5-0 out of 5 stars Beautiful intro to Bible stories for your 3-5 year old child
The Usborne Children's Bible includes about 45 stories, half Old Testament, half New Testament. Each story is told in about three pages on average (some have only one page, the crucifixion is told in seven pages) accompanied by colorful and more importantly beautiful illustrations. This edition is really wonderful for parents who disdain children's Bibles with goofy cartoonish drawings or the opposite problem, drawings that are boring and colorless.

The text is faithful yet simplified for a child. The Easter story does not depict the crucifixion graphically yet the story does not shy away from what really happened. "The guards took Jesus away and dressed him in a purple robe, pressed a crown made of thorns on his head and put a stick in his hand. They knelt in front of him, laughing and jeering. 'Hail, King of the Jews,' they mocked, beating him and spitting at him."

The New Testament section covers the Annunciation to Pentecost, emphasizing the life of Jesus rather than trying to cover the entirety of the New Testament. The Old Testament section covers Genesis to Jonah, again emphasizing familiarity with the most accessible stories rather than a complete retelling of the history of the Hebrew people.

We are a homeschooling family and I would recommend this if you think the Golden Children's Bible to be too intimidating for your child because of its length or size. Buy the Usborne Miniature Edition (about 6x8 inches) if you'd like your child to be able to carry the book around by himself.

Highly recommended as a nightly read-aloud or a special gift for baptisms, Christmas, Easter or birthdays.

5-0 out of 5 stars Really charming kid's Bible
The Usborne Mini Children's Bible is a great book! It is exactly the same text as the original version of Usborne Children's Bible, but in a size that is just right for younger children to handle. The book contains 44 favorite Bible stories, all very accurate retellings from Scripture, and is beautifully and colorfully illustrated. Great for reading to very small children, and early readers will be able to handle it on their own. It's my number one choice for a Bible story book for my grandkids!

4-0 out of 5 stars Colorful tales from the bible
I bought this book for my 4 year old son. He loves hearing stories from it. I think the pictures are really nice and colorful. The stories are short so we can usually read at least two or three before bedtime. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Hymn's for A Kid's Heart
The CD is excellent quality for all ages with timeless tunes of inspirational songs we can recall forever. The stories contained in the book are delightful to share with the younger generation as well as read at bedtime for any age. The music is uplifting and will stay within your heart all day. Simply marvelous. So many uses. A must for young and young at heart. God bless the authors and musicians who have brought this to our ears and eyes.

5-0 out of 5 stars Hymns for a Kids Heart
This is a supberb means to teach my grandson about God's Word through hymns. The selection of hymns is very good. As a musician, I am highly pleased with the quality of the singing and of the arrangements. I hope to share this with many of my friends and family this Christmas. I highly recommend it.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great tool for a kid's choir
'Thank you for Hymns for a Kid's Heart. It is beautiful in every way. The singing on the CD is so well done'it is a fine example of quality children's singing as well as literature. I am planning to incorporate the book into the Children's Choir program at FPC this fall. I will include the cost of the book in the children's activity fee. The teachers will then use that book as their Bible study portion of the rehearsal. The following week, the particular hymn they studied will be a part of the worship service! I think it will be a great way to give the children insight into God and into the people who put our faith into music. Thanks again."

"What a wonderful new book. I love it! The idea is great. I heard y'all on Focus last year speaking about your other hymns project and thought it was great. I was even more excited to see one for kids. The CD has been playing non-stop in our car for the past 4 days. What a blessing to have children that are requesting Holy, Holy, Holy over and over! Your stories on the writers of each hymn are wonderful and will be a nice homeschool music history course!" ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Ideal as a manual for adults working with youth
Insightfully written by Frank Mercadante (whose experience in youth ministry training extends to being the executive director of the not-for-profit corporation Cultivation Ministries), Positively Dangerous is ideal means to help spread the passion of faith among teenagers today. Stressing love for God, love for one another, authenticity, integrity, and making the most of evangelistic opportunities, Positively Dangerous is an enthusiastic guide incorporating mentoring, peer training, and small-class activities. Ideal as a manual for adults working with youth, Positively Dangerous is especially recommended reading for young people seeking to embracing and sharing the Good News within the context of the Catholic community.

5-0 out of 5 stars Inspiring us to our larger life, through our everyday living
This book will inspire you to live the great, impactful, positive and giving life all of us of faith believe in. It inspires the reader to strive for great things. It also shows us how that life is a collection of small, wonderful choices we make in every day, and every interaction. Upon reading this book you will want to share it with all your friends of faith. I ordered several copies for friends after reading only the first 3 chapters! I especially liked the fact that it's stories apply to people of faith across many religions.

5-0 out of 5 stars Talk the Walk
We've all heard the expression, "You have to walk the talk." In other words, practice what you profess to believe. I liked the book because Mercadante makes a good case in Chapter 8 on "talking the walk," reminding us that evangelization is an important part of the Christian life. Too many of us are 'closet Christians' afraid to let our faith show in even the smallest ways, like praying before meals in restaurants. I like the book because it challenges us to talk the walk, and gives guidelines on how to do it.

5-0 out of 5 stars Good Reminders
While this is a book directed at teens, it offeres a strong reminder of what anyone can do to be a person of faith whose faith will make a difference in the lives of others. I was particularly taken with the chapter that reminded me that in order to have a strong personal relationship with the Lord that I needed to spend more time in prayer. I would strongly recommend that anyone who is interested in strengthening their faith read this book. It is a quick, easy read that will make a difference in your life and the lives of those you give a copy to as a gift.

5-0 out of 5 stars Inspires Both Youth and Adults
I read Positively Dangerous because it claimed to offer a chance for teens to live a passionate and committed Christian life. And I was delighted to discover that Frank Mercadante has written a book that appeals directly to young people's innate desire to find an ideal that they can devote themselves to. But I was also pleasantly surprised that the book also spoke to me, a sixty-two-year-old grandfather, and challenged me to renew my commitments and revive my disciplines. Frank has a way of speaking personally and directly to the heart of his reader. He writes well, gives practical advice, and uses many examples to illustrate his points. Young people and older folks like me will take away great benefits from Positively Dangerous. ... Read more

Conversations with God for Teens reads like a rap session at achurch youth group, where teenagers discuss everything they ever wanted to knowabout life but were too afraid to ask God. Once again author Neale Donald Walschacts as the verbal conduit, showing teenagers how easy it is to converse withthe divine. After the enormous success of his previous Conversations with Godbooks, Walsch was asked to write a book for teenagers. So he collected questionsfrom teenagers around the world, brought them into his private dialogue withGod, and then printed God's answers on the page. So when Claudia, age 16, fromPerth, Australia, asks, "Why can't I just have sex with everybody? What's the bigdeal?", the answer God offers her is: "Nothing you do will ever be okay witheverybody. 'Everybody' is a large word. The real question is can you have sexand have it be okay with you?" There's no doubt that the casualquestion-and-answer format will help make God feel welcoming and accessible toteens. And the introduction by Alanis Morissette raises the "cool" factorconsiderably. Nonetheless, it's not for all teenagers: older adolescents (17 andolder) may find it hokey or manipulative, and preteens (10 to 12) could findsome of the questions too mature. --Gail Hudson ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Truth
This is a great book for teens. I have two teen boys and I am happy that they have this book. It's very no-nonsense and approachable, all about love and acceptance - things that are important and kids want to talk about. It makes the reader think, and shows how we can have to take responsibility for our own lives and our own decisions.

1-0 out of 5 stars Not for true Christians
I must first start out in saying that in no way am I a Pat Robertson, Jerry Falwell type of Christian. I'm extremely liberal, in fact. I bought this book because I thought it'd shed some light on some of my own beliefs, plus I love Alanis Morissette.
First of all, I don't care who you are, do not presume that you can convey the voice of God to me. Do not type on a page His words, unless you have a Bible verse to back it up.
Secondly, the author totally disregards the Bible in this book...Sex? You want to have sex? Go right ahead, do what you want! Is that really the message you want to give your teenage kids? I'm only 17 myself, but goodness...as if there isn't enough pressure in the world already..
There are far better books out there on God than this one, and no, they aren't always extremely judgemental and hypocritical.

5-0 out of 5 stars A truly blessed work ...
...FREE YOUR MIND. Share the beautiful, loving possibilites of God. Share your ideas. Share this book.

Thank you Neale Donald Walsch for having the courage to share your valid, wonderful version of God. I prefer this God to the horrible, judgemental God of Dobson & the "Christian Right".

I am getting my Master's degree in High School Guidance Counseling, and will be sure to share this book as often as needed.

5-0 out of 5 stars GREAT BOOK
I just want to share what i think, first i think this is an amazing non religous book, the author is not having a conversation with GOD (the one the you all believe in)this is the god that we all have inside the one that we all want to believe in the one that could really change the world! this book says taht god is life itself and we all are life itself , so we are all god pieces of god , life is god.. we have created the world ( you should read some antropologist book as well) nothing exist without the meaning that we gave to anything without that meaning theres nothing.
well i think everybody in the world should read a conversations with god book , specially teens , that way the world would be a lot more different.
excelente introduccion by Alanis Morissette...the final part of the foreword it is just what we all would like to hear.

really great book!
why it is so hard to catholics and christians to accept? anything different? wel.. this book does nothing but accept .

1-0 out of 5 stars Another dangerous book ...
Before you buy this book, read the sample pages provided by Amazon and you will get at least a small hint that this is a dangerous book. The real danger, however, lies in the pages that Amazon chose not to show us. Very bad stuff here from this secular humanist author! If, on the other hand, you believe that nothing is wrong, that "anything goes" and "if it feels good, do it," perhaps this is a book you will want your teen to read. In my opinion, kids deserve better than this relativistic tripe. ... Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars Good detail; adequate illustration; strange translation
I bought this book to use in my family's regular devotionals. I've been looking for a collection of well-illustrated Bible stories that is complete and accurate, yet written so preschoolers can understand. Although my search has not been exhaustive, this is as close as I've found.

This collection of Bible stories is apparently from a translation called "The International Children's Bible," an attempt at a Bible that children can read and understand. I give the effort a mixed review. For example, the Ark of the Covenant is translated as "God's Holy Box," which is too imprecise for my taste. Yet the text is overall easy to read.

The illustrations are adequate, and probably just right for children who know how to read. I'm reading these stories to my preschool-age children, however, and wish the illustrations were brighter and more engaging.

I like the prayer starters that appear at the end of each story. They help focus the reader's attention on what the story was supposed to teach. The included memory verses back up each story's message from elsewhere in the Bible.

This book is arranged in the same order as the Bible, but that arrangement is not well highlighted. For example, the story of Jesus's birth as told in Luke appears after the reader has already read a dozen stories about Jesus's ministry from Matthew and Mark. As a result, children might be confused, ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent Use of Spiritual terms
My spiritual alphabet book is a great introduction for children to spiritual terms in a very entertaining yet poignant way. The rhyming verses along with the beautiful illustrations paint a wonderful picture of all things larger than we are.

This book is a great alternative to alphabet books because it sends a beautiful message along with teaching children their ABCs.

4-0 out of 5 stars My Spiritual Alphabet
I purchased this book for my grandchildren, ages 7 & 5. It is a lovely book, well written and illustrated. I also have Holly Bea's first book, "Where Does God Live". She makes the reading easy for our first grader and the pictures attract the 5 year old. Get's the point across without being preachy and stays entertaining to the end. I highly recommend it to everyone with small children.

The alphabet never felt or looked so good! My 3 and 5 year old kids LOVE this beautifully illustrated, joyful book. The book teaches us about letters and about life, and the pictures give concrete examples of the spiritual concepts. "Believing in things I cannot see" could be too abstract for a 3 year old--but this books pairs it with a whimsical picture of a girl and a puppy expectantly watching a garden. Now my kids "get it." The book is non-denominational, non-preachy, and great for a boy or girl. Forget the boring "A is for Apple." Kids will remember this book long after the alphabet is committed to memory! ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Lifework: Finding your purpose in life
LifeWork is a unique book in that it combines information on vocation and mission with a built in "workbook" approach for planning, all from a Catholic perspective.

I appreciate the practical nature of LifeWork, which is geared to high school and college age youth. This book is ideal for older teens in catechetical programs, Catholic high school seniors, and youth ministry programs. Having read extensively, I can confidently assert that there is nothing like it on the market today.

The complementary LifeWork video is a great intro to the concepts detailed in the book. In combination, the book and video form a complete package, a program for "life work" discernment and planning.

If you are looking for a "handbook" on vocations, work, and decision-making from a Catholic perspective, this is the book for you.

5-0 out of 5 stars A book that belongs in every Catholic family
In the course of my work, I receive dozens of books and manuscripts for review. Most find their way to a dusty corner of my office. Not so with Life Work: Finding Your Purpose in Life by Rick Sarkisian. Being the father of three teens, I immediately recognized the value of this book to help my older children discover their life purpose. I took Life Work home and asked all of my teens to read it. I then used Life Work as a starting point in my discussions with my teenagers about calling, career, and college.

Some people expect a book of this type to be like a magic pill that once swallowed will instantly reveal God's will for their lives. Truly discovering God's will requires effort. This book will not replace the personal disciplines necessary to discover God's will, but it certainly provides the path to follow for the honest and diligent seeker.

It starts with the foundation of rooting ourselves in God himself as a prelude to finding his will. Rick Sarkisian then describes a truly Catholic and historic Christian understanding of a personal vocation. Clear descriptions and practical advice is given for each of the four states of life: marriage, the priesthood, consecrated life and the permanent diaconate.

Life Work challenges the reader to use one's God-given abilities to bring glory to God, no matter which state of life one is called to. The final section of the book includes an extremely useful guide in making plans and decisions regarding career, training, and educational opportunities. Rick Sarkisian's twenty years of experience in professional vocational and career development is condensed for easy understanding and application for the reader. I have had the opportunity of not only using Life Work in my own family, but I have also recommended it as the finest Catholic book of its kind to families throughout North America. This is a book that belongs in every Catholic family.

A final thought - many parents end up paying for five or six years of college before their children obtain an undergraduate degree. Just think - preventing one switch of a college major in an effort to "find oneself" will pay for this book a thousandfold. Using a tool like Life Work can help any concerned parent direct his child into the path he or she should follow.

5-0 out of 5 stars This Book is a Prerequisite For College Students!
I was so happy to find a book that gave my two college age children some concrete advice on how to find their vocation. It was a new concept for them to look at their college studies, careers, marriages and families, as God given vocations. Including God in their daily decisions gave them a direction that they trust. In a day and age where so much of life is confusing, to look at their lives as a vocation, has helped them to warmly embrace their future and enhanced their relationship with God. Thank You Rick Sarkisian, keep books like this coming!

4-0 out of 5 stars Lifework Can Help to Hear and Answer God's Call
The book is helpful in detailing both how we are called by God and why and gives us some practical ways of being open to hear and answer that call. When read along with viewing the video of the same name, I feel it can be very good in encouraging people to see the importance of hearing and listening to God's call and in eventually answering that call. The book shows how we are called both to a way of life and a mission in life and how to distinguish and unite them in one's personal and communal lives. As a vocation director, I find the book and video very helpful in introducing people to the idea of God's call, our vocation, and how that relates to career and work. If you are looking for a way to begin discerning your own call or helping your children or other young people to do the same, this book, along with the video, is for you.

5-0 out of 5 stars Catholic teens need this book!
I have used this book to help my two teenage sons focus on the many choices they have ahead. This book has a practical formula to choose a career that uses the unique talents God has given each of us. It's never too soon to begin thinking and praying about God's plan for your children. ...
