5-0 out of 5 stars Age Appropriate and Clear
Brimner's E-Mail is an age-appropriate and clear explanation of what e-mail is and how it works. That he challenges young readers with details from time to time is an asset to teachers wishing to see their studentsstretch. If I could give it 10 stars, I would.Brimner is one of theleading practitioners of books for young and emergent readers.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent for Grades 1 & 2
An excellent book for grades 1 and 2 that offers basic information for those youngsters just starting out with technology as well as more "scientific" meat for those wishing to explore what technologyhas to offer.Clear, concise, and entertainingly told.

5-0 out of 5 stars Clear and Concise
Our school system uses both of Brimner's technology books, E-Mail and The World Wide Web, in our first/second grade computer labs.Young readers (and their teachers) appreciate his clear, concise explanations, whileyoung researchers enjoy the connections he makes between the basic andscientific--and the many safe links he offers for exploration.Thisbalance between basic and scientific, always carefully explained, elevatesthe text from so many that could well fall into the category of"dumbing down" information. If you wish your young students togrow in their understanding of technology, then this is the book for them.

1-0 out of 5 stars Terrible Book
A True Book Email- Larry Dane Brimmer

Aspects of subject included What is the Web? How does it work? Explanation of terms. Using the Web.

Structure and organisation of text Short chapters on each topic 3-4pages each. Sections on good Web sites.

Ways in which information ispresented Text - Very large font- about 1cm Colourful presentation.Photographs and computer screen shots.

Helpful features Section on goodInternet sites to access.

Language / Potential Difficulties. The layoutand the general language of this book suggests that it is written for veryyoung children. It is however completely unsuitable for their use.Theauthor stumbles between the simple, the patronising and the ridiculouslytechnical.Any book which tells you that hyper links take you "almostlike magic" to another web page, should not then be discussinghypertext transfer protocol. The book is full of irrelevant and inappropriate information.Who cares that the protocol used on the Internetwas invented in a particle physics laboratoryin Switzerland called CERL? I doubt if many 6 year olds do.The following passage should help to showhow the patronisingly simple is followed with the unnecessarily technical."The address on the World Wide Web looks like a jumble ofletters."Nice and simple so far."This Jumble is called a URLwhich stands for Uniform Resource Locator ... The URL for NASA ishttp://spacelink.msfc.nasa.gov " This is a ridiculous juxtaposition ofthe simple and the scientific. The whole book is far to difficult for smallchildren, and too patronising and incomplete for adults or teenagers. It is not worth printing.

Implications for teaching. I would notlet this book step one page inside my classroom. ... Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars Cute little book - Literally!
This is a cute little book - literally. I did not look at the dimensions and was a little disappointed in the size. I wanted it for my reading center in the classroom. While it did not quite meet my expectations for its intended purpose, it is the perfect gift for a tech savvy pre-teen who is into net communication. There are several creative 'smileys' such as hamburger, crayon, cow - things that I have seen but had not quite 'gotten'.
Though it is intended for girls, I think that boys might get a kick out of checking it out too. ... Read more

2-0 out of 5 stars Those who need it most will find it simplisitic
Most of those now negatively described as hackers are in their teens. Relatively unskilled in both the computer and personal areas, they use simplistic means to break into systems and are often caught. Frequently as a result of bragging about their exploits. In vying for attention, they fail to understand that the computer equivalent of joyriding is a very serious crime. No one knows how much the latest outbreak of a computer virus cost, but some estimates are in the hundred of millions of dollars.
This book is written for teens and is designed to give them fair warning concerning the consequences to both themselves and society if they choose to follow the hacker path. The point is to get the reader to understand where the ethical and legal bounds of computer use are. In that sense, the point is good, but it is not effectively executed. Very little time is actually spent in the gray areas of computing. No one can dispute that disabling an air traffic control system is dangerous behavior. How about middle ground such as playing a joke on another by using their e-mail address without their knowledge? Such more likely situations are not adequately covered.
The purpose of this book is an honorable and necessary one. However, it is written more for the pre-teen age and more ink should have been used setting down the limits of hacking. The user sophisticated enough to be able to hack would find the explanations in this book too simplistic to be of interest.

4-0 out of 5 stars Interesting book
The book is to-the-point, it answered some of the questions that I had, it is a quick read for an adult. I recommend it for children.

4-0 out of 5 stars This is a great teaching tool...
This book is an excellent guide for my students. It explains many complex subjects in an simple manner. This book will stay a fundamental part of my schedule. I strongly recommend it for 4-6th graders, it provides a reference while keeping reading interesting. Way above any other book on this subject for this grade level. If you are unhappy with it, you are probably too old to be reading it in the first place.

1-0 out of 5 stars Nothing you need to know about the dangers of ....etc.
Less than 60 pages of big-type and useless photos. You can read this book in less than 10 minutes. This information is contained in probably thousands of web sites. Total waste of time and money. I was scammed (my fault not Amazon's), but I'm getting my money back - don't spend yours. ... Read more
