He and his friends, a bear, a muskrat, and a couple of catbirds, who also want the racket to stop, search high and low for the mystery peeper. 5-0 out of 5 stars A keeper!
This is the cutest book! It honestly warms my heart with it's simple story about animals harkening the coming of spring. The earnest possum rouses everyone around him to appreciate the beauty that surrounds them and welcome the changing of the seasons. 5-0 out of 5 stars Great message Great read
Finklehopper Frog has a terrific sense of style!
In a time in which my 2 and 4 year old girls are bombarded with images of princesses, its great to read about "real" characters with real feelings.
Finklehopper and his friend Ruby are willing to try the very things that frighten them. They take a risk that doesn't pay off in the usual sense (she loses the race) but pays off big in the lesson learned sense.

This is a really cute story with several terrific messsages! I love to read the witty, poetic lines outloud to my children.

My girls have replaced Barbie with a new favorite! ... Read more

Engagingly written and illustrated by Tammy Carter Bronson, Polliwog is a bilingual English/Spanish picture book for young readers about the remarkable transformation of a polliwog into her new, adult life as a frog. Scientific facts and soft-toned color illustrations fill this most enjoyable read, about an animal growing up and learning to adapt to a new environment, new challenges, and new foods. 3-0 out of 5 stars Hold on, the planet is going down the drain!
This is probably the most disappointing of the Commander Toad books, which my sons, ages 4 and 8, truly ENJOY and even beg for! It is a fun read, but not as outstanding as the other books in this series.

The crew receives a message from a planet inhabited only by doves. It turns out that their beans have swollen and clogged the storm sewer drains, causing the entire planet to flood. Very far-fetched, indeed.

The birds sent an SOS to Star Fleet when their wings grew tired from having no place to land. Mistaking their bird language, Commander Toad's crew brings a shipload of beans, which the birds don't really want. They just need dry ground on which to rest.

In the end, Commander Toad saves the day by swimming underwater to pierce the swollen beans with his official Star Fleet gadget. Then he must hold on to a statue of the Mayor while everything unattached goes down the drain! Swallow your disbelief!

The reason this book is not as good as the remainder of the series is because, in a few cases, the pictures don't mesh with the story. I.e. the text says Doc Peeper goes to the planet's surface, but the image doesn't show him in the sky skimmer. Also, the plot is even more oddball than usual.

Incredibly fun series of books. Try _Commander Toad and the Space Pirates_ or _Commander Toad and the Intergalactic Spy_. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars A Toad-ally Terrific Tale!¿
Award-winning author Jane Yolen offers few words (43 total) but plenty of suspense. Hoptoad and his traveling buddies, a skinny lizard and a deceptively speedy tortoise, must scamper across a wide highway to avoid a mammoth red pickup. ("Truck coming. Heavy load. Toad hop. Toad hop!") Karen Lee Schmidt's watercolors loom larger-than-life: reptile scales you can almost touch, dusty desert scenes that almost parch your throat. Ever wonder what the world looks like from a toad's bulging eyes? In a two-page spread you can almost feel Hoptoad's fear as humongous headlights bear down on his quivering body frozen mid-road. Will he make it across? Or will he be flattened into a toad tortilla? Get the book to find out! ... Read more

This book is a wonderful introduction to the rain forest and poison dart frogs for children. The story takes you through the life of a strawberry poison dart frog (my daughter Jessie's favorite frog) from egg to adult. The story is excellent and the pictures are fantastic! I have been to La Selva twice so I can say that the story and pictures are realistic. A picture quiz at the end of the book will keep your eyes open for other rain forest wildlife living in the pictures of this wonderful book. I instruct environmental education programs and use this book often. Enjoy! ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Self concensus at work
An email friend used the term "self consensus" to describe the process by which we start with a known person- ourselves- and move in small steps away from that to construct our image of another person we know via email. This book is a good illustration of that idea.

The story is about a minnow and a tadpole. They look alike, so they must be alike, right? The frog wakes up to having grown legs and the fish is astounded- this cannot be!They are both fish!Time goes on and the fish grows into a larger fish and the tadpole into a frog. Finally the frog is able to leave the pond, but eventually he returns to tell his old friend about the world. The fish pictures the birds as colorful fish with wings, the cow as a hilarious furry fish with horns and udders and the people as fish in clothing with hair. Of course the fish wants to see these amazing things so he jumps out, only to discover that he really needs to be in his cool, watery element to survive.

The illustrations are fairly simple colored pencil drawings- at least until we get to the creatures outside the pond. My children found the "birds" interesting, but the cow and the humans had them in stitches. They found those critters to be some of the funniest things they can imagine- and my 8 yo was able to understand and articulate that we base our assumptions on what we already know and understand.A pretty good lesson for kids to learn, IMO, as well as a sweet story of friendship between two very different creatures.

5-0 out of 5 stars Fish is Fish as Epistemological Primer
Fish Is Fish (Lionni, 1970) describes a fish who is keenly interested in learning about what happens on land, but the fish cannot explore land because it can only breathe in water. It befriends a tadpole who grows into a frog and eventually goes out onto the land. The frog returns to the pond a few weeks later and reports on what he has seen. The frog describes all kinds of things like birds, cows, and people. The book shows pictures of the fish's representations of each of these descriptions: each is a fish-like form that is slightly adapted to accommodate the frog's descriptions--people are imagined to be fish who walk on their tailfins, birds are fish with wings, cows are fish with udders. This tale illustrates both the creative opportunities and dangers inherent in the fact that people construct new knowledge based on their current knowledge.

5-0 out of 5 stars A Delightful Book
FISH IS FISH is a delightful book. It's fun for children, and a pleasure for adults to read out loud. The illustrations are beautiful. Two young "fish" are friends. One fish stays a fish; the other turns out to be a tadpole. The real fish refuses to believe that his friend is changing. How like real life! After tadpole goes up on land, he actually has more to add to their friendship - great stories about what he has seen on earth! When fish jumps onto land to explore, he almost dies.Tadpole saves him.In the end, both fish and tadpole are happy with their own unique worlds.Fish tells tadpole: "You were right ... Fish is fish."This story is so simply and wonderfully symbolic of how friends can remain friends, even when they change as they grow up.

5-0 out of 5 stars Beautoful and Subtle. I Love This Book!
This fanciful and colorful book is about a fish and tadpole who become friends while living in the same pond. Tadpole soon grows legs and leavesthe pond. Fish is lonely without him and tries to follow. Disaster! Thegently presented lessons in this book stir me still. The words are simple, but the meaning, real and multi-faceted, is accessible to all ages.

5-0 out of 5 stars Things are not always what they seem
The book's message--sometimes what is best for you is right before your eyes. This book teaches basic information about frogs and fish.It has beautiful colors which captivate the children's imagination and interest. Thoughtfully and creatively written, one of my favorite Leo Lionni books. This is a book which captivates the interest of chldren of all ages.Mypre-school age children love this book, as does the elementary age childrenin my classroom. ... Read more

Once, in the Dreamtime, the biggest frog in Australia woke up thirsty. So thirsty that he drinks up all the water from the oceans, lakes, rivers, billabongs, puddles, and even from the clouds. When he is done, the earth is parched, and the other animals are thirsty.

Wise old Wombat suggests that the animals try to make the biggest frog laugh, so the water will spill out of his mouth. But the frog barely hears Kookaburra's best jokes, and yawns at Kangaroo's acrobatics. Koala waddles ridiculously, but still no luck.

What will make the frog laugh and bring life back to Australia?

Find out in this colorful retelling of a classic Australian folktale. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars one of the all time favourites
My five-year old adores this book. It has great illustrations and an engaging story line about a monster hiding in the cave that turned out to be a tiny caterpillar. It is hillarious and involves child attention. After the first reading my son knows who is hiding in the cave and tries to reasure all the scared animals every time we read it. This book is a joy to read for both a parent and a child and has a great message that what we fear often turns out to be small issue.

5-0 out of 5 stars Age Appropriate Attention Holder
This book holds the attention of its intended audience beyond belief. The repetitious phrase, spoken by the would be monster, enables young readers to stay involved as they anticipate each animals incounter. Older readers can't wait to find out the monster's true identity. Best of all the illustrations don't give the monster's identity away until the appropriate time. All during the story it is evident the children's imaginations are whirling wildly. A must have for any teacher or reading volunter. ... Read more
