5-0 out of 5 stars Truly a mini-museum between the covers of a book
The L.A. Times Book Review said the Eyewitness Books series is "Like a mini-museum between the covers of a book" and that is certainly the perfect description. When you leaf through "Mythology" and see all the color photographs of artifacts and artwork, you will see that this book is a short course in Comparative Mythology, rather than just Classical Mythology. The book approaches the concept of mythology as "religion in story form," and Neil Philip's book is structured by concepts rather than cultures. Each of the two-dozen two-page spreads is devoted to such things as the creation of the world, making humankind, floods and storms, the elements, ancestor worship, superheroes, gods of war, mythical beasts and sacred sites. "Mythology" accounts for dozens of cultures, from the Aborigines of Australia to the Native American Zuni people. I do not know if students today still bother to draw things for their reports or if they just download photographs from the Internet, but "Mythology" is the sort of book where you will find something to draw for any report on any aspect of mythology you have to do for school. These items are taken from literally dozens of major museums around the world and you are pretty much guaranteed to see lots of fascinating objects you have never seen before. Usually students become interested in mythology through the study of the myths of the ancient Greeks. "Mythology" will get them interested in the myths of other cultures as well. Besides, it is fun just to look at the pictures. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars The Best Wonder Woman Retrospective Yet
What is so great about the book is that it is about a woman character that often does not get the great treatment that Superman or Batman sets. And we finally see that people are paying more attention to her, and her mythology, finally.

What I love about it is the fact that almost everyone in the Modern series has been included, and a few of the ones from the classic series as well.

Great going DC.

4-0 out of 5 stars Wonder Woman Never Looked Better
This is THE illustrated guide to Wonder Woman and her mythology. Completely loaded with pictures from all aspects of Wonder Woman's world, the book is wonderfully organized and presented. Although now slightly outdated (due to Greg Rucka's amazing run of the comic) the book is the best way to start getting to know Wonder Woman and what she's about. Not as informative as "Wonder Woman-The Complete History", it's still a fitting tribute to Diana and all that she stands for.

4-0 out of 5 stars Fantastic Guide to the Comic Book Wonder Woman
Quite simply, this is a very beautifully done book covering the comic book heroine Wonder Woman and her various supporting cast members. The book is split section by section covering the 60+ year history of the Amazon Princess. Wonder Woman's powers and origin are described with gorgeously drawn and colored photos highlighting each aspect. The book then goes on to describe the various tools Diana uses from the lasso, invisible plane, to the lesser known items such as The Gauntlet of Atlas and Wings of Hermes. Wonder Woman's family and friends (some of which are also costumed Wonder Women) each have thier own pages also, as well as Diana's enemies detailing their abilities and reasons for siding against the super powered heroine. This is a great book to get for those who are interested in learning more about the comic book version of the character. As a part of a series of books detailing DC Comics' best known heroes, this detailed reference guide is also an easy to follow book. For those sticklers of accuracy, the book does have a few errors printed in it. A few of those are: the Amazon characters Pythia and Phthia are mistaken for each other and thus their histories are melded together, the book states that the evil Dark Angel created Wonder Woman's sister Donna Troy when in fact it was the Amazon Magala, villain Armbruster is stated to have been Silver Swan's pen pal when in fact he was the person who made her instead, mobster Paulie Longo is said to have hired the Cheetah in Boston when in fact it was fellow mobster Julianna Sazia, the godesses Hestia and Demeter are misidentified, and the index lists the Amazon Nubia is being shown but she is not. If you can overlook these mistakes, and the fact that the on-screen versions of the heroine are overlooked, this is the perfect book for all things 'wonder'.

4-0 out of 5 stars Another Great Comic Guide From D & K
I am a huge fan of D&K's series of comicbook related "Ultimate Guides". While these guides are said to be geared towards younger/teen audiences, the wealth of information, detailed summaries, timelines and collection of illustrations will please even the most diehard of older comicbook fans.

Such is the case with this newest installment focusing on
everyone's favorite "Amazing Amazon". As with previous installments of the "Ultimate Guide",the focus is primarily on
Wonder Woman's comic career today, which may alienate those older fans wanting more information on the Golden and Silver Age
versions of the character. There is much detail given on Wonder Woman as written by George Perez as well as Phil Jimenez's recent work.

All the major characters from Steve Trevor to Artemis, from Giganta to the new Wonder Girl are covered. The only thing that would have made the book even better would have been the
inclusion of details related to the TV series and the one-shot TV movie but that is probably meant for another seperate book. Kudos to Scott Beatyy and D&K for a great series of books that clearly outclasses Marvel's inferior "new" Marvel Universe series of books. ... Read more

Book Description

An informative resource for formal studies of the Prydain Chronicles, as well as an excellent opportunity to delve into the fantastic workings of Prydain"The Prydain Companion is more than a quick reference or handy glossary, though it is all of that as well. Instructive, certainly. But, like any good companion, a pleasure to be with over a long period of time."--Lloyd Alexander, from the ForewordThis intriguing volume is at once a wonderful reference resource and a vehicle for exploration and discovery in itself. Complete with a biographical sketch of Lloyd Alexander, a personal Foreword by Mr. Alexander himself, a “How to Use the Companion” section from the author, pronunciation keys, and excerpts throughout, and—most substantially—an alphabetical guide to the peoples, places, and objects of the Prydain Chronicles, The Prydain Companion is a one-stop reference book for a beloved world of fantasy and magic. So for those who love the works of Lloyd Alexander—young readers, teachers, researchers, all—and those who are only beginning to know them, here is a worthy and useful travelmate. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Invaluable to Alexander's fans
The Prydain Chronicles have become a fantasy classic, a collection of five novels and one short story collection that are considered by many to be up there just below J.R.R. Tolkien's works (which the Chronicles resemble, in their depth and use of mythology). Now Michael Tunnell's guide to the Prydain Chronicles has been rereleased, and it's definitely worth getting.

It's in the form of an encyclopedia, with careful, detailed and well-cited entries for everything in Prydain. A lot of the entries include quotations from the books. What's more, Tunnell has done extensive research into the Mabinogion and other Celtic tales. As a result, the entries for characters like Math son of Mathonwy, Gwydion, Achren, the three witches of Morva, and many others include details about the mythological characters, adventures and legends that helped inspire the Chronicles. No character, however minor is denied attention to their mythical backgrounds.

Aside from the content, this edition of the "Companion" is great. Henry Holt has rereleased the entire Chronicles series, and the "Companion" doesn't disappoint; it matches all the other hardcovers. The binding is good, the paper is nice, and the cover is glossy. While I wasn't too crazy about the colors in the cover illustration, the illustration is very well-done. Alexander has also provided a foreword in hich he praises Tunnell's work.

This book (more than just an encyclopedia) is an invaluable tool for fans of the Prydain Chronicles and/or Welsh mythology. Fans of the book series should run to pick this up, and if you haven't read the novels, then do so and THEN pick this book up.

4-0 out of 5 stars Wonderful!
If you love the Prydain Chronicles, as I do, this companion is a must have. It's an excellent resource if you want to find out about a character in the Chronicles without going back and re-reading. It's very easy-to-use, and well done, one volume I definitely recommend adding to your personal library when you have the chance. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Finally A Book Advising Teens On How To Get Published
Ever wanted to get published? Well this is definitly the book for you. I have been writing stories for a while now and I have never gotten anything out of it besides my parents and friend praising me for my work. I read books for adults on how to get published I even got to the point where I was ready to send one of my books/stories to a publisher with barely any insight on what I was doing. Then my life, writing wise, changed.

I went to a local book shop with my mom for some apparent reason and she went to get her book and I went to get mine; however, I had no I idea of what I wanted to get so I searched for stupid things and then I typed out these exact words "how to get published" and you probably already know what I got. The Young Writer's Guide to Getting Published. I was amazed, a book for teens on getting published? So I went and found the book and my life has never been the same since. I got info on every thing, the cover letter, publishing (looking professional), and well just everything you needed to know. And the best part was in the back of the book there was a list with descrptions of publishers that accept young writers works. So stop reading this review and GET THIS BOOK!!!!!!

4-0 out of 5 stars Handy, Useful Guide
This guide is useful to a certain extent. It does go a bit far by saying remember to put your name on the manuscript. Only joking, its brilliant!!!!!

5-0 out of 5 stars A "nuts and bolts" explanation of the publishing process
Kathy Henderson's The Young Writer's Guide To Getting Published is an ideal and highly recommended introduction to the process of how to get a manuscript professionally published. Using Stephen King as an illustrative example, Henderson provides a "nuts and bolts" explanation of the publishing process and provides updated market and contest listings; profiles of professional editors and young writers; offers thorough directions for formatting plays and scripts; answers the most commonly asked questions; details information about local and regional places to submit manuscripts; gives invaluable advice about markets (including contests to avoid); offers a wealth of helpful hinds for developing marketing ability; and offers practical author-based tips, advice, warnings, and resource alerts. Book Description

First published in 1990, The Survival Guide for Kids with LD has helped countless young people with LD—and the adults who care about them. Meanwhile, laws have changed and technology has advanced. This revised and updated edition retains the best of the original edition: the warmth, affirmation, and solid information kids need to know they’re smart and can learn, they just learn differently. It answers the many questions they have, like "Why is it hard for kids with LD to learn?" and "What happens when you grow up?" It explains what LD means (and doesn’t mean); describes the different kinds of LD; talks about what happens in LD programs; helps kids deal with sad, hurt, and angry feelings; suggests ways to get along better in school and at home; and inspires them to set goals and plan for the future. Includes resources for parents and teachers. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars For parents, teachers, tutors, day-care staff and more
Now in a revised and updated edition, The Survival Guide For Kids With LD* (*Learning Differences) by University of Nevada-Reno professors Gary Fisher and Rhoda Cummings, is a simply presented and easily accessible guide written especially for those dealing with children who have "learning differences". Emphasizing that having one of the many kinds of learning disabilities or cognitive restrictions doesn't preclude a child from learning, from having friends, or from growing up to be a successful adult. The readable prose is packed with tips for dealing with teasing, providing encouragement, simple black-and-white artwork, study tips, and more. The Survival Guide For Kids With LD* is highly recommended reading for parents, teachers, tutors, day-care staff members, -- and most especially, for kids ages 10 and up. Also highly recommended for teen readers is The Survival Guide For Teenagers With LD (0915793512; [$$$]); for parents, When Your Child Has LD (0915793873; [$$$]); and for educators, The School Survival Guide For Kids With LD (0915793326; [$$$]).

5-0 out of 5 stars The Survival Guide for Kids with LD
This book is a GREAT way for kids to learn about their own Learning Disabilities (the book calls them Learning Differences). I read this book to my son to help explain to him why he's noticing that he's different from some of the other kids in school. The book creates such a relaxed, non-threatening attitude about LDs, and asks some really great questions to help the kids see which LD(s) fit them. It addresses ADHD as well! It has picture drawings of kids having trouble in school that my son could really relate to! He was at once interested, urging me to read more and more, even though he was learning that he was in fact "different". What a wonderful tool for families and kids to learn about each other and themselves. It's a positive book about the harsh reality of LDs - and it's written specifically for kids! Do your child a favor - read this book with them! It will open up conversations and give you both the language and courage you'll need to tackle the days and years ahead! ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars I SING THE BODY ELECTRIC
I'm constantly amazed by the consistently excellent educational book front-list from British publisher Dorling Kindersley. No other mass-market publisher comes close to producing non-fiction books of such quality, scope, sophistication, visual excitement and sheer readability. When DK Publishing tackles a subject, it's done right, typically by a hand-picked team of editorial professionals and topic experts, as is the case with their latest desk reference book, "DK Encyclopedia of the Human Body." Here a team of medical experts provided the massive data contained in the tome's 300-plus pages. Then a team of authors and editors groomed the text into DK's characteristic style by outlining subject heads and breaking down information into easily-digested sub-sections, each with a corresponding image. There are more than 900 full-color photographs, illustrations, charts and diagrams here, all mesmerizingly revealing the workings of the human body in painstaking detail. Instead of listing subjects alphabetically in the standard style of most encyclopedias, here it is organized into related subject groupings, working parts, moving framework, control and sensation, supply and maintenance, and so on, and designed in concert with DK's uniquely eye-popping visuals. Timelines, charts and illustrated histories help put subjects into perspective and tidbits on leeches, motion sickness, head lice, and toilets will get the attention of even the most reluctant readers. Page after page, the detailed subject is presented clearly and concisely in such a riveting way that young students ages eight and up will not only find and comprehend the information they're seeking, but will become so absorbed that they'll surprisingly discover themselves reading for the sheer fun of it. For high school students, the encyclopedia is a particularly distinct and pleasurable alternative to dull textbooks, making this a must-have for every student's complete home library. ... Read more

This book is wonderful, It is a must read, Freidl Bicker-Brandeis is a heroine, and her story is amazing. One look at this book and you will be glad you bought it. Rubin did a great job choosing pictures for this book, and bringing a hard issue of WWII concentration camps to a child level. Very good at illustrating the importance of Art Therapy.

5-0 out of 5 stars beautiful-visually & spiritually
Friedl Dicker-Brandeis was an artist of the Bauhaus who was also a Jew, sent to the Theresienstadt concentration camp and eventually executed at Auschwitz. The story, set against this bleak and oppressive history, is one of love and hope: she teaches children art and helps with "art therapy" in the camp. The importance of her choice in relentlessly pursuing a beautiful and healing expression of the spirit is revealed by the testament of a few who survived. There are numerous examples of the children's art, some of Dicker-Brandeis' art, and photographs that bring the story to life. Interesting, informative, and moving. This is a book to read to children (ages six to nine) or to allow older children to read on their own, and of course it raises questions that will explore the very meaning of humanity. ... Book Description

Look inside this well-loved toolbox—there is so much to discover! It holds strong wrenches that turn, pliers that pinch, and sandpaper that smoothes. There are nails, screws, and a hammer. A toolbox is a treasure trove for curious young builders.

When they’re not running to explore their own tool collections, children will be glued to this book, exploring the shapes, names, and useful jobs of common hand tools. Anne and Harlow Rockwell’s preschool classic still shines with a well-crafted simplicity that speaks to the desire young children feel to make something uniquely their own.

5-0 out of 5 stars Guiding our daughters
It's magical to witness, over the course of a few years, girls blooming into young women. The spell is broken, however, when we also see sexism consume their self-esteem. Where once they were spunky and imaginative, they become self-conscious and afraid how their ideas will be seen by others. Where once they voiced their opinions, we see them swallowing ideas unvoiced--especially in front of boys. And where once they excelled in math or science, we see them play "dumb" or believe they aren't as smart as "the other gender."

The Girls' Guide to Life reclaims the strength and self-assurance for young women. With a fun, appealing style, The Guide addresses gender issues by providing exercises and activities so girls learn who they are and what their strengths are.... If you have a daughter, or care about a girl you know, share The Girls' Guide to Life with them. You may learn a lot you never knew. You also may be reminded of things you learned the hard way and never thought to share with her. Encourage sons to read it, too, so they'll learn it's all right for women to be strong, to be leaders.

5-0 out of 5 stars Every female teen and pre-teen should own a copy!
Catherine Dee's The Girls' Guide to Life: How to Take Charge of the Issues That Affect You tackles the many challenges that face young women and girls today. Let's face it, low self-esteem, lack of political representation and gender inequity in the classroom are a drag. The Girls' Guide is a positive and necessary blueprint for battling the gender bias blues. Young women and girls lend their own voices and experiences of enlightenment and encouragement on topics ranging from math clubs to rock climbing to political activism. The Girls' Guide is an excellent combination of true stories, self-help and resources that will spark any young woman or girl to "take charge of the issues that affect" her. But don't just take my word for it. I gave the book to my eleven year-old niece. "I love it!" she said, "It's fun to read and has lots of ideas for me and my friends to do to help make us active and strong, and love ourselves.&quot

4-0 out of 5 stars Looking forward to the next edition
I got The Girl's Guide to Life on the recommendation of a Girl Scout professional at Girl Scouts of the USA. It's well-written and easy to use. The information is as appropriate for women as it is for girls. (It's also appropriate for men and boys!).

5-0 out of 5 stars Such a great book for girls
In an interesting and friendly style, the author writes that typical feminine characteristics such as silence in the classroom, insecurity about appearance, and intimidation about sports or science are not the irrevocable fate of being female but simply the result of growing up in a society that maintains a deep-seated bias against girls and women. She uses teen-magazine-style chapters to illuminate these biases: what they are, how to recognize them, and how to change them. Each chapter explores the facts of a particular issue, such as sexism in the media, then personalizes that issue through boxed, multi-cultural, first-person narratives and poetry , comic strips, anecdotes, and quizzes. She provides extensive lists of related books, videos, pamphlets, and organizations that will help give girls their bearings. But one of the book's highlights is it's activist feature, "Things to Do," that shows how to respond with sample letters, organizations to join, and other ways to kick the passive stereotype good-bye.

5-0 out of 5 stars Best book of the Century (no kidding!)
This book is a great work, probably the best of the Century. OK, I'm a guy. But I do have four nieces that are growing up quite well. Better now because of this book. I wish I had a book like this for guys when I was their age. It well explains the complexities in life we adults usually learn the hard way. A more level coverage of such a complex topic I don't think is possible. What politics is, the prejudice girls are subjected to, and many other complex subjects clearly covered. I will always remember the passage about what we think when girls act up in class, that we consider them "bad" girls. But what happens when boys do it? "Boys will be boys," we say. My sister always "acted up" in class and now is a PhD and former NASA Project Scientist, and she still acts up, go figure. My other sister did straight A's in math until someone told her that "boys don't like smart girls," and she went straight to C's. I gave her daughter this book and have seen no sign of that problem arising. ... Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars Plain, plain, plain: When will this book ever end?
I love Eyewitness books, but I thought this book was boring. This book has some obeious facts about butterfly life cycles, some butter fly facts, and some moth facts. But when you read the book it seems like the book will never end because the book is so repetitive. ... Read more
