5-0 out of 5 stars What great ideas!
As a K-6 computer teacher, I am always looking for new ideas to share with my students. This book has great computer ideas for kids, especially those in K, 1st, & 2nd grades. Best of all the project instructions can apply to any wordprocessing & painting program! While the book claims to be a "Kid's Computer Idea Book," parental assistance would be necessary to read the instructions. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars An Outstanding Resource for Teachers and Parents
Ms. Saltveit's book challenges its readers to think of new and creative ways to engage children and stimulate their learning throught the use of computers. She shows us that there are interactive activities that stretch children's imagination and creativity much further than a mere game could ever do.

5-0 out of 5 stars a most practical and fun way to approach computers
Ms. Saltveit's work is the most practical and fun approach to computer education that I have discovered. Although not intended as a teacher's aid, I actually like it just as much as "Hit Enter", which was designed for teachers. Both books have been a big hit at our school (Marymount, Paris). The books erase any feeling that computers are too intimidating or complex. I'm looking forward to her next work. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars The way things work: computers
I bought this book for my 12 year old to prepare for a computer literacy test he took to 'test out' of a required middle school course. While he uses computers a lot and I have for years, the illustrations helped both of us to better understand how computers work. I've suggested that our school purchase a set for the computer lab. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars The Funniest, the Wackiest, the Very Best
Genevieve Stamper's humor blew me beyond away. Dude, these jokes have been critical at the office! Being a seasoned punster, I know how to 'RAM it up' around business machines. Makes a great gift!!! You can't go 'ROM' with these gems!

5-0 out of 5 stars Genevieve Stamper Rocks This Boat!
Genevieve Stamper is by far the funniest and most entertaining person I have had the pleasure to read. AT first, I bought this book for my little brother, but I started reading it and I couldn't stop! I COULD NOT STOP! I was reading until late late at night, like until 3:00 am in the morning. It was so easy to deliver these jokes to my little brother that I had him up all night too. Sometimes, now when I'm sitting at my desk at work, I think of these jokes and just start cracking up. When I'm sad, all I have to do is pull it off my shelf. Thank you Genevieve Stamper for your wonderful book, it has certainly lightened my life considerably and I recommend it with my whole heart to all those out there who love to laugh, need to laugh, or are just fascinted by today's technology. Wit, intellegence, and goofiness all in one!

5-0 out of 5 stars Kids will LOVE this book!
Miss Stamper taps right into the heart (and funnybone) of her audience in this hilarious collection. Kids will latch right on to these jokes, and will tell them over and over again. This book will become an instant favorite of any young person growing up in this computerized age. ... Read more

Book Description

You’re a kid and you’ve just been assigned a research paper. A snap, right? Just jump on the Internet, snag a couple of sites, print out everything you find, copy some more stuff, organize a bit, add a title, print out your paper, and you’re finished or so many kids think.

Alas, it’s not quite that easy. Learning how to search for and verify sources, as well as organize, analyze, and take electronic notes is just the beginning. Citing sources and avoiding plagiarism is a must. And thinking, writing, editing, and coming up with the best format for your project – which just might be in some other form besides printed on paper – -is more of an art today than it has ever been in the long (but perhaps not always illustrious) history of homework.

So how can kids learn these research techniques with a technology twist? The first step is taking apart the process of producing a paper (or perhaps even a "paperless paper") and discussing and analyzing what works when a computer is involved. There are lots of books and pamphlets on how to write a research paper, but until now none have truly focused on how a computer can become a helpmate at every stage in the process.

Introducing Writing A Paperless Paper: A Student Guide to Electronic Study Skills by James G. Lengel, a professor at the College ofCommunication at Boston University. This 24-page booklet introduces, outlines, and explains in clear and simple terms a ten-step process for creating a research project in which the computer helps students plan, organize, research, take electronic notes, keep track of citations, brainstorm, write, edit and ultimately "publish" a paper. It isn’t just a guide to good Internet sites for homework assignments or a research guide that fails to show how helpful the computer can really be (such as those that instruct kids to copy information off the computer onto note cards only to type it back in later). This timely how-to booklet urges students to take advantage of all the computer has to offer. ... Read more

Book Description

Creating a comic is more than just coming up with a powerful villain or gruesome alien: it requires a lot of thought and planning about the storyline, weapons, props, modes of transportation, and setting (city, outer space, underwater, etc). Pulling all of this together may sound challenging, but with 3D Comic Design everything from how to create the story, characters, and text balloons, to page layout /design, adding special effects, and integrating 3D environments is clearly explained. There's even information on how to market your comic for publication! So if you've ever wanted to learn how to create and design comics using your own computer, this is the resource for you.

Adobe Photoshop 5.5 or higher is needed to complete all of the tutorials in the book.

1-0 out of 5 stars Another failed attempt at the subject by Mortier
Mortier already published one book on the subject. This time, he's given a bit more information on the creation of actual comics (rather than just creating figures) and how to add word balloons and such.

Sadly, he's still done very little that would help someone interested in using a computer to create comics. One peek at the cover should warn anyone off of the book: The art is amateurish in the extreme. The internal comics are of such poor quality that it's unbelievable that a publisher let them pass. And such a simple thing as leaving some white space between a word balloon outline and the letters within seems beyond Mortier (giving him away immediately as someone without any real experience or understanding of making good looking comics).

Again, I wonder why Mortier didn't team with a comics pro (or at least someone who had actually looked at comics with an artist's eye). Instead, he muddles through with his personal idea of what comics should be (thankfully, nothing published today matches this vision of comics... it would be laughed off the shelves).

I'm giving it one star since 1 and a half isn't possibly. It's definitely a step up from his earlier volume on comics, but a very small step. It's also cheaper, so you're not wasting as much money if you really want to give this book a look. ... Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars Very informative and easy to understand
This biography of Bill Gates had a lot of interesting facts about his entire life. It explained how he got started and how his company evolved. It also told about his family and his college years at Harvard. Many of his friends and associates are mentioned too. The book gave a little bit too much information at times but for the most part it was well-written. The author made Gates' work easy to understand even for someone who doesn't know much about computers. I believe this book would be great for a younger crowd to read but not for someone over 14 or 15. It is just on too low of a reading level. Since the book was written in 1997, it is somewhat outdated also. Other than that I liked the book a lot.

5-0 out of 5 stars A great book
[...] but the book was great. It had a lot of interesting info.

4-0 out of 5 stars A great book for young readers
I enjoyed this book, but would most likely not reccomend it to anyone over the age of ten or eleven. It was interesting but was published in 1997, therefore it is not 100% up to date.
