Book Description

Captain Arsenio was a curious man who liked, more than anything, to tinker and explore. One day in 1782, he decided that he would put his unusual skills to work in a most ambitious way: he would build a flying machine.

Despite a hodgepodge of materials (and a total unawareness of the laws of physics), Captain Arsenio aimed to get his feet off the ground and his head in the clouds—temporarily, at least. But would any of his crazy inventions ever achieve flight?

In this hilarious fictional account, Pablo Bernasconi imagines a legend in the making—a retired cheesemaker and scuba diver turned inventor who sets off to fly with the birds, in spite of himself.

5-0 out of 5 stars Neato, I must say...
When I ordered this book, there was no other review for me to go upon. I judged this book solely on its cover and I am very pleased. The pictures are beautiful (in an ordinary way) and fit the story very well. However, they are not in the same league as K.Y. Craft or Mercer Mayer's fairy tale work. One thing that I found very helpful within this book for a classroom is the diversity pictured. The King and Queen's friends are all different colors and different cultures, which teaches young children an important lesson. My favorite is Maya Monsoon. The story also teaches children the importance of compromise and settling arguements with words not actions. The story is a creative way to explain the changing of the seasons and weather, with the neat addition of the King and Queen's friends. This book does a nice job explaing something quite complicated to young children. Enjoy! ... Read more

It's 1945, and 13-year-old Stephen has just reached the gates of the topsecret military base in Los Alamos, New Mexico. He has come to join his father,a famous physicist who is working on a covert project for the Allies. Though hisfather is forbidden to discuss the project in any detail, Stephen can tell byhis haunted eyes and shaking hands how worried he and the other scientists are. After a few weeks, Stephen finds that he cannot control his insatiablecuriosity. Enlisting the help of his new friend Tilanov, Stephen devises a planto discover the true nature of "the gadget." But when he finally learns what itis, he also realizes another startling truth--that he has trusted the wrongperson with the information and not only his life, but the lives of allAmericans, could be in terrible danger.

The greatest strength of The Gadget is how Paul Zindel communicates, inclear and simple prose, how terribly uncertain many of those "in the know" wereabout dropping the atom bomb, and the idea that no one--not even topscientists--could really predict what the outcome would be. By combining thisdisconcerting notion with a rapid-fire plot and an Everyman teen protagonist, young adult veteran author Zindel has created a historical fiction that readslike a thrilling action-adventure pulp novel, except, (and this is the bestpart)--it's all true. Curious readers will also find a World War II chronology, bibliography, and short bios of prominent figures involved in the making of theatom bomb. (Ages 11 to 14) --Jennifer Hubert ... Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars A Good Book
This book is a pretty good book, but I think it could have been less of a mystery and then it would have been a much better book. This book was still a good book because it had a lot of action in it and I like a lot of action in my books. Then also this book is a kind of a sad book. His best friend died. So over all I would recommend this book to those people who like a lot of action.

This was an awesome book but the part where Jackson dies I think is the saddest part of the book because it hurts bad when you lose a best friend

5-0 out of 5 stars The Gadget is it "Too Good"

They both like to explore the unknow and discover the undiceded. My son enjoys this book because it explains how an airplane works. Ms. Frizzle's class takes a field trip to the model airplane show. When on student gets curious about flying, Ms. Frizzle decides to take the students to get on the airplane. They run into problems when Tim trips over the binoculars & breaks the controls. The class learns how the airplane stays in the air & when you move the propellers on the airplane the plane turns directions. I every child should read The Magic School Bus series

Second-grade teacher Ms. Splinter takes going to the circus very seriously. After all, there is important circus-related information that she must communicate to her class. And that means no fidgeting. Ms. Splinter's mini-dissertations on various circus animals and performers make up the text of this lively picture book: "According to the dictionary, clown comes from the Old Norse word klonne, meaning 'clumsy fellow.' Now, sit still, class, hands on laps. Let's leave the clowning to the clowns." What Ms. Splinter doesn't know (but readers do know from the pictures), is that young Emeline slips away from the class to feed peanuts to the elephant, is swooped up by the elephant's trunk, isplunked down in front of a klonne, and becomes part of the circus herself! Caldecott Honor winner Marjorie Priceman's breathtakingly gorgeous, color-soaked illustrations tell their own story as Emeline swings from a tightrope, nearly falls into a hippo's mouth, is saved by a strongman, faces off with a tiger, and kisses a monkey. Only when Emeline starts performing on the flying trapeze does Ms. Splinter catch on. "What an expert aerialist!" she cries. "What a brave little..." "EMELINE!?!" Needless to say, kids will relish the fact that Ms. Splinter is left in the dark as Emeline has her day in the sun. (Click to see a sample spread. Copyright 1999 by Marjorie Priceman. 5-0 out of 5 stars Marjorie Price meets Raoul Dufy
The artwork is exceptional. Elephants, giraffes, tigers, clowns and of course Emeline move through the pages with unequaled grace and cheerfulness. What appears to be a blotch of primary colours at first glance is almost magically transformed into subtle and tender characters who might justly be called the sophisticated french painter Raoul Dufys great-grand-children. Two-year-old readers already take delight in following the hidden plot which the adult reader is likely to miss at first reading. A wonderful surprise and sweet lesson for the rereading parent. However, dont overwhelm little ones with the text. Miss Splinters commentary is more likely to find an interested and laughing audience in 5-7 year-old children. ... Read more

Earth Day Birthday is a beautifully illustrated picture book for young readers, demonstrating the wonder and importance of the planet's varied environment and the amazing creatures who thrive in it. The text by Pattie Schnetzler is patterned after the popular "Twelve Days of Christmas" song; each two-page spread features lavish color illustrations and lyrics such as "On the eighth Earth Day Birthday the wide world gave to me... / Eight cranes a-dancing / six owls a-hooting / five spotted fawns / four salmon leaping / three panthers creeping / two grizzlies sleeping / and a bald eagle in a blue sky." The final two pages offer a brief history and incentive to celebrate Earth Day, as well as the simple music for singing aloud. Wonderfully enhanced with the artwork of Chad Wallace, Earth Day Birthday is a counting book classic to share with preschool and kindergarten age boys and girls.

Book Description

Back in 1923, a long-distance telephone call took hours to place, and overseas calls weren't possible at all. But a new invention, called wireless radio, permitted instant communication over long distances. A young boy, itching to get involved, buys a secondhand receiver and earphones, and studies hard to learn Morse code so that he can pass the test to qualify as an amateur radio operator and get his own station: 2AZK. Its fun talking with people all over the world just by tapping on his telegraph key (and readers can tap along - there's Morse code to follow in the pictures). Then one night he picks up a distress signal from Florida -- family stranded in flood -- and uses his skill for something more important. Based on the author's father's experiences as a young ham operator in the 1920s, Radio Rescue is an exciting story of a moment in technological history.

4-0 out of 5 stars Telegraph Transmit
Radio Rescue shows how even young people can help others. Lynne Barasch writes about her father as a 10-year-old boy, who in 1923 falls in love with the newly created telegraph machine and spends two years becoming a telegraph operator. This boy became an experienced operator and in 1926 was able to relay a message which lead to the rescue of a family in Key Largo, Florida.
This is an historical non-fiction picture book with full-page color cartoons written in first person from the perspective of the author's father. The book also includes a time line of the invention of the telegraph, a list of the advantages of the telegraph, and a chart of Morse code.
Radio Rescue is suggested for 5-8 year olds but 8-11 year olds would understand the concept better. Robert J. Marx, the author's father, wrote [this book is a] "mostly true and faithful recording of my very younger days"...[and he is] "...stil completely [sic] fluent in Morse code as I learned it at age 10..."

5-0 out of 5 stars A great way to introduce a young person to a life adventure
Ms. Barasch has done a superb job of capturing the essence of amateur radio. This book speaks to the young reader as an equal, and tells with enthusiasm the story of a young boy who was caught up in the exciting time when radio was becoming an important broadcast medium, but was developing rapidly as a long-range two-way communication system... I heartily recommend this book! Buy it as a gift for every young person you know!

5-0 out of 5 stars Great radio adventure story
I use this in my "Ham Radio for Kids" class. My boys read this book over and over again, and I like the story too - it reminds me of the excitement of getting my ham license at age 13. Rich - KY6R

5-0 out of 5 stars Radio, Rescue and Much, Much More
Back in the 1920s communication wasn't as easy as it is today. Telephones didn't have dials or buttons and operators had to place your calls for you and this could mean waiting several hours to finally get to talk to someone. Lynne Barasch has taken a little bit of personal history and authored a wonderful picture book about the wireless radio, the first instant communication. Her father, the book's hero became the youngest licensed amateur radio operator in the country. Radio Rescue is his story of how he went about learning Morse Code and international signals, passing the test and getting his license, setting up his station and aerial and finally communicating and making new friends all over the world. And though it started out as a hobby, for fun, during the Florida hurricane of 1926, when all the phone lines were wiped out, he was instrumental in relaying news and rescuing a Key Largo family..... This is an informative and exciting story full of history, fun facts and detail kids 6-10 will really enjoy. The easy to read, first person text, complete with Morse code, is complimented by the simple, expressive illustrations and together they're sure to peak the interest of possible future ham radio operators.
