5-0 out of 5 stars Touching insight into the people who are our "angels"
This is a lovely story of the "angels" that walk among us: be they teachers, firefighters, our neighbors, our mothers... When you think you need some strength, these are the people who come through for us -- our support and inspiration. It is a great story for children, but also is a wonderful gift for your "angel." I keep giving my book away....

5-0 out of 5 stars Captivating story and illustrations!
This book, beautifully illustrated and written in poetic form is a keeper and a wonderful gift to kids. It is a simple tale of how important we are to one another and how we all have "angels" watching over us whether or not we can really "see" them. In fact they are in smiles, and in nature and in the good things in life. This book so captivated my daughter-in-law that she distributed hundreds of them to the families of the firefighters, the police and the rescue personnel families who lost their father/mother in the Sept 11 tragedy. A mother of two herself, she and her family and friends deliverd these books to the firestations in early December for distribution. Each book was dedicated to the family and signed personally by the people who gave the donation for the book. This was a deed done out of love and this is what this book is about. A great baby present- and a keeper for your child. I am a grandmother- and I recommend this to all you. ENjoy and read with your grandchild!

5-0 out of 5 stars Best of 2000!

Long ago and far away, in a rambling garden beside a clear blue lake, two flocks of birds began to fear each other because of their differences. The fear grew, and soon the birds became enemies, hoarding great quantities of weapons to protect themselves--until panic struck and the chance for peace seemed lost forever.

5-0 out of 5 stars Feathers And Fools
This book is great. I would recommend this book to everyone. In this book the swans and peacocks are enemies. This book is for all ages. The peackocks and swans had a fight, but some swans flew away. If you like great illustrations read Feathers And Fools by Mem Fox.
By: Lauren M.

4-0 out of 5 stars A Lesson In Conflict
Once again Mem Fox has captured an essential humancondition. Like so many of her previous picture books, Feathers andFools, lyrically pulls us into a story rich with meaning. We use this allegory in our Unit of Inquiry focusing on 20th Century Conflicts. Students are full of observations which they apply to history and to their personal lives. Perfect for use in IB-PYP schools. The beautiful illustrations by Nicholas Wilton successfully augment this tale of fear and new beginnings. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars The Storm God Rules!
The book Hittite Warrior is a classic. My son read it and passed on to me. I could not pit down. This is an excellent read for anyone interested in ancient history, Hittite history and life struggles. THank you.

3-0 out of 5 stars Nice story, lousy writing
The basic idea and plot of this book is really neat. The story is set in the Biblical time of the Judges before Israel had a king. We are introduced to a Hittite youth living in the Mediterranean about the time that Greeks, particularly those from Crete, were gaining ascendancy. The Hittites as a people are conquered and become fugitives. Our protagonist flees first to the Phoenicians and then into the hills of Judea, where he meets Deborah, the prophetess, and Berek, the Israelite general who is to defeat Sisera. He ends up fighting in the battle on the wrong side, but eventually marries a Israelite woman and settles down in the area.

On the way, we are introduced to all kinds of Hittite, Phoenician, Israelite, and Canaanite customs. We learn about their dress, their gods (particularly the dreadful Moloch), their methods of fighting, their habits of enslaving captive peoples, and so on. The book has obviously been carefully researched, and the plot is plausible and interesting.

I give the book three stars because the writing is terrible. The fact that the book is for children does not excuse this. Sentences are frequently awkward in construction, and the book reads like a first draft. For instance, the writer will say something like, "The warrior rushed towards me, and I hit him with a stick that I had picked up several moments ago before he attacked me." That's a paraphrase, but you see what I mean. Why on earth weren't we told about the stick BEFORE the warrior rushed towards him? It's as thought the writer just thought of the weapon, and instead of putting the event in it's proper place, she flings it in as an afterthought. This kind of sloppy editing occurs throughout the text. As imaginative fiction, it's great, but this book is NOT a good example for kids to follow in style, editing, or structure.

5-0 out of 5 stars I couldn't put it down!
I'm a mom of three home-schooled girls, and I bought the book for them. I decided to read the first few pages to make sure that the reading level was appropriate for my oldest. I couldn't put it down! From the very beginning, the author gets you interested in this Hittite young man. The descriptions of the battles were interesting without being upsetting to children. Besides battles, there are horses, spies, lots of interesting information about what it might have been like to live during this time in history, and some good plot twists.

5-0 out of 5 stars '...the hair rose on the back of my neck...
.

...at the enormity of the sacrilege.'

Hittite Warrior tells about a Hittite boy, Uriah Tarhaund, and his adventures after his family is killed by the Greeks, or as they are refered to, the 'Sea People'. Told by his father, he promised to go to Siseria, a man in Canaan. He is brought to Tyre to be rewarded for saving a merchant from thieves. He is 'adopted' into the family. One of the servants of the merchants father, Ethbaal, saves a child from being sacrificed to their God, Moloch. Forced by the servant, Jotham, to come with him, he lives with Jotham's Hebrew tribe for a while. Keeping his promise, Uriah went to Siseria but was captured on the way. After being released he took part in defending Canaan from the Hebrews. He loses the battle and retreats across the river Kishon to Dor in the company of another soldier. He returns to Ethbaal to save his daughter, Mehitable, from the Philistines. The end of the story is very touching. I found the tale extremely intriguing. It had some facts regarding the structures of buildings, the chariots, etc... There is, for those of you who like war, a battle in the story. I find it a very good book for a person in their early teens.

I also recommend: The Cat of Bubastes (G. A. Henty), For the Temple (G. A. Henty), The Golden Goblet (Eloise Jarvis McGraw)

5-0 out of 5 stars Good historical fiction for homeschoolers
Takes an obscure period, and an obscure people and makes an interesting story. Historical fiction such as this is much more fun than textbooks. It's very readable with enough action to keep the attention of young readers. This clarifies who the Hittites were, where they lived and what happened to them. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars It doesn't get any better.
My daughter's religion teacher recommended these books to me. Her words say it best, "It doesn't get any better." The stories are endearing! The meanings are simple and clear to young readers. I'm sending a set to my niece and nephews. You won't be disappointed.

5-0 out of 5 stars Not Just for Kids
I love this book and the entire series! I have given these books as gifts to children I know for several years and will continue. In fact, I love reading them as much as the kids I give them to.

Lucado teaches us in a simple way that God's love is for everyone. Throughout this series he has found a simple way to convey who God really is to children. I wish I had these books when I was a child.

What a simple way to learn who you are in relation to your Holy Father.
I would recommend this series to both children and adults.

5-0 out of 5 stars Another great one by Lucado
We really enjoyed this book. We are always amazed at how Max Lucado is able to illustrate God's love in stories that children (and adults) can relate to. The art is a compliment to the story and completes this great book. Five Stars.

Book Description

Pieces of Magic

Remember when you were a child—when all the world was new, and the smallest object a thing of wonder? Arleta Richardson remembers: the funny wearable wire contraption hidden in the dusty attic, the century-old schoolchild's slate that belonged to Grandma, an ancient trunk filled with quilt pieces—each with its own special story—and the button basket, a miracle of mysteries. And best of all was the remarkable grandmother who made magic of all she touched, bringing the past alive as only a born storyteller could.

Here are those marvelous tales—faithfully recalled for the delight of young and old alike, a touchstone to another day when life was simpler, perhaps richer; when the treasures of family life and love were passed from generation to generation by a child's questions...and the legends that followed enlarged our faith.

Gifted storyteller Arleta Richardson grew up an only child in Chicago, living in a hotel on the shroes of Lake Michigan. Under the care of her maternal grandmother, she listened for hours as her grandmother told stories from her own childhood. With unusual recall, Arleta began to write these stories for an audience that now numbers over 2 million. "My grandmother would be amazed to know her stories hav gone around the world," Arleta says.

5-0 out of 5 stars Fun for the Whole Family!
"In Grandma's Attic" is one of the best character-building books I have come across. These humorous short stories convey history, family life, and lessons learned in such a delightful way. Reminds me of the "Little House" books, but with a greater spiritual emphasis. So glad we were introduced to this series through "Five in a Row" by Jane Claire Lambert, who recommends it be read in conjunction with "The Rag Coat" by Lauren Mills.

5-0 out of 5 stars Out with the Fluff!
If you are tired of all those books full of "fluff" with no real moral, look no further than the book-In Grandma's Attic! Little stories fill the pages of this delightful book that not only teach character, but have you on the floor laughing. I join Mable and her friend Sarah Jane as they find themselves in one scrape after another! In the end though there is always a repentive spirit and a desire to do better next time temptation pops up. Every story starts out with a little girl asking her grandma about something she saw or discovered that day, while visiting at her grandmother's house. The question triggers a story from grandma that relates to what she was asked about and so starts another humorous tale of the good old days! The whole series of these books is well worth reading. I didn't read them all at once, but over a period of time. Because as Mable grows so does her vocaulary and the stories get harder for young children to relate to. Wonderful read aloud books!

5-0 out of 5 stars This is a great series!
I read the "Grandma's Attic " books when I was younger and loved them. I recently went back and read them again, and they were just as enjoyable the second time around! The stories are realistic, humorous, and just fun to read. They make the adventures of Sarah Jane and Mabel seem real, and you get to know the characters and their personalities. Each story teaches a lesson or moral, and most have quotes from the Bible. I really enjoyed these books, and I think that most young girls will, too! ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars An excellent addition to my Christian library.
I wasn't even looking for a childrens book the other day when I accidentally happened upon "The Tale of Three Trees". I was brought nearly to tears by this touching little tale. I took it home and read it to my children that very night at bedtime, and even they were touched by this story. The sysnopsis above really tells it all. It is a story of Gods love for us, and his own unique gifts to us all in this world. I plan on giving it as a gift to friends with children, so they may share this special little story with them as well.

5-0 out of 5 stars WOW! This blew me away!
I had never heard this story before and had no idea what to expect when I read it...as I got to the part about the third tree's destiny, I started crying - it touched me that much...what a great lesson is contained in this simple tale -- each tree's dream was fulfilled although not precisely in the way that they anticipated...excellent jumping off point for discussions with little ones -- As the room mom for my 5-year-old son's kindergarten class, I got this book for his teacher's birthday and had all the children "sign" it - the teacher was touched by this powerfully moving story, as were the parents who came to her party...really a great book to keep and especially to give.

5-0 out of 5 stars Good, easy read for Christian children
My homeschooled children (grades 1 & 3) enjoy reading this from time to time. The binding is great, the pictures are good, the print is large, and the text is easy to read. A touching classic.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Book!
I received this book from my parents for a Christmas gift when I was 25 years old. And I love it! It has become my favorite book to give as gifts to every child...young and old. This book stays on my coffee table through out the year and I pick it up and read it all the time.

The story is very good and really makes you think about what God has in store of each of us...usally not what we think!

Would definitely recommend to every one!

5-0 out of 5 stars Tale of Three Trees- - - - - Spectacular
I received this book for Christmas this year totally amazed that my friend would sent me a child's book I thought of it as some sort of joke!! But as I read through the pages and looked at the pictures, my eyes filled with tears as the story unfolded, each tree received their wish, I was just amazed! Excellent book for young and old alike. 5-0 out of 5 stars All About Dinos.
Children of all ages love dinosaurs. They are fascinated by them and will soak up anything dealing with those creature of old. A question that usually arises when discussing dinosaurs with children is, "what happened to the dinosaurs?" This book answers that question in the most logical and plausible way. The book is quite informative not just for kids, but for adults as well. It explains how dinosaurs fit into the Biblical creation, exposes flaws in many popular scientific theories, and illumines the validity of a Judeo/Christian world view in science. Yet, the book is quite simple to read and understand and does not become bogged down in superfluous scientific jargon. An excellent read.

5-0 out of 5 stars Much needed information for our confused, scientific age.
When one criticizes this book it is no doubt because they don't understand that many Christian children are being fed disinformation in school, on tv and in movies. The book clearly explains (and proves) that dinosaurs did indeed exist after the flood and were not unknown to the writers of the Bible. It is not a book per se about evolution, but works well as a companion to the subject. Once we realize that dinosaurs are not as old as we're often told, the theory of macro-evolution is shown to be just that--- a theory, with no secure basis in factual history. I have owned a copy of this book since 1989 and frequently use it as a teaching aid, its bountiful illustrations rivet children's attention. But it is also useful for teens and adults who question the historic accuracy of the Sacred Scriptures.

5-0 out of 5 stars mystery solved
I found this book to be very useful in explaining dinosaurs to my childern in a way that is consistant with my Biblical beliefs. It answered my own questions and I recommend it to anyone of any age. It is a great tool for reinforcing what we know to be truth.

IN THE LIBYAN CITY of Ghadames, Malika watches her merchant father depart on one of his caravan expeditions. She too yearns to travel to distant cities, and longs to learn to read like her younger brother. But nearly 12 years old, and soon to be of marriagable age, Malika knows that—like all Muslim women—she must be content with a more secluded, more limited life. Then one night a stranger enters her home . . . someone who disrupts the traditional order of things—and who affects Malika in unexpected ways.

"I was enchanted by this story of a brave Berber girl who dares to dream and its filigree of details about harem life, ancient trade routes, goddesses and healers. I started reading this to my son about 2 months before we moved. He is still very young, but I think it might have helped to ease the transition for him.For older children it could be a great way to get them talking about an upcoming move.

5-0 out of 5 stars childrens bible
I bought this Bible for my 6yr old daughter for easter and was amazed at the content and structure. The language used is kid friendly. The detail of indexes and maps are great. A great gift item for any child which they will treasure forever God willing.

3-0 out of 5 stars Beyond 5 stars for content; 3 stars for production
The NIrV Personal Gift Bible has the same content as the NIV, NASB, KJV, NKJV, etc. The content of this Bible is fantastic. It is considered to be about a 3rd grade reading level and it is good for children and less educated adults. The only problem I have with it is the small print size. I believe it is difficult for young children and older adults to read this small print.
However, if one can read the print, it is very easy to read and understand. I do recommend this Bible or the adult version in hardback.

4-0 out of 5 stars nice starter
I wanted a bible for my children to start reading. I bought this very one for my ten year old son last December and he loves it. It is easy to read, understand, and has suggestions on how to set a goal to read the bible for example grouped by story similarity or by subject. Since he enjoyed his copy so much I am purchasing another for my daughter. The one problem I have is that it cuts out some of the detail but I think this is done to make it smoother reading. Overall it has become a great tool in our families quest to learn the word of God. ... Read more

This is a supberb means to teach my grandson about God's Word through hymns. The selection of hymns is very good. As a musician, I am highly pleased with the quality of the singing and of the arrangements. I hope to share this with many of my friends and family this Christmas. I highly recommend it.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great tool for a kid's choir
'Thank you for Hymns for a Kid's Heart. It is beautiful in every way. The singing on the CD is so well done'it is a fine example of quality children's singing as well as literature. I am planning to incorporate the book into the Children's Choir program at FPC this fall. I will include the cost of the book in the children's activity fee. The teachers will then use that book as their Bible study portion of the rehearsal. The following week, the particular hymn they studied will be a part of the worship service! I think it will be a great way to give the children insight into God and into the people who put our faith into music. Thanks again."

5-0 out of 5 stars Thanks from a Homeschool Mom
"What a wonderful new book. I love it! The idea is great. I heard y'all on Focus last year speaking about your other hymns project and thought it was great. I was even more excited to see one for kids. The CD has been playing non-stop in our car for the past 4 days. What a blessing to have children that are requesting Holy, Holy, Holy over and over! Your stories on the writers of each hymn are wonderful and will be a nice homeschool music history course!" ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Wonderful book for children and adults
My eight year old daughter asked for this book after her library teacher read it to her class at school. I rarely turn down a request for books, so I ordered it for her. When it came, and I read it to her, I couln't get through it without becoming all choked up! It is a beautiful story about a crippled lamb who, because of his lameness, is in the stable when the Baby Jesus is born. It is wonderful because it says not only does your infirmity not limit you, it can actually give you an opportunity for greatness!

5-0 out of 5 stars A Warm Offering
In this religious book for children there is a little lamb named Joshua who is crippled and his best friend Abigail who is an old cow.
In this story the other sheep make fun of Joshua and makes him feel sad and miserable. When the shepherds are about to take the sheep to a better pasture the sheered says that Joshua must stay here. When Joshua is awakened in the stable by some noises he finds a little baby crying because it is cold and there are no blankets. So Joshua keeps him warm with his own wool and the family is very grateful to him. Well it turn out that this little baby is Jesus the king, the so of God. Finally Joshua understands why he is cripple for if he hadn't had been he would not have been there to keep the baby warm.
This amazing book was written by: max, Jenna, Andrea, & Sara Lucado and was illustrated by Liz Bonham.

5-0 out of 5 stars WONDERFUL Story!!!
My mother bought this book and the DVD for my 2 year old daughter. Both the book & the movie instantly became her favorite -- she'll ask to read the book and watch the movie several times a day.

It is a wonderful story that will bring almost anyone to tears (maybe even "Daddy"!).

I highly recommend this book & movie for children of all ages (from 1 to 99).

5-0 out of 5 stars not a dry eye in the house
I hope I never meet the person who does not cry when he reads this book.

5-0 out of 5 stars The Christmas Story from a New Perspective
THE CRIPPLED LAMB is quickly becoming a new Christmas classic for children. It tells the story of the birth of Christ through the eyes of Joshua, a little lamb. Joshua is disabled and therefore unable to graze in the fields since he cannot keep up with the others. He has to stay behind with his friend, Abigail the cow who tries to cheer him up by telling him "God has a special place for those who feel left out." Joshua has the opportunity to be part of God's plan when Jesus is born. Mary and Joseph do not have a blanket and Joshua sits next too the child to offer him warmth and be a blanket for the Christ child.

This book is a collaborative effort of well known Christian author Max Lucado and his three daughters Jenna, Andrea, and Sara. The book also contains beautiful artwork by illustrator Liz Bonham. The artwork alone is worth the price of the book.

If you are planning on purchasing this book as a gift, I recommend purchasing at least tow copies. It is such a wonderful and heartwarming book, you may not want to give it away. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars A Father's Promise...
Oh My Gosh. This is one of the best books I've ever read! I had to read last year in my homeroom english class and I loved it! I always like to read ahead, so I did and finished the book in 2 hours because I couldn't put it down, and I borrowed it from the school library and read it again! It was great. It made you feel like you were right along side Rudy and was with him in every adventure. It's one of those books that make you feel good inside. I highly recommend it. I would have given it 10 stars if I could. If you're intrested in World War II, than this is the book for you. I got closer to God while I read this book, and learned to count all my blessings The Lord has given me. I loved this book and so will you if you read it!!!!!!

5-0 out of 5 stars An Excellent Book
When I first started reading A Father's Promise I wasn't so sure about the book but after the second chapter it was hard for me to put it down. Since the main character is only about my age it was even more exciting while I was reading. I would have to say that this is one of the most excellent books that I have ever read.

5-0 out of 5 stars A great book!!!!
