Book Description

Celebrate Mother's Day every day. This celebration of the bond between mothers and their babies can be shared at naptime or bedtimeor whenever it is time to say "I love you."

"Written in quatrains that break into couplets across each double page, this lullaby rhyme catalogues various animals and their offspring, describing each mother's testament of love." School Library Journal.

"The light-drenched, golden-toned pictures exert a quietly hypnotic effect on both reader and listener, aided by the lullaby's sonorous repetition of each mother animal's love poem to her baby." New York Times ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars As someone who battled infertility before having a child
this book was one of the most beautiful gifts I ever received. My daughter is now 2 1/2 years old and I still have a hard time making it to the end of the book without crying!

She loves the book as well - the illustrations are just beautiful, and the message is as timeless as a mother's love. I treasure this book, and have ordered several more as gifts to other friends I've made that have battled infertility and finally won.

5-0 out of 5 stars I Love You as Much
This book has not received the credit it deserves. I had never heard of it before my mother-in-law bought it for my son. It is an absolute MUST have book for new parents. The soft illustrations are beautiful. My 19 month old son loves this book. He seems to enjoy the rhyming words, and he loves to point at all of the animals. I can't read it to him without feeling that tremendous rush of motherly love. It can quickly make you forget all of the temper tantrums of the day. My husband and I both enjoy sharing this book with our little one.

5-0 out of 5 stars We love "I Love You As Much..."
This book is one of my son's favorites at bed time. He loves the pictures and likes it when I substitute other members of the family for "mommy" ("Said the daddy horse to his Alex..." or "...Now sleep little Al, while the stars shine above, Grandma loves you as much as a Grandma can love...". I ask him "Who is it tonight?" and he will name a family member (most often it is still mommy). Such a sweet book.

5-0 out of 5 stars A wonderful book
This is a wonderful book. I picked it up shortly after the birth of our first child. He is now 2 1/2 and this is easily one of his favorite books as well as mine. The pictures are simple and colorful. The range of animals is great. We call the geese in the book ducks at our house, as the one word is easy to change. It practically a nursery ryme. My son loves to point out and tell me wich animal we are looking at. I now always include this book as part of a baby shower gift.

5-0 out of 5 stars Our Favorite Bedtime Book!
This book is just awesome! My husband & I read this to our 2-1/2 yr old son every night before bed. We alternate reading the pages, with me always ending on the precious last page of (human)mother & baby. The illustrations are WONDERFUL and it is just such a sweet little book. We've been sharing this book with our son since he was less than 1 yr old. We all love it! ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars love serendipity collection
I have read the Serendipity books to my daughter when she was young, she had almost the entire collection, but being in the military and moving from place to place, we lost a lot of the collection. I found the Serendipity Collection, in hard bound, with 7 wonderful stories in it, purchased it, and now I read it to my grandchildren. Once again Serendipity is being read in my house again. My grandchildren, which are 6 and 5 yrs. old, love the stories. They turn the tv OFF when it is bedtime and grab the book and wait for me to come to read the stories to them. When a child will turn the Disney Channel off, for a story book reading, that alone says a lot about the book. My grandchildren love this book, and yes, I will be buying more and more of this series. The pictures in the book are so fantastic and life like, I really am glad to find this book, and the morals in the book are just what we try to teach our children and grandchildren. This book will be a joy to anyone that loves to read to children and watch their faces as they see the darling pictures. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellant for kids
Unfortuantely, Richard Scarry's work sometimes gets criticized as being anti-feminist. As a result, his classic book Busy, Busy, World (my favorite book as a child) is out of print. But, come on ladies, let's move on. Scarry is an extremely talented illustrator that kids love. My daughter insists we read this book every night. So save the feminist rantings for more appropriate targets, and leave Scarry's work alone.

5-0 out of 5 stars A Wonderful Book
When I was a little girl in the 1980's this was my most favorite book. Today I have a B.S. in Physics with a math minor and a Masters in Physics. Guess all that gender sterotyping didn't work!

This is a wonderful book. I would always look for lowly worm, he's so much better than where's waldo.

1-0 out of 5 stars Rigid Gender Roles
This book sends a powerful message to little girls about what they can and can't achieve. Unfortunately this book takes no note of the women's movement and all that women have achieved in the last fifty years. Each and every "job" shown in the book upholds rigid gender stereotypes. Every "nurse" is a female animal, every doctor a male animal, every construction worker is represented by a mail, every secretary by a female, right down the line without the slightest variation. It's really a pity Mr. Scary doesn't show a bit of enlightenment on these matters.

5-0 out of 5 stars Looking for Mr. Frumble
This was a cherished book of my childhood. A few years ago I was out looking for this book for myself. I discovered that the newer versions didn't have the story about a day in the life of Mr. Frumble. This was the highlight of the whole book for me. The one I had as a child has been lost. I figure the original had to be published somewhere between 1970 and 1985. If anyone has a way of getting a hold of this version I would be so thankful. My e-mail address is wjengr@flash.net. ... I bought this book for my daughter when she was just a few months old. Now that she is two she still periodically drags it out for me to read to her. 5-0 out of 5 stars Giggles galore
My son lights up and laughs when he sees this book. He loves the peekaboo concept, but giggles even harder when mommy gets the sound "wrong." If you are signing with your child, this book provides a great opportunity to reinforce the sign with the animal sound.

One note, my niece was scared of this book when she first got it. We think it was the was the eyes are drawn...but who knows!

Highly recommended.

4-0 out of 5 stars Strange Animals but Baby Loves It
My daughter is now 9 months old and peek-a-boo is her favorite game. She really likes this book. The flaps are big enough for her to lift by herself. Personally I find it a strange choice of animals for me to mimic their noises. E.g. "snort! goes the rhinocerous". I didn't realise there was a "Peek-a-moo" book which I'd probably prefer. My daughter doesn't seem to care though and loves this book. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Wonderful Book
My son picked out this book when he was 2 years old and we were both hooked. Over a year later it is still one of his favorites. Especially good book for vegan children about compassion for wild animals. I always keep a copy on hand to give as a gift.

5-0 out of 5 stars Girl Scouts loved it!
I used this book to help my Brownie Troop earn a badge. It was a wonderful introduction into discussion of helping animals. The exciting advenutre with its endearing characters is followed by a brief, but effective explanation of what children should and should not attempt with real wild animals. After hearing this story, the girls decided to take on a volunteer project at a local animal shelter. We are waiting for the next adventure of The Animal Rescue Club to see what it inspires.

5-0 out of 5 stars Introducing Reading
This book was reviewed in a graduate course in reading that I was taking. "I Went Walking" is a predictable print book. Such books are excellent in the very early stages of reading. Children memorize the book as you read it over and over and over again. Repetition the very thing our adult mind questions, children ask for repetition that they need. They learn to "read" you the book even when the book is not there. This stage of memorization is the first stage of reading. The child then moves to recognizing the words. For example, "Is this word 'cow'?" So both kindergarten teachers and parents can use this book. It is good to have a half dozen of these predictable print books at home. (Look up: Dorothy Butler's "My Brown Bear Barney".)

5-0 out of 5 stars This book is a treasure
I discovered "I Went Walking" when I taught first grade. It was a part of their literature series early in the year. I have no children of my own and I own both the board book and the paperback edition of this book because I love the illustrations and the rhythmical quality of the text. As someone who has professionally worked with children ages 2-12, I find that this kind of text is invaluable to early readers (ages 2-7). Children can easily pick up on the patterns in the sentences and begin developing many pre-reading skills (like being able to identify the left to right movement of written sentences). To find books that your young child will want to read over and over again is a jewel in their literacy development. To find books like this that you will want to read over and over again with your child is a treasure box of time shared!

4-0 out of 5 stars Good companion for Brown Bear, Brown Bear
This is just like the Brown Bear book. I love Julie Vivas' illustrations. Repetitive text makes it easy for your child to read with you (or to you!).

3-0 out of 5 stars Perfect for Big Book usage
I developed a lesson plan for 1st grade students using the big book version of this book. The "what is coming next" theme of the book is perfect for young children to form predictions.

5-0 out of 5 stars Get this AND "Brown Bear, Brown Bear, What Do You See"
Our son loves this book. In his shorthand he calls it "walking" and asks for it regularly when we sit down to read. I read a review that indicated this book is too similar to "Brown Bear, Brown Bear, etc." but I would disagree. Our son likes them both equally but they do not seem interchangeable to him (or to me for that matter). I would also echo the comment that the child character is appealingly ambiquous and could be either gender. The quality of the illustration and the story presented are delightful. ... Read more

Brian Jacques's 14th fantasy in the popular Redwall series exceedsexpectations in this suspenseful tale of good versus evil where the nefariousvermin seek to destroy the peace-loving mice, moles, shrews, and otters ofRedwall Abbey. The villainous Sawney Rath clan of rats, weasels, foxes, andferrets believe Deyna, an otter born of the community at Redwall, is theirTaggerung, a great warrior destined to lead them. Members of the Sawney Rathclan kidnap Deyna from his home as a young otter, but to no avail. As Deynagrows, he embarks upon a search for his true family at Redwall.

As ever, the master storyteller's language lends his swashbuckling adventures amysterious and magical quality, as well as a hint of the Old World as thecharacters address each other with thees and thous. Hearkeningback to medieval times, Jacques presents a tale of courageous warriors andgrotesque evildoers alike, each group journeying toward conflicting ends.Danger, fear, action, heroism--Taggerung is an intense page-turner withstartling plot twists that will keep readers on their toes. 5-0 out of 5 stars New Plot Theme Opens in Redwall Series-YES!
I've loved the Redwall books ever since first grade when I read Redwall for the first time. I've read it 16 times since, but that's not the point. When Taggerung came out, I was delighted, even more so when I actually read it. Much as I love the Redwall series, the later books' plots do get rather repetitive. I don't hold that against Mr. Jacques. The books are still good. But Taggerung was a completely new plot, standing apart from the others, but just as good; better than some. The plot twists and turns, with things happening that I didn't think would ever occur. I was frequently surprised by the outcome of a section, and the characters were all perfect, developed so they'd fit their station perfectly. The repetitive theme of "Martins sword and/or tapestry is lost, a young creature, male or female, goes out to find it, and invariably succeeds, killing the villain in the process" was gone, though some fragments remained, which was terrific. I happen to like that redundant theme. Anyway, if you like fantasy, you should definately read this book-oh, except you should read the other 13 books in chronological order first. That will make Taggerung better. Happy reading!

5-0 out of 5 stars The Latest and Greatest!
You may have read many reviews of "Taggerung" and seen the book jacket. Yet they tell you nothing about it. First of all, there's an otter named Deyna, who's born at Redwall. Meanwhile, in the clan of a warlord named Sawney Rath, Grissoul the Seer predicts that the Taggerung, a fabled chieftain, is going to be borne but is not going to be a vermin. Sawney and his clan go to a stream where Rillflag, Deyna's father, is performing an otter ritual on him. Sawney gets one of his vermin to kill Rillflag, then steals Deyna away. Deyna's position as Taggerung is threatened by Antigra. Antigra is a stoat who claims her son Gruven is Taggerung. Grissoul said that it was impossible for this to be before Deyna came along. They rename Deyna Tagg and train him to be the Taggerung. Sixteen seasons pass. Back at Redwall, the Abbey is again without a leader. Mhera the otter, who is really Deyna's sister, and her friends Gundil the Mole and Lady Cregga, uncover a riddle from Abbess Song. Basically, there are two plots that wind together. I'm not going to tell you anymore

4-0 out of 5 stars a fan who's read every book at least 3 times
A long but interesting book about an Redwall otter cub who's father was killed by a bowbeast. He was then taken as the Taggerung of a wandering Juska clan.He flees when the leader of the clan wants him to skin a living fox.

5-0 out of 5 stars A Solid Book
This is an awsome book. It is good to read with the series or even if you have read any other redwall novels(which I reccomend) it is still a good read. I love this author and own almost all of his novels.

5-0 out of 5 stars An excellent book
In Taggerung the other Deeyna is stolen by a gan of vermin beliving he is the next Taggerung. The leader of the vermin clan who will lead to vermin to victory in battle.

This book does not have a lot of figting in it. But it has great songs poemm and riddles. The charactes are kind and loveable. Denya reminds me when I used to be strong and fearless and had many fears.

The vilians in this book are the vile Swiny. This book is full of twist and turns. The part when Deeny fights the giant eel and stop the shrew sacrifice had my heart pounding.

Book Description

In nature, we often hear the sound of a bird or an animal before we can see it.Our new Hear and There Books have the same effect. After reading a short riddle, children are asked "What am I?" By pushing a color-coded button on the sound strip, they can hear the call of the bird or the animal. When they pull the tab on the right page, the animal is revealed. To find out more about the featured bird or animal, readers can lift the flap on the left-hand page for more detailed information on its habitat, its young, and its behavior.Written by a professional naturalist, these books are beautifully illustrated, fun to listen to, and filled with interesting facts!

This book introduces the calls of eight different North American birds that children can easily imitate. By reading the clues about each bird, hearing its call, and pulling the tab to see its colorful feathering, children are soon able to identify the sounds and appearance of the killdeer, American robin, barred old, eastern towhee, northern cardinal, black-capped chickadee, red-winged blackbird, and northern bobwhite. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars enchanting introduction to the night's mysterious animals
This is a fun, entertaining and informative introduction to nocturnal animals for city or country kids. Each of eight animals is given a double-page spread that includes a large pull-tab that reveals the animal in a natural setting; a large lift-the-flap that reveals the animal's identity, picture and several well-chosen paragraphs of interesting information; and a 2-3 second push-button recording with decent sound quality -- the sounds are authentic but a little fuzzy. The eight animals are the coyote, spring peeper, great horned owl, American toad, whippoorwill, field cricket, bullfrog and katydid -- one mammal, two birds, three amphibians and two insects.

This is the kind of book that excites children's interest in nature. It is thoughtful and beautiful.

5-0 out of 5 stars Night sounds
What a fun book! The night is such a fascinating time for children (and adults). The squeaks and squawks and hoots coming from the mysterious shadows can either draw you in, or cause you to run into the house and hide. Gallo's book leads a child to do the former. He starts us all on familiar ground - guessing - what was that noise (supplied by crisply recorded sounds in the book)? Pull the tag, and your question is answered.

What sets this book apart, though, is the information Gallo shares once you lift the flap. The more you know about a creature, the more you want to know, and he supplies us with the important, and often fascinating, tidbits about each animal covered. The writing belies the author's personal experience with the animals. For example, "The song of the whippoorwill is something you will never forget." You know he's heard this bird and knows what aspects about it to share in order to engage the young reader.

Using this information, the readers can then go out on that night, or the next morning, to seek out their nocturnal neighbors.

A good book to kick off the collection in your child's nature library!

5-0 out of 5 stars Fantastic reading experience
As an early childhood educator for 25 years, and a mother of nine children, I can say this is one of the best books I've experienced. The sights, sounds and activities keep my children enthralled. And even I enjoy learning the sounds that nature makes!

5-0 out of 5 stars Here is a great book to keep young kids mesmerized & reading
I am a book buyer for a community center with a large preschool program. This book is a hit! The kids can see the vivid colors bird (or other animal, reptile etc.), they can hear the sound it makes and the can read or have read to them a lot more fascinating and at least to me, unappreciated facts about nature. Their are many other activities to keep even the busiest child engaged, such as lift the flap or pull the tab. I am ordering the other title now as well as additional copies of this title and look forward to it as well. Congratulations to Mr.Gallo as well as to Ms.Lohstoeter for a book that is so beautifully written and illustrated! ... Read more

Is Froggy nervous about the first day of school? Well, just a little.First he has a terrible nightmare, dreaming that he almost misses the bus and shows up at school in his underwear. Then when he does wake up, he drops the milk just as he's about to pour some on his bowl of flies! Finally Froggy makes it out the door, leapfrogging the whole way, eager for all the challenges that await him in this comical, brightly illustrated tale of a daunting-but-rewarding first day at school.

Terrific for reading aloud, this is another winner in the Froggy series--including Froggy Gets Dressed, Froggy Learns to Swim, and Froggy Plays Soccer. Zip, zoop, zup are the sounds of Froggy getting dressed, and when he has to go somewhere, it's flop, flop, flop all the way. Our 5-year-old assistant reviewer had fun imitating Froggy and friends, shouting out "Frrrooggyy!" and "Wha-a-a-a-t?" at all the appropriate times. Kids will relate to the trials of the good-natured amphibian who makes lots of mistakes--he yells too loud, interrupts, and has trouble paying attention. With the support of his gentle teacher, however, he soon gets the hang of things. Before long, funny Froggy has the class, and the principal, laughing and singing along with him. All in all, he has a successful day--until he comes home to discover he's left his lunch box and cap at school! "Oh, Froggy. Will you ever learn?" said his mother. "That's why I'm going to school, Mom!" Froggy replies, with a big hop and a grin. (Ages 3 to 6) --Marianne Painter ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Froggy Goes to School
Froggy goes to School is about a young frog who goes to school for the first time. This book taught little kids not to be afraid to go to school and that school can be fun. The reading level is about 1st grade but is a good story to read to kids for a story time or bedtime. The book was funny and it was a joy to read and I hope every one has the chance to read this book in the future.

4-0 out of 5 stars Froggy Goes to School
Froggy is a young frog that is exited to do anything. I think Froggy goes to School is a great story for little kids in their toddler years (mostly for ages 3-7). This story is about a young frog and his first day of school. Froggy wakes up one morning and finds that he was running late for the bus and he don't want to miss his first day so he runs out the door and then when he gets on the bus his friends start to laugh at him because... Froggy forgot to get dressed he was on the bus in his boxers and then when he got to school his teacher called his name and only it was not his teacher it was his father calling him to get dressed school was starting soon. It was all a dream "bubble bubble, Toot toot, Chicken, Airplane, Soldier." To find out what this has to do with Froggy's first day of school read this story it's a Darn Tooting good one. And remember read 20 minutes a day. Thank you for reading this review. Have a good day.

4-0 out of 5 stars Froggy GoesTo School
The book Froggy Goes To School is a great childrens book. It is about the main character Froggy is having a dream that he showed up one day at school in his underwear. Then his is awoken by his dad. Froggy thought it was an actually day when it wasn't. After his dad wakes him up, he gets dressed and off to his first day of school he went.
If kids were to read this book, it would make them realize how much fun school really is. At school Froggy and his friends start to sing a song that goes a little something like this " Bubble bubble, toot toot. Chiken, Airplane, Soldier. " Then his teacher walks in and Froggy thinks he is going to get in trouble, but his principal starts to dance and sing right along with the rest of them. This book shows that going to school isn't as bad as kids make it out to be.
I would definitely recommend this book to any children who are not really interested in going to school.

5-0 out of 5 stars It's Time For School and Froggy's On His Way.....
It's Froggy's first day of school and this ever enthusiastic little amphibian can't wait. He gets dressed, eats his flies and milk, catches the school bus and has no trouble finding his very own desk with his very own name on it. He's so thrilled to be able to read his name, the first word, he realizes, that he can read, that he reads it again and again, louder and louder and even louder, until his teacher informs him that he needs to keep his voice down and that it's time to be quiet and pay attention. But it's hard for him to sit still and listen and take turns, so hard, in fact that while looking out the window and day dreaming, he falls off his chair. His teacher gently reminds him to stay in his seat and that he'll be able to sit on the floor at circle time. When circle time finally arrives, Froggy has his moment. While telling the class about how he learned to swim during the summer, he starts to sing and dance, laugh and hop and pretty soon the whole class is "swimming" right along with him, including Mr Mugwort, the principal..... No one captures the essence of a busy little pre-schooler, with places to go, people to see and things to do, like Jonathan London. His funny, joyful text, full of energy, motion and silly sound effects is wonderfully depicted in Frank Remkiewicz's bright, bold, expressive artwork. Together, they show a successful first day of school, not perfect, but realistic and reassuring to youngsters getting ready for the big step. This story is just one in a delightful series of firsts and your kids will love each and every one of them. Froggy Goes To School is a winner and a good way to help prepare your children for all the fun that's ahead when school begins.

5-0 out of 5 stars We love Froggy!
If you want a light-hearted look at the first day of school, this is the perfect book. Froggy, who as you might guess is a frog, is nervous about the first day of school. So nervous, in fact, that he lets his imagination carry him away. First he has the dreaded dream about running late on the first day of school, nearly missing the bus, and arriving only to realize he's running around in his underwear! When he really does get to school, he's thrilled to find his name tag on his table. "He liked his name. It was the first word he knew how to read. It was the only word he knew how to read. He read it aloud, louder and louder. Frrrooggyy." A little too loud, it turns out, as his teacher, Miss Witherspoon, kindly informs him that it's time to pay attention. Later, as he gazes out the window, he's so impressed by the falling leaves that he topples out of his chair. Miss Witherspoon tells him, "Kindly stay in your seat, dear. . .We'll sit on the floor at circle time." At circle time, Froggy shares how he learned how to swim over the summer. He soon has the whole class going through the motions -- even the principal joins in! When his parents ask about his first day of school, he proudly informs them that he taught the principal how to swim! As Frank Remkiewicz draws him, Froggy is just your average little boy who happens to be a frog. He may have webbed feet, but he covers them with sneakers. Froggy's face is a mirror of his emotions -- wide-eyed terror when he awakens from a bad dream, pink-tinged embarrassment when he notices the principal watching his "swimming lessons." ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Wonderful stories for children
I bought this book because I wanted to read to my unborn baby so that he could listen to my voice and reading. I love this book because the stories are written well and have wonderful pictures in them. They are perfect bedtime stories as they generally take 5-10 minutes to read. In addition, you get so many stories all in one book and it looks very nice sitting on a bookshelf with it's "storybook-like" presentation. Great buy!

5-0 out of 5 stars An excellent compilation of tales.
This is a nice addition to your nursery or reading room. The book contains many of the classic Disney tales wonderfully adapted for easy reading.

The book is well bound and of good quality. What I really like
is that it matches the other Disney books in size and style and so looks nice on the shelf.

Each story is accompanied by wonderful illustrations, and the stories have been beautifully shortened to make for perfect reading length to keep your youngsters attention.

Many of the "bad" details from movies such as bambi have been removed to keep the stories fun and uplifting.

Over all this is a great book, and will make a wonderful addition to your nursery.

4-0 out of 5 stars Good collection of stories & elegant presentation
Like other Disney hardbacks in this series (e.g., Disney's Christmas Stories, Disney's Storybook Collection), the book itself is a beautiful thing. Glossy, thicker paper with silver-edges complement wonderfully colorful pictures and large print stories.

The stories are shortened versions of many of the Disney classics (at least those that feature animals). The good side is that you get a sampling of many different stories. In addition, the stories are not too long that the youngest kids will fade out. However, as our daughter (2-1/2 years) has progressed, she is really enjoying longer, involved stories. She has several full-length Disney books and would rather read those than the shortened versions presented here.

So, this is a trade-off. If you treat this series as a collection of short-stories, you won't be disappointed (especially with the quality of the book itself). But, the shortened versions just aren't the same as the full-length stories.

5-0 out of 5 stars An Endearing Collection of Disney Favorites
This wonderful hardcover book tells the tales of Disney Classics such as Bambi, Lady and the Tramp, and The Lion King. With full color art on every page, it is a true treasure. I especially like the renditions of The Ugly Duckling and The Three Orphan Kittens, orginally written by Margaret Wise Brown. These stories have become bedtime favorites for my daughters, age 4 and 6. I even bought a copy for my nephew. ... Read more
