This adorable interactive book teaches body parts and more!
Every once in a while, I come across a book that appeals to the adult in me, because it's educational, artistic, amusing or perhaps all of the above, but what fascinates me is when my son discovers the real value in a work, and teaches me a thing or two along the way. To adults "Where is the Baby's Belly Button" written and illustrated by Karen Katz appears to be a simple 14-page book that teaches body parts, but to children it's much more.

This nifty little board book is essentially a peek-a-boo book with flaps. It measures approximately 8 ¼" x 7 ½" x ½ ", and is constructed of cardboard with heavy card stock for the flaps. The images are simply illustrated, yet brightly colored with creatively contrasted backgrounds that produce interest. The text appears on the left side of the book with bold, solid colored backdrops that emphasis the large black printing, and compliment the illustrations on the opposing page. The writing consists of short, four or five word sentences, such as, "Where are baby's eyes?" The reader lifts the flap and it says, "Under the hat." The picture shows a baby hiding under a hat, and when the flap is lifted the baby's face is revealed. She is pointing to her eyes.

"Where is the Baby's Belly Button" has been one of my son's most requested books for a year now; he's nearly two-years old. He lovingly refers to this book as the "baby" book, and he has taught me that he has learned where his eyes, mouth, belly button, feet, and hands are, in addition to understanding the meaning of the words, hat, cup, shirt, cat, bubbles and WHERE. The question, "Where?" comes out of his mouth probably 20 or 30 times everyday, and I am certain it's because of this book. I wish the flaps were made of a heavier card stock as they have become creased over time, which is expected with use, but also preventable with a heavier stock. This book has been a huge hit, and one I haven't gotten tired of reading over and over again. I recommend this book for one-year olds and up as the interactive feature, (lifting of the flaps) is too advanced for younger babies, however an infant would probably find the images fascinating all the same.

Great fun for baby and parents!
This is a nice sturdy book with colorful drawings of babies with some part of their body hidden. Each page asks, "Where is baby's ...?" Toddlers delight in lifting the flaps to find the hidden pictures. The pictures are bright and cute with eye-catching fabric and wallpaper patterns. A very attractive book, and perfect for that stage when toddlers become fascinated with their belly buttons! My 17 month old has really enjoyed this book. It can be very helpful in getting kids to name body parts, and it's fun for both the baby and the parents to read. Highly recommended.

Keep book out of baby's reach
My 16 mo old daughter has loved this book since she was 12 mo., but I have to keep it out of her reach . She loves to lift the flaps but has now been tearing the flaps off when she reads the book on her own. She is only allowed to read it in my lap where I can stop her from ripping the flap off.

Best book
This was one of the first books given to our son. We loved the cute pictures and wording of the book. Our son is now 15 months old and still loves to find the different things on the baby. He especially likes Where are baby's hands....under the bubbles...maybe it is the way I change my voice when reading to him. This is a must have...along with all the other books by Karen Katz

We love them too!
My almost 19 month old son has loved these books for months! We have quite a few of them and they are the first ones he picks! When his little friends come over, they also reach for Katz' books first. Very fun. My son LOVES to pick up the flaps. My only thing is to be careful with a young infant because they will rip the flaps off. Highly recommend though!

Great book!
It's a great book. My daughter loves to read it over and over again. She is only 15 months, but loves to look at the pictures and listen. The other books by the same author are good too.

We Love Them
My two boys really enjoy Karen Katz's books better than any of their other books! We own them all - and although "Where's Baby's Belly Button?" is simply adorable, and great for learning body parts, I think their favorite is "Where's Baby's Mommy?" When we read this to them, we always ask them, "where is the wagon?" . . . "where is the kitty?" . . . "where is the ball?" - We love it. We also count the ducks in the tub now that our oldest is 2.5 years old! "Daddy and Me" is wonderful because we change the dogs name to our dog - Lucy - and my husband doesn't feel left out because its about him and the boys!

My daughter started crawling because of this book!
My 7 month old daughter loves this book so much that the first time ever she started crawling was to come sit near me while I read it to her! She always laughs and giggles whenever I take this book out and she comes over to sit next to me. Other books, don't hold her attention and she wanders off after a few pages! I definitely recommend it!

One of Katz's best!
I have had this book since my daughter was almost a yr old and we still read it now at 25 mos...she never tires of the bright colors, the big flaps that are easy to lift....at the beginning just lifting the flaps was exciting for her but now she is understanding the concepts and gets all excited at the end when the boy finds his Mommy...then she turns to me and says Mommy! and hugs me! : ) The book also teaches concepts like in, behind, under etc. and also teaches vocabulary (duck, tub, chair, table etc..)....It is a book that can grow with your child. I think it is one of her best.

Another favorite by Karen Katz
I started reading this to my daughter when she was about 7 months. Listening her language and reasoning develop with each passing month is just incredible. She went from knowing when to say "no" and "yes" (after revealing Mommy's hiding spots) to knowing where Mommy is hiding, and naming all the things that Baby encounters along the way. I had to buy a second one because the first one was used and chewed and the flaps were all torn off. (You could say she ate it up.) She's now 21 months and still loving this story.

Great Book
I bought this book for my daughter when she was 4 months. She has loved this book from the beginning. She is now 9 months old and gets excited when it is time to read this book. We have to read it 3 or 4 times in a row and sometimes that is not enough. Absolutely her favorite book.

Easy to read, fun book!
This is one of two board books by Karen Zatz we bought for our 12 month old baby. The book is very easy to read with short questions like "You burped, what do you say"? When you open the flap there is a bright, fun picture & the words "Excuse Me" written inside. My child loves to be read to & responded well to this book at a young age.

Great for babies & toddlers!!
I originally purchased this book as a gift, thinking it was too "babyish" for my 2 1/2 yr. old. But he saw it and loved it! The words are so simple to read and understand that it has become a great learning tool as he begins to focus on the letters and sounds of words. Great pictures and great ideas. It's really helped him understand how, when and why to say things like "excuse me or thank you."

NOT ALL ABOUT BITING
I bought this book because I thought it was all about biting. The book title is misleading. It includes biting, hiting, kicking, spitting.... There's only one page about biting. I'm not even going to show this to my daughter because she doesn't have a brother (referenced on--don't spit on your brother) nor do we have a dog (referenced on--don't kick the dog). Don't want to confuse her.

Great learning tool
My 19-month old son can't get enough of this book. He loves it. He was a slow talker, but this book helped him to say new words. He took pride in the fact that he knew all the answers before we lifted the flaps! The book is simple and holds toddlers' attention well too. I'd highly recommend it.

An excellent book for toddlers!
We bought this book for my daughter when she started biting other kids at her daycare (around 17 months old). It was such a hit with her, I also bought a few more copies for the daycare. Besides biting, it also addresses all the other negative behaviors we don't want our children engaging in. My daughter loves to lift the flaps and yell out the answers. When she does slip with one of the behaviors, I gently say, "No hitting. What can you hit?" She knows the answer right away and knows to apologize. At 2 years old, the book is still a hit and one we continue to ready daily. Fidning fun interactive books that teach a good message can be hard. This one makes it very easy for the parent!

Be careful with this one
I got this to teach my son not to bite, and it works fine for him and that behavior. However, my daughter who is 3 1/2 and who has had no problems with biting or causing trouble read it to herself. The book covers biting, hitting, and pushing, which she has long heard were wrong because they can hurt people. The book also covers spitting. This is really weird. I don't think toddlers have problems with spitting unless someone teaches them to do it. They do a page on "Don't spit on your brother" -- I don't think my daughter would have ever thought about this on her own, but next thing I know that evening she spits on her brother. We had to have a discussion about even though spitting doesn't hurt people, it is still wrong.

I wouldn't recommend it, since it basically teaches children how to spit, and that they can spit at people -- even though they mention it is wrong, it puts the idea into the child's head. I think the author just needed one more page of bad behavior to finish the book and came up with spitting, which really doesn't fit as a bad toddler behavior.

My toddler loved it so much we had to buy a replacement book
My daughter is now a little over a year and a half and she's been so attached to this book for MONTHS. In fact, she loves this book so much that she's torn the lift up flap pages because she gets so eager to see what's next. There is so much scotch tape holding up her current book that my husband and I thought we should just get a replacement book as well as order other Karen Katz books. Thank you Dora
Our neighborhood bookstore has a very good children's section and my son has the habit of zeroing in on anything with Dora's picture. We, of course, had to buy this one and he has taken over reading it to our one year old daughter. The flaps have held up well and it's become the number one bedtime choice for many nights in a row. I've given up counting. A gentle story to end the day.

Fun, fun, fun!
My 3 year old loves all of Doras' books. My seven and eight year old love Drum, Chavi, Drum!/Toca, Chavi, Toca! and my fourteen year old nephew is obsessed with Lemony Snicket books. Our family loves fun books and you can't go wrong with any of the above.

My kids love it! 2 yr old girl and 3 year old boy.
The book is colorful. It keeps the children interested. It involves the children in the book by asking "do you know who's making that sound?". They adore this book, I only wish they wouldn't fight over the "flaps"!

Not very interesting
I bought this book for my 19 month old son because he is a great fan of Thomas, but it hasn't proved to be a hit with him or with me. There isn't much of a storyline, and it's barely worth lifting the (very small) flaps, as the pictures underneath are mostly uninteresting and tiny. The colours are also a bit strange (Bertie the bus is brown), and the text does not show the personality of Thomas or any of the other characters. In terms of lift-the-flap, books like "Where's Spot" or "Spot Goes to the Farm", with large flaps and clear, colourful pictures underneath are far superior.

Nice book, plenty of windows, a bit short
Just as others have said here - the book is fun for my 2 year old, has lots of flaps, is a bit flimsy, and a bit short. BUT, we knew how long it was from the description and he has loved looking at it over and over again. The windows match up just fine in our copy and perhaps there was a problem in one copy but it is not a consistent problem with this little book.

Thin on content and construction
I was dissappointed by this little book. My two year old loves Thomas, and we certainly support the tank engine and his creators financially, and picked up this little book with a recent order. My son enjoys reading it, but it is a little short, and I must add, is about the thinnest and flimsiest lift-and-peek book that I've ever purchased. The flaps are torn very easily, and don't "match up" very well with the pictures underneath. To be fair, there are many flaps, and my little one does enjoy the book, it just isn't made to last very long, unlike most of the same genre.

one of the best lift-the-flap books made
This is a terrific lift-the-flap book. What makes this book especially good is that when a flap is lifted, the artists maintain the integrity of the scene. For example, in the first two-page spread a mother and son are standing beside a pile of luggage. When you lift the flap to see what is inside the luggage, the top of the flap overlays where the mother and son were withthe same image so that you still see the mother and son as well as the newly exposed luggage contents. That is such a nice touch, and unique in all the lift-the-flaps I've seen (and I've seen puh-lenty!)

Six scenes depict Thomas or his friends at the station, picking up livestock and produce, in farm country, on a bridge, beside the beach, and at the circus. The pages are glossy so they can be cleaned easily, and the flaps are fairly sturdy, though they can be torn off.

A MUST HAVE
I purchased this book for my son who was not even 2 years old at the time and wow! This book was a huge success. It was a great way to introduce numbers, letters and opposites. My son could not get enough of it. He is nearly 3 years old now and still loves this book. It is a lot of fun to watch your child know what to expect from the pages and play along with the pictures. Although it is now extremely "used" and in need of replacement due to excessive use (my son may have loved it a little too much!), it is well worth the money of purchasing a new one. My daughter who is currently 6 months will now get her chance to experience Elmo the same way my son did.

Alphabet!
We gave this book to our 16 month old daughter for the holidays and she simply hasn't put it down since. She actually says "alphabet" when she wants to read it, opens to the pyramid of blocks, and proceeds to name the items under each of the letters' flaps. She really loves it. It's also helping her learn her shapes as well as the other Sesame Street characters names. The drawings are beautiful and it's really a lot of fun.

My Daughter Loves This Book!
I bought this book for my daughter as part of her birthday present when she turned 1. I did not think that she would love it as much as she does. She is now 17 months old and she still carries it around everywhere. Here favorite part is at the end when Elmo needs help finding his beloved teddy bear. When we find it together, she always gives the bear a big kiss and claps HOORAY!

Great for Travel
I bought this book to keep my 22 month old daughter busy on a 7 hour flight. She LOVED it! She was so excited to open all the little doors to see what was behind all of them. It kept her busy for at least an hour! It's a sleek book, although large, and fits right down the side of my diaper bag. The little doors tear pretty easily, but we taped them back. She loves carrying it around with her wherever we go. AND the price here is better than the discount store!

4 months and still going strong
I bought these for my daughter not knowing how much she would love them. Granted, she is only 11 months, but like the other reviews have said, the books are small enough to fit in her hands. She carries them EVERYWHERE! She even sleeps with a book or two. I love the colors, and the texture as well. With some board books, my daughter has gotten paper cuts, weird I thought. But not from these! They are awesome. I had just bought the ABC ones to start with but now I am getting the learning ones too.

The best first birthday present ever!
My daughter received this for her first birthday. At first she loved reading the little books - which are sized perfectly for a toddler's chubby little hands. After a couple of months she became obsessed with stacking things and would spend time every day stacking and re-stacking the books. They are shaped just right for a young toddler to stack, and are much less frustrating than square blocks.

At about 18 months she got into colors and numbers and loved to sort the books by color and count them. Now at 21 months she is STILL playing with this toy - long after every other first birthday gift went to the attic or the thrift store. And the books and the box are still in great shape - this has to be the sturdiest toy we've ever owned.

I now give this box of books to every one year old I know. I can't say enough wonderful things about this toy!

CAPTIVATING
I bought the Learning Block Books as a gift for my 13 month old niece. Although she was a bit tired (read cranky) at the time, it instantly captivated her. The box that holds the little books is very sturdy and has plenty of extra room to hold them (no struggling to fit them in). She immediately started to put the books in and pull them out. She then began to open them and look at the pictures. The books are color coded (and thick cardboard) so that the shapes and animals follow the same color theme. Since then she has continued to play with them daily and as she grows older the books give the opportunity to continue to learn.

A great companion to the classic ABC Block Book set
Our daughter received the author's set of ABC Block Books as a gift when she was 8 months old, and it has been a beloved staple ever since. These are incredibly versatile book/toys which are effortlessly educational. Stack them, put them in and out of their box, look at the pictures, learn the letters, sort them by color, and of course read them out loud! Hours and hours of fun.

As soon as I saw this new collection I knew we had to have it. My daughter (now 18 months) was so excited! A whole new set...it was like finding the dead sea scrolls. And the books do not disappoint. I particularly like the shape and numbers books. The shapes encourage kids to look at everyday objects in different ways (e.g. pillows and doors are rectangles), and the numbers all conclude with the nice touch of a birthday cake with that number of candles. Great book for special needs children with a tactile need!
My 6 year old son is developmentally disabled. He loves to look at bright pictures and feel different textures. This book is great for both. Although he is six we usually resort to tactile toys intended for infants. How refreshing to find a book that suits his needs and doesn't look babyish! The other books in this series are great as well. Zoo animals, Dogs, and Cats.

So much fun
My six month old daughter starts to giggle and shake when I pull this book out. She loves this book. I read it to her and let her feel all the animals. Everytime I turn the page she squeals with excitement. I love that it is a board book, too. She can hold it and gum it like babies do with EVERYTHING and it is not ruined. This is a real fun book to read to babies. There are never too young. This one is perfect because she can see the pictures and feel all the fur.

Great Reading for the Car

A must have book for your pretoddler
My son is just 10 months & he loves this book. He goes over to his books & always finds that one so he can touch the fluffy chick. He actually sits & lets me turn the pages in this book so he can touch all the animals. His favorites are the chick & the whooly lamb. I bought this book for my son a few months ago & he is fascinated by being able to touch the different animal textures. When we are reading other books that talk about chicks or lambs he will go over & look for this book! He apparently makes the connection!

Good choice for very young children.
I gave this book to my 1-year-old niece about 6 months ago, and she absolutely loves it! She still has to read it at least once a night. She gets such a kick out of lifting the flaps to see what's hiding underneath. I highly recommend this book.

Never too early to add this title
I've read this book to my daughter since she was four months old. She really likes looking at the pictures and flaps. Other books, even classics like "The Runaway Bunny," have too many words to interest her, but this one has a very short, succinct story and great pictures.

Something tells me it's all happening at the zoo
Tis the ultimate interactive story for the young 'uns. An unseen narrator (who we assume must be a child of some sort) narrates a tale of unprecedented zooish generosity. After asking the zoo for a pet, a series of animals are sent in the hope that the child will want them. Unfortunately (and as the book makes clear) many of animals one finds at the zoo are inappropriate pets. Each animal that arrives is hidden beneath a flap. When you lift the flap the children to whom you are reading this tale are supposed to delightedly cry out the name of that particular animal. In this way, you can teach kids the kinds of animals that live at the zoo. For the narrator, though, elephants are too big, lions too fierce, monkeys to naughty, and frogs too jumpy. In the end, the narrator receives a small hamper with the note, "From all your friends at the zoo" containing the perfect pet.

As an early book, this story and its accompanying illustrations are very very simple. I was a little disappointed at the flimsiness of the flaps children are supposed to lift or turn. The copy I paged through had been scotch taped and re-scotch taped several times to keep the book in any kind of semblance of order. It is also a pity that the animals in this book aren't named ever. I don't doubt that kids will, mostly, be able to name them anyway, but it's nice to learn to read the names along with the pictures of the animals. Still, the book is satisfying to read. Two years to 200 years - A Favorite
I have six little ones from 10 to 2. They have all enjoyed this book and now the older ones read it to the younger one's. I found my two year old reading it to herself from memory. What a treasure!

16 month old Ayla and Maisy books
My grand child, Ayla, also enjoys this lift the flaps book. She is still discovering flaps she hasn't noticed as yet. I will difinitely order more of the Maisy books as they are a hit with her.

Awesome book
I got this book for my 16 month old 1 week ago and she has hardly put it down since. It has bright captivating illustrations, robust flaps that are hard to tear, and a different theme on each page. The themes are ones from real life (counting bugs in the garden, colouring different objects, putting different shaped toys away in the playroom, and doing opposites in the playground) and the way the flaps teach the concepts is ingenious. My baby is particularly crazy about the opposites page since when you flip the flaps Maisy goes up and down the slide, Cyril swings high and and low on the swing and Charley dumps a bucket of sand into a truck, all activities she's crazy about herself. Flipping the flaps and seeing the results has her mesmerized. I can't say enough good things about this book!

Cute book. Really big. Lots of little flaps to open. Lots of fun things to talk about (if child is speech delayed and you are looking to teach vocabulary interactively)...Concepts up/down and wet/dry are shown very effectively with flaps...Lots of good chances to say "where is....?" and open flaps to find. If your 2-3 year old likes Maisy, this is a good book ...

Lots of Flaps and Learning!
This book has so many flaps! My daughter loves them! But, there are so many, and some are small, that it's almost too much for her at nine months. This is definitely a book she'll grow into, though.

The characters are cute and she likes to hunt for them under flaps. The book itself is colorful and oversized, making reading it a lot of fun for both of us. Plus, different pages explore counting and colors and other topics that will make it easy to give your child a little "lesson" while reading.

Get this for the little readers!
If you're looking for an excellent baby gift, or you want to spice up your baby's library, I highly recommend Peek-A-Moo! My three month daughter is absolutely delighted by this book. The book is nice and large, with big animal faces on each page. She focuses intently on the illustrations as each animal "plays" peek-a-boo with her. Of course, it allows for some creative reading on my part as well. It gives you a chance to do your best animal sound impersonations. A favorite in our library!

From the ten books I have read, my favorite book of all of them is Peek-a-Moo! by Marie Torres Cimarusti. I really liked this book because of the bright colors and the big illustrations. Peek-a-Moo! Has huge pictures with a really peek-a-moo motion. This book is great for all ages; It is also a great big activity book. All the pages have something to flip up and down. If I would have read it to my daughter I know she would of liked it too, just like me. This book helped me to be more animated and active with my kids by showing action and reading at the same time. Standard First Birthday Gift
My daughter has loved Peek-a-Moo and Peek-a-Zoo since she's been 8 months (or even younger--I can't remember when she didn't love these books!). She's 20 months old and still loves to look at the books, although now she reads them without me! The only downfall is that these books are paper and naturally they have been ripped up and scotch taped back together. I have given these two books to about 6 one year olds to delighted parents.

So Much Fun!
This book is the best! My 18 month old never fails to smile when we read it together. I am so happy that I bought this for him because he really enjoys it. I only wish that it was a little more sturdy.

Buying it AGAIN
We got this book as a gift from a friend whose son was on his third copy. Our son has loved it just as much, right up until the day he decided to rip the pages into little bits. The Very Lonely Firefly
My children (ages 2&4) adore this book. The text is a bit boring, but they look forward to the last page. They also have a tendency to leave it open, and the batteries have been replaced twice in the last 5 months -- (it takes 4 batteries that retail for $2-3 each, and I've only been able to find them at one electronics store). This seems to be too much maintenance for a children's book -- especially given that we enjoy Eric Carle's "no-maintenance" books just as much or more.

Great First Bedtime Book
I've been sharing this with my daughter since she was about 7 months old. She was a little antsy the first time through, but when we reached the lights she fell in love with the book. It is her favorite of the Eric Carle books (although she really likes sticking her fingers in the holes of The Very Hungry Caterpillar.) My daughter is now 20 months old and asks for this story every night. Her vocabulary is growing with each rereading and she is able to point out most objects (firefly, candle, lantern, dog, cat, flashlight, lights) to me. I am surprised at how much she enjoys it and find this is one book I don't mind reading every night.

The batteries are the only problem. The first set finally died after a year of steady use, and the second set didn't last very long. (I suspect she left the boook open all day.) I am having trouble finding replacements that don't cost more than the book, but the book is so enjoyable I don't mind.

The Very Lonely Firefly
My children love this book. The flashing lights for fireflies at the end is the icing on the cake! We have been out for the past 4 nights catching fireflies in a jar (and then letting them go) to watch them glow. My boys (ages 3 and 5) love all the Eric Carle books.

Buy it!
Okay, don't even hesitate on this book, just buy it! The fireflies light up at the end of the book and there just couldn't be any child anywhere that wouldn't be thrilled with this book. Mine just played and played with it and couldn't put it down. Still is one of his favorites and has to be read VERY frequently! This is such a cute, cute book and very well done. Plus, it has fireworks in it - another household favorite! It goes through and shows the many things that light up at night, explaining them very well. Just grab it and run - you won't be disappointed!

Blue moon, you see it standing alone
You hear about this sometimes. An artist becomes so famous and influential that they're eventually able to go back to some of their earlier works and (to their mind) improve them. Steven Spielberg did it with "E.T." Singer/songwriters are constantly reinventing their old classics. Eric Carle did it with "Papa, Please Get the Moon For Me". And though I usually object heartily to artistic preferences changing old classics that technically belong to the masses (ya hear that Speilberg???), in Carle's case I'm willing to make an exception. Changing a mildly interesting story into a complicated (but hearty) pseudo pop-up book, Carle has recreated his art the only way an artist should: he has made it better.

Following in the tradition of such children-asking-their-parents-for-the-moon classics as "Many Moons" (highly recommended!), in this simple story a girl asks her father to please get her that large circular piece of rock in the sky. The father complies, hauling out the longest ladder anyone has ever seen and taking it to the tallest mountain in the world. Initially depressed by the fact that the moon is (surprise!) too large to bring to his daughter, the father is eventually comforted by the moon itself. It tells the man that if he just waits for it to wax and wane, it'll become a manageable size in no time. This turns out to be the case and the little girl is delighted when the father hands her the sliver that is the moon to play with.

The book flap says that by reading this book, children will come to realize that, "even a seemingly unreachable goal can actually be attained". I dunno about that. If that's the moral of this story, then I want no part of it. No, the message I received from this tale is that a man will sometimes move heaven and earth to bring his children the things they want the most in the world. They might not always succeed, but if a man were able to get the moon for his daughter, he'd do so.

Carle's illustrations are classic Carle. I'm personally a little lukewarm on him. The pictures here are a little more swirly and paint based than his usual cut paper concoctions. The book flap mentions that for the reissue of this book Carle, "created new illustrations for his original story", so I do not know how much he has changed. If the pictures are lovely, however, they are merely a compliment to the book's real joys. Pages in this story fold out to reveal the enormity of the father's task. A single ladder, once the pages are unfolded, takes over a four page spread. And the moon itself, when at its full capacity, opens up to become larger than the book that holds it. The effect is stunning and enjoyable for those kids that love interactive pictures. Nicest of all is the durability of the paper used for these effects. I'm sure we've all seen the effects a three-year old can wreak on a pop-up book it loves. I took this book, published in 1986, from my local library and the pages STILL work just as well as the day they were made. If that's not sturdiness, I don't know what is.

Should you be scientifically inclined and you object to such notions as a moon being physically smaller when it is but a crescent, avoid this story. If, on the other hand, you enjoy a good fold out pop-up book enlivened by colorful cut-out illustrations as much as the next guy, then I highly recommend this delightful piece of lunar propaganda. It is certain to be beloved of millions of star gazing children worldwide.

another beautiful active book from Eric Carle
Author Eric Carle (The Very Lonely Firefly, The Very Hungry Caterpillar, The Very Busy Spider) excels in creating books that offer children more than words on a page -- he consistently incorporates additional elements (lights, holes(!), textures) that make the books even more interesting to thirsty little minds.

In this book, a smaller portable version of the original, a girl asks her father for the moon. Fold-out pages complement Carle's unique illustrative style as we discover a looooooong ladder that reaches to the moon and back, and a magnificent four-page center spread revealing the full moon in all its glory.

This fantastic tale for young children is sure to delight parents and kids.

What a great dad!
This book is the beautiful story of a dad who goes to all lengths for his daughter - he actually gets the moon for her!
In typical "Carle fashion" this book expands (as the moon appears to do), the pages ascend ever higher (as the moon ascends in the sky). As with Carle's other stories you don't just hear them and see them - you FEEL them. I love the motion in this book. The tenderness of the gift from father to daughter and the representaion of the child's joy in playing with the moon. This story has a wonderful opening, fantastic struggle and beautiful ending. I especially enjoy how the moon itself is a character in the book.

My 19 MO daughters favorite book
Every night my daughter wants us to go outside and look for the moon. When I saw this book I knew I had to get it and she LOVES it. We change the name from "monica" to our daughters name, and when you get to the moon pop-out page she always laughs and screams and jumps. I also recommend "The night moon fell down" - another wonderful favorite.

Wonderful concept poorly implemented
I bought this book for my 11-month son who is very hard on regular books. Unfortunately, he will not get to read it until he is much older because the fold-out pages are much too flimsy for a board book.

I was very disappointed to bring it home from the store and have the page with the moon that unfolds tear just from me opening those two pages.

Perfect for a beginner "reader"!
This is our 11 month old's favorite book! The bright pictures and the simple fun text really grab her attention when many other books have too many words per page or pictures that are too complex. She loves to help turn the pages and this one seems particularly easy for her to grab each page. We think this is perfect for when you are just beginning to read to your little one. It helps teach both parents and baby the joys of storytime.

The Best Book we have!
My son has loved this book since we started reading to him at 3 or so months. He has learned to turn the pages (and since the text is so short, I can read it before he turns!) He loves the bright simple pictures and especially the mirror at the end. He always kisses himself, it is SO cute. Course, now he kisses anytime he sees his reflection. This book is wonderful for the simple text and great pictures and the predictablity (a great pre-reading skill!) Our son is 10 months and will sit and "read" it to himself now! A must have for any child's nursery.

Only book my 8-month-old picks from her pile
My daughter Giana loves to read along with this book! She's acquired about 50 books so far - thanks to her mother's love of reading and some very generous friends - but this book is the one she always grabs. The pages are colorful and easy for her to help turn, the rhyming is cute, and apparently the taste is great, too, because she often ends up using it as a teether...

A pop-up book very popular with 20-30 month children
Clearly drawn and cleverly constructed pop-ups are the heart of this simple tale. Our 24 month child loved it from the outset (he first saw it at 20 months), and subsequent gifts of this book to the childern of our friends suggest that our experience is far from unique. For a good two months this was book of choice, but then went out of favour. Older children who have seen this book have appreciated the story more - so we expect our's will come back to it at about 30 months when he will understand it more. Strongly recommended

an exceptional lift-the-flap book with a sweet story
Kipper is looking for his teddy bear. Is it in the apple tree? No! Birds come flying out instead. Thus begins our odyssey into Kipper's world -- populated with mice, pigs and moon people (among others). Pop-ups are activated by lifting flaps and manipulating tabs. The latter may be difficult for young children, but they will most likely enjoy the action anyway.

The little surprise at the end is charming and sure to bring a smile to your little one's face.

Exceptionally well done.

Caveats: A few of the flaps are flimsy, so be careful if your child is rough on them. Kipper's usual friends (Pig, Arnold and Tiger) do not show up in the story.

What a Charmer!
Okay, I'm a sucker for pop-up books and a sucker for cute pups, so this one really couldn't miss for me. But this is a really cute pop-up and with the little light shining at the end....well, I can't imagine a child not falling for this book. Of course, if the battery burns out, a lot of the book's attraction fails...but that should be some time down the road.

A really sweet book, even if you don't watch the show
The pop-ups are beautifully done, and really appeal to my 16 mo old son, and he just loves the little flashlight revealed at the end of the story -- one to add to the list of classics on the bookshelf which have fun effects, like Eric Carle's work. To describe Kipper -- he is the most adorable, laid-back dog. Lifes events are taken in stride with great good humor, and lessons aren't IN your face like in Barney type shows. Kipper's A to Z is another wonderful alphabet book, and is one of his favorites too!. He has learned to say bee, bzz like a bee, duck, quack, and strangely enough -- the word Happy from that book! He likes to keep saying moon and doggie to this one :-) Enjoy it!

As an update, he is now 3 1/2 and took this book to show and tell one day. The flaps and pull outs still work so its a sturdy, simple, engaging book. The theme of being able to go to sleep even without your favorite item that you are obsessing about is also reassuring. (Kipper falls asleep, and we find teddy was reading a book at his feet under the covers with a flashlight) You know that Kipper will wake up in the morning and find his teddy.

This book is fun
My 2 year old loves this book. I don't let him look at it by himself as I fear it would not last, but he wants it read to him several times a week (and he has about 100 books)! I let him operate many of the flaps now that it is a little broken in and he thinks they are hillarious. The little flashlight at the end of the book keeps him guessing. We always turn out the light and he puts his finger over the flashlight to make his finger light up. It is a lot of fun to read, especially if you like the kipper cartoon series.
