5-0 out of 5 stars A Christmas Favorite
A proud camel is selected to accompany the Magi described in Matthew to carry gifts for Jesus. He tries to get out of the journey (he has other commitments), but is convinced otherwise by some sand-blowing voices. As his journey continues, so does his burden, as gifts are added to his back. A young child even adds a straw for the baby's bed, that, well, I don't want to spoil the ending ("Will this straw cause me to fall?").

We used this book as the basis for our church's family Christmas Eve service. The children participated in a recreation of the Christmas stories in Matthew and Luke, and then settled in for a reading of this great book. During the story, we had two people in a camel costume come through the aisles, as "presents" were loaded onto baskets on the "camel's" back. It was a great success, and helped bring alive the oft-repeated Bible stories.

Thury has a great skill of weaving in enough adult humor to keep the attention of even the most holiday-weary parent (this camel complains of his joints, gout and sciatica, which all parents and granparents can relate to after weeks of holiday shopping, eating and "assembly-required" efforts). My seven year old has requested it again and again. Original, enchanting and a great twist on both the Christmas story and "the straw that broke the camel's back." Or did it? The pictures are outstanding.

5-0 out of 5 stars A Wonderful Story for Christmas!
This is such a wonderful book! Every year I look for a special book to share with my family, this year it will be The Last Straw. It is a humorous tale that also teaches a valuable lesson about humility. The Last Straw is right up there with Santa Calls and The Red Ranger Came Calling. I highly recommend this book! ... 4-0 out of 5 stars Nice but not for 9-12 year old reading level as billed...
A reading Level of 9-12 (years old) is shown for this book but this is misleading. It is a picture book with one sentence every two pages. Best suited for the preschool set (2-4 years old).

5-0 out of 5 stars It's the favorite!
My 2-year old daugther LOVES this book!! Has had it almost a week and wants it read every nap and nigthtime! "Tell me the Jesus stories" is what she says! Only 5 parables but she doesn't mind the repeating! Now we're looking for a Volume Two...

5-0 out of 5 stars superb book
This is in effect a continuation of the award-winning Read-Aloud series and is if anything the best of the bunch. It has the same size, very similar format, and same superb author and illustrator team. (It was also the last book illustrated by Kent Puckett before he died, so it is his legacy book.) Each of the five parables is introduced as a story Jesus told; like the parables in Scripture, all or most of them suggest the salvation story. The colors are probably a little bit brighter than in the Read-Aloud books but the illustrations are just as good. I have given it to several families with new babies as a gift, and my two-year-old nephew quickly chose it as his favorite book.

4-0 out of 5 stars Great for young children
This book is great for young children. The illustrations use bright vivid colors and the typing is large. The words and stories are very simple and somewhat repetitive so it is great for young children. My daughter is about to turn four and she LOVES this book ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Homeschoolers, take a look at this book!
I'm using this book for my son's third grade Bible program. It's fast moving and fun, yet very extensive with weekly memory verses and step by step bible reading and questions about the child's own walk with the Lord. It puts the child in the role of a movie director researching Jesus' life for a movie. There are lots of study questions, as well as games and puzzles to make it really interesting. Third grade is the very youngest I would have a child doing this study, in fact we are taking 2 weeks to do each weekly unit, and it would be just as interesting for an older child up through jr. high. ... "God's all there is and all that you see!""But I still don't see God so how can it be?"

Where does God live? How can we "see" God? Using simple, everyday examples that children can relate to, this colorful book helps young readers develop a direct and personal understanding of God.

Where Does God Live? playfully guides children down their own path of spiritual discovery...and reminds us all that this world is full of wonder.

4-0 out of 5 stars A Book to Share
This is a wonderful little book for children and their parents to share. It introduces the notion of the divine and its place in the world through images that are unique and enjoyable. There's no right or wrong way to see God in the world and this book helps children (and their parents) understand that.

My seven year old nephew loves his copy and has been reading it to his mother before he goes to sleep each night.

This is a simple book with a profound message.

5-0 out of 5 stars A super version and now there's a music CD available for it!
This is a wonderful verison of Pilgrim's Progress. It reads beautifully and while it does not have all of the scriptural references it hits the mark enought o inspire most people. I know many people who have read this one and then gone on to read the original work.

There is also a music CD available with contemporary Christian songs that tie to the story line. ........

5-0 out of 5 stars Enthralling version for children
I read John Bunyan's original work and found it wonderful, but I didn't feel it would entrance my children the way it did me with all of the heavy phraseology littered throughout the story. I normally detest "retellings" because they are usually literary trash not worthy of the time spent reading them.

This book was different. The story is extremely well written and maintains the rich flavor of the original story of Christian's journey of faith and his arrival in the Enchanted City. I read this version aloud to my four children, and they loved it. It is a chapter book, even though it looks like a simple "storybook." We took about a week with it at an approximately 20 minute per day rate. There are some alterations from the original, but nothing that changes the tone of the story.

The illustrations are exquisite, and I love how there are small paintings scattered throughout the text and not just large, page filling pictures. We checked it out from the library to read, and I enjoyed it so much I am planning to purchase a copy for our home collection.

5-0 out of 5 stars Inspiring and moving
I have read the original Pilgrim's Progress a few times and portions of it many times. I have also read various versions and several of John Bunyan's other writings. I personally love the theology and consider it essential. Mr. Schmidt's version of the story is compelling for some important reasons. Though it does not contain the lengthy discussions of theology, it opens a door via the story line to share the story with someone else. He has added some This hopefully will raise questions and hopefully a healthy discussion of the things that John Bunyan was trying to communicate to his church members whom he wrote this story for. As I understand it, John Bynyan was using allegory (like Jesus used parables) to make important Biblically grounded truths understandable to his people. This retelling hopefully will be the springboard for many to share their faith. Those that believe already will find wonderful illustrations and a unique and encouraging way of seeing their own journey through this world to the Celestial City.

5-0 out of 5 stars Allegorical Adventures
This retelling of John Bunyan's Pilgrim's Progress is a journey through the back countries of one's mind. Pilgrim takes the reader along the stages, discoveries, and challenges each person faces in his or her life. Each time Pilgrim faces and makes a decision, it forces a look within. The author takes this classic tale and moves it into contemporary language and idioms familiar to modern readers. By translating the essence of traditional religion into secular experience, Schmidt captures the struggles and solutions which face every person daily. Moser's beautiful watercolors crystalize the experience without diminishing the broad range of responses to the story. A wide range of readers will find themselves absorbed in the journey. ... Blackie stood watching the spot where the shadow had disappeared. Jimmy stared at the same spot. The dark shape surfaced again. Now it was only fifty yards away. Both boy and dog shrank back.

The shape surged forward, rolled, and curved toward the dock. Jimmy yanked his feet from the water.

Jimmy and Blackie, his dog, have been watching the dark shadow in the water, and Jimmy can't figure out what it could be. 5-0 out of 5 stars An Absolutely Beautiful Book
This wonderful book is deeply spiritual without advocating any one religion. A Christian family could read it together and take as much from it as a Jewish or Pagan family could.

A simple walk in the woods with Grandad plants the seeds of prayer in a young boys heart, seeds which help him grow when his grandad has passed and feels very alone.

"Each living thing gives its life to the beauty of all life, and that gift is its prayer," Grandad teaches gently.

The words are a bit difficult for the very young, but the gorgeously detailed watercolor illustrations seem to facinate all. I would recommend this book to all families who experience a loss of a loved one or who wish to introduce their children to prayer. Bereaved adults might also benefit from this book; reading it brought back memories of my father and walking and talking with him.

Buy this book for your children and read it to them for yourself. You won't regret it.

5-0 out of 5 stars Grandad's Prayers for the Earth
Heartfelt and warm, without going overboard on the emotions. I especially liked the way this book showed the love of the Grandfather for his grandson and vice versa. It's portrays a lasting and wonderful relationship. Perfect for my teenage boys. One of the best picture books I have read. I am sure this will become an instant classic that will stand the test of time. Douglas Wood's writing is concise with perfect timing, he carries the reader immediately into a quiet walk where you can practically smell meadow flowers and hear the trees growing. P.J. Lynch's illustrations are more than beautiful, they carry the tone perfectly and add individual touches of poignant reality to the script.

5-0 out of 5 stars What a beautiful book!
I love this book. The illustrations are gorgeous! I love how the boy starts out as a young boy and at the end of the book he is a teenager...this isn't a book for little kids, in fact I'd say it would be over the heads of most kids under age 9 or so.

I did not find it to be "new agey" at all. The author has purposefully written it so that people of all faiths can enjoy it. Yes, there is a section where the Grandad suggests that prayer is not just to get what we want...but to help us change ourselves. That is the theology I've been taught...after all, God doesn't need our prayers...He already knows what we need before we ask. Prayer is as much for our benefit as for anything God gets from it.

This idea is depicted in the end. After the Grandad dies, the boy is so sad that he stops praying. After awhile, he prays again, and feels a peace that he has been missing since his Grandad's death. I recommend this book highly...especially if you teach 9-12 year olds in church. It's a great supplement to a lesson about prayer.

5-0 out of 5 stars Remembering Dad
I first read this beautiful book at my church. I was drawn to it and read it several times when I had a few moments to spare. Each time I read it I was reminded of my Dad and the 8,000 trees he had planted for his grandchildren to enjoy. I gave Dad this book for Christmas of 2001 and wrote inside the cover saying that he should read the book to his grandchildren. Though we always thought Dad would live to a very old age we knew that he would be gone one day. Dad died just before Christmas of 2002 at the age of 74 and my mother gave the book back to me a couple of months later. I am a stepmom of three grown children and my first natural child will arrive next month. I was able to tell Dad that he had another grandchild on the way, but she will never get to meet him on earth. I will share the book with my older children, but I will read the book to my new daughter. I know I will cry when I read the book to her, but it will be a wonderfully touching way to remember Dad and help her to understand the wonderful Grandfather that will never be able to tell the story in his own words.

1-0 out of 5 stars Just a warning to parents...
The illustrations in this book are breathtakingly beautiful. That makes the reality of the text even more painful. If you have any type of faith that there is a higher power, this is NOT the book to buy to help explain prayer to your kids. It very subtly implies that there really is no one to whom we pray by overtly stating that there are no answers to prayers, but that we change ourselves when we pray. If you subscribe to a New Age-y type thought, then this book will fit well with your beliefs. However, if you have any theistic perspective, this may not go so far as to offend you but will certianly undermine your belief in such a gentle way, you might not notice. I think the review in which the person said the book would work for a Pagan or Jew was telling. How can a book affirm both belief sets? It can't. And this book does not. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Hunter
This book, for the very first time in the SWEEP series, is from the point of view of Hunter, Morgan's boyfriend.
Hunter is desperate to find his father, whom he hasn't seen since he was eleven years old. He has heard from his cousin Sky that she suspects that they are in Quebec, Canada. Leaving Morgan, reluctantly, he travels to Quebec and asks around for him. He finally finds his father who is in a pathetic state after loosing his wife, hunter's mother, Fiona. He is living on his own and is depressed and weak. Of course, Hunter stays to comfort his dad. After a while, he discovers that his father is using dark magick to stay in contact with Fiona, and it is seriously weakening him, and he is not allowing Fiona's spirit to move on.
Hunter's mentor, Kennet Muir, sends him off on a seeker mission to find a girl who is writing down the true names of things. And, as we know from Changeling, if you have the true name of someone or something, then that gives you power over them. Since she is writing it on paper, if the wrong person got ahold of the list, then it could be very dangerous.

VERY good book. Especially since it is from Hunter's point of view which is new, and you get to see how Hunter feels about things. And you finally realize that despite the fact that he is always serious around Morgan, he is more teenagerish and less seekerish in his thoughts. Especially about Morgan. Can't wait until the next book comes out!!!!

5-0 out of 5 stars -great book-
Book number 10-Seeker was great. It is from Hunter's point of view, which is cool for a change. It's neat to see things from his perspective. Anyways, Hunter is on a mission to find his dad whom he hasn't seen in eleven years. He reluctantly leaves Morgan behind, but he needs to find his father. When he does find his father, his father isn't in good shape. His father is obsessed with contacting his dead wife, and can't seem to stop. Then Hunter is sent by his mentor, Kennet Moir, to investigate a woman named Justine Courceau who is collecting the true names of things, including people. (which is bad because when the person has an object's true name, they have control over the object) Justine seems nice, but Hunter can't let her keep the list of true names. Between Hunter's father and Justine, Hunter has some stuff to deal with. All in all, it was cool to have Hunter's view on things for a change, as I said before.

The whole series is really good for anyone who is interested in a mixture of fantasy/Wicca. I have read all of the books out, and I can't wait for the next book to come out! Anybody who likes books like the Sweep series should also read : the Daughters of the Moon series, and the Witches Chillers series

5-0 out of 5 stars I love Hunter Niall!
This is by far one of the best in the whole Sweep Series. Since the story's told from Hunter's perspective you get to read how much he loves Morgan and how much her relationship with Cal hurt and still hurts him. His search for his parents helps him to discover that maybe his work for the council as a Seeker isn't what he's destined to do.

I love Hunter Niall so much and if he was real, I'd do whatever I could to make him mine. You can't help but love Hunter, I know I can't.

5-0 out of 5 stars Recommended to Parents who can¿t get their daughters to read
I purchased the Sweep series for my 13 year old daughter in the hopes that maybe she would read. "She hated to read." Well I was amazed, and could not get her to go to sleep, as she would spend the whole night, with a night-light on reading these books. She enjoyed them so much, and could not stop talking first about Cal and then Hunter, that I had to see what all the fuss was about.
Well after two weeks, a book a day, for a girl who hated to read, it sparked my curiosity, so I started reading, and was surprised to find out how enjoyable a Teen book about Teen Witches could be. I am not really into Wicca, but these books are really enjoyable. I am on my fifth book, and my daughter read each twice, and is know on the Circle of Three Series. I have to highly recommend these books to those parents who can not get their daughters to read. These are excellent stories, full of fantasy, horror, and fun.

5-0 out of 5 stars Three Words Why This Book Rocks: Hunter's View Point
I LOVE Hunter!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! If he was a real person Lord knows what I'd do lol. Hunter has finally located his father, and when Morgan realizes he'll be gone for weeks, she makes a big step in her life. . . Except Hunter pauses, much to his own regret, and the plan isn't all followed through.
Hunter is disappointed when he finds his father, weak and unhealthy, but when he finds out tragic news he is tempted to return home. The Council takes advantage of the cool Seeker's positioning to send him on a mission to investigate a young witch who has been collecting the true names of things and people. It is this witch who will cause him to betray Morgan . . . I really would like to tell you, but I wouldn't want to spoil it, would I. Let's just say I literally threw the book at the wall once I found out what he did, then picked it up and tried to continue several times but again threw it and nearly ripped the book apart in utter frustration. The library, I believe, was not happy. READ THIS BOOK. HUNTER ROCKS. His thoughts are much less infuriatingly collected and calm. Come on, you know you want to. This was my favorite book in the series, besides the one about Morgan's daughter. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars An excellent and easily understood tool to teach kids!
This attractive, hardback book "Parables for Kids" is excellently written and illustrated. Not only the Biblical story, but a contemporary one is presented to allow the child to put today's events and places and things together with the concept the Bible teaches. I used this book to teach a couple of parables to a large group and it was well received. I am eager to buy additional books by these same 2 authors, Danae and James Dobson, daughter and dad.

5-0 out of 5 stars Good for kids 1st grade - 5th grade
I am in charge of our church's children's church ages 4- 7. When I ordered this book the description said ages 4-8. When I got the book, it had long pages of text. I did not think that 4 0r even 5 year olds would sit still long enough to hear the story. I love the concept of the book, but I prefer shorter pages of text with illustrations that I can show the kids; or I think I will lose their attention. I do recommend it for ages 6 and up.

4-0 out of 5 stars An excellent resource to teach difficult concepts to kids
I particularly enjoyed using the story of the Good Samaritan. The authors do an excellent job of telling a modern story followed by the Biblical story then tie the two together. The Good Samaritan brings home the meaning so very well for kids. I would recommend this book or cassette for Children's Church or for home Bible study. It would also be good for young homeschoolers.

5-0 out of 5 stars Can't Stop Listening
We borrowed these audio cassettes from the library. My daughter listened to them over and over. Friends of hers who happened to ride in the car with us listened too, and they didn't want to get out when we arrived at our destination because they needed to finish the story they were on. Very powerful current day illustrations that all kids relate to. They make the parables of Jesus come alive. It's a shame the title isn't more catchy because some kids will miss listening because of it. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars AN IMAGINATIVE RETELLING OF A TRADITIONAL STORY
Hearts will be warmed by this imaginative retelling of the traditional Christmas story. Mr. Foreman's moonlit illustrations are perfect accompaniments for this long ago tale about a cold winter's night.

According to the cat who lived in a barn in a distant land it was an exceptionally frigid night. It was so icy that the feline was glad for the warm company of the cows. But just as the cat was growing comfortable the barn doors flew open to admit a man, a woman, and a donkey.

Before long the animals heard a baby cry, and then other visitors arrived - shepherds, camels with their masters who were dressed like kings. Oddly enough all of these people knelt in the mud before the baby.

That was a night that brought much change to the world, and even to the cat who was in the barn when a baby was born.

Young animal lovers will especially enjoy this familiar story told through the eyes of a very observant cat. ... Read more

Long, long ago, a poor young Jewish woman named Esther is chosen, Cinderella-style, to be the Queen of Persia. But while her new husband, King Ahasuerus, drinks, eats, and plays, his dastardly prime minister, Hamen, schemes. Infuriated by Esther's cousin Mordecai's refusal to bow down before him ("I am a Jew," said Mordecai, "and Jews do not bow down to human beings"), Hamen vows that Mordecai, along with every Jew in Persia, will bekilled. Ahasuerus is too distracted by his card games to pay much attention toHamen's decree, so it is up to Esther to save her people. Risking all, sheapproaches her hot-tempered husband (who did not know until now that Estherherself is Jewish) to see what can be done. Luckily, Esther's courage and cleverness prevail. Twenty-five hundred years later, Jews all over the world still celebrate Purim, a noisy, lighthearted holiday to commemorate the days when sorrow turned into joy.

Rita Golden Gelman has written over 50 books for children, including More Spaghetti, I Say!. In this playful retelling of the traditional Purim legend, she remains faithful to the original story, based on the Book of Esther. Frané Lessac's folk-art-style gouache paintings evoke the biblical time of Esther, and invite the reader to rejoice at Hamen's downfall. (Ages 6 to 10) --Emilie Coulter ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars The Purim Story
This is the best telling of the Puirim story that I have come across for children. The narrative is very close to the original, but what makes the book wonderful are the illustrations which are fantastic. They are so vivid that my children (aged 4 and 6) love the book and ask for it again and again, even when Purim is nowhere in sight. The pictures also conjure up images of a time long ago which helps to give the children a sense of a far away time. I have used the book in a service for children for 4 -8 year olds at an Orthodox synagogue and even those who generally protest at being there are spellbound. Highly recommended. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Amazing
I loved this book! It gives readers a breather in the series, since the most of the books have dangerous situations. This book is not so dangerous until the end, but it is soooo interesting to see the simalarities between the idea's of the people they meet and Christianity. It starts when Dr. Cooper and his kids investigate the apearance of a large, perfectly rectangle stone in a mountain pass. The tribe they meet behind it is very friendly to them. During their stay with the them they discover the tribe is expecting water to come from the stone to help them grow crops, although the army on the other side is terrified of it. Dr. Cooper's family also dicover the people have a religion very similar to Christianity, with some of the same stories that some from the Bible. In the end, the stone saves them all. This is such an interesting book, it was a thrill for me to read.

5-0 out of 5 stars Absolutley terrific!
Frank Peretti is one of the best authors on the face of this Earth. This book, The Secret of the Desert Stone, displays that talent. He perfectly captures the greatness, and soverigntiy of God in a creative way. Once again, I totally admire the Coopers maturity as Christians, and their complete trust in the Father.

5-0 out of 5 stars Inspiring, powerful, and an excellent thriller for all ages.
This book is a great book for all ages. I am currently 17 and I love it. It is a wonderful testimony of what you can do with faith in God.

Thrilling adventure stories introducing young readers (ages 8-12) to Christian heroes of the past.

I can't remember being this excited about a book in a long, long time. This is an incredible book. It is well suited to bedtime stories, family devotions, Sunday School, or homeschool. I use it for all of the above!

The illustrations are very well done. They are perfectly detailed to hold young childrens' interest, yet not too busy. The format of the book is large, so it is easily used for a group. Each story is approximately eight pages long and has its own style of drawing and font. The stories are told in child-friendly language, but unlike some childrens' Bible storybooks, they do not compromise the actual Biblical story.

Following each story are three pages of activities: prayers, songs (sung to the tune of familar childrens' songs), rhymes, crafts, snacks, games, finger plays, service projects, etc. The ideas are fresh and use inexpensive materials usually found around the house. For homeschoolers, the activities provide a variety of ways to incorporate other subjects into the lesson. The possibilities are exciting.

I can't imagine a more perfect book for teaching young children about God's Word. This is a great book.

Book Description

Tom Barton and his Uncle Jack live on the edge of danger, smuggling goods under the very nose of the king's searchers.Shrewd, brave, desperate at times, they make run after run across the Channel, braving rough seas, heavy winds, and a growing restlessness among their countrymen. All Europe is aflame with the writing and preaching of Martin Luther.

Tom and his uncle come into contact with another man, William Tyndale, whose work and prayer is to put an English Bible into the hands of the common people. While Uncle Jack sees only the profit in a religious Reformation, it is Tom who sees in Tyndale's work the dawning of a new age and a new way of life for himself and England.

William Tyndale was the hawk that dare not hunt by day.Hunted, hated by many, a fugitive in several countries, this humble man's pen changed the course of history. For modern Christians, he is the symbol of scholarship and courage, determination and meekness. For Tom Barton, he was father and friend, teacher and comforter, and the first true testimony of Christ in a godless age. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Be aware of the Publisher - don't be a racist
Bob Jones University publishes this edition of Scott Odell's classic. By bying this book you are supporting bigotry and racism as well as the subjugation of women. This book is published by many other Publishers buy it somewhere else. Everything that is being said about this book is very true, it is very educational and I have read it many times. I ordered it again because I wanted to read it in Germany where I am studying now and the book takes place. However, ... had many options of publishers for this book and they should be ashamed of themselves for choosing Bob Jones University Press. Especially after out own President was ridiculed for speaking there. They just recently started allowing their students to have inter-racial marriages and they were forced by the IRS for tax-exempt status to allow black students at all! I feel horrible that I bought this book from this publisher accidentally. Don't make the same mistake!!!!

3-0 out of 5 stars THE HAWK THAT DARE NOT HUNT BY DAY
This book is about William Tyndale getting Bibles to England in the sixteenth century. William Tyndale is a preacher who wants to bring Bibles over to England that everyone can buy. He accomplishes this by smuggling the Bibles he has translated and printed over in a ship called the Black Pearl. This story mainly focuses on the captain of the ship and his nephew who smuggle the Bibles for Tyndale. This story was slow to get going but was okay by the end. I would recommend it to people who like historical fiction.

5-0 out of 5 stars Action, mystery, and suspense!
The Hawk that Dare Not Hunt By Day is an excellent book which I would love to read again. It is full of suspense and mystery. It is even based around somebody's actual life, the life of William Tyndale, the person who first translated The New Testament into English. The book is by Scott O'Dell, the writer of The Island of the Blue Dolphins and many other children's novels.

Tom Barton and his Uncle Jack are the owners, as well as First Mate and Captain, of a ship called the Black Pearl. As a smuggler, Tom is always looking for a cargo that will turn a good profit. Tom meets a man named William Tyndale who is translating the Bible from traditional Latin into English, something that could get him hanged as a heretic. Tyndale is the Hawk that Dare Not Hunt by Day. He lives a life of constant danger, always hiding from the King's officials. He drifts from place to place until his own best friend betrays him.

This book is great and I'm surprised that it didn't get some prestigious award. I would love to read it again. The book has a lot of interesting vocabulary, and I would recommend this for ages 11 & up. This book has something to like in it for everyone, action, mystery, and suspense. ... Read more

The messages are so sweet and the words are appealing to young children.Nothing scary, just pure tenderness and comfort. It's a collection of one page stories, (each with a different theme) that interest young children - growing, blankets, rain, falling asleep, bath time, dreams, favorite toys etc.The format allows for good conversations to arise with your child.
