"Al Capone Does My Shirts"
"Al Capone Does My Shirts" is about a 12-year old boy named Moose, whose family moves to Alcatraz in 1934 for his dad's job as a prison guard there. If you don't know, Alcatraz is a maximum-security prison on a rocky island across the bay from San Francisco. Although it is no longer in use, in the 1930's, Alcatraz was prison sweet prison to such notorious gangsters as Al Capone and Machine Gun Kelly. You could understand why Moose isn't excatly thrilled to live there. But the other reason they moved is so his sister, Natalie, could go to the Esther P. Marinoff school. Natalie has a disease that is today called autism, but was unidentified in the 30's. Moose, wanting his sister to be "normal", agrees to move for her sake. Still, he isn't happy about living on what he calls "a 12-acre rock covered with cement, topped with bird turds and surrounded by water". But the other families that live on Alcatraz might change his mind.
This book is both funny and sad, and Moose is very easy to relate to. Other very dynamic characters make "Al Capone Does My Shirts" interesting. You'll finish it quickly and wish it were longer.

Every 10-12 year old should read this book
My 10 year old daughter read this book in just over 2 days! She could not put it down!!! After reading Choldenko's "Notes from a Liar and her Dog" she could not wait for this to be published. We are buying them as gifts for many summer birthdays. I am now reading it and am thrown right back into my childhood of many years ago. Well written (as was the first), gets right into a 10-12 year olds way of thinking. Children between these ages will be able to totally relate. We can't wait for next one!

a sensational read
Twelve-year-old Moose Flannagan doesn't know how to feel about his new home. Sure, it's neat to live right in San Francisco Bay, but the neighbors leave something to be desired. You see, Moose and his family live on Alcatraz Island, where Moose's father has a new job as electrician and prison guard. At school on the mainland, Moose is a bit of a misfit. Not only do the other guys think living on Alcatraz is a little weird, they also don't understand why Moose can't stay after school to play baseball.

Instead, Moose has to head home to watch his sister Natalie. Natalie has autism, a condition that had not even been identified in 1935, when this novel is set. No one is quite sure how to deal with Natalie. Most "experts" tell the Flannagans to put her in an institution, but the family would rather try a variety of experimental therapies, which yield mostly disappointing results. Moose is the only one who can really reach Natalie, and he constantly clashes with his mother about the best way to work with her.

Moose and Natalie discover a new kind of community among the several families who live on Alcatraz Island, including bossy seven-year-old Theresa and the warden's manipulative, sneaky (but also kind of cute) daughter Piper. In the end, the kids cooperate --- with a little help from Al Capone himself --- to find a place where Natalie can finally belong.

Believe it or not, this novel's unusual setting is based on fact --- the families of Alcatraz prison guards actually did live on the island. The author includes a helpful note explaining the historical facts behind the story, as well as a brief note about autism.

What really makes this a winning novel, though, is not the setting but its main character. Moose, who narrates the story, is responsible and trustworthy in spite of himself. The love he feels for his sister despite the frustrations she causes him shines through all his words. The relationships among Moose, his hardworking father and his well-meaning mother are also rich and dynamic. Even without its connection to the famous mobster, AL CAPONE DOES MY SHIRTS would still be a real hit.

You and Your Students/Children Should Read This!
This is a beautiful story that mixes all the elements of great fiction. Historical setting and characters, emotional involvment with genuine characters, laugh-out-loud humor, and a fresh writing style combine to form a unique and sensitive story. Highly reccomended for anyone interested in Alcatraz, Autistic children, or anyone looking for well-done modern kids lit piece. Also reccomended: Notes From a Liar and Her Dog(same author).

A fascinating read.
This novel worked for me on many levels. First, it was a gripping, fast-paced character study of a teenage boy. The author developed a sympathetic, interesting, flawed character. I kept turning the pages to see what would happen to him and how he would respond.

Second, the book was quite poignant in showing what it was like to live with an autistic child, especially in an era when autism hadn't been diagnosed and no one was sure how or if it could be treated.

Third, the setting was so interesting. It takes place on Alcatraz island when prison workers and their families lived there. I learned a lot, but I didn't feel like I was being instructed as I read.

Big help
My 2-1/2 year old son loved this book. It arrived on day 3 of our potty training effort, and it really seemed to motivate him to poop on the potty, which he had been fearful of, although he had been great at going pee pee on the potty and was already staying dry all day. This book and the one called "The Potty Book for boys" are both very good, I thought, in that regard. (I have two other potty books, but I can't remember their names. One has a noise button that makes flushing sounds.) I agree with those who say the wording is fine about having to "go" etc. without specific words - - but, let me say further that, "Hello, parents! Unless your potty "trainee" can actually read the words in the book, or unless you have so many different readers of it that you can't enforce the reading of a consistent version of it, you can MAKE UP, skip or substitute whatever words you want![.]!" I have changed "pee" to "pee pee" or added discussion of "poop" instead of just "going potty" in this book and others. Just make it consistent every time you read it, or they'll figure that out very quickly. Repetition is key. Good luck, potty trainers. FYI - - we are on day 8 now, and he is making all pee pee and all poops in the potty (the big toilet actually with a toilet ring), except we do still put him in his diaper for afternoon nap and nighttime.

Adorable photograph/cardboard book for potty training
This book offers colorful photographs, (not illustrations), of Sesame Street's Ernie and Bert in their baby-version form. The baby Muppets are simply adorable. The pages are made of cardboard, which is great for small children. The storyline covers the complete potty routine, including wiping and washing hands!

Very Good
We really like this book. Simple text. Simple but colorful illustrations. Easy message. We are starting to teach our 15-month-old son to use the potty. When we read this book with him, it looks like he understands what we are talking about and he seems to understand that he is like Ernie in that he smiles when we compare him to Ernie. Recommended.

Guaranteed Hit
Leave it to Sesame Street to produce a potty book that is as simple as 1-2-3. We loved the photos (instead of the usual drawings). Baby Ernie had some of the same toys we have - my daughter loved that! "Don't use too much, Ernie!" I often tell her when she rolls out too much toilet paper.

We have read almost every potty book available on the market as of 9/2003 (over two dozen!). Most fit into two categories: INSTRUCTIONAL books that introduce the skills needed to master the potty; and those that are primarily ENTERTAINING, for children who understand what is supposed to happen on the potty, but need extra time to make it happen.

I think Too Big For Diapers fits more in the ENTERTAINING category, although it includes washing hands with "sudsy soap" - a step many potty books omit. Worth the money.

If you are tired of diapers - just start reading and enjoy this book. After a couple of... days/weeks/months (I'll keep my fingers crossed) your honey will realize the process :D

WONDERFUL BOOK
I BOUGHT THIS BOOK FOR MY DAUGHTER WHEN SHE WAS 5 YEARS OLD. SHE HAS ALWAYS BEEN CURIOUS ABOUT HER BODY AND I HAVE ALWAYS EXPLAINED IT TO HER THROUGH A MEDICAL ASPECT. WHEN I WAS GROWING UP I HAD NO INFORMATION WHATSOEVER ABOUT MY BODY AND WHAT WAS GOING TO HAPPEN. I FELT WHEN I HAD MY GIRL SHE SHLD BE PREPARED FOR THE CHANGES. THIS BOOK WITH IT'S WONDERFULLY INFOMATIVE AND PLAIN LANGUAGE WAS JUST WHAT WE NEEDED. NOW THAT SHE IS 11 AND ON THE VERGE OF STARTING HER PERIOD, SHE ISN'T IN THE DARK ABOUT IT AND SHE SEEMS MUCH MORE CONFIDENT WHEN WE DISCUSS IT.

Excellent, Wonderful However you want to put it.
Every young girl who is worried or just curious about her period should have this book. It explains what happens to your body during puberty, the what ifs and freaquently asked questions from many girls.Parents- if you are looking for a book on this type of thing, this is the book you are looking for. "It's A Girl Thing" by Mavis Jukes is great, too.

Great for teens and pre-teens
This book has definitely helped me understand and feel comfortable with having my period. I didn't find this book inappropriate at all. It tells you about normal stuff that should be happening. I, personally, would recommend it to all pre-teens and teens!

Wow! Too Much!
My mom bought this book for me when I turned 12, and we looked through it together. Wow, I could not believe what I had read! It was way too innapropriate for pre-teens. I would reccomend "The Care and Keeping of You". By American Girl.

Tastefully presented
My parents used this book to help answer my questions about how babies are made when I was around 5 years old. This book provided just enough informtion to introduce me to the concept of sex and making babies without embarassing me too terribly much.

I notice that some reviewers worry that the book provides children with too much information or is too graphic. I find that the book would be incomplete if some of the information or the pictures were omitted. If they weren't included, I know I would have many questions unanswered as a child. The tasteful illustrations included in the book helped me understand the book's content, rather than forcing me to fill in the gaps with inaccurate and possibly scary images that could have lead to unhealthy views of sex.

As a child, I found myself really studying the pictures, cartoon images that are presented very tastefully and are actually sort of cute. They pictures do show the male and female anatomy, which is important information if a child is to understand how babies are made. They show a man and woman who love each other and are happy, things that would allow a child to have a positive and healthy perspective about sex and making a baby.

As a person who's had personal experience with this book as a child, I highly recommend it. I plan to use it with my own son in a few years.

(One last note: I believe this book is best suited for younger children that are asking questions or could be introduced to the topic of sex or making babies. It might be a bit juvenile for pre-teen.)

Great, understandable, no-nonsense information...
This is a wonderful little illustrated book that can help parents share information about sex and where babies come from with their children. I especially like the fact that this book is presented from the point of view of that sex is an expression of love, rather than just a presentation of physical facts and the mechanics of sex.

Information in the book is presented in a straightforward manner with "no nonsense and with illustrations." As for the illustrations, my wife told me that they also helped her feel better about her own body! How's that for a double benefit?

I appreciate the level of the presentation as well...pitched toward younger children...say, ages 7-10. Children really need good, accurate information from their folks, especially as they are surrounded by various bits and pieces of partial and even mis-information about sex which they hear from peers at school and other places.

The author uses terminology that is appropriate and understandable. A great little book.

While this is a great little book, I recommend using it in combination with another book, "How to Talk to Your Child About Sex" by Linda and Richard Eyre, as part of a combined effort of discussion and reading as you teach your child about sex.

Following my Mother's example 25 years later. . .
I doesn't seem like it, but just over 25 years ago, my mother sat me down with this book and we went through it. She was a teacher and very much loved books so we had our first talk about sex with the assistance of this one. Now, my daughter is 6 years old and asking questions. Although, I don't discourage her from asking, and I don't shy away from the questions, I'm not sure just how much detail I should get into with her at this age. So this book has come to my mind. I will purchase it and sit down with my daughter as my mother sat down with me. It's got cartoon pictures in it that don't make it quite so uncomfortable to discuss. And I prefer to give her the facts rather than for her get made up stories from other children.

Where did I come from?
My mother read this book to me when I was about 5 years old. It answered most of my questions in a straight forward way. To those who complained about the book being too grafic it is only grafic enough to get the message across. I would much rather deal with a small bit of graphicness than to have my child be confused. Now that I am a mother myself I plan on buying this to help teach my daughter when the time comes. If you want to teach your children where babies really do come from and want the real deal, not some fairy tale, buy this book.

Great Bedtime Stories For Children
After years of searching for techniques to help my 14 year old and six year old get to sleep at night, I have finally found the answer in Indigo Dreams CD. It IS the "relaxation response" for children of all ages.
I use the CD at night for my 14 year old when he is stressed out about a test at school the next day. My six year old often has seperation anxiety at bedtime and won't sleep by himself. All I have to do is put on Indigo Dreams and within minutes I can see his little eyelids start to droop and when he shuts his eyes I know I am home free and sleeping by myself in my own bed!

Children have something to look forward to!
Our children finally have a product to empower them to deal with anxiety and stress. My children have been exposed to violence on the television, been bullied in school and are under a tremendous amount of stress. My younger child gets teased for being overweight. I don't remember being this stressed out at their age, but I'm stressed out now dealing with their stress.

A friend introduced me to Indigo Dreams CD and my children LOVE this CD. They want to listen to the stories every night. In a short time they have learned to use the techniques that Lori Lite teaches to help them in their everyday lives.

My youngest loves the affirmations, while my older one adores the breathing and The Goodnight Caterpillar story. I was forced to buy another CD to avoid the fighting.

Happy Grandfather
After having a wonderful experience with "A Boy And A Bear", I decided to try "Indigo Dreams". I was not disappointed. My grandson and I sat on the couch and together we enjoyed the gentle, relaxing stories of Lori Lite. I have been teaching for many years. I recently had the opportunity to observe a class of first grade children as they listened to these stories. Wow!! What an amazing transformation. They came into the room very excited and within minutes they began to really listen to the stories,relax and follow along with the directions. I watched a boy I knew to be extremely hyper become very calm and quiet.This collection of stories is what we all need to help us manage our day to day stress. Best in breed.
I ordered several books of this type for my 11 year-old and read them all cover-to-cover. This is the best of the bunch in it's coverage of diverse topics and its practical, non-techinical tone. As a mom, I especially liked the section which throoughly explained the ramifications of an unwanted pregnancy. In contrast, the book "Asking About Sex and Growing Up" dealt with pregnancy via sections such as "Why would a girl let herself get pregnant?" (sometimes a girl secretly wants to get pregnant...) and "What happens when a girl gets pregnant?" (she may be upset for a long time afterward.) This isn't how I want my son to understand his role. "What's Going on Down There" gets my top grade.

Just In Time
We are at a time in society where 10 year old kids are making babies. My son was 10 when he read this book and I must say I couldn't have bought it at a more perfect time. This book explains the changes his body is going through and will go through in a few years. When I asked him if he understood what he was reading, he told me that he already knew or was feeling some of what the book outlined - He just didn't understand "WHY." He even translated to me in his own words what each chapter was about. I remember thinking to myself, not only is this book educational, it's also an easy and interesting read. I am a single mother and there is no way I could have ever answered his questions without this book. This book has made me and my son's life a little less complicated. Thank you Karen Gravelle, et al - Me and me son really needed this book.

All in all pretty good
My son was really glad I got him this book because he was having some quesitons to things that were uncomfortable. He has read the book cover to cover and says he feels prepared for things that might happen to him.

Good information-pefect for its target audience
This is a very illustrative book for adolescent's (even adults) that provides essential information about a very normal process of life- going from childhood, to adolescence to adulthood. Young teens have questions, many of the answers they ascertain are from a wrong source or one that gives partial information. The book however clarifies many questions in a plain and fun to read way which is the type of language that a young teenager may appreciate. Chances are anything too complicated will not be read but it is light in tone but accurate in detail which I find makes it ideal for young males and females to read. I read the Spanish version which is a translated version of English (Que pasa alli abajo) and I found it quite enlightening and could easily be understand. The way the information is presented is valuable for the target audience. Teens need to know and understand their corporal changes, know the implications of early intimate relations, STDs etc. In the day and age in which we live kids increasingly have more exposure to these themes at an early age and it is important that they get correct information and not a fabricated version from their peers. As a parent you may want to read the book and then decide if it's adequate for your teens. I thought it was superb for the target audience.

I keep recommending it again and again.
With three boys in the house, I can really appreciate this book. My eldest son read it at 12 and again at 13 and now again at 14 - it does a great job at being reassuring and never patronizing.

I feel comfortable that it gives kids certain needed information, like how to avoid unwanted pregancy and STDs, and yet is neither unrealistically expecting abstinence nor ignoring morals and values. ... Read more

Terrific book for Pre-Teens
I bought this book for my 9 (soon to be 10) year old and was impressed by the head-to-toe body care topics it covered. It touches on everything from hair care, to face cleansing, to washing your hands, to exercising and nutrition. I was wondering how I was going to broach the topic of starting her period with my daughter and this sure helped relieve my anxiety. It covered it honestly, straightforward and not intimidating at all. I think it helped because it was only a minor focus of the entire body-care book. (A brief introduction to what a period is and how to handle it and the fact that it is completely NORMAL and all girls go through it). I told my daughter that she was now in the "girls club" and could talk to me anytime about any of these topics she had questions about...she carried the book around for hours and immediately started cleaning her face, brushing her hair and being more conscious of her overall body care.
I highly recommend this book for preteens and am happy I bought it.

Absolutely the BEST book of its kind for pre-teen girls!
This book is truly on-target with its holistic approach to a girls understanding of her whole body, the changes she is undergoing, and good health and grooming. Topics are delighfully illustrated and cover head to toe care includng everything a girl needs to know about teeth and braces,facial care and zit tips, breast development, periods and feminine hygene, exercise, nutrition, and even taking care of "the girl inside."
It's upbeat, wholesome, candid, and very readable. I've reviewed most of the available literature for preteens and teens, and this book is a stand out. Your daughter and her friends will love it. Mine does! A great jumping off place for your own conversations about life with your special girl.

Great Way to Break the Ice
I bought this book the day my oldest daughter started her period. I wish that I had bought it before so that she could have been better prepared for what was coming.
I sat down with my nine year old and my eleven year old and we read the book from cover to cover. They learned so much from the book. I even learned a couple of things.
It is an easy read that covers many aspects of grooming and the menstrual period. Awesome read!

This Book rocks!!!
actually my friend had this book, she showed it to me, i was just to embarrased to ask my mom for the book,( i shouldnt be but for some reason i am) but i might ask my mom, because it looks very good, so im probably going to get this book. The only little thing was the tampom section. Anyways i thought it rocked, its perfect for preteens. I recommend it!! :)

FABULOUS BK FOR 9 YR OLD GIRLS!
My daughter (9 yrs, turns 10 in Nov) found this bk ON HER OWN at the Library on Friday and her nose hasn't come out of it since. It has opened up conversation betw her and I, where otherwise, I probably would have waited til her first session of "sex ed" coming up in 4th grade this coming year.

She is really interested in it - and has even been better about putting her own deodorant on - flossing her teeth and using mouthwash - and yesterday she said "Mom smell my arms", she said, "I used vanilla lotion!!"!!!

She is missing her fingers on her right hand so putting her hair up in a pony is a bit difficult, I have always done her hair. Yesterday she asked me to use my hair dryer - and she did her hair ALL ON HER OWN!!!!!!!!!!! I was so impressed! She has really learned a lot from this bk!

She's so proud - and for her - a child who hasn't shown a great deal of interest in personal hygeine, it has been a great bk!!

My daughter loves it!
This is a fun, easy to understand book for young girls. It is a cute story that covers the basics. It took my daughter about 2 months to warm up to the book, but now we must read it about 3-5 times per day -- usually in the bathroom. I like the fact that the character does not "play" with her potty, like in many of these types of books. The child's name in the book is Hannah, so this was also a plus for us, since that is our daughters name.
That being said, the quality of the binding is not what I expected, we are very careful with our books, yet it is coming apart in the middle.

Corny but effective
I bought this book after returning home from a business trip to learn that my 2 1/2 year old daughter had regressed in her potty training desire! So far, the book is very effective. We read it once a day and she listens actively. We talk about the little protagonist, Hannah, and what she's doing as she learns about the potty. I'm so glad that there are books out there for little kids, because the understanding that my daughter is gaining by reading this book seems to be working. It seems that presenting potty training in an intellectual (as opposed to simply behavioral) manner is helping with our toddler.

Before my daughter got into the bathtub every morning, i put her on her little potty and read her this book. At times, we would read it twice -- she loved it! (i replaced Hannah's name with her own). After 2 weeks of patiently reading it and going thru our ritual, the light finally went on and she knew what needed to be done -- pee pee! promptly, we laughed and clapped, just as Hannah does in the book. we had a 20 minute celebration and she kept looking inside the potty proudly. i give full credit to this book for helping my daughter understand the potty concept more easily. yay!

A Good Introduction
Hannah can eat her breakfast, brush her teeth, and even dress all by herself. Her biggest hurdle? The potty! As with most potty training experiences (mine included), Hannah and her parents need plenty of patience...and paper towels!

Reality check. I had two minor issues with the book: Hannah easily removes her diaper. My girls struggled to get theirs off (at least at first). And Hannah seems to graduate instantly from diapers to underwear after only one successful potty. In my house that meant instant mess!

Otherwise, readers will chuckle over Alyssa Capucilli's delightful rhyme, rapped by Hannah herself, and Dorothy Stott's hilarious antics of Hannah's potty partner Teddy the bear.

We have read almost every potty book available on the market as of 9/2003 (over two dozen!). Most fit into two categories: INSTRUCTIONAL books that introduce the skills needed to master the potty; and those that are primarily ENTERTAINING, for children who understand what is supposed to happen on the potty, but need extra time to make it happen.

I think The Potty Book for Girls fits more in the INSTRUCTIONAL category for the following reasons:

1) It identifies the purpose of the potty.
2) It specifies bodily functions such as "poop" and "pee."
3) Shows the transition from diapers to big kid underwear.
4) Includes the hand washing step.

My daughter is 22 months old and is interested in potty training. This is her new favorite book. What I like about it is that it is clean... no pictures of anatomy like in Once upon a Potty. A delight for "poopers" of all ages and species
"An elephant makes a big poop--a mouse makes a tiny poop." These straightforward observations mark the beginning of Taro Gomi's wonderful picture book "Everyone Poops." Not only is this beautifully illustrated book a great way to teach kids about a basic body function, it's also a wonderfully funny treat for adult readers.

I imagine that some prudish parents will be put off by Gomi's explicit (but charming) pictures of animals and humans taking "poops" of all shapes, sizes, and colors. But Gomi's basic message is sound: relieving one's bowels is a normal part of our everyday lives. In a world where too many people are too embarrassed to ask their doctor about colorectal cancer and other "poop"-related health problems, Taro Gomi's book is especially valuable. If the child (or parent) who enjoys this book feels less squeamish about discussing colorectal health concerns at a later time, than Gomi will have done more than just entertain; the author may have also helped save a life. One of my two-year-old's favorites: "Poop book! Poop book!"
My daughter first found this book while using the bathroom at my friend's house. It was part of the "bathroom literature" collection there. She loved it so much that she made me read it three times to her while she sat there. (She was toilet-trained early).

So, for her second birthday, my friend got her this book and she loves it. She makes me read it over and over. It's a favorite bedtime story and she really gets a kick out of it. When the book shows a snake and asks "Which end is the snake's behind?" She says "This!" and points. When the book asks "What does whale poop look like?" she answers "Stinky!"

I am less intrigued by this book and find the pictures somewhat freaky, but since I'm not the target audience anyway, who cares? If you're trying to teach your children not to be embarrassed or ashamed of bodily functions, it's a great book. The "everyone poops" message is definitely communicated and my daughter seems to get some satisfaction knowing that she is just like everyone else.

even my therapist loves it
thank god for this book. i used to only poop in jars in the safety of my dark closet and then i would quietly hide the jars over the ceiling tiles in the northwest corner of the house.
my therapist gave me this book and now i can use a bedpan without fear of retribution. once they write a book on urine, i'll be all set.

Good, but...
This book is a great way to give kids sex education. It covers all subjects clearly and in an interesting fashion. However, I disagree with the age range it is recommended for. It is recommended for ages 8-10, and, while most of the material is appropriate for this age group, some is not. Children should receive sex education in stages. A child who takes the book and begins to read will learn about body changes and babies being born, but many in the age 8-10 age group are not ready to learn about intercourse. I know this because I have a 7 year old and a 10 year old. My 10 year old read the book "Growing Up, It's a Girl Thing" and was quite thrown by some of the information on periods and body changes. But all of that information was perfect for the stage she's at -- it was the information she needed, but nothing that would worry or overwhelm her. (It is the book I'd recommend for the first step in a girl's sex education.) My daughter is very well read, but not ready for "It's So Amazing." I will hold on to the book until she is.

This book is So Amazing!
Every parent should have this book available for their children when they start asking those delicate questions. It's So Amazing! cover topics from maturation, to reproduction, homosexuality, and sexually transmitted disease in a non-judgemental, factual way. The bird and the bee that are part of the learning audience help children to feel comfortable with their own reactions to the material covered; the bird is excited and anxious to learn more, whereas the bee is apprehensive and not quite comfortable with it all. The illustrations are humorous, helping to lighten such serious topics but without detracting from the importance of it all.

All topics may not be appropriate for most 7 year olds. However, chapters are arranged to start from the most basic topics and progresses to topics that are more sensitive. If the book is read with parent and child together, new chapters can be introduced as the child is ready to learn and understand more. It is also an excellent choice for a child to read alone.

After the experience of learning sex education from the dry, clinical books available that traumitized me when I was growing up, I am very pleased to know that my son's experience will be so very different from my own!

FAR more than what I expected!!!
First off you need to know this is a large book. It's huge. The picture does not at all convey how huge this book really is. It's about two times the size of a normal size book. I really don't think the description is adequate. I expected this to be a basic story book. It is far more than that. This is a very scientific book. It is a lot like the book "A Child is Born" only geared for kids. By this I don't mean watered down or talking down to kids. It is perfect. In fact I would venture to say you could actually use this as your primary educational tool when teaching your kids about sex for the first time. I originally got a book that was advertised as being the best book to read to your kids when telling them about sex. Actually I think this is 1000 times better b/c it has pictures, it tells it graphically but in cartoon style. It is FAR less traumatic for those parents who don't feel comfortable broaching this subject. I will be using this as my primary book from now on. I am fully impressed. It is really underrated if you ask me.

Recommended for 9 year olds and older
This is a very comprehensive book about everything your child will need to now about childbirth and childbearing till about mid teens (including such issues as multiples, IVF). The reason I recommend this book for 9 year olds and older is because of the complexity(read confusion) of some of the egg-sperm pictures and even more important the book introduces the concept of intercourse. One of the pictures featured has a couple kissing under the blanket, the term sexual intercourse is introduced in the book.
It also has the introduction to the sexual maturity. Having a 6 and 3 year olds and expecting an addition now, I was looking for a simpler book to introduce/ answer questions about childbirth that would be appropriate for my older kid and did not find this book fitting the purpose.

The best book about sex education for kids
We first learned of this book from the library. It is so wonderful that I had to purchase it. My son and his fifth grade class are just beginning the sex education curriculum. I wanted him to be fully aware of what he was going to be learning before they began this study. I was amazed at how ready he was to learn. I didn't think he was this ready to hear all of this. Boy, was I wrong. It explains things in a way that is non-threatening to the child. It is a completely animated story. It explains the plumbing differences between the sexes. It even explains what the different meanings of the word sex. It also shows examples of different kinds of love you can have for people and things like stuffed animals. This book is very detailed on where babies come from and how they are really made. The book also has a light side to it. The bird character wants to learn more about it all and his friend the bee doesn't want to hear any of it. I think that is exactly how a lot of children are when it comes to this subject. It explains that some of the things in the book might seem wierd or gross to the child right now and that it's okay to feel that way right now. Not for preteens
I bought the third edition of this book hoping it would be something my ten year old son could refer to if he has questions he is embarassed to talk about. The book is very factual without being overly clinical, but some of the topics discussed at lenght are more suited for older teens. The exhaustive list of slang names for male and female body parts really isn't necessary -- adolescent boys seem to do well in that department all by themselves! I also feel that the chapter "Girls and Puberty" has far more detail than a pre-teen boy needs or can handle. The book would be much better if it were presented in a loose-leaf format so I could give my son the sections he is able to handle at his age. I also wonder why the author has removed chapters on the important topics of birth control and STD's, which she says were in her previous edition. The book will certainly help me in my talks with my son, but I'm still looking for the right book for him to read on his own.

What;s Happening to My Body? Book for Boys: A growing up Gui
I initially borrowed an earlier edition of this book to read, as my son is 11 years old. My husband is very uncomfortable in discussing puberty with his son, and even with me. He was a very late bloomer and therefore, not a great resource on when things may occur or start to occur in my son. I read the book and then sat down one night with my son. As we sat on the couch, I read the book to him, as he looked on. We laughed some, we talked some, we giggled some, we learned a lot. His father came in during our conversation and sat down. Dad then was able to become part of a discussion that had already started and did not have to bring up himself. This worked great for our
family. I found humor, so did my son. It did have a lot of slang terms, but every child may not know exactly what they mean, and this way, my son now does and can be better educated in the slang and in the correct names. Too graphic? I do not thinks so, there were certainly some chapters we did not address
at this time, as they are more appropriate for another (older) time. The book is around the house so he can read it as he wants, there is nothing in the book that I do not want him to know. Very educational for me as well as I grew up in a family of females and therefore had no idea at what ages certain things happened to boys. My son then was able to talk to me about some of the changes that were happening to him. He then had other questions? I was able to discuss these questions with him intelligently and comfortable in my facts. He was very nervous about going through puberty, now he is not. I believe this a book for the family, not just to be handed to the child. Every child has questions that need to be answered, this book has most of the answers. I found it nonjudgemental. It did not discuss abstenance in its chapter on birth control, I wish it had, but the book will help us as a family discuss the topic of birth control and we can add in our moral values as we teach, learn and discuss.

My 10 yr old REALLY thought this book was GOOD!
He said it explained a lot about some things he just didn't feel like asking me or his father about. I am glad I got it for him. He feels much more comfortable with his pre-teen body now.

Parents; yes- Teenage boys; no way.
I was looking for a book for my stepson, (he's almost 12) and noticed that this book received a lot of positive reviews- so thought I'd try it. I just wanted a book that my wife and I could read first; turn him loose with it on his own, then talk with him afterwards about what he thought of it. Unfortunately, we won't be giving it to him, and here's why:
This book doesn't really relate to 8 to 15 yr old boys- on their own level. The words are way too big, and the book's approach is way too clinical. I remember being a teenagage boy, and I think it's safe to say that if you try to work words like "bulbourethral glands" or "pre-ejaculatory fluid" into the conversation- you lose 'em REAL fast. No kid would EVER sit around reading it! Then about every 10th page, you'd find a crude drawing of everything from simply naked boys; to cross-sections of penises, breasts, and vaginas. It ranged from clinical to slightly creepy, and just put yourself in the shoes of a teenage boy: you may want to know what it feels like to touch a female breast, but cross-sections of milk ducts can be a little scary to think about. And really- who actually needs an arrow pointing to a "nipple", in order to know what (or where) it is? "Oh THAT's a nipple! How illuminating! Can't WAIT to get my hands on that uterine lining"!:-) Which brings me to my main complaint about the book: We searched cover to cover, but found NO sense of humor in the approach- and I believe that if you want to help teenage boys to be comfortable about the topic of sexuality - you need that. Let's just say that if you want to give your teenage boy a book that he'll actually read, enjoy,and benefit from - Keep looking.

Hated it!
I bought this book for my 14-year-old nephew. When the book arrived I scanned it and found it had a lot of sexuality information that I disagreed with. I thought this book was going to be straight health & science...this is what happens to your body as it matures, this is what you can expect. A middle schoolers piont of veiw
I have to say I haven't completely read this book, but I stumbled across it while doing some research at my school library. Personally, I think it's great that this book is so open...sex shouldn't be hidden away in the closet. In this day and age, it's important to talk about sex, and books like this are helpful. Many kids my age have sexual encounters, but still don't know all the basics. I live in an international community, and some parents leave their children in the dark. Further more, no matter how well a parent educates their child, there are ALWAYS questions, trust me. It's good for anyone, to be able to get answers, because talking about sex with your parents is very rarely comfortable. However, a lot of the illustrations in this book disturbed me. I know at my age it's not nessary to be embarresed, but some of the pictures were...too detailed...too graphic. It's great to be open about sex and love....just make sure it doesn't go too far.

It's Perfectly Normal
Kids talk about sex A LOT. The problem is they often pass on incorrect information. This book is perfect to make sure that what they learn is correct, accurate and healthy. I read 1/3 of this book to my 9-year-old daughter and despite the late hour, she was mesmerized. The pictures are explicit, but is necessary so that children make no mistake about what is being discussed. It also has funny cartoons that address people's attitudes about sex, and which a kid can relate to. I like the part where it covers the various definitions of sex: gender, desire, reproduction, intercourse and homosexuality. Kids really do get warped concepts of sex and this book covers all the ways people talk about it (silly jokes) and their attitudes about it. The book also covers anatomy, puberty, families and babies, birth control, and staying healthy. It's well organized, well-written and concise. I recommend every parent who hears the word sex uttered from their child's lips, read this book to him/her. Even teenagers can benefit from this information.

WARNING! This book needs supervision
Although this book is informative I do not believe it was meant for the shelves of a school library! Parents or guardians should go over this book with their children/young adults. The drawings are very graphic and do not belong in the hands of the inexperienced without supervision. Our Jr. High School currently has this book on it's shelves because of the high reviews and the "kids" check it out to pass around with their friends. It isn't being read but the pictures get a great deal of exposure. Please check with your school library for this book on it's shelves.

Very shocked
While I agree that the things discussed in this book are important to teach your children I strongly disagree with the graphic nature of the illustrations and some of the content in this book. I have also read that some organizations like Planned Parenthood are pushing this book to be placed in grade school libraries. If this is true I as a parent of a pre-school daughter am OUTRAGED that our public schools are allowing this. I don't believe this is appropriate material for children that young. This is borderline pornography. I also believe parents should be the one to share this information with their children not some teacher with a slanted bias toward some of the content in the book, ie..homosexuality, abortion, how to use a condom, etc. Parents should go to their schools and see if this is happening and voice their opinions.

Not for preteens...
I personally do not think that I would use this book at all for any age child or teen, but I am very concerned that its "recommended" age range is 9-12. I wouldn't want my 9-year-old child seeing drawings of naked men and women, learning how to put on a condom, and reading about how scientists are "working hard" to make the abortion pill available to the general public. This book treats abortion very lightly, making it appear to be something not serious that people do casually, not the life-altering and painful decision that it is. Awesome Book
Definitely one of the best books I've read. I've been through anorexia myself, so I could really relate to it. It also kind of helped me, in a way. Morgan is a wonderful writer. I have re-read the book twice and have enjoyed it every time! I lent it to my friend who also struggled with anorexia, and she feels the same way about the book as I do. Definitely a great buy.

Good For Both Adults and Teens
Although the book is fictional, it is based on the wuthor's real-life experiences. This makes it more realistic than quite a lot of fictional books. The story is written in the style of a diary, from the point of view of Blythe. At the outset, she is 13, but gradually gets older as the book progresses. It is set in America. I don't want to give too much away about the plot, but Blythe's problems begin when she starts to compete with Laurie, another girl in her year who has anorexia. It spirals from there. I would recommend this book to both teenagers and adults as it's very good for an afternoon's reading. It's not too heavy, either.

Worth your time!
I read this book a year ago and by far it is one of my most favorites. Over a time period of four years i was anorexic and to see that i was not the only only one and that someone has had it a lot worse than me shows that i can make it. I recommemnd this book to all teenage girls everywhere. Even if they are not anorexic or do not think they have a weight problem it will make them understand how t help people around them who are!

As honest as STICK FIGURE: A DIARY OF MY FORMER SELF
After reading Lori Gottlieb's STICK FIGURE: A DIARY OF MY FORMER SELF, I didn't think I'd find another collection of diaries that spoke about anorexia with such honesty and compassion. I've struggled with anorexia, and both books (STICK FIGURE and this one) have been by my bedside because I find it helpful and comforting to read parts of them over and over. I strongly recommend both books for not just anorexics, but for families and friends who truly want to understand the experience and what they can do to help.

My friend asked for this book as a birthday present. When I went to buy it, I read the back and wanted to read it for myself. I ended up reading the whole book (after I gave it to my friend) within 2 and a half hours. This book was definantly a page turner. Oh, LOVELY!
"I used to think that I was small...a little body, that was all." With these words, the reader immediately identifies with this small child's wonder at all that is around him. The trees seem so tall as he looks upward through their branches! The magnificence of the night sky, so filled with glorious points of light, seems so immense. Who could ever know why those many stars are so bright and beautiful or where they get their vibrant light, and how could he possibly fit into this wondrous place - and most of all, where could he go for answers?

This book tells its story by speaking of things that children see: trees, plants, animals, and people - plus the moon, the sun, the stars, and even candy bars. Amazingly, children who read this book seem to automatically understand its deeper meaning; "Your body is just a little part of the light that shines within your heart." All I See Is Part Of Me is about innocence and wonder, and it is beautifully written for small children. I highly recommend enjoying this book with your child. The poetry is charming and the colorful illustrations are innovative and imaginative - perfect for viewing the world and the universe through a child's eyes.

Beautiful Book for Children and Adults!
This books uplifts the spirit and helps children to realize they are part of everything they see,hear,touch, and smell. A spiritual book with no suggestion of whom they should believe in. They simply mention prayers being said to all that "IS". The illustrations are beautiful and very enchanting. Our 2 1/2 yr old son wanted this book read to him every night for several months and is still one of his favorites. Most of the sentences rhyme and our son has memorized the entire book and often reads along with me! Highly recommended to those who are seeking a sweet bedtime book w/ deeper thoughts for children to ponder.

This is my FAVORITE children's book!
If I could give this book 10 stars, I would.

I am raising my family with an earth-centered faith, and have been searching since before my 2 year old was born for a book that is simple enough for him to stay focused on through the whole reading, yet one that conveys a message of oneness with the world around us. This book does that in the most beautiful, sweetest way. When I opened it and read it to myself, I realized I had tears in my eyes. It is the sweetest story of a child who is questioning himself and the world around him. By asking questions of the Sun and the Star, he realizes that he is part of everything in this world, and everything is part of him. At the end of the story, he falls asleep knowing in his heart that he goes on everywhere, and everything beautiful in the world exists within himself.

I read it to my son this afternoon and he was totally captivated with the illustrations and the short rhymes on each page. This book will be our bedtime book each night, and I'm sure will become the gift to give to other children we know. This is a must have for any family who appreciates the innate wisdom and beauty of nature and the fact that we are all connected to the world and each other.

A Picture Book About Non-Duality
ALL I SEE IS PART OF ME is written for the child in each of us who longs to feel a sense of wonder and mystery. Great book to enhace a person's self-esteem and feeling of connectedness to the world around them.

The narrative is in verse, a joy for young children. And the illustrations are just right, drawings increase the richness of the text immensely. You can see the grain of the paper on which they were drawn adding to the flavor and delightfullness of the book.
