5-0 out of 5 stars Easy and quick devotion time with your child
We really enjoy this book. The 'lessons' are short - short enough even for 2 year olds. And there's always a very short prayer at the end. Again - short enough even for 2 year olds. I highly recommend this book as a way to introduce young children to daily devotions. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars An imperfect but admirable reference work
"What I Believe: A Young Person's Guide to the Religions of the World," by Alan Brown and Andrew Langley, is overall a well written book. The book includes several chapters, each of which is dedicated to a major religious tradition: Judaism, Christianity, Islam, Hinduism, Buddhism, Sikhism, and Shinto. There is also a "catch-all" chapter which gives limited information on other traditions: the Jain faith, the Baha'i faith, Rastafarianism, etc.

The various chapters describe certain aspects of these religions: the founding figure, customs, festivals, rites of passage, holy books, etc. The articles also describe some of the diversity in each tradition. The book also has a helpful glossary at the end.

The book is not without flaws and inconsistencies. For example, the authors mention "new cults" without really explaining the term. Also, they seem to leave out any real acknowledgment of secular humanism, atheism, or religious liberalism.

Overall, the book presents a rather sanitized look at world religions. The authors write, "As long as we respect each other's beliefs and allow people to practice their religion freely, the world should be a happier place. Religion can help us to live like brothers and sisters." A nice sentiment, but often far from harsh reality. Despite its flaws, however, "What I Believe" is an admirable achievement overall.

4-0 out of 5 stars Good effort at tackling a difficult subject and audience
What I Believe is a brightly illustrated "first-person" introduction to various world religions, including Judaism, Christianity, Islam, Hinduism, Buddhism, Sikhism, Shinto, and Taoism. Each major belief system is told through the eyes of a cheerfully drawn child who compare and contrast the major tenets of their faiths. Color photographs are interspersed with drawings of the children describing what it means to be of their faith, traditions, festivals, and practices around the world. This is a simple introduction to comparative religion, and it would be nearly impossible to try to describe all of the variants of each religion, so it comes as no surprise that there are a few details that have been left out. For instance, no mention is made that while Jews remember the near-sacrifice of Abraham's son Isaac, Muslims believe that the story is told about his son Ishmael - a minor differenc to some, but obviously not to Jews and Muslims. Much of the section on Christianity focuses on Catholic and Anglican worship, describing special garments that priests wear, saints, candles, and other trappings not traditionally found in many Protestant services. Finally, there are a few editing mistakes that obscure meaning: is the Buddhist meditative cloth a thanka or a tharka? Other than those glitches, this is a nice addition to any library for children, as it seems to be written from an ecumenical point of view, encouraging children to learn about and respect one another's faith systems. From a non-expert point of view, it does not seem to contain offensive or questionable information, and the fun illustrations are an easy way to introduce children to a variety of cultural and religious practices. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Mike
This book has changed my life forever as well.I have bought "many" of these books and distributed them to friends and family.I describe this book this way "Classic Christianity takes the things that I know from the Bible and makes them unforgettable and applicable to MY LIFE".I have studied both the original and the "Words & Pictures" versions and both are awesome tools for the Christian life.I disagree with the previous reviewer who stated that this is the "Kids Version", I don't believe that was the authors intents ... for a kids version of his original book. Moreover, the pictures bring to life the teachings.I have used the "Pictures" from this book to teach ADULTS the truths from God's Word. Please do not mistake this book as a "kiddy book", but rather buy it and study it and I am convinced that God will reveal His simple truths through this book.Hats off to Bob George & Aaron Schmidt for an awesome work.As I have told countless others "Give me the Bible and Classic Christianity and you can have the rest".BUY THE BOOK!!! "So it the Son sets you free you are free indeed" (John 8:36)GOD BLESS!Mike

5-0 out of 5 stars I fear "A Reader" did not read...
This book is not a "second edition of the classic first..." Its intended audience is CHILDREN, ages 4-8! "A reader" (first reviewer) apparently read it without noting that important fact. The first Classic Christianity is what will change your life, if you are an adult, either Christian, or not Christian.Every person who reads it asks the same question:"Why has this NEVER been explained to me, like this?"Please do not confuse the adult version of the book with the children's version.

3-0 out of 5 stars Good...
This I guess 2nd edition of Bob's CLASSIC 1st edition is good but hardly a succesor to his 1st WONDERFUL, 'Classic Christianity' which is one of the most important commentaries of the faith. Stick to the original it's so much better. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent Resource
As a head of a ministry involved in spiritual mapping this book is by far the best resource available. Though it may be cost prohibitive for some; it is extremely necessary for anyone or any group that is involved in spiritual mapping.

The cartography is excellent and detailed. The sections well defined and divided. All in all a reference that is required for all in spiritual mapping.

4-0 out of 5 stars An excellent reference on religion in America
...The authors of this reference work have expended a great deal of time and energy putting together a comprehensive review of the American religious experience from the earliest times through the 1990s.

The exquisite cartographic works presented by the authors, and the eloquent accompanying text will certainly be a pleasure to readers. In fact, readers will find that in many sections of the book, the authors' prose is nearly as colorful and equally as informative as any map displayed throughout the entire work. Religious scholars and students alike will find the bibliographies at the end of each section to be an indispensable springboard to deeper studies on select topics. In and of themselves, these bibliographies would make an excellent reference work. The authors should give significant thought to the development of a freestanding bibliography based on the bibliographic references provided in this work. This would be another significant piece of scholarship for the academic community studying this topic.

While I can't recommend this book as something for everyone's coffee table, the work fits in nicely with larger public libraries, special libraries and in the collections of colleges and universities. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Guided Prayer Journal-- Great for Children
My youngest child received a copy of this book as a birthday gift. We looked at it together, talked about the art, the suggestions. He has been using the book for five months now. Sometimes he shows me what he haswritten.

Congratulations to the authors and illustrators! My Journalincludes Bible passages, some appropriate questions about the Biblepassage, some contemporary connections, and prayer suggestions. It alsoincludes plenty of space for writing, responding to questions, even drawinga response. Space is included to write the names of people (and animals)that my son wants to pray for. This is a neat neat book. I hope thatkeeping a spiritual journal will become a part of my son's life. 5-0 out of 5 stars The last of the Passages books, and it's still cool!
The sixth and last of Paul McCusker's Passages series. This time, it is three young kids who enter Marus. Immediately split apart, Michelle finds herself in the palace of the Palatian king, and due to her eyes (eyes of different colors mean a messenger from the Unseen One) she is made an advisor to the King.

Danny and Wayne find themselves in the company of a ragtag rebel of the kingdom named Fendar, who is returned from exile to crusade for the Marusians' freedom.

Somehow, this book seems longer than the other five, but no less fun to read. An excellent re-telling of the story of Moses from the Old Testament. The book brings the story to life for young and old, and is a good buy for anyone. Once again, these books touch the "other worlds" lobe of the brain that makes us relish stories like Lord of the Rings, Narnia, and of course, Fendar's Legacy.

5-0 out of 5 stars The Best Series in the World
There is something about these books that want to make you read on... They are very powerfull books full of the Unseen One (god), and uplift christianity. 4-0 out of 5 stars What a great idea!
This book offers a unique way to start a conversation on many Christian topics. You will need several(2-6) characters for each skit, so either have a lot of puppets or a lot of volunteers ready before you buy it. Most of the skits are written for kids to act out, but I'm not sure that kids could memorize that much dialogue every week. Going with puppets would be best. Each skit will take approximately 5-10 minutes to put on and the setup is minimal. ... Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars Wonderfully illustrated....
While children may not have a hard time reading this book, I did...so, it is not for parents to read to their children if you have trouble with a very small font. That way my only disappointment. The size of the actual book is very convenient and would be easy for a child to hold. The font is smaller then most adult Bibles.

The illustrations are wonderful, the stories inspirational and retold in language that is clear and yet retains the original "poetry" of the Bible.

"So it is that we must make the most of what God gives us, and then we will be prepared to enter the kingdom of Heaven." -pg. 255, The Parable of the Talents

An index and a listing of "who's who" makes this more useful as a text. There are quotations from the King James Version sprinkled through the book. Color photographs of animals, plants and people puts the stories into context. All the pictures are explained, making reading this particular Bible a complete learning experience.

The stories are retold by Selina Hastings and an Introduction to the Bible explains that the Bible is a collection of books written by different people. Eric Thomas has even illustrated the Contents section. His artwork complements the style of Selina's writing.

Children love the stories of the Bible and I remember my first children's Bible very well. A belief in God is very comforting through life and a Children's Bible helps children to understand who God is and will increase their love for others.

Through my own studies as a child, I learned that God does love us, even when it seems he is nowhere to be found. The trust I have in God and my belief stems from learning about God and understanding his purpose in my life at an early age.

5-0 out of 5 stars The best children's Bible I've seen
One great difficulty in reading Bible stories to children is the wealth of unfamiliar things, ideas, and terms. The Dorling Kindersley retellings are not only short and elegant to read, but unfamiliar items are illustrated and explained right on the page. No searching around for the picture or definition of a "lulag" or "shekel." This makes the DK version especially "user-friendly" and understandable by kids. The wealth of scholar/consultants from different religious traditions assures that it authoritative and equally useful to kids of different religious backgrounds. The DK Children's Bible has become my gift of choice for newborns, whether the parents are dedicated Christians or only those who want their kids to see the Bible as great literature. A truly wonderful book.

5-0 out of 5 stars Sunday School Teacher recommends this Bible!
I have been a catechist, teaching elementary school age children for over four years. I use this book extensively in my sessions with the kids, because they listen...intently. Rather than many dumbed-down, Disneyesque versions of children's Bibles that I have seen, and rather than the somewhat lame materials offered by our church, the Children's Illustrated Bible connects with kids. It does not insult their intelligence, but enhances it. The rich liturgies of the Old and New Testaments are brought to life with vivid portraiture and detailed factual explanation. Want to know more about life in the Middle East in biblical times? It's there. Want to know what type of wood might have been used in the Ark? Or what mountain range Ararat belongs to?

My students, ages 5-9, are harsh critics. When something isn't real, or interesting, or meaningful, they simply turn off. Too many of the standard cut, color and paste exercises last five minutes with them. But when I pull this book out to read the wonderful stories of Noah, Moses, the Flight from Egypt, Jesus calming the sea, and so forth - the kids listen with mouths agape. They strain their necks to see the beautiful illustrations and pictures.

This Bible is an excellent gift for god-children, for nieces and nephews, for your kids. Even if you are not religious, your kids will benefit deeply from hearing and reading the wonderful tales of the Judeo-Christian tradition, and step up their cultural literacy significantly.

3-0 out of 5 stars A nice resource for Bible time with your kids
We use this to home church our children. I bought it for my 10 year old and he really looks forward to our Bible time together. This is a nice Bible with photos when possible, explanations of terms and situations which might be confusing. My son and I have been enjoying our time together reading through the stories. So far, the stories have followed along in sequence with not much left out. The language is straight forward, non-denominational.

The introduction to the book has some nice detailed drawings of the temple spoken of frequently in the O.T. as well as some other specific Hebrew ceremonies.

A nice addition to your home library.

3-0 out of 5 stars type too small
If this is intended for children, they should have considered the size of the type. It's smaller than what one finds in a phone book, and I don't know how any child could read it without having his eyes becoming weary. The look inside pages on the website are deceptive, as they show the type to be somewhat larger. ... Read more

Book Description

History Comes Alive In A Fun Way!

“God cannot support this free and blessed country unless Christians take a stand for what is right. They must vote for honest leaders and do their duty to their country as a part of their duty to God.” —Charles Finney

Down through our nation’s history, men and women have taken a stand for right. They came seeking religious freedom and found that their faith in God played a role in many life-changing decisions—in discovering new territories, in setting up new governments, in establishing what was fair and just for all. These are their stories. . . .

In God We Trust presents factual information in a fun and lively way. Each
narrative story highlights a person in history, focusing on how that person’s faith in God played an important part in the development of America. Christopher Columbus, Father Marquette, Abigail Adams, Daniel Webster, Abraham Lincoln, Hiram Revels, and many more, come alive through the colorful illustrations, delighting young and old alike.

These men and women of differing backgrounds and nationalities, brought to our nation a collective heritage of faith in God that stands the test of time and allows us the freedom of religion today. Their stories will build your faith and strengthen your trust in God for the future of our nation.

“This book will become a key for you to appreciate that our nation’s greatness and security rest upon faith in God.” —Senator John Ashcroft

5-0 out of 5 stars A Child's Treasure Chest of Stories
My nephew enjoyed receiving this book as a gift, with its prominent picture of Abraham Lincoln on the front, along with other famous Americans. Many of these stories cover the same individuals he is studying in school. It is always nice to let children read outside books. All the Americans discussed have made true contributions to our young republic, and serve well as role models. A recommended book for any public or private library.

5-0 out of 5 stars A "must read" and perfect for your home library
This book is a treasure - it seems to be one of a kind! It provides a coupling of American History and people of Christian faith. The very short stories about fifty people from 1000 through 1900A.D.(from Lief Ericson through Katherine Lee Bates), are factual, brief, and interesting with colorful illustrations. My four-year old son loves this book to be read to him, especially at bedtime. Although (and I am guessing) this book was probably intended for middle-school aged children, I believe it is terrific for all ages----even myself!--as I have not only "brushed up" on my memory of American History, but have also learned a great deal from reading this book. It is non-offensive to any age group. For parents who want to give their children an early start in this subject matter (especially those who are home-schooling or following the Glenn Doman approach to educaation----this is outstanding and a must for your home library.) I hope the author produces more books of similar quality! ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Young readers are introduced to the holy month of Ramadan
Ramadan is the holiest month of the Islamic calendar and I think most Americans know at least that much if they had no clue as to what the holiday celebrates or what Muslim families do during that time. In this book Suhaib Hamid Ghazi answers all the questions young readers would have about Ramadan. The information is provided in terms of a story about how Hakeem and his family observe Ramadan while living in the United States. Young Readers will learn about how Ramadan was the month is which the Quran, the holy book of Islam, was revealed to the prophet Muhammed. This will learn how Muslims do not eat or drink anything during the day, rising before dawn to share "suhur," a special meal, and breaking their fast after sundown by eating a date and then having a big family meal called "Iftar." They will also learn about the other ways in which Muslims celebrate their faith during the holy month. The back of the book contains a Glossary that explains various words and greetings (such as "Ramadan Mubarak" meaning "Have a happy and blessed Ramadan") that are used throughout the book.

The illustrations for this book are by Omar Rayyan, who includes borders and panels in a more traditional Islamic style to represent not only the rich and exotic history of Islam but to create a visual contrast with Muslims living in contemporary America. Of course the lives of such Americans are of more curiosity today than they were when this book was written in 1996 and telling the story of Ramadan from the perspective of young Hakeem should prove quite effective in giving young readers a book of reference. The important point of this book is captured in an illustration when Rayyan has modeled on Norman Rockwell's famous painting of a family at Thanksgiving, better known as "Freedom From Want." I do not know if younger readers will appreciate the importance of that symbolism, but I sure do.

3-0 out of 5 stars Beautiful, but not what I was looking for
As other reviewers mentioned, this is a beautifully illustrated book. Common, day-to-day words used by Muslims (Imam, Suhur, Zakah) are explained in an understandable way, so I could see this being a reasonable way to introduce the concepts to non-Muslim children (or even adults). Overall, however, I was disappointed. The interesting, personable little details about Hakeem were heavily weighed down by the "adult talking to child" background information about every last little aspect of Ramadan. I would guess that a quick brush past two dozen new vocabulary words, painstakingly defined, will not actually teach those concepts to non-Muslim children. Meanwhile, I fear that the Muslim children for whom I intended this book as a gift will not find enough story among the definitions and explanations to hold their attention. We have so many stories set at Christmas-time that do not attempt to explain the entire Christian religion and all of the symbolism and rituals of Christmas... I haven't been able to find such stories to purchase for my young Muslim friends. Must every book about them be a child-sized textbook on Muslim faith and practices?

5-0 out of 5 stars Incredible book
We are Christians, but I want my children to grow up knowing about religious diversity and learning about the beliefs of other religions. It's hard to respect what you don't know.

I'm very much impressed with this book. The text is very clear and gives an abundance of information on both Islam and Ramadan. The illustrations are excellent and fit the text beautifully.

Whatever your faith (or age), this book will provide a beautiful introduction to the religion of Islam and to their holiest holiday.

5-0 out of 5 stars Thanks!
I am so glad that Ramadan received such as fitting tribute in writing. So many holiday books are boring descriptions of a holiday and forget to be interesting. This book taught me about Ramadan and interested me too. I would not hesitate to read this book to my students.

5-0 out of 5 stars A wonderful book
I purchased this book for my toddler at the beginning of Ramadan this year. We want to start teaching him about Islam. I found myself reading and enjoying it. My husband also got to read it and loved it. I'm planning to send copies to my son's grandparents and recommending it to all of our Muslim friends. ... Read more

My 3-year old son LOVES this book. My husband reads it to him multiple times every night at bedtime, at his request. It has a great lesson & the illustrations are wonderful. Adam is certainly a character that little people can relate to.

5-0 out of 5 stars A (Furry) Parable about Love
Cute loveable Adam Raccoon lives with King Aren in Master's Wood. He is just like a small child, and King Aren is the loving guide who teaches Adam about life's great lessons. This is a wonderful adaptation of Jesus's parable of the Wedding Feast when the honoured guests rejected their invitations and the doors were thrown open to the poor and rejected, whom Jesus loves equally. My children ask for this story over and over again. All of the Adam Raccoon books in the series are great. ... Read more
