Book Description

The author of the hugely popular beliefnet.com column "Ask Pastor Paul” takes teen readers on a hip, nonjudgmental tour of the world's major religions.

In Teen Spirit, Paul Raushenbush provides the answers to the most common questions and concerns he hears from teens (in some cases using actual letters he has received), as well as giving them a more in-depth introduction to the many different religions they encounter on their soccer teams, in the lunchroom and in their friends' homes.

Teen Spirit covers each of the major religions present in America, complete with basic tenets, testimonies from famous celebrity practitioners, teen voices on why they like practicing that religion, misperceptions, specific roles and rites of passage for young people, and etiquette for how to behave when invited to an unfamiliar religious event.

Fun graphics, interactive activities and quizzes, and a hip teen look will especially appeal to young readers.

5-0 out of 5 stars WONDERFUL age-appropriate Bible!
At age 4, our church gives children their first gift Bible as a first milestone. This Bible was given to my daughter last year and it is absolutely fabulous. The stories are written for readers between 4 - 8 years old. At the end of each story, there are a couple questions to ask your child. There is also a Biblical reference so you may look up the coordinating Bible scripture in your Bible, which we do together sometimes. The illustrations are also wonderful. Most stories are a page long which keeps it short and to-the-point to hold interest. If you are looking for a Bible for a child in this age group, I would highly recommend Family Time Bible! ... Book Description

A little boy imagines what it would be like if Jesus came to spend the afternoon with him -- the little boy Jesus, of course, "about the age that I am and about the size of me."

It is easy to see why this friendly little book, originally published in England, has already sold 19 editions. It offers the Golden Rule in concepts easily grasped by small children and indirectly suggests some ways to carry them out.

"I still can share with Jesus
the nicest of my toys
by lending them or giving them
to poorer girls and boys.

And though He may not visit me
as I have wished He would,
yet even so He'll bless my house
if I am kind and good."

5-0 out of 5 stars A Beautiful Message---Plain and Simple
I always imagined myself what it would be like if Jesus did come to my house. What were some of the things I'd do, how would I act and what would I say? Then this little book came along. The little boy in this book imagines what it would be like if Jesus spent a day with him. If Jesus were a little boy like him he thought, he would share with him the best toys he had. By lending them to the poorest boys and girls. Even though Jesus maybe not have visited, the little boy hoped that He would bless his house for all the kindness and goodness he gave to those less fortunate. It teaches young children the Christian Golden Rule of sharing with one another. And, caring for your fellow friends that brings joy to everyone's heart. The gentle message tells children how to treat others with the love of giving. This should be a classic of children's books. It teaches a valuable lesson.

5-0 out of 5 stars This book is destined to be every child's favorite book.
I was given this book as a young child. I lost the book but I never forgot the story. Now that I am about to have a child of my own this book is how I want to introduce him to Jesus. This book introduces Jesus to children on their own level, as a visiting guest just like any other. It makes the child think about how he or she would treat Jesus if He came to their house. Would they need to act differently or not? It makes the child think about their actions now. I love this book

5-0 out of 5 stars How to Treat Your Guests
This was my very first book. I was about five when my mom got it for me and read it to me. I was so impressed with how this little boy went to all the trouble to see that the little boy Jesus had the best of everything when He came for a visit. It was a great lesson in reminding children how important it is to not only share when other kids come for a visit, but to treat them as if Jesus Himself had come to visit. It teaches children how to treat others with respect, courtesy, kindness and love. It's a wonderful little book and I wholeheartedly recommend that it find a home in every child's library. It's theme has stayed with me all of my life and it is the single most influential book, aside from the Bible, that I have ever read!

5-0 out of 5 stars lesson for life
I remember this book as a child and think it taught me many lessons that I use in life. Excellent for all kids and adults.

5-0 out of 5 stars If Jesus Came To My House
I have my original copy given to me when I was child in Sunday School on a military base in Germany. This little book was my precious treasure that made the presence of Christ meaningful and gave me courage to reach out and do the things that needed to be done to help others. 2-0 out of 5 stars Simple[minded] pantheism for preschoolers
Arthur Schopenhauer once said, "The chief objection I have to pantheism is that it says nothing. To call the world God is not to explain it; it is only to enrich our language with a superfluous synonym for the word 'world.'" So it is with this very sweet, very shallow New Age book for tots. If you teach a child that God is present in a tree, then better not take him to a lumber mill. Illustrated with impressionistic oil paint daubings.

5-0 out of 5 stars Loving "Becoming Me"
This is just a gorgeous book. Though I can imagine it would be perfect for children, the message and reminder about "Becoming Me" seems even more important for adults to read. Thank you for putting such a beautifully written and illustrated book together for those of us who tend to forget the simple beauty of who we are always becoming.

5-0 out of 5 stars Soul Food
A sweet and lovely little book, Becoming Me is the literary equivalent of a warm, gentle embrace. What Boroson does so well here is craft elegant prose that is clear enough for children to understand- yet profound enough for adults to appreciate -the wonder of having a soul. The first time I read it, quite unexpectedly, I burst into tears, overwhelmed with a feeling of gratitude. This is a book that I will return to again and again for its gentle reminder of who God is, who we are, and why we're here.

5-0 out of 5 stars Recognizing God in Each of Us
BECOMING ME is a heart-warming picture book that tells the story of creation from a very special vantage point -- that of the Creator. I find myself drawn so fully into this story that I feel I am experiencing what it is like to be God, in a universe where "nobody who knew that I was... but I was." Vivid illustrations splash a riot of vibrant colors to express the way spirit finds form in the physical world, as the words transport me into the mind and very heart of God. The most precious gift of BECOMING ME is summed up best in its pages: "Sometimes you realize that you are me." This book has a message so priceless that I'll enjoy it with my daughters for years to come... and keep long after they've grown up and moved off on their own.

5-0 out of 5 stars Truth and Beauty
As the world increasingly breaks with the habitual patterns of its prescribed roles, there is a need to describe the process of casting off the shackles of compromising conformity, and this book does this both simply and elegantly. With its broad and colorful graphics and its haiku like brevity, it leaves the reader full of hope and wonder. Bravo to the author, I look forward to more like this. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Great for kids and adults
I picked up this book at the library as reading material for my 17-month-old son. He (and I) loved the illustrations. I appreciated it being a real Bible story, and a history lesson--marvelously illustrated in 48 pages; but this books goes where most authors and illustrators don't. You won't see this version of the story in movie theatres. I did additional research to verify the accuracy of its' contents and I discoverd everything to be valid. This book should be read by all African-American children (and adults). They won't read about their kings and queens in textbooks as others are portrayed--which is a dis-service to their culture. I purchased three copies for myself and will be purchasing more as gifts.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellently written, beautifully illustrated.
This beautifully illustrated book provides children and their parents with a wonderful story that also has a powerful message. It teaches all of us that we can learn from each other and, more importantly, that every culture can learn from another. The book should be used in schools. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars It's Little, It's a Book, and It's About God.
Truth in advertising, what more could you ask for? My Little Book About God is indeed little, and avoids taking any particular dogmatic approach. God is not described as an old man in the sky, nor are any particular religions held to be true to the detriment of others. Simply put, God is presented as great and loving, no more. Comparisons between the child's world and God's make these points explicit. Jesus, Muhammad, Buddha, Zoraster, Joseph Smith and the like never make so much as a cameo, and on this basis perhaps some will find the book too bland. But after all, it isn't My Little Book About How My Religion Is Right and Yours Isn't And You Are Going To Burn For All Eternity Because You Are An Infidel. Certainly devout atheists will find the book objectionable, but there is even room for secular humanists (God might literally be Love, and not a separate, intelligent presence at all) in in this approach. Hopefully most will find it a message of tolerance and love from which their children will benefit--two qualities that are far too rare in today's troubled times.

3-0 out of 5 stars This Bombed With My Boys
The text is lovely but needs to be abridged for the attention span of the average preschooler. It starts out fine: "GOD IS GREAT." But when the text waxes poetically about light and stars and ancient mountain tops on the following pages, they lost both my boys. Usually my youngest will at least look at the pictures, but he found the baby doll-faced children, some of them with no pupils to their eyes (at least that is what I think he found scary about their eyes,) off-putting. Perhaps this is better for an older audience (mine were three and five, at the time) -- the message is certainly timeless.

5-0 out of 5 stars KEEP THIS ONE FOREVER
This was one of my favorite books as a child so naturally I wanted my daughter to have a copy. To my delight, it has a few new illustrations now [black children are included.]

The wording of MY LITTLE GOLDEN BOOK ABOUT GOD can be at times too lengthy for a preschooler but it adds to the appeal later in life. My two-year old daughter has never complained though, she is mesmerized by the pictures just as I was at her age! Children love to listen to any story with illustrations this magnificient. Way to go Eloise Wilkin! I finally get to thank you after 30 years!

I highly recommend this book because I remember it fondly and vividly from childhood. I had countless books growing up but this is one of only a handful that I remember and that is also etched into my heart forever. Let's keep the little child in our hearts; this is a great book to help us achieve this feat!

But Jesus said, "LET THE LITTLE CHILDREN COME TO ME, AND DO NOT FORBID THEM; FOR OF SUCH IS THE KINGDOM OF HEAVEN." Matthew 19:14 THE HOLY BIBLE

3-0 out of 5 stars Not a terrible book, but we have read better
"My Little Golden Book About God" was a little above my preschooler's head. Many pages were written in words my child could understand (i.e "God Is Great" and "God gives us everything we need"). The vast majority of the book, though, is written in such a way that I had a difficult time reading it to my daughter in a way she could comprehend. Long (almost run-on) sentences frequented the writing style of the author. I, as an adult, enjoyed this book, but would not recommend it for a child younger than about 8. Search a little more. There are some wonderful "Books about God" out there for young children.

5-0 out of 5 stars Wonderful description of God's love
This book offers children a wonderful description of God's love and the awsomeness of his creations. The book explains God from a Judeo-Christian perspective, but it does not particularly single out any specific denomination. The book is illustrated well by Garth Williams. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Adding Color Adds Beauty
I love this book. My favorite uncle used to say that all people are God's masterpieces because God sometimes mixes colors to make bonus colors and more beautiful people. "God picked out our colors," this very astute and loving man used to say. "He wanted more beauty for the world so He was always thinking up more beautiful colors to add to it."

This book affirms that sentiment; this book is a very good reflection on diversity, individuality and being human. Three cheers for this book!

4-0 out of 5 stars Pretty Colors
I bought this book for my two youngest grandchildren who are 2 and 4. My daughter said that they loved it. There is so much out there to destroy a child's self-esteem, that it is nice to find a book that will affirm it for them. I hope they get years of enjoyment from this book.

5-0 out of 5 stars The most perfect book in my child's library
As a parent in a transracial adoption, I am continually frustrated by the anorexic selection of role models for my African-American child in children's literature. I try to surround my child with deafening messages of self-love and self-worth and celebrate the beautiful brown hue! This book takes passages of the bible and translates it into self-empowering beliefs for a child of any color. The illustrations are warm and well-done, the text is simple, but poetic. The book itself is sturdy and can take a beating. I adore this book. It cost a little more than most other children's books, but it's well worth it!

5-0 out of 5 stars Beautiful Black Children
As I read COLORS COME FROM GOD JUST LIKE ME I wished that I had a book like this growing up. Many Black Children are exposed daily to sterotypes and negative images (from society and the media) regarding their veil (skin tone) and because of this they begin to view their veil as inferior. This book focuses on the many WONDERFUL colors God gave the world including the MANY skin tones that Blacks posess. As I read this story to my daughter I hope she recieves the same message I obtained, my physical attributes are not inferior, I am beautiful because God created me. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Gift for Baby Shower
I have given this book to five different mothers at baby showers and they all adore it. I get invited to lots of baby showers and I have decided to always purchase books in the hopes that parents will read to their children. This book has been a favorite hit with everyone. Not everyone likes Thomas Kincade, however, I find his books peaceful in conjunction with these children's verses.

1-0 out of 5 stars Great verses, but the illustrations are terrible!
I received this book as a gift, and I just can't bring myself to read to my baby from a book with such sickening, cloying illustrations. Looking at Thomas Kincaid's work makes my skin crawl. Ewwww! I cannot understand how Thomas Kincaid makes a living. Is America's taste in art really that bad??

I am looking for an edition of *A Child's Garden of Verses* that does not feature the "artwork" of Thomas Kincaid.

I had this book (without the illustrations) as a child, and loved it.

5-0 out of 5 stars Thomas Kinkade - A Child's Garden of Verses
I love reading the verses to my grandchildren (ages 3-7). They listen attentively, enchanted by every selection. They have quickly learned to recognize most of the authors. My grandchildren in kingergarten and first grade are able to read many of the verses themselves, although they still like Grandma to read to them. Hearing the various rhythms of poetry has been a motivation and inspiration for them to emulate in their oral reading.

It is a fantastic gift for any age child. Great for older children to read to their younger siblings. The vast majority of the book is of interest and most enjoyable for all ages, from the very young to the very old (but young at heart). My children have asked for copies to be given to their children's other grandparents......fantastic book for grandparents to read to their grandchildren.

We have all enjoyed the artwork along with the verses. The assortment of poems, prayers and scripture is excellent. A refreshing, inspiring, memorable, and enjoyable book. It is a true "family" book for reading enjoyment as well as a "coffee table" book!

5-0 out of 5 stars A Child's Garden of Verses
Growing up with the words of Robert Lewis Stevenson, I knew that this combination with Thomas Kinkade would be a success. Filled also with bible verses, this is the perfect gift for a Baptism - I'm buying several to give to babies and children of friends and family. It is a wonderful keepsake to be treasured.

5-0 out of 5 stars Willful Ignorance of Founding Fathers
To those who propagandize the Founding Fathers as non Theists. Please read their own personal statements.

Thomas Jefferson:
"Can the liberties of a nation be thought secure when we have removed their only firm basis, a conviction in the minds of the people that these liberties are of the gift of God?"

John Adams:
"The greatest glory of the American Revolution was this: It connected in one indissoluble bond, the principles of civil government with the principles of Christianity."

"Our Constitution was made only for a moral and religious people. It is wholly inadequate to the government of any other."
"We have no government armed with power capable of contending with passions unbridled by morality and religion."

George Washington's Morning Prayer:
O eternal and everlasting God, I presume to present myself this morning before thy Divine majesty, beseeching thee to accept of my humble and hearty thanks, that it hath pleased thy great goodness to keep and preserve me the night past from all the dangers poor mortals are subject to, and has given me sweet and pleasant sleep, whereby I find my body refreshed and comforted for performing the duties of this day, in which I beseech thee to defend me from all perils of body and soul.
Direct my thoughts, words and work. Wash away my sins in the immaculate blood of the lamb, and purge my heart by thy Holy Spirit, from the dross of my natural corruption, that I may with more freedom of mind and liberty of will serve thee, the ever lasting God, in righteousness and holiness this day, and all the days of my life.
Increase my faith in the sweet promises of the Gospel. Give me repentance from dead works. Pardon my wanderings, & direct my thoughts unto thyself, the God of my salvation. Teach me how to live in thy fear, labor in thy service, and ever to run in the ways of thy commandments. Make me always watchful over my heart, that neither the terrors of conscience, the loathing of holy duties, the love of sin, nor an unwillingness to depart this life, may cast me into a spiritual slumber. But daily frame me more and more into the likeness of thy son Jesus Christ, that living in thy fear, and dying in thy favor, I may in thy appointed time attain the resurrection of the just unto eternal life. Bless my family, friends & kindred unite us all in praising & glorifying thee in all our works begun, continued, and ended, when we shall come to make our last account before thee blessed Saviour, who hath taught us thus to pray, our Father.

2-0 out of 5 stars Well Intentioned, But Off Center
Mr. Lehaye's clear intent was to bolster our confidence in the Christian roots of our country. Unfortunately, his depiction while factual leaves out ideas that would give his reader's a better perspective on the Faith of our ForeFathers.

1-0 out of 5 stars This Book Is Wrong About Our Founding Fathers
This book is wrong about our founding fathers. Thomas Jefferson hoped that our country would be one of religious diversity. Today he'd be considered a Unitarian. He had friends who were Buddhist and Hindu. Jefferson was a Deist. So were Washington, Adams, Franklin, Paine, Hamilton, Madison. They admired the teachings of Jesus but they did not consider Jesus to be a divine being, and they did not accept the Old Testament version of God (a cruel, vengeful, authoritarian, anthropomorphic being). Read some of the letters our founding fathers wrote. They believed in science and reason. They denounced the narrow-minded intolerant Christian bigots of their day.

James Madison said in a speech in 1778: "Freedom arises from the multiplicity of sects, which pervades America and which is the best and only security for religious liberty in any society. For where there is such a variety of sects, there cannot be a majority of any one sect to oppress and persecute the rest."

Read "Why the Religious Right is Wrong about the Separation of Church and State" and "The Christ Conspiracy".

After reading the sadly ignorant and biased, review by Dennis Harvey that is listed below, I just had to point out that the facts are standards to which we should adhere after placing emotions and heartfelt desires aside. If we are intellectually honest enough to do so, the only "revisionists," are those who still refuse to acknowledge the facts, or attempt to subvert them, even after they have been presented to them. Ignorance of the truth is one thing, refusal to accept it when handed to you on a platter is quite another.

That this country was founded upon a common set of Jewish and Christian principles of morality and equality is self-evident, even to the most casual observation, if one but takes the time to examine the facts. Facts such as those presented in this book and others like it. Now, anyone who disagrees with this cannot attack me based upon logic or facts, so they will need to resort to character assignation and perhaps call me narrow minded or bigoted. However, contrary to popular buzz words, Christians are NOT legalistic or bigoted when they stand up for their heritage, any more than one of many other sub-cultures in our society which we are asked to tolerate would be narrow minded in voicing their feelings.

Facts hold more weight than feelings though, and individuals like Lehaye have finally said enough is enough and have stood up for the truth. If more people consulted their local library, bypassed the revisionist section, and went straight to the original documents that this country was built upon this country would once again be a bastion of liberty and freedom for ALL. For example, anyone who has heard of Noah's flood account, and then takes the time to read the Old Testament or the Tanakh literally, will come away believing that approximately 4400 years ago there was a global killer of a catastrophic flood just as what we see supported in all walks of science, Archaeology, and Geology to name but two. As such, all "races" or should I more accurately say, "skin colors," on the earth today actually share a common ancestral heritage in our forefather Noah who lived, about 4400 years ago if we are to take Jewish account literally. I choose to do so, because Jewish scribes would bury their scrolls if even a punctuation mark was inaccurate from one copy to the next as the history was passed down from eyewitness account to modern day). Therefore, Christians and Jews who read scripture literally, have a head start on this whole novel concept of "racial equality," since we don't even believe in racial division to begin with - the Bible tells us we are all one blood. The same sort of retort could be proffered for any other silly character slur in the realm of "bigoted and narrow minded" against a Christian for speaking up for the truth.

Getting back on topic, the facts remains that our Founding Fathers, though their intellectual honesty and curiosity may have led them to dabble into other lines of thought such as Deism (note Dennis, this is how you spell Deism), there was never the less a deliberate effort on their part to model our form of government upon the skeletal framework of the Jewish Tenakh and the Christian's Canonical, 66 books of the Old and New Testaments. This evidence, as pointed out be Lehaye, David Barton and many others that are now standing up for Christians in this day when anything goes in America -- except for Christianity and Judaism that is -- stands solidly upon the facts, not revisionism as we are so unrightfully being accused of.

Lehaye puts forth a noble effort to summarize a small sub-section from the plethora of facts that are available from which to draw ones research, and he defends the original intent of those who laid down their lives for religious freedom from state sponsored religion, such as the Anglican and Roman Catholic state religions that were in place throughout the nations that bordered the Mediterranean Sea at the time of our American Revolution from Great Britain. Today we see all around us events similar to those so vigorously opposed by founding fathers as they strove to build our nation upon Judeo-Christian moral principles and to insure the practice of these principles in complete freedom and liberty from a state mandated religion. Today the cancer that was once the rallying cry which motivated men and women to lay down their lives for freedom is again rearing its ugly head in the form of Secular Humanism, Macro-evolution, and the religion of Atheism - all modern examples of what our founding fathers so greatly feared and warned us would be the unraveling of our society if they were allowed to go unchallenged.

In case after case, our Supreme Court and founding fathers and other scholars who influenced the SC justices and national leaders, such as Blackstone in his various legal texts, continuously referred to the Biblical framework laid down since the beginning of time (as recorded in Hebrew historical writings), as their most preferred and ideal model for our system of government. A system of government that history shows served us quite well until it was thrown out by a rogue court in 1962. Since that day we have been reaping the rewards of our lackadaisical attitude toward our Creator and His will for any nation on earth that will chose to adhere to his will.

We had our faults, as we failed to apply scripture literally, such as inequality of slaves and the rights of women, but these were not faults caused by a Judeo-Christian system of government, but rather a failure to apply a Biblically correct world-view to our nations publicly championed moral structure. However, is spite of our flaws in terms of applying a Christ-like love of our neighbors and our spouses to our selves, it was not until we told God to get lost as a nation that we truly began to spiral out of control into the moral relativism that is so prevalent today.

2-0 out of 5 stars Leaves out the truth.
Like all revisionist history books, this one convienantly leaves out references to anything that would dispute its claims.
This book makes no mention of Deisim. Thomas Payne wrote a book called "The Age Of Reason" that detailed the beliefs of many of our founding fathers like Thomas Jefferson and most of the big names, yet, there is no mention of it or Thomas Payne. Face it Christains,
many of our founders did not believe in Christ, Moses or Mohammed, and they had the good sense to put separation of church and state into the constitution. Thank God. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Great for daughters and parents!
What a great book. Inspiring stories and lessons that show how God will impact a young life and give her wisdom on how to deal with life's obstacles. It teaches how qualities like faith, self-respect and wisdom are not only important in navigating our daily lives but are God-given gifts presented to us so that we may experience the life God had planned for us - a life far beyond our own expectations. A must read for any teenage girl and the first chapter "Heart Of A Father" is a must read for parents. Wonderful words of wisdom for an era when young people need it most.

5-0 out of 5 stars what a wonderful story!
This is a gem of a book. It is a beautifully told, gentle story that gives children a clear picture of God's love for them and the lengths to which He will go in pursuing them. My just-turned-5yo daughter easily understood the metaphor and how God's hand on our kite strings is necessary so that can fly and soar instead of crashing to the ground. I highly recommend this book. ... Read more
