Perhaps the perfect children's bedtime book, Goodnight Moon is a short poem of goodnight wishes from a young rabbit preparing for--or attempting to postpone--his own slumber. He says goodnight to every object in sight and within earshot, including the "quiet old lady whispering hush." Clement Hurd's illustrations are simple and effective, alternating between small ink drawings and wide, brightly colored views of the little rabbit's room.

Finding all of the items mentioned throughout the book within the pictures is a good bedtime activity--a reappearing little mouse is particularly pesky. By the end of the little rabbit's goodnight poem, the story has quieted to a whisper, and the drawings have darkened with nightfall. As you turn the last page, you can expect a sleepy smile and at least a yawn or two. (Picture book) ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars A little rabbit goes to bed but is not at all tired...
Generation after generation of children who have not wanted to go to sleep at night when told it was their bedtime have found an endearing manifesto of not being sleepy in "Goodnight Moon." Margaret Wise Brown poetry keeps things as simple as Clement Hurd's illustrations, which show a little rabbit who insists on saying "Goodnight" to pretty much every single object in the bedroom (including the old lady whispering "hush"). Eventually the little rabbit runs out of things to say "Goodnight" to and falls asleep. But we know that this scene will be repeated the next night and the night after that, when your child demands that you read this timeless children's classic from 1947 to them over and over again. There are certain books that every child should have in their library and if "Goodnight Moon" is not at the top of that list it has to be very close to the top for over half a century. Before this decade is up I am sure I will pass it on to a third generation of my family. How many generations is your family up to?

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Bedtime Book
My daughter received this book as a gift for her 1 yr birthday(She is now 22 mos old and still loves this book. We read it every night before bed). At first, when I read it, I wasn't impressed with it at all. But then, the more we read it, I became wrapped up in the story through my daughter's enthusiasm of finding the little mouse in the pages and realized the sheer joy of her learning experience through reading and imagination. The lines are very short so little ones won't be easily bored waiting for the page to turn and it is so much fun for her to find the little mouse in each colored page, to watch her put her little finger to her mouth and whisper 'hush' with the little old lady in the corner, and to point out other objects in the room.

The story is based on a little bunny going to bed and saying goodnight to various items in his room and with each turn of the page, the light in his room grows dimmer. '...Goodnight mush/And goodnight to the old lady whispering "hush"/Goodnight stars/Goodnight air/Goodnight noises everywhere' and with that the room is dark and the bunny is fast asleep. The book alternates between color pages and black & white pages during the story. The pages show full color the little bunny's room where a little mouse hides in different areas and is waiting to be found by little searching eyes. Then the pages alternate to black and white that show other items that are found in the room that the bunny says goodnight to.

I have also found that if my daughter is hyper before bedtime, this book helps calm her down through the repetition of saying goodnight, by lowering my voice with each page that we turn and it actually helps prepare her for bed just like the bunny.

This is a very short, very colorful and very fun book for little ones. I highly recommend it.

5-0 out of 5 stars A Must-Have Bedtime Book...
This book was one of our bedtime rituals. When I was weaning my son from frequent night-time breastfeedings, we would read this book at bedtime every evening. Sometimes I could hear him "reading" this book to himself in the dark if he was still have trouble settling down. Often, we read it in unison, and chuckled together. It's sweet and slow and comforting, and simply taking the time to cuddle and read it has a peaceful effect on both parent and child.

4-0 out of 5 stars Still a Favorite
I first read this book when my son was a year old. The simple words and colorful illustrations made it one of his favorite bedtime rituals. The book focuses on a little rabbit going to bed and saying "good night" to everything in his room as well as the moon outside. In addition to reading the book, I would ask my son to point to the things the rabbit was saying "Good Night" to. Especially finding the little mouse on every color page. (I believe he's on everyone). We used it like an identification game as well as a story. Simple words that rhyme like "Hush" and "Mush" are easy for little ones to learn and repeat.
An interesting aspect of the illustrations is that the room is drawn darker as the book nears its end. The magic was still there the other night when I read it to my son who is now 3 and a half. Like other books by this author, there is an essentially childlike quality coupled with that "hard to pin down" quality of a classic.

5-0 out of 5 stars If your child loves the original, they'll love this as well
My 21 mo old daughter loves the original "Goodnight Moon" and loves to play with the little acessories and popout features in this book. The story is the same and there is "lots to do" while turning the pages. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars very calming
My son is a very active 9 month old. There is only one other thing that maintains his attention. THE WIGGLES! God bless them! I read him this book every night to ease him into bed. He loves it! The rythmns of the spanish language work perfectly in this story. It never fails to calm him down. He loves the colors and the images in the book as well.

5-0 out of 5 stars Wonderful in Spanish, too!
Although I can't figure out exactly why, my boys love this book! This book is just as appealing to children in Spanish as in English. The illustrations are simple but my boys love them! They also really like the repetition. When we read it, I always add a "Buenas noches" to other items on the page. This has really helped expand thier vocabulary. It is one of my boys favorites, as it is for most children.

5-0 out of 5 stars Soft and Gentle Words
Remarkable tranlation of the original. My children adore "Goodnight Moon," and have me read it to them every night before they go to sleep. When they aweken, they read to each other the bilingual (Spanish/English) book, "Drum, Chavi, Drum! Toca, Chavi, Toca!" These two books are my children's favorites. One makes them fall asleep, the other has them singing and tapping the tumbadora sounds... I think my children will either become sleep therapists or musicians!

5-0 out of 5 stars A wonderful bedtime book
As American of Cuban descent, it is very important to me that my son learn Spanish. Teresa Mlawer did an excellent job with the translation. She was able to keep the spirit and flow of the original text, although she had to change a couple of things here and there and lose some of the rhyming, which is to be expected. It still has the same soothing musicality of the original, which makes it a great book to read aloud. I love reading this to my 8 month old son as part of our bedtime ritual. And no matter how fussy he's been before I start, he always settles down when he hears the first line.

4-0 out of 5 stars Excellent for small children
This was designed to read when you put to sleep a small child. The child says good night to all the things in a room. Plus while reading it, you can add features of the child's room to it. If your child is in that stage that wants you to repeate the same story over and over again. This is the book he or she will like. ... Read more

For a small bunny, the big world can be boiled down to "My slippers. /My pajamas. / Daddy's pajamas," and "Mother's chair. / My chair. / A low chair./ A high chair. / But certainly my chair." Back in print after more than 30years, My World by Margaret Wise Brown and Clement Hurd is every bit asreassuring and appealing to young children as its more famous companion, Goodnight Moon. Using the sameformat, this tale features the rabbit family as they go through their day:brushing teeth, eating breakfast, going fishing, reading stories, and climbinginto bed. Black-and-white illustrations alternate with full-color scenesdepicting the ever-expanding (yet still comfortably contained) boundaries of achild's life. In one image, the young bunny, clad in blue coveralls, hammershappily on his wooden truck, while Daddy, in matching coveralls, works on hisown (real) car just outside the garage. Very young fans of the classicGoodnight Moon will delight in recognizing the characters, illustrationstyle, and gentle rhythmic words in this over-50-year-old picture book. For thatmatter, older fans will be pretty tickled, too! (Ages 2 to 6) --EmilieCoulter ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars A Gentle, Simple Masterpiece.....
Those who were raised on and loved Goodnight Moon will be thrilled to see its companion book, My World, back in print after a 30 year absence. Get reacquainted with the rabbit family as little bunny explores the safe and familiar world around him. Margaret Wise Brown's gentle, understated text: "Mother's chair./My chair./A low chair./A high chair." or "Daddy's boy./Mother's boy./My boy is just a toy./Bear" is soothing, poetic and rhythmic and beautifully complemented by Clement Hurd's engaging family scenes. In My World he alternates black and white pages featuring the simple items of little bunny's life, Daddy's toothbrush hanging beside little bunny's toothbrush, a large and small comb lying next to each other or Daddy's slippers next to bunny's own pair of slippers with full color more expansive family spreads, the family preparing and eating breakfast or all washing up and getting ready for bed. Perfect for children as young as one, My World is a comforting, reassuring, timeless treasure to be read again and again and shared and passed down to future generations.

5-0 out of 5 stars Don't be fooled - children love it!
When I first read this book to my then one-year old daughter, I thought it was awful! She, however, would pick it up again and again, demanding to read it. It's been one of her favorites for over 9 months. In fact, I'm about to order a new copy because the first has been "loved" to death.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great book that kids love
After reading some of the disappointing reviews I felt compelled to write. This is a favorite of my son's! I think that's what we need to keep in mind is how the kids respond to it and what it's teaching. Of course it can get difficult having to read the same book five times in a row, but it's wonderful when the kids are so interested in reading! He loves seeing the differences between "my" and "daddy's" objects. The pictures are wonderful an he is mesmerized by the colors. Yes, the text is simple however it is interesting and is not sing-song ish. Enjoy!

5-0 out of 5 stars A five star review...
I see this book didn't get the best reviews. I can understand that. It appears to be a book with no meaning, but to my suprise, I found that kids see it much differently than adults. It is a concept book that contrasts things that are the childs by saying "my", and things that are someone elses, like "daddys", or "mommys". My daughter would ask questions like "is that my comb"? Anyways, it works well as a night time book. It is short and sweet, and it makes sense to kids! I think it is a really creative different book.

1-0 out of 5 stars Profoundly disappointing
After marveling at the sublime beauty of Goodnight Moon, we were extremely disappointed in My World. The illustrations are passable, but the writing is unforgivably bad. The elegant diction and serene rhythm of Goodnight moon are no where to be found. The writing in My World is insipid and lacks all the qualities that made Goodnight Moon so good. I can't believe the same author wrote both books. It's no Godfather II. ... Read more

Amazon.com Review

"Goodnight comb... goodnight brush... goodnight old lady whispering 'hush'..." With its soothingcadences and utterly charming pictures, Margaret Wise Brown and Clement Hurd's belovedGoodnight Moon has been an integral part ofmany a child's bedtime routine. Briarpatch has made one of the book's tranquil illustrations the centerpiecefor a board game designed with the very youngest of players in mind. The board features a gentle nurseryscene, with mittens and socks drying before a fire, kittens tussling sleepily on a braided rug, and the moonslowly coming into view in a star-sprinkled night sky. Four smaller (9-by-6-inch) playing boards are eachdivided into six squares, with snapshot scenes taken from the larger board; 24 sturdy, kid-proof matchingcards complete the set. The game itself features six graduated levels of play. In the first, and simplest, level, everyone wins, and children as young as 2 1/2 years old are introduced to the concept of takingturns. As levels progress (and children mature), kids learn to match colored cards with colored illustrations, then black-and-white ones, and fine-tune their memory skills by recalling the picture on an upside-downcard. At the most sophisticated level of play, a child will need to determine just which card is missing fromthe full set. Even at this level the rules of the game prevent bruised feelings by ensuring that every kid getsat least one card. It's a thoughtfully designed game that is bound to--like the book--furnish lots of happymemories. --Julie Ubben ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Every new mom should have one!
"Goodnight Moon" is a long-standing family tradition for us and while searching for a new copy for my soon-to-be-born grandchild, I stumbled upon this journal. What a fabulous companion to the book and also a wonderful diary for the new baby. My daughter was in tears when she got it and called me immediately to say how wonderful it was. She had been looking at a "Goodnight Moon theme for the baby's room and had no idea this existed. She started filling things in immediately! I highly recommend this for all new mom's.

4-0 out of 5 stars Only two criticisms.
I gave this journal a 4 stars because of the two minor problems: (1) The photo corners are worthless. They are not strong enough to hold anything. We end up using glue instead. (2) The size of the book is too small. One of the pages is for us to attach a birth certificate, but the birth certificate is a couple of inches bigger than the page. Otherwise, the book is fun to fill out, and look at occassionally.

5-0 out of 5 stars Goodnight Other Baby Journals!
When I had my first child,I was given several baby journals as shower gifts. I wasn't completely satisfied with any of them; some devoted too many pages to family background; some were too 'touchy/feely' for my taste; much of the artwork was too cutesy for me; and many baby journals have artwork which involves images (photos/art) of babies. I wanted a journal into which I could insert photos of MY baby, not be bombarded by images of other people's babies. I ended up cutting and pasting parts from all of the journals into a photo album in order to put together my first child's album. I discovered the "Goodnight Moon Baby Journal" when looking for a journal for my second child. It has artwork from the book, which is clearly child-oriented, but not sickeningly sweet, the colors are muted pastels of green, blue, yellow and pink, and there is not one picture of someone else's baby. I have used almost every page from this journal and think it is the best baby journal available. Besides, every child reads and loves "Goodnight Moon", so your child can become nostalgic looking at the illustrations in the journal as well as the mementos you insert. Finally, it even comes with adhesive tabs for inserting photos, which is a nice touch.

5-0 out of 5 stars Goodnight Moon Baby Journal
I bought this baby journal as a gift for my friend's baby shower. It was a hit! EVERYONE loved it. The journal is beautiful and high quality. I wish it was around when my kids were born! It also makes a great gift when paired with the Goodnight Moon Book--every baby's favorite.

5-0 out of 5 stars An Excellent Choice for Busy Moms
This baby journal is ideal for a busy new mom like me who wants to keep a record of my baby's "firsts" and physical development with minimal effort. It has a nice combination of fill in the info pages, plus blank pages for photos or your own special thoughts and memories if you're so inclined. Every page is beautifully illustrated in the Goodnight Moon theme, but it's not too busy or cutsie. I also like the compact size of the journal -- it's only about 8"x7", not an oversized binder like some other journals. I can keep it handy on my desk or bookshelf. My only criticism would be the photo corners included. They aren't strong enough to hold my birth announcement and photos in place, so I purchased my own corners. This is a sweet journal that I would highly recommend for new moms or as a shower gift. The pretty pastel color scheme (green, yellow, blue & pink) works for a boy or girl. ... Read more
