One April morning Thomas and his sister Lucy are gathering eggs from the hens and discussing Easter. But Lucy falls ill with scarlet fever before she gets a chance to tell him about Easter eggs. Thomas is sent to the local candy shop merchants, John and Mary, while his sister is quarantined. One day, when Thomas is lonely and frightened about Lucy, Mary gives him a chocolate Easter egg and tells him the story of Jesus's resurrection.

"But why do we have Easter eggs?" Thomas asked.

Mary explained. "Just as a chick breaks out of an egg, so had Jesus broken free of the tomb of death. Easter eggs remind us that Jesus conquered death and gives us eternal life."

Written by the author/illustrator team of Lori Walburg and James Bernardin, and featuring the same setting and characters from their bestselling The Legend of the Candy Cane, this story reveals the significance of Easter, which lies far beyond the wholesale gobbling of chocolate eggs and jelly beans. (Ages 6 to 9) --Emilie Coulter ... Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars Endearing tale of Easter
In this historical fiction story about Easter, a young man learns the legend of the Easter egg and about his faith in Jesus.

Thomas asks his sister about the legend of the Easter egg while they do their chores. Unfortunately she doesn't get a chance to answer him before she gets Scarlet Fever. While staying with friends, he asks about Easter eggs. Thomas finds his answer and prays for the first time.

This endearing story is a great way to explain some of the symbols used to celebrate Easter to young children. A great book to add to the other collectable legend stories like The Legend of the Candy Cane. ... Read more

Book Description

For thousands of years the stories in the Bible have been passed on from generation to generation. This new retelling of many well-loved stories from the Old and New Testament is ideal for reading aloud to children today.

The lively narrative brings characters and scenes vividly to life while remaining true to the meaning of the original text. Children will enjoy the imaginative use of language and rhythm, and the variety of pace and mood, which give fresh appeal to these timeless tales.

Bob Hartman is uniquely qualified to write this book. He divides his time between entertaining children as a storyteller for the Pittsburgh Children's Museum and being pastor of a church. In The Lion Storyteller Bible he has created a book that will be treasured by children of all ages. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars A Good Place to Start
I have looked at a few "toddlers`" or "first" bibles, but this one best suits our present needs. At seven and five years of age, active, and bilingual at present, my boys enjoy read-aloud books: only if interesting, and in case of the youngest, only with pictures.

Twenty-five stories each from the new and old testaments are retold in a format which lends itself to reading aloud. These well-crafted versions entertain, yet stay true to their messages, the most prominent of which is that , "God is love." Veteran storyteller Bob Hartman uses simple language, (which early readers will appreciate,) but never talks down to his audience. Sweetly illustrated in color and across two pages, both tales and pictures are easy to share. This children`s bible is sure to be a family favorite for many years. Sunday school teachers will also find this a welcome addition to their repertoire.

5-0 out of 5 stars Bible made fun for kids
I really enjoyed The Lion Storyteller Bible for the simple, fun and colourful way it portrays Christ and his teachings. Some children's bibles I've come across tends to be rather wordy and plods along. Not so The Lion. It is written in a quick, fun style that would appeal to children, firing immediately their imagination of the message God intends for us all. I strongly recommend it to those who are interested in teaching children God's messages. ... Read more

Book Description

Another great Adventure in Odyssey is underway. After the roller-coaster ride of the Novacom saga, "Friends, Family, Countrymen" is a return to "Normal" life in Odyssey (depending of course on how you define "normal"). In this album, our favorite characters learn lessons about serving God, making tough choices, obedience and more. And, we meet the newest citizens of Odyssey (the Washingtons)--a fun-loving family that harkens back to the Barclay clan Odyssey fans have missed for so many years. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Back to Relative Normal
With the Novacom situation now behind them, the residence of Odyssey are eager to get back to their normal lives. Not that normal ever describes anything they do. Connie and Mitch are trying to make up for lost time in their relationship, but what's the cost to others? And Mitch is offered a job that he quite possibly can't refuse. We meet the Washingtons, who are being set up to become the next major family in Odyssey (and I can't wait). We get to experience some of the early days of the Revolutionary War from a slightly different perspective thanks to a newly designed Imagination Station. And Tom's wife is getting all riled up about something, but she can't remember what it is. Meanwhile, Aubrey's friend Seth has moved to Odyssey and we discover that being different can have advantages.

While I enjoyed the Novacom storyline, it was nice to get back to a calmer Odyssey. And, frankly, some of the themes of the episodes were a challenge to me. The stories are fun and kids will love listening to them over and over again.

With over 500 episodes under their belt, it's nice to see that there seems to be plenty of life left in the show. If they keep coming up with great stuff like this, I'll be enjoying the show for many more years to come. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars A Timeless Treasure
I was recently given a 1957 edition of this book...mine does not have colorful pages to look at for my 2, 4, and 8 year olds BUT I have never had such quality devotional time with my children. I am a Bible scholar/teacher and it is apparent in this devotional that the author not only understands his audience but also loves the subject matter...the doctrines of our faith! These are NOT BIBLE STORIES...they are BIBLE DOCTRINAL TEACHING for CHILDREN. Even my four year old participates and is able to easiliy comprehend the difficult concepts such as ONLY ONE GOD / THE TRINITY...WHERE DID GOD COME FROM?...IF WE CANNOT SEE GOD, HOW CAN WE KNOW HE IS ALIVE?...THE ORIGIN OF SIN...WHO IS SATAN?...WHAT HAPPENS WHEN WE ASK JESUS TO BE OUR SAVIOR...WHAT IF WE SIN AFTER WE ARE SAVED?...HOW DO WE KNOW THE BIBLE IS TRUE? Some of these questions most adult believers have difficulties answering...but ask my kids, they learned them fom this book...it is truly a TIMELESS TREASURE from Jehovah!

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent
When you are dealing with children under 10, you have to limit time on what you are teaching, or risk losing their attention. This wonderful devotional is perfect for getting the bible doctorine across to 5-10 year olds in their language. It takes no more that 10-20 minutes, including bible verses. Each devotion gives bible verses, explanations, a short story about it, and a prayer and hymm. Absolutley wonderful, my children and I look foward to bible time each evening. I wish there were more like it.

5-0 out of 5 stars Children understand God and faith
Devotions is a series of small chapters (most are three pages) that teach children everything they need to know to have faith and why. They learn God's love for us, Jesus' mission and forgiveness by the cross. They are taught characteristic behaviors for Christian living. Simple examples at the end of each chapter illustrate the chapter's point and make it easy for a child to apply the teaching to his own life. Devotions offers scriptural references to support the chapter's teaching. It provides questions at the end of the chapter to reinforce the lesson. My children have delighted in their learning. It is sensible to them.....not a tremendous unfathomable mystery. My nine-year-old at times will take the lead and read to his younger siblings. A very simplistic perspective encourages young learners! ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars A Book to Share
This is a wonderful little book for children and their parents to share. It introduces the notion of the divine and its place in the world through images that are unique and enjoyable. 5-0 out of 5 stars beautifully written and illustrated
perfect for children's faith formation programs and there is an workbook published for adults who work with children to use, although I could not find it on this website

5-0 out of 5 stars Great book for those exploring the meaning of God
Broaching the subject of "God" and answering children's questions about God is not easy. "God's Paintbrush" is a wonderful springboard for exploring and discussing the question of God and is written in a way that will stimulate thinking about God and our relationship to God by both children and adults.

The book uses non-sectarian and non-sexist language which many readers will probably appreciate, since so many books refer to God as a "He."

Rather than defining God, the author helps children explore God and their relationship to God through moments in their own lives. "I wonder if God has a big lap to curl up in just like Mom's and strong arms like Dad's to lift me up and catch me when I fall."

When a child looses a tooth in order to make room for a new one, he wonders if the trees mind losing their leaves in the fall or if the snow minds melting to make room for spring..."I think God paints the leaves bright colors in the fall and makes the sun warm in spring because God likes changes. God likes the world to grow."

The book is interactive as each page ends with questions directly related to the text that help children explore God and their relationship to God.

The illustrations are colorful and comforting, showing people from different races.

I highly recommend "God's Paintbrush," especially for those who are looking to explore the meaning of God with their children. It will engage and stimulate the religious imagination of children and help them to think of God as a special friend. ... Read more

Book Description

Losing Stinks!Even losing a toy or a game feels rotten. But when a friend moves away, a parent leaves home during a divorce, or a loved one dies, sometimes it seems as if the hurt will never go away. So how is it possible that loss can be an important opportunity?

Rabbi Marc Gellman and Monsignor Thomas Hartman -- also known as television and radio's God Squad -- draw on years of counseling experience to suggest universal truths that will help those of any religion to live and grow through losses large and small. With surprising good humor, they show how people have responded with courage and even heroism to the curveballs life has thrown them. They've also selected comforting readings from favorite prose and poetry, offering wise words, healing laughter, or time for quiet reflections.

This heartening book reminds us of the many ways that we can keep hope alive when the going gets rough. With a remarkable balance of common sense and profound insight, two award-winning authors skillfully show how, in a most extraordinary way, our bumps and bruises make us whole.

5-0 out of 5 stars Spark Great Conversation in Your Home!
My 7 and 9 year-old sons love this book. It talks to them about real experiences they have to deal with every day in real life such as losing stuff, games, and confidence. I had thought we would skip the parts that do not apply to our experiences, such as losing a body part or a loved one, but they want to hear it all. We read this book aloud and it generates great family conversation. The boys kept having me renew the library copy I had, so I had to get my own.

5-0 out of 5 stars Lost and Found: A Kid's Book for Living Through Loss
Talks about the good that can counter balance loss in life. It starts with minor loss (things), then pets, friends, (moving, etc.), then death. It says it is good for someone as young as 8 years old, but mine would not listen to the first chapter. Is has a "lecturing" quality to someone less informed. It also makes some good points. Contains black and white illustrations. I would recommend this one to students from the 4th grade up, as well as teachers and parents. ... Read more

Leo and Diane Dillon have collaborated on 40 illustrated books and won a shelfful of major awards for their artistic work, including two Caldecott Medals. No surprise, then, that this book is a feast for the eyes--but it's remarkable even by their exalted standards. The text, printed in large, clear capitals along the bottom of the pages, consists simply of the famous verses from Ecclesiastes: "To every thing there is a season, and a time to every purpose under the heaven: A time to be born, and a time to die...."Each phrase is illustrated by one of 16 panels, and each panel stems from the artistic style of a different culture, from Egyptian tomb friezes, to Japanese harvest scenes, to Aboriginal bark paintings, to Greek vase paintings. The rich, sophisticated illustrations may appeal more to parents than to their children--and verses like "a time to kill" may be too much for the very young--but there could be no more beautiful vehicle for the old wisdom that we have to know, expect, and live with both the good and the bad that life will inevitably bring us. At the end of the book the authors provide interesting information on the style and the art history behind each illustration. (Click to see a sample spread. 3-0 out of 5 stars Beautiful Illustrations of 'To Everything there is a Season'
(Library of Congress 97-35124(I borrowed it from the public library to read). In their appendix,The Dillons,(Leo & Diane)have listed verses in the bible's Old Testament's Ecclesiastes according to their preferences on which ethnic groups or countries builds up,who laughs, who embraces, who speaks, who loves by the order in which they place the countries in the biblical verses. It begins with Ireland(to everthing there is a season, and a time to every purpose under the heaven followed by Egypt,Japan,Mexico,Greece,India,Europe,North America,Ethiopia,Thailand,China,Russia,Australia, the Far North(Siberia to Greenland),and ends with the Middle East WITH THE verses a time of war & a time of peace). And of course a picture of the planet earth with "one generation....but the earth abides forever)".I'm glad they put it where children would not be interested in reading the small print..they have bigger pictures on page 1-30,and most wouldn't understand Egypt associate with dying or Mexico associated with killing,or Greece associated with a time to break down ,India on a time to weep or Europe on a time to mourn.I would give it to an adult vs a child as a gift.

5-0 out of 5 stars Wonderful Book for All Ages
This book is a treasure of representative illustrations of artistic styles from a wide variety of cultures. Although the text comes from a specific time and culture, it demonstrates that its message is applicable to all members of the human family. I have made this a standard gift for friends and family with new children. The colorful pictures are stimulating and captivating for the very young who have not yet learned to read, while the timeless text provides a new level for children to experience the book as they get older. As an adult, I find this book to be something I enjoy over and over for myself and to give as a gift.

2-0 out of 5 stars Misconceived multiculturalism
Althought the illustrations are beautiful, I think it's deeply problematic to take Judeo-Christian theology and then attribute it to other cultures. At least 2/3 of the illustrations represent times, places, and peoples who wouldn't have been familiar with the text being illustrated. And, since the explanatory notes in the back are so thin, no real appreciation of the other cultures being invoked is achieved. Mixtec human sacrifice as an illustration of "A time to kill, and a time to heal?" Just how will this promote cross-cultural understanding/respect? There's clearly enough historical/cultural/national diversity among people who have read/believed in these verses from Ecclesiastes to produce a celebration of difference within a common faith. That would have been a much more responsible approach. As it is, this book is either an assertion of the universality of sectarian beliefs or just an attempt by some talented illustrators to show that they can imitate a wide variety of artistic styles. For an example of someone (writing for elementary school aged children) who handles multiculturalism (within a Judaic tradition) well, see Barbara Goldin's _Journeys with Elijah_. And if you just want a picture book of these verses, consider Barner's To Everything.

5-0 out of 5 stars Beautiful, multicultural illustrations. Many uses.
I picked up this book at a small local book shop and immediately had to have it! The Biblical theme makes it posible to use in Sunday school classes, however, the art work and idea of dealing with change makes it appropriate for school use, too. I teach education courses and plan to use it in my Art in the Classroom course as well as Children's Literature. Children could make up their own stories to go with the illustrations which come from original art of many ages and countries. All the illustrations are explained and identifed in the last pages of the book. I have given away my copy to someone who saw the potential for use in the classroom because she was dealing with seasons. This book is for anyone who enjoys outstanding picture books, not just children.

5-0 out of 5 stars A absolute treasure to own and to give!
Ecclesiastes comes to life in the stunning multi-cultural illustrations of the verses. It should be on your gift-giving list for young AND old alike. The cultural portrayals are so pure students will enjoy naming them as the pictures are shared. The information about the illustrations in the back adds a special touch. ... Read more

Book Description

"Women are the backbone of the church," says an old African-American aphorism. Since the 1660s, women have made up the majority of members in almost all American religious groups. They have provided essential financial and social support and worked tirelessly in the background of church-based activities. Throughout American history, women have raised money for churches and synagogues, embroidered altar clothes, taught Sunday school, prepared parish meals, and sung in the choir. They have educated their children in their beliefs and taken them to their places of worship. Yet it is primarily men who have historically occupied the high rungs of church hierarchy and made the important decisions affecting their congregations. Ann Braude examines the central role of women in American religious history, focusing on their efforts to achieve greater recognition and equal rights, their recent admission to religious leadership, and the emergence of feminist theology in the late 20th century. Colonist Margaret Winthrop, African-American preacher Jarena Lee, Christian Science founder Mary Baker Eddy, and Zionist leader Henrietta Szold are among the women discussed in these pages who have made major contributions to the spiritual and material growth of religious organizations in America.

Religion in American Life explores the evolution, character, and dynamics of organized religion in America from 1500 to the present day. Written by distinguished religious historians, these books weave together the varying stories that compose the religious fabric of the United States, from Puritanism to alternative religious practices. Primary source material coupled with handsome illustrations and lucid text make these books essential in any exploration of America's diverse nature. Each book includes a chronology, suggestions for further reading, and index. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars May be for Young Adults, but excellent for everyone
I didn't realize this book was categorized as "Young Adult" since I found it in the new books section of my library. Braude has done a stellar job of representing multiple aspects of the complex issue of women and american religion. While she takes a chronological approach to the subject, Braude still manages to represent all religions, including alternative and native american religions on which much "primary scholarship" does not exist (and therefore they usually get excluded in overview books like this one). I gained a real understanding of how various movements surrounding issues of immigration and within the various Protestant sects emerged in the larger context of American History. This book is one of a lengthy series on Religion in America, and I plan on seeking out the others to see if the quality is as good. ... Read more
