5-0 out of 5 stars Wonderful book!
It is easy to read with very beautiful colors. I have three Ewe students from Togo and am hard pressed to find books to reflect their culture. I'm sure that the Ewe in Ghana and Togo are related and my students will be able see some of their culture reflected in the book. Thanks Deborah!

5-0 out of 5 stars Kente Cloth
A warm multicultural book, that gives an enlightining look at the traditional hand weaving of the Kente Cloth. The book is an exciting celebration of culture by the Ashante people of Ghana and the Ewe of Ghana and Togo. The steady rhythum of rhyming text along with its bright and colorful illustrations are sure to attract the attention of young readers. As an educator I would use this book to introduce colors and weaving activities to young children. The use of rhyme is a great springboard for strenghthening students phonemic awarness. I would give this book 5 stars. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars For the mathematician in all of us...!
Well, maybe for SOME of us! The book presents a fascinating history of...counting. Simple, you say? You just start at 1 and keep going. This is true only since recent history. What led up to this "modern" math? Take a look! ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Celebrate the 50 States
This book has some pretty interesting geography facts. I liked the fact that Amelia Earhart was born in Kansas. A browser's delight of United States geography facts in a captivating picture book format. It has excellent color illustrations, and would recommend this one to the 2nd grade through the 4th grade levels, as well as the teachers. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars The best book ever
This is the grossest book I have ever read and you get all the gross facts with it and this is a good book because you get gross facts. It tells you about the battlefield and how they almost never wash there blades, they were to be decorative not to cut off limbs. This kind of book is great for book shares. Try reading other books in this series and once you start, you can't stop.

5-0 out of 5 stars Really yucky and cool
This picturebook is aimed at primary elementary students, and shows the gory life of a 16th century medical staff. It has many yucky details, which the kids love, and is interesting for comparisons of how much the medicine advanced since that age. The facial expressions are real fun, especially all the teeth-clenching of patients faced with primitive medical tools (which seem to inflict more pain than cure). ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Discover Ancient Greece
This book from Shuter's four-book series on ancient Greece concentrates on their many great discoveries, inventions, and ideas. A simple map of ancient Greece is included along with a short timeline dating from the first city-states in 800 B.C. to the time when Greece was taken over by the Romans in 146 B.C. She describes the importance of ideas to the ancient Greeks. Such things that the Greeks thought about, which are featured in the book, are how Greek society should be organized, the importance of learning, writing, childcare, medical care, cleanliness, the ablility to control water, measurement, math, and lost discoveries. She also explains how we know these things about the ancient Greeks. A table of contents covers the major features and makes for easy navigation for students. There are also more quotes from famous Greek writers on the topics discussed on the page. At the end there is an appended glossary of boldfaced words from the text, an index, and a list of more books to read on the topic. The simple text, skillfully drawn illustrations, and clear photographs together make this book an outstanding resource for classrooms studying ancient Greece. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Black Diamond
My book is about baseball. I read tha the baseball starte at 1820's, and when it start only white player weard allow to play it but the blaack players could not play baseball with white players because they weard been raises with them. A lot of cuban people weard playing with whith people with no problem. The white people hate the black people because they weard all different colors. The black people made a team that was call the Negro Baseball League, and there was the American Baseball League. the black people wanted to play in the white league they had to do a lot of stuff to get into the white leage wich was realy hard. They had to go alldoway to cuba to change their names and their social security and everything else they had to do to get to the american league. The book is preaty sad and happy at the same time.

4-0 out of 5 stars Baseball, America, and racism.
The story of race relations in American history is one of lost opportunity. This concise history of the Negro Baseball Leagues for young adult readers illustrates this basic point. The book discusses the names, dates, and circumstances of the major figures and events of the flip side of American baseball history. Legendary names such as Josh Gibson, "Cool Papa" Bell, and Satchel Page are just a few of the remarkable players who made important contributions to the game. Among others, they played for teams with names such as The Homestead Grays, The St. Louis Stars, and The Kansas City Monarchs. The book also tells the story of owners and managers, such names as Negro National League founder Rube Foster and the tough as nails woman owner of the Newark Eagles, Effa Manley spring to mind. The book also briefly explains how the infamous Jim Crow tradition brought about the Negro Baseball saga. In 1947, major league baseball was sucessfully integrated and that spelled the doom of the Negro Baseball leagues. The text includes an ample number of photographs. To assist younger readers, and for easy reference purposes, a player profile and time line section is provided at the back of the book. Underlying the historical text, there is the theme that segregated baseball mirrored the nagging problem of racism in America. A sense of fair play and even-handed justice demands that talent, skill, and just plain style should be celebrated, regardless of race. To do otherwise cheats everybody of a rewarding experience. Imagine if the great players of the Negro Baseball Leagues had the chance to play (with or against) the great players of the major leagues. Consider the void created by lost opportunity. ;-) ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Looking for Excellent Hmong Literature?
If you are an elememtary or middle scool teacher with a population of Hmong children, or if you are looking for literature that treats a "difficult" subject in a sensitive way this book is for you. It is beautifully illustrated, with pictures of a Hmong story cloth and the story is written by a Hmong woman. It is one of those picture books that makes wonderful reading and viewing for adults as well as children. Top notch!

5-0 out of 5 stars a powerful book, beautifully illustrated and well-written
This is one of my favorite children's books. It tells the story of the Hmong people through the eyes of a child who lived in Laos during the Vietnam War, lost her father, escaped to Thailand and eventually came to America as a refugee. One of my third grade Hmong students declared it "THE BEST BOOK I'VE EVER READ! " I would have to agree. ... Read more
