Around the world and throughout time, people have found words for comfort, strength, rejoicing, and mourning. Prayers, proverbs, poems, songs--everyculture has these simple gifts. 5-0 out of 5 stars Beautiful Gift
If you are looking for "spiritual" instead of "religious" this is a beautifully illustrated and touching book that makes a perfect gift for new parents, baptisms, etc.

2-0 out of 5 stars Disappointed Parent
I wanted to read easy-to-understand payers and verses to my 6-year old son, so I searched Amazon and reviewed many books on this subject. I was sold on this book's illustrations and was not disappointed on that score: The Illustrations are wonderful. However the "take a closer look" guide did not offer an opportunity to review the text or prayers themselves. The pictures alone piqued my son's interest and we bought the book. Unfortunately, many of the prayers are long and tedius, losing a younger child's interest within the first six lines. The text content is incongruent with the illustration's message of young, light-hearted, age-appropriate prayer. The attempt at multiculturalism and non-demonitionalism misses the point of delivering short, sweet, enjoyable verse suited for children; prayers that will encourage children to want to pray instead of associating prayer with tedium and boredom. The book review should have indicated an age-appropriate range. My son is a smart and attentive kid who loves to listen, but he grew quickly disappointed with and disintersted in the prose.

5-0 out of 5 stars for the young at heart
A wonderful book, and not just for children! Charming illustrations by several artists and 70 beautiful prayers from around the world. Anyone interested in spirituality should love this book.

5-0 out of 5 stars Wonderful!
This is a fabulous book that shares spiritual words from many worldwide religions and uses beautiful illustrations to accompany them! As a person who embraces different aspects of many religions, I found this to be a valuable resource for teaching my child. And after reading the book, you get a sense of how all religions are very similar and striving for the same things - peace and harmony with all that is around us and with our Higher Power.

5-0 out of 5 stars A breath of fresh air
This is a timely book with contents from a wide range of sources. It is well arranged and well illustrated. People tend to forget that they all have the same God. If some of the book's contents were quoted without noting the source, people might have difficulty identifying the religious origin. While the book is written for children, I would recommend it for the entire family. Perhaps it is time for people to consider that their beliefs are not very different. Perhaps children can learn to accept each other, and the next generation can learn to coexist in peace. One can always hope for the best. ... Read more

Book Description

How to survive being good

Like a flashback memory, he’s there in my mind: skimming up the stairs at school, his sloppy old T-shirt big as a sail, red tie-dyed dragon T-shirt, who wears stuff like that? No one. Jinsen.

The kids at Edward Rucher High School call Jinsen “Buddha Boy” and condemn him as a freak. With his shaved head and perpetual smile, Jinsen certainly doesn’t help matters when he starts begging for lunch money in the cafeteria. So when Justin is paired with Jinsen for a class project, he plans to get done with it as soon as possible, and climb right back into his safe social niche. Then Justin discovers Jinsen’s incredible artistic talent and becomes curious about his beliefs. But being friends with Buddha Boy isn’t simple, and Justin is forced into a cruel contest with the jocks who just can’t seem to leave Jinsen, or his artwork, alone.

Kathe Koja introduces an unforgettable young man who will remind readers of the true meaning of friendship and demonstrate how to draw strength from the little gods inside each of them.

5-0 out of 5 stars Koja makes the Best of the Year list. Again.
Kathe Koja, Buddha Boy (Farrar, Strauss, and Giroux, 2003)

I got to the point about eight years ago where I finally gave in to the temptation to predict an author. After the back-to-back triumphs that were Skin and Strange Angels, I figured that from here on out, anything Kathe Koja would release would be brilliant, and every book she released would find its way onto my top ten for whatever year in which I read it.

Then she started writing kidlit. I approached Straydog with some trepidation, but it not only made last year's best-of list, it topped it. So I had no such qualms hunting down her second piece of young adult fiction, Buddha Boy. Needless to say, I wasn't surprised, at least not by the quality.

Justin is an Everyman in an Everyman's high school; if you went to high school in America, you'll probably recognize all the archetypes to be found here. The school gets a new student, Jinsen. To call Jinsen, an aspiring Zen monk, different would be the understatement of the year. And we all know what happens to different kids in high school.

Justin, however, assigned to a class project with Jinsen, discovers that Jinsen is one of the finest artists Justin has ever come across, and thus grudgingly befriends the kid the others at school call Buddha Boy. From all this springs this small, delicate tale.

Koja's writing is, as usual, short and to the point. Even the slowest reader will probably get through Buddha Boy in no more than a couple of days. Most people will be able to find someone here to identify with (though many won't like what they see in the book's looking-glass), and the story is compelling enough to draw the reader through, perhaps in a single gulp. Nothing surprising there.

What is surprising, perhaps, is the language she chooses. It seems, especially in comparison with Straydog, that Koja's language is slipping back towards that she used in her adult novels. Not that she talked down to the audience in Straydog or that she elevates them here; it's a slight difference in tone, a barren quality from Skin and Strange Angels that was (despite the painfulness of Straydog's subject matter) absent from the previous book.

She's got a new one coming out any day now, The Blue Mirror. I can't wait. **** ½

5-0 out of 5 stars Buddha Buddy
When a new artistically talented boy shows up at Rucher high, calling himself Jinsen instead of his real name, and acting "strange", sophomore classmate Justin doesn't understand why, but he also doesn't know why Jinsen tolerates the continual harassment by the other students without complaint. More of a portrayal of friendship than of Buddhism, Buddha Boy shows how the practice of religious tenets can turn a person's life around. Koja manages to do this in a non-preachy way, noting through Justin's observations that "all religions are about the same thing" but that religion "doesn't seem to make any difference" in making people better or changing the way they act. Several chapters begin with Justin's comments on karma or other issues and then flash back to the events that formed them. Justin's growing concern about the way his classmates treat his friend, and how the school officials ignore it to serve their own interests, trigger actions that result in "karma" for both of them.

4-0 out of 5 stars Buddha Boy
In the novel, Buddha Boy, Kathe Koja describes the life of two boys in high school. Justin had never been popular, but he has always had two great friends. Everyone had been talking about a weird new kid at school, but Justin hadn't seen him until lunch that same day. A boy came up to him, and asked him for money, and that's when he got his name Buddha Boy. Justin becomes friends with Buddha Boy and starts hanging around him. Buddha Boy gets invited to a very famous art school, and has to make a banner for the school to use to make sure he's ready for the challenge. The day of judging comes but things go terribly wrong. In the novel, Koja teaches that everyone's different, but you should still accept him or her. Find out what happens in Buddha Boy.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great book for all ages... or at least tweens
There are coming-of-age books that deal with some things that are simple -- like love and sex. And then there are those that handle the harder topics - such as fighting cliques, going against the social order, or confronting inertia. This book is in the latter category, and is more about Justin, than about Jinsen (the Buddha Boy). Jinsen is harrassed daily by his classmates. This is half high school tale and half mystery, as new facets of the chracters are revealed in each chapter. There is also a dollop of karmic buddhism to give the story some uniqueness. The author has created a realistic story of Jinsen, a teenager who decides to live as a monk with a shaved head, calming smile, new name, and begging bowl. Justin, who is assigned to an Econ class project with Jinsen, must then face guilt by association, and decide what choices to make when confronting his parents, teachers, class leaders, bullies, drama club members, and friends. What sounds like a canned stereotypical story turns out to have much deeper nuances.

5-0 out of 5 stars Devoured it in one sitting.
Great book--similar to Stargirl by Spinnelli in that it portrays an individualistic teen who flaunts the established social behaviors. Would be great for discussion! ... Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars Could've been much better
I think it's time this series ended. Cate is running out of plot lines. Why couldn't she just let Cal and Selene be dead instead of bringing them back into the story again, the way she did. I realy wish Morgan would just let go of what happened with them earlier on in the series. The whole idea of Morgan having strange dreams has already been used before - remember in "The Calling" with Ciaran and Amyranth? I did however think that what happened with Hunter and the coven leader wasn't too bad but I didn't really see how the spell he and his dad created helped much. Okay, so it stops people from hurting others with their magick, but it also stops them from helping people - slight problem here. Anyone heard the expression "If you can't curse you can't heal"? I also liked the way Hunter and his Dad grew closer - they felt much more like father and son in this book. And finally, Morgan and Hunter actually had sex. And about time too. The sex scene in book 10 was terribly done but I thought it was much better dealt with in this one.

5-0 out of 5 stars The Conclusion To The Sweep Series Is Here With Full Circle
In Full Circle, the unfortunate end to the Sweep series, Morgan and Hunter share the narration. Hunter decides to quit the council and then tries to decide what to do with his life. Morgan starts to have these dreams with Cal in them and she realizes that someone is trying to kill her through the dreams. Is it Cal or someone else?

This was a great conclusion to the Sweep series. Although due to recent sales increase the publishers of Sweep are coming out with a Super Edition. The tentative release date for it is August 2003. Can't wait!

4-0 out of 5 stars Sweep Comes Full Circle
The final book of the series (although there is the Super Edition). This one alternates between Morgan's and Hunter's viewpoints.

Morgan is having nightmares and everyone thinks she might be the target of a spirit; possibly Cal's. Hunter is called to discreetly investigate a coven leader who might be being tempted by dark magic.

Hunter has resigned from the Council but is still interested in many of its ideals. Now he must juggle those, a sense of right and wrong, and still help Morgan with whatever is plaguing her.

While Morgan is trying to solve her immediate problem, she is awarded a scholarship to a school of magic healing. But in order to go, she will have to have the support of her Catholic family.

In the end, the book is nicely resolved and the series is tied up although there is plenty of room for more stories (i.e. what happens in Scotland?, what about Killian?, what about Alisa?, etc.). Very nicely done.

5-0 out of 5 stars Full Circle swept me off my feet
I really want the next one to come out soon!!! This book I read so fast that i read it again! It is filled with so much love that i wished that real life could be that way.
Morgan gets rid of her problems and falls more in love with Hunter. She goes through troubles but it falls together great in the end.
Hunter and Morgan are so great together, better than her and Cal couldve ever been. I think that im going to go read it again. Pick this book up when you are out.

5-0 out of 5 stars More, More, More
This cannot be the end. We need to see Morgan through her training in Scotland. Let's follow her through graduation. I've heard rumours of a baby. We need a handfasting!

This series has kept me turning pages. I can't wait for more. ... Read more

Benny adores helping out his Grandpa at the bagel bakery, the best in town. The young Jewish boy loves his grandfather's bagels so much, he wants to thank God for them. But how? One morning, he asks his Grandpa if he could pay him for his work with a big bag of bagels. So equipped, he heads for the synagogue, takes a deep breath, opens the big wooden cupboard that is the Holy Ark, and places the steaming bag inside: "King of the Universe," he whispered. "I brought You some bagels. I know You make them. But You never taste them, because Grandpa sells every last one." Benny keeps this up week after week until he discovers, to his dismay, that a poor man in a tattered coat has been eating his bagels, and not God. How will God know he is thanking Him if someone else is eating the bagels? Grandpa reassures him that by making the world better, he is indeed thanking God. Dusan Petricic's expressive, cross-hatched illustrations, each one as round and warm and brown as a freshly baked bagel, illuminate all of the story's best moments with humor and emotion. This simple, touching Jewish folktale from Spaintranscends Judaism as a story of human kindness and generosity of spirit that will resonate with all children. --Karin Snelson ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Meaningful
I shed a tear when I read this one. I can't wait to buy it and read it to our Religious School children. It is touching, poignant and meaningful.

5-0 out of 5 stars Winner of the 2003 SYDNEY TAYLOR BOOK AWARD!
Bagels From Benny is the gold medal winner of the 2003 Sydney Taylor Book Award from the Association of Jewish Libraries! It was selected out of nearly 200 eligible titles as the best Judaic book of the year for younger readers.

Based on an ancient Jewish folktale, this is a whimsical yet serious story of a child's attempt to connect with God. Benny's grandfather bakes the best bagels in town, but gives the credit to God, the source of the earth from which the wheat grows. Benny wants to say 'thank you,' and places bagels in the Holy Ark so that God can taste the results of His handiwork. Benny finally discovers that the bagels have been eaten, not by God, but by a hungry, tattered man, and is disappointed until grandfather explains that Benny has thanked God by helping others and making the world a better place. In some ways, this adaptation is more believable than the original tale in which a grown man places challahs in the Ark; after all, it is more developmentally appropriate for a child to believe that God needs to eat!

Author Aubrey Davis is a storyteller as well as a writer, and the poetic text has a "read-aloud" quality. Dusan Petricic's slightly surreal illustrations emphasize Benny's emotions. The palette leans toward a warm, bagel-y beige with splashes of brighter color. Small sepia sketches capture moments like Grandpa's eyebrows raised in surprise, or provide context by giving exterior views of the bakery or synagogue. The final illustration, which merges Benny and Grandpa with the starry sky, is a perfect metaphor for the oneness with the universe they've just achieved by thanking God.

While the word "Jewish" appears only in the end note, this is a story of strong Jewish identity and values. We see Benny visiting the synagogue, opening the Ark, and wearing a yarmulke to Shabbat services. We learn about Jewish values like gratitude, charity, love between the generations, and most of all, "tikkun olam," the repair of the world. It is not only the moral of the story that is Jewish, but the attitudes and actions of all its characters. While the Judaic elements of the story are not explained, enough context is provided for non-Jewish readers to understand them, and the emotional facets of the story can be appreciated by any reader. A valuable addition to Judaic AND public children's library collections, and to home collections as well. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars What's happening to Morgan?
Morgan's life is very similar in Strife as it was in the last book in the series. Her grades are horrible, her powers are strong but she needs to learn control, and her relationship with her parents are weak. In this book these few problems spin out of control. Morgan knows her father, Ciaran, is out there and even though the council is following him she still needs to protect herself. Hunter sets her up with a teacher that will show her out to protect herself and control her magic when strange things start to happen. Things fly everywhere, books, papers, anything at all, around Morgan. Morgan can feel that she's not doing it but who else could it be? Her father? Or someone else.

TO complicate things further her parents, who have never really approved of her studying Wicca, find out about her horrible grades at school. They blame the thing that has taken up so much time in her life, Wicca. Morgan knows they are right but she cannot let go of being a witch, it's a part of her. The problem is her parents don't understand that. And if the strange power around her doesn't kill her first, she may be taken away from everything she knows.

I found Strife to be an entertaining edition of the series. Like all of the books it was suspenseful, magickal, and a page turner. The problem was their was really no mystery in it. It was a tad bit predictable. But the great storyline nearly makes up for it. If you love the Sweep Series I recommend this book to you. I can't wait till the next one comes out!

4-0 out of 5 stars Sweep 9: Strife
In this book Morgan's life is still sorta [not good]. She's scared at the knowledge that Ciaran is still on the loose even with a watch sigil on him. Then things start happening when Morgan is around. Things start flying everytwhere. Morgan feels sure she isn't causing these "accidents". But then who is? Her father? Erin decides that it would be best to rein or restrict Morgan's power for awhile. Sky and Hunter agree. But things continue to happen and then they know it's not her. Meanwhile Morgan's grades are slipping, her parents are getting [upset] and threatening to send her to a Catholic boarding school. At the end of the book Hunter gets information that his parents are in Canada and decides to leave to find them.

In this book I so did not like Alisa. She was sorta...dumb. And did anyone notice that she was around when all these "accidents" occured. SHOCK!!!!

4-0 out of 5 stars Not the Best in the Series
I can only degrade this book to four stars, even though it was my least favorite along with the 11th one (somehow I couldn't bring myself to read anything but the prologue and the epilogue.)

Things in this book are started off by a tense boyfriend-meets-parents dinner, where Mary K discovers that Morgan hasn't exactly been telling her the whole truth. Alisa Soto has a problem with Morgan's powers and blames her for the things going wrong. Morgan's parents are deeply upset about her grades. The coven may be endangered. . . Because of Morgan's birth father. Can the trouble be fixed? Will Morgan's dearest friends ever trust her completely again?

4-0 out of 5 stars Strife
After an incident at one of Kithic's circles most of her coven-mates believe Morgan is out of control. She knows she isn't but how can she prove it. A visiting witch sees telekinetic happenings around Morgan, and knowing her to be uninitiated with a lot of power assumes what seems to be the answer. Hunter, his cousin Sky, and Erin, the other witch, must bind Morgans powers so she is no longer a danger to herself or others. Throughout The Council are searching for Ciaran - Morgan's birth father. When they find him he is in the company of a powerfully telekinetic witch who claims not to need proximity to cause dusterbances - is it really she who is causing the violence surrounding Morgan? And will The Council catch Ciaran and stop him from ever harming Morgan?

Yet another amazing installment in the 'Sweep' saga. I don't think it's as good as some of those before it, but it gets very close! Very Good.

5-0 out of 5 stars Wow!!
This book kept me guessing and guessing. It was great that through most of the book you had to keep reading to see what that meant. Alisa and Morgan are two different girls, but in some ways very alike. This book is just like the other ones, VERY GOOD! ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars A Delightfully Simple Explanation of God's Values
I found this book to be a terrific conversation starter with my five year old son. The story is simple... A king, whom everyone loves, goes on sabaticle and leaves his son in charge. The people, no longer able to see the king, start to doubt if there really ever was a king. Then they start to question what is "good" and what is "bad." Much silliness follows, but a clear parallel to sin is drawn. When the son tells the people they are behaving badly, they become a mob and attack him. Dad (the king) comes home just in time to save his son, and the people realized that they had been wrong.

A sweet story for kids, Topsy Turvy Kingdom is a great introduction to religious allegory and also works well if you're looking for a resource that will help teach your kids that everyone comes under authority.

I hope your family enjoys its thought provoking discussions as much as ours did! God speed! ... Read more

2-0 out of 5 stars Simple[minded] pantheism for preschoolers
Arthur Schopenhauer once said, "The chief objection I have to pantheism is that it says nothing. To call the world God is not to explain it; it is only to enrich our language with a superfluous synonym for the word 'world.'" So it is with this very sweet, very shallow New Age book for tots. If you teach a child that God is present in a tree, then better not take him to a lumber mill. Illustrated with impressionistic oil paint daubings.

5-0 out of 5 stars Loving "Becoming Me"
This is just a gorgeous book. Though I can imagine it would be perfect for children, the message and reminder about "Becoming Me" seems even more important for adults to read. Thank you for putting such a beautifully written and illustrated book together for those of us who tend to forget the simple beauty of who we are always becoming.

5-0 out of 5 stars Soul Food
A sweet and lovely little book, Becoming Me is the literary equivalent of a warm, gentle embrace. What Boroson does so well here is craft elegant prose that is clear enough for children to understand- yet profound enough for adults to appreciate -the wonder of having a soul. The first time I read it, quite unexpectedly, I burst into tears, overwhelmed with a feeling of gratitude. This is a book that I will return to again and again for its gentle reminder of who God is, who we are, and why we're here.

5-0 out of 5 stars Recognizing God in Each of Us
BECOMING ME is a heart-warming picture book that tells the story of creation from a very special vantage point -- that of the Creator. I find myself drawn so fully into this story that I feel I am experiencing what it is like to be God, in a universe where "nobody who knew that I was... but I was." Vivid illustrations splash a riot of vibrant colors to express the way spirit finds form in the physical world, as the words transport me into the mind and very heart of God. The most precious gift of BECOMING ME is summed up best in its pages: "Sometimes you realize that you are me." This book has a message so priceless that I'll enjoy it with my daughters for years to come... and keep long after they've grown up and moved off on their own.

5-0 out of 5 stars Truth and Beauty
As the world increasingly breaks with the habitual patterns of its prescribed roles, there is a need to describe the process of casting off the shackles of compromising conformity, and this book does this both simply and elegantly. With its broad and colorful graphics and its haiku like brevity, it leaves the reader full of hope and wonder. Bravo to the author, I look forward to more like this. ... Read more

2-0 out of 5 stars Worst in the Series
Of all the books in the series, this was the only one that I bought (rather than borrow), and it was the most disappointing. To me, it was a bit unrealistic and I don't think it sent the right message. Don't get me wrong, I like Moore's writing, but this one i didn't agree with- for instance, the way Payton tried to start preaching to that guy after his brother died (i don't want to ruin it for those who haven't read it.) I don't believe we should be preaching to people like that especially when they are upset. Don't ge me wrong, we should share our faith, but not like that- that get's on people's nerves. The best way to witness to people is by our actions- not preaching to them all the time. So in conclusion I say if you want to know what happens to Payton to end the series, read it. If you want to be entertained- this may not be the best buy.

5-0 out of 5 stars I love Payton Skky
I absolutely love the entire Payton Skky Series. I am 17 years old and I attend a residential high school for the academically gifted in LA, and I live with 200 females in a dorm so I could relate to Payton. Out of all of the books, Surrendered Heart definitly has to be my favorite. I was so excited when I found that Tad had forgiven Payton at the end, I felt as if I was right there with her. I have recommended the entire series to friends and family all over the country and they too have read the series and loved it. I pray that Surrendered Heart is not the end of Payton's journey, but if it is, it was a great way to end the series. Keep up the good work! ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Not just for kids
I bought this book to give to relatives with children, but liked it so much that I bought one for myself. I love the way the authors help us to think about the Scriptures. They don't just give "the moral of the story," but they really explain what the passages mean--yet in terms that are easy to understand. The writing is simple but very engaging, even for adults. This book is helping me to think about the Bible and about my faith in new ways. I never miss a day.

5-0 out of 5 stars Finally, a book for everyone in the family
Making Time For God is a Godsend! I have 5 children and I find it difficult to make time to read 5 different books every night.

This book satisfies the needs of all my children ages 2 1/2 to 12 1/2 (4 boys and 1 girl). The older kids are able to understand the text, and the conversations that follow our reading, include the younger children.

This book gives us a dose of reality and religion at the same time. It makes sense to us, is easy to read and we are able to apply lessons in our daily life. Making Time For God helps me as well, since I was not raised in a religious household. I am still learning alot, so I was happy to find a book that was not "over my head".

My aunt was so excited to hear about this book that she wanted a copy for her library.

Thank you to the authors. We love your book!!! ... Read more
