Book Description

Owen Foote wants to be a real scientist with a white lab coat. He"d like to spend the next school year in Mr. Wozniak"s fourth-grade class, where science is king. Owen figures that Mr. Wozniak will let him and his friend Joseph in if they can win first prize in the school science fair. But the "project," a uromastyx lizard named Chuck, isn"t exactly cooperative. The boys come up with another idea that seems like a winner, but once again, unruly personal feelings seem to be undermining the scientific method. It takes an inspired blend of science and friendship to get them back on track. Fast-paced and funny, this new story treats themes of competition, ambition, squeamishness, and loyalty in the appealing style Owen Foote fans have come to expect. ... Read more

"In his tiny bedroom, high above the city, Nova leaned over his workbench--wrapping, twisting, cutting, clipping. The evening sun glinted off his steel brow, then sank behind the crystal spires of Roton, making them glisten like rubies."

So begins David Kirk's futuristic picture book Nova's Ark, the somewhat complex story of a young robot named Nova, whose most precious possession (besides his robot dog "Sparky") is a brittle wooden ark and a set of carved animals made by humans in the ancient days of Roton. Nova misses his dad, who left on a space mission nearly a year ago. He dreams (when plugging himself into the dream console) of flying to the stars with his adventurous father. Exploration, it seems, is "in his wiring."

On a school field trip to the Space Center, Nova's world turns upside down. At the pilot's console of the Glax Cruiser, he can't help himself--he pulls the lever and the spaceship roars to life! Before he knows it he is lost and alone in outer space. Weeks pass. Months! One day, in his search for his home planet, he crashes into a mountain on a barren moon and his ship is destroyed:"There were no signs of robot life. How would he ever get home? Who would take care of his mother? Who would take care of Sparky?" He wondered if this was how his father felt on his lone travels. The next morning he awakes to a cheerful new sun and decides to concoct Sparky number 2 out of the wreckage of his crashed spaceship. He doesn't stop there! He builds a whole menagerie of animals... and last but not least "an elephant ark, whose mighty trunk bellowed a message deep into the heavens: 'HELP!'"

His distant father evidently hears the call, but crashes in his attempt to find his son, and is seriously injured. Each of Nova's robot animals gives something of itself to revive him... and Nova donates a valve from his own heart. It works! Of course, his dad has kangaroo feet... but he is alive! After many mechanical shenanigans--and a wonderful discovery of crystal energy that means salvation for their planet--they fly home to Roton and are greeted as heroes. Kirk, beloved creator of the Miss Spider books, has produced a masterpiece of 3-D computer imaging so vivid it recalls the set of Toy Story, but the plot twists and turns and dense narrative will demand quite a bit more concentration. 4-0 out of 5 stars spiral bound
Just wanted to mention this copy is spiral bound.Very easy for youngster to rip the pages out.

4-0 out of 5 stars eye candy
I rarely splurge on a hardcover book, these days, as my youngest reader is 8 years old.I purchased this book, however, because my daughter and I have enjoyed Miss Spider's Tea Party so much over the years. I read Nova's Ark to her third grade all-girl's class today, and it received an "A" ! The girls loved the pictures, and had questions about how the illustrations were done. They loved the plot, and at several points were able to make predictions at every surprising twist and turn. They asked me to leave the book in their classroom so they could re-read it and look over the colorful and whimsical illustrations. While we all missed the clever rhymes of Miss Spider fame, we enjoyed the language and style of Nova.We tried several robot voices as we read out loud. Also, the girls enjoyed seeing all of the clever animals Nova makes while on the planet Zyke.My daughter enjoyed the book out loud more than she has enjoyed perusing it on her own.A great picture book, and worth the investment because it's got eye candy!

5-0 out of 5 stars UNIQUE MENTAL IMAGERY!
From the very first page of text the reader is sent on an incrediblejourney with the main character, Nova.Nova is that child that we all canidentify with when he says "Is this how my father feels when he'saway?". The idea that his Dad will surely find him and finally theirreunion and struggle to get back home keep the reader totally engaged. Backat home Nova is greeted as a hero - something all children can identifywith.

My 6 year old liked the idea that Nova followed his dream ofexploring space. He thought that the illustrations looked exactly as he hadimagined outer space to be. He thinks it is great the way Nova brings hisspaceships and models to share with the class and the idea that they takefield trips. We read this book over and over never tiring of the story andvibrant illustrations.

4-0 out of 5 stars Impossible to keep your hands off
What a gorgeous book! It demands that you reach out and touch it, turn the pages, and look, over and over again. Each page has so much visual material that it will take a long time before this book becomes too familiar. You'renot necessarily going to catch the diaper on the baby robot the first orsecond time through, but these touches make it wonderful for childrenwhether they can read or not. In fact, the main problem in reading it aloudis getting them to let you turn the page. I would recommend this book forany child. Two minor caveats: The story is not up to the illustrations, butvery few stories could be, and it's enough to give the illustrationsmeaning;and one page has white text superimposed on a full-pageillustration, which makes for hard reading, especially in less than perfectlight.

5-0 out of 5 stars A great gift for kids
Lushly rendered with CGI, the same 3-D technique used in films like Toy Story and A Bug's Life, Nova's Ark is a pleasure to peruse. This book is terrific escapist literature for the kiddies, and a pleasure to read aloud. It's a rollicking good story about a little boy robot named Nova who goesthrough a series of accidental adventures.

The book reads somethinglike Annakin Skywalker meets Robinson Crusoe meets Wesley Crusher meets AWrinkle in Time.Nova is a typical boy robot who goes on a field trip andwanders off to look at a space ship. His father, after all, pilots spacecraft much like this one, and Nova is tempted to crawl inside.

I thinkyou can guess what happens next.

Nova becomes lost in space and crashlands on a desolate moon. With no one to talk to, he soon becomes lonely. Since his space craft has been destroyed, he creates some friends forhimself out of the circuitry and raw materials... ... Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars The earlier books are much better
We were given a copy of "Magic Schoolbus and the Ocean Floor" as a gift.I then bought "Dinosaurs" and "Senses."There is a difference between the books written only by Joanna Cole and the later books that are basically a comic-book version of the TV show.It takes us a solid 45 minutes to read "Senses", and I even learned some facts."Plants Seeds" is about a 15 minute read-aloud.I say stick with the earlier books.

5-0 out of 5 stars Across the Wide River
The awe-inspiring story of country-boy, Lowry Rankin, an ordinary youth intent on taking a stand against slavery. With the Bible as his guide, and a preacher for a father, Lowry learns early on, the value of human life no matter what the color of one's skin. Follow Lowry from his awkward grade school days to his action-packed adolescent years as he transports slaves to the next safe house en route to freedom. Throughout the story, Lowry continually questions whether he's really making a difference...the clandestine transportation of slaves under the cover of nightfall is one thing, but will he be able to publicly speak out against slavery?

Across the Wide River is a must-read for young and old alike. The selfless, servant-attitude and godly character found in Lowry Rankin is truly refreshing. The storyline flows logically and the sense of adventure makes it hard to put down! The descriptive adjectives peppered throughout the book make for very interesting reading. Hopefully, a sequel will follow!

Freedom- Some take it for granted. Others consider it worth dying for. Lowry Rankin knows all too well the cost of freedom; after all, his family's red brick home is the first stop on the Underground Railroad north of the Ohio River. He's seen friends beaten for the color of their skin. He's watched simple farmers make a difference. He's even risked his own life transporting escaped slaves. But will Lowry be able to conquer his greatest fear when he's called to speak out? This novel captures the excitement of the period, its dangers and moral dilemmas. There is romance and adventure. And, essential to the traditions of the Rankin family, there is witness to the role of God in mankind's affairs, both great and small. -James B. Powers a Rankin family descendant Across the Wide River plunges young readers into the life and death drama of the pre-Civil War Underground Railroad. -Peter Marshall Author, The Light and the Glory and From Sea to Shining Sea During her childhood, Stephanie Reed's family would often pass through Ripley on their way to her grandparents' home. The signs she read there about the Rankin house were what prompted her to write this story. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars FUN AT THE BEACH
We bought this book at the beach and could not believe how much more fun the beach was. We learned things that were new and VERY interesting about the ocean and the life that surrounds it. We take this book to the pool and also do experiments. This book is great to teach children easy science theories with water and in places where children play in water. We use it at home and on vacation. Love it!

5-0 out of 5 stars My favorite book at 8 and 33
This story asks the reader to feel the inner connectedness between nature and people. The poetry illustrates the history the earth leaves behind makes us what we are today. The descriptions of the landscape and the fossils encourages the exploration of the awesomeness of nature. The story reminds that civilization is not real but that nature is enduring, and that everyone shares this. The evidence of this shared past is a fossil and then later, it comes from the imagination. There is a pride in witnessing nature and understanding the inner connectedness of the world. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars 4 1/2 *Ms. Frizzle Leads the Way
A fun book in the "Magic School Bus" series, this is a fact- and pun-filled account of Ms. Frizzle's students (and parents) going on a field trip to learn more about bats. Some of the kids are a little nervous at first: Ralphie believes that bats are really vampires! The field trip shows otherwise, as bat-facts are presented in a creative and interesting manner.

The famous bus does do some magic here: Turning into a "bat bus" to demonstrate echolocation, and then turning the children into bats (temporarily!) so they can learn about bat food, bat predators, bat flight speed, and general "hanging around (upside down from the branches of a tree)." Facts replace suspicion (Is Ms. Frizzle herself a vampire?Did she turn the parents into vampires?), and the story ends with yet another pun.(Be your own judge about whether this story might be too frightening for the very young). With bright, colorful (but not extraordinary) illustrations on each one of the story's 28 pages, and two pages with letters about bats and bat facts. Probably not as exciting as Batman, but fans of "The Magic School Bus" and nature facts should love it. ... Read more

It's about this really smart 17 year old guy. He gets in trouble. Meets agirl. Thinks his moms crazy around the end of the book. Then him and his mom our very happy at the end. They have a normal life. Terrific book. I've only read 1 or maybe 2 books that i had enjoyed. But i'm glad that I liked reading it because I want to try to extend my vocabulary to it's highest point. Read it. I promise you wont fall asleep.

5-0 out of 5 stars I actually read the whole book without falling asleep. WOW!
When I think of reading, I think sleeping, yawning and boring. They make us read every single day. Their torchering us. And they say reading is good for your mind and for your health. I think bla bla bla. Get those books away from me. Groose! Now that I'm a teenager I know I need to extend my vocabulary to it's greastest point. Or I wont get any where in life. I was in the library one day looking for a book to read. I picked up a book called danger.com. It sounded interesting. I started reading it and it was an amazing book. I loved it. The best!!!

5-0 out of 5 stars Hot Pursuit is HOT.
I just finished reading this book and I loved it. I don't want to give the whole story away, but it is about a boy who has a whole bunch of lies told to him(even by his mother) and is wanted to work for some hackers to take over the world. You think you know the story at first, but it twists around at the end and it all adds up. This is a must read for people who like mysteries and computers.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great rainy-day fun!
My 7 year old son just loved doing these cookbook style experiments in the kitchen. It's great indoor fun on rainy days. It combines reading, following directions, treasure hunting through the house, and gross words that boys really love to say out loud. My son's favorite was making "fake dookie" which looked like animal feces but was edible!! Sounds gross, but nevertheless, tons of fun.

3-0 out of 5 stars Not Much Good For Educators
This book has a collection of experiments which draw from other grossology books. (Some of the actual experiments are in the other books.) I have used a lot of the Grossology books in my classroom to really help turn on kids to science, but this particular book is more suited to at home fun. If you have the other books in the series, this one wouldn't be worth it. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars one of the best books i've ever read
This book is amazing! Imagine you could control the trees around you to help you with your laptop. Well this is the story of how this happens to a gifted junior-high students working for an (un-beknownst) evil scientist in th jungle. I really recommend this book to all young readers, especially people who like science-fiction.

3-0 out of 5 stars Saving the rainforest
Grady is a very smart kid and because of it he is asked to spend a couple of weeks with a famous botanist. They are planing to save the forest with special trees. Grady discovers away to speak with the trees with different sounds. He finds out that the trees aren't helping the environment, they're killing it. When people figure out what grady is doing, he runs away. He camps with some indians. Grady teams up with the indians to try to save the rainforest. Can they do it, or will they fail?

4-0 out of 5 stars GREEN THUMB!!!
2-time national science fair winner, 13 year-old Grady Jacobs is kind of a nerd in school because he is "smart," but doesn't seem to care too much about it. He is going to spend the summer with a famous botanist, Dr. Phillip Carter, in the Amazon rain forest. They have to try to save the rain forest with some new type of "super tree," before it dies out. His job is mostly to cook, but he discovers something amazing, a system of sounds that lets him to control the trees, kind of like a language. He then discovers that Carters "super trees" aren't helping the Amazon, they're hurting it. Hurting it to the point where they're killing it. When some one finds out about what Grady is doing, and the experiments he is taking, he runs away from Carter's camp, and camps with the Urah-wau Indian tribe. Can he stop Carter from using his "super trees" in the rainforest?

4-0 out of 5 stars Environmental fiction mixed with Sci-fi
This book is a new twist from Rob Thomas, who dabbles in the sci-fi aspect. The story is straight forward...and continues the running themes of "fitting in" and not being singled out for teenagers. Grady uses his mind and is a very pro-active character willing to do what is needed to be done, and Grady's subtle humor will appeal to most of Thomas's fans. Grady is a wonderful character and I was very glad to get to know him...despite the "childish" cover it is worth your time and effort, especially for the visual descriptions of the rainforest.

4-0 out of 5 stars Junior high intellectual turns hero in fun adventure
I'm a big fan of Rob Thomas and this book did not disappoint. I'm also really glad it's directed at the younger reader since junior high kids have probably missed his other titles. (Rats Saw God, Slave Day, Satellite Down) The main character, Grady, is instantly likable while we witness him outwitting his football-star bullies by covertly pelting them with spitballs covered in hair remover. These bullies have beat him up for the last time, however, when he travels to the Amazon rain forest as part of a tree-growing research team. He loses his extra weight & puts on muscle. Not to mention saving the jungle from a mad scientist. It's a fun story that teens will love, with a main character that some may identify with. Keep 'em coming, Rob!! ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Simple & lucid, yet detailed -- absolutely excellent
This book is written with precision and detail. Yet, since it is aimed at young readers, it is clear and easy to read. The author explains in simple, easily understood language, the seminal inventions of the Wright Brothers. It is an excellent book for any adult who wants to truly understand how the Wright Brothers invented the airplane. I would reccommend it to any person over the age of 12.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent title, recommended
This biography on the Wright Brothers gets a big plus with the pictures it contains, many of which, thanks to the Wrights' interest in photography, were taken by the brothers themselves. The centerpiece of all the photos, of course, is the famous lift-off of the world's first manned, controlled, sustained, successful powered flight in a heavier-than-air craft on December 17, 1903.

The accompanying text is clear and interspersed with generous quotes from journals and letters, written by the brothers, acquaintances, and family. Relating in excellent detail the Wrights' lives from childhood to the height of their success in 1909 (as well as giving a basic account of airplane history up to 1903), Freedman goes over the Wrights' later years in just one chapter, which is its biggest drawback. Still, considering the focus of the book, this brief overview is understandable. Bonus features include information on the Wrights' use of photography during their work, descriptions of places connected to the brothers and flight, and a list of books for further reading.

The material used by Freedman is heavily based on the three most recent standards of Wright biography: Tom D. Crouch's "The bishop's boys: a life of Wilbur and Orville Wright" (1989), Fred Howard's "Wilbur and Orville: a biography of the Wright Brothers" (1987), and Peter L. Jakab's "Visions of a flying machine: the Wright Brothers and the process of invention" (1990).

With its readability and accuracy, this book would be an excellent addition to public and school libraries, and despite being classified as juvenile literature, adults could also enjoy this biography of the Wright Brothers. A Newbery Honor book.

5-0 out of 5 stars The Wright Brothers
Freedman's interesting narrative of the Wright brothers portrays them as proper gentlemen who wore suits with bowties even while repairing bicycles in their shop, mechanical geniuses despite being high school dropouts, and totally dedicated to their dream of creating an aeroplane. The photographs in this book were taken by Wilbur and Orville Wright themselves. In addition to being aviators, they had a fascination with photography and converted a backyard shed for processing film. They knew that documenting their progress would be important for future generations.

In this fast-paced book, Freedman makes the long ago brothers seem real. He describes their quirky behaviors and intersperses excerpts from journals and letters written by the Wrights. Freedman demonstrates their tireless perseverance by detailing how trial runs failed again and again. The Wright brothers are truly heroes, worthy subjects for one of Freedman's books. Any student interested in mechanics, inventors, or aviation would enjoy this book.

4-0 out of 5 stars Interesting
How They Invented the Airplane is probably the best Wright Brothers biography yet. It's written by my favorite author of the genre, Russell Freedman. (Lincoln: A Photobiography)

The only thing that made the book a little less enjoyable was the lack of information about the childhood of Orville and Wilbur. Also, I found myself asking questions about The Wright's parents and and siblings, who were weakly potrayed in the book Every other bit of information was intact, and the affect was this great book.

5-0 out of 5 stars The Wright Brothers is probably the best book ever written
Wilbur Wright, the brother with visions, invented the airplane along with Orville Wright, the brother who loved to tinker. Wilbur once said, " My brother Orville and myself lived together, played together and, in fact thought together." Wilbur and Orville persevered in their struggle against Mother Nature, the public opinion, and failed flights and experiments to fulfill their dream of making a flying machine.
This biography tells the story of the lives of the Wright brothers, from the time they were little boys tinkering with toys, to when they finally sold their marvelous invention to the United States government. This book shows how the airplane started out as a glider, then evolved into a plane that stayed in the air for 5 seconds, and finally into a plane that stayed in the air for an hour and 13 minutes. It also explains how getting the government to buy their plane was a difficult task because it had already spent $70,000 on another person who tried to invent the airplane. Luckily, the government said yes after the Wright brothers had built a better plane. This book also contains miraculous pictures of Wilbur and Orville's flights and failures.
I recommend this book to anybody who enjoys biographies or who wants to sit back and relax with a good book. This book is an all around good read but what especially sticks out is that it shows that if you put your mind to something you can always accomplish it, no matter how difficult the task. ... Book Description

Rachel can't imagine why Bucky Greene, a scientist friend of her father's who's developing genetically engineered bananas, would show up at their New York City apartment in the middle of the night to leave a baby chimpanzee with them for a week -- or why they absolutely, positively can't tell anyone about it. What could possibly be "top secret" about an adorable chimp like Friday?

Rachel hasn't a clue, but when Friday turns out to be really, inexplicably intelligent (Rubik's Cube's a snap) -- and Bucky Greene turns up really, inexplicably dead (he slipped on his own banana peel) -- she suspects serious monkey business afoot. And when chimp-nappers step into the picture, getting to the bottom of Friday's "top secret" before it's too late becomes a delightfully madcap mystery -- with Rachel in a riotous, nonstop race for survival of the fittest.

Written by four-time Emmy-nominated writer and acclaimed humorist Hester Mundis, who raised a chimp of her own in her Manhattan apartment, this is a wonderfully funny -- and heartfelt -- novel about endangered species, corporate espionage, and going bananas in more ways than one. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars He's one smart little ape.
Do you like animals stories? Do you like mysteries with lots of slapstick humor and puns? Then I know you'll enjoy MY CHIMP FRIDAY, because it's all those things rolled into one.

When 12-year-old Rachel first sees Friday he's a small, frightened bundle of enchanting fur who reaches out to hug her and cling to her neck. Naturally, she goes "ape" over him. The fantastic news is that the strange little man who brings him to Rachel's home at 2:00 in the morning says they get to keep him --- for a while. But they can't tell anybody they've got him. How can Rachel and her little brother Jared keep a lively chimpanzee with 32 varieties of ear-splitting howls, yowls, and screeches a secret --- especially from nosy Aunt Lisa? It's definitely going to be a challenge.

It's also a challenge when Rachel finds out that the strange little man who left Friday with them slipped on a banana peel and died. As sad as that seems sad it's also a little mysterious. And Rachel loves a good mystery. But first and foremost, Rachel figures this means she gets to keep Friday for good. Wow! Her own little baby chimpanzee!

And he's a smart baby. Incredibly --- one might even say mysteriously --- smart. He can type real words on computers. He understands what people say to him. He's one smart little ape, and some bad people "ape-solutely" want him for themselves.

What will these people be willing to do to him to discover his secret? Read MY CHIMP FRIDAY to find out how Rachel unravels the mystery and maybe you'll learn Friday's secret!
