On the first day of school, Emily's teacher, Miss Cribbage, tells the class that they will make a new number friend every day for the first 100 days of school. Everyone will have a number book in which to write numerical discoveries and musings. Eager Emily dives right into the project. On the second day of school, Miss Cribbage teaches a song called "Tea for Two." On day three, Emily writes about her school bus, No. 3. In square dancing, Emily learns that there are four corners to a dancing square. She picks five different vegetables from her garden for her father to use in his tomato-zucchini-pepper-carrot-eggplant soup. From day one to day 100, Emily and her classmates expand their creative and mathematical skills as they immerse themselves in the exciting early days of school.

Rosemary Wells, beloved author and illustrator of dozens of picture books, and creator of the mischievous Max character (Max's First Word, Max's Chocolate Chicken, and others), has accomplished a remarkable feat: finding 100 days' worth of entertaining "number friends." The 100th day of school can be an important milestone--and a great learning tool! Emily is an adorable Wellsian bunny, complete with pudgy cheeks and sweet little jumpers and overalls. For more excellent 100-day picture books, try Margery Cuyler's 100th Day Worries and Joseph Slate's Miss Bindergarten Celebrates the 100th Day of Kindergarten. (Ages 4 to 8) --Emilie Coulter ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Emily's First 100 Days of School is a delightful book.
In this very charming book, Emily starts school and her teacher, Miss Cribbage, has them write a number down in their number books for each of the first 100 days of school. The pages are bright and colorful and the numbers are easy for small children to read. Each number has a lesson to be learned from it. Ms. Wells' characters are as always cute and adoreable. My twin four year girls absolutely loved this book. It is an excellent book for teaching numbers from 1 to 100. I would recommend it to anyone.

5-0 out of 5 stars Another winner by Rosemary Wells--just delightful!
This book is really special! Emily counts off the first 100 days of school by talking about each and every number and matching it up with something to do with that day--her sister Eloise learning to play Seventy Six Trombones, her class learning about the nine planets, the prizewinning pumpkin at the fair weighing 33 pounds, and so on! The book is oversized, and filled with great Wells pictures. In the short piece of info given with each number, we get to know Emily's family and the joys and sorrows of her first year of school. We've read this book over and over. It's great for a child just starting to get excited about numbers, as they can look up their favorite ones to see what that number has associated with it. It would also be a great book for a child starting school. If you love Rosemary Wells, as I do, you knew you would like this book, but even I was impressed with how special it is!

4-0 out of 5 stars Emily's 100 days
Emily is so excited to go to Kindergarten. Her teacher helps the children to count off the first 100 days of school, and every day has a number.

Each page has from 1 - 4 days of school illustrated on it. Each numbered day is significant, either on a historical, cultural or kindergarten level.

Future and current kindergartners and their parents will be charmed by this book.

My only reservation about it is that it is 58 pages long. This is not a book that you could read in one sitting with your average 5 or 6 year-old. My recommendation would be to do it in small chunks - once a week or once a month - throughout the beginning of the school year.

It has wonderful ideas of how to celebrate and enjoy the school year in small ways, including the traditions of many cultures. Not only is it a great way to count, but also a way to explore cultural diversity.

Any fan of Rosemary Wells will be well satisfied with this book.

If you are looking for a book that you can read in one sitting with your child, try Miss Bindergarten Celebrates the 100th Day by Joseph Slate. This book is actually an alphabet book in which each student's name starts with a different letter, and there is a sentence telling what each is bringing to celebrate the 100th day. ... Read more

Book Description

Suki’s favorite possession is her blue cotton kimono. A gift from her oba¯chan, it holds special memories of her grandmother’s visit last summer. And Suki is going to wear it on her first day back to school — no matter what anyone says.

When it’s Suki’s turn to share with her classmates what she did during the summer, she tells them about the street festival she attended with her oba¯chan and the circle dance that they took part in. In fact, she gets so carried away reminiscing that she’s soon humming the music and dancing away, much to the delight of her entire class!

Filled with gentle enthusiasm and a touch of whimsy, Suki’s Kimono is the joyful story of a little girl whose spirit leads her to march — and dance — to her own drumbeat. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars An exuberant story
Suki's Kimono is the heartwarming picture book story by Chieri Uegaki of Suki, a young girl determined to wear her favorite blue cotton kimono to school because it is a cherished gift from her beloved grandmother. Suki's friend warns her that it seems weird, but young Suki is determined to follow her own heart. A delightful tale Suki's Kimono is an exuberant story which is wonderfully enhanced for young readers with the brightly colored illustrations of Stephane Jorisch.

5-0 out of 5 stars Go, Suki!
This charming story is one that every child should read (or have read to them!). Not only does it have an encouraging message and introduce aspects of Japanese culture; it's also VERY beautifully illustrated, and Chieri Uegaki's writing is a pleasure to read. I love the way she phrases things, like when Suki sits close to the taiko drummers and feels "like she'd swallowed a ball of thunder and her whole insides quaked and quivered." Buy this book -- you won't be disappointed. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars First Day Blues
Little Cliff is reluctant to go to school. He thinks that because he is starting school, he will have too many responsibilities and not be able to enjoy his childhood any longer. As the day draws near, he begins to make excuses as to why he cannot go to school. His great-grandmother decides to walk him to school and upon arrival, he sees all of his friends playing. Little Cliff finally sees that school is not bad and can actually be a place not only to have fun but also to learn.

The beautiful illustrations add a rural "down home" feel to the book. I highly recommend this book for any child about to start school or any child having "first day jitters". The book does an excellent job of not trivializing the fears and apprehensions young children have about beginning school and does a wonderful job showing that school can be a fun place.

4-0 out of 5 stars Realistic dialogue and watercolors
Little Cliff does not want to go to school; he enjoys being with his great-grandparents and living with them along the Mississippi delta. He also feels he will miss his playtime activities, including climbing trees. Upset, Cliff tries to hide, but his great-grandmother discovers him and takes him to school. When Cliff sees other children his age playing baseball at school, he realizes he can have fun and learn at the same time.

Realistic dialogue and watercolors combine to form a picture of Cliff and his surroundings. Taulbert's text will require parents to read along with their children, as it is lengthy. Children, however, will identify immediately with Lewis' paintings. His use of shading and true-to-life proportions gives the illustrations a sense of purpose that children will recognize right away. While the story is good, it is ultimately Lewis' expressive and lifelike artwork that makes this book a recommendation for any library collection.

4-0 out of 5 stars School Is A New Adventure
As I read Little Cliff's First Day of School I recalled my brother's first day in kindergarten when he hugged the tree outside the classroom for dear life and my mother had tears in her eyes. His kindly teacher took him by the hand and asked my mother to leave. This was the beginning of Jim's educational journey. Cliff like most children is fearful of change and what are new adventures. His supportive family consisting of older "grandparents" provided the meger items he needs for school. Finally after stalling around Cliff enters the school grounds. He is welcomed by his friends and rethinks his fears..school is work...work...work to school is a fun place after all. The setting of the South in the 50's is easily translated to present day children. Many children come from families like Cliff's and they also experience poverty. I plan to share this book as our Book of the Month for a school with 770 students in grades kindergarten through 8th grade. ... Read more

When it comes to picking a hero for a children’s book, you can never go wrong with mice. From Mickey to Maisy to just about every Kevin Henkes book ever made, plucky rodents have made for incredibly popular protagonists. To that proud tradition comes the simply-named Mouse of Mouse’s First Day of School. After stowing away in a backpack, Mouse discovers all the wonders waiting at what appears to be a preschool or kindergarten. As Mouse explores each new station (blocks, books, pots and pans, plants, and more) with wonder and enthusiasm, author Lauren Thompson includes catchy phrases that kids will love repeating out loud. "Squiggle, scribble, dot crayons!" reads one page. "Feathery, floppy, boppy hats!" reads another. Buket Erdogan’s bright and simple pastel illustrations on textured backgrounds feature a happy Mouse having a great time encountering objects that kids recognize from their home, day care, or school. Book Description

It's just ten days before kindergarten, and this little girl has heard all there is to know--from a first grader--about what it's going to be like. You can't bring your cat, you can't bring a stuffed animal, and the number one rule? You can't ask anyone for help. Ever. So what do you do when your shoes come untied, if you're the only one in the class who doesn't know how to tie them up again?
Told with gentle humor by Alison McGhee and brought to exuberant life by New Yorker cartoonist Harry Bliss, this lighthearted take on pre-kindergarten anxiety will bring a smile to the face of every child--and parent--having first-day jitters.

5-0 out of 5 stars enjoyable for kids and adults
Other reviewers have discussed the content of the book, so I won't go into more detail on the storyline, but what I like best about the book is the ending: once the little girl actually gets to school, she and her classmates realize after conferring together that none of them know how to tie their shoes and that it's OKAY. Or, on a greater scale, you can think of it as a child's fear of feeling inadequate or behind his/her peers dissolving when he/she realizes that others are having the same troubles and fears. I think the book, besides being quite funny (she really is creative in trying to "lose" her shoelaces) shows that it's perfectly normal to be nervous about new situations, and if you are nervous you're not the only one. The comradery that develops between the kids in the class is really priceless: you mean YOU don't know how to tie your shoes EITHER?? :)

5-0 out of 5 stars Fun!
School is approaching and kids are getting nervous? Who will be my teacher? Who will I sit next to? Will I be able to bring my stuffed animal? This book deals with these questions and a lot more and does so with a great deal of humor. The illustrations are wonderful and the book is well written. I couldn't recommend a better book for kids about to go back to school. Buy it, your kids will love it. And if you're looking for other titles for your kids or teenagers don't miss: The Little Prince (Saint Exupery); The Butterfly (Jay Singh) and; (for you!) The Alchemist (Coelho).

1-0 out of 5 stars Created Fears in my Happy Camper
I got this book to help my 5-year-old son transition to kindergarten. It was a mistake! The book starts out with a little girl saying that she is in big trouble because kindergarten starts in 10 days (and she doesn't know how to tie her shoes). Each turn of the page is one day closer to kindergarten and the little girl grows more and more concerned because she is convinced that no one will help her at school (because it is against the rules).

I did my best to explain to my son that the book was supposed to be funny and that there was nothing to worry about... The next day he broke into spontaneous crying (very unusual for my normally cheerful, confident little guy) because he didn't know how to tie his shoes. He thought the teachers were going to be mean and maybe he wasn't ready for kindergarten after all. Oh boy!

Instead of this book, take a look at "Miss Bindergarten gets ready for Kindergarten." It is a much sweeter book about how a teacher gets the classroom ready with bright colors, games, blocks, puzzles, and special treats for the kids. The fact that it is also an alphabet book is a bonus.

5-0 out of 5 stars wonderful
By no means am I an expert on children's book, but this is one I would gladly read to my children (if I had any). This was a fun book to read and is assuredly a fun book for children to read. The book follows a young girl getting ready for kindergarten. She does not know how to tie her own shoes, and as everybody knows, the number one rule of kindergarten is that you must know how to tie your own shoes and you can't ask anyone. Ever. The illustrations in this book are perfect as the little girl addresses the reader directly. This should engage any children reading the book. Even better, the book uses humor to tell the story as the little girl tries to learn and get out of learning how to tie her own shoes.

This is a fun book and is perfect for children

5-0 out of 5 stars Countdown To Kindergarten
This text deals with the fears an incoming Kindergarten student has about a skill she hasn't yet developed. As a preschool teacher, I use this to open a discussion about what my students are anticipating when they begin Kindergarten. It uses humor to open a dialogue about a big step in a little person's life. The large bright illustrations are inviting and gives ample opportunity for prediction. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Explores sibling jealousy in a unique way
Here's a book about the first day of school that doesn't have the main character dreading her first day of school. On the contrary, Sarah is excited at the thought of making new friends.

But not everyone in the household is as happy for Sarah. In fact, Ralph, Sarah's rotten red cat, is doing everything he can to sabotage her school day: he sets back her clock, draws all over her new school dress and tries to trick her into staying home by faking an illness.

When Ralph gets the bright idea to follow Sarah to school, his antics get her in trouble and keep her from making new friends. Fans of Rotten Ralph--this is the ninth book in the series--know that all's well that ends well, but first-time readers may be a bit put off by Ralph, who seems just a tad too mean.

Rubel's chunky illustrations are colorful and bold. Her rendering of Ralph captures his true spirit right on the money...he's bright red with pointy ears and a devilish grin.

Gantos' book would be a good way to explore the jealousy that younger siblings might feel when an older brother or sister gets to try a new and exciting experience that they don't. Younger children might not recognize themselves in Rotten Ralph and his outrageous tactics, but I'm betting that parents will. ... Read more

This book is wonderfully written and illustrated. My two-year-old daughter wants to read it again and again. I definitely think it helps prepare children for nursery school. My 3 year-old loved this book. We read it to her just before starting preschool. She sat intently while I read the book to her. 5-0 out of 5 stars Very Funnyfrom Patrick age 8
I think this is a funny book. The aliens fly around in cups and have tenacles and all sorts of alien stuff that makes it fun to read. It's funny that they are aliens going to school.I hope she writes a Second Graders from Mars. And then Third Graders from Mars.

5-0 out of 5 stars First Grade, Martian Style.....
Horus couldn't wait to get to his first grade class in Pod 1. But once there, he was confused. Where was the slime table and the snooze mats and what time was snack? "First graders are too big for those things," another student informs him and Horus realizes he's not in martiangarten anymore. First grade is work, work, work, from reading to art to math problems and Horus is hungry and tired and cranky when his mother picks him up from school. How was your first day, she wants to know. "Horrible. I'm not going back!" Unfortunately, he finds out that this decision is out of his hands (or in his case tentacles), when his folks literally drag him back to school the next morning. There he finds a new little alien crying big blue tears. She's afraid school will be terrible, Horus agrees and scary, no argument there, and the teacher will be mean and the work too hard. But as Horus remembers his first day he tells her, the teacher was very nice and helpful and the work is hard, but not too hard, you can do it. Horus has a new friend, a friend who feels just like he did yesterday and needs him to help show her the ropes. So together they march inside, ready for whatever comes their way..... Shana Corey has written a delightful and humorous story that many first graders will relate to. Her simple and realistic text, complete with silly Martian language, really captures the essence of a little one moving from the safe world of kindergarten to the big unknown of first grade and is complemented by Mark Teaque's funny, expressive, colorful artwork. Together they've authored a charming story with a gentle, reassuring message that won't be lost on young readers. Perfect for kids 5-8, First Graders From Mars is just right for beginning readers and also makes a wonderful read aloud story the entire family can enjoy.

5-0 out of 5 stars Good, Wholesome, Martian Fun!!! and WEIRD!
First Graders From Mars is a super book for kids ages 4-8. It will become a staple for parents sending kids off to first grade and for first grade teachers welcoming Kindergarten graduates for the first time (Martiangarten Grads too!).Horus is a character who kids will quickly fall for...he's a kid through an through!Corey has crafted a fast-paced, easy-to-read story that gels!! It has lots of cool stuff (from a Martian girl who cries big blue tear drops out of her NOSE to a teacher who floats, has eyes in the back of her head, front, and SIDE!!!). Teague is a master and has brought the story to alien-life with bright, bold, alive illustrations. Watch this series ZOOOOOM up the bestseller lists!! Wow!!!! :) ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Helps Transition Kids from Home to School
Really well done. My little one was pretty apprehensive about starting kindegarten this year, so I searched Amazon for something to help make the transition from home to school a little easier. This book addressed all of her major concerns: What is a teacher like? What will the other kids be like? What do they do in school? When do we eat? And who do we eat with?

The discussion for parents at the back of the book assists adults in identifying and addressing our kids' concerns.

Really helpful. Well written and beautifully illustrated. I'd recommend it to any parent with kids just starting school.

5-0 out of 5 stars Preschool prep
"Don't Go!", written and illustrated by Jane Breskin Zalben, is a charming picture book for younger readers. It tells the story of Daniel, a little boy who is experiencing his first day at preschool. Daniel and his family are all elephant-headed humanoids; the other kids in his class include a hippo, a pig, a cat, etc. This device is nicely used and gives the largely realistic book an appealing touch of fantasy.

The friendly illustrations have bright colors. The book ends with a note from book editor Michele Coppola; she offers parents some tips for their child's first day at preschool. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Sweet Story!
I checked this book out from the library to read to my four-year-old daughter. We liked it so much we want a copy of our own. This is a story that rings true with my emotions as I recall my own childhood fears. Vera looks forward with eagerness to her first day of school, then becomes fearful when she approaches the schoolyard and finds it full of children. Children everywhere will identify with her sorrow when the day doesn't go as planned, and will also feel relief when everything turns out all right in the end.

5-0 out of 5 stars The first day of school is SO EXCITING!
Almost all children wait and wait and wait until THEY are old enough to go to school. This is grown-up stuff, they think. Those feelings, though, can become overwhelmed by realizing that perhaps, just perhaps, they are not the most grown-up person at the school.

This story helps children and parents alike to understand the feelings, perceptions, and realities of the first day of school. ... Read more

Like Hest's other books, this is a crowd pleaser. I just got done using this in our first August storytime and it was very well received by the 3s-6s. I heard lots of giggles because some of the dialogue is so dead-on accurate. I recommend this to all those parents with a tentative child about to enter the halls of learning. ... Read more
