Book Description

Little Angel Mike

is a guardian-angel-in-training. He doesn't understand how God can let bad things happen in the world. Whether it's the tragic events of September 11, 2001, or the loss of a beloved pet, shouldn't God be able to stop the bad things? Big Angel Gabe is a wise old angel, and it's his job to help answer Little Angel Mikey's tough questions and to guide him through the mystery of suffering and into a hopeful place. In a nonpreachy, accessible manner, the message of God's great compassion and our ability to bear even the greatest burdens is offered here with a gentle wisdom.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent help for parents and children
I found this book to be an excellent way to "talk about" the events of 9/11 with my 9 year old child, and try to understand at her level (or younger) "why God let it happen". We read it together, discussing it as we went along. She looked forward to reading it together, which was an opening to talk about her feelings about that horrific day and giving some explanation of what happened to all who died on 9/11 and after. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Common Sense that isn't Common
The simplicity of this book is amazing. They say so much with so few words and it is all inspired by the Word of God.It is filled with the practical application of the Word, and I constantly find myself going back to it for reference. At the end of each chapter, there is a section of specific bullets on how you can practically apply all that was talked about in that section.

The book is tiny.It really is about five or six inches tall, about six or seven inches wide and maybe 1.5 or 2 inches thick. So it's portable! Not a bad buy at all. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Great way to end the day.
My daughter (who turns 5 in 3 months) enjoys hearing the stories every evening before bed. I have found it is a great way to teach her about her religion and God. Children are innately curious and love to learn. The stories touch on so many subjects and helps children to understand the lessons. :)

5-0 out of 5 stars A Divine Translation!
I have a Master's Degree in Theology and have been disappointed with many children's bibles for various reasons: too simple, too detailed, skewed in perspective, and so forth. This bible is so thoughtful, comprehensive and well written that even an adult reader will get much out of it! It is beautifully and delightfully illustrated as well. I checked this book out of the library for my kids (2 and 6) and found myself enjoying it in my own devotional times! I am now here to purchase this book for our family and for a gift. A friend of mine has a German copy of it that she recently bought while in Germany so more languages might be available as well. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent book for children of any age
I purchased this book for my two grandchildren, ages 1 year, and 3 years. I had it sent to my address so I could read it before mailing it to them. It is truthful, easy to understand, even for the very young, and exquisetly illustrated. It tells of the love of Jesus Christ for us. My daughter-in-law wrote to me, that my grandchildren love it, and she reads it to them before bed, and during the day when the 1 year old naps, the 3 year old trys to read it to my daughter-in-law. I recommend this book highly for those who want to teach their children about our blessed Savior. The book is truly outstanding, and a treasure for years to come.

5-0 out of 5 stars Highly recommended!
This beautiful little book is a great tool for a parent who wants to give a young child an understanding of who God is, why Jesus came to the world, and what one needs to do to receive Him into his or her heart. Small words are used, but the concepts seem to be straight on and orthodox, with each page ending with a Bible verse. Also, I must say that Pam Rossi's large and colorful illustrations add just the right touch to the book!

This book is a great gift for parents and their children. I sat down with my two little ones, and we went through it together. I really love this book, and so do they. I highly recommend this book to anyone with some children or grandchildren!

5-0 out of 5 stars a must have
This book helped me teach my children about Jesus and the wonderful gift of Salvation. The pictures are simple and they grabbed the attention of my two boys. John MacArthur did a wonderful job of descibing in words how kids need the gift that only Jesus can give.

4-0 out of 5 stars catchy, classic for the very young
My boys love this book (and the video). Leans toword Arminianism and pre-millennialism, but otherwise complete sound. Christian world view was never this fun and simple!

5-0 out of 5 stars A fun look at creation and the alphabet
This book takes each letter of the alphabet and applies it to the story of creation. The book is divided into a young-child's section and also contains a section for older children. This is a great book that makes learning fun. It ties together creation and the alphabet, a plus for learning children!

5-0 out of 5 stars A is for Adam
This book teaches creationism over evolution as well as teaching the letters of the alphabet and rhyming skills. Each page has a huge picture for the little ones so they won't get bored. There are questions and answers as well as exercises to teach adults and children how to defend their faith. You can also color in the pages at the end of the book. This book is a great teaching tool and a must have for your home library!!!

5-0 out of 5 stars An important message for any age
It's never to early to teach your child the importance of harmony and tolerance and this little book is a great place to start. When some zebras lose their white stripes and others their black stripes, they must look inside themselves and each other to learn to get along.

I especially appreciated the very last page which placed the zebras with many children of different races and nationalities so that my 5-year old and I could talk about the differences in people, too.

5-0 out of 5 stars Awesome!
My 5 year old loves this book and it has a very positive message!

5-0 out of 5 stars Top Priority Message
What If Zebras Lost Their Stripes gives you a perfect occasion to open young minds to how adults of different colors and nationalities -- and kids -- should think about their diversity. With just a little thought, kids will get this top priority message instantly. A great contribution.

5-0 out of 5 stars Recommended for parents who wish to raise open-minded adults
I cannot say enough about how wonderful this book is. I am not a Christian, and I am not a religious person. Still, I want my children to know about and understand the powerful religious forces in the world.

The information is simple and straightforward, but there is enough there to clearly explain the foundations of the world's (and history's) dominant religions. The recommended ages are 4 - 8, but I think 4 might be too young and 11 might be a better top age.

The book focuses on acceptance of the differences in religious beliefs. I do not see the Judeo-Christian bias described by a previous reviewer.

5-0 out of 5 stars Breathtaking overview of religion
Ironically, the 'fundies' ...are unlikely to approve of it! ...extremely committed 'fundamentalist' Christians (or other religion, as in ultra-orthodox Jews, or hardline Muslims or whatever). This book is not made for people whose worldview is already cast in stone- there is no way that they would be able to endorse a book that sums itself up by saying "The fact that in this world there are so many people following so many different paths to God shows that there is no one right way."

This book is a rarity in these times: a book that looks at the big picture, written in a clear, accessible but literate manner. It does not talk down to the reader- precocious 9's will enjoy it, but so will adults. It is a journey through the evolution of religion, from early concepts of powers beyond our own into increasingly structured and codified faiths. The summaries of the developments of the major world faiths of today are outstanding- they give a clear context and understanding in a very clear, succinct paragraphs. Illustrations in a variety of styles support and augment the text beautifully.

There are other books for teaching the specifics of different faiths, for every age range. This book paints a picture of how the religions of today developed, and makes a strong case for tolerance of understanding and respecting other paths to God/ Enlightenment/ Truth etc. Even the back cover quotes pitch in- I initially ignored them, assuming that they were the usual "this is a great book" blurbs, but instead they area fine selection of quotes from people as diverse as Frederick the Great and Thomas Paine.

If you are interested in a broader understanding of religion as a part of human society - for yourself or for your children- this is a great place to start. And you may just find some things that lift your faith in the world at the same time. This is a don't miss book for anybody who can accept the idea that there is more than one right answer.

5-0 out of 5 stars A Very Nice Book on Religion.
I think this book is very moving and provides students with a greater understanding of religion. I did not find this book biased and thought that it would help some of my students, who came from communist countries, understand what religion is. Doesn't mean that I want to convert them, but it will be easier to participate in discussions of religion and create dialogue with their parents, who entered them into a religious school.

5-0 out of 5 stars Wonderful UN-BIASED introduction to world religions!!!
Unfortunately, a previous review of this book deterred me from buying it for quite some time. But I happened to find it in a local used bookstore and LOVED it! I am an atheist and I tend to be overly sensitive to religious propaganda. I get very aggrivated when I feel people are forcing their beliefs on me. This book absolutely did NOT do that!

This was a very good introduction to world religions. In my opinion it gave very equal treatment to the different religions and was not biased in any way. And after introducing each of the more popular religions, the writers spent an additional five pages discussing lesser practiced religions, atheism, diveristy, and the "Golden Rule". The very last pages of the book even contain a glossary which includes information about religions that weren't included in the book.

This was exactly what I was looking for to introduce the various world religions to my 6-year-old son! Don't let the previous reviewer scare you away! I highly recommend this book!

1-0 out of 5 stars Pro-Christian Bias / Better Than Nothing?
This book is mostly a "pro-religion / all religions are OK in their own way / let's all get along" kind of book. However, despite its pro-religion emphasis, tidbits of truth and relevant information regarding religion are available but be forewarned that there's a heavy dose of pro-christian / pro-religion cheering in the book.

It seems to be making an effort to recognize (as in acknowledge the existence of) all religions but it also seems to be preaching that Christianity is the best, Jewish/Islam religions are close, and all other religions have a ways to go to measure up to the Judeo-Christian-Islamic GOD. In other words, typical western style GOD propaganda rears its ugly head here.

This might be an ideal book for fundies or devoutly religious folks (especially Christians) to read in order to expose them to other religions in a manner which gives them warm fuzzies about religion being an OK idea - for me, personally, this is not the approach to take with kids, but hey, maybe better this (tidbits of facts mixed with standard pro-religion propaganda) than nothing when it comes to the brainwashed single-religion focus that most parents inflict on their kids.

If you are seeking basic religious information for your children (with scant details on actual facts and no information regarding the truth or lack thereof regarding religious beliefs) along with apologetics for ALL religions and (included at no extra charge) three sentences on disbelief making disbelief appear to be a flawed way of thinking, this is the book for you. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars A Creation Story that Personalizes God's Love for Your Child
"No Sky" not only manages to show how the universe was created by the greatest passion of God, but by the end of this book, your child is the center of that universe, and never was anyone loved more. The best creation story I've ever read. Read it to your child using your child's name in place of the generic "child," as I saw Walter Wangerin do in the telling of this story on a videotape (he told this story in response to some children taunting his daughter). Then read the story and insert your own name instead of the child's. This is an incredibly powerful book. You may find yourself in tears. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent way to read the bible
This is an excellently written, faithful translation of the Bible that is broken down into 365 readings that are at just the right level for my five year old. I searched long and hard for a way to build Bible reading into our daily routine, and I have found many children's Bibles too watered down to get the point of the story across to my five year old. This one is at the perfect level, but I also think that there is enough in each story that we will be using it for another 4-5 years. My son begs me to read it to him every night before bed.

The questions and lesson at the end of each reading help to get my son involved in the reading for the day. My son is regularly complimented by his pre-school and Sunday school teachers on his Bible knowledge and this Bible is why. ... Read more

2-0 out of 5 stars Good inductive study/Poor science
Ms. Arthur and Ms. Ardnt are to be highly commended for their efforts to teach children how to study the Bible inductively. They don't insult the child's intelligence with an abundance of shallow statements about God and "just be nice" theology. Rather, they attempt to take the child by the hand and actually teach him or her how to interpret the Bible using some foundational tools that will allow the child to discover the meaning of the text on his or her own. They even do a careful job tacking the thorny theological issue of the Fall of Adam and Eve.

Unfortunately, this book also contains typical young-earth "science" -- teaching children that there were dinosaurs on Noah's ark, that the entire fossil record was laid down in a global flood a few thousand years ago, and other equally bogus "scientific" (and biblical) claims. It's sad that this approach is so commonly used in children's books written by conservative Christians. Although it's taught under the banner of "critical thinking" what it really does is set the child up for a crisis of faith later on when he or she learns about the MOUNTAIN of physical and biblical evidence standing against this paradigm.

And the REALLY sad part is that it's completely unnecessary to impose such a paradigm on the biblical text itself. If the authors would consistenly apply the tools they are teaching the children, they would realize that the text does not demand a view that the earth was created in six 24-hour days a few thousand years ago. A literal, grammatical and historical hermeneutic allows for an day-age approach or a framework apporach -- both of which allow both of God's revelations to man (the words of the Bible AND the record of nature) to inform one another on the issue of how and when God created.

The theme of this book is discovery -- teaching children how to discover the Word of God for themselves. Unfortunately, the authors do not thoroughly delve into either the biblical text or the record of nature. Instead they treath both revelations in a shallow manner and end up misleading children away from the methods of true discovery. ... Read more

Book Description

This lively collection of four stories gives voices and names to women from biblical and ancient times whom weseldomremember. But God Remembered imagines and remembers, and weaves the stories of:

Lilith, the first woman in the garden of Eden, and her determination to have men and women treat each other as equals; Serach the musician, who, with her song, reveals to her grandfather Jacob that his son Joseph is still alive, and whose courage to speak out heals the wrongs of another generation; Bityah, who draws the baby Moses from the Nile and with a mother's bravery encourages him to become who he will be, proving that taking a risk to do what's right can change the world; the bold-spirited Daughters of Z, who struggle against discrimination with great daring--and extraordinary results.

But God Rememberedis a modern reclaiming of the Bible, a celebration of courageous and wise women from ancient tradition. These stories invite children of all ages to remember, and to bring their own faith and dreams to life. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars A must for all ages!
Many of the lessons we all need to hear are best heard from the perspective of a child -- and by becoming childlike in our listening! These are the old stories so often over looked by our culture and our religious communities. A must to read to all children. A must to celebrate with the women of tomorrow! But I have used this book mostly with adults to re-enforce positive feminine lessons with a biblical back up they did not know exists. Let us continue to tell the stories! The author and illustrator do a beautiful job keeping the message alive!

4-0 out of 5 stars God remembered
Sasso has taken four "incomplete" little known stories from the Bible-- the stories of Lilith, Serach, Bityah and the Daughters of Z-- and filled in the blanks, so to speak. The result is a beautiful volume that is a pleasure to read. ... Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars Simple Bible pop-up books
These small colorful Bible pop books come in a handy carrying case. The stories are very short and simple, though in their attempts to rhyme the verse they lose a bit of the story content. Some Christians may not care for the depiction of God (in one book) as an old man in a white robe. Overall, colorful and enjoyable for toddlers to age 4. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars How to spend quality time with your family.
This is an excellent devotional for young children. The pictures are very appealing to them. Each entry has a story with ties into the Young Readers Bible. There are fun activities. At thanksgiving we did one where we went outside and collected things that God made in our world, acorns, leaves, sticks, pinecones. The kids had fun gluing and learning about all the things that God made. There are prayers and memory verses also included. We use it for our family devotional time. It had simple easy to read words so that your child can read with you. You definatly need the bible that accompanies it to make it all flow together. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent!! Excellent!! Excellent!!
THIS REVIEW IS BASED ON THE BOOK ILLUSTRATED BY PAUL MICICH.

While researching various books for my 22 mo old daughter, I decided to purchase this book based on the reviews that I had read. I have never heard of this story (I'm 39) and found the reviews very fascinating. After receiving the book and reading it, I'm thrilled that I decided to purchase it. Although the story is too long for her to sit through it's entirety at the moment, the pictures themselves are SO worthy a shortened version of the story. A beautifully depicted heaven and the antics of a little cherub create a wonderful mixture of humor and wonderment. And finally, the gift of love for Christmas - what better way to share the true meaning of Christmas than His acceptance of a gift for the newborn Jesus given freely and honestly as only a child can give - a small box of the little boy's most priceless treasures. A true Christmas classic.

5-0 out of 5 stars A Child's Purity of Heart
In response to the reviewer from Oroville, CA, who gave this book a low rating, I offer this: I think he made the mistake of seeing The Littlest Angel's Heaven as a place where there could never be any fear or suffering. The author allowed this human reality to enter Heaven with The Littlest Angel so that all of the complacent angels (but really all complacent people on earth) could be reminded that the most angelic being is the innocent one who gives what he or she loves to others and not what she or he hopes will impress others. The metaphor is perfect: wouldn't it be just like God to teach us all that those among us who are thought of (and think of themselves) as the lowest in importance and stature are actually in His heart those who are the most pure? And how could that be taught more profoundly than to let everyone see a little child, with all of his or her fears and sorrows, lovingly comforted and lovingly validated by God? In my opinion, "The Littlest Angel" is the most beautiful, meaningful, and touching Christmas story ever written.

5-0 out of 5 stars A Wonderful Christmas Tradition
I got this book as a Christmas present when I was about 6, and I loved it! My edition of the book has a crimson cover, and the little angel looks like a small blond boy in a pair of light blue footie-pyjamas. I often re-read the book until I was about 9 or 10 and moved on to more big-kid stories.
Now that I am a mother (with a small blond boy who looks a lot like the angel) I've rediscovered the book. What a truly wonderful story. And, just like my mother, I end up reading the last few pages in tears!
I truly don't understand the reviewers who criticized the metaphysics of the book or the "$2 words". First of all, it's a STORY -- a fable -- an allegory. Save the arguments about the origin of angels until your child is in college majoring in theology or philosophy. Main point of the book is -- you are loved as you are, and the best gift is one that is given with love and from the heart.
About the "$2 words" -- how else will a child expand his vocabulary unless he encounters $2 words? Read the book as it is written, and answer the child's question when he says "Mommy, what's deportment?" It's that simple.

5-0 out of 5 stars A Family Tradition
My grandmother bought this book for my mother when she was little. My mother did the same for me. Now, I buy it for all of the little ones that I love. It is truly the best Christmas story ever written. It brings together the miracle of Christ's birth and the aching happiness of childhood. It is a celebration of life in its simplicity.

5-0 out of 5 stars Classic Story of Love, Giving and Tender Humor
'The Littlest Angel' by Charles Tazewell is one of the ten best-selling children's stories of all time. There has been several published editions of this beautiful classic, but none compares to the wonderful award-winning artistry of Paul Micich. Each illustration done in alkyd on canvas. It's the classic story about a little boy angel homesick for earth that was created by Tazewell as a backup for a Screen Guild production crisis. Well, the crisis never materialized, but 'The Littlest Angel' did. The first performance was narrated by Helen Hayes for the "Manhattan at Midnight" Christmas radio show. In 1946, it was released in book form. It was also recorded on Decca records. The magazine, Coronet published it in 1949 and later produced the first film version. Johnny Whitaker (Family Affair) starred as this little angel who couldn't stay out of trouble in the celestial city in the 1969 Hallmark Hall of Fame production. The TV show featured Fred Gwynne (The Munsters, Car 54 Where Are You?), Cab Calloway and E.G. Marshall. 'The Littlest Angel' was in it's 35th print at the time of Tazewell's death in 1972. Time magazine referred to it as the "international classic."

The story goes when this littlest angel arrived in the presence of the Gatekeeper he was four years and six months old. This littlest angel pretend that he wasn't impressed with his new unearthly home. It was that moment on heavenly peace wasn't quite the same. All the heavenly host didn't think he looked like an angel. His tiny halo tarnished and slipping down over his eyes or letting it fall from his head so it would roll down the golden street so he could chase it. Even his wings weren't just right. He's directed to the angel of peace. Dreading his ordeal he goes but he hears merry singing. He meets the Understanding Angel. The caring angel knew that the littlest angel was homesick and all the things he missed on earth. He asked the littlest angel what would make him happy. The cherub said it was a box he kept under his bed back home. The Understanding Angel did what he wished. From that day, the littlest angel changed for the best. It came to pass that Jesus, the Son of God was born in Bethlehem. All the glad tidings abound in paradise. All the angels prepared gifts for the Christ child. The littlest angel pondered what could he give the holy infant? His box, he thought. But it was shabby and ugly gift. But it was too late, God's hand moved over the other gifts to his little box. All the things the littlest angel ever loved on earth were there. Then God spoke. Of all the angels, I find that this small box pleases me most. It's contents are of the earth and of men and my Son is born to be king of both. These are the things my Son will love and cherish.....Suddenly the box glowed and radiantly brillant as it rose to the heavens. There it shone on the night of miracles the light reflecting the centuries by it's splendor, the lowly gift of the Littlest Angel. What all men call forever, "the Shining Star of Bethlehem." ...
