3-0 out of 5 stars Good for kids under age 9
(...) I found the pictures and stuff in the book to be fun but is very basic for me. It was written so that I could understand it but would be to hard for a very young kid in 1st or second grade to read without a parent helping. The book has too basic stuff for someone my age who already knew how the pieces moved but needed to learn more.
I got more out of "Lasker's Manuel of Chess" (good for kids 12 on up)and "Chess for Juniors" (good for kids age 8 on up) which contains lots more stuff, but without nice pictures like "Chess for Children". So it kind of matters exactly what you are looking for in deciding which beginners book is best for you. If you are a parent wanting to read the book to your kid and show pictures then "Chess for Children" would be a good place to start. If you want your kid to read the book themselves or they are beyond how the pieces move or if you are an adult wanting to learn then get "Chess for Juniors". "Lasker's Manuel of Chess" would be good for an adult or teen age kid.

5-0 out of 5 stars Teaches the moves with instruction and entertainment
I am a chess coach with a personal library of over 400 chess books, including many primers that teach the basic moves. Let me tell you why I have starting using this CHESS FOR CHILDREN as a text book for my introductory classes. First, the clear writing style and large pages with attractive diagrams make it easy to follow. Second, the content is almost perfect - everything the kids need to learn (setting up the board, how the pieces move) is shown in precise order. This sounds easy, but it is amazing how many learn chess books out there have been wrecked by some graphic designer putting style over content. Lastly, the book is fun to read, and yet imparts genuine instruction - which is the best way to keep the attention of my classes.

5-0 out of 5 stars Captivating and well-organized
I gave this book to my son, aged 5, and was impressed when he sat down and read it for two hours straight. As an elementary school teacher as well as a chess player, I would recommend this book for teaching a child how to play. It is well-organized and starts with the basics - the name of each piece, how each piece moves, how to set up a chessboard.
The format is large and the diagrams and arrows are attractive. My son was particularly excited by the Terribly Tough Tests that were set every few pages, with solutions at the back of the book. The authors have got the level exactly right, which in my experience very few beginner books achieve. There are sections on chess notation, draws, basic checkmates and some simple tactics, but these are all extras - the primary aim is to teach the rules and moves of chess to a youngster, and in this the book succeeds well.
The benefits of chess in teaching logical thinking are well known, and it has even been proved that chess can improve a child's skill at maths. As a genuinely instructional primer, this is easily the best I have seen.

5-0 out of 5 stars Lovely book to learn from
I never knew that chess was so simple to learn. This book teaches the very basic moves of chess, and is so easy to follow. I got Chess for Children as a birthday present from my Dad, who is a good player. After showing how each piece moves the books sets you a "terribly tough test" to see if you have understood. It took me one evening to learn how the pawns and pieces move and I played my first game the next day! Great book. ... Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars Mazes too easy
My 5 year old son loves mazes, but he found this book to be way to easy. He finished the book in a half hour sitting at dinner at a restaurant.

3-0 out of 5 stars Not Bad
The age bracket shown for this book is 4-8 but our 6 year old has quickly mastered the puzzles - they are rather easy. He enjoys them but I can't imagine him enjoying them 2 years from now.

So, a good book for kids at the younger end of the recommended age bracket.

5-0 out of 5 stars This book brings the Pioneer life into *our* lives.
PIONEER DAYS is a wonderful hands-on approach to teaching our children the pioneer lifestyle. The book follows a ficticious family thru the year 1843 and allows you to learn with your children what life on the homestead was like, including crafts, recipes, games and more. I would recommend it to homeschoolers especially as a good source for pioneer study. It has a good bibliography in the back for additional readings on the time period, including the LITTLE HOUSE ON THE PRAIRIE series. If you are hooked with this style of learning, there are other titles in this series (AMERICAN KIDS IN HISTORY) with which you may continue your study of American History. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Math Games for Middle School
I teach middle school mathematics and I think the book is great to aid in cooperative learning groups. Using the information and developing work stations will enhance the students' knowledge of the material. As a lesson, the book would require the creativity of the teacher to add other material and/or adjustments to make it interesting. This book is best for reteaching or review of the topics being taught.

1-0 out of 5 stars Just a bad math book!
I teach Middle School Pre-Algebra and One Year Algebra. Every summer I try and purchase books and magazines in order to find new and interesting lesson plans. I purchased this book thinking I could get at least something new and interesting to excite my kids. This book definitely didnt help. College students would be bored with the books writing style and exercises. And most of the ideas are old and rejected from years past.

Hand-outs and book assignments are not inspiring. A book titled "Math Games" should be just that; a book full of math games. Not one with mundane hand-outs.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great "Daily Math" Problems

5-0 out of 5 stars Clap Hands is wonderful!
My little 16 month old daughter loves this book. We have to read it every night before bedtime so she can "wave to daddy, wave to mom". I also read this book (along with tickle tickle and all fall down) to my 11 year old son when he was a baby/toddler. This book has lasting power over many years and I highly recommend it

5-0 out of 5 stars Perfect to read out loud
Our toddler had us read this so many times that we memorized it quickly. It's rhythm and rhyme are so catchy that we could repeat the words YEARS after we returned it to the library. Now we're buying it as a baby gift for someone else to enjoy. Like "All Fall Down" (also by Oxenbury) the pictures are adorable multi-cultural children having fun together. It's a nice size and length for a board book. ... Read more

Poet Jack Prelutsky again pairs up with two-time Caldecott Honor artistPeter Sís to create Scranimal Island, a fantastical, off-the-map place inhabitedby unusual animals from Hippopotamushrooms to Potatoads to a pride ofBroccolions. A boy and girl on a scooter, equipped with essentials from umbrellato inner tube, fly from habitat to habitat over Sís's dreamy, mountainouslandscapes à la Tibet: Throughthe Red Box. They make their way through the clutch of Spinachickens, past the Camelberta Peaches to the "Sweet Porcupineapple, / Unflappable chap, /You happily amble / All over the map." Prelutsky's biological inventions are asclever as they are silly, and it's wonderful that kids are allowed to figure outthe hybrid themselves in Rhinocerose, Cardinalbacore, etc. Prelutsky's glee iscontagious, and kids will get a kick out of the wordplay in poems like "Oh SleekBananaconda": "You slither on your belly, / And you slither on your chin. /You're only unappealing / As you shed your slinky skin." Pronunciation guidesfor each creature garnish each page, in case you can't pronounce Toucanemonesright off the bat, and an iconic guide to the island's animals adorns the tableof contents page. Gorgeous endpapers reveal Sís's map of Scranimal Island andits curious denizens. It's impossible to pick a favorite, between theunbelievably cute Pandaffodil and the detested Radishark. Highly recommended.(Ages 6 to 10) --Karin Snelson ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Simple, but Fun
I gave this book to my baby when he was about a month old. Although his vision wasn't very developed, he liked to rub the soft puppy on the front of the book.I read him each page (there's only one to three words per page) and pointed out what the puppy was doing. The wording is very simple, and there are only six pages in the book, but that works for young infants with tiny attention spans.

Now that my son is 11 months old, he likes to play with this book on his own.He turns each page and looks at the pictures, and then he goes through it all over again. The nice thing is, I can put it at the foot of his crib when he goes to sleep at night, and when he wakes up in the morning, he has something soft and safe to play with. This occupies him for a few minutes so that I can sleep in just a little bit longer. When he's finished looking at his book each morning, he starts calling for me and I know it's time to get up and go greet him.I just think that "reading" a book is a great way for a baby to start off his day.

3-0 out of 5 stars Too small to choke on, too large to fit in my wallet
I was a tad disappointed by the tacked-on, hackish ending to this book, but I have to admit that the preceeding five pages really got my pulse racing.Such action!Such adventure! Not to mention the baby-soft feel of the cover.Predictable ending, but overall a fine story.
I'm hoping Ben Affleck will be tapped to play the lead in any up-coming movie version. ... Read more
