to buy.
The story is too beautiful to describe. It is an amazing experience. If you want to know which book out of a million to read to your children, this is the one.
HIGHLY Recommended. It is Priceless, and as an adult, I love reading this book as much as my children love hearing it. A MUST BUY, and A MUST READ!

5-0 out of 5 stars Start teaching diversity and tolerance early on.
I received this book years ago as a holiday gift from an adult friend to an adult me! However, my grand-daughter has heard this story over and over since she was 3 or 4, and it has led to many wonderful discussions about tolerance, diversity, the Creator, taking care of Mother Earth and all her children, what "God" might be like, etc. I'm not really wild about organized religion, but through repetition and gentle discourse according to her age, I've managed to convey to her a grounded understanding of spirituality to be found in nature and in everyday life.

In addition, this has become my standard newborn baby gift.

5-0 out of 5 stars The best spiritual book ever!
I NEVER write reviews, but I had to write about this one!

It talks of all the different aspects of the earth and their arguments with each other over what is God. Old Turtle speaks up and proclaims that God is all the things they have said, but most importantly, GOD IS.

Old Turtle then goes on to talk about how humans are coming and are a gift. The humans do come, but they forget the gift and thereby destroy much of the earth. When they remember, they realize that if they love, they will experience the gift of God again.

This is how I want to teach my son and new baby about God. Not the politics of who is "right" or "wrong." We can all just be assured that through whatever spiritual path we are all on, we can take solace in knowing that GOD IS.

Beautiful story. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars We loved this book!
In this wonderful book (published by Moody Press), author Helen L. Taylor takes the Christian classic Pilgrim's Progress and reworks it for younger readers. She simplified the words and concepts, but stayed remarkably close to the original story. The chapters are nice and short, which makes this an excellent bedtime read, which is how I read it to my nine-year-old son and eleven-year-old daughter.

This is really two stories in one book, the first story tells of Christian, a small boy living in the City of Destruction, who hears Evangelist talking about the Celestial City where the great King lives. Christian becomes a pilgrim, and sets off for the Celestial City. Along the way he has many encounters and learns many lessons. The second story is about Christiana, a friend of Christian, who sets out with others to walk the same path, and they encounter many trials, often different than the ones faced by Christian.

This is an excellent book. It is jam-packed with Christian concepts, which you can then stop, at a convenient chapter break, and explain. Indeed, if I have one complaint, it's that I wish that this book had a study guide to accompany it! My children were a little disquieted by the martyrdom of one character, but as this is also a part of the Christian experience, I am glad that this book addressed it.

So, I must say that my children and I all loved this book. As a matter of fact, I think that I will make reading it a yearly tradition (for a while, anyway). We highly recommend this book!

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent book for both children and adults
This is a great adaptation of Bunyan's classic Christian work. It makes for great reading at bedtime, and though, being only twenty I have no children, I have found I enjoyed this book a great deal. It details the account of Christian, and later his (in the original book) wife's journey to Heaven (the Bright City). It has been a few years since I've read this, but I've read it four or five times, enjoying it immensely.

The central problem (and this complaint is against Bunyan, not Helen E. Taylor) is, although I have read or heard it used to be a common thing back in that time era (1500 - 1700) to name the characters after whatever virtue or allegorical element the author wishes to state. Bunyan takes his allegory, and like Lewis in THE LION, THE WITCH, AND THE WARDROBE stop telling the story and beat you with the allegory. (Narnia is one of my favorites, and although I like LWW, it has earned the position of my least favorite Narnia because several things don't jibe with me, or, instead of allowing readers to learn or draw conclusions, Lewis specifically dominates and draws an entirely too explicit comparison to Christianity. It is more personal taste than anything - though I like allegory, if one gets to explicit (like Aslan dying, or, in this book, when Christian sees a picture of King David) the story loses its spell over me.

However, this is still a great book. Highly recommended, and if you won't want to wade through the much harder original, adults should go with this.

5-0 out of 5 stars Riveting!
During my childhood nearly 40 years ago) I was utterly fascinated by this book. It stood out as one of the most interesting books of my childhood days, and it made an indelible impression on me. (Other favorites were C.S. Lewis' Narnia series, Little Princess, & Secret Garden). But back to Little Pilgrim's Progress: I'm not sure why this book was so intriguing to myself and my siblings, perhaps because the little pilgrem faced real dangers and even death??
Well, recently this book came up in conversation -- I hadn't thought of it for years -- and I dug out a copy, and started to read it. Moments later my nearly 6-year-old daughter came up and asked me if I would read it to her. My nearly 4-year-old son also wanted to listen. (I read freqently to my children, and they often are able to enjoy stories beyond their age level, but still I thought this would be too advanced to hold their attention.) But still, I decided to try. Of course, when I read I simplified or explained the language from time to time (some of the wording is old-fashioned). But to my astonishment, my children were absolutely riveted. The chapters in this book are short, and the children kept begging me to read more!! I was especially amazed that my 4-year-old remained totally engaged in the story (there are occasional illustrations, but it isn't a picture book; they were just listening). We finished the Christian part of the book in a few reading sessions over 3 days. (We later read the Christiana story, but the children didn't find it as interesting).
Conclusion: I'm not saying that this book would usually be of interest to such young children, but only wanted to comment that it can be a very exciting book and can provide much opportunity for thoughtful discussion with a parent.
Oh, I will add one more thing -- shortly after reading the book, one day my son asked if he could change his name to "Help" (like in the story). And later, he asked if he could be called "Greatheart". So now we jokingly have added those names to his middle name. Also, after reading the story concepts came up a lot in conversations over the following days and weeks.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent example of faith in action
I read this book when I was a child and remember being quite intrigued by it. It confronts some of the deepest fears and anxieties that go hand in hand with trying to be a God-fearing, moral human being. Although I didn't realize it at the time, this book provided (and continues to provide) excellent examples of the hardships and sacrifices that result from chosing the moral path in life, and as a result it introduces a view of Christianity that stresses not only redemption, but also the self-discipline and courage that is required to confront the evil around us every day. Persons of all ages can learn from this book.

4-0 out of 5 stars A great book for kids
My mom read this book to me and my brother and sisters. It was a good book. At times it was hard to understand and with so many people in the book, it's not hard to see why. After some time, I got the hang of it. It is an exciting book at the end. Not the best book my mom has read, but still good! ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Beautiful Kids Story: Reveals God's Love
This easy to read and beautifully drawn children's story shows the intensity and power of God's love. The book's vision is that God's love is simple, straight-forward and more powerful than we could ever expect.

My 3 and 5 year old children love the book and want me to read it again and again. They say "'Read God's Clown' again daddy ...".

The ending deals with death but it is not death in misery or emptiness. The Clown of God reaches God's heart and I think it will reach your heart and your child's heart too.

5-0 out of 5 stars Beautiful Story for Children
Tomie de Paolo's The Clown of God is by far, one of the most beautiful stories for children around. I was read this story as a child and it still is one of my all time favorites. The beautiful, soft-colored prints throughout the book will delight children along with the story about Giovanni, the poor boy who becomes a juggling clown in a circus. Giovanni goes on to become a famous juggler, but towards the end of his life, he once again becomes poor. He finds himself back home in Sorrento on Christmas Eve and performs a miracle in his local church. A story that will delight both children and adults.

4-0 out of 5 stars A good story, not just for Catholic children
I read about this book here on Amazon.com, and wasn't sure I'd like it. We are not Catholic, and just from the review here alone, I knew that Catholicism was almost presumed. How would I explain the multitude of differences in our faiths to my five year old son? A priest versus a pastor. What on earth is a "brother," or a monk? Offering gifts to a statue of the Christ child, when we don't believe in making any graven image of God?

I checked the book out of the library to see what I thought. Yes, its Catholic flavor cannot be missed, but the message was an excellent one. The lesson the brothers taught Giovanni was one that I took to heart, that everything we do should be done for the glory of God. Though Giovanni wrote it off at the time, he ultimately got the message, and gave the best gift that he could to the Lord Jesus.

The only reason why I didn't give it five stars, was that my son didn't like the ending. He thought it was sad that Giovanni died, and therefore didn't especially want to hear it again. I used it, however, as an opportunity to teach him about death. Giovanni came to love the Lord Jesus, and the Lord Jesus loved him, so he went to be with Jesus when he died. That isn't a bad thing; rather it is good! There is no need to be sad that Giovanni died, because he went to a place where things were much better for him.

Part of me wants to give it five stars for the teaching opportunity about death that it provided! But I guess I'll leave it as I did. Too bad I couldn't give it a 4.5!

4-0 out of 5 stars The Clown of God written by Tomie de Paola
This story takes place in a town called Sorrento. There is really only one main character, and his name is Giovanni. Giovanni was a poor boy who didn't have any parents. he could juggle very well, and would juggle for food. He would juggle different kinds of fruit like zucchini, lemons, eggplants, oranges, and apples. Signor Baptista's wife gave him the food because he brought people in to buy her fruit.
Then one day a traveling circus comes to town. Giovanni enjoyed it so much, that he asked the Maestro if he could become a part of the performance. The Maestro agreed that he could join them, but doesn't get paid, just a place to sleep and some food. Then, later, the Maestro gives him a costume and lets Giovanni perform for the crowd. Giovanni would juggle sticks, plates, clubs, rings, and burning torches. Then he would do his most famous act; with a red, orange, yellow, green, blue, and then a violent ball. When he got all the balls going at a good pace, he would throw "the Sun in the Heavens" ball that was gold. The crowds loved this act the best.
Over the years, Giovanni got very famous performing for dukes and princes. Then when he was a teenager, he ran into two Brothers. They asked him if he would share his food with them. Giovanni said yes to them. They told him that with his juggling, he was bring God glory. Giovanni didn't reallt think so, and laughed. Then he told the Brothers fairwell and left.
Then, Giovanni got old and no one wanted to see him juggle anymore. They started to throw vegetables and stones at him, so he had to leave. He decided to go back home to Sorrento. Then Giovanni reached the church of the Brothers that he met years ago. The Church was filled with people who were carrying beautiful gifts. He asked someone what was going on and they said it was the Holy Child's birthday.
He decides that he will juggle for the stern Child sitting in his mother's arm, for that was the only gift he could give. He did this when everyone was gone. So, Giovanni does his usually acts; the clubs, the plates, and the flaming torches. Then he does his most famous act, "the Sun in the Heavens." A brother sees him and goes to get a priest. When they get to Giovanni, they see him lying on the floor dead. Then the brother turns around and looks at the statue of the Lady holding her Holy Child. Read the book to see what happens.

5-0 out of 5 stars just MY opinion
A masterpiece in both story and pictures. It should have received Caldecott honors when it was eligible. DePaola will be remembered for several achievements in books...the 26 FAIRMOUNT AVENUE series, the BARKERS series, STREGA NONA, NANA UPSTAIRS & NANA DOWNSTAIRS, and others, and THIS extraordinary book. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars A Great Family Devotional
I've had this book for 3 years and both my children (now aged 5 and 11) still love to hear the stories. The pictures are colorful and enjoyable and the bible stories are well placed in the story themes. The story set up begins with a situation the bear family encounters and then a bible story that relates to that situation is recollected by one of the bears. The last story Heaven Can't Wait will have the reader teary eyed, and is told in such a way that although the child will experience the sadness of death, they will see the victory of eternal life with God. I wish there were more books written of Big Ideas In the Bible. This book makes a great family devotional!

We were on vacation at a friend's. They brought out this book to read for her bedtime story. Well, we had to read 2 of the stories that night. The first thing the next morning, she got the book out again and asked me to read more. While the other kids were out swimming in the pool, she insisted I read her 2 more of the stories. When we got home from vacation, she told me she wanted to use her allowance money and buy a copy of the book herself. The tone of the book is warm and encouraging. Melody Carlson continues her captivating writing in It's my Life: Diary of a teenage girl (book 2.) This book was just as wonderful as the first. Caitlin O' Conner's life never stops being interesting. She has many temptations with her new religion and has problems with her friends. In this novel Caitlin's church youth group goes on a mission to Mexico and there she feels she found her purpose in life, helping others who are less fortunate than her. This mission changes her views on a lot of things and will change yours too. Melody Carlson sucks you in and keeps you in till you reach that back cover and that's when you go buy the next book in the series. Any teen girl will love this book because we can all relate to Caitlin's life. That is why I give it 5 stars, but you must read all of the books in the series in order to get the full effect. But, trust me you'll want to read them all once you've read one.

5-0 out of 5 stars The Diary of A teenage girl, book 2 is Awesome!
It was as exciting as i thought the first one was! In this book she goes more in-depth into life's challenges of any teenage girl living right now. Carlson sure knows how to capture a readers attention. Every single issue she writes about in the book is something that almost all girls can relate too. The very moving storyline keeps you reading from the beginning to the end. You can's stop reading it! If you're a girl going through some tough times right now. This book, and her first one, are the perfect books to read. You'll find out that a lot of things she writes about is very similar to what you're going through. So check this book out! ;)

4-0 out of 5 stars Lindsay Bein book review: Diary of a teenage girl.
The book that I have chosen is called Diary of a Teenage Girl. This book is about a girl who wants to fit in but still abide by what she thinks is what God wants from her. Her mother and father do not get along. She is constantly fighting with her father. At one point she gets into the popular group and learns it isn't so great. She goes to a party and there is drinking, so she gets drivin home by her friend's boyfriend, who soon likes her. Then the young man in her youth group dies and she is faced with a great deal of pain, so she talks about it with her aunt who went to the church. Her two best friends also went to the church. They are a boy and a girl and had been going out for a long time. They decided they would be together forever so it would be okay to have sex. Now her friend is faced with a more serious problem, she is pregnant. Once again she looks to her aunt for advice, and her aunt takes her friend in, but her friend still has to work and take care of the baby that is about to be born.
I think this book is a good way to learn new coping skills. This young girl is faced with some very rough problems and her coping skill is praying or talking. I think this would be a good book for all teenagers to read if they need a little pick-up.
When I started reading this book I couldn't set it down. I didn't set it down until I was completely done. I would recommend this book.
It would also be a good book for parents to read about the every day troubles teenagers face. It is a very good book abou making good choices, and one that I would give to friends to read. It was a hard book to find, but I'm sure with a little help from the internet it can be found.

5-0 out of 5 stars A great book for Christian Teens!
I loved the first Diary of a Teenage Girl and the 2nd installment didn't disappoint. We need more books out there that display Christian values. Melody Carlson is an excellent storyteller! Another author you might want to check out is Edee Wilcox. She is a new author who has written a book for those girls who have already overstepped the boundaries of purity and are struggling to get back to a relationship with God.

Subtitled a "Story of Encouragement for All Ages," the Trellis and the Seed tells the story of how "God has planned something beautiful" for even the tiniest, most unassuming little seed.

The tiny seed begins its mysterious journey in the hands of the seemingly omnipotent "Nice Lady," who predicts--much to the seed's disbelief--that it will make a "beautiful vine with sweet-smelling blossoms." Even as the Nice Lady plants the seed, erects an ambitious trellis, waits for rain, adds fertilizer, and performs all her other nurserial oblations, the seed continues to be baffled by its caretaker's faith. ("It was only a seed, and very, very small. How could it ever be a beautiful vine with blossoms?") How indeed? Suffice it to say, God doesn't send a crafty bird to eat the seed in a harrowing third-act changeup.

Jan Karon's story of patience and faith shows the same folksy charm that infuses her Mitford Years series, and her gentle words find a soothing complement in the skilled, muted watercolors of Robert Gantt Steele (of the Her Story series). (Ages 4 to 8) --Paul Hughes ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars A Brief, But Warm Burst of Sunshine of A Book
As a fan of Karon's, this is first of this nature of her books for me. What a delight of a quick read, all of five minutes or so. But what a read!

Story of a seed, dry with no hope of becoming anything worthy. But through being set aside, doused in water, but into the deep, dark cold ground, drowned with water, covered with manure, and struggling to reach top of the trellis and finally to produce blossoms, supported by trellis and Nice Woman, it happens.

Knowing the author's faith and numerous Biblical references to plants and bearing blossoms (e.g. Psalm 1 and Mt. 13:18-52, and John 15:1-9), one cannot but sense that this is real parable's meaning here. Although many will derive pleasure from the read and wonderful illustrations, and still others will sense morals of patience, perseverance, support, etc., the strong spiritual implications here are obvious, what with the strong Biblical allusion and Karon's faith evidenced in the Mitford writings.

Blessings on this creativity and beauty communicated so wonderfully for all ages to be encouraged to blossom and bloom where and when the Lord wills.

5-0 out of 5 stars A Tickle or A Kiss?
A book of encouragement for all ages, enchantingly illustrated. God's perfect timing, mixed with grace and peace and the warmth of the earth and the water of the skies, can make us all be better than we ever imagined. A small volume, which I read in its entirety on my lunch hour, still delivers a powerful message.

5-0 out of 5 stars Best Children's Bible I've Found
I looked at several children's bibles before picking up this one, and I have been very happy with this purchase. All the major Bible stories are here, and the author has broken them down into manageable bits for children to read and understand. The stories are told in an entertaining, can't-put-the-story-down manner, yet never fail to teach the lesson intended.

This is a fabulous book to read to your children, for them to read to themselves, or for adults to read when they want a quick review of everything biblical. Definitely deserving of five stars.

4-0 out of 5 stars Great Gift for kids
I bought this book for my son who made his first Communion. It is an excellent book. All the best stories of the Bible are in this book. The kids are actually intrested in it! How better to learn about Jesus and the Old Testament than reading this book. We love it and I am thinking about buying it for my religious Education class for a Christmas gift.

5-0 out of 5 stars Bible Stories for Children
I purchased this book in February, 1989 and have read it cover to cover at least six times for each of my three children. It is the best children's Bible that I have found. Children are interested as early as 3-4 and remain interested through 10-12. It is outstanding. I recommend reading from start to end, two chapters per night. It is well illustrated, Biblically sound, and well written with appropriate size print. Enjoy and God Bless. Makes a wonderful Christmas Gift. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Wonderful Book
A wonderful book! I give one to everyone I know who is struggling in dealing with this type of loss.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent Book!!!!!!!!!
Incredible illustrations and wonderful story!! Bought it for my children as I loved the message and thought it would be good in the loss of a pet. Now I find myself in the position of supporting a friend's child as he prepares to die after a 5 yr. battle with cancer. NEVER thought I'd need it for that but was thrilled to find the main character's age (6 yrs old)is the same as this child. I know this book will help him on his journey!

4-0 out of 5 stars Eases feelings at the loss of a pet
For anyone who loves animals and has experienced the loss of one, this story supports the emotional attachment and makes us feel the pet is in a great place. We hope for our pets to be taken care of without us, and this story sets just that stage.
The illustrations support the story and are beautiful in their own right. I have given this book to three friends with children who have lost family pets and all three felt it provided a kind word at that most difficult time.

5-0 out of 5 stars I LOVE this book!
This is a must have for anyone with children or who work with children! I still can't read it without tears coming to my eyes. I am the director at a Christian preschool and we have read it many times when hearing questions of pets dying. The story helps children to cope with the lose by helping them envision their pet in a happy, beautiful place with children angels who love them. It also emphasizes the joy of one day being reunited again. Please order this book now or keep the title for future reference. I have never done a book review for Amazon but felt compelled to do one on this book! You won't be sorry!

5-0 out of 5 stars All Gods Creatures Go To Heaven

I decided to look for this book to give to her older brother who is only 3, to show him that his baby sister is with the Angels. This book would help anyone (even adults) feel better about a death of a child. Highly recommend. ... Read more

Book Description

This is a non-fiction book about the apparitions of Our Lady of Guadalupe, set in the historical context of 16th century Mexico. The beautiful colour paintings, 18 in all, are taken from the oil paintings of Jorge Sanchez Hernandez. His collection, known as the "Nican Mopohua" (a poem the Aztecs created in order to tell this story and hand it down through the ages) is beautiful and tender. They inspire courage and confidence in life's true meaning, and stand in direct contrast to violence, destruction, greed and oppression.Unlike many of Our Lady's apearances in other places, such as Fatima and Medjugorje, she comes with no general message in the words for the world, but rather with a mission of action for two me. To the one "Go and ask, and keep on asking" and to the other "build." And by contrast, the message intended for the Aztec people, and Spanish settlers alike, was not just spoken words, but eloquently with images. With one exquisitely rendered self-portrait and a tilma full of roses, Our Lady changes one man's heart, liberates a people from the suffereing of human sacrifice and gives hope for the end of foreign oppression. With these few images, Our Lady brought about, on a grand scale, spiritual conversion of Mexico that Christian missionaries up to that time had been unable to accomplish. Her spoken message: "Come to me and tell me all your woes and problems, I am your Merciful Mother, the Mother of the One, True God, the Mother of all the nations on Earth, and I want to alleviate your sufferings." She comes as Mother to remind us she is ever with us, always ready to help, to guide, to comfort, nurture and love us. No obstacle stands in her way. We need only turn her in our anxiety.Juan Diego gives an example to all those who would volunteer for noble causes, not by neglecting his family, even though he has been asked directly to go on a divine mission. Our Lady acknowledges and respects his devotion to his dying uncle, visits him to comfort and cure him, and gives him also a message for the bishop. The story appeals delightfully to young boys and girls whose confidence and self-esteem may be fragile, the littlest ones, the quiet, timid ones, the overlooked ones, as they find in Juan Diego encouragement and hope. Thier Mother in Heaven notices their needs and their circumstances, and She will stand by them in all they must face, because they are very dear to Her. ... Read more

When a poor devout widow begs for a scrap of bread from a rich faithless baker, she promises to participate in the king's wedding mass as payment for the baker's generosity. The baker writes "One Mass" on a scrap of paper and places it on his scale to determine how much bread it is worth. To his and the entire town's surprise, nothing in the shop, not even the gigantic wedding cakes made for the king, outweighs the simple piece of paper representing the true worth of a mass. Luminous old-world watercolor paintings grace the interior of the book and gold foil artwork lends an air of solemnity and sacred beauty to the story. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Thank you
Thank you very much for the kind words! I'm the illustrator of this book, and I was very happy and touched when I observed the exhaustive reviews above. I absolutely agree with them, the story is really wonderful. I especially admire its polished style, it is really carefully-chosen. I remember when I red it the first time, it was a special experience for me to read the story. It is so touching, beautiful and amazing. I warmly recommend this book for everybody, who loves the classical values.

5-0 out of 5 stars Exquisite, beautiful, luminous story and illustrations!
Want to give your children or other children whom you love a precious gift? Give them this book! It's one they'll read as children and they'll read 40 years from now to their own children. It's not only a beautiful story, but one that will strengthen their faith.

Wonderfully written by Josephine Nobisso and luminously illustrated by Katalin Szegedi, The Weight of a Mass, is an original cultural folk tale based upon a true story. The story reads and looks like a fairy tale.

A ragged, destitute widow arrives at the kingdom's prosperous bakery and begs only a crust of bread in exchange for offering a royal wedding Mass for the baker.

The baker scoffs and tears off a tiny piece of tissue paper on which he writes the words: One Mass, intending to place them it on the scale to find out the value of a Mass.

Much to his surprise, when he drops a piece of old bread on the other side of the scale, it does not tip. So, he enlists his son to stack more and more baked goods on top of the scale. Out come cherry topped cupcakes, marzipan apple, filled chocolates, poppy seed cakes, rolls, donuts, fruitcakes, cream cakes, berry tarts, poached pears, plum pudding, candied fruits, almond confetti, crsuhed walnuts, and eventually the royal wedding cake.

The father, his son, the old woman, and others in the kingdom come to learn the weight of a Mass.

The story includes an author's postscript recounting the original story as told by Father Stanislaus from Luxembourg who tells of a conversation between a butcher and a Captain of the Forest Guards that was interrupted by an old woman begging a morsel of meat in exchange for a Holy Mass intention. As a result of the miracle, the Captian began attending Mass daily and one of his sons later received a calling to the priesthood.

I cannot say praise this book enough. It's a genre that is sorely needed in children's literature. Not only is it a beautiful book, but it teaches about the richness of the Mass and the priceless presence of Jesus Christ in the Eucharist.

The paintings are wonderful, particularly those of an arched interior of the Cathedral and the bishop holding up the Eucharist at the wedding Mass.

Do yourself a favor. Purchase this book for your children, your grandchildren, and any other children whom you love.

5-0 out of 5 stars An enthusiastically recommended tale of human spirit
The Weight Of A Mass: A Tale Of Faith by Josephine Nobisso is an enhanting children's fairy tale picturebook based on a true event, about a widow who brings about change in the formerly cold hearts of a kingdom when she begs for stale bread in exchange for participating in the royal wedding Mass. Gentle color illustrations by Katalin Szegedi enrich this heartwarming and enthusiastically recommended tale of human spirit and faith in God. ... Read more

Trouble is brewing in Baker, Washington. Three popular athletes havebeen stricken with a mysterious ailment--or phenomenon--that leaves them rantingincoherently, paranoid, and eventually comatose. Ever ready to seek truth andjustice, teen twins Elisha and Elijah and their parents hop in their van, theHoly Roller, and head to Washington. As members of a top-secret presidentialinvestigative team, the Veritas Project, the family must be prepared togo undercover at any moment. Soon they are deeply embroiled in a deadly mysterythat involves witchcraft, bullying, the ghost of a boy who hanged himself longago, and a most diabolical weapon.

Frank Peretti, well known for his Christian thrillers (This Present Darkness/Piercing theDarkness, TheVisitation, etc.) draws from his own experiences of not fitting in as achild to create this alarming tale of vengeance. The twins and their parentsoccasionally turn to their faith for guidance, but the crux of the story lies inthe danger that comes from treating less cool kids like second-class citizens.References to the tragedy at Columbine remind readers just how painfully realthe problem is. Peretti seems to use the twins' father as a voice for his ownviewpoint: "Metal detectors may keep weapons out of the schools, and securityofficers can maintain at least a surface tranquility, but these will not keepout the pain, anger, and loneliness that cause a child to bring a weapon toschool in the first place." 5-0 out of 5 stars Frank lives up to his reputation
If you love Christian suspense, or even if you don't, you will after you read this. Twins Elijah and Elisha and their parents make up a highly secret investigative team. The family goes all over the country to find "not only the Facts, but the Truth behind the Facts." In a small Washington town, a highschool's star athletes are coming down with a mysterious illness that leaves them insane. The Springfield family is sent to investigate, finding a mysterious ghost, a second class system, and witchcraft surrounding them. They soon realizes that there is the Baker High that everyone chooses to see, and the second Baker High where people are harrassed, abused, bullied, stolen from, and made fun of every day. What measures will people go to to stop it? Enough to murder? I loved this eerie book! Not one section was boring, I was hooked to every page! The only problem is that I have to wait till the next book comes out...

5-0 out of 5 stars Hangman's Curse
The Hangman's Curse is Frank Peretti's first installment in a new series, The Veritas Project, aimed at young teens. The story unfolds just as if it is a story right out of today's headlines and deals with the issue of bullying on the high school campus. The Springfield family, consisting of twins Elisha and Elijah and their parents, make up the investigation team working on The Veritas Project. The program's mission is to investigate and solve strange mysteries, crimes, and occurrences, seeking not only the facts, but the truth behind the facts. In Hangman's Curse, the Springfield family's assignment is to discover the truth behind the mysterious form of madness that is inflicting Baker High School's athletes. What is causing this madness? Is it tied to the superstition of a curse left by the ghost of a student who has haunted the school since he hanged himself at the school in the 1930's? Who is the ghostly figure with a hawk on his shoulder that is seen by those tormented by the mysterious madness? Is he Abel Frye and is Abel Frye the student who hung himself? What is the meaning of the crude etching of a hangman figure on the lockers of each victim? It seems that it is the bullies that have been targeted and are the ones contracting the mysterious illness. Are they suffering a form of revenge from a group of students that is meeting secretly practicing witchcraft? What is the truth? The answers are uncovered as you follow the Springfield family's quest for the truth behind the mystery. The Hangman's Curse is a fast-paced and riveting page turner. The truth behind the mysterious madness will surprise the reader. Teens as well as adult fans of Peretti will enjoy this book. When finished, the reader will be eagerly awaiting the next installment in this series.

4-0 out of 5 stars Nice and fun.
"Hangman's Curse" and "Nightmare Academy" are entertaining and easy reads. If you've been doing heavy research or reading this is a good switch. Light, and fun, I enjoyed it after a long study program I was in.. I read both books back to back so this review will be seen under both books.

I liked "The Visitation" better, but all three are worthy of your money..

5-0 out of 5 stars The best book in the world for Christians
The first time I read this book, I thought it was going to be boring, but when I went to the second book it got really good, and I couldn't stop reading them! When I finished them I told my mom we needed to buy the other one.
I got the series to 18, but I need 16.

I recomend this book to every one. Even if your not christian, but when you read it don't be scared about what happens in the book because it is really going to happen in real life! I'm a christian myself and I'm getting ready for the rapture. This book is great I love it ! It even tells you what happens when your left behind.
All I can say is that this book is the best in the world!

4-0 out of 5 stars Left Behind
I think this is a really great series of books. The books explain the end times very well. They are easy to understand for younger readers and would be amazingly exciting for all ages. I would highly recomend these books to everyone. I would also recomend the adult series for the advanced readers.

5-0 out of 5 stars Just for kids?
My wife I have read the first seven Left Behind books (to each other) and are in the middle of No. 8. We find these books hard to put down as most people do. What I didn't count on was my reaction to "The Kids." About 15 months ago I ordered a used copy of book #1, just to see how the story was presented to our children. To date, my wife and I have read independently all 18 volumes!
While they are quick reads and very easy to follow, they are definitely not just for kids. They present a compelling story line parallel to the "big Kids" books, but from a point of view that makes me think our kids may not be so bad.
A story of hope for children, Left Behind presents one view of what they might face in the not so distant or unbelievable future. ALL KIDS, of any age should read these books if for no other reason than the fun of it. Action, adventure, personal relationships and scriptural authority, all the most sought after ingredients are here. I believe youngsters over about 12 years could move right over to the adult version and be hooked immediately. These books are wonderful! Thanks to LaHaye and Jenkins: keep them coming! ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Excitement of being a grandmother......
When I first found out that I was going to be a grandmother for the first time, I started noticing books about grandmothers. I looked through this book and thought it was so cute, so I bought it, intending to give it to my grandchild.
When my son was married, his wife had a seven year old daughter. Now that they are expecting, I decided I needed to make her daughter feel special to me before the baby was born. They haven't been married for long, so I haven't had the chance to bond with her as yet. So, one day, when she was at my house and climbing all over my son, I decided she needed something to settle her down, so I went and got this book and gave it to her. She immediately wanted to read it with me. So she began reading and looking at the pictures. It got her attention quickly with the wording of the way grandmothers and their grandchildren could spend quality time. She'd read and then look at me with those big brown eyes and smile or giggle. It was the first time we had connected as a grandmother and grandchild. I finished the last couple of pages for her as she sat in my lap. When we finished it, she hugged my neck. That was when my heart melted for the first time as a "Grammy."
I went shopping yesterday and bought some super soaker water guns that she and I could play with...which was a way to have fun together, which is the theme of this book. I can't wait until I surprise her with them. It is a sweet book to share with your grandchild about how you can bond with your grandchild by doing silly things. Leave the discipline to the parents and just enjoy them. It was the first time I had experienced the unconditional love that a grandchild can give you in return. I might be going through the experience of a first grandchild's birth, but I have learned that this will surely be my second grandchild; my first is a seven year old little girl with big brown eyes that loved this book.
