The Pockets Encyclopedia--which must be the world's smallest one-volume encyclopedia--gives new meaning to the idea of ready reference. This heavily illustrated mini-encyclopedia with maximum answer potential would make a thoughtful gift for just about anyone, especially students and trivia buffs. A vast amount of information is thematically organized into nine sections: Space, Planet Earth, The Living World, The Human Body, Science and Technology, Transportation, The World, People and Society, and History. Useful time lines delineate major developments in the history of buildings, art, music, and literature. Additional reference tables and indexes are also included. The curious reader can find out about crystals and cells, maps and mammals, rockets and reptiles, and places from Afghanistan to Zimbabwe. Only one caveat--the print is tiny. But how else could they have included 10,000 facts, figures, and statistics? (Ages 12 to adult) --Marcie Bovetz ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Book for Sports Nuts of all ages
I highly recommend this book for both readerly and non-readerly sport nuts.

Eyewitness Sports has provided both my sons, ages 5 and 2, with hours of reading pleasure. It provides pictures of "old" and "new" pieces of sports equipment along with photos of people playing the sports. The text gives enough information that it's interesting to read from the adult point of view, and the pix provide plenty of interest from the non-reader viewpoint.

This book is one of very few decent sports picture encyclopedia-type book that I've found for kids. Most of the other sports books, in my experience, focus only on one sport. Eyewitness Sports, however, provides readers (and non-readers) with info and pictures about a wide variety of sports from the vastly popular (basketball, baseball etc) to the vastly not (curling for example). :)

My kids love the Eyewitness series of books, and this edition is no exception. I highly recommend it for sports nuts of all ages. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Perfect book for Warner Bros. cartoon fans
I have to admit I had reservations when I saw this at the store. I had not been impressed by the Superman volume or the other editions to come out under this series because so much of it was devoted to modern versions of the main characters. But this book is a visual treat, as well as being very informative about the history of the animated cartoon at Warner Bros. Many model sheets, cels, posters, etc. are here indepth throughout this wonderful volume.

Beck has written extensively about the WB cartoons before, so DK made a great choice in picking him for this book. Even though the targeted audience for this series is kids, the adult, like me, will love this beautifully put-together homage to the best cartoons to come out of Hollywood. I am so glad very little in this book talks about recent efforts; instead, they chose the Golden Age (the 30s, 40s, 50s) and I couldn't be happier.

5-0 out of 5 stars Beck comes through!!!
Jerry Beck's Looney Tunes Book for DK Publishing comes through as a real winner. With more "in-jokes" than DK's previous Disney edition, this text is sure to please.

The work shows. From the (every character who appeared in a WB cartoon)painting/picture that appears on the inside cover to the comic book covers chosen, this is a fun read.

One of the best "jokes" and keeping with the personality of the characters, Daffy appears on the last page of the Bugs section, announcing that "this is where the real fun begins."

It's great. Some of the "extras" which include humerous sections on the Road Runner cartoons, and a mentioning of some of the gags used in those animated flicks.

Fun for the kids, and I'm sure Beck must have enjoyed putting this together. These books are great for the youngsters to get an overview of the history of WB, and the same for the Disney edition.

Beck also spends a bit of time on the new Looney Toons film coming up, and the recent Duck Dodgers series. It would have been nice if a few pages could have been spent on Tiny Toons, which did have some ties to the older characters. Two pages on Space Jam would have been nice.

Hmm. DK has done Disney and now Looney Tones, I wonder if DK will do Woody Woodpecker/Universal animation next. Maybe Paramount's Popeye. I'd hate for this one to be the last of these. ... ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Great Introduction to the world of Ancient Rome
Being a bit of a fan of the Roman Empire, I had taken a look at this book and may I say that it was very good, for a beginners book. The photography was amazing and it was chock full of info for those who had not encountered Roman history before.

Really reccomended.

5-0 out of 5 stars Introduce your children to REAL history

And -- these pictures are real! They're beautiful museum-quality photos of all things related to ancient Rome, accompanied by informative captions and text.

Learn about life in Rome, the slaves and emperors who lived there, and SEE the objects they used everyday. If you know someone (young or old) who is fascinated by ancient Rome, then you must introduce them to this book!

5-0 out of 5 stars Fantastic Photography Brings Ancient Rome to Life!
This is an outstanding book to add to your classroom or homeschooling library. If you don't live near the British Museum or Museum of London, then this book is the next best thing! See a Roman gladius (sword) and gold and silver scabbards. Examine a Roman soldier's armor and impedimenta (baggage). Find out what life was like for women and children. There are photographs of actual children's toys, gladiatorial helmets, chariots, theater masks, even medical instruments and leather sandals.

The photography in this book is fabulous. Students can use this book to get ideas for reports or designing models. The pictures are bright and beautiful and really make the ancient Roman culture come to life! ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Enjoy the archeological treasures of Ancient Greece
When I saw all the amazing photographs in the DK Travel Guide to Greece I figured their book on "Ancient Greece" would be equally impressive and I was correct. This book consists of a series of 2-page spreads dealing with various topics from Minoan civilization to Alexander and the Hellenistic age. Each spread has a basic paragraph of text from author Anne Pearson and then the rest is devoted to color photographs of various archeological treasures (or contemporary recreations) and informative captions. You will see dozens of examples of statutes and friezes, pottery and art of mythological figures taken from pots, many of which I have never seen before although I am have been actively looking for quite some time now because of a mythology course I am teaching. There are also contemporary photographs of historic ruins scattered throughout the book and recreations of Greek clothes, hair dressings, meals, and other aspects of daily life.

Readers young and old alike will find this book a great supplemental work whether they are reading a World History textbook or Homer's "Iliad." Certainly what you see within these pages will help you create more realistic images in your minds eyes when you read about the golden age in Athens, the ancient Olympic games, or the myth of Theseus and the Minotaur. "The Los Angeles Times Book Review" described these Eyewitness Books as being "Like a mini-museum between the covers of a book," and that is certainly the case. Even better, the items pictured come from museums around the world, from the British Museum and the National Gallery to the Vatican and the Delphi Museum. I am planning a trip to Greece early next year and this book has certain raised my expectations for what I can hope to see in the various museums I intend to visit in Athens, Delphi, Mycenea, et al. I have particularly enjoyed seeing the ancient myths I have been teaching represented on urns and pots, several choice examples of which are pictured herein.

4-0 out of 5 stars Vivid Photographs!
The best part of this book is the photographs. They are plentiful, taking up as much room as the print, and useful, too. They help you to see which of the styles of architecture is which, the layout of a Greek home, and many other things that would be hard to visualize if told only in words. This is a convenient book to have at home -as are the other eyewitness books; a quick reference, and also a plain fun read. Though it is supposed to be for children aged 9 to 12, I think many teens would enjoy this book. ... Read more

Young girls obsessed with Cinderella, Ariel the mermaid, or Jasmine from Aladdin will revel in DK's 48-page "essential guide" to Disney princesses. Much like DK's usual approach to marine life or history, the creators briefly describe the characteristics and habitat of each princess in a highly visual format. For example, Snow White facts include what everyone knows (lips as red as roses, cheerful, hated by the queen, etc.), but readers will also find colorful, full-page illustrations of Snow White's world, complete with Dark Forest, the cottage where the Seven Dwarfs live, etc. All of the princess characters, including that of Belle and Aurora, are similarly examined. Parents whose children have seen the Disney princess movies 8,000 times each may be happy to direct their kids' attention to a book that summarizes the plots of the various stories and brings the characters to life. Scenes from Disney films and cutout Disney artwork will surely please fans. (Ages 6 and older) --Karin Snelson ... Read more

I have enjoyed several of the Eyewitness Books, ("Like a mini-museum between the covers of a book" according to "The Los Angels Times Book Review"), and picked up this one because I was reading Michael Crichton's "Timeline." That particular novel involves time travel back to Medieval times, and while the book involves descriptions of clothing, castles and weaponry, and a few sketches, I was looking for something that would help visualization. So "Medieval Life" was a virtual gold mine in that respect.

Andrew Langley covers medieval Europe from life on a country manor to the crowded streets of a developing town. We see how peasant's dressed, how medieval beds were constructed, their cooking utensils, and how to build a cathedral. Langely pays as much attention to the work of stonemasons as he does to jousting knights and how to guild letters on manuscripts. In short, you get a little bit of everything. There are two dozen sections covering running a manor, holy orders, and medieval music. This certainly helped me visualize the daring and dastardly doings in Crichton's novel. There is something of a resurgence of interest in Medieval times, which unenlightened folks used to refer to as the Dark Ages (darn those Renaissance revisionists), and books like "Medieval Life" amply illustrate why this is the case.

5-0 out of 5 stars Limited info, but great pictures
DK eyewitness books are some of the greatest non-fiction books around. The distinctive white background and high-quality photography gives this book an edge over any other nonfiction picture book. And -- these pictures are real! They're beautiful museum-quality photos of all things related to medival times, accompanied by informative captions and text.

Learn about medieval life, from peasants to rich folks, their clothes, food, music, etc. The strength in this book lies in the photos, however, and this book isn't an exhaustive history of medieval times. Rather, it serves as a hook to interest people, and induce them to dig further, while giving them a bit more knowledge.

If you know someone (young or old) who is fascinated by medieval times, then you must introduce them to this book!

1-0 out of 5 stars This book wasn't the greatest.
Knights, Castles, Medieval Life: Boring. I love Eyewitness books and I like a lot of the Water Eyewitness books, but Eyewitness books like Knights, Castles and Medieval Life just don't appeal to me. Eyewitness Medieval Life gets 1 star because in about 1 or 2 places in the book it is kind of intresting but other then that this book is very plain and boring.

5-0 out of 5 stars Eyewitness Books are the BEST!
Knights, castles and medieval ways are vividly brought to life in this excellent book. Eyewitness books give you all the information you need in short text and captioned pictures...and they keep children's attention! ... Read more

"They carried all the emotional baggage of men who might die. Grief, terror, love, longing--these were intangibles, but the intangibles had their own mass and specific gravity, they had tangible weight. They carried shameful memories. They carried the common secret of cowardice.... Men killed, and died, because they were embarrassed not to."

A finalist for both the 1990 Pulitzer Prize and the National Book Critics Circle Award, The Things They Carried marks a subtle but definitive line of demarcation between Tim O'Brien's earlier works about Vietnam, the memoir If I Die in a CombatZone and the fictionalGoing After Cacciato, and this sly, almost hallucinatory book that is neither memoir nor novel nor collection of short stories but rather an artful combination of all three. Vietnam is still O'Brien's theme, but in this book he seems less interested in the war itself than in the myriad different perspectives from which he depicts it. Whereas Going After Cacciato played with reality, The Things They Carried plays with truth. The narrator of most of these stories is "Tim"; yet O'Brien freely admits that many of the events he chronicles in this collection never really happened. He never killed a man as "Tim" does in "The Man I Killed," and unlike Tim in "Ambush," he has no daughter named Kathleen. But just because a thing never happened doesn't make it any less true. In "On the Rainy River," the character Tim O'Brien responds to his draft notice by driving north, to the Canadian border where he spends six days in a deserted lodge in the company of an old man named Elroy while he wrestles with the choice between dodging the draft or going to war. The real Tim O'Brien never drove north, never found himself in a fishing boat 20 yards off the Canadian shore with a decision to make. The real Tim O'Brien quietly boarded the bus to Sioux Falls and was inducted into the United States Army. But the truth of "On the Rainy River" lies not in facts but in the genuineness of the experience it depicts: both Tims went to a war they didn't believe in; both considered themselves cowards for doing so. Every story in The Things They Carried speaks another truth that Tim O'Brien learned in Vietnam; it is this blurred line between truth and reality, fact and fiction, that makes his book unforgettable. --AlixWilber ... I loved this book very much, and I was surprised how much information it gives you. I love Mark Cotta Vaz and I read his decription books. The book is exellent exept for one thing, it is not very detailed. It has the best pictures from the Star Wars Special Edition and it covers everything. I would definatly recommend this book.

4-0 out of 5 stars Pretty Good
This book is a great starter book for the ameture Star Wars fan. It has great detailed pictures and gives a good amount of info of different things that exist in the Star Wars universe. If you want a lot on info (instead of pictures) get The Guide to the Star Wars Universe. I'd rate it 9.9 it's not perfect but it's about as close as you can get! Still if you want picture, get this book.

5-0 out of 5 stars An Excellent Resource!
I bought this book a while ago, because it looked informative and interesting. (Not to mention that I will be starting high school next year!) I started to read it, and was very glad I had bought it. Of course it tells you all that usual stuff about doing what you want, finding out what you like, and stuff like that, but it also has very practical information. It even has other resources and places you can go for help. I really recommend this book. Read this book, it's worth it.

5-0 out of 5 stars Informative, readable, and full of good advice.
Susan Abel Lieberman has written a book that should be on the shelf of all high-school students and their parents. The Real High School Handbook is filled with solid information and advice, and colorful examples from the lives of students. In an engaging conversational tone, Lieberman challenges her young readers to take responsibility for their own futures-- and on page after page, she shows them specific ways to do that. It's clear that Lieberman has spent a lot of time time with high school students and knows the ins and outs of the high school scene. She has heard it all from--"it's the teachers fault,"--to "I just can't do it." Her answers to students' familiar laments are good humored, and straightforward. She's almost certain to capture the attention of students complaining about teachers, when she writes,"Just as every batter doesn't face an equally good pitcher--or umpire--every student doesn't get an equally good teacher. Whether a teacher is good or not,'fair'or not, the student, like the batter, is the one being graded on what happens." The Real High School Handbook is a terrific bedside-table book. Students will find themselves turning to it again and again--when it's time to make summer plans, calculate GPA's, apply to college or a job. They'll also find it invaluable when they want encouragement and reassurance. The Real High School handbook is a much needed guide to success for all students! ... Read more
