Book Description

The first day of school means new shoes, fresh crayons, and a fancy lunch box. It also means leaving Mom and Dad behind, a notion that's likely to rattle even the most eager new student--and this little girl is no exception. Her classroom seems overwhelming, and the older kids are awfully big. But she soon realizes that a friendly teacher and some new pals can help even the most reticent student move past the jitters and into the fun!
Perfect for any child starting school, Dandi Daley Mackall's simple rhyming text and Tiphanie Beeke's cheerful illustrations will reassure children--and parents--who are nervous about a first day.

5-0 out of 5 stars Educators Recommend
The narrator in First Day tells of her first-day jitters in simple, rhyming sentences. 'Swirls of girls, / bands of boys, / talking, laughing, making noise. / I already miss my toys. / It's only my first day.'

Once in the classroom she plans her getaway (digging to China with a spoon, or taking a rocket to the moon). 'I'd be outta here by noon,' she posits. But, like most children on their first day, the narrator finds that school is not quite as bad as she imagined it to be. Coloring sheets with teddy bears, building tall towers, a new lunch box, and recess all combine to make the day enjoyable. By story's end she asks, 'How much better can it get on my second day?'

Accompanying the large-print text are watercolor and acrylic illustrations. Done in somewhat muted, warm colors, the childlike paintings are full of realistic details and smiling faces, giving the book a comforting, friendly feel.

This is a great choice for a first-day-of-school read aloud.

5-0 out of 5 stars Hey kids! Do not confuse "S" with "s" or Sabrina with Sabina
Please pay attention to the name of the little girl in "Sabina at School and the Letter S" because if you glance at the title you will think that her name is "Sabrina" and it is not, it is "Sabina." Okay? This volume in the "Alphabet Friends" series by Cynthia Klingle and Robert B. Noyed is devoted to helping beginning readers master recognition of the letter "S." "Sabina at School and the Letter S" is actually about Sabina's first day at school, and situation a lot of beginning readers will be able to relate to quite easily. Through the book most of the words beginning with the letter "S" in the simple text are highlighted, with rebus drawings appearing above them. The ultimate goal is for beginning readers to get to the point where they can read these books for themselves.

The first thing young readers learn is the difference between the capital letter "S" and the lowercase letter "s" (which is really not that much of a difference except for size) as well as how the letter can come at the beginning of a word like "starfish," in the middle of a word like "newspaper," and at the end of a word like "grass." You will find columns reflecting these three categories in the back of the book which list all of the words with "s" that appear in the book, along with Fun Facts about the sea and starfish, as well as suggestions for books about each of those three appropriate for the beginning reader. Because not all of the words that begin with the letter "s" are highlighted, young readers will have plenty of opportunities to find more examples of the magic letter on their own as they work on reading this book on their own (only seven more "Alphabet Friends" to go). ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Great! May be the best kids book series!
We've got all but one of the "It's OK!" books and every time I reread one (which is often - our son loves the books!) I'm more impressed. Tom and Ally seem real because of their insecurities, and seeing them go through nerve-racking situations helps our kids prepare for the real thing in life.
The art is great as well!
I wished the team that made these books would produce some more.
I just got the School book four days ago and our son (2 years, 10 months) has wanted it read to him every night since then. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Imagination and color permeate this fine picture book
The author and illustrator of "22 orphans" return to create a wonderful tale of imagination and color. Davy's mother sends him off to his first day of school. Aware of school bullies, Davy decides to construct his own school with whatever he can find - wood planks, wheels, and so on. Davy's "school" eventually rolls down a hill to the real school, where the other children learn of his adventure and create their own school on wheels.

Veldkamp has crafted a tale sure to delight young children who are new to school. The illustrations of Hopman augment the tale; his use of curved lines and finely detailed color enhance the story line, making it all the more exciting. The hues vary throughout the story, giving it a decidedly European setting. Bound to be a favorite in any public library collection. ... Read more
