5-0 out of 5 stars It helps Children Understand God
My daughter got this book as a gift for Christmas. It was the best thing she received! A child has such a hard time understanding God, and what he means to our lives. This book explained so much to her. As she progressed through it, I could see the changes in her both mental and emotional. Some of the best chapters and segments were: Can we see God?; What does God want from us?; What should we do when we don't understand God?; Had God really lived forever?; Does God want me to be punished. The list could go on and on, but there is just not enough room to explain how much this will help your child. Some of the other chapters include wonderful segments and descriptions of: Creation, Sin, Bible History, Jesus, Salvation, Worship, Prayer, Church, Forgiveness, Evangelism, and Heaven.

5-0 out of 5 stars Every Christian Home Should Own One!
It's has always been my hope that parents start building a strong understanding of theological truths in the lives of their children. This book is a great tool to do just that! I do believe that every home which owns and uses this book would benefit. An additional note: Although this book is targeted for the younger elementary age group, it can also be used with new believers who need to get acquainted with the basics. In this post-Christian era we live in, it's amazing how many adults don't know any of the content found in this childrens book. ... Read more

It's hard enough to find a good survey of world religions for adults, let alone for children, so when I found One World, Many Religions, I was stunned. With a sensitivity for detail and an easy style, Mary Pope Osborne delivers a valuable introduction to all of the world's major religions: Judaism, Christianity, Islam, Hinduism, Buddhism, Confucianism and Taoism. The balanced yet brief treatment; vibrant photographs depicting children around the world engaged in worship; the glossary, map and timeline all work to provide a concise, informative and engrossing introduction to the variety of religions everywhere. ... There are many other books that offer deeper insight and breadth of perspective. This book is weak on historical information, shaky on doctrinal accuracy, and misses many of the distinctives of each tradition.

5-0 out of 5 stars A book on religions for people age 9-90+
Osborne presents a well illustrated book on world religions that is apparently for children but is more than adequate for most adults. Sentences are brief. Words are not overwhelming - a glossary defines new expressions. The book can be a starting point for satisfying curiosity about great world religions. It is also a great help in reminding oneself about the basics. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Great resource for Sunday School
I've been a Sunday School teacher for 17 years and have accumulated a lot of resources--this book is among the best. I've come back to it again and again to find creative, interactive ways to tell familiar Bible stories. The walk-through drama in which children experience the last week of Jesus' life has become an annual event for our Sunday School. We've also enjoyed telling stories with food, balloons, projected pictures on the wall, etc. The book also gives suggestions for other Bible stories that would adapt well to the story-telling technique described. I highly recommend this book.

4-0 out of 5 stars Very good book.
I was so impressed with this book that I rearranged the content of my children's church so that I could include a story from it! A lot of the stories require so many materials that you have to go shopping in order to do them, however, most materials can be used with other stories later. I hesitated buying this book because I thought it would require a lot of craftiness or dressing up that I wouldn't be able to pull off, but it's all pretty simple to do. It's a good way to bring the Bible to life with grade school kids.

5-0 out of 5 stars Tell your Bible Stories in a creative, clever new way!
This is a fresh, creative book filled with storytelling ideas and techniques for Sunday school, family events, children's sermons, and church gatherings. As a member of our Children's Ministry Committee, I find this book especially helpful in creating new and fun programs. We do lots of storytelling at our church and found some ideas particularly fun; for example, we liked the Mystery Containers and Rainbow of Colors. We used the Rainbow of Colors storytelling technique to tell the story of Noah at an intergenerational event. The story got them moving and laughing as well as hearing an old story told in a fun, dynamic new way. These stories get the children moving, dancing, exploring, and interacting. The storytelling ideas are adaptable to other bible stories and this book gives you many suggestions. This is one of my personal favorite books. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars I don't know a better children's book!
Characters in the book share their name for God and in the end they all learn that God's specific name is not so important as their being respectful of each other's choices for God's name. Children and adults should enjoy this book. The illustrations are wonderful and the story is simple, yet very meaningful. This would be a great gift to share with friends of different faiths: a good way to let someone know that you are not prejudiced agianst their religious belief system...

5-0 out of 5 stars A special gift for a godchild
I have four godchildren and have given each of them a copy of this book. The pictures are lovely, the story is poignant and the message is loving and true. I highly recommend this book and it will surely become a favorite for the child/godchild in your life.

5-0 out of 5 stars Naming God
I used this book for a Children's Sermon at our church on Mother's day. The children couldn't get close enough when I began reading. Most of the adults in the congregation were as entranced as the children.
Beautifully written and richly illustrated this is a book to share with family and friends.
What an excellent way to help children learn (and remind adults) that there are countless names for God.

5-0 out of 5 stars A must!
Children are open and honest about what they believe. This is a wonderful book allowing us -- especially adults -- to see the many ways that God is revealed in this world. Through this beautifully illustrated and well-written children's book, we are able to see the "origins" of our different names for God. This is both a book of inclusion and a book of discovery. I have used this book with children and with adults -- as children discover and adults re-discover the way God is revealed in our world. Enjoy!

5-0 out of 5 stars a wonderful gift for a christening
I have four godchildren and have given them each a copy of this wonderful book at their christening. I highly recommend it as it is a welcome gift and celebrates all good things in relation to God. The pictures are lovely, the story is thoughtful and it is a meaningful way to introduce a child to religion. It embraces many emotions! ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Great for exploring popular American faiths for young people
This book provides a rich, marvelous understanding of diverse American cultures and spirituality, but is not truly a World Religions intro as such. In other words, rather than define and demonstrate the way diverse groups worship throughout the world, this book serves as a thoughtful, respectful survey of accessible religions that your own neighbors may be worshipping, in case one might be searching oneself. And, no surprise, most of the religions covered are Christian ones.

By the way, Amazon has the title wrong. It's "My FRIENDS' Beliefs" -- plural, more than one friend -- and that's crucial to the openminded tone this book sets. What separates this book from many other intro-to-world-religions-for-kids types is the depth that this book seeks and reaches. It introduces you to 12 American teens and their ways of worship, including the history of each religion and its most famous leaders. Each chapter provides a wealth of interesting and relevant information on beliefs, holidays, ceremonies... and the personal reasons for his or her faith, which makes the book meaningful.

As mentioned, there is a heavy emphasis on Christianity and, specifically, the religions covered are: Judiasm, Hinduism, Buddhism, Islam, Roman Catholics, Greek Orthodox, Episcopalians, Luterhans, Presbyterians, Methodists, Baptists, Pentecostals, and brief info on other smaller groups (all Christian as well). No Sikhism, Jainism, Shintoism, Taoism, Zoroastrianism or other less well-known (in the US) faith system. For inclusion of those as a brief introduction, I recommend a slim book for young people called "Religions Explained" by Anita Ganeri, ISBN 080504874X. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Original and sound answer to common bibliosceptical problem
How can we see light from stars billions away if the Bible says that creation occurred in six consecutive normal days?

Dr Russell Humphreys, a nuclear physicist working with Sandia National Laboratories in Albuquerque, New Mexico, provides a fascinating answer. He has developed a new cosmology which uses the same theoretical foundation as all modern cosmologies including the 'big-bang': Einstein's theory of general relativity. Dr Humphreys changes one assumption in the 'big bang' cosmology, and that is that matter in the universe is unbounded, that is, all space is completely filled with matter. This is *not* how non-experts normally imagine the cosmos. The 'big bang' is based on another assumption called the *cosmological principle*, which states that an observer's view of the universe depends neither on the direction in which he looks nor on his location. He replaces those assumptions with another -- a universe whose matter is bounded, that is, matter surrounded by empty space for some distance beyond the matter. That is how non-experts normally imagine the cosmos, but *not* how expert 'big bang' cosmologists picture it.

The importance of General relativity is that it teaches us that time is not the same everywhere in this universe, but instead can run at very different rates. Indeed, Einstein's theory of general relativity indicates that the rate at which time passes depends on the strength of the surrounding gravitational field. With certain initial conditions at the Creation, a literal day or two could have passed on the Earth while from 'the light's point of view', it had millions or even billions of years to get here. So the entire universe was created in six ordinary Earth-rotation days, 6,000 years ago by earth clocks. Such things are possible as a consequence of general relativity, which simply is a description of the universe as valid as we are able to currently determine.

So far, his cosmological model has withstood all sceptical attacks to date -- he has firmly refuted Rossite attacks in the CEN Technical Journal, and the attacks and his answers are posted on the Answers in Genesis site. Many of these bibliosceptics don't even realise the unproven *philosophical assumption* behind the 'big bang', and fail to realise that it's equally physically valid to use Dr Humphreys' alternative assumption.

Dr Humphreys' book is written at a layman's level, but has a technical appendix. Dr Humphreys is humble enough not to believe that his model is necessarily the final word, but that Christians should base their faith on the Bible, which is the final Word of One who was there and knows everything.

4-0 out of 5 stars Something to think about: A "White-Hole" Cosmology
I've been discussing this book with my Cosmology professor. I have to admit that this book is not universally accepted in the scientific arena, and there are obvious reasons for that--Humphreys attempts to prove that cosmological data can fit the Biblical interpretation of a young universe made only 6,000 years ago. However, it has to be admitted that Humphreys presents some things to at least seriously consider.

The goal of the book is the help resolve the apparent contradiction of starlight and a young universe. If light can only travel at a set speed, then how can we see stars made only 6,000 years ago when it should take a lot longer for us to see them?

Humphreys proposed that the theory of general relativity can allow for time dilation to slow down earth time in relation to the rest of creation, so that while the earth might have been created in six literal earth days, the universe was expanding for thousands of years. Time dilation is supported by Einstein's theory of general relativity. According to the theory of relativity, time slows down as objects approach the speed of light.

Regardless of whether or not the speed of light can change, as proposed by George(?) Setterfield, Russell Humphrey's main objection to the Big Bang theory is that it is based on certain presuppositions, like whether the universe is bounded, which is fair to say.

Other scientists argue that the Big Bang cosmology predicts that clock rates change only about 10% to the furthest galaxies. However, the young-universe models do not follow the standard Big Bang(black hole) predictions to begin with. The question may not be "How much has the speed of light changed?" but "How fast has time changed?" Also, at the point of singularity, it is impossible to say whether or not the same laws of physics would apply.

The book has been under a lot of discussion, and suggests an interesting idea, though time will tell if the theory can hold. It should be noted that the author has worked for Sandia National Laboratories in nuclear physics, geophysics, pulsed power research, theoretical atomic and nuclear physics, and the Particle Beam Fusion Project. My cosmology professor's complaint was that if the speed of light changed and time slowed down, then that might present problems with atomic structure, but it seems as though this author should know a lot about that from working in atomic and nuclear physics, considering the author's credentials.

I can think of a few Bible verses that could support his application of General Relativity to creation. My only complaint was that I prefer not to interpret Genesis as saying that the earth is at the center of the universe, as Humphrey's idea suggests--though he does admit that his interpretation of how Creation might have unfolded is purely speculation.

Anyway, his ideas on GR certainly leaves room for other possibilities. The book is a quick reading that definitely gives the reader some interesting things to think about.

4-0 out of 5 stars Intriguing Theory
I don't have a Ph.D in physics so I can't make a relevant argument for or against the theory proposed by Dr. Humphreys, but what I will say is that this is a very intriguing theory.

The book is short and Dr. Humphreys only goes over the basics of his theory. Only get this book if you are interested in hearing a new theory about the beginning of the universe. You will not get thorough arguments against other theories as that does not seem to be the objective of the book.

5-0 out of 5 stars Short, but expands the possibilities of a biblical creation
The scope of this book is different from other famous Creationist books, such as Jonathan Safarti's "Refuting Evolution" (highly reccomend both 1 & 2). It seeks to present a model of creation consistent with a literal translation, and at the same time harmonize scientific observations pointing to a universe older than a couple thousands of years old.

In response to a review entitled "Pathetic!": This person does not seem to understand the relativity of time, and hence cannot connect an old universe with a young earth - showing not only a lack of understanding of physics but also of what Humphreys is stating.

The book is short, and understandably so, for it caters toward the average reader and not a scientific community. It gives an overview, as well as brief mathematic formulas to support the assertion of a young Earth and old universe, thereby upholding the literal interpretation of Genesis chapter 1. The writing is concise and easy to understand, providing diagrams to better visualize scientific concepts that are hard to fathom on paper.

One aspect that makes this book a valuable read, even if you reject Dr. Humphreys' model, is how it explains how some famous evolution/creationist models are fallacious, illuminating some theological as well as scientific problems with popular theories including the "gap theory."

Even as Humphreys himself admits, the book is not meant to be the beginning and end of the Creationist debate, but to merely provide a model that can hold up to biblical scrutiny (as well as scientific concepts such as red shifts). For what the book sets out to accomplish, it does so admirably.

A must read for those interested creationism.

5-0 out of 5 stars Mind expanding!
Dr. Humphreys presents an alternative view of the creation of the universe that definately expanded my horizons. Of course, orthodox evolutionists will dismiss it out of hand so that nothing upsets their house of cards. But for those with an open mind, and a willingness to challenge the high priests of science who demand nothing less than submissiveness, the book offers fascinting possibilities. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars A great devotional Bible for very young children
One of my goals with all four of my children is to instill in them the desire to have a daily quiet time with the Lord, and so I do a short devotion with each of them before bedtime. I am using the Baby Bible Storybook with my 22-month-old. It is a hand-me-down from Big Sister, and has served us well through the years. With bright, eye-catching illustrations, simple text, hand-motions, and an easy-to-mimic prayer at the end of each story, it is perfect as a devotional Bible for very young children. My older daughter used it until she was about 3 1/2.

4-0 out of 5 stars My 2-yr old discovered this book and loves it!
We received this book in a big box of hand-me-down baby & toddler books. I just threw it in my kids' book drawer, never thinking we would read it, but my 2-yr old daughter found it and now she reads it every night, flipping through to her favorite stories. We're not a religious family, not even church-goers, but now that our daughter is so interested in learning about baby Jesus and the other stories in this book, we may try to bring religion - or at least some form of spirituality - into our lives a little more. At the least, the stories are good morality tales, on the 2-yr old level. A few of them are a bit harsh for a toddler (the lions were going to eat Daniel; Paul wanted to hurt God's people) but I tone those down when I read them. Also, it's a very sturdy & well constructed book, better than the typical board book - our copy is very old and is in good shape - and the illustrations are adorable. If you're looking for a first Bible, this is a great one!

5-0 out of 5 stars My daughter loves it!!
My 19 mo. old daughter loves this book. She picks it up and brings it to me to read to her. The illustrations are colorful and captivating. Believe it or not, my daughter learned to count to 4 using this (we count the characters).

I highly recommend this book.

3-0 out of 5 stars Adequate, but the best I could find.
Many of the stories are too complex for babies and toddlers. For our 20 month-old we use only 4 of the 20 (or so) because of difficult content. Most of the actions mean you can't have the child sitting on your lap while reading the story. The actions, though, do help keep the child's attention. The pictures are simple enough for toddlers and babies, for adult tastes they definitely are too cutsey. The pages are very durable and withstand being handled by little hands. All in all, I'm still looking for a *good* Bible storybook.

5-0 out of 5 stars It's never too early to start teaching your baby about Jesus
I love this book and so does my 5 mo. old baby! The pictures are very bright and colorful. The content is perfectly designed for babies and on up to toddlers. I give this book as a baby gift to all our friends and family. It makes a wonderful gift. I have given over 25 away in the last two years. Everyone loves them . On the front page there is an area for you to write who the bible is to and who it is from along with the date. I think that this makes the baby bible very special. ... Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars If you want a meaningless devotional time, buy this
Maybe that was a little too harsh. But I started using this book with my son a couple of weeks ago. I am always looking for good devotional books, and when I saw this had some good reviews and had enough material for a year, I decided to give it a try.

It is short all right -- maybe three or four sentences on each page. And my son always wants to know the story about the picture. But there is no story about the picture, because what is on the page doesn't relate.

When finding devotional material, I want something that will hold my son's interest while teaching him Biblical concepts. Because there is no story, it doesn't really hold his interest, and the content is so simplified that it is basically meaningless. After reading it, I often don't see anything we could possibly discuss!

If you want to have an empty ritual every day that you call "devotions," this may be a great book for you and your child to use. But if you want something that will both interest and teach your child, I would recommend looking elsewhere.

5-0 out of 5 stars excellent for toddler / prechoolers
I wasn't going to write a review but I couldn't help notice someone gave it a really bad review stating that it had to many pictures and pages. Well it's a DAILY DEVOTIONAL BIBLE just as it says on the cover. Its wonderful for those parents who want to start leading their children to GOD as soon as possible, a little bit each day. It has easy to understand text, short like my son's attention span too. This way he gets the story before he wonders off to his toy cars. Plus it has plenty of pictures which appeal to small children who learn by seeing![...]

4-0 out of 5 stars Wonderful book for everyone
My mom purchased this book for my little sister who is now six. They read the daily entry together. My mom had a lot of good things to say about the book so I looked at it (I am 18). It is a wonderful little book! All of the entries are really convicting and pertaining to your daily struggles in life. Because it is written for kids it is also easier to understand right away as well as faster to read on a busy day. I bought a copy for my friend when she graduated and hope I get one when I graduate too! A really good book for even adults and teens.

1-0 out of 5 stars And he can have all of me, but none of my $17.99...
Even tho abridged, this book is still about 300 pages too long. What 4 to 8 year old do you know that can sit through a 400 page book, let alone a book about religion!

Now don't get me wrong Phil, I know this is your cash cow. After all, what moral-minded parent wouldn't buy this book for their child? But really, next time try writing something with a few less illustrations and a few more polysyllabic words. Instead of making money off Jesus and his religion, take a chance on something a little less cookie cutter. Trust me -- that's what Jesus really wants.

5-0 out of 5 stars INSTRUCTION ABOUT HUMILITY
"At that time the disciples came to Jesus, saying, "Who then is greatest in the kingdom of heaven?" And Jesus called a little child to Him, set him in the midst of them, and said, "Assuredly, I say to you, unless you are converted and become as little children, you will by no means enter the kingdom of heaven. Therefore whoever humbles himself as this little child is the greatest in the kingdom of heaven. And whoever receives one little child like this in My name receives Me." THE HOLY BIBLE Matthew 18:1-5.

______________________________________________________________________________

Wow! JESUS WANTS ALL OF ME is something like I would want to write for kids! It is perfect--size, length of words, illustrations, layout, and concluded with a short verse from HOLY scripture! You and your child will love this! My daughter is crazy over it! She loves to carry it around with her and loves me to read it to her!

We must instill in the hearts of our children the love of God "which passes all understanding" NOW. There is no time to waste.

Let's fulfill our responsibilities as parents: "Train up a child in the way he should go, and when he is old he will not depart from it." THE HOLY BIBLE Proverbs 22:6. JESUS WANTS ALL OF ME is a great aid for parents to do just that! ___________________________________________________________________________________

Here is a sample; it is bookmarked in my copy: (Hmmmmm...)

"SHARE!

God doesn't care how good I act on the outside. He doesn't care how many nice things I have. He just wants me to be like Jesus. He doesn't want me to keep my life closed up like a bottle with the top on. He wants me to take the top off and pour myself out. He wants me to share myself." [pretty picture of grapes and a glass of wine/grape juice.] "He who believes in me...out of his heart will flow rivers of living water."

5-0 out of 5 stars You must read this!
This book is simply an essential tool in guiding you or your teen to a stronger level of self-respect, self-love, and a true relationship with Christ. I highly recommend it as a tool to engage in dialogue at home as well as at church or school. It easily bridges the gap between any age group, and proves that parents can, indeed, understand!

5-0 out of 5 stars WHERE WAS "THE REAL DEAL" WHEN MY OLDEST WAS IN HER TEENS ??
I BOUGHT ONE COPY OF "THE REAL DEAL" WITH THE INTENT OF READING IT AND SHARING IT WITH MY THREE DAUGHTERS. BUT BEFORE I COULD FINISH CHAPTER 1, I REALIZED THAT I MUST RUSH IT INTO THE HANDS OF MY OLDEST DAUGHTER, PROMPTO !!!

SO THIS REVIEW HAS TO REMAIN A 'REVIEW-IN-PROGRESS', BUT ONLY FOR A SHORT SPAN OF TIME. I AM PURCHASING 12 COPIES SO I CAN MARK UP ONE, GIVE 2 TO MY YOUNGER DAUGHTERS, AND GIVE THE REST TO OTHERS WHO ARE TRAVELLING THE BUMPY ROADS OF TEEN RAISING.

FROM THE INTRODUCTION THROUGH CHAPTER 1, I FELT AS IF MRS. COOK WAS SITTING IN MY LIVING ROOM CHATTING WITH ME AND MY DAUGHTERS. THIS WOULD BE A GREAT BOOK FOR A YOUTH RETREAT OR WEEK-TO-WEEK SEMINAR. A SECOND PRINTING CAN'T BE BUT FAR OFF.

I CAN HARDLY WAIT TO FINISH "THE REAL DEAL" !!! ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Great resource, teaching tool & reference
This is one of those books where the kids version is better than the adults version! It breaks down the Bible, into sections and sub-sections. For example, it introduces the 1st 5 books of the Old Testament as the Books of the Law, explains why they are called that, the main points, the main people, an outline of what happens in each chapter- and then it goes a wonderful step further, and links in known historical information, a map of 'Where It All Happened', and other pertinent information about the world at that time. The same format is followed for each Book of the Bible. Within each book there are small illustrations & summaries of the main events in each chapter, which are surprisingly well done- not off-putting to an adult, very accessible to a child. The reference materials at the end- a good dictionary of words that one doesn't often see outside of the Bible!, Bible geography, good time lines of the Old & New Testaments, and an amazing 16 pages of good color pictures tucked away at the end make this book a must!

There are bits that are clearly written for children, and the section on 'Becoming God's Child' may or may not fit exactly with your view of things, but don't be put off by those: this is a great tool for getting to grips with a lot of information.

5-0 out of 5 stars THE BEST!
I've just started out in my walk with Christ so Childrens books have been VERY helpfull in my study. Out of the 10 books this is by far THE BEST!

5-0 out of 5 stars Just what my kids need!
I teach Sunday School to third graders, most of whom are more likely to associate Genesis with computer games rather than with the Bible. Our church gives every third grader a Bible -- an adult Bible, with very little study helps or annotations. This book is exactly what my third graders need to help them begin to understand and appreciate God's Word. Although it's written in language the kids can understand, it doesn't talk down to them.

My daughter, who has both the NIV and NIrV Kids' Study Bible, also loves this book.

I liked this book so much, I bought the adult version for myself. I also purchased the reproducible timelines, maps, etc. These will be a tremendous help in both my personal Bible study and my Sunday School class. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Story of the Book that Changed the World
I used this book with my kids during our overview of the Old Testament when they were all in elementary school. We needed a book, suitable for children, that would quickly illuminate the origins of the text we were reading. Even my first grader could read and understand it. We pulled it out again this year when we studied the Renaissance & Reformation, and the children still found it interesting and informative. I know of no more concise and accessible explanation for the Bible's origins and how it came to us in its present form. Richly (though informally) illustrated, the book is laid out in little "mini articles," which the kids found easy to read and remember. Although meant for children, I would even use it to help adults understand where the Bible came from and how it was transmitted to us.

4-0 out of 5 stars How the Bible Came to Us
A multi-faceted subject handled well for its intended audience as well as older readers unfamiliar with the topic. The addition of subject/event tracking helps to clarify the content as well as the reason for the process. Especially helpful are the inclusion of contemporary efforts to make the scripture accessible to all who care to read them. The art work is interesting and the text is well written. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Simply the best story Bible available for children and adult
My wife and I argue over who get's to read this to our kids. It is that good. I would recommend this Bible to anyone who wants a clear, plain language understanding of the Bible. It is great for new Christians or people who have questions about the Bible but are intimidated to read it. It will motivate your kids to ask questions and motivate you to read the Bible. You will not wrong with this one! Enjoy!

5-0 out of 5 stars Lifetime of writing her book
Mrs. Vos's daughter gives her mother a most beautiful compliment in writing of her mother's passion: creating a Biblically accurate children's story Bible. She observes, that, as a child, she took almost no notice of her mother's personally-committed habit of ascending the steps of their home to an upstairs area where she could research and write... what has become one of the best Bible story books written.

Our family used it as a three year Bible course. We learned so much from her added notes which weaves the stories to the time line of Israelite history. Catherine F. Vos' chronologically written stories gave a point of reference from which our son could create a timeline of pictures and Bible references.

5-0 out of 5 stars Very good book with very few pictures.
We have used this book as a part of our family worship time for several years. The more I see of what else is offered for children's "bibles" the more I appreciate this book.

5-0 out of 5 stars For yourself and your kids!
My husband was given this story Bible back in 1961 when he was baptised as an infant. We are still reading it to our 4 children today. It has been glued and reglued, taped, etc. to hold together this beautiful text. I was ecstatic to discover it's been recently republished. I have encouraged many parents to purchase it as it is an excellent, easy to read Bible for the whole family! Parents themselves don't often model personal devotions because so much of the Bible is difficult to understand. Read this every night and I guarantee you'll understand your own Bible much better, and have the best basic biblical overview possible! Vos doesn't water down the Bible stories - even some of the gory details - but in a respectful, careful manner she presents nearly every bible story. We LOVE this book!

5-0 out of 5 stars Keeps children interested, chronological, accurate
My children love this Bible. The stories come alive and they are easily understandable. The stories are biblically accurate and center around Christ, even in the Old Testament stories. I highly recommend this Bible for giving your kids a well-rounded knowledge of the Bible. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Hamliton rises to the challenge
In this collection of tales, creation stories from around the world are retold by Virginia Hamilton. The book is beautifully illustrated with explanations included (for adults) about the choice of creation stories, and the categories they fall into. Reading this reminded me of the books of Greek myths I once read as a child. However, nothing I've ever seen compares to the beauty found within this collection's pages. Easily concerned parents beware. These stories haven't been rendered politically correct, nor have they been altered for modern sensibilities. In many tales, women are usually the catalysts of any problems with the world and violence occurs with steady regularity. Do not let this put you off. Though different, this is a text that deserves to be seen by all children from all walks of life.

5-0 out of 5 stars Mind-broadening!
I'm puzzled as to why IN THE BEGINNING is listed by Amazon as a children's book! Perhaps a child would enjoy the astounding pictures, but it would be only a very advanced child who could read or understand the impact of this examination of the religious beliefs of other cultures. It's the perfect book for cultural anthropology students or mythology buffs. It would certainly tweak the curiosity of readers who wonder about the origins of religion.
I found it a book that led me into more exploration into a fascinating field.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great stories, great artwork!
This is the perfect book to introduce readers of all ages to the creation myths of different religons and cultures. In these days when the teaching of evolution and modern cosmology are controversial, this book provides valuable perspective on the way different people have accounted for the earth and its inhabitants. It should be required reading for all public school administrators, and would be a valuable addition to any school (or home) library. ... Read more

Book Description

Every child develops an image of God by age 5, say spiritual experts. This simple, beautiful book will help you and your child explore spirituality together for the first time.

For people of all faiths, all backgrounds. Based on the award-winning picture book In God's Name.

Much has been written about the importance of reading simple, beautiful books to babies and preschoolers to stimulate brain development. But perhaps even more important, what you read begins to shape your child's world, and creates the images that will remain with him or her throughout life.

We read books to our children about letters, numbers, shapes, colors and safety, but do we give their minds the early food they need to think about life's bigger questions? As spiritual development experts now tell us, each child develops an image of God by age 5, with or without religious instruction. What is God's Name? takes you and your child on an imaginative journey designed to help you open not only your child's mind, but your child's heart and soul as well. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Cute, Necessary Book
I was amazed to learn that most kids have an image of GOD by the age of five, whether or not they're taught spirituality/religion by their parents. That being said, a book like this is a great way to 'jumpstart' spirituality in your child's life. It also teaches tolerance of others, being that the book shows people of different backgrounds.

Overall, this book wasn't overly dramatic at all and the illustrations were rather pretty.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Bridal Shower Present
This little gem of a book is the perfect bridal shower present. Every baby should have it read to them over and over again. As the little one learns to turn pages (that's what the thick pages of a board book are for), he/she will also begin to hear and see that the world is a spiritual place with a lot of different spiritual expressions in it. That's a lot of value for about eight bucks.

5-0 out of 5 stars Beautifully illustrated and written
I have enjoyed this book with my five year old and 20 month old. The illustrations are bright and bold and the book describes the origins of God's name. It is clear, understandable and inspirational for young and old alike. I highly recommend this as a godparent gift in board book for younger children and hardback for older children. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars WOWWWEEE!!!
This version of bible is easy to understand. It's told in a way that suits the age group it's designated for. Some other bibles I've tried reading are complicated, but this one is interesting, and teaches at the same time. My friend got one for her birthday, and once I picked it up, I couldn't put it back down! I haven't had the chance to get mine yet, but I will...soon.

5-0 out of 5 stars Ahhh! It fills a great void!
My middle girl is in those niggling pre-teen years and she is a smart, discerning, inquisitive girl. Her New Adventure bible is terrific in many ways and could indeed serve her for some time to come. In fact, we weren't looking for a new bible, because she has such a good, age appropriate one. But its funny how the Lord works in mysterious ways.

I own a Woman of Faith bible and it has brightened my world (no, I haven't been to a WOF conference; they haven't hit my neck of the woods yet). Its a study bible, in a mega-boosted devotional bible sort of way. I cannot praise it enough, and I am always sticking my nose it in. Well, so has this particular daughter (I think the schnazzy purple did her in). Lo and behold, this Young Women of Faith bible came on the market. Its weekly study themes directly coincide with my bible! And, the little butterfly icons throughout her bible means that it's particular annotation of a passage coincides with the same annotation in my bible. Of course, its not a word for word, but a paraphrased annotation, distilled for a young girl.

The best thing about these bibles (both mom's and daughter's): its heavy on the joyful message of the Lord verus the fire/brimstone fearing of the Lord. This so soothes the soul, because we want for our sources to inspire us to love the Lord, not oblige our souls to Him for fear of Hell. These are happy, meaty, joyful, encouraging bibles.

Finally, we can read, study, compare, and do devotionals together. The family that prays together, stays together. It is another tool to role model good womanly behavior. Both bibles do much to clarify cultural contexts of women in that time, which helps disassociate from any erroneous conclusion that women be subservient today. That is important in raising strong women, rooted in their faith and capable in this era.

Now, if there were only a little Promise Keeper's bible for my son for bonding with his father and our Father....c'mon, Zondervan! ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Every Child a Light by Pope John Paul II
This book has many memorable pictures of Pope John Paul II with
children of many nationalities and backgrounds. The photography
is in spectacular color. There are memorable sayings by the Pontiff; namely, "Young people are the hope for the future."
The photography shows the Pontiff mixing with the crowds at a time
when he still had considerable mobility and good health. The work
will appeal to a wide constituency of followers throughout the
world. The pictures alone are worth the price of the volume.

5-0 out of 5 stars John Paul II Every Child A Light
Not only did the photographs in this magnificent production touch the heart, but the words of the Holy Father are emblazoned in our minds for all to see for years to come. His holiness shows his tenderness and love of children in the words and pictures, revealing his compassion, humor, and child-like love.

4-0 out of 5 stars Beautiful photography elevates this book
"Every Child a Light: The Pope's Message to Young People" combines excellent full-color photographs with excerpts from the discourses of Pope John Paul II. The book is edited by Jerome M. Vereb. This book is full of visual appeal. The photographs, which show John Paul interacting with children of various ages, are crisp and full of life. The Pope is effectively depicted as a caring and joyful man.

The book is beautifully designed. The Pope's word's are arranged as poetry on the pages; this nicely complements the photos. The text is drawn from the Pope's global ministry.

The content of the words themselves is often rather bland and vague. Controversial topics are generally avoided. Sometimes the messages are a bit mixed. In one excerpt, for example, the Pope seems to be taking a multifaith tone, praising children for offering each other "a hand / with no regard for color, / social condition, or religion." Elsewhere he seems more theologically exclusive. For example, he claims that "a generous 'yes' to Christian faith / is the purest sense of the fullness of life"--a statement which I'm sure those of other faiths would dispute!

Still, many of the statements are relevant and inspirational to young people of any faith or culture. He tells young people, "The future belongs to you; / for you are the leaders of tomorrow" and challenges them to be "men and women of high principles / and hopes." But the book as a whole is, in my judgment, mainly relevant for Catholic children and adults. ... Read more
