4-0 out of 5 stars Great book, but...
My ten month old loves his Karen Katz books (we have four of them). He loves to lift the flaps as we go, but sometimes he gets excited and tears them right off -- the flaps are paper thin in this book. It seems like we're always repairing them. But that's the only downside...the illustrations are colorful and we always touch his nose when we get to the nose page and his ears, etc and he giggles. They're very cute books. I just wish they were sturdier.

5-0 out of 5 stars My Daughters favorite!
I cannot say enough wonderful things about this book. Karen Katz has such wonderful illusration thate appeal to young children. We have almost all of her books, but this on is my daughter's favorite. She takes it almost everywhere with her, and somethime even sleeps with it too! It has been read so many time that I had to buy another copy, but it was money well spent.

5-0 out of 5 stars Adorable!
Similar to Karen Katz' 'Where is Baby's Belly Button', 'Toes, Ears & Nose' is a delightful book that allows little ones to 'find' noses, toes and tummies, this time by lifting flaps in a 'peek-a-boo' kind of way. My 14 month old enjoys this book, especially now since we are mastering where noses and toes are on ourselves. Very sweet indeed. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Attention!
This book will grab your attention as you are drawn into the details of a story without words. I have used this book with primary aged students and they are delighted in the depth of the details in a story without words. Really gets them to look at things a little more closely!!

5-0 out of 5 stars VideoBook
It may take a while to understand HOW the book actually works, but that's only part of the story, the transitions will make your child imagine how they happened. The book works in several levels, provoking thought and commentary from its reader, or in this case "visualizer".

5-0 out of 5 stars This is an excellent coffeetable book!
I was introduced to this book last night when it was given as a gift to my 50 year-old cousin. All of the aduts present were intrigued with this near-wordless masterpiece. None of us read the inside jacket before 'reading' the book and that is the way it should be read to be truly appreciated. I think the book would be 'wasted' on very young children who would see it as just another picture book. Excellent gift. I'm ordering them for all my (grown) children this minute!

5-0 out of 5 stars Cool! Unique! Fun for all ages
What a unique, thought provoking book. Just shows what you see is not "as it appears". LOVED IT! Giving it to everyone I know at Christmas.

5-0 out of 5 stars You never know what your going to get!
My friend recently brought this book to school. She got it off of here. I loved it! Your always wondering what you'll find next. This book is definitley a "page turner" and thats what people like the best.

Book Description

The international best-seller that makes mathematics a thrilling exploration.

In twelve dreams, Robert, a boy who hates math, meets a Number Devil, who leads him to discover the amazing world of numbers: infinite numbers, prime numbers, Fibonacci numbers, numbers that magically appear in triangles, and numbers that expand without . As we dream with him, we are taken further and further into mathematical theory, where ideas eventually take flight, until everyone-from those who fumble over fractions to those who solve complex equations in their heads-winds up marveling at what numbers can do.

Hans Magnus Enzensberger is a true polymath, the kind of superb intellectual who loves thinking and marshals all of his charm and wit to share his passions with the world. In The Number Devil, he brings together the surreal logic of Alice in Wonderland and the existential geometry of Flatland with the kind of math everyone would love, if only they had a number devil to teach it to them.

4-0 out of 5 stars Easy read, but good book....
Crossing the story Alice in Wonderland with a small, red, fiery-tempered devil with a passion for numbers gives you The Number Devil, a perfect tale with funny and curious characters.

Robert hates math, and he gets irritated because his math teacher doesn't allow calculators in class. In addition to that, he has peculiar dreams all the time. Then, one night, completely out of the blue, he dreams about a Number Devil, who takes him away to a fantastic world of numbers. Robert learns all about different mathematical ideas and concepts in a fun way. Over the course of 12 different nights, Robert learns about simple math ideas like factorials, fractions, the importance of zero, and the idea of infinity. But Robert's adventures don't stop there; Robert also learns about more complex things like triangle numbers, Fibonacci numbers, imaginary numbers, and irrational numbers. The Number Devil makes up funny terms in order to explain these to Robert. Square roots are called "rutabagas," prime numbers are "prima donnas," squaring becomes "number hopping," the Fibonacci sequence is called "the Bonacci numbers, " and factorials are named "vrooms."

Did you know that you can take any even number larger than two and find two prime numbers that add up to it? The Number Devil presents different mathematical ideas to Robert, using funny things like furry calculators and coconuts. Even Robert uses what he learns in his dreams in class. For example, the Number Devil uses coconuts to show Robert what triangular numbers are. He uses the coconuts to make triangles on the ground, and he comes up with the first ten triangular numbers: 1, 3, 6, 10, 15, 21, 28, 36, 45, and 55. Next, he comes up with a little rule for triangular numbers: Any number greater than 1 can be the sum of two or three triangle numbers. Try 83, for example. It is the sum of 10 + 28 + 45.

Not only does the Number Devil show Robert different math principles, but he takes him to Number Paradise, and there Robert meets different mathematicians like Carl Friedrich Gauss (of course, the Number Devil makes up names for the mathematicians as well, so Gauss is called Professor Horrors), Georg Cantor (Professor Singer), and Leonhard Euler (Owl). Robert also meets Felix Klein (Dr. Happy Little), and he sees the famous 'Klein Bottle' (the Little Bottle). The Number Devil shows how one can't tell the inside of this object from the outside!

I thought this book was very enjoyable and funny. The illustrations were amusing and the characters were hilarious. I especially liked the Number Devil himself. I would give the book an eight out of ten only because some of the concepts described were very elementary, and it became boring for me at times. Overall, I didn't learn a lot, but the little tidbits of information and the more complex ideas were interesting. I would recommend this book for all ages as a good read aloud or for a bedtime reading book. Happy reading!

4-0 out of 5 stars THE NUMBER DEVIL
THE NUMBER DEVIL WAS A VERY INTERESTING BOOK,IT HELPED ME IN MATH A LOT.AT THE FIRST BEGING OF THE BOOK I DID NOT AT ALL LIKE THE BOOK. IN THE BOOK THEY ALSO TAUGHT ME LANGUAGE.I THINK I WILL GET A VERY GOOD GRADE ON THE BOOK. By.MARKEL

4-0 out of 5 stars The number devil
Well, this book was really interesting. It was alright to me, It was different from other books. This book talks about math more than any other books. It will teach you about something that you don't know anything about in math, and you will learn it easier if you do what he teaches you.
Well, not only does the book help with math,it has a lot of metephors. Well it has a lot of funny things in it. The book is really about Robet is having dreams aboout math and the The Number Devil is teaching him. He is learning things that he doesn't understand in school. Every night he has a dream, and it helps him every day he goes to school. At the end his teacher is amazed at what he can do. IF you read this book you will find out what happens.
Epiphany.

4-0 out of 5 stars The Number Devil
I like the way it made it more fun for me to learn how do to the math skills in this book. This book was good, because it was really better learning a math lesson instead of just opening a math book and studying. It was a very fun way to learn how to do the triangle math skill and all the others. This book has very good pictures to help show how Robert learned from the coconuts and the 1's forest. It showed how the Number Devil was a great teacher to Robert and how he was able to understand everything the Number Devil said and taught. This book made it fun for kids my age to learn math skills. The way we read this book is that we read a chapter everynight. When we came in everyday for class we talked about the math in that chapter and that was our lesson in class. It was more fun that just having a teacher sit in his/her desk and not showing us anything of anyway to work these problems. I learned these things the year beforI didn't understand any of it. Now that I have read the book, I really understand everything a lot better that before.

4-0 out of 5 stars The Number Devil
I liked and disliked this book because it was a good way for other kids to learn math and get better at reading at the same time. I also disliked this book because it just didn't interest me a lot. Another reason I liked this book is because it showed you how to work math problems in different ways. It taught me that you can make math fun if you make a game out of it or use food to make fractions. This book is an easy, fun book to read. If you get into the book you will like it. And if you like pretzels you will like this book too. By:Justin ... Read more

Artist Sandra Boynton has been charming adults for decades with her whimsical, animal-centric greeting cards and her droll sense of humor. When Boynton transferred her weirdly wonderful critters to board books for babies, she made publishing history. These short, hilarious books are perfectly suited to toddler tastes, with their small size, few words, cheerful colors, funny jokes, and silly animals. Blue Hat, Green Hat is all about getting dressed, and stars a very silly turkey who just doesn't get it. (Feet in the hat, pants on the head, etc.) His continuing refrain is "Oops." Moo, Baa, LA LA LA! investigates the sounds animals make, including pigs who sing. Doggies is "a counting and barking book" about the many sounds dogs can make, and A to Z frolics through the alphabet with amusing animal antics from an aardvark admiring to a zebra zigzagging. Parents love Boynton as much as kids do, and these four books in a compact boxed set will no doubt become household favorites! (Baby to age 3) --Marcie Bovetz ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Great fun for "children at heart" of all ages
This is a wonderful series of books that enables toddlers to "read" at a very young age. The humor is ageless, and I always give this set as a gift to first-time parents, to ensure that they know about Boynton's books. Although I love them all, I have a special fondness for "Doggies" which must be read with expression to be enjoyed! Trying to manipulate those barks is great fun.

My daughter's personal favorite is "But Not tThe Hippopotamus", my son loves "Moo, Baa, La La La", and we all giggle at "Blue Hat, Green Hat".

Although my kids have outgrown board books (at 13 and 17) we have never put away the Boynton books, as we enjoy going back to them for the respite and pleasure they continue to afford all of us! (Yes, the kids admit that they still love these books! )

Set yourself free, and enjoy!

4-0 out of 5 stars Love Boynton's Books!!!
What I love best about Sandra Boynton's board books is that they are fun for both my son to hear and for me to read. Our long-time favorite was "Moo Baa LALALA" - at 17 months, my son could recite every one of the animal sounds (well, except the pig). The only down-side of this set is the "Doggies" book. My husband and I hid this one because we detested reading it - all the barking, howling, whining, arfing, and woofing was tiresome.

5-0 out of 5 stars The BEST author for little bits!!!
When our oldest (now 6) was 3 months old we happened upon Moo, Baa, La La La, bought it and we are now, two kids later on our fourth copy! We of course bought more and more Boynton books, and just got Philadelphia Chickens for the girls as a Christmas gift! (It includes a CD of songs- it's GREAT!) I found that whatever topics we had Boynton books on, like colors and types of clothing (Blue Hat, Green Hat), animal sounds (Moo, Baa, La La La), parts of the body (Horns to Toes), my daughters knew very early. Boynton book are funny, have bright and engaging graphics, and educational value! But, the greatest thing about her books is that not only will your kids love them, but you will love them! They are my favorite books to read to them too! And my kids didn't grow out of them as quickly as most of the board books. In fact, when my oldest was learning to read we used them and she now reads them to her baby sister. In my opinion, I think that Sandra Boynton is on the same level of skill and talent as Dr. Suess.
I have purchased at least one Boynton book for every baby shower I have gone to in the past five years, and I hope that everyone will discover how wonderful these books are.

5-0 out of 5 stars My Baby Laughed
We were at a local playgroup and they read Blue Hat, Green Hat. My 7-month old son laughed out loud. He had laughed before, but I think this was the first time he laughed without direct eye contact or being tickled. After playgroup I inquired -- Sandra who?? I hadn't heard of these books, but have since purchased several.

My baby is now 2 and has a 4-month old brother. These books have become very popular favorites for reading time in our home.

I wonder how old our new baby will be when he laughs at the "silly chicken".

5-0 out of 5 stars Gotta have 'em.
My first two ladies (now 5.5 years and 4.5 years old) loved these books to death, literally, so I'll be replacing them (both Volumes One and Two) soon after the current Wiggle arrives. We all loved "Doggies" - "Nine doggies on a moonlit night AaaaaaOOOOOOOooooooo" - what fun to read! The ladies loved "The Oops Book" - Blue Hat, Green Hat - as well, because that crazy turkey just *didn't get it*. All of Sandra Boynton's books are wonderful, though.

I've been doing my best to make sure that every baby *I* know has these books in his library; everyone else should do the same. ... Read more

The thinking's not fuzzy in these board books, but the animalscertainly are. Sandra Boynton's familiar furry creatures introduce simple concepts in this bright collection of four books, replete with clever line drawings. In Horns and Toes and In Between, three horned monsters teach the parts of the body in rhyme: "...and we have a fuzzy TUMMY that we all like to pat / and a little BELLY BUTTON in the middle of that."The Going to Bed Book gets a Noah's Ark of animals organized for bed: "They hang their towels on the wall / and find pajamas, big and small." Opposites is just that: cute animals "high and low / fast and slow / heavy and light / day and night." In the rhyming reader But Not the Hippopotamus, a hippo finds himself on the outs as "a cat and two rats are trying on hats. / But not the hippopotamus. / A moose and a goose together have juice. / But not the hippopotamus." Rest assured the hippo finds love at the end. (Baby to preschool) --Claire Dederer ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars My daughter's favorites!
When I first got this group of books (and also the other set), it didn't hold my daughter's attention. She was still just a baby, so I'm assuming the pictures didn't thrill her. Then she turned 18 months... In the last three months I think I've read each of these books at least twice a day. I know them by heart and she does too. In fact she sleeps with a couple every night!

5-0 out of 5 stars Simply essential for every well-read infant.
I think "The Going to Bed Book" is the best night-night book ever written. "But Not the Hippopotamus" is a tear-jerker - "But YES the hippopotamus!" - and "Horns to Toes" is a rockin' good book to sing, rather than read. Sandra Boynton is wonderful; I want her to come to my house and hang out. In the meantime, I'll settle for reading these books to my kids and making sure that every baby *I* know has them in his library.

5-0 out of 5 stars great books
Our two year old loves Sandra Boynton books and we enjoy reading them to him. Great books.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent books for 0 - 3
These four books are all very good! My 15 month old loves them now as much as she did when she was first born. In fact, Boynton books are the only books she likes now in her active toddler stage. They are the only books she will sit still for, and I have over 100 books for her to choose from! They all have cute, short, catchy rhymes that are fun to listen to and read. The colors are very bright and the animals/creatures are really cute! Her favorite is The Going To Bed Book amoung these four, but she likes them all very much.

5-0 out of 5 stars Boynton's Greatest Hits: Volume II
These are must buy books for the kids!!. The books are great. I've never bought Boynton's books before and after having this volume : The Going to Bed Book, But Not the Hippotamus, Opposites, Horns to Toes; I must say that I am going to get more of Sandra Byonton's books. The rhymes are short and simple but nice and I think this is important for infants as their attention span is pretty short. The illustrations are wonderful and kids won't go tired of them forever as they are cartoon characters. My 8 month old daughter seems to enjoy listening to the rhymes and looking at the pictures as I enjoy reading the books to her. Get these volume now.....I really recommend them. ... Read more

Book Description

What does an elephant do? It stomps its foot. Can you? From the creator of such beloved classics as The Grouchy Ladybug and The Mixed-Up Chameleon comes this interactive story that invites kids to imitate animal movements. Watching giraffes bend their necks or monkeys wave their arms is fun, but nothing could be better than joining in. From their heads down to their toes, kids will be wriggling, jiggling, and giggling as they try to keep up with these animals!Alligators wiggle, elephants stop, gorillas thump, and giraffes bend. Can you do it? ‘ I can do it!’ is the confidence-building message of this fun-filled interactive picture book. A variety of familiar animals invite young children to copy their antics, and as they play, they will learn such important skills as careful listening, focusing attention, and following instructions. Just as alphabet books introduce the very young child to letters and simple words, From Head to Toe introduces the basic body parts and simple body movements. And in the same way that children progress from understanding simple words to reading and writing sentences and stories, so they will progress from simple body movements to dancing, gymnastics, and other sports and activities, with confidence and pleasure.

Eric Carle's colorful collages have delighted children for more than a generation. Each book provides hours of fun while encouraging them to stretch their imaginations. His matchless words and illustrations now send out a new challenge:

5-0 out of 5 stars What an entertaining book...!
My 16-month old daughter loves to turn her head, wave her arms, raise her shoulders, with the colorful animals in this book. Excellent book to teach children body parts, movements and animals. (She surprised us one day by thumping her chest when she saw a gorilla picuture somewhere else.) I also read this book to her classmates in a play group and they all loved it, too. Have fun "bending your knees" with your kids!

5-0 out of 5 stars One of Eric Carle's best!
This is a fantastic book! The large, colorful pictures and the simple, clear text keep children bending and stretching right along with the animals! Still, unlike many of the reviewers who loved this for their one-year-olds, we found that this book didn't work for my active, not very verbal daughter when she was one (even though she sat for other books). We pulled it out again around the time she turned 2 and she LOVED IT. This book was a huge hit. Now at almost 4 it is still one of her favorites. Even if she's tired at bedtime she gets on the floor to do her donkey kicks along with the donkey! My older daughter also reported that this was one of her preschool teacher's favorite storytime books. I would say that for many children this book, despite it's deceptively simple pictures and text, is more appropriate for older children (age 2-4). This is a book I buy all the time for 2nd birthdays - It's always a hit! (especially good for active kids who prefer being "active" listeners!) This is an excellent choice for a book that will last kids for years!

5-0 out of 5 stars A surprise favorite!
OK, I admit it. This book was a gift, and not one I would have bought for my son. I completely failed to see its charm.

That is, until I read it with my one-year-old son!

"From Head to Toe" was an instant hit and the first book that made Jack laugh out loud! He asks for it over and over again, and before too long, he was making the signs along with me as we read. And shortly after that I had to laugh out loud when I saw him "reading" the book to himself, making the signs and saying "I Can Do It!" on each page!

I highly recommend this book for older babies and toddlers. Mamma may not be enchanted at first -- but I'll bet your little one will shwo you just how much fun this book really is!

5-0 out of 5 stars Gets kids who won't sit for books to ask for this one
This book worked wonders for my children when they were about 15 months old up through 24 months old. At that time neither were interested in sitting and listening to stories but this book was terrific -- it gets them up and moving while learning different body parts. Awesome!! They thought beating their chests like a gorilla was hilarious. Head to Toe was a wonderful introduction for our children on following a book from beginning to end and opened the door for bedtime stories and more.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great book
Though I don't recommend it for bed time, this book is great fun for the kids to do the things asked of them in the book. They move their heads, kick feet, etc. My kids really enjoy it. ... Read more

It's never too early to start kids reading. Even in infancy, young eyes can begin to make connections between images on a page and the real thing.White on Black is an ideal first book, and one that will continue to fascinate the very youngest readers as they grow. Exquisitely simple, solid white pictures of everyday objects--a banana, a duck, a bottle--against a black background provide high contrast for developing eyes. This wordless picture book encourages caregivers to engage the child as they "read" together: "Oh look, a boat, that looks like your bath toy, doesn't it?"

With White on Black's companion book, Black on White, Tana Hoban has created a striking pair of visual tools to increase the youngest readers' burgeoning powers of perception. In this complex world, it's a joy to find a book that sees the world in the simplest of terms. (Baby to Preschool) --Emilie Coulter ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Wonderful book to give as a baby present
This is one of the few books that I ALWAYS send as a baby present. It's fantastic---the black and white illustrations are great for a newborn and many of my friends have continued to "read" the book with their child even when he or she became a toddler.

Try her other book---which has black images on a white background as well.

5-0 out of 5 stars Psychologist mom's ONLY shower gift
Before my first-born could speak or even SIT, all the adults around him could tell which page he liked most--true communication from an infant that didn't involve crying (or other intense and directed body language)! We were amazed that we all had noticed. The books got LOTS of attention from our wee one. Face it, there is just not a lot you CAN "read" to an infant those first six months of life. He loved them. I'm here buying my fifth or sixth set of these two books for yet another mom-to-be. They are so much more memorable than green and yellow clothing, for both parents and babes.

4-0 out of 5 stars white on black
This book is wonderful for topic focused conversation with your infant. Sometimes it is hard to find things to talk about with an infant. This books helps to solve that problem so that we can expose our babies to the conversational language they need to learn how to speak.

5-0 out of 5 stars The perfect gift for a newborn
These simple, familiar silhouettes held my baby's interest from the time he was a few weeks old until about his first birthday. For a while I propped the book open on his changing table, and it kept his attention occupied during diaper changes. I wish hospitals would send a copy home with every newborn, to help all infants get the early mental stimulation they need.

5-0 out of 5 stars A great first book for a baby.
We "read" this book to our son when he was a few weeks old, not because he understood the pictures, but because he could track the black and white pictures. Reading is extremely important to any child and we wanted to start early. So, eventhough our 4 week old had no idea what the words meant, he would nestle as we described the pictures to him and turned the pages. How else does a child learn to love reading? When our son was approximately one year old he could begin to describe some of the pictures and he would sit on the floor and "read" this book himself. An excellent, excellent first book for your baby or for a gift. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars What's that Smell?
The Gas We Pass by Shinta Cho, is a hilarious book of the reasons we pass gas. The illustrations are great. The color scheme of the pictures themselves helps the imagination grow, and suitable for children. It helps them learn the scientific concept of why gas is passed. It also tells which foods make gas stink, and how much gas actually comes out in a fart. It's really amazing what some never know. There is some inappropriate content in the book; it is a picture of a little boy and his father in the bathtub, both of whose genitals are exposed. Besides that, it is great for people of all ages. It is a book everyone should take the chance to read. I promise you, this book doesn't just let off gas; it's educational and funny and these are the two important elements of learning. So the next time you pass gas, you will think about how it happens, and there won't be anymore smell-raising questions. Enjoy!

5-0 out of 5 stars Gas is Good
Book Review: The Gas We Pass What was Shinta Cho smoking when she wrote this ghastly book? The Gas We Pass is a very informative and educational book about farts, farts, and, yep, you guessed it, more farts. Everything you ever wanted to know about farts is in this book. It splurges into the stinky subject of why farts smell, why it is healthy to fart, and why you should not hold your farts. Cho even put a diagram of the human body in the book, which shows how farts are processed. The illustrations are fantastic if you have a sick sense of humor. They are of different animals farting and burping. The illustrations show a naked man and a naked boy in the bathtub together watching their farts bubble and rise to the surface. This book is suitable for two age groups: young pre-adolescent kids and teenage boys. If you have a problem with flatulence, do not go to the doctor, read this book. It will save you an expensive trip to the doctor's office.

2-0 out of 5 stars Not that Great
This books starts off pretty good. I like the fart humor, but then it gets into the scientifics. i am not against kids learning the science of gas, but it almost feels like two different books. the beginning seems like a good book to give a young child who is just learning about bodily functions. but then it starts getting into specifics and it feels like it needs an older audience. it's not a bad book. it's just not the books i was expecting.

5-0 out of 5 stars The Gas We Pass Review
This Book is sooo groovy! I loved the illistrations, that brought a smile to my face! :) This book was very informational. I actually learned more about my passing gas. I enjoyed reading this book because it brings me happiness and makes me even more individualed! I recamend this to people who want to get a smile goig on their face! Try it!

3-0 out of 5 stars Only good as a joke good for nothing else
Yes people with a sense of humour or an 11 year old love to laugh at farts, and it seems this is the book to give them. All though it says its intended to teach kids about farting/gas the mere thought of this book acutally helping a child with that is farfecthed. It tells vertually nothing except when you eat you can fart/burp and that all animals fart. Infact i think this book would be bad for children as it shows a elpehant farting witch knocks its trainer over (again its joke purpose appears again) Also it shows a picture of a naked boy (its a drawing nothing graphic but still) I think most monkeys would know the facts in this book but its pictures are mildy ammuseing and its pretty funny as a joke to give to someone as a present. All in all its pretty funny as a gag but useless as giveing children information on farting. Its humour for ages 6 and up pretty much thats all i think the authour ment for it to be... ... Book Description

The important thing about The Important Book--is that you let your child tell you what is important about the sun and the moon and the wind and the rain and a bug and a bee and a chair and a table and a pencil and a bear and a rainbow and a cat (if he wants to). For the important thing about The Important Book is that the book goes on long after it is closed. What is most important about many familiar things—like rain and wind, apples and daisies—is suggested in rhythmic words and vivid pictures. ‘A perfect book . . . the text establishes a word game which tiny children will accept with glee.’ —K.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great book
I used this book at the beginning of the school year to get my special ed students to write about what was important to them or about why the things in the book are important. They all loved the activity and it was one of their favorite picks for reading time.

5-0 out of 5 stars affirming perceptions
This thoughtfull Brown book methodically affirms a small child's growing ability to construct opinions about his or her world. Misunderstood as asserting objective classifications, Brown instead elaborates on the ellusive season of child development when subjective and objective information are indistinguishable:
"the important thing about a daisy is that it is white" and air is "the color of air".
Recommended if you want the child in your life to catch Brown's vision of personal discovery.

2-0 out of 5 stars Great author - mediocre book
This short volume has failed to spark much interest within me and my children. It lacks the poetic lilt of "Goodnight Moon" and the quiet force of "Runaway Bunny." The illustrations, many in black and white, seem from another era. Yet, they are not timeless and fail to inspire.

Brown's muddled characterization of the essence of everyday objects seems neither accurate nor absurd, neither artistic nor banal. Why, for example, are we told that the important thing about a shoe is that "you put your foot in it" when so many more relevant characteristics could have been chosen? (protects your foot from harm, keeps your foot warm, makes a fashion statement, leaves footprints, gets mud on the carpet, etc.)

5-0 out of 5 stars Teach the"Main Idea"
We use this selection to teach the concept of the main idea. I start the entire year off using this book. I read the book aloud to the students. We discuss each aspect of the important or the main idea of each subject. After completing the book we then write a page about ourselves. Example: The important thing about Ellis is that he is a toehead,he loves computer games , he plays with his trucks and he always wears Carharts, but the important thing about Ellis is that he is a toehead. Ellis is a student that has the whitest hair you have ever seen...everyone always says something to him about his "toehead". The children (usually third graders) each do their own page and we publish our book for the classroom. We try to have this completed by our open house. The parents really enjoy it and they get to know their childs classmates in a special way. Just a thought!

4-0 out of 5 stars Great for the beginning of the school year!
I use this book at a "getting to know you" starter for the 1st day of school. After reading the book, the students start to see the pattern. I then have them write something about themselves using the same pattern in the book. "The most important thing about Sue is that she likes to read. Sue has 3 cats, plays soccer and can pitch like Nolan Ryan, but the most important thing about Sue is that she likes to read." I then have them illustrate these things on manilla paper or with the computer, then bind all of the pages into a class book. The kids love getting to know each other this way. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Another Winner by Mr. Willems!
I think this could be the very first book about going number 1!The art, the story, the subject matter -- all beautifully put together. Educational, rewarding and even comes complete with fantastic and fun stickers to use in the encouragement of your child's learning process (mine's not there yet, but with the help of this book I know she will be soon!). This is more than just a learning tool, it is a great book and one I foresee reading together for many years to come. A Classic!

5-0 out of 5 stars Useful -- "I feel proud"
We're using this book during a potty training marathon with our rather willful 2-year old. It has helped him put words to the positive feeling he gets when he succeeds ("I feel proud", he says, beaming.) The text is presented in a fun way, in the form of celebratory signs and banners paraded by supportive mice. His older brother enjoys sounding out the words, so it's nice to have a book they both can enjoy. I haven't used the stickers and chart yet (he's not to that stage yet) but I remember hand-making something similar for his older brother when we were working on consistency -- it worked like a champ!

5-0 out of 5 stars GREAT, Must Get!!
As a professional Child Counselor, I recommend this book and own it. The reason for this book, is to teach children how to use the restroom in a polite way. Eating, sleeping, and using the bathroom are learned behaviors.

The author writes very simplistic, and the pictures are eye-catching. Wonderful book

2-0 out of 5 stars I want my money back
My son finished the first grade book within two months, and he wanted to do more math homework. So I bought this book and third grade book for him. To my surprise, I found that about 1/3 of the material are copies from the 1st grader book, and another 1/3 of pages are copies from the 3rd grader book. We both were very disappointed. (...)

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent Resource
My daughter is ahead of her class and needed to be challenged, by page 7 we found this book definitely a useful learning tool. It does NOT review 1st grade. I find it frustrating to purchase an age level book and have half of it be just stuff they have already covered. This IS NOT the case. Would definitely be a great book for home schooled children and look forward to purchasing the next levels.

5-0 out of 5 stars good math review book
I used this book to review second grade over the summer after finding my daughter had large gaps in her math education. My daughter loved placing the stars included in the workbookon each completed page. The math problem pages kept her interested because of how the problems were related to one another. For instance, on one line there were several ways of getting to the number 7 imbedded in two digit calculations. The book covers the major areas of math education.

5-0 out of 5 stars Introducing Math to 7-8 year olds
The Math Made Easy series is a complete home-study program to help your child practice the essential math skills they need in each grade. This workbook will provide practice for all the major topics for Grade 2 with an emphasis on the addition and subtraction of larger numbers.

You will also find a review of Grade 1 topics and a preview of the topics in the Grade 3 workbook. This is when they introduce Times Tables Practice.

A progress chart can be found at the start of the book and includes stars you can stick in the correct box that corresponds with the completed lessons.

The "Answer Section with Parents' Notes provides answers to all the activities in the book. These pages enable you to mark your children's work. There is a visual of each page and notes to help you explain the common errors and problems. Where appropriate, they indicate the type of practice needed to ensure that your children understand where and how they have made errors.

4-0 out of 5 stars It IS great for kids!
Our 5 year old got this as a birthday gift...he and his 7 year old brother LOVE this book and love explaining it to adult who don't get it quick enough! A great gift! We have to get Zoom now!

5-0 out of 5 stars THIS BOOK LEAVES ME SPEECHLESS...(and anyone who
has read any of my other reviews knows that being speechless isn't one of my major problems :- D

There isn't a written discription of this book that is adequate... The book is entirely visual. It is one continuous picture that changes in perspective by "ZOOMING" in on a part of the prior picture. It's like looking at a snow-globe....than being in the snow-globe....than being in a picture IN the snow-globe. The artwork is fascinating and the ability to pre-think the work as a whole would have daunted me if i were the artist... What a gift this book is. I bought it for my son but it has made a much more incredable impact on any adult i show it to. if you choose this book you will NOT be sorry. And it makes and excellent gift for a person "who has everything". I think if i had to be stuck on a desert island with one book this would be it!

5-0 out of 5 stars A visual feast of perspective!
Banyai manages to capture the readers imagination with brilliant illustrations as he pulls away from a minute detail that becomes a bigger part of the picture. My 9 year old son and I read this masterpiece over and over and as we journeyed deeper into to pages, an overwhelming sense of the largess of the world came to mind. This is a must read! It is thought provoking and riviting. ... Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars All Gimmick
My daughter recently received this book for her 4th birthday. Not to brag, but she has very advanced verbal and math skills for her age, so I consider her to be appropriately classified as Pre-K. That being said, this book is way over her head. She doesn't know how to read. She is trying to learn the alphabet, for which purpose this book is ill-suited. The first three pages instruct the child to trace the letters of the alphabet. From there, the child is expected to do a number of exercises requiring mastery of the alphabet. The directions make little sense if one doesn't already know how to read, which is unreasonable for anyone to expect as background knowledge for the Pre-K level. Often, it is not even obvious to me what the creators of the curriculum intend by some of the exercises.
Furthermore, the colorful cats, etcetera are distracting. I ripped out the "reward" stickers and gave those to her right away, after I noticed that she was rushing through the page, doing unacceptable work, in order to hurry up and get the sticker. I think the stickers are damaging to my attempts to instill in her the intrinsic value of learning.
This book may be useful for children who already know how to read somewhat as a review of the alphabet and numbers, but I do not recommend it for even the most advanced 4-year-olds.

5-0 out of 5 stars Wonderful
I've been aware of this line of products for some time. Recently while cruising one of the large area booksellers I purchased this for my 3 1/2 year old son. -- I liked the format of having all of the activities in one large book which I could store safely in our book case, instead of having to search amongst the coloring books for the smaller single subject books. -- My son delighted in the book from the first time we worked on it together. -- I read the instructions and he is able to complete many of the activities. Just enough of the concepts are beyond his abilities right now that this will be able to provide months of engaging challenges for him. He seems to really enjoy figuring out the right responses 'all by himself' and the look of pride and satisfaction he gets is just priceless. -- The pages are also perforated, so just last week I took several pages with us on an airline flight. My son was content for the entire trip. - As we were leaving the airplane a woman seated in front of us complimented him on what a bright and well-behaved little boy he is. It made both of us feel great.

5-0 out of 5 stars My neice can't put this book down!!
This is probably one of the best presents my 4 year old neice got. The first day she got it she did 55 pages in one day!! Now her mom has to tell her to take a break because she'll work on this book for hours! She's had it for a few months and its surprising that she hasn't gotten bored with it unlike her other books.

5-0 out of 5 stars Fun step-by-step learning
My almost 4-year old daughter just received this workbook (the 1st grade edition) as a present from Grandpa. She enjoys completing the excersises, with a little adult help to make sure that she is following the directions correctly. I like that the book progresses in difficulty as the lessons get completed. My daughter is already learning how to read with a Phonics method, so the phonics excercises were at the right challenge level. The workbook did help her pick up new sound combinations in the middle of words, which she had not covered yet in her Phonics class. I was surprised that she seemed to be able to handle the beginning Math without much trouble, such as grouping and counting by tens, and how two and three digit numbers are constructed, since before this workbook she was only counting up to twenty, and adding very small numbers. My daughter really likes the animal characters, and of course, the stickers. I plan on buying her some of the kindergarten books and as soon as she finishes them go back to this workbook.

5-0 out of 5 stars Wonderful learning tool!
My 6 year old daughter who will be in 1st grade this fall loves this book! This is one book that wont be thrown in the corner and forgotten. My daughter has worked hours on this book. She loves it!!! Count to 10, explore the alphabet, discover shapes, learn about opposites, and find the missing teddy bear in this big, colorful board book. Sesame Street's beloved Elmo guides young readers to lift more than 60 flaps to reveal humorous and edifying surprises. Over the word "dry," Grover gazes unsuspectingly into a garden hose. Turn the flap and guess what happens! Grover learns all about "wet." A towering pyramid of alphabet blocks contains objects starting with the same letter behind each flap: alligator, book, cookies. Large, sturdy flaps allow rough-tough toddler hands to clutch and pull as much as they want with minimal risk of tearing. 5-0 out of 5 stars A MUST HAVE
I purchased this book for my son who was not even 2 years old at the time and wow! This book was a huge success. It was a great way to introduce numbers, letters and opposites. My son could not get enough of it. He is nearly 3 years old now and still loves this book. It is a lot of fun to watch your child know what to expect from the pages and play along with the pictures. Although it is now extremely "used" and in need of replacement due to excessive use (my son may have loved it a little too much!), it is well worth the money of purchasing a new one. My daughter who is currently 6 months will now get her chance to experience Elmo the same way my son did.

5-0 out of 5 stars Alphabet!
We gave this book to our 16 month old daughter for the holidays and she simply hasn't put it down since. She actually says "alphabet" when she wants to read it, opens to the pyramid of blocks, and proceeds to name the items under each of the letters' flaps. She really loves it. It's also helping her learn her shapes as well as the other Sesame Street characters names. The drawings are beautiful and it's really a lot of fun.

5-0 out of 5 stars My Daughter Loves This Book!
I bought this book for my daughter as part of her birthday present when she turned 1. I did not think that she would love it as much as she does. She is now 17 months old and she still carries it around everywhere. Here favorite part is at the end when Elmo needs help finding his beloved teddy bear. When we find it together, she always gives the bear a big kiss and claps HOORAY!

4-0 out of 5 stars Great for Travel
I bought this book to keep my 22 month old daughter busy on a 7 hour flight. She LOVED it! She was so excited to open all the little doors to see what was behind all of them. It kept her busy for at least an hour! It's a sleek book, although large, and fits right down the side of my diaper bag. The little doors tear pretty easily, but we taped them back. She loves carrying it around with her wherever we go. AND the price here is better than the discount store!

5-0 out of 5 stars My Son LOVES It
My son is 12 months and enjoys looking at all kinds of books. And this is one of his absolute favorites. (I even like looking at it!) The pages are sturdy and the pictures are great. Very classic Sesame Street. He loves looking under all the flaps and pointing at each character. I'll definitely be buying this again if it ever wears out. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars 4 months and still going strong
I bought these for my daughter not knowing how much she would love them. Granted, she is only 11 months, but like the other reviews have said, the books are small enough to fit in her hands. She carries them EVERYWHERE! She even sleeps with a book or two. I love the colors, and the texture as well. With some board books, my daughter has gotten paper cuts, weird I thought. But not from these! They are awesome. I had just bought the ABC ones to start with but now I am getting the learning ones too.

5-0 out of 5 stars The best first birthday present ever!
My daughter received this for her first birthday. At first she loved reading the little books - which are sized perfectly for a toddler's chubby little hands. After a couple of months she became obsessed with stacking things and would spend time every day stacking and re-stacking the books. They are shaped just right for a young toddler to stack, and are much less frustrating than square blocks.

At about 18 months she got into colors and numbers and loved to sort the books by color and count them. Now at 21 months she is STILL playing with this toy - long after every other first birthday gift went to the attic or the thrift store. And the books and the box are still in great shape - this has to be the sturdiest toy we've ever owned.

I now give this box of books to every one year old I know. I can't say enough wonderful things about this toy!

5-0 out of 5 stars CAPTIVATING
I bought the Learning Block Books as a gift for my 13 month old niece. Although she was a bit tired (read cranky) at the time, it instantly captivated her. The box that holds the little books is very sturdy and has plenty of extra room to hold them (no struggling to fit them in). She immediately started to put the books in and pull them out. She then began to open them and look at the pictures. The books are color coded (and thick cardboard) so that the shapes and animals follow the same color theme. Since then she has continued to play with them daily and as she grows older the books give the opportunity to continue to learn.

5-0 out of 5 stars A great companion to the classic ABC Block Book set
Our daughter received the author's set of ABC Block Books as a gift when she was 8 months old, and it has been a beloved staple ever since. These are incredibly versatile book/toys which are effortlessly educational. Stack them, put them in and out of their box, look at the pictures, learn the letters, sort them by color, and of course read them out loud! Hours and hours of fun.

As soon as I saw this new collection I knew we had to have it. My daughter (now 18 months) was so excited! A whole new set...it was like finding the dead sea scrolls. And the books do not disappoint. I particularly like the shape and numbers books. The shapes encourage kids to look at everyday objects in different ways (e.g. pillows and doors are rectangles), and the numbers all conclude with the nice touch of a birthday cake with that number of candles. A winner all around. But if I were to buy just one, I'd still choose the ABC books, just because they're such a simple, natural set. ... Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars Labels may not be helpful for young children
I love Todd Parr's animated illustrations and charm. But after purchasing this book and reading it to my 2-year old, I wasn't as excited about this particular book. The labels "good" and "bad" are used in a way that it introduces ideas into a young child's mind. Like some of the examples were "good:light", "bad: the dark". I am trying to teach my daughter NOT to think of the dark as something bad and not to be afraid of! So that's not too helpful. Also, it has "monsters: bad" as well as "big hairy spiders: bad". We're trying to convince my daughter that monsters don't exist, not that they are "bad" and make her scared even more. The other labels in the book are funny, like "smelly feet: bad" and "hot chocolate with marshmallows: good".

I know Todd Parr just wanted to write a funny book for kids. But if your children are at the stage where they are scared of things or take things very literally, then you might want to choose a different book!

5-0 out of 5 stars Good Book
I am a teacher and I love these books. Todd Parr has outdone himself yet again in writing this book. I am sure that it will be a hit with my class of first graders.

5-0 out of 5 stars New fun, funky emergent reader series
I love the Todd Paar books! Neon-y colors and goofy, childlike art make these very simple books stand out from the crowd. Things that make you feel good include bubble baths, pets, hot chocolate with marshmallows, and bedtime stories. Things that make you feel bad include smelly feet, stinkbugs, worm stew, and monsters. The combination of things that are real and things that are silly will make you laugh and maybe take life a little less seriously. If you're a kid, there's an important self-esteem message in these books that the littlest kid can relate to. ... Read more

Let's get one thing straight right off the bat. Children lovebooks with flaps. They can't get enough of them. And this book has many, many flaps--over 60, in fact. Something else: children are crazy about Thomas the tank engine. Translation? Very young readers will happily spend a lot of time lifting and learning with this big, bright, colorful board book. Early learning concepts are reinforced on each page, as readers are encouraged to explore their knowledge of colors, numbers, sizes, everyday objects, and the alphabet. Thomas the tank engine travels through the pages, starting out early in the morning in the train shed and moving through the stations, dropping off parcels and passengers, and finally ending up in the freight yard with car after car full of important objects to be delivered, such as milk, doors, a piano, a kangaroo, and xylophones. Children should be allowed to roam freely over the pages of this book, making up their own stories related to the pictures they discover under the flaps. (Ages 2 and older) --Emilie Coulter ... 5-0 out of 5 stars ...
This is a flap book, 60 of them to be exact.

The popular Thomas the Tank Engine format is used to introduce children to the alphabet and their numbers. Each covers a flap that children can uncover and find a corresponding example. Other pages host more traditional flap objects (items that fit with the story), but the learning flaps have helped...associate letters with appropriate objects and recognize number representation with appropriate groupings.

The book is sturdy, which can't be said for all flap books. The typical Thomas story is here, as well as the colorful art that delights young readers.

This book is a winner. Watch them learn while they enjoy.

5-0 out of 5 stars flaps, flaps, and more flaps!
Pages with only one flap on them? Why waste the space? This book has flaps upon flaps upon flaps, so many that sometimes my two-year-old will reach for another one I've missed as I'm starting to turn the page. The last page alone is several minutes worth of flap-flipping fun. Even if your child isn't a huge Thomas fan, this is a fun book with lots of hidden things to find on each page. What's underneath will help teach colors and numbers and letters. And if they like Thomas, than they'll love this book. There's a logical progression from page to page if no actual story, but the fun in this one isn't reading out loud, it's finding flaps, lifting flaps, trying to remember what's under flaps. Highly recommended.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great book for all train fans!
We bought this book for our then two-year-old and it is still his favorite of all his books. The flaps are not as sturdy as they could be, he's torn a few and the Elmer's glue thing has been initiated, but all-in-all, it's a fabulous book and teaches counting, the alphabet, objects, shapes, etc. It's just such a cute book and is without all the negative things that the regular Thomas books has (i.e. name calling, put downs, etc.). This really isn't a Thomas book per se, but more of a basic let's go to the train yard and see what's going on type of book. I highly recommend it for the train lover in your family. It's one of the nicest books we own.

3-0 out of 5 stars Not Enough Thomas!
This is a very nice book, and my son absolutely loves the first page which shows the roundhouse and each character engine behind a flap. However, we have one complaint: there isn't enough Thomas! Some of the pages seem very disconnected from the Thomas theme. For example: the page showing the inside of Sir Topham Hat's house. I think we own just about every Thomas video on the market and I cannot recall ever seeing Sir Hat's house. My son does not make the connection, and tends to lose interest in the book about halfway through. However, he can spend 1/2 hour on the first page alone, so I guess that makes up for it.
