This was just what I hoped for
I am so happy I chose this item for my children. Although my daughters are only 3 and 5, I wanted something to help them learn basic words and phrases. The lessons are simple with lots of reptition and cute songs. I put the CD on when they are playing and sometimes they participate but just as often not - but later, I'll hear them singing the number song.

Teriffic!
My daughter loved this program! She is homeschooled, and listened to it on her own every day (over & over) with no nagging from me. Because of the use of songs, I feel that a child who enjoys singing will gain more from this program than a child who doesn't. (most children's language programs I've found use a lot of singing) The reviewer who disapproved of the use of witches etc. in the book may not understand that the text is very *German*... I found after living in Germany that Germans have their own ideas about what is appropriate for children. (I see no point in learning a language which has been disjointed from its culture.) My daughter was 8/9 yrs of age when she used this program (cassette version) and nothing was offensive or inappropriate. All in all, a wonderful start to your child's study of German! 5 stars for being fun, easy to use, and educational. I only wish there were a level 2!

what happened to positive reinforcement?
i feel that this program uses vocabulary that should not be introduced to children as primary words when beginning a foreign language. it talks of ghosts, witches and other "scarey" things. i just don't feel that those words are constructive, but that other positive more essential topics could have been chosen to sing and learn about.

Excellent and very enjoyable
I purchased this book and cassette program for my 3 young boys who have an interest in learning German. They LOVE the program! They sing the songs regularly. It's no wonder, the tunes are catchy and the lyrics are understandable.

Ahoy There Little Polar Bear
"Ahoy There Little Polar Bear" is a story about a polar bear named Lars who lives in the north pole. One day, Lars swam out too far in the water and got his foot stuck in something. It was a net and it reeled him up and onto a fishing boat. Onboard, he met Nemo, the ship's cat. Nemo was willing to help Lars get back to the north pole, so when the ship docked at the next port, Nemo took Lars to see some other cats. They decided that Lars should get on one of the ships that was leaving for the north pole the next day. So they sneaked Lars onboard early the next day and soon Lars was back in his home at the north pole.
I think that this is a very good book because it is quite interesting. It can keep a reader's attention during the whole book I believe. The book has a cool plot with neat characters and good description. Lars is a fun character that is interesting just to hear about.

Sorry, But the Truth is, They Didn`t Like it Much
We still love LITTLE POLAR BEAR, the first book, but this just does not compare! Maybe at five and seven, cute is just not enough for my sons. The environmental message with the garbage strewn port is a point well taken, but LITTLE POLAR BEAR with all the different animals from a warmer climate he meets for the first time was far more interesting. According to my two, "this only had Lars, cats, and dead fish." The illustrations are cute, but the story was a little too simple and unexceptional-- no drama.

Ahoy There, Little Polar Bear
My daughter first discover Lars when someone gave her the video of the little polar bear (in german). For weeks/ months afterwards every second word was "Lars" (she was one at the time). Now on a recent trip to Germany I bought some of the books, so every night she wants to hear about Lars' adventures. Even though she has seen the video and heard the stories hundreds of time, she wants to hear them over and over again. And even though I have read them to her lots of times I'm still not bored with "Lars, the Little Polar Bear" and wont be for a very long time. The books are just that wonderful.

Beautifully illustrated, positive adventure stories for kids
Our friends from Germany sent Kleiner Eisbar (the German version) when our son was born. Then we discovered the books are available in English! This is just the first is a wonderful series that is not very well known in the U.S. Hans De Beers' illustrations are gorgeous and witty. The stories are simple, but entertaining, easy to read, and always leave you both inspired and feeling good at the end of each book. The Board Book is a great gift for new parents, and the large, hard cover editions are true keep sakes. We highly recommend the entire series-- You can't help but fall in love with Lars, the Little Polar Bear!

Wonderful introduction to children (and adults)!
I ordered this book as I am attempting to raise my son as a German speaker. The book covers all the big subjects like family, rooms in the house, the restaurant, zoo, park, farm, beach, etc. It gives both the german word and the english word above the picture. Better than I expected
I purchased this set for my daughters ages 6 and 10. They love it. The story is cute, the books are clear and the flashcards are very nice. There are several blank wipe off flashcards included so you can make your own. After using this set the first time my daughters where able to repeat parts of the story and understand what it meant. not just for kids
When I married a German man, my mother gave me this book as a wedding gift. This book was an excellent start on my journey to learning the language. I recommend it for any child or adult who is a beginner to beginner/intermediate in German. By using each word in a funny but grammatically useful sentence, reusing the same words throughout the book, and associating each with a picture that makes it fun and serves as a memory cue, I came out the other side of studying this book with the ability to understand most basic spoken German and to speak a bit myself. And I had fun reading it. Not many dictionaries can claim that.

Its only drawback is that, as with any language book not accompanied by a tape, there's not much help with pronunciation. (My husband read the entire thing out for me onto an audiotape.)

This book is great!
Along with the words are cute cartoons which help the child to visualize the words they are learning. Also there are phrases that uses the words, which helps them to learn sentence structure. A "kid friendly" title for budding bilingual children

Great starter book
This book has been a fun way to introduce my kids to German and helped me refresh on something I haven't taken since high school.While my kids are still pretty little (1 and 2) we've had a fun time learning that there are other words out there for dog, cat, bike, etc.The illustrations are great and keep my kids attention as well.
