4-0 out of 5 stars Nice book... Needs corrected, however
As stated by the previous reviewer, this book does have quite a few errors in the description of the equipment pictured. Yes, definitely a disk and a plow are two different things but I think that the author may have used plow in an attempt to describe what a disk does (sorta but not really). Although not accurate, the book is very interesting but definitely needs to be republished with the corrections. City folks need to know the proper names for all the farm equipment listed. It's very interesting and you just never know when you'll need to know stuff like that. Otherwise, it's a great book and very interesting to read - my son loves it but I also made the corrections! As a published writer myself, I find it very disappointing that the publisher was in too much of a hurry to sufficiently and properly edit the book. Might need a new editing staff there!

1-0 out of 5 stars This Book Is Not Accurate
My three year old son received this book as a gift with mere excitement, only to be devastated. While the pictures are bold and bright the context (name of the pictures) are completely false! Even my three year old knows that a disk (farm equipment picture) is not a Plow. Come on Roger Priddy do you and your high priced publishing firm not do any research before writing your books? It is obvious that this author, Roger Priddy, is more concerned with making money while teaching children wrong information. This picture book contains 40 photographs with name depiction and of the 40 pictures 11 are named incorrectly! There is better children's literature out there, this guy is a joke!

4-0 out of 5 stars Super Size Mctruck Meal
If you have a child who is interested in trucks, this is a good bet. It's a big sturdy board book, great for little hands. It's loaded with photographs of real trucks- farm trucks, fire trucks, big rigs, construction vehicles, many of which we see on a daily basis around town.
My son will soon be two, and he has enjoyed this book practically since he was born. It's one of those books that grows with your child. When he was smaller we would just point to the trucks, identify them, and talk about what they did. When he got older, we would say the name of a truck and he would point to it. Now he's pointing and telling us what each truck is...you get the idea. It's also a great way to learn colors, (Show me the red truck!) and parts of cars. (Where are the headlights?)
Two years ago, I couldn't tell a backhoe from a forklift. Now I'm a pro, and so is my son, thanks in part to this book. Although I do have to say, a couple of the construction vehicles are mislabeled, a minor annoyance. They also have an animal book in this series, which is cute. The Big Train Book, however, is a big yawn.

4-0 out of 5 stars Pretty good book for kids interested in trucks
My 18 month old son LOVES trucks and anything with a diesel engine. When we're driving or out somewhere he is always excited to see them pass by.

Our friend had this book for her son and as soon as my son saw it he had to have it, too. Now he will lie down on the floor and study each picture very closely. He will spend hours looking at this book. After he started to "read" this book (with a little help from me and his dad) he now calls the different vehicles by their proper names. Everything used to be a truck - now it's a BUS! or a FIRE TRUCK! or MAIL TRUCK!(imagine him yelling in excitement).

It is a hard page, large book (about 10" x 10"). It has real photographs with bright colors in the background. Each page is dedicated to a different category of truck such as construction or emergency. Each photo is titled and each page has a question like "Which truck takes away your trash." My husband is mildly annoyed with some of the descriptions because they call a backhoe a digger and a mini excavator a mini digger. This is the reason I have given this book 4 stars instead of 5.

I would highly recommend this book to any young child who is interested in trucks. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Great photos; interesting text
My 2-1/2 year old son loves to "read" this book, and I enjoy reading it to him.

The text is definitely written to an older child (I would say that a child would have to be in at least second grade before reading it on his or her own). Fortunately, there are enough snippets of information that an adult can tailor the words to fit the child as she or he reads aloud.

The photos, though, are what make this book so attractive. Each type of aircraft (to include experimental aircraft, Chinook helicopters, and future space-shuttle-like craft)has a two-page spread of photos in this oversized book. Most types feature at least three photos: one from the side, one from directly in front (the SR-71 Blackbird and the jumbo jet are particularly striking!) and one from the rear. Every type of aircraft has a photo taken while flying.

My young son is learning that jet planes don't have propellers and that rocket engines look different from jet engines. Of course, at first, he was more interested in the striking colors of the aircraft chosen for the photos, but this book allows him to grow. He has a while yet before he learns "it all", unlike some of the other airplane books for young children.

    An enthusiastic thumbs up!

5-0 out of 5 stars Big Book of Airplanes
This book is designed for children, but will appeal to anyone with an interest in aviation. The photos are clean and show the planes, helicopters and spacecraft well. The information provided for each aircraft is easy for children to read and understand. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Boring but useful
I must admit, this book is pretty lame in its organization and all. But there was still a load of stuff that I wouldn't have known, so there is some useful content here. (Heh...I couldn't have passed my test without it...)

5-0 out of 5 stars Great for drivers awareness
I have read some of the reviews and it appears to me that the ones who don't like this book are the children who had to read it. First of all this book is not written for each state, so you will have to check on your own state or county laws along with this book. As for this book not helping you pass the "TEST". Responsible drivers know that their is much much more to driving then passing the "TEST", which this book goes into great detail letting its readers know. I've been A police officer for almost 9 years and now work at a school and deal with children all the time and a lot of thing seem boring to them. But we as adults must continue the teach, and hope that some of what they read sinks in. When dealing with driving a vehicle, learning by experience a lot of times ends up to late. This book doesn't teach you how to pass the "TEST" it teaches you how to be a better driver, something we all need to be...

1-0 out of 5 stars Not worth your time!
As of now I am completing drivers Ed. We take tests over this book, and I feel it is rather outdated for what it is being used for. The pictures are helpful, but the text I found boring and most of the text seemed just to be fill. They streched out simple procedures, and filled the usefull information with unimportant details. If you want to pass the test, read your state drivers manual. If you think this will help you, try it, but I warn you, its not worth it. Your state drivers manual is worth you time, check it out!

5-0 out of 5 stars Right On Drive Right
This driver's ed curriculum is outstanding! My son knows things I don't. I would fail the final test if I had to take it. It is thorough and keeps the reader's interest with colorful illustrations. My son passed the DMV test with flying colors.

4-0 out of 5 stars Excellent Text
This text is one of two TX state approved books. Having taught my teen son from this text, I have to say that it was direct and very well written. Facts and situations were well presented. ... Read more

I purchased this book for our 2 year old, thinking he would enjoy it in a year or so. To my surprise, he loves it now! Be prepared to read this book numerous times at each sitting, and to make enthusiastic machine sounds!

5-0 out of 5 stars Our 2 1/2 year old son has studied it for over a year now.
We had to purchase another copy because our 2 1/2 year old son has read and played with the first copy so much he has destroyed it. Yet it is still his favorite. It is a great book for little boys. The pictures are terrific. He now knows his construction equipment when we are out and about.

5-0 out of 5 stars Bright, clean photos w/ wrap around text, great concept!
This is my son's all time favorite book, it goes everywhere with us! I do not need to see the text as I read, since I now know it by heart. 5-0 out of 5 stars Re-readable
I've a 2.5 year old son who is fascinated by machines and wheels.

I am not, and find most of his favourite books on these subjects rather tiresome.

However, this book is fun: its catchy rhyme and rhythm, and its quirky but somehow interesting and realistic pictures entertain me as well as him. He revels in the masculine, repetitive onomatopoeias which are fun to read out loud.

5-0 out of 5 stars My 3 Years Old Loves & Even Memorizes this Book!
Our 3 years old son received it as a gift. It is one of his favorite books. He read it every night twice for the first two months he got the book. My husband and I enjoy reading it as well (which is a plus). The colors are bold and bright. Each page is dedicated to one type of vehicle. Each vehicle has its own rhyme and all the rhymes follow similar structures. It is easy for the kids to read them back to you after listening. Our 3 years old loves to hear himself reciting lines from this book. I will strongly recommend this for any 3-4 years old who is particular into trucks and cars.

5-0 out of 5 stars Oh, how my son LOVES this book!
My boy was only slightly interested in machinery until we got this book. Now he's pointing out Garbage Trucks, Fire Engines, Diggers, and Road Rollers everywhere we go, and giving the corresponding cheer "gobble, gobble; race, race, racing; dig, dig, digging; roll, roll, rolling."

This book has a musical rhythm that makes it fun to read, and the illustrations are gorgeous.

5-0 out of 5 stars A winner with any machine-obsessed toddler
My two year old son adores this book and it's a lot of fun reading it aloud to him. Each page describes a piece of equipment - eg diggers, helicopters, rubbish trucks, cranes, bulldozers - and how hard they are working ALL DAY LONG. The language is really descriptive and captures the noises that the machines make. The words on each page have been laid out to reinforce the job that the machines do too. The illustrations are bright and appealing. This book is a definite winner with any child who likes noisy machines (and what toddler doesn't?!). ... Read more

I picked this book out from the huge selection of children's books at the National Air & Space Museum. It has some informative text and lots of attractive pictures. One especially nice thing is that it doesn't just show what spaceships look like but how they work. For example, it shows (better than some other books I've seen) the steps in a shuttle launch or a trip to the moon (it helped me explain to the kids where the lunar module is in the Saturn V, and how the astronauts got into it), and even an astronaut putting on her space suit. For the 4-7 crowd, it's great. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars MONSTER HIT with 4yr old boy
DK publishes great books - we have many of the hardboards as well as ones similar to this. If you have the 'Trains' or "Things That Go" ones, you may find this a tad redundant (dump truck and trains are again featured in "Monster").

I was especially impressed with the inclusion of the Jumbo Jet (photo of piggy-backed Space Shuttle was cool) and the Ice Breaker Ship.

I find the fold-out pages to be more an asset than hindrance. True, extra care is required to avoid bending them, but the extended page size they afford more than makes up for the inconvenience.

I'm not familiar enough with the series to know for sure, but these stories sound a lot like summaries of BTB episodes to me. The writing is bland, and feels like one must trudge to the end of each story. I guess this book is innocuous enough, but lacks the imaginative language that would make a child want to read it for himself/herself. Can we endure it? Yes, we can. But, hey! 5-0 out of 5 stars Must have for little boys
I have a three year old boy. We have owned this book since he was 18 months when we found it in a consignment store. Every page is taped down the center to help it get through the excitement he feels when looking at the working trucks. It has a fantastic collection of working trucks, i.e. excavators, dump trucks, road equipment; as well as every other kind of vehicle. His friends are thrilled each time they look through it and I fear for the books pages and am beginning to think we may need a second copy. If you have a little one who likes trains, planes, boats, trucks or cars he will love this book.

5-0 out of 5 stars A preschool classroom standout
In my preschool classroom of 4 year olds this book is the VERY favorite of all the boys. In fact, after about 6 months it is falling apart through considerable use and I need to order another. They huddle around it on the floor and pour over the pictures talking excitedly and naming all the cars, planes etc. A few children have shown it to their moms and asked to have one at home. You won't miss if you get this one!

5-0 out of 5 stars A must for children who like wheels
This book was and continues to be a favorite of my two sons (ages 2 and 5). Each page includes several clear, colorful photographs of all types of vehicles on land, sea and air. Short descriptions of their use or how they move are included. Not recommended as a bedtime story though, since it can be quite stimulating.

5-0 out of 5 stars Brief text, bright pictures of both comon & extreme machines
A nice book for younger children (maybee 2-5 years) with big bright pictures of common and "extreme" machines including boats, cars, construction, emergency, planes, trains and more.

The text for each picture is concise and to the point - keeps things fast paced. ... Read more

The brightly colored photographs and simple rhymes of the I Spy books have a perennial appeal, as does the straightforward task they put before the child: see objects clearly on the left-hand page and pick them out from the complicated jumble on the right-hand page. The degree of difficulty varies widely from book to book, and this example from the board-book series is one of the very simplest, using for its images small areas of detail from the more complex photographs in books like I Spy Gold Challenger. Here, a 3-year-old is likely to go through the book in minutes, seeing all the answers very quickly. Some of the later pages up the ante slightly, for example when a cat, shown in full on the left, is almost completely hidden on the right. This simple interactive board-book is a good choice for the I Spy beginner. (Baby to 3 years) --Richard Farr ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Good for very young toddlers
This is a "I spy" book for beginners. My 2 1/2 old was mesmerized by it the first time he saw it and immediately asked me to "read it again". However, he found all but one of the objects relatively quickly the first time around and now it won't take him more than one minute to go through the whole book. I encourage him to look for objects that are not featured on the left pages to make it more challanging.
