5-0 out of 5 stars My son's all-time favorate fire fighting book -- mine too!
My son judges a bookstore or library by number and quality of fire engine books. This book is our favorite. There is information in this book that is not in any other book we've read (and we have read many) and still it is an easy read. Gail Gibbons does a great job packing information into 4-8 year old bite sized pieces.

5-0 out of 5 stars Fire! Fire! Awesome! Awesome!
I purchased this book for my 3 year old son with the intent to acquaint him with exactly what firefighters and their apparatus do.

I recently joined our local volunteer fire department and my son has been afraid of the sirens of our nearby station for a while now. This book was a big hit with him and me!

This book organization of this book gives it 4 sections for paid (city), volunteer (country), forest and harbor departments. My son loves the illustrations and sits and listens intently to the descriptions. Each page contains illustrations displaying smoke detectors, hoses, personnel, and fire equipment that are all well labeled.

This is a must buy if you need a firefighters book for your child!

5-0 out of 5 stars All kinds of fire fighters!
My 5.5 yr old son LOVES this book! He renewed it for four weeks at the school library before they made him turn it in, and then cried about it. The book teaches kids about different kinds of fire fighters. Most of us think of a fire fighters down at the fire station but it also encompasses smoke jumpers, water front fire fighters and more. I found it interesting to read to him too. ... Read more

Have you ever awakened to blaring sirens, passed a fire station and paused to look inside, wondered how the trucks, ladders, and hoses work, what happens after a fire is extinguished, or how a person becomes a firefighter? From colonial bucket brigades to the modern technology that allows firefighters to respond to emergencies in seconds, the challenging task of fighting fires is one of the most vital jobs in our communities. This in depth look takes readers behind the fire station doors, beyond the fire line, and into the day-to-day lives of the highly skilled men and women who risk their lives to save people and protect property from the ravages of the nearly 2 million fires that occur in the United States each year. 5-0 out of 5 stars Firefighting: Behind The Scenes
This is a great book for anyone who is thinking of being a firefighter or if you enjoy reading about firefighting. I was amazed on how many colored photos were in this book, and how much information was included in the captions. This book tells about the history of the fire service from the days of George Washington to the present. This book also tells about the different types of fire engines, fire trucks, and rescue vehicles there are,and how they are used to do different jobs at the fire scene. It tells the different hose sizes and the different nozzles that the fire engine carries, and which nozzle is used for which fire. It also tells about the different tools each of the vehicles have. The book tells about how many firemen ride on the vehicles and the different jobs each of them have. It also tells all that happens on the fire scene from when the firefighters first arrive on the scene to until they leave. The book also tells the basic training for a firefighter, and all of the information they have to know. It also tells of the safety each of the firemen have, and about all the protective clothing all the firemen have. The book also lets you know the regular day that a fireman goes through. Finally, the book has a safety section,in the back of the book,to tell children what to do in case of a fire or if they are on fire. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Good one for the smaller readers
Ok, so I have to admit that I am mentioned in this book, but this is not why I gave it 5 stars. When I reviewed this book a number of years back I found it to be a great introduction to younger readers about the fire service. It also shows the diversity of the fire service today as well as where it is heading in the future and where it came from in the past.Even if you don't have a young one, get a copy for your fire library at home, or even at the fire station.

5-0 out of 5 stars An Exciting Look at Modern Fire Fighting
An excellent follow up to Emergency also by Joy Masoff. Tons ofgreat color photos let the average person feel like they are actuallyin a burning building spraying water over a blazing fire. The book also shows a lot of the very high tech equipment used to fight fires today. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars A good read
I'll keep this short, but I must say that I found this book very well laid out both in words and pictures. Worth buying!!!

3-0 out of 5 stars A little dry
This book somehow gets lost in the space between entertainment and education. It's too dry to be entertaining, unless you are just dying to find out what an SCBA is. And it's really too light to be of any use for education. Make up your mind about what you want and go for either "Fighting Fire" by Caroline Paul (entertainment) or "Essentials of Fire Fighting" for educational use. ... Read more

Book Description

Hugo and Bridgit are two kids who tell each other about their likes and dislikes—things that interest them and things they like to do. Then, with grownups' guidance, they visit interesting places where they might like to work when they grow up. In this book, Hugo and Bridgit spot a neighborhood fire and help save the day. Later, the firemen invite them to the fire station, where they learn how a fire department operates. Bridgit and Hugo ask questions that most young readers would ask, and get answers that make good sense to kids. But they also have to answer questions of their own. The kind of answers they give will help them understand their own interests, special abilities, and likes and dislikes. This way, boys and girls can figure out which careers will give them the most satisfaction and success when they grow up and go out on the job. Books mix cartoon-style illustrations with photos of fascinating work places, all in full color. ... Read more
