Review on Stuck in Neutral
I really liked this book because it had alot of emotion and true thought. A boy named Shawn Mcdaniel has cerebal palsey and a dad that's trying to kill him. And if that's not enough, he can remember everything he ever heard, and saw. It could be an extrodinary gift, but noone will ever know because he can't talk, or communicate with anyone. He's a vegetable. I like this book because his father loves him, very much. Shawn goes through seizures every day, and when his dad see's him having them he feels that he's suffering. But really Shawn looks forward to them. His dad feels that he should put him out of his misery, by killing him. It's a story of bad new's and good news. The only part I don't like about this book is that at the end it has kind of a cliff hanger ending. Out of nowhere the book just ends. I wish I could know what his father was going to do to him, or if he did anything at all. This is a very good book because, it keeps you interested,and you never know what is going to happen. I would recommend it to anyone who likes fast reading with emotion in the thought.

An Interesting Read
Stuck In Neutral is a book about a boy, Shawn, who can't control his muscles, so he can't talk, walk, write, ect. The book is written in first person, so you can see everything in Shawn's point of view. Throughout the book, Shawn explains his frustrations about not being able to show his family and everyone else what he is really like, what he feels when he has his seizures, and about his thoughts on what he thinks his father was going to do.

The book, is based on some truth, but in several parts it is quite fictitious. Stuck In Neutral is a good book to read to get the feeling of what it's like to live with someone with that kind of disability, but might not be accurate in showing what it's like to have that sort of disability because you would only know if you actually have it, which the author doesn't. I have to admit, I didn't particularly enjoy the book because on many parts I found it a little hard to believe. However, the book did broaden my outlook on disabled people and their abilities. The book wasn't the best, but I still recommend that some people read it because it makes you think more about what disabled people really go through.

Stuck in Neutral
This is a book that you won't want to put down, even after you have read the last sentence. As a reader, you feel honored to get inside the head of Shawn, a 15-year old boy with Cerebral Palsy. You are able to see how the world seems or feels to someone like him. I laughed and cried while I read this book. You might not, but you will definitely think. Be prepared because the book deals with serious issues, such as euthanasia.

good piece of work
My only complaint is the book was extremely short. I hoped maybe the plot could have been a bit more developed, but unfortunatly- the writer felt it wise to leave the rest to the reader. I guess thats a virtue, but I was left wondering and wishing that I could delve deeper into Shawn's life and truth.

The story's plot was unique, and the end left me biting my nails and begging for more. If you want a good read, this is definatly your book!

This is an excellent teaching tool that paves the way towards acceptance of persons who display autistic behavior. Autism and its related neurobiological condition, Asperger's are spectrum conditions. Common spectrum behaviors include a myriad of sensory issues such as strong aversions for loud noises; strong reactions to certain smells and tastes and distinctive speaking styles. Great book to motivate toddlers into toilet training!
I feel this book is an excellent tool to aid in the toilet training process. I bought character underpants and a neat potty, but it wasn't until my daughter read about someone else getting their panties, did she take an interest in going to the potty. The princess' experiences resembled her own - i.e. preferred going in her diaper, didn't want to have anything to do with the potty, and her OWN panties excited and motivated her. It helped her to have someone to "relate" to. We still have a ways to go, but I believe this book gave her a step up in the process.

No 'special potties' needed! Funny, gets them interested.
As I began reading this book about a little girl whose royal parents buy her every color and pattern potty imaginable to get her to potty train, I was a bit worried my child would begin demanding her own 'pink potty'. However, as you read you discover none of these bribes work with the little girl-she simply doesn't want to (sound familiar? It did for me). Anyway, only the thought of soiling the princess' pretty, new undies gives her the desire to run to the potty in the end. And it is then that she discovers she doesn't need any of those fancy potties, the closest potty will do(which is the plain, old potty)! Now, my daughter couldn't care less about pretty panties when we began to suggest potty training. ... This was her favorite book and it is so cute she actually continued choosing it in her nightly read selections for some time after potty training. ... Anyway, would reccomend this Princess and the Potty to keep the task at hand foremost in their little minds and then one other for more specific step-by-step instructional which can tend to be not as attractive for them to want to read. Good luck! If you stick to it and let them feel the few messes and help clean up, you'll succeed!

Excellent
Our little girl was really reluctant to use the toilet. I found this book really helpful because it showed a little girl having issues using the toilet. At the end there is a lovely picture of a happy little girl sitting on the toilet - very useful.

"Less Than Fairy Tale Reactions"
While this story happens "once upon a time," it sure sounds like some contemporary families I know. Princess is a royal - um, challenge who refuses to use her potty. King and Queen worry more about what the neighbors will think and about pleasing the princess than finding an effective solution. Even in my own home, we were overindulgent when training our firstborn on her own little throne (Stickers? Silly songs and dances? Nothing but a royal hassle!).

Since then we have read almost every potty book available on the market (over two dozen!). Most fit into two categories: INSTRUCTIONAL books that introduce the skills needed to master the potty; and those that are primarily ENTERTAINING, for children who understand what is supposed to happen on the potty, but need extra time to make it happen.

This text is more detailed than most, the vocabulary more difficult (with words like chambermaids and pantalettes, for example). But I found Wendy Cheyette Lewison's fairy tale ENTERTAINING. Unfortunately my little ones found it a little too lengthy and lost interest before I reached the end. Too bad. The Princess and the Potty is a delightful read from the once upon a time to the happily ever after.

Fun and Helpful For Toddlers and Parents
What a great "potty-learning" story! I was a little sceptical when I first saw the title - I thought it sounded silly. But after reading more descriptions and reviews I changed my mind. Boy am I glad I did! My 22 month old daughter loves it and so do I.
The pictures are fantastic and the story is done very well. I like how tactfully it is told. It feels like you are reading just any other fairy tale about a princess but it is nicely wrapped around the potty :-) Great reminders for parents too.

My daughter really gets into this book. She really likes the part where the princess says "This potty doesn't please me, take it away!" And always grins and nods her head sharply. (Maybe it's just the way I read it, but it's cute anyway.)

She loves to sit on the potty with this book and has me read it to her several times a day (esp. at bedtime) and also "reads" it to herself during the day. Unfortunately, though, it is soft cover with paper pages (most of her books are board books) she is pretty good with it but it still gets slightly damaged. I have to be careful to put it away when she is done with it so that it doesn't get trampled or lost under her toys and therefore crumpled.

Definitely a keeper, get it for you and your princess. Great to have in the library. (We also have "The Potty Book for Girls" and "My Potty Book for Girls") ... Read more

Accurate, Honest and Made For Real Human Beings
Working within a private practice, I constantly find young people and parents who are looking for understandable answers to their questions about sex, responsibility and growing up in a healthy way. I have personally read over a dozen books on this topic, but this is the one we have in our waiting room and that we recommend to our youth and parents.

This book provides accurate, honest, understandable and realistic information to those who need it most. Our teens love it, and parents find it to be a Godsend. If there is one book each family should have it's this one.

The best book for teens I've ever read!
Working as a health and sexuality educator in Miami, as well as being a mother of three, this book delivers the information teens really want to know in a way that is understandable and interesting to them. Another big plus is that this book has the most illustrations of any other book on the subject, which holds my students and teens attention as well. I always recommend this book to the staff personnel, teachers, parents and students I meet at the health facilities and schools I visit. This truly is an invaluable handbook!

Every Parent Needs This!
I recently read an article about how many parents simply are unaware of what kind of information teens needs when it comes to sex and this book was recommended. I purchased it and read it in 3 nights! And the article was right, now that I read all of this I am much more confident about speaking to my 14-year-old daughter about these issues. There was actually so much I didn't know, especially about what teens are going through these days. The other nice thing is that not only do my daughter and I talk about these issues now, but I gave the book to her to read. She comes to me for my opinions on what she reads and just simply loves all of the information because it is written in such an easy to read style. Excellent resource!

This has it all
Glad someone out there finally understands what is going on with young people and is giving us the information we want! Some of my friends like the abstinence section, some us need the contraception section, but what I like best is that not only is this about sex, but it let me know that I am not alone in a #$%@@ home life and that I can make it, and how. Adults don't realize what we go through and everyone thinks EVERY young person is treated right - well their wrong. I'm glad I got this information and I'm glad I'm not alone. "Reading this true story may save your life"
"It Happened to Nancy" is a true story, told in diary form by an anonymous 14-year-old girl ("Nancy" is her alias) that is infected with the AIDS virus when she's raped by her 18-year-old boyfriend, Collin Eagle, a freshman at a South Carolina university, who's basically an up-and-coming pedophile.

The"romantic" aspect of Nancy's relationship with Collin is almost unbearable to read because of her naiveté. Plus the reader already knows what's going to happen, so it's hard to feel the same excitement she does over this "Southern gentleman."

There were a few things that bothered me about this book, though the first one can't be changed--like why didn't Nancy's mother take her to a doctor a.s.a.p. in the event of a pregnancy? Topics like this one--along with loads of other useful information in regards to rape, HIV/AIDS, etc.--are included in the remaining 20 pages or so of this book. That alone makes "It Happened to Nancy" worth buying, though the story itself is very touching too.

Yet the biggest thing that bothered me about this book was how much of it was censored by Sparks (who also edited "Go Ask Alice")--or possibly by Nancy's parents--perhaps to "protect" younger readers from some of the mature content. Either way, it makes the story uneven and confusing at times.

Although the reader can guess how the book will end, that's not the real purpose of it. Instead, it's to "educate and enlighten adults and perhaps safeguard some young people" from this happening to them. This book is definitely worth having in every school library.

A wonderful, touching book about an unfortunate event.
It Happened To Nancy is one of thoes books that makes you cry, laugh, and yell at them when they do something wrong. After reading this I realized part of the reason that my parents don't want me to date until I am 16. The day I finished it, I suggusted it to all of my friends. I hope that this will help people be aware of what is going on around them. It helps others know all the pain and suffering that some of those innocent victoms have to go through. It also shows that they can lead a normal life. I loved reading this book, and I couldn't put it down. I read it everywhere; in the car, in bed, at my grandparents house, and even when I was waiting for my mom to finish shoping. I recomed that you read it for yourself to see what a wonderful book it is.

Moving book in spite of possibly being fradulent
I read this book twice in a row at fourteen and cried at the end both times, after having earlier scoffed at the book because of how stupid and naïve Nancy acted. It's really upsetting to find it may be largely or entirely a fraud, that this sweet courageous young person may have been made up or had her life made into something that was largely the creation of Dr. Sparks. A lot of girls are like Nancy and don't see anything fishy about an older man wanting to date them or letting an older boyfriend spend the night when their parents are away. During the stampede (or whatever the chaos was) at the Garth Brooks concert she attends with her friends, Nancy has an asthma attack and finds herself being taken care of by a strange older boy named Collin. She never tells him to get away from her because she doesn't know him, or tell him he's too old for her at her age. (Four years of age difference in a relationship isn't that big of a deal, but if you're 14 and 18, it's not the same as, say, an 18 year old and a 22 year old.) She never even tells her mother about this relationship, or any of her friends. It turns out his real name is Gary and that he's 32 years old.

In hindsight some of it does seem too fishy to be true. How was Nancy's doctor able to give her an HIV test without her knowledge or permission, why does her disease get so serious so fast (unless Collin had a full-blown case when he gave it to her, or because of her strained immune system due to her serious asthma), why doesn't she go down to the Catholic rape crisis centre she called the morning after her attack, after telling the sympathetic nun on the phone she'd come over, why doesn't her mother take her to get tested for AIDS, STDs, or pregnancy as soon as she tells her about the rape? She takes her out of town on a beach vacation instead? And it's suspicious how all of Sparks's young diarists have the same exact moral preachiness, similar writing styles, never say anything against their parents (or if they do they quickly take it back), never get involved in these problems by their own accord but instead are pulled in by friends who drug them, rape them, or talk them into Satanic beliefs. Nancy may be a sweet religious old-fashioned Southern girl, but surely she couldn't have been that naïve. I was a few years younger than Nancy at the time these events are going on in the early Nineties, and well remember what the climate was like at that time, people deathly afraid of getting AIDS from toilet seats or mosquito bites, people desperate for more funding for research because so many people were dying and getting sick. None of that was felt in her small South Carolina town?

It's a moving book with a powerful and important message, but I no longer view it the same way I did when I first read it and thought it was a 100% true story.

a must read
This book was amazing!!! It soooo sad it was a true story because it happen to such a bright girl. Nancy, I found she was easy to relate to understood her, well reading the book you grow to love Nancy & respect her. Nobody should have to go through that... I learn so much from this book I learn facts thanks to Nancy that can save my life just from reading this book because I know what to do in the suction. Just like know I know if your ever rape to not wash up or change clothes afterwards go straight the police because it a evidence. My instinct before would have to change & take a shower. But Nancy writing is so descriptive she could have been a very famous writer I think, sooo sad this is the only book she wrote. This book should be read by all teenagers especially!! This book should be our teacher in school make sure we read. I think parents should read this book with the children & talk about this true story & what really happens if you don't be careful. Naive Nancy
This diary edited by Beatrice Sparks was a tad unnerving. Whereas I better understood Alice's naivete in the drug world due to it being the late 60s/early 70s, Nancy's naivete in the modern dating world was a little more difficult for me to grasp.

Still, that doesn't make Nancy's situation any less heartbreaking. At fourteen, she falls in love with an 18 year-old named Colin. God knows I wasn't nearly as naive at 14 - and I'm not now, either. But for a girl looking for love in all the wrong places, she'll take it where she can find it. Besides, Colin's facade is believable and he is incredibly good looking, gentle, and seemingly loves her, despite a very short period of time spent together. However, things turn deadly when he date rapes her and leaves her with the HIV virus. It's basically impossible for police to track him down - Colin was not his real name, as Nancy soon finds out after her ordeal.

Now infected, Nancy must incessantly worry if she will accidentally infect peers and the ones she loves. She asks many questions in her diary that she herself does not answer, which is okay. Editor and doctor Beatrice Sparks answers all of her questions and more in a section of the end of the diary titled, Questions Nancy Wanted Answered About Rape and AIDS.

Nancy's downward spiral from a happy high schooler to a girl on the brink of death did little to shock me. Naturally, since her immune system grows weaker and weaker, that can be expected. But the support of friends and family, plus a normal boyfriend her own age, ease the pain and knowing that it will be her time to go sooner than originally thought. Despite the typical flaws found in many journals, this one still ought to be read by any girl aged 13 and up. Maybe, just maybe, it will change their perspectives about certain issues. It worries me that some of my friends date much older guys.

Take this conversation with one of my friends: "I think it's so gross how girls our age will go out with older guys. When I was in the eighth grade, my friends bragged about going out with 20 year-olds." "Well, I had something going on with a 26 year-old," my friend replied, sounding ashamed. I didn't judge her - I was embarassed my comment would make her think I thought badly of her. In reality, nothing like that would change how I felt about our friendship - it made me worry, that's all. I was concerned about another friend who lied to me about a guy she'd slept with. It happened when she was 14, she said, and he was 20 - actually, 23. "I thought you'd freak," she'd said. 20 or 23, I "freaked" both ways.

A good place to start
As a Christian Parent raised in a family that never discussed sex, I found this book (and the series) to be a great starting point. It hits all the right topics in a way that communicates a Christian view without using guilt or sounding preachy. Parents should read it themselves, then pass it on to their child. Don't wait for your child to hit puberty before you start talking about this important subject.

The Goodenoughs Get in Sync by Carol Stock Kranowitz was a great book to read because it so helpful in the classroom.Many times we think that a child is just being mean or annoying when in reality it is a sensory disorder and the child can not help it.I felt the definitions provided to certain words such as sensory under-responsivity, auditory defensiveness and visual defensiveness, to name a few, were extremely enlightning. My son has a friend who has a sensory disorder.I didn't know about the disorder until he came over to spend the night.When it came time to go up the stairs to my son's bedroom he began to freak out.Of course, I called his mom and she explained everything to me and I began to understand.This is a wonderful book to recommend to her.I also enjoyed reading about each family member and how the sensory disorders varied so much.However, each had their own issues to deal with, they really stuck together as a family and supported one another.Even the dog had sensory issues.I would really recommend this book to teachers so that they have better sense of some of the behaviors that go on in the classroom.

It is NOT AMAZING to me that Carol Kranowitz has done it again! I know how LIFE CHANGING her book: The Out-of-Sync Child was for me and for my son! That book made LIGHT BULBS go off in my head and I was able to read it inserting my son's name on every page after I had read page number two! Her resources brought HOPE and took away so much self-doubt, guilt, fear, sadness, frustration, etc...!All of her books are something I could put my hands around, my head into and helped open my heart!Her books CHANGED my life and changed "WHO" my son is FOREVER! Doctors, parent, teacher, grandparents,etc...need to read this book as well and share it with the children they are trying to understand/help! Perhaps they will see themselves on these pages?

Greatest resource for SI kids!
Carol Kranowitz has done it again!I cried when I read her book "The Out of Sync Child" 6 years ago after my son's therapist diagnosed him with Sensory Integration Dysfunction at age 3; his behavior all finally made sense.I wasn't just a neurotic mom!Over the years, we've been very open with both our boys about their "hidden disabilities".This book now helps them understand on their level what is happening with their neurological systems.And, it helps them share their differences with kids (and adults) who aren't neurologically challenged.I particularly appreciate the fact that each of the Goodenoughs struggles with his/her own sensory issues so you get the bigger picture of how sensory processing disorders affect people daily in all activities.

Heads Above the Rest
Everything you need to know about potty training (oops! I mean potty LEARNING as per Dr. Sears) is contained in this 32-page picture book. The first three pages have helpful notes to parents and caregivers. The story itself includes sidebars, or blocks of supplemental material, designed to answer the persistent questions (Why? Why? Why?) of curious children. The last page provides details about attachment parenting, a responsive style of raising children, and a list of various Internet, textbook, and organizational resources. The special bonus? A pull-out poster with seven simple steps to hang in the bathroom.

Renowned pediatrician Dr. William Sears and his R.N. wife Martha team up with writer Christie Watts Kelly to produce a book that stands heads above the rest. Impressive credentials, comprehensive content...but does it pass the read-aloud test?

I didn't discover this book until late in the game. My girls had already graduated to big-girl underwear and pull-ups. But I read it to them anyway. The cartoon illustrations rendered by Renee Andriani captured their attention - for awhile. Then they lost interest. Too wordy? Or just too late? My third child is due next year. When the time comes, I'll try this book again to teach the fundamentals. When s/he understands what to do, but needs extra time to do it, we'll read potty books I find more entertaining.

Really good!
My son (2 1/2) loves this book. I found that it really helps with explaining the process and motivating him to use the potty. The poster is nice too.

Another great parenting book by Dr. Sears!
This book is excellent for parents who practice Attachment Parenting. It starts by explaining that when the child was a baby, their parents did everything for them. This shows a mother breastfeeding, parents and baby co-sleeping, and a father "wearing" the baby in a sling. It then talks about diapers and how as children get older, they use the potty like their parents. There are lots of parent tips that appear in the margins, encouraging further discussion and customizing things to suit your family's needs and preferences. As always, Dr. Sears encourages you to follow your instincts.

The story itself isn't much different from the one you'd find in The Potty Book or other training books. It follows a child through potty training, buying underwear, etc. The narrative uses language a child can understand, but sometimes it seemed a bit too babyish for me. ("poo-poo goes bye-bye"). I don't think you have to talk down to kids to get them to understand. But, that small complaint aside, the book is informative and positive. It's a wonderful teaching tool, and perfectly suited for Attachment families.

best potty learning book out there
We have purchased many books in this genre :-) and are delighted with this book by childcare experts William and Martha Sears. The book starts with a three-page introduction for parents, discussing readiness and approach. The text for children is comforting and informative -- letting kids know that there was a time that parents did everything for them but now they are growing up, and using the toilet is another aspect of their growth, like dressing or feeding themselves. Cartoon pictures show a little boy using a potty seat and his older siblings using the adult toilet seat. An older boy urinates standing up, and handwashing is shown. Sidebars on most pages address questions that children might ask with suggested answers. The process is emphatically positive though constipation and accidents are also mentioned. The book concludes with a page about attachment parenting.

The only thing I didn't like was the use of the terms "pee-pee" and "poo-poo" but that's easy enough to change as you read. The message is comforting at the same time the text is informative for kids, discussing the mechanics of the process as well as the benefits.

There is also a pull-out poster that shows the steps involved, and this can be placed on the bathroom wall or maybe in a spot your youngster tends to seek out when s/he feels the need to go potty.

Building Good Nutritional Habits
What a wonderful resource for parents who are trying to "do the right thing" -- to teach their children healthy eating habits in the midst of a society that promotes the fast, processed, and packaged. Dr. Sears categorizes food into green light/yellow light/red light groups, and it's a concept my children (ages 2, 4) readily understand. The text is simple and clear, and the message is presented in a fun way. This book would be a big help to any parents interested in changing their families' eating habits for the better. A Darling Book
Hatha Yoga is generally form based. Elephants need to know the "proper" position for their trunks while they perform asanas. The author shows where the trunks should be positioned for maximum effect.

Humans can also follow the book's pictures, sans the trunk positions, and perform a nice hatha class.

what a smashing success
I very much enjoyed the adventures of Babar when I was younger. This book has just tickled my fancy and I am ordering one for my yoga teacher and partner. It is well done, entertaining, extremely accurate (how do elephants get into those poses when I can't?) and a great treasure for someone into the practice of yoga. This will be on my list of Eastern-themed gift books to give this Holiday season, along with my other favorite gift book Open Your Mind, Open Your Life by Taro Gold.

Pachyderms Practicing Peaceful Poses
I bought this book after seeing some of its illustrations - a little elephant in red shorts turning a backward sommersault - in a magazine. Written in an endearing, matter-of-fact tone by Babar the elephant, the book begins with Babar's explanation of how it came to be known that elephants are actually capable of doing yoga. In the next several pages, Babar provides the reader with instructions of very basic yoga poses, and he himself illustrates how to do the movements. The illustrations of Babar folding and stretching himself into yoga poses are hysterical and adorable. Babar then takes the poses on the road, while travelling internationally. He uses the yoga to relax and meditate in front of inspiring world famous monuments. This book is fun for children as well as adults. Great interactive book...but easily destroyed by 2 yr. old!
My daughter loved this book! The movable parts even made her demand her potty so that she could try the same movements as the book's character! In the first hour, though, she tore one of the tabs. Still, a fun and engaging book!

It's Silly! It's Fun! It's A Great Book!
This was our first potty book - a gift from Grandma. If you've spent any potty training time you know you've got to have patience while you wait...and wait...and wait. This book helped to pass the time. My daughter loved to lift the flaps and pull the tabs. Eventually she began to "read" it for herself. After two kids this book has seen better days (and lots of scotch tape). But hopefully it will make it through our third child!

We have read almost every potty book available on the market as of 9/2003 (over two dozen!). Most fit into two categories: INSTRUCTIONAL books that introduce the skills needed to master the potty; and those that are primarily ENTERTAINING, for children who understand what is supposed to happen on the potty, but need extra time to make it happen.

I think What Do You Do With A Potty fits more in the INSTRUCTIONAL category for the following reasons:

1) It identifies the purpose of the potty.
2) It specifies bodily functions ("poopy" and "tinkle" in this case)
3) Shows the transition from diapers to big kid underwear.
4) Includes the important steps such wiping, flushing, and hand washing.

For other activity books on this same subject, try Let's Go Potty by Moira Butterfield or Sara's Potty by Harriet Ziefert.

So what can you do with this book? Enjoy it again and again!

Great for both sexes
My twins (boy and girl) love this book. The toddler pictured is pleasantly androgenous, which may bother some people, but not us. I think it's not good behavior for a boy to urinate standing up unless there's a urinal (too many "aiming" mistakes, even with grown men!), so having the character be sitting down is important. Charming and informational.

humorous and fun introduction to using the potty seat
This 10-page pull-tab book is a funny introduction to using the potty seat. Cartoons of a little boy ask 'What do you do with a potty?' and 'What goes in the potty?' Pull-tabs show the boy pulling down his pants and sitting on the little seat, pulling out the toilet paper and emptying the pot into the big toilet.

The mood is upbeat and fun, the format is engaging for children. Terms used are 'poopy' and 'tinkle'. Handwashing is not mentioned.

This is a happy little book that should be used in conjunction with other, more informative books, such as Sears' "You Can Go To the Potty".

An awesome book
This is wonderful book before I got this book my daughter may have spent a total of ten minutes actually sitting on the potty. Since, I purchased this book she has since gone potty twice in the last week and won't leave the restroom until we have read it about five times or more.
