Book Description

In 1957, Ted Geisel, a.k.a Dr. Seuss, wrote a book call The Cat in the Hat. It was fun to read aloud, easy to read alone, and impossible to put down. It was the first Beginner Book. And that's exactly what it did. It began to change the way children learn how to read--to make learning to read a joy, not a task, to make reading for pleasure the best way to learn.

Please Try to Remember the First of Octember!
By DR. SEUSS writing as THEO. LESIEG
Illustrated in full color by ART CUMMINGS

Question: What do you get the kid who wants everything? Answer: Please Try to Remember the First of Octember!, the wonderfully exaggerated LeSeig Beginner Book that gently pokes fun at the green-eyed monster in all of us. Reissued with a new cover taken from the interior, this backlist classic is a parent's wish come true! ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Please try to Remember the First of Octember
Please try to remeber the First of Octember is one of my favorite Dr. Seuss books. The book teaches children how to be patioant with something. The book says that you will be around when the first of Octember comes around. So with that being said I think that your young ones will love this Dr. Suess book. I rated it a 5.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great for the imagination
This is my favorite Seuss book. As a child I knew there was no 1st of Octember, but I loved to imagine all the things I would ask for and get if that day really existed. =)

5-0 out of 5 stars This book will inspire kids to learn the months of the year
I have a working hypothesis that says the rationale behind a Dr. Seuss book being written by Theo. LeSieg rather than Dr. Seuss has to do with how real the world needs to be for the story being told. Dr. Seuss the artist only illustrates books written by Dr. Seuss the writer, while books by Theo. LeSieg are illustrated by somebody else; in the case of "Please Try to Remember the First of Octember!" that would be Art Cummings. While the story talks about such fanciful things as the new sport of Hock-Zocker, played on a Hock-Zocker court, or something as simply as a pair of green kangaroos, the young boy who desires such things looks like a normal kid. This needs to be the case because whereas it is highly unlikely in the real world that a cat in a hat might come through the door when your mother is out and try to tempt you into doing all sorts of things that would be fun but wrong, terribly wrong, every kid wishes for something extravagent.

Or, to put it another way, every kid wants something that they are never going to have and pester their beloved parents for a new skateboard TV or rockets to shoot or whatever. A parent can only say "No" so many hundreds of thousands of times before they are going to want to take a different approach, which is why I really think "Please Try to Remember the First of Octember!" is more for parents than for kids. That is because the point of this delightful little volume from the Beginner Books series (I Can Read It All By Myself) is that a kid can have everything they want, but they have to wait until the First of Octember.

The idea of the First of Octember, the day when all of your most outlandish wishes and dreams can come true, will certainly make Christmas seem like a third-rate holiday to young readers, who will be movitated to learn the months of the year so that they can find out exactly when the First of Octember comes each year. LeSeig's story does not offer many clues, beyond noting that May is too early and June is too soon. As always we have the simple words, catchy rhymes, and funny pictures that are the trademarks of the stories of Dr. Seuss (or LeSeig), and as young readers learn to read this on their own they will also catch on that their is something sort of funny about the impossible things for which they wish.

4-0 out of 5 stars The Perils of Excessive Materialism
Most everyone is familiar with the kid who has a Christmas list that is pages and pages long. This book is about a similar child.

In this book the narrative voice (the parents), through clever rhymes, instruct the boy that all these things may come to pass, but not until the first of Octember (in school we used to hear similar tales about November 31st).

Using this phrase is much like saying, "when pigs fly", "when the cows come home", "when a certain-hot-place freezes over" or any other impossible time.

The only reason I did not give this book more than four stars is that at the end the boy still has hopes that there really is a first of Octember (but then some children may thing pigs will fly).

Clear illustrations and clever rhymes may make this one a favorite.

5-0 out of 5 stars October+September
Please Try to Remember the First of Octember is an interesting book...it is about a kid who thinks he will get everything he wants on Octember the first, the things he wants could be beyond your imagination but i think it can relate to all the kids whos parents have said "you will get want u want on teh second tuesday of next week!" ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Classic story of inspiration
Having been read by children of all ages and even made into a movie, the story of the Grinch is a familiar and beloved tale. The timeless triumph of love and goodwill retains all of its charm in Latin, especially because the authors retain rhyme and meter, even throwing in new wordplay.

The pictures from the original Dr. Seuss book help the reader follow the storyline, and the glossary in the back has every word in the book. Especially in modern context, the Grinch in Latin appeals to us by giving hope when even a grinch can be won over by sincere faith. Thus, while this book is wonderful as a gift to those studying Latin or looking to study Latin, it is also perfectly suitable for those who simply want a good story.

5-0 out of 5 stars Latin alive and fun!
The glossary included in this book is awesome. You will not find a word in the story that is not included. The classic favorite has all of the illustrations we remember from childhood - while the Latin text allows you to practice, and keep building your vocabulary and reading skills. What a wonderful way to bring Latin to your children!

5-0 out of 5 stars First Pooh, and now the Grinch?
Imagine my surprise when this showed up one day from a friend of mine. He gave it to my wife and me because she was a religion major and I'm a theology student working through my latin. There is nothing quite as fun as trying to make sense of something you already know, and the Grinch is a story I've known for years! The flow and cadence are even preserved, making the translators into linguistic artists beyond compare! Just be sure to pick up Winnie Ille Pu as well, and read to your kids in a language that is, to quote Python, "not dead yet!"

5-0 out of 5 stars "The Grinch Who Stole Christmas"
When I first saw the book I knew it was what I was looking for. The idea of putting children's books into Latin is great because books in Latin are very few and far in between. I liked the book because it is colorful and easy to translate. Also the book makes a great gift for Latin students and teachers because it makes Latin a fun and interesting langauge.

5-0 out of 5 stars One of the most interesting and fun books to read.
"The Grinch Who Stole Christmas," in Latin is one of the greatest Latin books I have read. I am a student of Latin and it is hard to find interesting books to read and translate. The translation is not hard and with the glossary, it makes reading very easy. ... Read more

Book Description

It starts out harmlessly enough, with a rabbit feeling rather pleased with

himself and his talent for hearing. A neighboring bear overhears the rabbit's

boasting and takes offense. The challenge is on, and the bickering begins as

the bear proclaims that his ability to smell is quite superior to the rabbit's

hearing. It's up to a wise earthworm to point out the winner--neither! A great

Seuss classic to give as a gift, with a story and a moral for our times.

5-0 out of 5 stars My favorite Seuss
One of the most entertaining Seuss Stories I have ever read, makes me glad I have kids or I may have missed this Gem. Story was so good I bought a copy for the day care center.

5-0 out of 5 stars The Big Brag is NOT a Big Drag
The Big Brag is a delightful book for parents to read to their kids. When Seuss preaches and teaches to eaches of us, we smile all the while. And his warnings about self-blow-your-own- hornings message comes through loud and clear. If preachers could teach when they preach like Seuss on the loose, our churches would be packed every Saturday or Sunday. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Wonderfull stories by master story teller!
Aside from Marc Brown, the author of the Author series, there are not to many children's authors that teach the children something worthwhile. Six by Seuss: A Treasury of Dr. Seuss Classics by Seuss, Dr. Seuss is the exception. In this well designed ( nice font, nice pictures) book one gets Dr. Seuss most well known tales for the price of one; these being, And to think I saw it on Mulberry Street, The 500 Hats, Horton hatches the egg, Yertle the Turtle, How the Grinch stole Christmas and last but by any means not least, The lorax. These wonderful tales all tell children how to behave, i.e., in Horton hatches the egg, the mother bird neglects her egg and therefore it turns into an elephant (thanks to the love and care plus a bit of attention shown by Horton). So do you child a favor and buy these stories and if you find this edition, Six by Seuss : A Treasury of Dr. Seuss Classics by Seuss, Dr. Seuss, then get it; because you will not regret it. ... Just suppose," said Ted "Dr. Seuss" Geisel, "there was a little kid who didn't speak words but only weird sounds?" Thus Gerald McBoing Boing was born, brought to life by a studio called United Productions of America as an animated cartoon. This delightful, rhyming story went on to win an Academy Award in 1951, and was briefly made available as a book at the time of the movie's release. And now it's back in hardcover and, here, as an interactive board book that produces a delightful boing-ing sound when you press the button on the right-hand top corner of the book. When Gerald McCloy turns two, he doesn't start talking like most children--he says "Boing boing!" instead. His George Jetson-style father, turning gray, rushes to call Doctor Malone, who decrees there is no cure. In time, Gerald only increases in volume, shouting "Boom!" like a big keg of exploding powder. School is no help, either. He cuckoos and honks in the classroom, "And as little Gerald/ grew older, he found/ When a fellow goes BAM!/ no one wants him around."Outcast, forlorn, he runs away from home. But just as he is about to board a slow-moving freight, the owner of the BONG-BONG-BONG radio station accosts him by the tracks. "I need a smart fellow/ to make all the sounds,/ Who can bark like a dog/ and bay like the hounds!/ You're GONG is terrific,/ your toot is inspired!/ Quick come to BONG-BONG-BONG,/ McBoing Boing--you're hired!"This fun and funny picture book--soaked in muted Fiestaware colors--lilts and bounces and boings like a good read-aloud should. Children will discover that sometimes it's our quirks that end up making us special. (Ages 3 and older) --Karin Snelson ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Brilliant work from one of the world's best satirists
Call me crazy, but I love the Seuss-meister. His work is so often overlooked in the world of satire, and too often plunked into the children's book catagories. This book was not written for kids! How quaint; how rare! He's written for gram and even gramp-air! "Only Old Once" addresses adult fears of doctors in the unique Seuss way, without being distinctly childish. He mocks the testing methods and treatments that many of us don't even want to think about. Another Seuss gem in a similar vein, is "Daisey-Head Mayzie", who also endures the poking and prodding of modern medicine, all because she was different. If you haven't read Seuss since your youngest child entered middle school, shame on you; consider yourself properly rebuked, and go get a few Cat in the Hat logoed volumes. Then curl up with a plate of green eggs and ham and let yourself go!

5-0 out of 5 stars Seuss for Adults
Yes, this really is a book for adults. It has page after page of insights about the clinic "Beckoner," and the waiting room fish, and your gratitude that you're, " . . . not quite as deaf as a post." For most of us, it has been far too long (since childhood?) since anyone read to us just to read to us, rather than pass along information. So for something very special, if you are over 50 or so, read YOU'RE ONLY OLD ONCE to your Significant Other. You'll probably end up hugging each other while you chuckle.

5-0 out of 5 stars Absolutely Love This Book
Even though I'm only in my 30's, this book give insight into the plight of the older generation. Granted, I haven't been afflicted by any of their ailments yet, but I'm so glad Dr. Seuss was able to write about them in his usual style. This is one of his best!!

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Gift For Those Milestone Birthdays!
When I turned a "certain age," one of my friends gave me this book (and inside was a gift certificate to a book store), and I loved it! What a great way to "present" a gift certificate for a "milestone birthday!" I have to admit that I've copied the idea and I love how people enjoy it. And, who doesn't love Dr Seuss??

5-0 out of 5 stars Brilliant look at aging!
I originally bought this book for my husband's 40th, and then decided to get a second copy for my dad's 50th. We read the book at my dad's surprise birthday party and everyone thought it was hillarious. It is certainly a great way to celebrate a special birthday, especially if you know the person well and know that they can handle the "teasing" about growing another year older. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Beyond the Cat in the Hat
Long before he envisioned the Cat that would forever change children's literature, Theodore Geisel was penning essays and cartoons for the humor magazines of the roaring 20's. But even then, he was best known as Dr. Seuss.

Though these essays and articles aren't in his characteristic rhymes, they are still full of the wildly outrageous shenanigans we remember from his later works. Herein we learn "The Origin of Contract Bridge" (a game played by ancient Druids using croquet mallets), how to pull the old "Cow-out of Pocket" trick, as well as "Some New and Better Superstitions". Like most absurdist writings, it's hard to hit the mark every time and some of the good doctor's writings fall flat, but most are sure to induce giggles.

Writing is only half of Seuss' talents however. All of the prose is illustrated, and the book also includes a nice collection of his cartoons. Most are one panel affairs reminiscent of Gary Larson's "Far Side" cartoons, but where Larson reveled in simplicity, Seuss fills his visions with detailed (if googly-eyed) beasts and fancifully intricate architecture.

This is one of those "rainy day books". The kind you can pick up and thumb through when you need a quick case of the grins.

5-0 out of 5 stars inspired absurdity- early nonsense for a good laugh.
for anyone seeking the inane and absurd this book is a must. featuring essays, cartoons and captions, and illustrations all done in the purely irrational Seuss style, it none the less has a raw and unpolished feel; early work with excellent quality and different to the more known Seuss children's books. the content ranges from essays as "sex and the sea god- a frothy novelette" to educational charts on "making our daughters less irritating" and an extremely funny cartoon collection. if -and possibly only if- you are a fan of the nonsensical, Seuss' genius, as in this book, will have you chuckling for a long time yet.

4-0 out of 5 stars A unique collection of Theodore Geisel's early works. Great!
We think of Dr. Suess as only a children's author but his early works, as seen in this collection, show his brilliance in the socio-political arena as well. I especially like his story, "The Waiting Room at Dang-Dang:Or Where the D.T.'s Go While Waiting for Assignment" and the story from which the book takes its title. If you are a Dr. Suess fan, and you can find this book available, it is a must for your collection. ... Read more

How long can you stare at another kid from three inches away and not laugh? In "The No Laugh Race," 1 of 19 songs in "The Cat in the Hat Songbook," you get to find out--and the kid who laughs last is the winner. Each song has full piano score by Eugene Poddany, and many have simple guitar chords, too. Whether waltzy, marchish, andante doloroso, or "Ad lib rubato tempo to simulate sneeze," these songs are bound to get the whole family caterwauling--which, as the first song affirms, is "good for tongues, and necks and knees, of people, bees, and chimpanzees." Some of the lyrics are even a teensy bit educational, amid the usual madness: "I Can Figure Figures" includes such unusual sums as "One plus one minus one is none. None plus none minus none is none." It all adds up to a lot of musical fun. --Richard Farr ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars A trip down memory lane worth sharing with your kids
ME TOO! I'm 33, and that's EXACTLY how I learned pints, quarts, and gallons! And there is no better silly song for camp dinner than Super Supper March. Two Legs, Four Legs is a perfect thing to sing to baby while changing a diaper... and my kids always crack up when we sing the No-Laugh Race! And for the 6 year old who's just lost a tooth, try In My Bureau Drawer. I wish I could get my hands on the record, put out in '67 by RCA! (PLEASE SOMEBODY, persuade them to re-publish it! It would be a real hit!) This is a real gem! The songs have the most interesting harmonies, so appropriate to all the crazy words Seuss is famous for. I showed my copy to my son's music teacher, and she fell in love with it.

Yes, I still know all the words to "My Uncle Terwilliger Waltzes with Bears" even though I'm 34! For years brother remembered how many pints were in a quart, how many quarts were in a gallon, by singing "I'm So Sad I Could Cry a Pint." This was my favorite childhood book (and record) and I'm thrilled to see it's still in print. I highly recommend it for children...and someday I'd like to see an alternative rock tribute album to the amazing songs here! ... Read more

In this funky pop-up adaptation of theclassic Hop on Pop, kidsdo their best to perk up Pop after a bad day. The furry yellow Seuss-crittersknow "it's best not to HOP on POP," but "we like to hop. / We like to hop / ontop of Pop. / STOP!" Other, more human-looking children give their fathersgifts, such as "a set of Slim Jim Swim Fins" (pink, three-toed marvels), violinserenades, and for the man who has everything... "a Bright Dwight Bird-FlightNight-Sight Light." Clever paper engineering livens up this six-spread volume(not that anything by Dr. Seuss ever needed enlivening). Young readers will lovemaking the gleeful characters hop on pop over and over, and will laugh to seethe walrus (another less-than-welcome gift) licking one poor daddy's ear. It'shard to say who will enjoy this more: fathers or their well-meaning littleurchins. (Ages 3 to 7) --Emilie Coulter ... Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars A real disappointment for any Suess fan
This is a terrible rewrite of Hop On Pop, one of Dr. Suess' great books. They have taken some of his words, added their own, and mangled it all in an attempt to make a pop up book that sounds a bit like Hop On Pop. It doesn't work, and it doesn't seem like a lot of care was put into the rewrite.

This is neither a real Dr. Suess book, nor is it a great pop-up book. Better to look elsewhere.

3-0 out of 5 stars Hop on pop
This book Hop on Pop is kind of like one big poem. This book rhymes like a poem and makes it fun. I would recommend this book for ages three to seven. Because eight year olds would think it was a little childish. The book Hop on Pop teaches you to to have fun and how to use your imagination like a house on a mouse. This book was good. ... Definitely a candidate for the all-time silliest of Dr. Seuss's books, What Was I Scared Of? is the extremely unscary tale of... a pair of empty pants! Just try to keep from giggling when reading this story aloud--we dare you. For starters, practice with "And there I was! / Caught in the Snide! / And in that dreadful place, / those spooky, empty pants and I were standing face to face!" The small size and sturdy cover make this tiny tome just right for tucking away in a bag for traveling or an evening out. Perfect for an overnight camping trip, this book puts fears in their proper perspective, and will have everyone laughing out loud. --Jill Lightner ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Scary/Silly
This book was always one of my favorites because me and my grandpa would read it together all the time and in the beginning I would always be scared but then at the end I would be laughing so hard!

5-0 out of 5 stars The best Seuss book of all!
This is the best Seuss book of all because of they way it sneaks up on the reader (and listener). It was read to me many times 35+ years ago and I loved it then and I love it now after reading it for years to our children. I find it terrifically effective because it is creepy and scary when all you see is the pants with nobody in them, and then it turns out that everything can be scary until one knows what it is and looks at the situation from the other's point of view. The colors and classic illustrations set the spooky mood and then make one laugh and feel so silly!

4-0 out of 5 stars Too Cute!
My mother read this book to me a long time ago when I was a child. The rhymes are contagious and now I enjoy reading it to my 4 year old son. Classical Seuss fun. My only complaint is that this version of the book is only 5 inches in dimension - it would be nice if this book were larger to better enhance the drawings inside.

5-0 out of 5 stars One of Suess' best!
This is a very funny Suess book that every age will find amusing. It also teaches a good lesson: You may be afraid of something or someone because it's different, but it feels the same way about you because it sees you as different! One of my favorite Dr. Suess books!

5-0 out of 5 stars Those Empty Pants Were Just As Scared As I!
My 4-year-old son LOVES this book! We read it several times a day. He finds those empty pants to be quite hilarious! Thumbs up on this one--it is a big hit! ... Read more
