Book Description

In this engaging book, sportswriter Jeff Kisseloff gives readers the facts, along with tips, for analyzing, comparing, and deciding for themselves who might be baseball's greatest pitcher. Given the longevity of the game and the many candidates, it's not as easy as it seems. How to compare the stats of a righthanded pitcher throwing a 19th-century baseball with those of a lefty from the next century with the latest training and state-of-the-sport equipment? A companion to Who Is Baseball's Greatest Hitter?, this book helps readers understand the variables: how lively the ball was in various eras, how far the mound was from home plate, and how many games were played in a season. The introduction offers a thumbnail sketch of the game's history, while the two- to five-page discussions of each pitching champ offer vivid profiles of the men, their achievements, and the elusive qualities that made them the winners they were. Arranging his subjects in alphabetical order, and including profiles and statistics for 38 great pitchers, Kisseloff makes the case for each pitcher and includes suggestions for further reading. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Great teaching resource
Red Hot Peppers is an excellent resource for Elementary Physical Education specialists who want to integrate reading into their gyms. I use it as a resource for rhymes to teach children a variety of rhymes for their use. Jump rope rhymes are a great way to integrate reading and poetry into the "physical" realm. For the kinesthetic student, many times the jumping rhythm will support the rhythm in reading class. Also, my third graders take it one step further and write their own jump rope rhymes (again poetry). Your classroom teachers appreciate the support and the kids love the challenge. ... Read more

Here.Play Like a Girl is a labor of love from two women who are devoted to women's sports.Together, they searched through thousands of photographs and read hundreds of books to find the perfect match of words and images to celebrate today's female athletes.Their book is an inspiring affirmation for every girl who plays a sport, and every one who would like to.

1-0 out of 5 stars A Pretty Weak Celebration
We wanted this book as a gift for a grand daughter who is fast becoming a far better than average competitive athlete herself. As a family we have celebrated her accomplishments and thought this work would underline and reinforce the importance of what she is doing.

Unfortunately the work is a simple 32 pages of bright-color glitz with little or no substance. A few action shots that focus too often on close-up bizarre angles and "artsy" out-of-focus shots rather than meaningful athletic activity or accomplishment are accompanied by 16 quotes that fall short of being the best available by outstanding female athletes.

Those women who are athletes will find it "ho hum" and those who have aspirations and seek encouragement or recognition will need to seek elsewhere than this publication.

Being a published author myself and an ex-daily newspaper sports writer it would be my guess that putting the book together took at most a half dozen hours of layout and photo selection work coupled with a day or so of some journalism intern's leg work to find some usable quotes.

It just doesn't have anything to offer the reader or athlete.

1-0 out of 5 stars Play like a Girl
My daughter didn't like it very much. It was a collection of photographs more than anything. And even the photographs weren't very striking. The book was missing poems or a story to go along with the pictures. It was disappointing. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Cheerleading for Fun
I gave this book a 3 stars. I gave this book a 3 stars because it is help for for young Cheerleader's. Think this book could help you be a better Cheerleader because there are different sections that help you for example they have a section that is for shaping up, making the squad, leg work and more. I also liked how you have me tips. one thing that I didn't like was that they didn't give a lot of moves that you can try. I thought this book could help cheerleader's get into shape and also lean some tips that are helpful for Cheerleading try outs.

5-0 out of 5 stars Easy to follow pictures and a good poomse manual
This book is a great reference guide to many of taekwondo's forms (white belt to 5th dan blackbelt). But you can't learn the forms from this a book without a certified taekwondo instructor. It is possible to learn the forms from this book if you have a mastery or at least can do all of taekwondo's blockes, hand strikes, arm & leg strikes, stances, and kicks from 10th gup to 1st dan. But you will only learn some of taekwondo's kicks, strikes, stances, and blocks. If you are a complete beginner to martial arts this book will only give you a brief understanding of taekwondo's moves and forms. You need an instuctor to correct you. This book will not turn you into a master it is only meant to be a good reference guide. I strongly reccomend this book to all taekwondo students especially color belts who will have a much easier time learning the basic techniques an all the forms. Black belts will have an easier time learning the black belt forms of taekwondo. Black belts wishing to become a referee or judge will learn some basic terminology and rules. Competitors wishing to compete in competition will learn some one step sparring techniques, rules, and terminology. I also reccomend this book to experienced hapkido practitioners who wish to learn forms from taekwondo and who have a mastery of many blocks, strikes, and kicks. This book has something for nearly everbody!

5-0 out of 5 stars For the serious taekwondo student, an excellent study tool.
Beginner to advanced students if your looking to excel in modern taekwondo, look no further this is the book to buy! All the forms (Taeqeuk, Palgwe & 1st-9th Degree) are in one place, with clear pictures and step by step instructions that are easy to use. Covers the philosophy & history of taekwondo as well as reviewing self-defense sparring, breaking and international tournament rules. Grand Master Soon Man Lee and Master Gaetane Ricke have done a outstanding job at creating a great training guide, hope to see more titles from them in the future.

3-0 out of 5 stars Very shallow refference
I'm practicing a TaeKwonDo for a 6 month, but have already found a few problems in the form descriptions:
1st form - last two moves are wrong
4th form - moves 11 and 13 are wrong
Like other just mentioned, the front kick by Gaetane Ricke is not correct (she's not kicking with ball of the foot) and there is no difference between middle and high sections.
Note, that this is a reference for someone who knows the forms already, so he/she wouldn't be mislead by the mistakes...

4-0 out of 5 stars Good Forms Reference
I've been doing martial arts for about 10 years, and found this book useful for learning Taekwondo specific forms. I use it as a reference when trying to remember or learn a new form. If you already know the basic punches, kicks, blocks, and stances, this book will be sufficient to teach you the basics of the Taekwondo forms. However, you will still need an instructor to help you refine the timing, breathing, and purpose behind the forms.

5-0 out of 5 stars Good for beginner student
My 7-year-old is a Taekwondo beginner, he usually gets confuse and forgets which way to turn or which leg to move next. I use this book to help him to practise at home. It helps and he is doing a lot better in class. ... Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars Where's Cheerleading???
I was just sitting down to write this review when I saw another review just like mine! I was also curious as to where the cheerleading section was. Cheerleading is SO a SPORT. Wheather people want to believe it or not. I am a cheerleader and I have cheered for about 6 years. I put in more work to cheerleading in those 6 years, then my older sister put into basketball, which she has been playing for 7 or 8 years. If this book considers BOWLING a sport, the made a huge mistake leaving out cheerleading!

5-0 out of 5 stars Good Book, Bad Opinions
I read this book yesterday and I really liked it! I only found one flaw. Under the part where it tells you the pros and cons of solo and team sports, I was dissapointed when cheerleading wasn't listed. I am a cheerleader and believe me, cheerleading IS a sport. We go ALL YEAR not just a season. Now, I am used to people overlooking the fact that cheerleaders are athleats but what really ticked me off was that they stated that pool (you know with the stick and the balls and the green table) was a solo sport. If cheerleading isn't a sport then POOL is DEFINATLY NOT A SPORT TOO!!!!

5-0 out of 5 stars You Can Throw Like A Girl
I found out about this book a year ago in one of my magazines. It was going to be about girl athletes and they were looking for some young authors. I had a winning essay and it is in the book. I got to have an early copy of the book and I am very proud to have added to it. It talks all about female athletes and their struggles, hard work, and triumphs. It also has great ideas to help you if you're a female athlete. This book includes interviews with some really cool woman sports stars as well. This is a really awesome book and girls of all ages, athletes or not, would enjoy it. ... Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars Oh, how far we've come!
Winning Ways is a history of women's athletics in the US. Reading it will make you realize how far we've come- from wearing corsets during exercise!- and yet how far we still have to go. I didn't agree with some of the author's arguments; for example, that radio disk jockeys should not have criticized a woman who was assaulted, beaten, and killed for jogging alone at night because "there was still an assumption that women should curb their athletic activity"- please! There is such a thing as common sense. However, the author did make some interesting points- for example, about women in athletics being judged for appearance, about women in aggressive sports being perceived as too "manly", etc. Winning Ways is also filled with interesting photographs and illustrations. I recommend this book to anyone interested in athletics or women's studies. ... Read more
