5-0 out of 5 stars Adorable Swimmy Rhyme
This is an adorable picture book. The rhyme is skillfully written to hold the attention of the most wiggly of small children. They'll swim under the water meeting all kinds of sea creatures and be surprised at the end. The art, inspired by the text is fun and colorful. The illustrator nailed it! Children will read this over and over. Jan Peck has now, another excellent picturebook to her credit.

5-0 out of 5 stars Way down deep fun!
As in her previous picture book, The Giant Carrot, Jan Peck has created a fun and lively story with carefully chosen words to entice children to read and re-read this delightful adventure story. Full of fun sea creatures and lyrical language, Way Down Deep is stimulating both in listening to the story and the enjoyment of the bright illustrations. Well-done and worth owning!

5-0 out of 5 stars Way Down Deep is Oceans of fun and learning for children!
I am a children's writer who wishes he had written this book! Jan Peck has surely been touched by the hand of God. "The Giant Carrot" was a classic Ms. Peck created, but "Way Down Deep in the Deep Blue Sea" will be read by generations of children too. The tight musical writing and beautiful illustrations will please every child--plus teach them rhythm and the names of sea creatures. On top of all this, the book shows the child the wonders of using his imagination. Buy your copy now, because the first edtion will become a collector's item. "Cat in the Hat" move over! ... 2-0 out of 5 stars disappointed
Big disappointment. The illustrations are very poor. Nothing like the computer animated graphics in the movie. The characters look like the impressionists version of those in the movie. Bruce the shark is practically unrecognizable, neither is Nemo or Dory. The story is ok, too complicated for a younger child to follow.

1-0 out of 5 stars Big disappointment
Received this book as a gift for our 4-year old son. He hasn't seen the movie (maybe that makes a difference?), but he loves the pictures and the character. Our friend thought she was buying a quality product from Disney, and so did we, until we tried to read it. I am so disappointed! The movie may be better, but this book gives the impression that a couple of people spent half a weekend pasting together a few shots from the movie, then wrote a little descriptive text and called it a day. There are 2 major faults: 1) several scenes from the movie were obviously just described in the book. They make no sense within the plot, they are literally BORING, though the animated scene may have been appropriate. They are too short to build up any sort of suspense, climax, etc.. An example is the jellyfish scene. 2) The story jumps around, from scene to scene. This distracts and confuses my 4-year old, who is used to logical sequences, a beginning, middle and end in his other books. Sorry, Disney, this book is a loser...

2-0 out of 5 stars Looks nothing like the motion picture.
Saw it on the bookshelf, grabbed it to buy it for my son who really liked the movie, opened it, returned it to the shelf. You don't buy a book like that for the story -- you buy it for the story and the pictures -- it's a book for younger children after all -- and you hope that the pictures will bring back the fond memories of seeing the story on big screen. But this book is so modestly illustrated that it seems totally unrelated to the film. Even the characters look different. All excitement and all that underwater magic are gone. 'Toy Story' -- from the same series of Disney books -- is illustrated much better. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent Resource to Help Teach Comparatives/Superlatives
"Blue Sea" is a delightful book to help the beginner/elementary reader learn simple comparative and superlative adjectives. "Small," "Smaller," "Smallest," and "Big," "Bigger," "Biggest" are mentioned in this 21 page story which averages about 3-4 words per page. The text is large, and the visuals are simple, colorful, and uncluttered.

5-0 out of 5 stars children learn a variety of concepts while having fun
I work with small children as a speech therapist and have found that this book teaches many different concepts in only a few pages. The little ones request it over and over again, even those who cannot yet ask verbally. The text is crisp and concise, and the pictures invite children to offer comments throughout the book. It is possible to read this book over and over and discuss many different concepts while having a lot of fun. I am on my way to wearing out my second copy. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars "I want to read the ocean!"
I've been hearing this every night for weeks. I read this to my daughter and she loves it. We even look for the three starfish in each set of pages. She knows many fish, but some were new to her. This is one book I don't mind reading over and over.

4-0 out of 5 stars Underwater romp for the small fry...
Fast, fun & colorful poems about the ocean animals for the pre-school set. Very simple, so if your child knows a lot about marine animals you may want something more detailed.

5-0 out of 5 stars Commotion in the Ocean
This is an excellent and delightful book! What a pleasure to read about ocean creatures instead of the usual farm animals. By age 3, my nephew could identify and chat about all the ocean going creatures in this book. It is one of his favorites. The pictures are beautiful and very colorful. I can't say enough great things about this book!

5-0 out of 5 stars Perfect for an ocean theme!
This book is an adorable addition to anyone's book collection. A different ocean animal is featured on each page. Along with the picture is a short poem about the animal. Children love the pictures and the rhyming text. Also check out Rumble in the Jungle by Giles Andreae. It has the same type of text and illustrations but involves jungle animals.

Note to teachers: I use this with my ocean unit. Your students will ask you to read this over and over again. Trust me!

5-0 out of 5 stars I can't believe I found it.
I'm 35 years old and this was my favorite book as a child. I've looked high and low thinking that it was a Crockett Johnson book, because of the unique drawings. Turns out, he only illustrated it.

This is an easy read for beginning readers and a great story-time book for the younger ones. What a great time we live in that a person can go on a computer and find several copies of a book that was last printed in 1969. It would've taken me years to find it in book stores. Thank you Amazon.

4-0 out of 5 stars Great for adults too, especially if you retire early!!
I am 29 years old and read this book when I was a child...I am building my own internet business and plan to "escape" the employee world. When I retire early, I am going to give a copy to my employer as if to say....."the little fish that got away...."

5-0 out of 5 stars An excellent beginner book!

5-0 out of 5 stars A big hit with bright colors
My 20 month old boy/girl twins LOVE this book. My son has adopted this book as his own and reads it over and over again. We have ordered this book twice and it is on his wish list for Christmas, because, it is not that durable, but still worth it! It is loved so much we buy it for other little people.

5-0 out of 5 stars Love This Book!
This is my son's (9 months) favorite book - he has loved it since 3 months of age. He loves the colors and will sit still through the entire book. In a little while we'll use it to introduce counting. Since he has pretty much eaten his first copy, I'm currently online to order copy number 2. My only suggestion to the publisher - please make this in a board book format as well! :-)

5-0 out of 5 stars Start early!
We love this book! Our son is only 2 months old and as a teacher, I know the importance of reading from the beginning. We read this book to our baby & he loves it. He loves to listen to our voices w/ the different inflections and the bright, colorful pictures are great- he really stares & smiles. I know we will continue to use this book as he grows, with the cute rhymes and the counting practice (even addition: "one fish plus me makes two!"). I will give this book as a baby gift from now on.

3-0 out of 5 stars Warning! Grammatical error within!
I ordered this book based on the excellent reviews, and indeed, my 9-month-old daughter loved the pictures (which are gorgeous). But I was so disappointed to find a grammatical error--and you have to rewrite the final rhyme yourself to get rid of it. OK, granted, so i'm a big word nerd. (I graduated from Harvard magna cum laude in English.) Most people won't even notice. And I'd have no problem if the book used non-standard grammar as an artistic choice (as in More More More, Said the Baby, a truly lovely book.) But this is just a lame mistake, and I'd prefer to keep this kind of sloppiness away from my daughter. Go ahead, call me a geek.

5-0 out of 5 stars Definitely a keeper!
Come on a journey deep at sea, to count the many fish we'll see...

I have an affinity for well-written children's books, so when I first read Fish Eyes I was immediately taken by the prose, and the artwork. Years later, after William was born, I realized how intriguing vivid colors were to babies. I started reading to him when he was only a few days old, and every time I picked up THIS book, he was mesmerized. Maybe it was the melodic phrasing, but I think it was the illustrations more than anything.

Fish Eyes is primarily a numbers and counting book that is geared to the very young, 0 to 3 years. This book counts up to 10. In the counting section, the eyes on the fish are punched-out, leaving holes. Children can count fish, or fish eyes. It's an ingenious way of educating kids by interactive means. In addition, there are simple arithmetic lessons cleverly hidden in the sea for older children. In the corner of each spread is a small fish that appears as a shadow. The fish poses a questions like, "3 smiling fish, plus me make 4". Only older children are apt to notice such minutiae, or I should say, they understand it at least. That's why Fish Eyes is so brilliant.

The vibrant colors engaged my son so, that we would study each page after reading the text. Once he was able to hold the book, the die-cut eyes lured him to touch. For a long while, Fish Eyes was one of Will's favorite books. As a result, it has become one of my standard baby gifts. Will is 2½ now, and he knows his numbers, probably in part because of this book. Once he gets around to learning arithmetic, Fish Eyes will surely be one we'll take off the shelf again, and again. ... you won't be sorry!

Happy Reading,
Mary ... Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars Facinating Underwater Photographs, Unremarkable Text
The creator of this book is a marine biologist, and the colorful overlays of his underwater photographs are so interesting, they make the text's general lack of flow (hence, the three star rating) seem less important. Both rare and more familiar fish are showcased, and notes in the back of the book identify them all. Some of the more fierce-looking fish presented are so intense they might be scary to sensitive younger readers, but they were not so for my two-year-old, who really liked puring over all the pages of this book. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars . . .
I bought this book expecting one of those 'Making of . . .' creations, but ended up being pretty disappointed. Don't get me wrong, this guide is very informative, amusing and candy for the eyes . . . but for children. Or, for adults with inner children. Seeing as I'm a cynical teenager, it didn't do much for me :)

5-0 out of 5 stars Love this book.........
This book is really cool and it gave me a lot of information on Finding Nemo that I didn't know about before.
But I did see a couple of errors in the book.
But the only errors were length and stuff like that....so it really doesn't matter that much.
Besides that the book gives you information on just about everyone in the movie and information on the type of fish that the characters are, like I never knew that Dory and Bubbles were related, let me tell you how:
Dory is a Regal Tang.
Bubbles is a Yellow Tang. cool huh....?
Anyway, its a good book to read when you're bored or while you're watching the movie.
This book is auesome.
sincerly,
Kenny (jellyman)

5-0 out of 5 stars Awsome Book
I love this book. It reminds me of the movie, infact, Finding Nemo is my all time favorite movie. I found the moonfish pretty cool when we see them clearly instead of them doing their impressions. Finding Nemo is my favorite movie and this is one of my favorite books. I also like the clownfish joke. How do you make jellyfishes laugh? Give him ten tickles.

5-0 out of 5 stars A Swim Through the Sea
I am truly amazed at the talent of Kristen Joy Pratt. I think that her talent to supply children with useful information in a fun way is pure genius. Not only does this book give valuable information about the sea, it also shows the creatures in humorous settings. This book does a wonderful job describing the animals using word play. Learn about an amiable angelfish or a puffed-up porcupine! This book could be used for many grade levels. Small children could use this as an ABC concept book while older children could use this as an informational book to learn more about sea creatures. I loved the art work in her book. She begins by putting a picture of the continents on the front and back cover. From there it just gets better. She uses wonderful color and detail in her art to show the characters the story is talking about. As a teacher, this book works wonderful with a unit on the sea. This book is very resourceful and I recommend it to anyone who is interested in the sea or in wonderful illustrations. Not only will you be amazed that there is something for every letter in the alphabet, but you can read facts about different creatures that live in the world under water! ... Read more

Book Description

Combining rich historical detail and a harrowing, pulse-pounding narrative, Close to Shore brilliantly re-creates the summer of 1916, when a rogue Great White shark attacked swimmers along the New Jersey shore, triggering mass hysteria and launching the most extensive shark hunt in history.

During the summer before the United States entered World War I, when ocean swimming was just becoming popular and luxurious Jersey Shore resorts were thriving as a chic playland for an opulent yet still innocent era's new leisure class, Americans were abruptly introduced to the terror of sharks. In July 1916 a lone Great White left its usual deep-ocean habitat and headed in the direction of the New Jersey shoreline. There, near the towns of Beach Haven and Spring Lake-and, incredibly, a farming community eleven miles inland-the most ferocious and unpredictable of predators began a deadly rampage: the first shark attacks on swimmers in U.S. history.

For Americans celebrating an astoundingly prosperous epoch much like our own, fueled by the wizardry of revolutionary inventions, the arrival of this violent predator symbolized the limits of mankind's power against nature.

Interweaving a vivid portrait of the era and meticulously drawn characters with chilling accounts of the shark's five attacks and the frenzied hunt that ensued, Michael Capuzzo has created a nonfiction historical thriller with the texture of Ragtime and the tension of Jaws. From the unnerving inevitability of the first attack on the esteemed son of a prosperous Philadelphia physician to the spine-tingling moment when a farm boy swimming in Matawan Creek feels the sandpaper-like skin of the passing shark, Close to Shore is an undeniably gripping saga.

Heightening the drama are stories of the resulting panic in the citizenry, press and politicians, and of colorful personalities such as Herman Oelrichs, a flamboyant millionaire who made a bet that a shark was no match for a man (and set out to prove it); Museum of Natural History ichthyologist John Treadwell Nichols, faced with the challenge of stopping a mythic sea creature about which little was known; and, most memorable, the rogue Great White itself moving through a world that couldn't conceive of either its destructive power or its moral right to destroy.

Scrupulously researched and superbly written, Close to Shore brings to life a breathtaking, pivotal moment in American history. Masterfully written and suffused with fascinating period detail and insights into the science and behavior of sharks, Close to Shore recounts a breathtaking, pivotal moment in American history with startling immediacy.

5-0 out of 5 stars JAWES Inspiring!
Michael Capuzzo has done a spectacular job of writing a truly entertaining as well as informative account of the 1916 New Jersey series of shark attacks. These attacks were used by author Peter Benchley to base his bestseller "Jaws" from. While a fan of both Jaws the book and movie both pale in comparison to Capuzzo's real-life account, this is honestly one of the best books I've read in quite some time. As for the other reviewers who complained about the "detail" used in the book these are obviously readers who were looking for strict blood, guts and schlock...for that type of reading stick to the tabloids, for an honest page-turning good read buy this book!

4-0 out of 5 stars Interesting book proving truth is stranger than fiction
This book chronicles a spate of deadly shark attacks on the East Coast back in 1916. The attacks sparked such a panic that for a time the news of the killer shark pushed World War I off the front pages of US newspapers. The author does an admirable job of detailing the background of the area and the bloody events that left such an imprint on those who lived during the time. Once again, truth is stranger than fiction for who would have written a fictional book with a shark traveling up a creek and killing a young boy and man? This actually happened in 1916 wave of terror.

Read and beware the water....

5-0 out of 5 stars FAR MORE RIVETING THAN JAWS
CLOSE TO SHORE provides a fascinating look at not only the first documented shark attacks in the history of the United States, it also provides a look at the culture of the Eastern Seaboard at the turn of the century. In a very wellwritten account, author Michael Capuzzo, recaps the beliefs of the day about open-sea swimming and sharks. He discusses the almost maniacal craze that possessed some to swim with sharks in order to prove that sharks were harmless and their own bizarre machismo.

Capuzzo also adds further flavor and perspective by discussing the norms of the day regarding swimming attire, the culture of New Jersey's nouveau riche, other news stories of the period and the limitations of the physicians of the day regarding the brutality of wounds inflicted by great white sharks.

Far more riveting than Benchley's JAWS, CLOSE TO SHORE brings the true account of July 1916 along the Jersey Shore where three adults and a boy were attacked and killed as helpless witnesses looked on in horror.

Capuzzo masterfully tells the morbid tale from not only the human perspective, but also, by using information and facts from modern shark experts, from the perspective of the shark and its instincts. The book switches back and forth from human to shark in a way that wonderfully builds the account and the real-life suspense of the events involved. In fact, CLOSE TO SHORE is a wonderful resource regarding sharks generally. Capuzzo's research seemed so complete that at times I felt like I was reading a biology primer on sharks.

CLOSE TO SHORE proves to be a compelling page turner that you just can't miss!

5-0 out of 5 stars First Rate Historical Read!!
Mr. Capuzzo's Close to Shore combines the natural history of the great white shark *and what went wrong in the case of this animal* with an overview of the social history of the US in 1916 into a non-fiction read that moves like a good novel. If you are looking for a sensational blood n' slash shark book, go somewhere else. If you are looking for a dry, historical account of the facts, go somewhere else. If you like your history text presented in an interesting and personal way then this is most definately the book for you. I can think of several history/natural history writers who could take a cue from Michael Capuzzo. I hope we see more from this author in the future!! I highly recommend the audio book as well. It is read by Len Cariou *if you know musical theatre then enough said!!* and is a great matching of vocal performer and material.

4-0 out of 5 stars Where's the Shark?
Yes, there is a rogue great white shark featured in this nonfiction account of an adolsescent great white that apparently went crazy and attacked bathers and swimmers off the East Coast during the summer of 1916, but you have to read a lot of padding in this book, long expository segments on man vs. nature, the industrial revolution, the drum beats of World War I, back stories of people who were directly and indirectly in contact with the shark. The writing is excellent, but the book seems at least twice as long as at it would have been had the author focused on the shark attacks. It seems so many books are in reality essays that literary agents and publishers inflate into books. If you don't want all the peripheral information, what I'm calling padding, you may be disappointed. In the end, though, I have to give the book four stars because the prose style is sharp and the author recreates the harrowing shark attack scenes with lucid clarity and suspense. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent!
I bought this book for my son because while I'm not fluent in Spanish (yet!), I wanted to expose him to the language. I also have the Rainbow Fish in English, so we switch off between the two. It's a wonderful story with an excellent lesson on sharing. And the illustrations are beautiful. It's certainly a classic.

5-0 out of 5 stars destined to become a classic children's book.
My 3 year old granddaughter never tires of hearing the story over and over of a selfish fish who learns how to give. The holograms thruout the book fascinate her. ... Read more
