Book Description

Lizzie's first day at Morningside Elementary is not off to a good start. Already she's been given a terrible nickname Lizard. Worse, she has to sit between the bratty Brady Brootski and Ivana the Terrible, whose wild hair and tough demeanor have earned her the reputation of being the scariest girl in the third grade. But she has been nice to Lizzie. Could she be best friend material? ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars BEST BOOK EVER!!!!!!
Hey! This is the greatest book! I HIGHLY suggest it! It is great for kids that are starting a new school or just a leisurely book!
It taught me to give everbody a chance!!!

4-0 out of 5 stars A fun read
Shy Lizzie (called Lizard by the class bully) has trouble adjusting to her new school. The popular kids like her, but she doesn't especially like them. She is terrified of Ivana with her wild hair and outspoken ways, but after the two of them become journal buddies she starts to like her. Now she has a problem. If she hangs out with the class outcast, will the other kids still like her? This book is both funny and touching. My only quibble is that I wish the illustrator had included a picture of Lizzie's bad hair day. ... Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars enjoyable pictures, but analogy will be lost on most kids
My sons enjoyed the pictures in this book, and were mildly interested in Billy starting school, but they totally didn't get the extended analogy about the lost sparrow working its way back to health and happiness, and Billy getting comfortable with going to school. I would have liked more details actually about school, and how Billy adjusted. However, the cute little detailed pictures of both school and birds were a lot of fun to study! If you have a child that loves birds, this might be a good choice, but I would not look to it for much help in transitioning to school. ... Read more

Wearing his brand-new, mom-made sunsuit, Timothy is all set for thefirst day of school. It looks like nothing can spoil this exciting moment...until perfect Claude shows up in his jacket and tie.

"Hello!" said Timothy.
"Nobody wears a sunsuit on the first day of school," said Claude.
It's all downhill from here. Claude has all the right clothes, answers everyquestion correctly, and never has to eat lunch alone. Timothy is just aboutready to give up trying when he meets Violet, who is suffering from a similarcase of imperfection. Her problem is perfect Grace, who sings, dances, andcounts up to a thousand. Soon Timothy and Violet are falling over with thegiggles, and those first-day blues are fading fast.

Every school has a Claude or two, and less-than-perfect kids will be absolutelythrilled to read about Timothy's triumph over his initial insecurities. RosemaryWells, author-illustrator of scads of award-winning books (Bunny Cakes and Emily's First 100 Days ofSchool), has provided all-new illustrations for this edition of herclassic. The expressions on Timothy's face, as he goes from innocent hopefulnessto bewilderment to crushed dismay--and finally to hiccup-y joy--are trueperfection. (Ages 3 to 7) --Emilie Coulter ... 2-0 out of 5 stars I give the original 5 stars
I am not sure why this book was re-illustrated and re-written. The writing revisions are not too bad, but the illustrations are not at all in the same league as in the original. They are big, bright and colorful. Perhaps they make the book a more successful read-aloud. If I had come across this book without having seen Wells' original, I'd have given it a higher rating. I'd have really loved it. But when you've already had the best nothing else will do.

5-0 out of 5 stars My son absolutely loves this book!
This is currently #1 on my son's reading list. He could listen to this 20 times a day. I think he likes the fact that it's realistic---there are kids out there like Claude, that really make kids like Timothy not enjoy school as they otherwise would, but then Timothy is able to find a way to overcome his sadness. The pictures are wonderfully expressive. A real gem of a book.

5-0 out of 5 stars I LAUGHED OUT LOUD AND REMEMBERED MY FIRST DAYS IN SCHOOL
so vividly it was scary. This book nails the feelings kids go through so perfectly I strongly recommend it to anyone with kids. A great read for the adults as much as for the kids. The artwork is perfect and funny too. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Informative and cute
This book describes how to prepare your kangaroo for the daily routine of going to school. It explains that a kangaroo should be dressed cleanly and neatly, be careful when crossing the streets, sit quietly on the bus, and follow the rules in school. In a humorous fashion, the book answers a lot of questions that curious readers may have about what school may be like. It has about 425 words.

5-0 out of 5 stars Avoid school daze with excited kangaroo school ways!
In this delightful little book a young child has the opportunity to learn what to expect on the first day of school. The book encourages question asking and answering, encourages activities that can be done during the reading and allows a child to glean useful tidbits about preparing for school and what might happen once there.

Manners discussed include crossing the street, riding on the bus and listening to the teacher. Other discussions include how to find the class and desk, what might be learned, how some things might be easy while others might take more time, recess and playtime, lunch, bathroom breaks and more!

BEAUTIFULLY illustrated with an appealing and expressive kangaroo. I would say this is a must for any young child getting ready for their first school experience.

5-0 out of 5 stars The perfect book for children starting school.
Author, Sonia Levitin, & illustrator, Jeff Seaver, have collaborated again on this second book in what I hope will be an ongoing etiquette series for young children. When Kangaroo Goes To School is a delightful story of a kangaroo's preparations and expectations for his first day at school..."do you know the rules?", "What about show and tell?", "Where will we eat?" and so on. Kangaroo will steal your heart and share the rules of "school etiquette" with your children. ... Read more

Book Description

Dexter is ready for kindergarten. Sort of. Well, actually, he's maybe kind of a little bit scared, perhaps even terrified, one might say. Because what if he gets lost? Or, what if the teacher is mean? Or, he misses his mom or dad? Or, worst of all, he loses his most important ally, Rufus?

With the same warmth, exuberance, and sly wit that have made her a favorite of booksellers and children, Katie Davis tackles a problem every kid--and parent--has to face sooner or later: first-day fears. And she shows that it's okay to be scared, but that, as Dexter's older sister Jessie says, "Kindergarten rocks!"

Book Description

It's the first day of school at Yappy Puppy Play School and Haybillybun is not so sure he wants to go. What if the other kids make fun of his fluffy feet? Or his long name? Can't his mother go in his place and he'll stay at home?

But when he gets to school, Haybillybun discovers that everyone has a long name and he decides he'll stay after all. His mother returns home alone and finds she's missing her little boy more than she ever thought she would. Is he all right?

How Haybillybun and his mother each experience the first day of school is the heart of Joan Rankin's warm and funny story, just right for little ones and their parents, who all must face their own first days sooner or later. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Who's Ready for the First Day of School.....
It's Haybillybun's very first day at Yappy Puppy Play School, and this fluffy little canine isn't so sure he wants to go. He's afraid that his "slip-slidey-fluffy feet" will keep him from running fast or make him fall off the jungle gym, or that he won't be able to hear the teacher with his "horrible fuzzy ears." He worries that no one will want to play with him, and that his eyes are scary, and his name's too long. But Mom and Dad have a common-sense, comforting answer to all his concerns, and so off to school he goes. "Haybillybun stayed at school, and his mother went home..." But after a couple of hours of household chores, Haybillybun's mother begins to become anxious, puts on her hat and rushes back to school to "rescue her darling boy." As she peeks over the fence and into the classroom, she finds that Haybillybun is having the time of his life, playing and painting and making new friends..... Joan Rankin really captures the first day jitters of both parents and kids, in this gentle and reassuring picture book. Her cheerful and energetic text begs to be read aloud, and is filled with silly names and humorous dialogue. Bold, bright, and busy illustrations enhance the story with engaging details, and little ones will enjoy lingering over each picture before turning the page. Perfect for preschoolers getting ready for their own big, first day of school, First Day is a fun and heartwarming story that shouldn't be missed. ... Read more

Book Description

It is the first day at Mulberry School and everything is going wrong for one shy little pig. Embarrassed and upset by the morning's mishaps, he decides he would rather hide under the mulberry bush than play with the other children. Luckily, he soon makes the wonderful discovery that a friend can turn up in the most unlikely place. . . .
Bringing the same imaginative brilliance to this traditional song that made his Down by the Station a success, Will Hillenbrand has created a reassuring book for anyone who starts school with first-day jitters.
Also features the music and lyrics for the popular nursery song.

5-0 out of 5 stars Educators Recommend
In this rhythmic, rhyming tale-set to the tune of "Here We Go Round the Mulberry Bush"-it is the first day of school and little pig is scared. Although he tries building a tower and playing at the water table, he can't quite get the hang of it and ends up making messes.

When the other pigs go outside to play tag, he hides inside a mulberry bush. There he finds another little pig hiding also. The two become fast friends, making the last half of the day more enjoyable than the first. By story's end, little pig declares, "My first day has made me one happy guy."

Hillenbrand's cartoon-like, mixed media illustrations capture perfectly the initial scariness of school from the little pig's perspective as well as the excitement and fun as the day progresses.

The bright, colorful spreads are filled with action and humorous touches.

An excellent choice for a reassuring, first-day read aloud.

4-0 out of 5 stars Good Lesson for New Students
No elaborate illustrations. No fancy words. Just colorful drawings and large, easy-to-read text simply told from a child's point of view. This sturdy board book is perfectly sized for small hands. Kevin Goes to School is a big hit in my house. My favorite part shows Kevin shouting "No Mom, wait! Don't go yet!" It reminds me of the time my daughter gripped my own leg during her first week of day care. I recommend this book if your own child is starting school or day care. It could help make the transition less traumatic. The vocabulary is fairly simple, so it can also be used as an early reader book for your child who is just learning to read. ... Read more
