Book Description

Eye-catching illustrations, engaging text and delightful musical selections on the accompanying 70-minute CD lead children ages 8 to 12 (and parents, too!) on an exciting and educational tour through the instruments and music of the orchestra. Illustrated in exquisite and colorful detail with over 100 original drawings and photographs, this package is a fun and exciting musical journey for children. The engaging text is broken into three sections: an introduction to each instrument of the orchestra from the cello to the timpani, the stories of famous composers from Bach to Stravinsky and an explanation of different musical styles from Baroque to Modern. Each step of the way, children can listen to actual musical examples of what they are learning about. Young readers will hear the sound of an actual violin as they study the instrument and enjoy the playful tune of a Mozart minuet as they read about the composer's precocious exploits as a child. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Take This Book on Your Next Family Road Trip
We took Story of the Orchestra with us on a long road trip. Every hour or so, I would read a page and play the accompanying track on the CD player. My husband and I really enjoyed it, as did our 8-year-old. Our 13-year-old acted disinterested, but later I overheard him passing some of the information on to a friend. The book was entertaining, informative (even for my husband and I), and really helped pass the time. I think it would also be a good bedtime read--doing a page or two a night.

5-0 out of 5 stars The Story of the Orchestra
One of the most delightful, informative books about music for children (an adults too!). Lots of neat facts about the composers and fun facts about the instruments in the orchestra. The whimsical illustrations make the book come alive!!!!

5-0 out of 5 stars Lots of good information and a good book
The Story of the Orchestra is an excellent book for. Adults would probably know most of the information covered in the book, but still a good read. Covers famous composers and highlights of their lives, orchestra history, instruments used in orchestras and bands. All information is true, and is a good source if you are doing any reports on instruments. Context is good and fits childrens' appetites- the Viola is the "violin's big brother." Good book. I highly recommend it. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent activity ideas
I am a music therapy student and I used this book in constructing activities for music classes at a summer camp. This book had so many ideas for activities with music materials and ideas that were easily adaptable to fit the groups' needs. I especially love that few of these games really have a single winner, so everyone gets to participate and enjoy. I would highly recommend this for music therapists and educators as well as anyone else looking for this type of game for children.

5-0 out of 5 stars 101 Music Games for Children
Being a music educator, I purchased this book in hopes toenhance my music program. I have found it hard in the past to find musical games that young children can enjoy outside of musical chairs! With this book, I will never have that problem. To insure that my students have FUN learning music, we spend the last part of class playing one of these games. It is easy to do because this book provides you with a guide indicating age appropriateness, how long the game takes (5 min., 15 min., 30 min., etc.), specific number of players needed, and instruments and/or props if needed. Oh, did I mention that you don't have to be a kid to love these games? Well, you don't! There are games in here for those competitive music know-it-alls like myself! Did I mention that this book is great for planning parties? Forget the clown, it's usually a rip off anyway! Besides, music and parties go hand in hand! Last, it's a totally great book! ... ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Let your kids laugh!
We're constantly nagging our kids about what to do and what not to do; what to say and what not to say. If you've taught your children well enough they will be able to take this book with light humor and not turn it into "potty talk" and "bad behavior". Yes, it has a picture of a (cartoon) little boy's naked butt flying out of the tub. Is it dirty? No - it's quite accurate. I don't know about you but my kids don't wear bathing suits in the bathtub. And as far as stinky diaper change goes... that's our favorite song right now because we have a new baby in the house and his 4 year old big brother loves me to sing it when I'm changing the baby's diaper.
Afraid of the food fight song? Have a picnic outside and LET the kids have a food fight. What's the big deal? Let them be kids. Let yourself be a kid again.
Let the kids laugh a little. They have many years ahead of them to be grown up and politically correct.
OUR RATING: We think this book is GREAT!

5-0 out of 5 stars Ahhhh, A Kindred Book for Silly-Music-Loving Parents....
My household is a musical one - we can be heard making up songs all the time... one of our favorites is "Nature Girl" or "Nature Boy" depending whether my daughter or son is freshly out of the tub and running around only in "nature's finest"... the song "Nature Girl" is sung to the tune of "Baby Face".... And with all the energy of the era of THAT song!

I loved singing these songs on the first read - from "The Yogurt Flies Straight from My Brother" to the tune of "My Bonnie Lies Over the Ocean" to "I've Been Cleaning Up My Bedroom" to the tune of "I've Been Working on the Railroad" and "Stinky Stinky Diaper Change' to the tune of "Twinkle, Twinkle, Little Star."

Read, laugh, sing, laugh, hug your kids, laugh. You will all love this one!

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Book for those who love rhyming!
These poems were so cute, and the verses were terrific- Great for all ages groups.

5-0 out of 5 stars Wish I'd had this growing up!
I'm 33 years old, but I still remember trying to make up words to well-known tunes with my friends. Yes, what we came up with was often off-color, but *that's what kids like*! The reviewers who called this potty-humor are way too uptight in my opinion. Guess what folks, your kids are going to make this stuff up in school, but will not be able to share it with you, their stuffy old parents. I'd much rather share this natural, fun experience with my kids, and have great memories of it. We sit on the couch and sing at the top of our lungs, laugh 'til we ache and love every minute of it. If someone is unsure about the lyrics of this book, that's what the sample pages are for. If you can read them and not chuckle, then you have no business getting it. But I think most of you will laugh out loud and bring this delightful book into your homes.

5-0 out of 5 stars My kids think its the silliest book.
My kids love this book. They just laugh when we sing the songs ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Marvelous fun
This CD is splendid. Not only did the creators pick fun songs but they also had them sung by native speakers. The kids learn very quickly which country has what feel by the singer announcing who s/he is and from which country. Having the song in English after the original allows for everyone to sing along. Great intro to world music!

5-0 out of 5 stars A Fun Trip Around The World!!
Talk about multicultural! This music is a delight! Most of the songs are sung by children. Each singer introduces him or herself in English as well as their native language, then they sing a traditonal folk song! Each piece is short, the music is
very catchy! My son was 3 when we got this and after 1,00's of listening hours...at 6, he still loves it! He has learned the names of countries, continents as well as foreign words!
His teachers have borrowed it and it has brought many magical musical moments to many children!

5-0 out of 5 stars Children songs from all around the world
If you want to widen your children's horizons, this is the book for you. There are 43 songs from as many different countries, and almost as many different languages. Each song is sung in native and English language. With included maps, data on each country, various letters (Indian,Chinese,Arabic),and a sing-along cassette or CD it's not only fun but also something to learn from. 5-0 out of 5 stars Absolutely the best multiplication resource I've ever tried.
I purchased this for use with my third grade class and I have to say that we played it so much I had to replace the tape! This collection of songs was put together with a great deal of thought. Each melody is different, very musical and very catchy. NOT the usual rap sounds that I had expected to hear. As a matter of fact, the tunes are so catchy they almost have a hypnotic effect. Even adults find themselves singing the times tables after class. (Looks a bit crazy, I know!)

What I especially like about these songs is that they also teach skip counting. The chorus of every single song is actually skip counting. So, not only do students learn all of their timetables, they can count by 6's, 7's, even 12's with no problem! The use of skip counting makes this tape perfect for grade three students as a primer and for grade four students as a resource and review.

The flip side of the cassette allows for students to test themselves.

I have had many students tell me that they do well on their tests because of these songs! I often recommend this cassette kit for home use as a fun way to review. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Twinkle, Twinkle Little Star On All the People That I Love
My youngest son has suffered from severe asthma ever since he was an infant and he's almost 20 years old now. Some of my most painful memories are of watching him struggle with the torture of this disease when he was very small, and feeling the awful helplessness a parent feels when they have done all they can and still the suffering continues. When my son was at his sickest we would snuggle close and I would rub his back and quietly sing "Twinkle, Twinkle Little Star" to him in a slow, soothing voice. Sometimes I would need to sing it for a long while before he could finally relax enough to fall asleep. I had to learn all the verses besides the familiar one and I had to make up several additional ones, too! As he grew older I continued to sing it when things were bad. When he was sad or in pain or facing a tough time, he would cuddle up and ask for a back rub and "Twinkle Twinkle." I think he was 18 the last time I sang it and he was suffering heartbreak rather than asthma. Well, to get to the point, this book does complete justice to the special song that has meant so much in our lives. It has all of the verses and they are very beautiful. Sylvia Long's lovely illustrations show little animal children dressed in cute clothes like sweaters and blue jeans as they sit together on a country hill gazing up at the diamonds in the sky. Then we see each of the children go to their own homes where their loving parents cuddle them off to bed. They have such cute and colorful jammies on. The love between a parent and child shines throughout this little charmer just like a twinkling star. I love it! ... Read more

I ordered all Sara Jordan's addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division "unplugged" audio cd, they were excellent. They all have beautiful and soft musical tone that make them a joy to listen and very easy to remember. My child love them so much.

So I purchased this presidents rap audio cd, especially with another reviewer's strong recommentation, but it turned out to be very disappointing. The hash and annoying rap noise made us very unpleased to even finish to listen to it for 1 time.

5-0 out of 5 stars Amazing Resource for Teaching Kids About the Presidents!
I am not a music teacher. I teach 5th grade American History. Over the past few years, every single fifth grade student in my school has memorized this entire cassette which covers all of the Presidents! We do this bypreparing these songs as a "musical show" each year in honor ofPresidents' Day.

In my 20 years of teaching, this still proves to be themost exciting and well liked musical I have ever directed. What makes thisespecially interesting as a performance, is that each song is written inthe style of the historical period, so although the kids may be rappinginformation about the Presidents, they are singing in classical, gospel, light opera, rock and pop styles.

Well done! Our school year wouldn't bethe same without it! ... Read more

Book Description

In the streets and canals of Venice, Gabriella can hear nothing but sweet music. The drying laundry goes slap-slap, the church bells go ting-aling-ling, and the lire go jing-aling-ling. Soon, Gabriella is humming her way through town -- and everyone hears her song! Some find it sad, others smile when they hear it -- but none can forget the beautiful melody. Before long, a certain struggling composer is inspired by Gabriella's song -- and a beautiful symphony is born. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars EVERYTHING I WANT IN A BOOK FOR MY KIDS
This is such an enchanting, smart and magic little book. It has all the elements I look for in a book for the kids I read to. Through it kids can learn about another city (a quite a wonderful one at that), the power of music and the charm and love commen people of a town can provide for each other. I have read a lot of kids books and this one is really, really special.

5-0 out of 5 stars A whimsical musical
Candace Fleming's prose sings, and you cannot help but be transported to another place by Gisele Potter's charming illustrations.

5-0 out of 5 stars A creative look at how musical composition is inspired ...
The opening lines of this book hooked me: "Ah, Venice. The Piazza San Marco. The Grand Canal. St. Mark's Cathedral." This is the way to inspire a child to look outside his neighborhood! Gabriella's Song is a wonderful, richly textured book about how music is inspired and passed from person to person. My 3-year old, a music lover, enjoyed this book on the first read! ... Read more

Book Description

A compendium of favorite camp songs for all ages to enjoy.

Hello Muddah, Hello Fadduh,
Here I am at Camp Granada.
Camp is very entertaining.
And they say we’ll have some fun
if it stops raining.

The mosquitoes are out and biting, the rain’s coming down in buckets, and there’s poison ivy on the trail. We’re a long way from home and the food here stinks!

Camp wouldn’t be camp without troubles to share. But there are also new friends to make, adventurous trails to be climbed, and toasty evenings by the fire to enjoy (not to mention a fair bit of silliness).

Classic camp-song favorites—from “Rise and Shine” and “Found a Peanut” to “Kum Ba Yah”—and vibrant, folksy illustrations make this offering a musical walk through the campgrounds for generations to treasure.

5-0 out of 5 stars My 7 year old loves it!
My daughter and I were more than pleased with this math CD. I'm pleased with the music style -catchy tune AND understandable, no rap. I also like the fact that each addition is repeated. Although my daughter knows how to add she still uses her fingers sometimes, I have found that this has helped her to memorize facts more easily. The singing book that comes along is a big plus! I would also recommend the Multiplication unplugged because it teaches how to count by 2s,3s,etc. ... Read more
