Eye-opening detail of a day in the life of a young, male fox
This book was read to me by my seven year old (first grader) daughter.The book describes the basic daily existence of a young male fox.The story details how Fang begins his first winter in the Great Woods.Thestory includes details of fox relationships with other males and females,including marking their territory.Fang's attempt to hunt and capture foodis also covered.Fang is chased away by a male goose, and later, thedominant male fox.In the rush to escape, Fang is hit by a passing car. Eventually, Fang finds food (insects) and a warm place to rest and healwounds. While the story is graphic and educational, the material is a notstory every young child should hear/read.Also, the vocabulary used ismore advanced than the emergent reader level.So, many first and (somesecond) grade readers may need help with the comprehension aspect of thestory.Following the story, there is a section that identifies differentfoliage and animals featured in the story and asks readers to look forthem.And, there is also a "Things To Do" section for kids tohelp learn about wild birds (i.e., make several kinds of birdfeeders) plusa bibliography listing books and videos about foxes. The book Hunted is about a young girl (Karen) that sets out on the adventure of a lifetime while her body lies in a hospital bed. I found that Hunted tugged at all the emotions that could be felt. As I flew through the book I could feel just as she felt, so much that I would forget that I was reading it and just feel that I was in it. I felt it so much that I was there with her feeling the pain, agony, and utter instinct to survive. It was so good that I didn't want to put it down, but mysterious enough to always keep you wondering what the next page would bring.
