Book Description

Did you know that the world's favorite snack is popcorn? That what you eat every year could fill about 170 grocery bags? That fewer than half of the world's people use a knife, fork, and spoon? Welcome to the world of "Food Rules!" Cool enough for kids to savor, scientific enough to be an invaluable resource, this is the most comprehensive book on food and nutrition ever created for kids. It's full of mouthwatering stories, jokes, recipes, rumors, and facts, and a supermarket of zany illustrations. Definitely food for thought. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Great fun for kids
What a marvelous book. It explains the functions of digestion in a fun way. It has a couple of "fart" and "poop" jokes which are entirely appropriate to a book about food and nutrition, and allows a kid to hear a little "naughty" joke, but the clean kind of naughtiness that a kid can laugh at, instead of the "dirty" jokes that they are probably being exposed to.

5-0 out of 5 stars Haduch rules!
As a kid who likes science and math, I think Haduch rules! I have read several of Mr. Haduch's science books and they are always funny and full of good information. I even used his book on tornadoes for a school project (and got an "A".)The food book is very funny while telling you about science and how your body uses food. I hope he does a book on dinosaurs.

5-0 out of 5 stars Science and nutrition made fun for kids.
Now maybe kids will eat what's good for them! This book is one of the rare kids' books that addresses kids as people to be talked to and entertained....not to be talked down to or preached at. As a mom who has kids interested in science....and off-the-wall humor...I appreciate a book that combines both. Thanks!

5-0 out of 5 stars One of a Kind!
This hilarious and well-researched book is, by far, the best children's book on nutrition I've seen. Haduch's well-crafted prose both instructs and entertains; the book is filled with off-beat facts and wacky humor to keep kids laughing while they learn important health information. Every school and public library should have this book! ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars GREAT BOOK
THIS IS A GREAT BOOK. MELISSA AND JORY'S FRIENDSHIP IS GREAT. JORY STAYS BY MELISSA DURING HER WORST TIMES WITH THE LEUKEMIA. THAT'S THE BEST THING I LIKE ABOUT THE BOOK. ALSO I LIKED THE WAY MELISSA SLOWLY ACCEPTS HER DEATH. GREAT BOOK.

4-0 out of 5 stars Combined Stories
This book is actually composed of two novels that were previously published. This is the story of Melissa and Jory, two best friends from very different backgrounds. The first book is from Melissa's point of view when we find out she has cancer and how she copes with that. Melissa's brother, Jory's not-so-secret crush, doesn't take the news well and seems to be against the world. The second story continues with the friendship and tells how Jory learns to cope with Melissa having cancer. This is a classic Lurlene McDaniel book for all thos familiar with her work. For first timers I do recommend this book and I ask what took you so long to discover McDaniel's wonderful books. I liked it because it gave two different views and it made the characters have depth. I really recommend the One Last Wish series and the Dawn Rochelle novels for those who want to read more of McDaniel's work. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars "Out of Darkness"
Out of Darkness is a story about Louis Braille. Louis Braille was blind in the year 1812. It happened when he was a little boy. Louis was playing with a knife from his father's tools. He was trying to make holes in a piece a strong leather. The knife slipped and it stabbed his left eye. Louis had to stay in a dark room to help his eye heal. An infection spread from his left eye to his right eye. In 1812 there was no way to control his serious infection. 15 years later Louis Braille invented braille lettering for all blind people. I think that this is a good book for young readers to read because it shows good friendship between people.

5-0 out of 5 stars Louis Braille
This is a great book! This book tells you about a real person name Louis Braille! Louis Braille is the person who invented books for the blind people.Louis invented braille when he was just a little boy.He was blind because he was playing with his father's tools while his father was talking to someone. When Louis was playing with the tool it poked one of his eye and it started bleeding badly. The eye that was poked by a tool had a hole in it.The eye started infecting the other eye.Later on Louis was totally blind.

5-0 out of 5 stars Inspiring!
This fact based biography is one of the best I have encountered for children starting at about grade three. Adults will also enjoy. The book documents the life of Louis Braille. Born and raised in a small town near Paris, Louis suffered a tragic injury at the age of 3, which rendered him blind for life. The story captures the true essence of courage and the triumph of the human spirit; to meet even the most seemingly insurmountable obstacles with dignity, tenacity and unshaken faith. Louis did not give up. Despite many frustrations and setbacks, his attempts at creating and perfecting the Braille system were successful and accepted and distributed world wide. Unfortunately, Louis died in his early forties and was not here to witness the magnitude that his system bestowed on the world of the blind, their families, loved ones and associates. But he did pass away in peace and in the knowledge that his mission had been fufilled. Louis opened a door to the visually impaired, and in this way significantly transformed and enhanced many, many lives by providing this invaluable means of reading, writing, and communicating. Louis Braille was a true hero and will remain so for all time.

5-0 out of 5 stars GREAT BOOK!!!!
THIS BOOK TELLS HOW LOUIS GOT BLINDED AND WHAT HE DOES TO OVER COME THE OBSTACLE OF NOT BEING ABLE TO READ. HE REVISES AN ALREADY MADE PLAN OF RAISED DOTS AND DASHES MADE BY A SEA CAPTAIN-NOW KNOWN AS BRAILLE-AND BECOMES AN ASSISTANT TEACHER, PROGRESSES AND THEN EVENTUALLY RE-FOUNDS THE SCHOOL!!

5-0 out of 5 stars A top pick for children coping with cancer in the family
This is one of the best books we found when our family was dealing with a recent cancer diagnosis. It is sensitive and caring and provides concrete examples for positive steps families can take to help children cope successfully with a tough situation. Appropriate for our children, aged 3,5, and 7, it is a book even adults will appreciate. We have used the "Paper Chain" concept to reach out to adult friends hospitalized for a variety of reasons. We found that its broad potential gave us a way to talk about cancer in the context of many illnesses -- and how coping skills are useful for everyone. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars A funny look at sibling rivalry
Arthur gets the chickenpox just before the circus comes to town. So he gets all the attention and care ~~ leaving his sister, D.W. out in the cold with jealousy. She fakes getting chickenpox and learns a lesson the hard way.

It's a cute look at sibling rivalry and envy. The story is readable and fun.

Once again the illustrations are fun to look at ~~ bright and colorful and cheerful. My boys can't read yet but they really enjoy the illustrations and I enjoy reading the stories.

4-0 out of 5 stars Primarily focusing on enviousy
Well, now that a hopefully working vaccine for chicken pox has been developed, this story is still great for teaching one about being careful what he or she wishes for.
The circus is in town-everybody's excited to go, but when Arthur is sick with chicken pox, D.W. comes home from play group to find Arthur lying on the couch so wishes she was sick so pretends to think Arthur is just pretending to be sick. And as the story continues, D.W. shows how she wishes she was the sick one-and in the end, Arthur is better, but D.W. gets the chicken pox.
This will be a great book to teach about being careful what you wish for even when chicken pox no longer exists.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great--but Beware!
My kids thought this book was very funny. I did too, but not solely for the reasons they did. Chicken pox that only lasts a week? Come on! But the main problem this created in my home was that when my kids came down with chicken pox, they pulled this book out. Uh-oh! They wanted crazy straws, and a back rub, and every other special treatment that Arthur received. But it was reassuring for them to see that chicken pox is very common, and even Arthur survived. At least I got them to try the oatmeal bath!

5-0 out of 5 stars Arthur's Chicken Pox
I found this book to be very humorous and fun to read. I loved watching Arthur receiving special treatment for being sick and D.W. pretending that she also had chicken pox. This book is also great because many young children can identify with Arthur and D.W. . As a future teacher, this book is a must for any book collection.

5-0 out of 5 stars One of the best Arthur books
My 4-year old son loves to go to the library because he can't wait to see which Arthur books will be available. We've read almost all of them, and this is our favorite. (Arthur's Halloween is a close second.) I'm buying buying a copy from Amazon.com as a gift to his nursery school class. ... Read more

Book Description

One of the world’s foremost sleep educators, Dr. James B. Maas of Cornell University, unveils his first children’s book, Remmy and the Brain Train. The author, who teaches the nation’s largest university lecture course, uses his award-winning pedagogical expertise to create a fun multi-dimensional learning experience for children ages 4 to 8. Remmy and the Brain Train is designed to help improve a child’s daytime alertness, mood and performance. The book is a follow-up to Maas’s New York Times bestseller, Power Sleep (Random House and Harper Collins), widely praised as successful in helping adults enjoy a happier, healthier and more productive life.

Remmy and the Brain Train follows a tired young Remmy through a groggy day of exhaustion and confusion. He has trouble with math, spelling and remembering names, and is feeling moody, upset and sad…but does not know why. That night Remmy is visited by the irrepressible magical train conductor, Doctor Zeez, who whisks him off on an exciting adventure through the Land of Good Sleep. Here Remmy learns of the voyage his mind and body embarks on every night, and how developing good sleep habits makes him stronger, smarter, happier and healthier.

Remmy and the Brain Train is illustrated by Guy Danella and includes a read-along, sing-along CD by award-winning children’s songwriter/performer Suzanne Scheniman. A myriad of sound effects enrich the detailed whimsical illustrations depicting Remmy’s world. Suzanne's wonderful "Sea Songs" can be obtained on amazon.com in the popular music section. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Its sleepy time!
Kids today aren't getting enough sleep. It is obvious when you look at the number of children who are being labeled as having ADD or ADHD, when all they really need is more sleep. If you are a parent of a young child, I highly recommend this book, not just for your child(ren) but for parents too. Its important for parents and children to understand how sleep, or lack of sleep affects the body and more importantly, the mind. Remmy and Dr. Zeez help children to understand why they need to get their sleep and how they can benefit from getting 9 hours of GOOD sleep every night. I'm all ready reading this with my 6 week old daughter. The play along CD which accompanies the book is a great bonus which I find relaxes me as well as my daughter as it is played. Enjoy some good rest...you and your child(ren) deserve it!

5-0 out of 5 stars A fantastic journey that educates while it entertains!
"Remmy and the Brain Train" is an exhilerating ride that will fascinate both parents and their young children, a rare accomplishment in children's literature. It's a clever, behind-the-scenes look at the values of sleep, that is just as educational for my husband and I, the parents of an inquisitive 5 year old, as it is for my son. Through the delightfully fun dialogue of Dr. James Maas's characters we are taken on a nightly journey to the land of great sleep and are cheerfully explained the benefits of bedtime...something ALL parents can appreciate! "Remmy and the Brain Train" is the perfect marriage of a working didactic tool and an imaginative, creative fairy tale. The principles behind better sleep are woven seamlessly into the story, and because awkward textbook jargon is thankfully nowhere to be found, our son actually understands why sleep is important! Just as I was intrigued and motivated by Dr. Maas's first book, Power Sleep, a few years ago, so now is my child by this, his first foray into children's literature. I would recommend "Remmy" heartily to all parents who want to raise a happy and healthy child!

5-0 out of 5 stars Awesome Book
My almost 4 year old received this as a Christmas Gift and he loves it! The accompanying CD makes it even better with a calming rythem and memorable phrases.

5-0 out of 5 stars Remmy ant the Brain Train
A very good book and the CD by Suzanne Scheniman is outstanding! It's geared toward children, but even adults will listen over and over.

5-0 out of 5 stars And poetry to boot!
Maas does a fine job in explaining to children why it's important to sleep. He writes in rhyme, and the colorful funny pictures add to the entertainment.

For adults, I give my strongest recommendation for Dr. William Dement's The Promise of Sleep. Stanford sleep researcher Dement covers everything from sleep pathology, dreams, and how sleep-load even affects your intelligence and internal organs. If you love a medical detective story, or just want help in physically feeling better, go check it out! ... Read more

Book Description

In this timeless classic, the Peanuts gang faces the serious sickness of a good friend with all the sensitivity, caring, and warmth that is the trademark of Charles Schultz’s work. Why, Charlie Brown, Why? is a heartwarming story of a child dealing with great challenges and profound questions.

When young Janice is diagnosed with leukemia, Charlie Brown looks for answers, Linus becomes her protector, Lucy doesn’t understand, Snoopy dons his '”World’s Greatest Surgeon” togs, and the whole gang does some soul searching. In his own inimitable style, Charles Schulz brings this touching tale to life. With charm and compassion, he tells of the effect of Janice’s illness on her family, her classmates, and, of course, her friends.

For more than a decade, Why, Charlie Brown, Why? has helped children to understand what happens when someone they love is sick. Now this wonderful book is available once again to serve as a guide for future generations.

3-0 out of 5 stars Why, Indeed.
My sons, ages 9 and 11, were recently exposed to this book and video as part of the grade school curriculum. They were both really freaked out by it and it created a lot of anxiety in our household. My eldest cried, convinced that he had cancer, and my youngest said "Why would they show such a terrible movie to kids -- it had Charlie Brown, but it was NOT funny at all." I guess he's always associated the lovable Peanuts gang with Christmas, the Great Pumpkin, and Snoopy, not hospitals and cancer.

So my criticism is directed not so much with the material itself, but with the decision to present it to children. With things like terrorism, war, divorce, AIDs, school shootings, and everything else kids have to worry about, why dial up the anxiety even higher? When it comes to children, a lot of adults would do well by learning how to BACK OFF.

For families coping with cancer, I'm sure this book is probably helpful. For the rest, I think cancer is a topic better left to the "cross that bridge when we come to it" category. Educators, please keep this in mind.

5-0 out of 5 stars An Exceptional Peanuts Book
This book, or the video by the same title, is excellent for elementary school aged children confronting cancer in themselves or their families. I have donated multiple copies of the book and video to Children's Memorial Hospital in Chicago for their use with young cancer patients and their families. The story is especially good for siblings of children with cancer, since it shows how they sometimes feel that they are being ignored, and their sister or brother is getting all of the attention. It also teaches a child how to defend a classmate against bullying, when the girl with cancer is made fun of for having lost her hair. My only reservation would be not to use this book with a child who has extremely advanced cancer, since of course the story has a happy ending, and it might cause the child to wonder why they don't seem to be recovering. Overall: well done, Charles Schulz!

On the other hand,Jukes encourages readers throughout to talk to friends and caring, responsibleadults, and offers guy-appropriate lingo and tips to help facilitate toughsituations. On breaking up with a girl: "Breaking up on a Saturday afternoon atyour soon-to-be-ex's house (where support is available) would be better thanspringing it on a Monday morning at school." 1-0 out of 5 stars What a shame
There's a lot of good stuff in this book -- what a shame that it is so totally inappropriate for a teenage boy. For example, there's a bold-face section titled "Masturbating with Friends." Here we're told that "Some guys masturbate in groups; others wouldn't even consider it."

There's another section that starts with a factual explanation about what it means for a person to be straight, gay, lesbian, or bi. The facts are well presented, but then we get the editorial comment that "all are natural ways of being" and that homosexuality, in particular, "is a natural expression of human sexuality" and a "normal variation of human sexuality."

By contrast, the author does not like the "objectification" of women in a Playboy or Penthouse magazine. There she advises boys to stay away and asks: "Why have a bunch of potenitally weird sexual images floating around in your head?" Funny, that was my response to her section on group masturbation.

I had high hopes for this book, but I'm sending it back.

5-0 out of 5 stars A LIFESAVER FOR SINGLE MOMS
This book is a life saver for single moms. I have two boys and many of the questions they have asked are in this book. Until I read this book, I didn't understand that walking around with an erection most of the time was normal. The "Guy Book" has also taught me about the changes that have occurred and about the changes that are still to come. Thanks to the "Guy Book" I don't think I'll get caught off guard with some questions and changes my boys are yet to experience. I appreciate that the author thought about including girls and some of their changes. A must read for any single female parent and a great book for boys experiencing puberty.

4-0 out of 5 stars "thrilling read"

5-0 out of 5 stars A 5 star book for young children!
"Parts" by Tedd Arnold is a hilarious book for young children. My son received it as a gift from his kindergarten teacher. It was perfect timing as he was starting to loose his teeth. It's the story of a young boy, who upon loosing his teeth, among other things, thinks that he is falling apart! We just laughed and laughed over this book and read it again and again. I even buy it as a birthday present for all my nieces and nephews for their fifth birthday!

5-0 out of 5 stars Kids LOVE It!
I used to read this book to children for story time. The kids loved it! You could see the range of emotion in their faces as the story progressed, and the look of relief with the conclusion of the story.

This book makes it easy to explain to kids what's going on with their body, and reassures them that they are not falling apart.

The illustrations are outstanding, really attention getting, and tie in perfectly with the story. Without a doubt, the favorite part of youngsters I read this story to. They all wanted to fully examine every image.

This book is guaranteed loads of giggles from your aduience, as well as yourself. :)

4-0 out of 5 stars Laugh Out Loud Riot
My 3 yr. old daughter loves this book. It's very funny, although, at times, a little gross. A little boy thinks he's coming apart when he finds, hair, ear wax, belly button lint, etc. My child now tells me that her stuffing's coming out whenever she has belly button lint, so be prepared for the consequences of reading this hilarious book.

5-0 out of 5 stars Too funny!
This was one of the funniest kids books I have ever read. The story is fun and the pictures added to the fun. A must have for any child's library.

5-0 out of 5 stars Fantastic!!!
Since purchasing this original for my son, it has gone through three children, all of whom can't get enough of this book. Even my eldest whom does not enjoy reading, will gladly read this to his younger sister. I recommend this book for any age. The pics are simple and colorful. The language is relateable to all.
Great enjoyment! ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars hi

5-0 out of 5 stars Klutz Strikes Again!
I have to say, I'm a sucker for Klutz books. They give simple, easy to read instructions, and you get all of the supplies to do it with! How fun!
The Body Book is my favorite book of all, though. It has tons of recepies for your skin, hair, face, hands, nails, and feet. All the ingredients I have tried so far have made a signifant difference after I tried them! The book includes three essensial oil bottles, a shower cap, tools for your nails, a foot scrub, and a face brush. The pictures in the book are beautiful as well, which makes it all the more worthwile to read. Who would I suggest this book to? Girls 12 and up, teenage girls would especially love it, but I'm sure many women would too! It makes a great gift!

4-0 out of 5 stars GREAT for preteens, girls with sensitive skin, and scientists
****My mom bought this for 10-year-old Amanda, who has eczema, and has to be careful what she puts on her skin.
~ - ~ - ~
For other pre teens who need to be careful of skin, - this is great! You know what the ingredients are, as you make the concoctions yourself. Now all can join the herbal and scented shampoo/body potion craze.
****
Directions are easy to follow, but be prepared for a little searching for a couple ingredients (we initially had trouble finding sea salt which was used in one of the best recipes)

Great recipes included milk bath for dry skin, and salt skin scrubs (seriously-feels great!) for mild exfoliating and skin softening.

Pre-teens and teens can follow recipe instructions fairly easily, but may need help shopping for a couple of the more hard to find ingredients. (Natural beauty supply stores and the Internet helped)

****Lots of good, *clean*, healthy fun, attractive to young teen girls

5-0 out of 5 stars Fabulous book for ALL kids
Many children's ABC books are so crowded with images that it is easy for kids to miss the main point, i.e., A=Apple. This is a very clear book with great photographs! Most young kids enjoy photos of other children, and this would be a great way to introduce all children to diversity...and disability as a type of diversity to be embraced and not feared.

5-0 out of 5 stars GRANDMOTHER OF (D FOR BOY) IN THE BOOK
I believe this book is a large step in the right direction for educating the world on Down syndrome, and realizing just how beautiful these children are. My grandson is the first Down's child to ever go through our regular school system and is doing great. You will notice in the book that there are twin combinations, where one twin has Down syndrome and the other doesn't, and there are regular children with the Down's children. All these children are from New York State but various parts of the state, there are a variety of ethnic groups. This book tells a whole other story then just a child learning their ABCs. There is another whole lesson here to be learned. You don't have to have a child with Down's syndrome for your child to get something from this book. Our moto is: They are a child first and Down's second. Another words a CHILD with Down's syndrome, not a DOWN syndrome child. I am very pleased with the positive responses this book is receiving. God bless each and everyone of you who purchased this book. My grandson also thanks you.

5-0 out of 5 stars Wonderful Book Featuring Children with Down Syndrome
This is a wonderful ABC book. Each letter has a full page photograph showing a child with Down syndrome in an activity with an object corresponding to a letter of the alphabet. The letter "D" for example, has a young boy with Down syndrome and a dog. The pictures are very colorful and clear. The children are beautiful models. This is a fun book and I highly recommend it. If only they made a hard board edition for little children... ... Read more

A great help for those new to diabetes.
Maes everyhing easy to understand.

5-0 out of 5 stars Not Just for Kids
I am an R.N. in an acute care hospital and this is the best book I have found for newly diagnosed diabetics. It's simple, but not childish. It gives all the pertinent information for a diabetic to get off to a good start without overloading them with a lot of medical jargon and technical information. It's officially recommended for pre-teens, but I find it beneficial for even adults. When they are ready to learn more, then they can move up to a more advanced book. ... Read more
